Metal smelting is seeing a continual increase in intensity and throughput in recent years. This is done with increasing demand for cost/capital efficiency, higher recovery, and managed environmental impact, among other things. With the development of more intense smelting processes, the issues of refractory wear, mixing and separation of reacting phases and the nature of the reactions between them become more prominent. Understanding of interfacial phenomena is in growing need, in addition to knowledge of the bulk properties of equilibrium and transportation. The GKW CRC has a suite of projects aimed at developing various techniques and expertise to provide information of interfaces in metallurgical systems. This article illustrates some recent development in this area, particularly in studies of melt/refractory contacts, the determination of surface and interfacial tension of metal/slag/matte melts, modelling slag-metal mixing and studies of kinetics of the smelting reactions.

ALTHOUGH furnaces constructed of refractory brick have been oper-ated for many decades, there has always been an unfulfilled desire by the operators for a less arduous and more satisfactory method of patching weak spots and burned-out zones in order to postpone and to effectively extend the termination of a furnace campaign. Not only has this desire frequently arisen when small spots have approached incipient failure while the furnace structure as a whole was still in good condition, but also when larger areas showed signs of needing replacement. The availa-ble methods have been arduous, sometimes dangerous, inefficient with respect to the life of new refractory material used, and nearly always have necessitated interruption of the continuity of the furnace operations and therefore reduction in furnace production during the period of time required for the repair work. Most of these older methods have involved the replacement of masonry by refractory shapes in the weakened areas. Many attempts have been made to develop a method of patching the burned-out areas by spraying granular refractory material upon old surfaces. While some success has been attained in attempts to renew the grooved, corroded side walls and fettling, and the edges of hearths, there have been no known successful applications of the spraying method in patching the underside of arches of operating furnaces. The method developed recently at the Clarkdale smelter of the United Verde Branch of Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Clarkdale, Ariz., and described in this paper, has been found to be not only convenient and successful with respect to patching vertical or inclined surfaces, but has met with a marked degree of success in patching the parts of furnace arches that are exposed to flame, the successful result being obtained with-out interruption or interference with the continuity of furnace operations. ? In this study, it was aimed to produce glass sand with less than 0.15% Fe2O3 for window glass manufacture and glass ware grade with less than 0.05% Fe2O3 from Yalõköy sand dunes having 0.48% Fe2O3. In order to reduce the iron content of the Yalõköy sand dune, magnetic separation, flotation, scrubbing, H2SO4 leaching and drying were used. The optimum iron removal was achieved by H2SO4 baking at 150oC and 8 kg/t acid consumption. In this way, sand concentrate was obtained with 0.04% Fe2O3 and sand recovery 95%.

Analysis of mining equipment fires from 1990 through 1999 reveals that there were 340 large mining equipment fires, resulting in 72 injuries and five fatalities. Many of the fires resulted in the loss of equipment and all posed potential or real risks to the operator. In 97 cases, the fires raged out of control due to engine shut­off failure, even upon activation of the machine fire suppression system, due to the spraying of pressurized hydraulic flu­id and fuel onto hot engine surfaces. In other cases, even after engine shutoff, the fires re-ignited, fueled by the contin­ued flow of flammable fluids remaining in the lines onto the hot engine surfaces. In many of the fires, flammable vapors evolved and penetrated the cab, violently igniting, forcing the operator to exit under very hazardous conditions. The use of emergency evacuation lines in the fuel and hydraulic fluid systems, and methods to reduce or prevent the spraying of pressurized fluids onto hot engine surfaces would greatly improve the chances of successfully suppressing large mining equipment fires. In addition, the use of systems for preventing the ignition of flammable vapors inside the cab, and detecting and suppressing fires originat­ing in the cab, would greatly enhance operator safety. The National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted experiments on meth­ods to reduce the fire hazards associated with large mining equipment. These experiments evaluated the use of cab inerting systems to prevent the ignition of flammable vapors inside the cab and sup­press fires originating in the cab, while maintaining a breathable atmosphere for the operator to bring the equipment to a stop and safely exit the cab.

A processing of technogenous wastes, which involve a gold-containing sulphide minerals, is a potential source to supplement the gold reserves. Hence, searching of ecologically safe and economically reasonable methods for processing of gold-containing technogenous wastes is a topical problem. To increase a parameters of gold extraction and to simplify a technology of the processing of above-mentioned wastes of sulphide minerals, an investigations have been carried out in the direction of the use of the method of electrochemical leaching without any preliminary processing of the mineral. It was established experimentally that an introduction of nitrogen containing organic additive into chloride solution favours to reduce a Red/Ox potential of the solution from 0,8÷1,2 V to 0,35÷0,5V, which permits to conduct the process of direct electrochemical leaching at ?soft? oxidation regimes at temperatures 20-300C C without an environmental contamination by molecular chlorine and with a high degree of a gold extraction up to 80-90%.

This report on the mining and milling of tungsten ores is the second part of a general study of the domestic tungsten industry. The first part, comprising general information on tungsten, has been printed as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6821. The purpose of these papers is to increase efficiency in the mining, preparation, and utilization of the tungsten resources of the United States. The tungsten industry forms so small a part of the vast mining and metallurgical operations of the illation that private metallurgists have not had enough inducement to give special attention to the recovery of tungsten minerals from the ores, and many of the small companies are financially unable to undertake research work. A study of the milling of tungsten ores reveals that further improvement is possible, especially in the treatment of slimes. Recent experimental work by the Bureau shows that the flotation process is applicable to certain tungsten ores. The future of the tungsten industry it the United States depends to a great extent on utilization of the low-grade deposits of the contact-metamorphic type.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90 per cent of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive. So, it is important to consider the seismic stability and reliability of all structures including tailings dams.In this study, the tailings dam stability of the Sangan Iron Ore Mine in Khorasan Razavi, Iran is considered for the case study. The tailings storage facilities of the mine have three cells with the capacity of 45 million cubic metres. The first cell, which has three stages of dam raising, has been recently brought into operation. This cell has a downstream-raised retaining embankment. As the risk of seismicity in this area is high, seismic response of this dam was evaluated by numerical methods. To do this, appropriate models were developed for materials used in foundation and body of the embankment. Then for seismic stability analysis, Tabas (Iran – 1978) and Chi-Chi (Taiwan – 1999) earthquake acceleration simulations were applied.The results of this study indicated that the upstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam and dam crest did not experience significant horizontal displacements during earthquake period, but the downstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam showed a maximum horizontal displacement of 60 cm at the third stage of dam raising. This is three times more than what was estimated by the designer. Also, the maximum vertical displacement resulting from simulation of the Tabas earthquake was 35 cm. The results of dam response to Tabas and Chi-Chi earthquakes indicate that displacement, shear stress and pore pressure by the Tabas earthquake were higher than the case of Chi-Chi earthquake. The higher energy of Tabas earthquake and the higher frequency near to the natural frequency of Tabas earthquake could be the reasons of this difference. The results of this case study confirm that if the studied tailings dam impacted by an earthquake of a similar magnitude to Tabas, the dam will be seismically stable and the developed strains will not be significant.CITATION:Delavar, A, Rashidi Nejad, F and Ganjian, N, 2015. Exploration at both Greenfields and Brownfields stages entails business risks of different nature and success rates. Greenfields exploration is exceedingly assumptive and the success rate of exploration or return on investment is low because exploration is an inherently risky business. Brownfields exploration on the other hand is less risky, as the geology is better understood, but generally speaking since the larger ore bodies close to surface have already been found the return is lower. In addition, most exploration at the Brownfields stage is generally more expensive due to extensive use of drilling. Surface geology mapping and expensive drilling have been key technical contributors to most exploration programs over the last two decades. However, as client expectations, logistics, target depths and complexity of exploration programs increase, there has been a growing emphasis on using geophysical techniques to complement other methods. Integration and optimization of various geoscientific disciplines is becoming more important in successful exploration programs of the future to reduce exploration risks, successful integrated exploration requires putting reliable geophysical parameters and correspondent petrophysical property contrasts into an assumed or conceptual geological model. This paper discusses a new multi-parameter geophysical methodology finalized in a unique conceptual geologic model which can be used either as a root model in grassroots exploration or as an efficient tool in Brownfields exploration to successfully find satellite orebodies of almost any size. The application of a new multi-parametric geophysical approach to Brownfields exploration is illustrated with examples from Manitoba, including a past producing nickel sulphide deposit in Lynn Lake and the Reed Copper deposit, currently in development.

The theory presented ill this paper makes possible examination of the phenomenological aspect of secondary oil recovery by alcohol flooding. Limitutions of the theory are contingent on three primary assumptions: (1) chemical equilibrium, (2) no fingering, and (5) no dispersion. The second assumption implies one-dimensional flow. In a geometric sense the theory extends the Buckley-Leverett construction to systems of two slightly miscible fluids and to systems of three components. This is made possible by considering single-phase fluids to be made up two phases, namely of an excess of one phase and a negative amount of the other phase. The procedure is discussed in the paper. The theory also permits direct determination of the relationship between the aqueous phase saturation and the concentration of water in the aqueous phase in a zone of variable composition. The velocity of planes of constant water concentration and of constant saturation can be computted likewise and the existence of saturation discontinuities inferred. Consequently the behavior of such a Zone, which may exist at some time between a displaced and a displacing fluid, May be determined. mathematical details are given in Appendices. Problems of experimental verification are pointed out on the basis of a supporting experiment. Implications of the theory and effects of violations of primary assumptions are discussed briefly. The major conclusion is that, if the primary assumptions are met, with pure alcohol and alcohol-rich .slugs piston-like displacement of oil and water is possible. INTRODUCTION The recovery of oil from porous media by alcohol displacement has been studied for several years. Extensive experimental investigations into alcohol flooding have been carried out in the laboratory although little has been done in the field. A large amount of practical information is available, the extent being indicated by the first three papers cited 1-3 and their respecrive bibliographies. This has permitted the Formulation of inferential theories. A more analytical approach in which theories are developed primarily by reasoning from known physical principles and relationships has, however, lagged behind. In fact, an analytically derived theory of alcohol displacement has not been available. The theory presented in this paper on oil and water displacement by alcohol from a porous medium is a result of the analytical approach. The theory is idealized, as certain assumptions had to be made to make the mathematics tractable and reduce complexity of argument. In particular, major assuptions concerning conditions of equilibrium, interfacial stability, longitudinal mixing, etc., led to the exclusion of fingering, for example, from all considerations. In many laboratory experiments reported in the literature fingering could not be avoided. There is, therefore, disagreement between theories based on experimental evidence available and the analytically derived theory presented here. This theory presented is based on known physical data and makes use of the Buckley-Leverett construction and its suggested extension. The mathematical derivation of the theory is given in Appendices. Three examples relevant to alcohol displacement are discussed to explain the use of this theory: (1) system of two immiscible fluids (the Buckley-Leverett case); (2) system of two slightly miscible fluids involving an extension of the Buckley-Leverett construction; and (3) system of three components, including injection of pure alcohol or alcohol-rich fluid as a special case, which involves a more general extension of the Buckley-Leverett construction. In these discussions strict assumptions were made to impose equilibrium conditions and exclude mixing and fingering. Effects of relaxing these assumptions and consequent extensions of the theory are indicated. The complexity of the alcohol displacement process makes experimental verification of the theory essential. Some relevant evidence is offered in this paper.

THE south border of Espirito Santo begins about 400 km. north of Rio de Janeiro and extends along the Atlantic Coast northward some 325 km. and inland 100 to 150 km. The area under consideration, where quartz crystal of strategic grades has been mined, extends from 19° to 21° and 30" south latitude; and from 40° to 41° and 30" west longitude. This includes the central part of Espirito Santo, chiefly south of the Rio Doce from the Atlantic ocean, and west across the border into Minas Gerais near the town of Aimores, in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais; Baixo Guandu, Santa Teresa, Santa Leopoldina, Colatina, Joao Neiva, Fundao and Domingo Martines, Espirito Santo (Fig. 1). During 1943 and the first half of 1944, this region accounted for approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the quartz crystal produced in Brazil. Shipments of crystal have been made chiefly by rail to Rio de Janeiro. This region is serviced by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Leopoldina to Rio de Janeiro through Vitoria; and by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Central do Brasil through Bello Horizonte, Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. The major deposits are accessible from the railheads by dirt roads, some being 5 to 30 km. off the road, reached by trail. In 1943 and the first half of 1944, the bulk of the production was from inter mountain marshes and adjoining hillside alluvial placer deposits in the zone surrounding the town of Santa Teresa. Most of these deposits were formed from the erosion of pegmatites, quartz veins and pockets in the gneiss, with minor quantities produced from miarolitic cavity fillings in the granitic rock. EARLY OPERATIONS Mining of quartz crystal in this region began in 1928, and has been stimulated by the market demand for military uses. Before 1936 little attention was given to it, either in Espirito Santo or eastern Minas Gerais. From 1936 to 1941 the Japanese sent agents to various points of production or potential production to acquire quartz through purchase. They bought crystal as small as 10 grams. Since 1941 only the United States and Great Britain have received quartz from Brazil. The United States purchases crystals of loo grams and larger for strategic purposes. The first known discoveries were made either in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais, or in Baixo Guandu, or Domingos Martines, Espirito Santo. Marketable quartz crystal was first found either in the massive quartz replacement veins of the Victor Hugo mine in the municipality of Domingo Martines, or in the large cores of quartz in the pegmatites near Baixo Guandu, extending into Minas Gerais. Evaporation and crystallization processes are used extensively in the mining industry to provide many pro-ducts. In the case of solution mining evaporators are used to concentrate, or to concentrate and crystallize the raw materials being mined. In the case of underground, or strip mining dissolving and crystallization are used in many processes in order to purify the ore to saleable materials. Presently evaporators and crystallizers are being used in the production of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, lithium chemicals, aluminum, and many others. The evaporator is a device designed to remove water or solvent from a solution. In an evaporator the energy released by steam condensing on one side of the heat transfer surface is transferred to the product solution on the other side of the heat transfer surface. As long as the boiling temperature of the product liquor is below the condensing temperature of the steam, the product solution will absorb heat. This heat absorption causes vaporization of the water (solvent) in the product solution resulting in concentration of the product. The simplest evaporator is the single effect evaporator. If we assume the feed introduced into the single effect evaporator is at its boiling point, ignore radiation losses, and assume the steam into the heat exchanger is dry and saturated, then the heat transferred will correspond to the latent heat of vaporization. Therefore, one kilogram of condensing steam will produce one kilogram of evaporation. Economies in energy usage compared to the single effect evaporator can be made by using multiple effect evaporators, or vapor recompression evaporators.

One of the deepest coal operations today is the Springhill No. 2 mine of Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., subsidiary of Dominion Coal Co. Ltd. Mining is now conducted at a slope distance of 14,000 ft, with 4400 vertical ft of cover. The record of Springhill No. 2 can be said to contain the history of bumps in the Province of Nova Scotia. The Springhill coal field forms part of the Cumberland field of Carboniferous age. There are seven mineable fields in the area, numbered in the order they were discovered. Mining has been carried on in all but the No. 4 and 5 seams, but present operations are confined to the No. 2. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through the seams. Opened in 1873, No. 2 mine was first worked from parallel slopes driven from the outcrop of No. 2 seam down to the 7700 level. As the mine went deeper, a two-place auxiliary slope was driven from the 6900 level to the present workings. A transfer level at the 7800 connects the main haulage with the auxiliary haulage slope. The No. 2 mine plan is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The seam is bituminous, averaging 8.5 to 9 ft thick. There is a well defined parting 14 to 16 in. from the roof, and this roof coal is harder than the rest of the seam. Average pitch at the outcrop is 30°; at the 6500 level, 20°; at the 7900 level, 16°; and at the 13,800 level, 10°. Immediate roof and floor strata consist of beds of variable thicknesses of shales, grading to arenaceous shales to shaly sandstones to sandstones. A characteristic of the strata is the appearance and disappearance of sandstone bands, of considerable thickness, over distances of several hundred feet. MINE HISTORY Entrance to No. 2 mine is obtained by three parallel slopes, separated by 100-ft pillars except in the upper portion of the mine where the pillars are smaller. Main haulage levels were originally driven 600 ft apart for room and pillar extraction. A parallel drainage and intake airway was driven below each haulage level and a parallel return airway (counter level) above. Pillars 80 to 100 ft wide separated these two servicing entries from the center haulage level. Inclines up to 700 ft apart were driven off the levels up pitch to the upper levels, and at 40-ft centers level rooms 12 ft wide were driven off each side of the inclines, separated by crosscuts every 50 to 100 ft. The rooms were driven up to 350 ft or until they were holed into the room from the adjoining incline—a plan followed until the level reached its boundary. When the entire area between two levels had been divided into pillars, the pillars were extracted from the boundary back to the slope pillars. As depth of cover increased, mining conditions required larger pillars, and at the 3300 level, where NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS FOR MINING AT DEPTH In Room and Pillar Extraction: 1) Pillars must not be too small. 2) Pillar size must be uniform. 3) Extraction lines must be kept as straight and as uniform as possible. If they are irregular they should be brought back into line slowly. 4) Peninsulas of coal surrounded by gob must be avoided. 5) Pillars should not be disturbed after they have been formed. If it is necessary to increase the width of an opening, stripping or ribbing should be done gradually over a long distance. If increased width of openings is necessary at certain locations and can be anticipated, the openings should be widened during development. 6) Under no conditions should small pillars be left in the gob that would interfere with caving. In Long wall Operations: 1) Pillars formed during development for retreating longwalls should be uniform in size and shape. 2) Pillars should not be split after development, but if pillar splitting does become necessary it should not be carried out within the zone influenced by the working faces. 3) Width of levels should not be increased after the levels have been developed. If it does become necessary to widen a level it must be done gradually over a long distance by stripping or ribbing the coal ribs. 4) Extraction lines should remain uniform. If several walls are worked together—one behind the other—a uniform distance must be maintained between them and the wall faces must be kept as straight as possible. If the walls do get out of line, they must be brought back into line gradually to allow for a gradual change in the stress distribution over the area. 5) Stumps of coal, roof supports, etc. must not be allowed to remain in the gob to interfere with caving. 6) Midwalls should be built as rigidly as possible and properly maintained.

Introduction The purpose of coal preparation is to improve the quality of coal to make it suitable for a specific purpose by (1) cleaning to remove inorganic impurities; (2) sizing-crushing or screening, or both; and (3) special treatment, such as dedusting. The properties and quantities of impurities in coal are of major importance in the design and operation of steam generating equipment. Although boilers are often designed and equipped to use a wide range of coals, no boiler will perform equally well with all types of coals. All coals have certain properties that place limitations on their most advantageous use. These limitations are especially stringent for many of the older installations. Because of a general lowering of quality of raw coal in recent years, the need for coal cleaning has significantly increased. Among the factors contributing to the need for increased coal preparation are (1) increased demand for quality brought on by market and environmental requirements; (2) increased extraneous dilution caused by mine, health, and safety laws; and (3) depletion of the higher-quality coal seams. The major characteristics of coal and impurities from the standpoint of mechanical cleaning are particle size composition, generally called size consist; density differences; the relative friability of the coal and its associated impurities; hardness; and strength. Some of the other factors related to preparation are petrographic composition and rank. RANK CLASSIFICATION Coal is a general designation for a great number of solid organic minerals with different compositions and properties; all are rather rich in carbon and have a dark color, generally black. Next to mineral oil and kerogen, coal is the most important reservoir of carbon in the world. Carbon is an indispensable necessity of life as well as the main source of energy. Coals are found in stratified deposits, sometimes at great depths. All coals owe their origins to slow decomposition and chemical conversion of immense masses of organic material. As found in seams, coal is a heterogeneous mixture of organic and inorganic materials. Not only are there large differences in the properties of coal originating from different seams, but also in coal removed from different locations in a single seam. A genetic relationship exists between peats, brown coals, lignites, biturninous coals, and anthracites. As a whole, the process of coal formation, or coalification, proceeds as a continuous transformation of plant material, each phase characterized by a degree of coalification, or rank. As a measure of this rank, the carbon content or some related parameter can be used.

Column leach studies of two low grade prophyry copper ores were made with variables of size, flow rate, pH, drainage rate and tempature. Evidence is presented to show that, in some types of ores, sulfide minerals block leaching channels and regulate the rate of dissolution of gangue constituents. Basic iron sulfates, dissolved by introducing acid, provide oxidizing agent in the form of ferric ion in the absence of oxygen. Ferric ion then acts to release copper from the ore. Oxygen up-take was found to increase with the lowering of the pH and to follow parabolic kinetics attributable to the precipitation of basic iron salts within the pore channels. Slow drainage of residual gravitational water can seriously retard oxygen up-take during oxidation for particles in the coarse sand range. A model is presented for dump leaching in which a reaction zone connected by channels to the surface of the ore particle moves topo-chemically during the course of the reaction.

This Is not a highly technical paper, but rather an attempt to give a general outline of coal mining for the benefit of those present who may have little or no experience in the industry, and is intended to give some general knowledge which may help to a better understanding of the problems of the industry. A knowledge of the disposition of workable material is necessary to give a comparison with other mining practices. Coal Is usually found in comparatively fiat seams of varying thickness, whereas other minerals are generally found in highly inclined lodes of variable width. However, even in comparatively flat seams unaffected by faulting, grades can, and do, vary greatly over short distances.This variation causes many local problems in working the small area affected. Even very steep seams, and some are much steeper than 1 in 1, vary considerably not only in grade, but also in direction of grade and level course. This is probably caused by folding during alteration of the shape and form of the basins after deposition.These swellies are common to most coal seams and vary only in extent. This type of variation in grade and direction of grade, while common to most ore bodies, is a matter of great importance in coal mining when it is considered that roadways are driven in the seam itself and have to be graded and made suitable for haulage purposes.The area of ground involved in an individual coal mining operation is often very large; many times larger than most metal mining propositions, and often comprises many thousands of acres.When it is considered that the specific gravity of coal may be only one-fifth of that of some ores mined, and the coal seam may be five or six feet in thickness, the vastness of the area necessary for continuous mining operations over many years will be realised.To achieve comparable outputs, with about five times the bulk of material to handle, much more ground and working places must...

The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, “Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate, ” July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing “super’ ‘-concentrates prepared from magnetite or “blue dust” into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloye to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free ) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential

Bergbau AG Niederrhein, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG; Essen, Germany, is working coal mines on both sides of the Rhine River. The Prosper Mine in the City of Bottrop has a production of about 13,000 tons per day and has been in operation since the turn of the century. Mining has moved to the north as coal deposits south of Bottrop are exhausted. To facilitate ventilation, material handling, and transportation new shafts are being constructed in the northern coal fields. The Prosper 10 shaft is being sunk to develop the Prosper - Haniel coal field which has reserves of 280 million tons. In October, 1976 Bergbau AG Niederrhein awarded the shaft sinking contract for the 1047 m deep, 8 m inside diameter Prosper 10 shaft to Gewerkschaft Walter; Essen, Germany. Construction costs will amount to about 40 million DM with construction completion scheduled for 1981. GEOLOGY The shaft, located near the town of Kirchhellen north Bottrop, is being sunk in the Grafenwalder Horst between two faults on the south west flank of the Kirchheller Anticline. 270 m of upper cretaceus sands and marls overlay sandstone bedrock at the shaft location. The upper 124 m of this section contain highly saturated sands interspersed with marl. In order to successfully sink the shaft through this section, ground stabilization by freezing was used.

Large amounts of dunile tailings can be recycled for olivine produdion from the existing beneficiation adivity of chromite ore in northern Greece. This olivine production aims at the preparation of a material suitable for the substitution of the environmental hazardous quartz sand in the foundries of Europe In smelting of chromite ore the losses that occur ore usually of the order of 6-8% Cr that report in the slag. Most of this is in the form of oxides that cannot be recovered, but usually 30-35% is in the form of FeCr alloy that can be recovered by gravity methods. About 90% of the produced slag is sold for road construdion after crushing to a desired grain size. Finally, recycling of chromites sludges from the ferrochrome produdion plant, through the preparation of pellets, improved the total chromite yield by 2%.

"This paper reviews the history of Wabana Mines from 1892 to 1966, inclusive, in order to clarify the essential factors involved in the achievement of maximum mining efficiency and in the search for an acceptable product to satisfy changing market requirements. It outlines the progressive steps taken to mechanize both surface and underground operations, and forecasts anticipated performance, assuming certain major plans could have been implemented. Results of extensive research in the treatment of the complex ore are discussed. Selected processing alternatives are compared as to feasibility in a summary incorporating estimated capital and operating costs."
