"In this present paper, the authors introduce the artificial neural networks into the modeling of the industrial flotation process, integrating information technology, control theory and intelligent optimizing method to flotation technology. The new idea gives a new way to solve the difficulty in this field, and therefore brings the study on the automatic control of flotation process in China into a new start.The Radial Basis Function (RBF) network, featuring a quick learning speed, is one of the feedforward neural networks. It has attracted much attention from automatic control recently for its implementing the nonlinearity mapping through adjusting the parameters of the nonlinearity transfer function. One of the online adaptive learning algorithm—the nearest neighbor-clustering algorithm, which can automatically determine the number of hidden units, has been implemented in the MATLAB programming language in this paper, laying the foundation for the flotation models.The relation model between ore pulp characteristics and reagents consumption has been proposed using the RBF networks based on the industrial lead rougher flotation of lead & zinc ore, and the simulation has been conducted in the laboratory with the results matching the samples data very well. The Xilin Lead & Zinc Mine Flotation Process Intelligent Consultation System of Reagents Consumption, which suitable for industrial process, has been developed. The reagents consumption advised by this system would stabilize the flotation process, and increase the recoveries. It could be used for providing the technological consultation to flotation operators in site, and for training new operators."

Optimisation of the underground mining production process benefits from informed decision making during the process of explosive rock fragmentation. Selection of the most appropriate bulk explosive products for underground production blasting is an area of endeavour that offers significant economic upside if correctly and thoroughly undertaken. The explosive selection process is facilitated by a clear understanding of:the physical and detonic properties of the alternative explosive options available; the response of different rock masses to these different explosive options; and the importance of maintaining a clear focus on desirable blast outcomes in order to enhance value creation aspects of the mining production process. The level of understanding of these issues is raised through the application of measurement and modelling technology, quantifying the effects of blast design (and implementation) on process outcomes. Homestake Darlot and DynoConsult applied a range of dynamic blast measurement and outcome modelling techniques in order to explore the relationship between rock properties, explosive properties and mining process efficiencies. A campaign of vibration and explosive Velocity of Detonation (VoD) measurement produced feed data for use in vibration and fragmentation modelling during the extraction of one of the major stoping blocks at Darlot Gold Mine. The paper describes the use of these tools and discusses the understanding gained concerning the limitations and capabilities of, and the reconciliation between, a selection of analysis and modelling approaches.

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research program being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the construction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipeline crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research program is discussed.

I feel a little like the Parson delivering his Sunday Sermon, chastizing his parishioners for not coming to Church. Those who need to hear me are absent.Nevertheless, I hope that if you agree with what I am about to say you will go forth and spread the word.We often hear of the impact mining has on the community. I prefer tonight to deal with the impact some community attitudes have on mining, and I want to point out that the results of these attitudes rebound to the detriment of our society. I want to deal particularly with regulation, taxation, and proflts.In a civilization whose standard of living is essentially dependent on an adequate and reliable supply of cheap metals and fuels, it should be evident to Blind Freddie that mining must be encouraged.I must express concern at the constraints inflicted on the mining industry by our community. We tend to blame Government for our difficulties, but we must recognize that Government acts merely as agent for the community. It is fair to say that in a free society, if Government actions do not reflect the demands of the electorate, then it doesn't stay the Government. It is important though for Government, in framing its policies, to ensure that it is not unduly influenced by the loud voices of minority groups.The people of our nation have every right to demand that our industry meet certain criteria to be allowed to operate. We all wish to live in a healthy and congenial environment, and to have our individual comforts protected. It is essential, however, that the community realizes that its demands on the mining industry are affecting Australia's prosperity.Each new regulation and each new tax or impost has its effect on investment, employment, and national revenue. Restraints result in an increase in costs which in turn raises the minimum value of a mineral deposit which is economically mineable. It results in minerals, which could be mined under more favourable circumstances, remaining in the ground, perhaps lost for ever.

IN the investigation of the effect of the time of heat on slag volume, no attempt was made to vary the usual practice at the Bonney-Floyd Co., such as selecting special-purchase scrap or cleaning foundry returns. The data were collected from seven normal heats, including four medium carbon, two medium manganese-molybdenum and one nickel-chrome-molybdenum. These heats were made with our normal practice and no special instructions were given the melters except to make sure that all slag-making materials were weighed and that no slag was lost during the melting, refining or tapping. After the stopper was set in the ladle, it was carefully weighed and the heat was tapped. As soon as the heat was slagged on the pouring floor, the nozzle was plugged with mud, to preclude the possibility of losing any slag while the ladle was being conveyed to the scales. The ladle, containing all of the slag, was weighed and the difference between this weight and the original weight was taken as the slag weight.

Knight Piésold?s annual roundtable discussion was held at the Red Lion Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV on March 14. This year the title was, ?Roundtable discussion on material co-disposal/ co-placement in the mining industry.? This topic was chosen because of the benefits that the mining industry could realize through the advancement of improved methods of storing tailings and mine waste and from reducing short-and long-term environmental hazards while reducing the footprint of these facilities and making strides toward attaining a walk-away solution. Knight Piésold had a local representative, Bryan Ulrich, as well as representatives from its Denver, CO office, including Tom Kerr, president of Knight Piésold?s U.S. practice, and Jeff Coffin, Ph.D., geotechnical engineer, to help facilitate the discussion. The event played host to about two dozen attendees from several western states. Attendees included personnel from more than 10 mining properties, various corporate offices and academia. The purpose of the roundtable was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to broad topics revolving around the subject of co-disposal/co-placement in the mining industry. Compared with traditional conferences and symposia, the roundtable forum tends to provide a less inhibited format for discussion. In the roundtable format, lively discussions and applicable tangential departures are encouraged. This was the seventh in the series of the Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to: ? Heap leach pad design, construction and operation. ? Design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities. ? Site-wide water considerations. ? Mine closure and cover design. ? Strides toward sustainability in mining. ? High-density tailings, paste and filtered tailings. Acid rock drainage for engineers and environmental scientists.

IT is well known that the hardness of metallic single crystals, like that of polycrystalline metals, increases during deformation (hardening by cold-work). It is also known that, as a consequence of deformation, the metallic material acquires an evident thermodynamic instability, revealed, for example, by the fact that the increased hardness gradually decreases with time, especially at elevated temperatures (softening by annealing). The temperature at which the stabilizing process begins is different for various metals, and for any metal it depends on the amount of deformation. Such stabilization of deformed metals may proceed in two different ways: through recovery, and through recrystallization. The former process allows the unstable deformed metal body to approach stability gradually and without visible change in the grain structure; the latter process, like an allotropic transformation, yields directly the undeformed stable "phase" in the form of new undeformed crystals, which, starting out of a certain number of nuclei, grow into and' consume' the deformed hard material. The extent of stability attainable through recovery is limited, espe-cially if the deformation of the metal crystal or crystals involves not only the gliding along slip planes, but also the bending of the slip lamellae, or at any rate the bending of comparatively large parts of the crystal lattice. In such cases, for instance in bent single crystals or poly-crystalline metals subjected to any deformation, recovery will not as a rule be able to restore the "straight" undeformed lattice, and stability can be attained only by recrystallization; that is, by the consumption of the bent crystal lattice parts by new, undeformed crystals-a much more drastic process. It is evident that the part of the surplus free energy stored in deformed crystals, which is present in the form of the elastic energy of the bent lamellae, is in these instances not considerably involved

"Therma1 and chemical treatment of respirable size silica dusts samples is shown to induce marked changes in their hemolytic activity. The cytotoxicity of crystalline a-quartz (Min-U-Sil), and fumed silica (Cab-0- Sil) particles, as measured by a hemolytic activity protocol, is decreased by calcination and can be related to the dehydroxylation of the surface. The hemolytic activity of P-cristobalite particles of respirable dust si7.e was also determined and found to be lower than that of a-quartz. The change in the surface structure resulting from thermal treatment is detectable by photo-acoustic infrared spectroscopy and zeta-potential measurements. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of both Cab-0-Sil and MinU- Sil disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp band, identified with single silanol groups, at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. The zeta potential-pH profile, in the pH range of 4.0-7 .0, of the calcined, siloxane surfaced particles is more negative than that of material with a silanol surface.The cytotoxicity of the crystalline and fumed silica dusts was also found to be strongly dependent on particle size. Fumed silica of large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. INTRODOCTIONThe toxicity of silica and other mineral particles, as manifested by their role in inducing pneumoconiosis, fibrosis, silicosis and other pulmonary disorders is largely traceable to the characteristics of particle surfaces and to particle morphology. The great wealth of data on the physical and chemical properties of silica is still insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of the specific parameters to be associated with fibrogenic activity and, correspondingly, with the optimum means for characterizing and quantifying the toxicity of dusts, and the design of possible preventive or therapeutic methods.The great diversity of parameters that have been proposed and tested for correlation with cytotoxicity suggest that more than one mechanism may be involved in the fibrotic activity of silica particles. The crystalline structure of the material (more active tridymite versus less active crisobalite and passive stishovite), freshly formed surfaces and free radicals associated therewith, silicic acid adsorbed onto silica surfaces, the concentration of hydroxyl groups at silica surfaces, particle size and morphology, among other properties, have been investigated and found to conelate in tests of cytotoxicity."

From the earliest use of crushed and broken stone as landfill for eroded gullies in trails and roads, to the mixing of sand and gravel with cement to make concrete, men and women have found mineral aggregates to be useful materials in satisfying human wants. Crushed stone, sand and gravel, volcanic cinders, pumice, manufactured lightweight aggregates, slag, cinders, expanded perlite and vermiculite, and a great array of recycled materials such as grog (broken or crushed brick) and fly ash have served as mineral aggregates. These materials have provided bulk and strength in portland cement concrete, bituminous concrete, road base, fill, concrete block, and plaster and stucco finishes. Mineral aggregates provide many special characteristics such as compressive and tensile strength, surface textures, weight and density, thermal and acoustical insulation, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. While most materials used as mineral aggregates are consumed on the basis of their low unit values, the large volumes extracted in the United States each year make them one of the most valuable mineral resources in current production. In 1960, US production of construction aggregate was just over a billion tons per year (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). Two decades of accelerated interstate highway, residential, and commercial construction brought the total annual production of mineral aggregates to roughly 1.4 Gtpy by 1970 and just over 1.6 Gtpy by the late 1970s. General economic and related construction slowdowns in the early 1980s saw annual US production of aggregates fall to below 1.1 Gt in 1982, and then rise to just over 1.7 Gtpy in 1990, a new peak in mineral aggregate production and use. Per capita annual consumption of mineral aggregates was approximately 5.68 t/capita in 1960, 6.89 t/capita in 1970, rose to a high of 7.25 t/capita in 1979, and has since settled to just under 7 tpy for every man, woman, and child counted in the United States Census of 1990. The value of these materials came to approximately $9 billion in 1990. During the period 1960-1990, roughly half of all mineral aggregates were used in the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial structures, and the remainder was consumed in highways, bridges, and other transportation facilities such as railway roadbeds, airports, and water-related projects (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). During the period 1988-1992, public works (highways, waterway projects, road maintenance, etc.) represented closer to 60% of annual mineral aggregate demand with residential and non-residential construction approximately 40%. The growing market share of public works projects has been mostly due to the dramatic slowdown in residential, commercial, and industrial construction during the 1988-1992 period.

Manual charging of long upward drilled holes in mines is a heavy and risky job today. Mechanization of this work has been requested for some time by miners, their supervisors, industrial safety organizations and the trade unions, all of whom are interested in improving the working environment. This paper presents newly-developed charging systems intended primarily for charging in connection with sublevel caving and sloping. These systems have been field-tested during 1977 in the LKAB mines in northern Sweden. The results of these field tests and the results of laboratory work conducted to help eliminate the risks involved in charging explosives are also discussed. The equipment being tested (see fig. 1 and 2) consists of a charging vehicle with articulated steering, the PT-60, which has been equipped with a hose feed system mounted on the hydraulic extension boom. From a sheltered position, the operator brings the detonator and primer to the hole opening, after which the hose is pushed in mechanically to the end of the hole. Measuring equipment indicates when and if the end of the blasthole is reached. The operator then withdraws the hose mechanically as charging takes place.

Dense, adherent, and ductile coatings of chromium can be applied to Molybdenum by selectively freezing out the chromium solute from a supersaturated copper-or tin-rich liquid alloy. The successful exploitation of this technique depends on the control of variables common to any freezing process. Under the most favorable combimtion of supersaturation, nucleation, and mass-transfey, coatings as thick as 0.004 in. can be obtained. In exploratory experiments it was found that a coating of chromium may be applied to molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum body in a supercooled copper-chromium or tin-chromium melt and selectively freezing out the contained chromium onto the molybdenum body. Supercooling of the liquid metal plating bath can be achieved by cooling, or the maintenance of thermal or concentration gradients in the melt. The technique is similar to conventional dip-plating procedures where the sample is immersed in a molten bath of the pure plating medium, except that in these studies, the plating medium consisted of a dilute solution of chromium in liquid tin or copper. The success of this method requires that the base material to be plated be isomorphous with the coating and insoluble in the plating bath. In addition, the plating bath, while having an appreciable solubility for the coating component, must have negligible solid solubility in the solid plate. Such relationships exist in the molybdenum-chromium, chromium-tin, and chromium-copper systems. Liquid tin and copper are satisfactory as the plating solvent, because although chromium is appreciably soluble in both of these liquid metals, solid inter-solubility is almost negligible, and no compound formation occurs. The same relationships exist between molybdenum and copper or tin except that the solubility of molybdenum in liquid tin or copper is insignificant. It is this combination of solubility relationships, as well as the completely isomorphous nature of the molybdenum-chromium system, which allows the formation of a chromium coating on molybdenum by the selective freezing mechanism. Since the main deterrent to the widespread use of molybdenum for high-temperature structural applications is its poor oxidation resistance, the formation of a dense and ductile chromium coating on molybdenum may well be of commercial significance. In addition, the basic principle of coating formation by selective freezing should be applicable to other metallic or even nonmetallic systems. The precipitation of the solute from a liquid metallic solution, for the formation of a protective coating, has not been previously considered in the literature. Frequently, however, a similar phenomenon has been described in the corrosion of metallic heat exchangers by liquid metals1 wherein temperature gradients in the liquid metal heat-transfer medium result in the formation of layers or deposits of metallic residue2 in the cooler portions of the system. Impregnating techniques using liquid baths have been tried as a plating process. Semchyshen and Barr, for instance, have successfully diffused chromium into molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum specimen in a liquid tin-chromium or copper-chromium alloy. This simple holding technique fails to produce a layer of pure chromium and requires prolonged immersion to allow for the diffusion-activated enrichment of the molybdenum. During the course of this investigation, most of the phase relations published for the copper-chromium4 and molybdenum-chromium4 systems, were found reliable. It was necessary, however, to investigate the solubilities of chromium and molybdenum in liquid tin as well as the solubility of molybdenum in liquid copper. These determinations were made by a simpie weight loss technique on materials of the same purity as used in the plating studies. Few industries are more challenged by technical, political and market uncertainty than the mineral industry. Technical uncertainty in mining projects concerns the volume and quality of the resource, the processing and metallurgical parameters, the production efficiency, etc. Political uncertainty can take diverse forms and includes possibilities of change in the taxation system, risk of expropriation and risk of social instability or war. Market uncertainty depends on the market structure of the commodity; price and demand volatilities are the most common sources of market uncertainty. Intensive feasibility studies including these uncertainties and risks are required before investing up to billions of dollars in the development of a new mine. Current feasibility studies are often based on a single (or very few) mean geological scenario and simplified price profiles along the life of the project. Yet, strategic decisions, for example, the level of investment in exploration and metallurgical studies, adoption of a flexible, but more costly, mine design and risk-sharing strategies are made at an early stage. Over the last twenty years, Real Option theory has emerged as a unifying framework enabling strategic planning under uncertainty (technical, political and market). Geological and market variances (second order statistics) are pivotal for proper uncertainty quantification. The present study explores the possible benefits of combining modern geostatistical tools and financial techniques for project management. More precisely, the following questions are examined: Is geological uncertainty really an issue? Can we combine geological and price uncertainties in a unifying Real Option framework? A simple example aimed at illustrating the concepts involved is presented.

This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. A short cut is presented where the average grade above a primary grade cutoff and its associated byproduct grade(s) are estimated by screening the primary and byproduct grades. For the primary variable, choose samples whose grades are above a cutoff of interest. Compute variograms for the subset of the primary variable. Then using this variogram, krige the blocks of interest only using the samples whose grades are above the cutoff. The next step is to screen byproduct grades by choosing byproduct samples whose associated primary grades are above the cutoff of interest. Next compute variograms for this subset of byproduct samples. Then using this variogram, krige the blocks of interest using byproduct sample grades whose associated primary sample grades are above the cutoff of interest. The results are the average grade above a primary cutoff for both the primary and the associated byproduct variables. Using two simulated primary and reference data sets a case study resulted in the screening krigings performing better than the indicator kriging approach in the first case study. A second case study had mixed results with the primary indicator approach performing better than the primary screened approach. The byproduct screened approach performed better than the byproduct indicator approach.

"In the aluminum and steel processing industries there is a need for velocity sensors to measure the flow characteristics of liquid metal. This paper will present a sensor and an inverse heat transfer technique to determine the direction of velocity in flowing liquid aluminum. Experimental research work with the sensor involving liquid aluminum was conducted, using the Revolving Liquid Metal Tank at the University of Toronto, which rotates 50 kg of liquid aluminum with velocities up to 0.35 m/s. Experimental data for various magnitude of velocity demonstrate that the sensor records different thermal profiles under different fluid flow conditions. Using the transient temperature information and the inverse technique, the direction of velocity of the molten aluminum flow field can be inferred. INTRODUCTIONOur research at the University of Toronto has focused on developing invasive sensors to determine the velocity of high temperature liquid metals. High temperature in this setting is defined at VALUES (in excess of 660 °C. The discussion which will persist in this manuscript involves detecting the direction of flow in liquid aluminum using an inverse heat transfer technique. We first reported on the sensor which is used in this article in the following two publications (Sukhram and Argyropoulos, 2011a; Sukhram and Argyropoulos, 2011b). The motivation to perform this research is due to the lack of sensors available to characterize the conditions within a high temperature liquid metal reactor/vessel. A report conducted by The Minerals Metals and Materials Society (TMS Energy 2011) has suggested that the introduction of sensors into molten metal processing environments has the potential to increase process efficiency up to 15%. Such sensors will aid in the understanding of high temperature liquid metal processing operations with the goal to implement more efficient process design and practice."

The purpose of this paper is to present data obtained from an investigation conducted on the grindability of coal by the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard ball-mill method. This investigation has been conducted over a period of a year, during which time several hundred tests were run on a wide selection of different coals coming from Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. The data herewith presented tend to show that the tentative standard ball-mill method might give results that are misleading and that a volume measure might be more indicative of the true grindability of materials of varying specific gravity. A means whereby the time element might be reduced has been studied and other phases of this work such as preparation of samples, mechanical screening, reporting results and duplicating tests have been investigated. It is hoped that all criticism offered in this paper will be taken as constructive, with the purpose ill mind of perfecting the method now tentative to show the true conditions 2nd of making optional the manner in which certain parts of the test might be conducted to meet diversified laboratory conditions. Weight and Volume The results of grindability on extraneous material from the coal scam obtained with the present tentative standard ball mill method indicate easier grinding of these materials as compared to most coals. Varying amounts of these impurities in the coal therefore may cause a raising of the grindability index and may lead to the erroneous conclusion that coals containing large amounts of these foreign materials are easier to grind. For a true comparison of grindability, it would seem necessary to grind to the same particle weight. If material were sized in a commercial mill by means of an air current set at a velocity to remove 1.60 sp. gr. float coal ground to 80 per cent minus 200 mesh, any 1.60 sink particles would be left behind, and in order to remove this 1.60 sink material by the same current it would be necessary to grind finer and produce a

During 1940, the Bahrein Island field produced a total of 7,073,919 bbl. of crude oil- an average of 19,328 bbl. per day. This is a decline of 514,635 bbl. from the I939 production of 7,588,554 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 70 producing wells.
