The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. Directional hydraulic fracturing was invented by Polish experts and was first applied in coal mining to prevent hard roof rock bursts. Based on its successful application in coal mining, directional hydraulic fracturing has the potential to reorientate the hydraulic fracture trajectory. Recently, this technique has been introduced into cave mining for the purpose of lowering breakdown pressure. The hydraulic fracture is much easier to initiate with the assistance of an initial notch. No systematic theoretical or experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the influencing factors in the hydraulic fracture reorientation process. In this paper, the numerical modelling software Realistic Failure Process Analysis3D (RFPA3D) – Flow Version is used to study the influence of the in situ stress condition and rock mass heterogeneity on directional hydraulic fracturing in brittle heterogeneous rock masses. Firstly, the reliability of RFPA3D in simulating hydraulic fracturing is validated by comparing its results with experimental results and the simulation results from the extended finite element method. The hydraulic fracture trajectory is then observed in a three-dimensional stress environment. The results indicate that for the in situ stress condition, when the borehole lies in the ?2–?3 plane, only the difference between ?2 and ?3 has an important influence on hydraulic fracture reorientation. This old and well-known method of determining silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, and because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a detemination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained. For this determination 1,115 mg. of standard metal are weighed and transferred to a glass-stoppered bottle, the metal is dissolved in nitric acid, and 100 cc. of a standard solution of NaCl run in. The bottle is then vigorously shaken and a measured portion of a decimal salt solution added, and again shaken, if necessary. These operations are repeated until the silver is precipitated. Standard metal being 900 fine, 1,115 mg. should carry 1,003.5 mg. of silver, which is a convenient figure to work with.

After determining minable acreage, tons are calculated by multiplying minable acreage by average thickness and by a volume-tonnage conversion factor. Converting from tons in the ground to tons sold across the scale takes fines and internally used and wasted stone into consideration, resulting in minimum losses of about 10% for limestone and 15% for sand and gravel. A high degree of certainty about thickness, lateral continuity and geologic character defines proven reserves. Assuming continuity of these characteristics defines probable reserves. By using tpa estimations and annual tonnage requirements, the life of a deposit can be quantified. The decision can then be made regarding the necessity of securing more acreage. Some landowners choose to multiply aggregate price, operating income, or a royalty rate by tons to arrive at a value for their reserves. In doing so they probably overstate the value of their land.

On blowing nickel matte in a converter without quartz, first the oxidation of metallic iron and a part of FeS occurs without evolving sulfur dioxide, the formed FeO dissolves in a sulphide smelt and form a homogeneous oxysulphide smelt. On further increasing the FeO content, the oxysulphide separates into 2 layers. Based on the laboratory investigation of FeO-(FeS+Fe°) - (Ni3S2+Ni°) ternary phase diagram we have identified the separation region at 1250°C. The boundaries of the separation region have the form of an arc and the composition of the separated oxysulphide layers is defined by the canodes. In the nickel or copper-nickel matte - silicacalcium oxide slag system at 1250°C three layers, namely sulphide, oxysulphide, and slag may be formed. A high slag basicity due to the presence of CaO can serve to enhance the activity of FeO; a low nickel content in the matte corresponds to a high concentration of FeS therein; FeO from slag and FeS from the matte form a homogeneous FeO-FeS solution, i.e. an oxysulphide layer. The investigation on the "Camebaks" apparatus and by the nuclear gamma-ray resonance spectroscopy method of the phase composition in a slowly cooled oxysulphide layer has shown the presence of four phases: wustite, troilite, ferronickel grains, and calcium oxide-silica inclusions. Knowledge of regularities in the oxysulphides formation makes it possible to use them in pyrometallurgy of nickel and cobalt or preventing their formation.

The paper studies the flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as: bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, respectively, using the new effective collector - H205 which has been developed by Baotou Research Institute of Rare Earth, and describes their flotation properties. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH values, Rare Earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium and calcium bearing intergrowth minerals (barite and calcite) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be successfully obtained by H205 as collector with water glass as depressant. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and reagent dosage on the flotation were investigated in the test. Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation separation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for H205 and RE cations by theorical analysis shows that H205 formed chelate complex with RE cations and adsorbed on the surfaces of RE minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by water glass can be explained as: H2Si03, HSi03 and gummy SiO2 hydrolised from water glass are selectively adsorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, under pulp pH value 8.5 to 9.5.

Recent developments in the methods of measuring rock motion close to the contour at the moment of blasting have given an improved understanding of the extent of rock damage caused by different charge systems. The paper presents the new results and the methods of prediction of damage zones which are used in Sweden for the design of contour blasting rounds. A survey is given of the tools and the techniques for smooth blasting that are now used on a routine basis in Sweden.

Approximate figures for petroleum production in Argentina for 1929 show an increase of only about 300,000 bbl. over production for 1928. This increase is due to greater yield in the Plaza Huincul and in the Salta regions. Table 1 shows the distribution of production in the various fields of the whole country, using estimates for the later months of the year. The outlook for production remains about the same as in 1928. It is believed that in northern Argentina there are regions that contain oil, but they are yet unexplored. Notable traces of oil at depths between 1280 and 1390 m. have appeared in a 1500-m. boring in Comodoro Rivadavia, but their importance is unknown.

Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are vast structures that respond to site-specific characteristics, rate of production, placement techniques, and the physical and mechanical properties of tailings. As a common denominator, TSFs are in some degree vulnerable to failure due to liquefaction, poor management, slope instability and/or unusual climatic events. In practice, stability of TSFS is determined by calculating a minimum Factor of Safety (FOS) using the Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM). However, it has been proven that relying exclusively on the limit equilibrium approach is not accurate because it is basically a static method that does not take into account the stress-strain distribution and displacement experienced by the constitutive materials of a TSF. In order to overcome these limitations of the LEM, the finite element method - Shear Reduction Technique (SRT) has been used as a more reliable tool for TSFs stability assessment. This paper presents a comparative stability analysis between an upstream tailings storage facility (UTSF), and a water retention tailings dam (WRTD) under static and pseudo-static states using simplified and rigorous LEMs and the SRT. Additionally, and taking into consideration the intrinsic uncertainty of tailings properties, sensitivity and probabilistic analyses in the form of Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) and the Point Estimate Method (PEM) are applied to determine the Probability of Failure (Pf) and Reliability Index (ß) of each TSF. It is shown that the friction angle of UTSF?s foundation and the core?s cohesion of the WRTD are the main variables that govern stability. Further analysis shows that the WRTD has a higher reliability index and a lower probability of failure than the UTSF.

Measurements have been mode of the effects of tempering and austenitizing heat treatments, the work-hardening characteristics, and the effects of test temperature and strain rate on the properties of a low-carbon Fe-18 pet Ni martensitic alloy. In many respects the alloy behaved quite similarly to cold-worked iron. One notable quality was the excellent ductility at temperatures as low as 20°K. Many of the qualities of the maraging steels could he related to the properties of the Fe-Ni matrix. THE 18 pet Ni maraging steels have demonstrated that unusual combinations of strength and toughness may be obtained by age hardening a low-carbon Fe-Ni martensite matrix.' These properties must, to some extent, reflect the properties of this Fe-Ni matrix, and therefore an understanding of the properties of this matrix is a prerequisite to a complete understanding of the steels. There have been several recent studies of Fe-Ni-C martensites, but not much attention has been paid to alloys with very low carbon contents. At low carbon levels the crystal structure of these alloys is essentially bee.2 Electron transmission microscopic examination of a 20 pet Ni binary alloy showed martensite platelets separated by low angle boundaries.3 Plastic deformation of the low-carbon alloys has been shown to proceed by wavy glide.4 The hardness of these martensites is typically RC 28, and their yield strengths are 70 to 80 kg per sq mm.2, 5 Their ductility is excellent. Room-temperature tensile elongations of 18 pet and reductions of area of 70 pet have been observed in an Fe-18 pet Ni binary alloy.5 These observations have provided a qualitative understanding of the flow characteristics of these alloys. To date, however, no thorough study of their properties has been made. In particular, it is not known to what extent the deformation characteristics of low-carbon martensites are similar or dissimilar to those of pure iron or other bee metals. The present work was undertaken to provide more detailed information on the flow characteristics of a low-carbon Fe-18 pet Ni martensite. PROCEDURES, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION Materials. A 40-lb heat of the Fe-18 pet Ni alloy used in this study was made by vacuum-induction melting. The charge materials were electrolytic iron and electrolytic nickel. A carbon boil was used to achieve deoxidation. After the boil the heat was refined by additions of 0.1 wt pet Ti and Al. This is the 10th annual tabulation of US mineral royalties published in MINING ENGINEERING. The first year, 1982, the author solicited information about royalties and the cost of reserves. That column contained only a few royalties - not enough to tabulate. Since then, the response has been sporadic but the entries have grown to more than 300. Some have been deleted. Some of the older information has been deleted to make room for new entries. All indications suggest that the readers enjoy and use the information. But more information is needed. Russian practice In 1989, this column gave a brief history of mineral leasing and royalty payments as the concept applies to mining in the United States. This year's narrative deals with information about the mineral ownership in Russia. That country is in political and economic turmoil, including administrative systems and methods. And many laws are likely to change. What follows describes the Russian system of mineral ownership as of early 1992, according to Kirill Kavun. He begins "All the subsurface space of the Russian Federation with minerals contained belongs exclusively to the state. This forms the Common State Mineral Fund. Land parcels may be state, municipal, public or private property. They may be let to be owned and used by individuals, juridical persons, national/territorial or administrative/ territorial formations." This seems to apply to surface rights, as known in the US.

Self-diffusion coefficients have been measured for iron in wustite (700° to 1000°C) and for cobalt in cobaltous oxide (800&apos; to 1350°C) by means of radio-isotopes. Both sectioning and decrease of surface-activity methods have been used and a particular shortcoming of the latter method has been disclosed for wustite. The effects of oxygen pressure on the composition of cobaltous oxide and on the diffusion coefficient of cobalt in the oxide have been established. The effect of the preparation conditions of the cobalt-oxide specimens on the diffusion measurements has been determined. It has been concluded that diffusion of cobalt occurs via vacant cation sites and that a cobaltous-oxide disk reaches equilibrium with its environment in a time which is very short compared with that needed for diffusion of the radio-isotope. THE availability of radioactive isotopes in recent years has permitted the measurement of many self-diffusion coefficients which were hitherto impossible to determine. With the advent of radioactivity, the method of measuring diffusion coefficients has also changed. The earlier sectioning method by which the concentration profile of the diffusing species was determined in the diffusion specimen has often been rejected in favor of the decrease of surface-activity method first developed by Von Hevesy,&apos; and extended by Steigman, Shockley, and Nix,&apos; and Raynor, Thomassen, and Rouse." With the experimental arrangement where an infinitely thin deposit of tracer is diffused into a semi-infinite cylinder, the decrease in activity of the active face due to diffusion of the tracer into the specimen is measured by counting the active face before and after diffusion. Under these conditions, the appropriate solution of the diffusion equation is R = e*(l-<K/Z) [1] where R is the ratio of the counting rates after-to-before diffusion, $& is the Gaussian error integral of \/Z, and Z is defined as Z = p2Dt, p being the linear-absorption coefficient of the detected radiation in the diffusion specimen, D the self-diffusion coefficient, and t the diffusion time. In the older sectioning method the concentration distribution of the tracer is found after diffusion by analysing thin parallel sections cut from the active face of the diffusion specimen. As seen from the solution of Fick&apos;s second law for the distribution of an infinitely thin source after diffusion into a semi-infinite cylinder the log of the concentration plotted against x&apos; will be a straight line of slope log e/4 Dt. The diffusion coefficient thus can be calculated directly. The units of the tracer concentration are completely arbitrary, since any change in units does not change the slope of the log c vs x2 lot. Although both of the above methods have been widely used, a thorough experimental comparison does not appear to have been made. Introduction So many minerals and mineral products are used in the glass industry that it would require an unduly long paper to deal adequately with all of them. Only those that go to make up the batch for the more common types of glass will be discussed here, and even with these only, the list is a lengthy one. It is true that for the body of the glass comparatively few materials are required-as silica sand, soda-ash, lime, and feldspar. The others are used mainly to colour or decolorize the glass, or to give it some other desired characteristic, such as high lustre, greater physical strength, or opalescence; but, although they may be present in very small quantities, they are just as in-dispensable to the glass industry as are the main constituents of the batch. Sand Sand is essentially quartz, the dioxide of silicon, Si02. Most glass contains from 71J to 75 per cent silica. Sand for use in the glass industry, or &apos;glass sand&apos;, is obtained both from deposits of unconsolidated material, commonly referred to as &apos;sand&apos;, and from solid rock-sandstone, quartz, or quartzite. For the manufacture of glass, the material must possess a high degree of purity, as noted below, so that, although sand is widespread in most parts of the world, and sandstone, quartz, and quartzite are not at all uncommon, it is only in certain places that suitable deposits are found. At the present time, most of the glass sand used in Canada is imported from France, Belgium, and the United States. The French material, from Fontainebleau, near Paris, is known the world over as a very high quality glass sand. That from Belgium is nearly as good and is lower is price.

Aluminum alloys, in common with most other metallic alloys exhibit slight density changes with variations in temper achieved by heat-treatment, which usually are the result of the variation with temperature of the solid solubility of the various alloy constituents in the solvent metal. Changes in density are, of course, most marked in conditions that exhibit the maximum variation in solid solubility of the constituents. In aluminum alloys these conditions usually prevail when alloys are quenched from just below the melting point and are subsequently reheated to some lower temperature. Since commercial heat-treatments may be of this type, the density changes, although small (of the order of 0.3 per cent which may be compared with the density change of about 1.5 per cent involved in the transformation, at ordinary temperatures, of gamma to alpha iron during the hardening of steel), may in some specific applications necessitate quantitative consideration. This phenomenon has been investigated extensively in the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America over a period of years. A number of investigators &apos;-5t have observed and measured the density changes accompanying the heat-treatment of aluminum alloys. In general, these changes have not been directly translated to dimensional changes and their significance has been overlooked to some extent by the practical user of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to consider some practical aspects of these density and dimensional changes. These density changes were given some consideration in 1917 in connection with the use of aluminum-alloy pistons for aircraft engines. Investigations by Lea and Shakespear were reported in some confidential reports of the British Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Light Alloys Subcommittee, during 1917 and 1918, which are not generally available in published form. When the phrase "selection of coal for carbonization" is used, there is always the implied continuance of thought "to make good coke.&apos;&apos; The reason for this, of course, lies in the fact that, in almost all instances, when coal is carbonized coke is the principal product. Under certain conditions the yield of gas may also be a factor, but even here it must be secondary to the coke yield, for in every instance coke represents the largest single product of the process. The importance of coke to the byproduct industry has been considerably enhanced during the past 20 years because of the continuously decreasing financial returns of all the by-products. This fact will account, in part, for the rebirth of interest and investigation in the carbonization process during the past 10 years. Many papers have been written on this subject, with naturally divergent thoughts because of the diversity of interests, but in each instance the common aim was the same—the making of better coke. Scope of Investigation In perusing this literature, the writer was struck with the constantly recurring imposed condition of asking for better coke, but with the distinct unwillingness to make any concession to temperature of carbonization. When there is a high demand for coke, the only means by which the industry can increase the quantity is to shorten the coking time by an increase in temperature, or to increase the quantity of low-volatile coal, or both; and since in many instances the percentage of low-volatile coal can be increased only in small quantities, because of factors to be discussed later, the big increase must come from shortening the coking time. When this is done most of the improvement accomplished by the selection of the coals in the mixture is lost. It is not felt necessary in this paper to discuss the advantages of minimum ash and sulphur and other materials in coal. The value of minimum contents of these materials in coke is well established. When the use of coals high in these contents is dictated, the selection of coals, as we will consider it here, cannot apply to full advantage. The scope of this paper, then, will be to discuss the factors of inherent coal characteristics and operating procedures that influence coke quality, for they are fundamentally related and both must be considered if we are to attain our objective of better coke. A study of either must embrace a study of both simultaneously. To properly evaluate the influence of the coal and to help in the selection, we must first be able to appraise the coke, and interpret fairly the influence of the process in all of its aspects. In mid-1979, J&L Steel Corporation experienced rapid failure of pillars after only two weeks&apos; operation with a combination of full retreat and partial mining in the 154 Road Section of its Nemacolin Mine, Greene County. The rate of advance of the "squeeze line" was very rapid for the first 500 feet, but it slowed down considerably as it approached some large coal blocks and gas well barrier pillars. After moving all section equipment out tc a safe distance, all accessible headings and crosscuts were filled with cribs and tri-set posts to prevent further spread of the squeeze. At one time, there was great apprehension by mine management that without implementation of some immediate corrective measures the safety of #3 airshaft and the only haulage and access road to the 8 Road mining area would be in jeopardy. In September, 1979, the U.S. Bureau of Mines established convergence monitoring stations outby the squeeze area. Readings were taken at weekly intervals until January, 1980, and monthly thereafter. Mathematical calculations, plot- ting of contour maps, and graphing of total convergence at different stations were used to follow and analyze the progress of the squeeze and provide guidelines for mining plans in the adjoining areas.
