This Bureau of Mines report is a study of the organizational framework of the ferrous scrap industry, of the products produced, and of the factors affecting the consumption of ferrous scrap by the steel industry. Consumption data from 27 major iron and steel firms in the States of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin during the period between 1957 to 1962 were grouped by type of iron and steel furnace production facilities to determine consumption pattern for various grades of scrap in comparison to ingot production, hot metal consumption, and home scrap generation. Grades of scrap affected by changes in scrap consumption were determined, and the pattern that emerged was analyzed. Correlation of scrap demand and its effects on scrap prices based on price of scrap receipts of No. 1 heavy melting scrap and No. 2 bundles in the Chicago area for the years 1957 through 1962 indicated that demand trends do not always affect the price of scrap, Past and present technological advancements in steelmaking processes are discussed, and their effects on the scrap industry are analyzed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the dust control effectiveness of two-phase flow systems in a full-scale model mine using a mockup of a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine. In a two-phase flow system, air and water flow simultaneously through the nozzle. Air pressure varies from 10 to 60 psi, and water at 30 to 50 psi. Coal dust was introduced at the face, and dust concentrations were monitored at the operator locations and in the return. When compared with a conventional spray system, a symmetrical two-phase flow system reduced dust levels during the box cut by 43 pct at the operator location, and 30 pct in the face return. Dust levels, however, increased at the off-operator position during the slab cut. A directional two-phase flow system reduced dust levels at both operator locations by more than 90 pct in the box cut mode. While the use of two-phase flow systems will reduce respirable dust levels and water usage, it requires an air supply to the miner. Moreover, the ability of the two-phase flow system to redirect the dust cloud makes nozzle orientation a critical factor.

Extracellular bacterial protein (EBP) from Paenibacillus polymyxa was isolated. Adsorption of bacterial cells of Paenibacillus polymyxa as well as EBP onto pyrite, galena and sphalerite was studied. Both bacterial cells and EBP was found to have different adsorption density for different minerals. Protein from mineral surfaces were extrated and examined through SDS PAGE electrophoresis. Specific group of protein was found to be adsorbing, specific to respective minerals. EBP was fractionated through FPLC. Adsorption studies were carried out with each fractions. Difference in adsorption density was observed for individual minerals. Flocculation and flotation experiment were carried out with these mineral specific EBP. Pyrite was selectively removed from ternary mixture of galena and spharite through flocculation anf flotation using pyrite specific EBP. Mineral specific EBP was found to selectively separated remove pyrite from the complex sulphide mixture.Zetapotential studies were carried out to examine the surface chemical changes of the minerals on interaction with EBP. Hydrophobicity of the minerals were carried out on interaction with bacterial cells as well as mineral specific EBP.

An industrial engineering and computer simulation study was conducted on reclamation operations to evaluate the possibility of integrating mining and reclamation operations, and to evaluate the factors which influence the production potential of scrapers. The study was done in a southern Illinois strip coal mine producing approximately 2.27 M metric tons (2.5 million short tons) of clean coal annually. The main outcomes of this study are (a) it is possible to reduce reclamation cost about 20-25 percent by integrating reclamation and mining operations, (b) haul distance has the most significant effect on scraper production, (c) push-pull is the best mode of operation for wheel scrapers for topsoil/subsoil removal, and (d) historical data obtained from the mine for one year show that average dozer productivity in rock grading is about 60 percent lower than the expected production; similar data for scraper is about 25 percent less.

"This paper, an overview of our recent findings on mechanical activation (MA) of minerals/materials, emphasizes the importance of sample genesis, mechanically induced/altered porosity and surface area, mineral interactions, glassy inorganic materials, surface alteration and zeta potential changes and, mechanically induced reactivity of solids. Materials investigated include Al-oxyhydroxides (gibbsite and boehmite), fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag. Planetary, attrition, vibratory and conventional ball mills are used for MA. Genesis of boehmite has been found to have a bearing on its behavior during MA. For example, BET specific surface area (SSA) of boehmite prepared by thermal dehydroxylation of gibbsite has decreased from 265 to 65 m2/g during 240 min of MA; in contrast, the SSA of hydrothermal boehmite has increased from ~2 to 36 m2/g. Mechanisms of surface area changes in the two boehmite samples differing in their genesis is explored. MA of gibbsite and its mixture with hematite/quartz using attrition milling has indicated that the presence of the second phase promotes amorphisation. Amorphous materials show signs of change in nature of bonding during milling as illustrated by MA of fly ash. Physicochemical changes during MA are not restricted to the bulk phase. The genesis of zeta potential changes in MA solids can be many; for example texture induced zeta potential changes as observed for gibbsite, while zeta potential changes during the milling of granulated blast furnace slag occur due to enhanced (possibly non-congruent) dissolution. Interesting manifestations of mechanically induced reactivity and its correlation with physicochemical changes are illustrated in terms of alkali leaching of boehmite and, hydration of MA slag. New findings reported here are associated with several open questions and are highlighted in the paper."

As Technical Director of the Naples, Italy based Fondedile, a geotechnical construction firm specializing in static restoration of structures, Fernando Lizzi, Ing., devoted over 30 years to the pursuit and advancement of static restoration and subsoil strengthening. Seismic events, construction of new structures on polluted and/or unstable soils in urban areas, and a need to carefully preserve and restore delicate, war-damaged historical structures, manifested the need for underpinning projects. Traditional construction methods and approaches, such as underpinning with additional foundation masonry, were not suitable and would have further jeopardized the stability of the structures. The introduction of the palo radice (root pile) revolutionized the field of underpinning. At the time of the first application of micropiles, the industry standard was driven piles. The drilled micropile was conceived and first implemented in the early 1950s, as an innovative means to underpin sensitive, historic structures and structures in urban areas. Specifically, the new construction technique was conceived as a less expensive alternative, designed to accept structural loads, be installed in limited access areas, in varied working and sub-surface conditions, which did not involve changing soil characteristics, and had minimal disturbance to the structure being underpinned, or to adjacent structures.

Because of the high number of accidental methane gas ignitions in metal and nonmetal mines, the Bureau of Mines searched for a simple guideline that would allow mine personnel to evaluate the methane hazard in a given mine. Air samples were collected by the Bureau in 53 metal and nonmetal mines and analyzed for trace evidence of methane gas. Samples were collected in the returns and at the working faces. Those mines classified as gassy by the Mine Safety and Health Administration had a significantly higher average methane concentration than those classified as nongassy. Of the 9 gassy mines sampled, 7 had methane concentrations above 100 ppm, whereas only 1 of the 44 nongassy mines had a concentration above 100 ppm. The 100-ppm concentration may be used as a simple and convenient guideline for forecasting the methane hazard in a mine, whether or not the mine is classified as gassy. There was no consistent correlation between commodity mined and methane concentration, nor was there a correlation between mine depth and methane concentration. Neither of these factors can be considered a guideline for predicting methane hazards.

A sample of crude copper powder produced by the CLEAR Process was refined by dissolution and recovery in sulfate media using the Parker Process. The Parker Process offers an alternative method of copper recovery to electrorefining and allows a range of Eh and pH conditions to be used to provide further discrimination of impurities. High purity copper powder was recovered by the Parker Process even in the presence of added impurities when the Eh and pH was maintained near constant throughout the refining step.

Although the economically important uranium minerals are difficult to recognize under the ore microscope, they can be identified by a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Useful quantitative techniques include indentation hardness, percent reflectance, spectral reflectance curves, and color coordinates. The latter two properties are especially distinctive for the primary urahlferous minerals uraninite, coffinite, brannerlte, and davidite. Together with the quantitative properties of indentation hardness and reflectance, the character and color of internal reflections are distinctive for many of the secondary uranium minerals. Ore microscopic techniques also provide an excellent means for determining the intergrowths of these minerals with other ore and gangue minerals. Such intergrowths are important to an understanding of the genesis of uranium deposits, and they may be important to uranium extractions.

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

In many of the bituminous-coal districts of this country, more than one seam of workable coal exists, and in most cases the lower seam is the more attractive, owing to either its greater thickness or its superior quality. Apprehension that the mining of a seam will destroy the availability of all overlying seams has hindered the development of many fields and has led to the unprofitable working of certain seams in order to save them from an expected total loss. The U. S. Coal & Coke Co., Gary, W. Va., was the first operator in the Pocahontas field to mine the No. 4 seam extensively, which occurs about 80 ft. above No. 3, the scam that was worked first. This was due to the fact that over large areas the upper seam was the only one of workable thickness, at that time. In two places, both seams were workable in the same area, the No. 4 being thinner and containing more impurities than No. 3 seam. In mining these areas, an attempt was made to keep the workings in the upper seam in advance of those in the lower one, and no pillar robbing was done in No. 3 seam until after pillars in that part of the upper seam directly over it had been mined. This resulted in an excessive development in the lower seam, with large areas of finished rooms and standing pillars. The top fell badly, and after a couple of years the falls became so heavy that pillar drawing was unduly expensive. To overcome this obstacle and allow No. 3 seam to be worked in some territory where No. 4 was thick, but too dirty for present use, a study was made of operating methods applied to superimposed seams in Pennsylvania and Maryland. This was started more than seven yean ago by the writer; his data, supplemented by more recent information gathered by his associates, and by two cases mentioned in recent foreign publications, form the basis of this paper. This contribution addresses the advanced blasting technology which is based on wave propagation theory and fracture mechanics. The new concept of sonicity and the principle of maximizing sonicity in blasting as well as the energy or work of a blast operation will be introduced. It is shown that - in contrast to common belief – it is not the velocity of detonation which controls the blast but the relationship between velocity of detonation and the wave speeds, in other words, the Mach numbers of the blast operation. Based on numerous practical blasts in Germany, the authors show that, when using wave dynamic concepts, there is a linear relationship between peak particle velocity and the work of a blast operation and this linear relationship is controlled by the sonicity of the blast. Extensions to layered and faulted rock masses are presented. It will become clear that a second change of paradigm is enforced, the first one being the implementation of short time delaying. Again, the acquisition of knowledge in wave progation theory and fracture mechanics becomes mandatory in advanced blasting technology, where the art of blasting is now fully transformed into a science of blasting with little room for methods of trial and error.

Surface geological observations are predominantly two-dimensional but can be expanded into three dimensions using geophysical techniques. These techniques have proved succ- essful in the past and will be utilised more frequently in future mineral exploration. Geophysical training establishments must recog- nize future requirements and teach geophysics as part of a broad earth science course as well as a specialised geophysical course. Central- isation of teaching skills, the use of high- technology in the classroom, and greater interaction between academic and industry staff are recommended as a means of ensuring a vibrant geophysical training base in Australia, for the geophysicist of the future.

"Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in modern mining management. However, the concept is not culturally neutral because it is based on Christian, Western values. These values can be very different from traditional values in emerging mining countries like Thailand, where Buddhist values are dominant. When applying the concept of sustainable development, these differences should be taken into account. Different values imply different interpretations of ‘good mining’. They have a significant impact on how mining operations are evaluated, perceived, operated and managed. This paper attempts to integrate Buddhist principles with approaches of the sustainable development concept. When local values are appreciated and maintained, mining companies and their external stakeholders can identify objectives and approaches that match with their own values and contexts. Practices based on this integrated ethic can help to promote sustainable mining and to minimize communication risks for enterprises in mining countries like Thailand. INTRODUCTION The objective of this paper is to integrate Buddhist principles to the application of sustainable development concept to mining activities. The structure of this paper is divided into four parts. An introduction provides basic information about Thailand, its mining industry and the role of Buddhism on the past development. The second part compares the differences between the sustainable mining framework and the implications of Buddhist principles on mining. In the third part, the core Buddhist teachings are integrated into the sustainable mining framework. This is followed by conclusions in the last part. THAILAND, BUDDHISM, AND MINING Thailand is a constitutional monarchy state in Southeastern Asia with a population size of around 65 million [1]. Its GDP in 2013 was 391 billion USD [2], predominantly deriving from manufacturing (38%), trade, transport and communication (24%), agriculture (8%) and mining and construction (4%). Still the largest part of the Thai workforce (39%) is working in the agricultural sector. The remaining part of the workforce is equally distributed across services, manufacturing, and mining and construction sectors. [3]"

The massive and martensitic transformations in ß Cu-Ga alloys were studied by optical microscopy and by transmission electron microscopy and diffraction. These types of transformation are distinct and do not merge into one another. An internal fine structure due to stacking faults was found in both the massive phase (m) and the martensite, but the origin of the faults is believed to be different in each case. The faults in the martensite are due to the lattice invariant or "second" shear of the phenom-enological theory, while those in the are probably growth faults and deformation faults arising from the transformation volume change. Evidence is presented for ordering in the ß phase prior to transformation into martensite, and the crystal structures of and ß' and ßi martensites are discussed. THE results from some previous investigations1,2 have led to the suggestion that martensitic and massive transformations have certain common characteristics. It presently seems established that massive transformations like martensitic transformations are essentially diffusionless,1,2 but unlike martensitic transformations, when a new phase forms massively there is no shape change or surface relief.= If the massive-type transformation is crystallographically similar to martensitic transformations, one would expect a fine structure as a result of the lattice invariant shear4 which is a part of the transformation mechanism. The existence of such a fine structure (i.e., slip, twinning, or faulting), if any, can be verified by transmission electron microscopy, and thus the present investigation was undertaken to compare the internal structure of massively and martensitically formed phases in Cu-Ga alloys which were derived from a parent of the same composition. The transformation characteristics of ß Cu-Ga alloys were also studied. The bcc ß phase in the Cu-Ga system, Fig. 1, is stable above 616oc.' Depending upon the cooling rate, ß Cu-Ga alloys can undergo three different types of phase transformations. The ß phase of eutectoid composition (23.7 at. pct Ga) decomposes into the ? phase (hcp) and the phase (complex cubic) by means of a eutectoid reaction. When the cooling rate is increased so that the decomposition of 0 into [ and ? is suppressed, the ß phase transforms into a nonequilibrium hcp phase, herein denoted ?m by a process of very rapid growth called a "massive" transformation. At even faster quenching rates the massive transformation can be suppressed and the ß transforms martensitically. Massive transformations, apparently similar to those in the Cu-Ga system, have also been studied in the Cu-Zn2,6-8 and Ag-Cd systems.9 Definitive characteristics if the Massive Transformations in 0 Cu-Ga Alloys1 1) The most remarkable feature of the massive transformation in Cu-Ga is that there is no bulk composition change on transformation. The new mineral royalty regime for South Africa was signed into law in November 2008, with its main objective being to compensate the State for the depletion of public minerals through a royalty charge payable from 1 March 2010. The aims of this paper are to establish the potential impact of mining royalties on State revenues, industry affordability, and explore whether the dual formula system is likely to encourage miners to become refiners. It also measures the royalty dispensation against economists? tax standards in an attempt to make a judgement on the ?equity? of the new system. This paper argues that most stakeholders should be comfortable with most of the requirements of the Act for most of the time. However, the new regime is unlikely to motivate miners to become refiners, as the benefit of the reduced rate on refined minerals appears to be insufficient to justify the additional costs to refine the mineral resource to the prescribed states of beneficiation.

I earnestly hope that the investigation which Dr. Dudley has so ably carried on will be continued. I hope the Pennsylvarlia Sailroad Company, or preferably a combination of several railroads, will institute the prolonged investigation which I think will be necessary to solve this deep problem; that they will take a hundred or more rails, watching and noting down carefully every detail of their manufacture as well as their analysis; that they will be carefully weighed before, during, and after service; that their crop-ends will be tested before service, and the rails themselves after removal; that all the sources of error which Dr. Dudley admits in the present investigation may be removed, and that enough facts may be gathered and tabulated so that the conclusions which may be drawn from them may be apparent to every one without labored discussion or heated argument. But I venture to prophesy that after this investigation shall have been completed, and a formula adopted which shall be satiefactory to both manufacturers and consumcrs, that formula will not be the one now under discussion. I hope Dr. Durlley will pardon me if I have been unduly severe in my criticism, and consider that I have written my remarks hastily and at a time which should have been given to needed rest. I differ with him only as regards the conclusions which he has drawn. I appreciate the value of his labors, and only make public my own conclusions in the hope of contributing to the advancement of the science of steelmaking, in which we are ail so deeply interested. Dr. August WENDEL, Troy, K. Y.: Dr. Dudley's last paper gives, certainly, very valuable and interesting information regarding the wear of rails under different conditions. His results concernillg the composition of rails, explotle, rather startlingly, some old theories regarding the wear of rails, and 1 think after his formula is silnplified it will be one good formula to work by. On Wednesday 21 Dec 2005 at 3:28 PM the largest single bench blast in the company history was detonated. The successful firing of this 5.0 million tonne [5.5 million ton] blast surpassed the previous company record of 3.8 million tonnes [4.18 million ton].
