The key to concentrator automation is practical means for obtaining continuous assay data from concentrator streams. The technique most successfully used is x-ray fluorescence analysis. The practical reality of on-stream x-ray analysis has been achieved through effort over the past twenty years, marked by an occasional breakthrough, but more typically a step-by-step development to which many individuals and organizations have contributed. The net result of this progress is the present capability to install on-stream x-ray analyzer systems on a turn-key basis. It is now possible to provide all components of an x-ray analysis system as a completely engineered unit which can be put into immediate use, minimizing needs for specialized application knowledge to benefit from continuous assaying in process control. The economic factors which influence the choice of system and limitations of the x-ray fluorescence technique for slurry analysis are reviewed.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. Exploration for gold .deposits on Hispaniola has taken place sporadically over the years but has expanded in the past decade. There are veintype, disseminated, alluvial and elluvial deposits. Investigations were previously undertaken in Haiti by combined Haitian, Bureau of Mines, and UN geological teams at Grand Bois Limbe(Milot) and Cap Coq areas. Later studies were conducted at the Miches and Moncion districts. Gold occurrences were reported in quartz, silicic-barite veins and gossans. An important deposit ?at Pueblo Viejo is? a disseminated type where extraction is taking place in the oxidized zone. Exploration by Japanese and West German firms with local geologists are described in this paper together with Pueblo Viejo, Miches, Restauracion, Milot, and Meme ?areas where occurrences are known. Copper deposits with associated gold va1ues are also described. These include vein deposits in Central Cordillera and disseminated deposits at Terrier Rouge and Blondin.

"Fluctuation in market price of mineral products has enforced mining companies to cut down their operating costs. One useful way of reducing operating costs in mining operations is to make optimal operational decisions, incorporating efficient mining fleet management systems (FMS). Over the last 50 years, several types of FMS have been developed and introduced in the mining systems around the world. However, there are two major shortcomings in existing systems. Firstly, none of the existing systems consider effects of the short-term plan on dynamic truck assignment. Secondly, most of the existing FMSs make decisions in a way that optimize a specific objective while ignoring others. Herein, we propose a multi stage and multi objective FMS that deals with aforementioned shortcomings of the currently available systems. The developed FMS, in its upper stage, links semi-dynamic operational decision making process to the short-term production plan by simultaneously assigning shovels to mining faces and allocating trucks to the shovels by implementing its first multi objective decision making model. Then in its second stage, in a real time dynamic decision making process, it assigns trucks to shovels and corresponding destinations by optimizing its second multi objective decision making model. The developed fleet management system has been verified using an Iron ore case study and the results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Open pit mining method is the most common method to mine mineral from the earth. Based on Wetherelt and van der Wielen (2011) there exist 2500 open pit metal mines that are categorized as industrial scale mines. Over all of those, the amount of material handled using truck and shovel material handling system is more than the amount handled by all other systems together (Humphrey & Wagner, 2011).It has been proven by several studies that more than 50 percent of operating cost in a truck and shovel based open pit mining operation is accounted for material handling (Moradi Afrapoli & Askari-Nasab, 2017, Alarie & Gamache, 2002, Ahangaran et al., 2012). Thus, introducing even 1 to 2 percent cut in its material handling cost saves huge amount of money for the stakeholders. Over the last 50 years, two major areas have been identified to cut this cost. On one hand mining industries have been implementing equipment with higher production capacities, and on the other hand, researchers have been developing operations research techniques to make dynamic decisions as close to optimal as possible to deduct operational costs in truck and shovel based mining operations."

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations. OCCURRENCES of salt in Alberta have been mentioned and described by the writer in 1929 (l) and by Cole in 1930 (2). Brine springs occur at a number of places along the valley of Athabaska river north of latitude 56 degrees, and also on the south margin of Salt prairie, twenty-five miles west of Fitzgerald in the vicinity of the 60th parallel of latitude, which is the boundary between Alberta and the Northwest Territories. These salt springs were visited by Sir James Richardson in 1820, and in the same year D. W. Harmon stated that " ... clown Salt river there are several places where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken with as much ease as sand along the seashore" (3). One hundred years later, in 1920, when the writer first visited these springs, the "dean white salt" which had accumulated about the springs was about 400 tons ( 4). This paper deals with a thick deposit of rock-salt which has been proved by drilling in the vicinity of McMurray. Particular attention will be given to a well drilled at Waterways early in 1936 by Industrial Minerals, Limited, when a continuous bed of rock-salt was penetrated with a thickness of 199 feet. As this paper is being presented, a salt plant is being completed and a production well is being drilled at the plant. < is salt deposit is in the vicinity of McMurray, close to the junction of the Clearwater and Athabaska rivets, in township 89, range 9, west of the 4th meridian. McMurray is about 240 miles northeast from Edmonton. As shown on Figure 1, Clearwater river, which rises at Methy portage, in Saskatchewan, enters Athabaska river at McMurray. Some three miles above the mouth of Clearwater river, the Hangingstone enters from the southwest. Waterways, where the latest salt development has taken place, is situated at the end of the Northern Alberta railway, a distance of 304 miles from Edmonton. This railway reaches the bottom of the Clearwater valley at Draper station, about 3 miles east of Waterways and near the mouth of Deep creek. The Draper bituminous sand plant is approximately half a mile east of Draper station. About one mile south of the townsite of McMurray, Horse river enters the Athabaska from the east.

"INTRODUCTION In the usual volumetric determination of uranium, the solution containing uranium is reduced in a Jones reductor, yielding a mixture of trivalent and tetravalent uranium; the trivalent uranium is oxidized to the tetravalent state by bubbling a stream of air through the solution. The resulting solution of tetravalent uranium is titrated with a standard oxidant, generally sulfatoceric acid, dichromate, or permanganate. It seemed likely that the same general procedure could be used in determining semimicro quantities pf uranium if the conditions affecting the variables involved were understood more clearly than at present. In the method described below, the use of ferric sulfate to oxidize tetravalent uranium allows the titration to be made at room temperature in an essentially colorless solution with sulfatoceric acid. The latter oxidant in turn permits the use of the very stable indicator, ferroin; with its sharp color change and exactly reproducible blanks.Solutions of uranyl sulfate were prepared by diluting a stock solution that had been standardized gravimetrically according to the method of Lundell and Knowles (8).3/ Solutions of sulfatoceric acid were prepared according to the directions of G. F. Smith (12) and were standardized against arsenic trioxide in the presence of osmic acid according to the directions of Glen (5). The cerium solutions were stored in 18-liter carboys fitted with siphon arrangements so that the bottles did not need to be opened and protected from light in a dark cupboard. Under these conditions, even the 0.01 N solution changed by less than 1 part per thousand over a period of about 6 months."

An investigation has been carried out to assess the effects of an applied voltage on the dissolution rate of MgO refractory in a steelmaking like slag. In this study corrosion results obtained from dip tests using a dense direct bonded MgO refractory in a CaO-SiO2-Fe2O3-FeO-MgO slag are presented. These results demonstrate that the application of a voltage across a dense MgO refractory-slag interface can change the rate of refractory dissolution. For the slag composition used and the voltage range tested, it was found that a maximum corrosion rate was obtained at a voltage setting of -0.45V. The results of this investigation have been explained in terms of voltage affects on Marangoni (interfacial tension induced) stirring and its effect on the MgO dissolution reaction that is at least partly controlled by mass transfer in the slag.

The viscosities of various FeO-SiO2 slags were calculated using a previously developed structural-based model. Using hole theory and the atomic pair model, an expression was derived to relate the viscosity to temperature and the fraction of the bridging oxygen in silicate melts. The deduced equation was successfully applied to predict the viscosities of FeO-SiO2 slags in the composition range of 0.1 < XSi02 < 0.423 for several temperatures. The calculated data agree well with the experimental viscosity data.

The peacetime activities of the Bureau&apos;s petroleum and natural-gas program have been reoriented to serve the needs of a national-defense program. When the United Nations sent troops to Korea after the North Korean Army crossed the 38th parallel in the latter part of June 1950, the Bureau&apos;s coordinated national program on petroleum and natural gas, with each major project forming an essential member of its framework, was carefully reviewed by those in charge of the work. As a matter of fact, the era of normalcy in which the petroleum and natural-gas research of the Bureau of Mines prospered during the fiscal year 19502/ was no sedative to the need for alertness on a national-defense front. The program, although conducted along peacetime lines in general, was scanned critically and repeatedly during that period to see where - if the need should arise -the emphasis could be shifted from peace to defense or war. Judging from the experience of two wars, it would not be long before the Bureau would be asked to use its trained technical personnel in applying techniques already learned in peacetime research to the requirements of munition and fuel needs of national defense. Near the end of January 1951, petroleum and natural-gas engineers of the Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive study of reservoir conditions in the Canyon Reef fields of Scurry, Borden, and Kent Counties, Tex. This work was preceded by published analyses of crude oils from Scurry County as early as April 1950. Well-informed persons in industry have estimated that these fields hold reserves that will yield 3 to 6 billion barrels of stock-tank oil. Although generally accepted good operating practices have been followed, engineering tests have shown that the natural energy, except in some favorable parts of the reservoir, will not be adequate for obtaining a high percentage of recovery. Correct information regarding the extent and availability of this vast reservoir of hydrocarbons is therefore of great concern to the Petroleum Administration for Defense in carrying out its responsibilities under the Defense Production Act.

Introduction Most primary molybdenite producers use a selective flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and nonsulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step. The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother), and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide, and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born et al. (1976) and Malhotra et al. (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50% of the total molybdenite flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors that would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate nonoil-based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil. A series of potential nonoil-based collector classes were identified and evaluated in the laboratory against the current collector system. The metallurgical performance of these collector classes was related to their chemical structures. The results of this study are discussed. Collector classes A survey of sulfide mineral collectors was performed with the objective of identifying and selecting potential collectors for molybdenite flotation. The available reagents were categorized into 10 general classes. Table 1 summarizes these collector classes, their chemical formulas, the manufacturers, and selected commercial collectors in each class that were evaluated in the present study. Experimental procedure A Climax ore sample, assaying 0.3% MoS2, 2.2% FeS2, 0.007% Cu, 0.003% Pb, and 0.03 oz per ton Ag, was used for this study. Standard laboratory rougher flotation test procedure involved grinding a 2-kg ore charge in a rod mill at 60% solids. Reagents were added to the rod mill including a collector, syntex (0.005 kg/t), pine oil (0.03 kg/t), lime (to adjust pH to 8), and sodium silicate (0.15 kg/t). The ground pulp was transferred to a 1000-g cell, and flotation was performed at 35% solids and 1800 rpm using a Denver D-1 flotation machine. Concentrate was collected for a flotation time of six minutes. The general approach used in the present study was to substitute the nonoil-based collectors at two to three different dosage levels (0.01 to 0.15 kg/t) for vapor oil in the bench-scale, open-circuit rougher flotation tests

Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). One dyke occurs in Block 12, and the other in Block 13, and both were stated to consist of a dark basic amphibole rock, called diorite for convenience. "Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the Gas produced with crude contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion.Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no carious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks,be equally effective in counter- acting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1920, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a ""composite"" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co, in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the toot being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, and the Parkersburg Rig and Reel Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistance to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the tanks were not subjected to contact with the quantities o highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of the aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in large quantities of brine would be handled, for pact experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines."

The broad front concept is based on the principle that gasification can be achieved more efficiently and completely from a plane broad combustion front in contrast to other geometries obtainable with current methods of gasification. By restricting combustion to a plane broad front, the ideal condition for gasification is achieved. A plane broad combustion front can be developed in coal by initiating and propagating combustion from the walls of an oriented channel and collecting product gases from another similarly oriented channel. Flow will then be directed along the highest permeability of the coal bed, the available cross-sectional area for fluid flow is substantially increased and, more importantly, the increased flow will be uniformly distributed throughout the whole mass of coal. The success of the method is greatly dependent on how well an initial and rigorous permeability survey and associated corrective measures yield a well-characterized coal bed. To maintain uniform reaction rates, the advance of the combustion front is located with pressure- or mass flow-transducers. These sensors are then connected to servo-controlled mufflers for controlling segments of the fire front which are advancing ahead of others. Finally, the development of the concept to overcome problems of roof collapse, reactant and product gas leakages, and water invasion are briefly summarized.

This presentation provides a critical review of the steps and tools to compile a complete hydrologic review of a mine property. The forces of regulation, increased scientific analysis, better tools, and stakeholder expectations have created a perfect storm of accuracy demand. Ausenco has developed protocol to achieve the desired end.

Sustained elevated metal and coal prices in 2011 continued to drive mining projects across British Columbia. The province is the top producer of copper, exporter of coal and the only producer of molybdenum in Canada. The province also produces significant amounts of gold, silver, lead and zinc and more than 30 industrial minerals. The total 2011 value of solid metal production is an estimated $8.6 billion and the outlook for 2012 is positive. British Columbia is poised to bring several new mines onstream in the next few years. Construction continues at the New Afton and Mt Milligan copper-gold projects that are anticipated to be open in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The provincial Environmental Assessment Office indicates there are 26 mine proposals in process with three currently under review and 23 in the preapplication stage. The following text briefly describes 2011 metal and coal mining activities in the five regions reported on by the provinces? regional geologists (Fig. 1).

"In this paper, the performance of the Knelson Concentrator and of the batch and continuous Falcon Concentrators are compared. The units are based on different operating principles, and as such they perform quite differently. The Knelson yields very high free gold recoveries over a wide size range of both the recovered and rejected species. It is ineffective in recovering very fine ( <15 µm) or flaky gold, as encountered in flotation feeds, concentrates or tails. It is the: preferred unit for gold recovery from grinding circuits. The batch Falcon is effective in the fine range, typically less than 37 µm for gold. Its recovery zone is quickly saturated when there is significant heavies in the feed. It works best as a pre-concentration unit. The continuous Falcon is a versatile unit which is capable of recovering fine heavies (density down to 5 g/cm3 ), especially from coarser gangue. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this presentation is to describe the mode of operation of two Canadian centrifugal concentrators, the Knelson and Falcon. It is hoped that it will prove informative to prospective users in the selection, testing and optimization for applications of either machine. The work is based on testwork both in Canadian mills and at McGill. I am indebted to many colleagues at these locations. Appropriate references will be made to articles further describing the work, either already in the open literature or in preparation.Although this work is meant to be more practical than scholarly, it is appropriate to begin by considering how the two units achieve selective recovery. This will become useful in establishing a suitable testing methodology, which will then be described, and interpreting typical results. In the last section I will attempt to define appropriate applications for the two units. This is a thankless task, as I am likely to miss some applications or to make projections based on partial results, as much of the work is still in progress. In deference to the reader and both manufacturers, areas where reasonable doubt still remains will be identified."

This investigation involved a study of the reactions occurring during aging of supersaturated a phase in a CIL-Si alloy. The aging processes at temperatures below 552°C were studied by means of metallography, microhardness, and electrical resistivity measurements. During the initial stage of aging in the temperature range 275o to 525oC an anisotropic phase, which is visible in the form of striations in the micro-structure formed prior to the appearance of the -phase. This transition phase has been designated k&apos; due to its structural similarity to the k phase. The rate of K&apos; formation during aging increased with aging temperature. At 450o and 525°C the reaction appeared to reach completion before significant amounts of precipitation were observed. The overall precipitation reaction in this system involved four stages: formation of formation of at a grain boundaries, growth of particles in 7-egions, and coagulation of into large particles. The relative role of each of these processes is dependent on the temperature of aging. The formation of phase from supersaturated a during aging increases the electrical resistivity and slightly increases the hardness of a 4.9 pct silicon alloy. The formation of during aging decreases the electrical resistivity and increases the hardness until coalescence of particles begins during the final stages of aging. The coalescence of results in a decrease of both electvical resistivity and hardness. THE available literature does not record a detailed analysis of the aging processes in Cu-Si alloys. Such an analysis has been difficult due to both the limited data available and misleading microstructural observations which have been reported. Previous work suggests that a rather complicated series of processes may be involved in the aging of supersaturated a. The present investigation is concerned with an analysis of the sequence of these aging processes in a 4.9 pct Si alloy. The currently accepted version of the Cu-Si equilibrium diagram, Fig. 1, was published by C. S. Smith in 1940.&apos; This diagram shows a eutectoid at 5.2 pct Si with the high temperature phase, having its composition range entirely to the right of this value. By quenching alloys in the composition range 4.6 to 5.2 pct Si from the region, Smith was able to retain the phase. However, this phase exhibited a striated microstructure which was anisotropic to polarized light. These striations were suggested by Smith to be duplex twins. Using an oscillating crystal X-ray method Barrett2 studied alloys containing 4.0 to 5.4 pct Si quenched from the and regions. The striations observed in quenched specimens were attributed by Barrett to quenching stresses. He found that striations could also be formed by deformation after quenching and identified them as stacking faults in alloys containing 4.0 to 5.0 pct Si. Barrett related the striations in alloys containing 5.0 to 5.4 pct Si both to stacking faults and to a metastable phase which he called The striated structure reported by smith&apos; was also obtained by Hoffmann, et al. 3 By deeply etching their specimens the anisotropic phase on the surface was removed, leaving a structure which was microscopically similar to pure copper. By means of X-ray analysis before and after deformation at room temperature it was concluded that the anisotropic phase was metastable This conclusion has been questioned by Barrett who attributes the discrepancy to superposition of k and lines on the powder patterns of Hoffmann, et alm3 The decomposition of supersaturated according to smith&apos; and Anderson,4 is very sluggish. However, Nony and Dreyer,5 and Hoffmann, et al.&apos; found that deformation increases the rate of decomposition. X-ray studies by Hoffmann, et al on
