Preventive maintenance practices are listed in the manufacturers' instruction books. In general, equipment that requires frequent and extensive preventive maintenance is generally the most costly. The manpower spent on these frequent trips to remote areas is such that it is usually better to invest in a more costly system which requires little preventive maintenance. The best preventive maintenance for the system is a good installation. 7.2 Preventive Maintenance and Inspections With any system, periodic inspection is required because of the corrosive atmosphere and adverse conditions that exist in underground mines. These inspections can spot potential trouble in the system. Repair or replacement at that time averts the possibility of losing effectiveness of all or part of the system. 7.2.1 Cables Approximately once per month all cables in the communications system should be inspected for kinking, chafing, cracking, wear, stretching, or other signs of physical abuse. Particular attention should be paid to cable glands at the entry or exit points to the various units in the system, where the cable goes around sharp corners, in the vicinity of holding cleats which may be clamping the cable too tightly causing potential damage, and across the areas where the cable is exposed to physical damage from outside sources, such as equipment or falling objects. If a cable is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible. It is mandatory that the ground leads and connections to carrier current phones be thoroughly inspected and maintained in good condition, since considerable hazard may exist to the operator or equipment if a ground connection is broken. 7.2.2 Pager Phones The most readily available test set to determine if a pager telephone is operating correctly is the pager phone itself. The following physical check of the system can be performed at any phone station. 7.2.2a Listen Circuit Remove the handset from its cradle and listen to determine if the circuit is functional, as indicated by the presence of noise or conversation on the line. If no noise or voice signals are present at the handset receiver, take the following corrective action: 1. Operate the handset press-to-talk switch several times. Any corrosion on the contacts of this switch may cause a receiver to be temporarily inoperative. Repeated operation may clear the condition. 2. Open the cabinet and see if the battery cables are properly connected and are making firm contact. Check the handset cable and its connections in the cabinet of the pager phone, and see if there is any evidence of a break in the cable, corroded contacts, or poor connections. 3. Remove the handset receiver earpiece by unscrewing it counterclockwise (to the left), and remove the receiver from the socket. Examine the handset cavity; in some units, a patch of cotton batting or floss is used as a barrier to reduce acoustic feedback in the handset. If the cotton patch has absorbed moisture, remove it and replace with a crumpled ball of soft rubber, stuffed just far enough into the handset so it will not touch the receiver or switch terminals. 7.2.2b Page Circuit and Talk Circuit Push the page switch, squeeze the handset press-to-talk switch, and call any other phone. Release the page switch

Three porphyry copper districts in southern Arizona are partly overlain by post-ore fanglomerates which share certain physical and petrologic characteris¬tics and which may comprise a distinct and significant class of rock. These units are the Locomotive fanglomerate of Ajo, the Helmet fanglomerate of Twin Buttes-Mission-Pima, and the Cloudburst formation of San Manuel-Kalamazoo, termed "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" herein. Post-ore units at Poston Butte and Lakeshore, Arizona, and Sar Chesmeh, Iran, also appear to fit this class. "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" are composed of poorly sorted conglomerates, lenticular sandstone beds, andesitic to rhyolitic flows and tuffs, and unique monothologic landslide breccias. They contain fragments of holyokeite - - a rare oligoclase lava of porcellaneous appearance. Their basal contacts are considered to be depositional and overlapping, sometimes complicated by later low-angle faulting. They arc quite different than the younger Cila, Pantano, and most "Whitetail" alluvial beds, and the older Amole, Recreation, Claflin Ranch, etc. elastics; in particular they are thinner and less widespread. Their ages are Eocene to late Oligocene. "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" may be genetically related to porphyry coppers as products of subsequent differentiation and volcanism, and sedimentation in short-lived basins of restricted area and extreme relief. They might be utilized as reconnaissance guides to target areas and as structural guides within target areas in the southwestern U.S., Northern Mexico, and elsewhere.

"The potential for mudrushes is a potential hazard that should be evaluated during cave mining studies. Mudrushes are a phenomenon that can have very different origins, but produce the same results: injury, loss of life, damage to property, excess dilution, production delays, or mine closure. Although mudrushes are more common in cave mines than other mines, any mining activity that enables the accumulation of fine particles and water is susceptible to mudflow. This paper describes the process developed by the authors during the past decade to evaluate the risk of mudrushes, specifically in caving and sublevel caving mines.RÉSUMÉ Un danger potentiel qui devrait être évalué durant les études d’exploitation par blocs foudroyés est la possibilité d’afflux de boue. Le phénomène des afflux de boue peut avoir des origines très diverses; les résultats sont cependant les mêmes : des blessures, des pertes de vie, des dommages à la propriété, une dilution excessive, des délais de production ou des fermetures de mines. Bien que les afflux de boue soient plus fréquents dans les mines exploitées par blocs foudroyés, toute activité minière qui permet l’accumulation de particules fines et d’eau est sujette à des coulées de boue. "Industrial sustainability looks to improve material and energy efficiencies, product quality and variety, and productivity within an industrial zone, thus pursuing the long-term sustainable development of the region. This paper introduces a systems-based modeling methodology, which provides industrial leaders with the ability to evaluate future production options to determine the path with the highest positive impact on both their own sustainability and the sustainability of the overall industrial zone. A comprehensive study on sustainable development of an auto-manufacturing focused industrial zone under uncertainty is illustrated. Introduction Sustainable development refers to a continuous process of improvements that must be followed in order to achieve a state of sustainability. In its most general form, a widely accepted definition of sustainable development was identified in the Brundtland Report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [1]. Sustainability will occur when the material and social conditions can be maintained or improved for human health and the environment over time without exceeding the ecological capabilities that support them [2]. An industrial zone is defined as a geographic area comprised of a network of industrial sectors, each composed of a number of entities. Such a zone is highly integrated and complex, and contains numerous uncertainties due to each industry’s extreme dependencies on its suppliers and customers throughout the product supply chain. In the context of an industrial zone, sustainable development refers to the continuous process of advancements in the zone, and the entities that comprise it, creating more value, wealth, and profits (economically viable dimension), providing environmentally benign products with less raw material consumption and waste generation (environmentally compatible dimension), and collaboration and a direct relationship among all involved in the supply chain, i.e. the corporations, employees, suppliers, investors, communities, customers, etc. (socially responsible dimension). These are the triple bottom lines of industrial sustainability. In order for economic, environmental, and social sustainability improvements to be successfully implemented within an industrial zone, the industrial decision makers must possess system-wide analysis abilities. The analysis of the sustainable development of an industrial zone involves decisions at the local, regional, or national levels, which are complex and involves handling of ill-defined parameters with a high degree of uncertainty due to the imperfect understanding of the underlying issues [3]. This work focuses strictly on the uncertainties in future zone planning and a method and a scenario based approach that can be used to evaluate the sustainable development of an industrial zone among these uncertainties."

Practices used to grow vegetation on stressed areas, the beneficial aspect of the improved aesthetic appearance of company properties from the point of view of public relations and the improved approach to the workplace by the employee are discussed. The revegetation of the tailings area and its gradual transformation into a Wildlife Management Area is reviewed.

The studies conducted by Laplante and coworkers (1983,1984) with flotation of galena and quartz, showed that the rate of flotation reaches a maximum value for a certain intermediate value of the air flow rate. A similar, though less pronounced, effect of the air flow rate on the selectivity was also observed. Luttrell and coworkers (1985) showed that the size of air bubbles has a significant effect on both rate and selectivity of coal flotation. These two studies used flotation tests in which no froth layer was formed. This note describes effects of the air flow rate and bubble size on the rate constant and selectivity of coal flotation, using a mechanical laboratory machine with a froth layer allowed to form. Experimental A raw, dry ground Illinois coal was used in flotation tests. Tap water with a natural pH of 7.0 to 7.8 was used throughout the tests. No other reagents were used. The starting concentration of coal in the pulp was 86 g/L. A standard flotation machine with the pulp volume of 5 L was used in experiments. Three different air flow rates were employed, resulting in three air escape velocity values of 14, 30, and 70 cm/min. The air escape velocity (AEV) was calculated as the ratio of air flow rate (Qa) to the slurry surface (Ss) in the machine. For a comparison, the upper limit of air escape velocity values used in commercial size flotation machines is between 70 and 100 cm/min (WEMCO, 1983). A machine consisting of a generator of fine bubbles and a separatory column, described elsewhere (Szatkowski and Freyberger, 1985), was used for some tests where bubble size lower than that generated in the standard machines was required. Prior to a flotation test, a batch of coal was mixed with water in the flotation cell for at least 10 minutes to ensure that all coal was thoroughly wet. Then the specified amount of fuel oil was added and the pulp was conditioned for five minutes. The specified amount of MIBC was added 15 seconds before the end of conditioning. After air flow was opened, flotation products were collected for 0 to 30, 30 to 60, and 60 to 120 second intervals. Content of the combustible material in samples was determined by subtracting the ash content from 100%. A photographic technique was used to determine initial distributions of bubble size generated by the flotation machines. Bubbles generated in water containing the prescribed amount of the frother but no solids were photographed against a black background. The average diameter and standard deviation were then calculated for each set of flotation conditions. The method gives results reproducible within k 5% of the average bubble size. Table 1 contains information about the measured bubble size distributions expressed by the average bubble diameter (Db) and the standard deviation ( SD ) . A major contributor to the problem of short life expectancy for blade-type conveyor belt cleaners is uneven wear along the blade edge. Uneven wear results in the formation of channels in the blade edge, which allow material to be carried back between the blade and the belt. In an effort to reduce the uneven wear problem, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has studied the mechanisms responsible for effective belt cleaning. From this study emerged a design for a cleaner blade that would greatly reduce uneven edge wear. The design consists of a standard cleaner blade incorporating air passages that allow for the expulsion of air along that part of the blade edge in contact with the conveyor belt surface. The results of 18-h tests indicated that the expulsion of air on the blade edge prevents scratches from developing into deep grooves. These tests showed that effective blade cleaning life can be extended 25 times using the pneumatic cleaning blade, compared with solid metal cleaning blades.

This study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Indiana County, Pa., is the second in a series of Bureau publications appraising the Nation's coking-coal reserves by counties and the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. The first publication dealt with the preparation characteristics of the principal coal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Over 95 percent of the coal remaining in Indiana County is in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, and Lower Kittanning beds. Isolated patches of Pittsburgh-bed coal are present, and the Upper Kittanning bed is found in minable thickness at some locations, but production from these sources is not large. The greatest production is from the Freeport beds, which account for nearly 70 percent of the Indiana County coal output. These beds usually contain two or more shale or hone partings and in many places are high in sulfur. The large proportion of bony coal in the Freeport beds 'produces a relatively high-ash product. Mining practices vary from place to place, but it is frequently necessary to leave certain bony portions of the bed in place in order to load a satisfactory product. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. In addition a discussion is given of the mineralogical constitution, size analysis, and degree of liberation of ash constituents of the various samples.COAL SAMPLESRepresentative samples of coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams were obtained for testing.

Abstract- The process of arriving at the size and grade of: (a) a newly-discovered body of mineralization, (b) a potential ore resource, (c) an orebody proposed for mining, or (d) the ore reserves in a mine, requires fundamental geological, and geometrical determinations as well as physical and chemical analyses. This paper outlines geological and geometrical features considered critical, in the authors' experience, in realistic reserve determination. These are discussed under the headings "The Four Cs". They include the Character, type or nature of the mineralization; the Continuity of various types of mineralization in the deposit; various key concerns in the Calculation besides the mathematics; and the Classification section which refers to basic considerations in classifying a mineral estimate. It is suggested that the responsibility for the calculation of a Resource or Reserve should be that of a geologist experienced in the ore type under review. Further, it should be the responsibility of the board of directors of the company owning the deposit to ensure that a sufficiently experienced person is chosen to carry out the process.

DURING the past 5 years, five new copper-smelting plants have been built and put into operation in the State of Arizona. The monthly copper output from these plants averages from 5,000,000 to 18,000,000 lb. Previously, there never was as much activity in copper-smelting plant construction in the same length of time in all the rest of the world. Naturally, in this amount of work, some new problems were met and new features in plant design and. equipment developed. Some of these features are described in this paper. CONCENTRATE HAULING, UNLOADING AND SAMPLING SYSTEM (a) Concentrate Car The International Smelting Co. has provided at its plant at Miami specially designed cars for hauling the concentrates from the mills of the Inspiration Copper Co. and the Miami Copper Co.. The car has a bottom that is readily made tight to hold flotation concentrates and is quickly and cheaply unloaded. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show views and details of the car. The main feature of this car is the slot in the bottom throughout its length, which is closed by means of short planks that overlap like ship-lap as shown by Fig. 1. At one end of the car an iron gate operated by a screw and hand wheel is provided, which clamps or presses the planks together, making the bottom tight. A removable tapered plug rests vertically over this gate when the loading of the concentrates at the mill commences.

Real economic growth for the year will most likely exceed the Administration's estimate of 3.2%, up from 2.9% in 1986, unless consumers change their spending patterns more than expected as a result of the October stock market decline. The economy grew at a real annual rate of 3.7% in the first three quarters of the year, Analysts agree that the stock market decline will slow economic growth-- most have lowered their growth expectations for 1988 by about 1%; but few would argue that the economy will slow significantly in the fourth quarter of 1987. [ ] During this economic recovery, personal consumption expenditures provided the main impetus for growth and a deeping trade deficit, the main hindrance to growth. In 1987, however, personal consumption expenditures grew at a lower rate than the overall economy. Mush of the economic growth resulted from a reduced trade deficit and growing investment by business in equipment to improve productivity and to meet the domestic and foreign demand for products. The declining value of the dollar resulted in a better competitive position for U.S. goods but also contributed to a rising rate of inflation as imports rose in price. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted index for gross national product, was still far below the rates in the early 1980k, however. More than 2 million jobs were created during the year, predominantly in the service sectors of the economy, and the monthly unemployment rate in September fell to the lowest level in a decade. Then, after 13 months of decline, the unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage point to 5.9% in October.

"The rising demand for metals today, coupled with the scarcity of primary sources for raw materials threatens both technological advancements and industrial manufacturing. In order to meet the demand, metals and other resources trapped in waste streams, have to be harnessed. This philosophy supports circular economy, where metals and other resources are kept in a closed loop. The pickling acid recovery system of most stainless steel production is one such example where the dissolved metals such as iron, nickel and chromium are currently not completely recovered due to the limitations of the current technologies. The aim of this study was to assess the available metals recovery methods from extremely concentrated acids. The main aim is to simultaneously recover metals and keep sulphuric acid reusable in acid circulation process. From the available literature, the most promising methods were chosen for laboratory experiments. Based on experimental work, the results and observations of electrodeposition, solvent extraction, and freeze crystallization are provided. INTRODUCTION Pickling in stainless steel production is an essential surface treatment process (Regel-Rosocka, M. (2010); Agrawal and Sahu, 2009). It is applied for removing surface films such as oxides and chromium-depleted layers to improve the corrosion resistance and surface finish of steel (Regel-Rosocka, 2010). Whilst the process greatly improves the surface finish of the stainless steel, it generates large amount of used acid, containing dissolved metals including chromium, iron, and nickel (Agrawal and Sahu, 2009). Recovery of acid is common practice for most steel producing industries (Nyman and Koivunen, 1986). In this work, acid regeneration process is investigated so as to simultaneously reusing sulfuric acid and recovering the dissolved metals. Recovery of valuable metals even in very small amounts would also bring additional revenue to the steel production industry. At a time when metal production has also been challenged by lack of natural resources for raw materials, secondary sources for metals such as the acid pickling process therefore, have greater potential as supplements. From earlier studies, electrodeposition (Giovanardi and Orlando, 2011; Kuznetsov et al., 200; Rögener et al., 2012; Surviliene et al., 2006), solvent extraction (Alguacil and López 1996; Haghshenas et al., 2009; Kesieme et al., 2013) and freeze crystallization (Beyer et al.,2003; Hasan et al.,2017; Van der Ham et al., 1999) are some of the most established potential methods. Earlier studies have also shown that simultaneous recovery of acid and metals would require combination of different methods. This is primarily due to the nature of very stable metal containing complex compounds formed during pickling. These complexes must be broken down to free the metals for further recovery processes."

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

"Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Mine is a copper-zinc operation located approximately 600 miles north-west of Winnipeg. Open pit mining began in 1973 at 10,000 Tpd., with a change over to underground mining in 1981 producing 7,500 Tpd. Ore is crushed to -3/4"" followed by rod and ball mill grinding (two ball mills in series), differential copper-zinc flotation, and dewatering. The copper and zinc concentrates are trucked 75 miles to Lynn Lake, where they are shipped by rail to the HBM&S smelter at Flin Flon.This paper describes a method used to predict the effect of grind particle size on metallurgical performance, as well as details on the copper and zinc metallurgical performance due to fine grinding in actual plant operation.Initial statistical studies on historical data (including ore source, head gr3de, grind, etc.) indicated that copper and zinc recoveries increased with fineness of grind, in the range of 50 to 65% -200 mesh.In order to extrapolate beyond 65% -200 mesh, and to develop expected nonlinear relations between grind, Cu concentrate grade, and recovery, the assays of screen fractions of copper concentrate and tailing were used to determin8 the relation between net smelter return (a function of grade and recovery) and grinding cost. The optimum economic grind would be that grind at which the net smelter return less grinding cost reached a maximum."

The solubility of chromium in liquid silver and that of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin have been determined by equilibrating Ike Liquid in a crucible of the solule metal. Generally the weight of solute in solulion was delermined both chemically and from crucible weight losses. The resulting weight percent solubilily of chromium in silver as a function of absolule temperature T is given by log w = -6660/T + 4.02 in the range 960° to 1445°C, and that of molybdenlttrl in tin by log w = —5050/T + 1. 79 in the range 1200° to 2200°C. The values appear unaffected by minor changes in solute composition. Calculations aye made of the parlial molar heal and excess entropy of mixing. The estimated solubility of tungsten in tin is 0.001 pct at 2000°C. Evidence is presented that molybdenwm dissolves in tin without compound for mation and that tungsten and tin form W10Sn. RECENT developments in coatings, heat transfer, and brazing require a knowledge of equilibrium solubilities in a variety of systems at elevated temperatures. Of particular interest are solid-liquid interactions in metal systems involving dilute solutions. This investigation was undertaken since little is known about the phase relations or solubility of chromium in liquid silver or of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin.1,2 EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, high-purity metals or those of known impurity levels were used. Crucibles were machined from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten bar stock 1.3 cm diam and 2.2 cm long. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting and extruding iodide process crystals.3 The five chromium impurity alloys were in the form of 0.6-cm-diam swaged rod. A Cr-0.06N* alloy was prepared by exposure to NH3 at 1150°C in a closed quartz capsule for 24 hr. Because significant nitrogen was lost during annealing in argon at 1600°C,4 the estimated level was 0.01 pct N. Chromium and Mo,W crucibles were outgassed at 1200" and 1600°C, respectively, at 3 X 10-5 mm. The solvent was placed In crucibles of the solute metal- 6 g Ag in chromium, 0.4 g Ag in the five chromium impurity alloys, and 4 g Sn in Mo,W crucibles. The silver and tin series were outgassed at 900" and 110O°C, respectively, and held at the desired solution temperature in a tantalum resistance furnace under 1.05 atm 99.995 pct Ar. An equilibration time of 0.5 to 1 hr was chosen since 0.3-, I-, and 4-hr anneals at 1235°C for Cr-Ag yielded similar results. Temperatures were measured optically to +10°C under essentially black body conditions which were checked against the melting point of silver. The Cr-Ag and Mo-Sn,W-Sn series were respectively equilibrated at 990° to 1400°C and 1200" to 2000°C. Vaporization losses were generally held to <1 pct by the argon. In the 1800" and 2000°C anneals for 0.5 hr, the crucibles were placed in tightly sealed tantalum cans which kept tin losses to <5 pct. After the anneals, the specimens were furnace-cooled. One anneal was made on small Mo-0.02 C, Mo-0.5Ti-0.lZr, and tungsten crucibles containing tin at 2200°C. The metals were sealed in an electron-beam-welded tantalum can of minimum volume. After the anneal, tin was still present in each crucible, none of which was severely attacked. After equilibration, the saturated solvent metal was selectively removed from the crucible by acid leaching. Weight losses sustained by the crucibles were determined from the initial weight minus the final blank-corrected weight after acid leaching. Chemical analyses were performed on some of the samples. Hot 1:l HNO3-H2O removed silver from chromium with the blank running <0.1 mg or <0.002 pct on measured solubility. Tin was removed from molybdenum and tungsten by hot concentrated HC1 with the respective blanks amounting to -0.004 and -0.0004 pct in the presence of tin. The insoluble residues were weighed and checked for composition. The leaching solutions contained traces of the solute metals which were analyzed by colorimetric methods, Diphenyl Carbazide for chromium, Thiocyanate for molybdenum, and Dithiol for tungsten. The total of the two percentages found from the residue and leaching solution minus the blank gave the desired solubility values. On the basis of annealing empty molybdenum and tungsten crucibles, weight losses due to MoO3 or WO3 volatilization were found to be generally 10.4 mg and affect measured solubilities by <0.01pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chromium-Silver . Since no intermediate compounds are reported to form in the Cr-An system,&apos; crucible weight losses and chemical analysis of the entire melt should provide reliable measures of the chromium in solution. Values obtained by the two methods are in agreement as shown by the results for unalloyed chromium in Table II and plotted in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the results are consistent with those previously determined by melting equilibrated silver out of the crucible and analyzing calorimetrically for chromium.&apos; On the basis of limited thermal analysis data, the solubility of chromium in silver has been quoted as 8 pct at the monotectic temperature of -1445°C.1 This investigation indicates an extrapolated solubility of 1.38 pct which is believed to be more reliable. Iwo major studies of the Fe-Cr-C system are available in the literature. The earlier one of Kinzel and crafts&apos; forms the basis for the data most commonly quoted in works of reference (e.g., Metnls HandDook) though the later work of Bungardt el a1.&apos; is more extensive and amenable to analysis in terms of isothermal sections and so forth. However it is evident from examination of either of these studies that the delination of phase boundaries on the basis of the data obtained can only be very approximate. Indeed in several instances the data are so inconclusive that this delineation is a matter of opinion. This note is to report an analysis of experimentally determined carbon activity data in this system, which, originally intended as a means of checking the self-consistency of the data for a number of alloys, enables some conclusions to be drawn concerning the 10503C isothermal section of the iron-rich corner of the system as deducible from the data of Bungardt

The general properties of diffusion in GaAs are reviewed. A total of .fourteen atoms have been studied to date, and activation energies for eleven reported are (in ev): Ga (5.6), As (lo), Zn (2.49), Cd (2.43), Sn (2.5). Mn (2.75). S (4.0). Se (4.2). Ag (0.33), Cu (0.52). and Li (1.0). The dijfusion of the first eight atoms, as measured by Goldstein using radiotracer techniques, established the principle of sub lattice diffusion for both host and impurity atoms, since atoms substituting for gallium have lower activation energies than those substituting for arsenic. The diffusion constant of interstitial copper has been determined for the first time by Hall and Racette using heavily doped p-type samples in which interstitial copper predominates. The anomalous behavior of zinc, which has an abrupt diffusion front and a strong dependence on zinc concentration, has recently been quantitatively explained in terms of an interstitial-substi-tutional equilibrium-diffusion mechanism. Lithium and silver diffuse mainly interstitially, while the diffusion of phosphorus is complicated by the continual formation ofGap. Junction-migration measurements indicate diiferent results than radiotracer techniques, and this is one problem that still remains, together with discrepancies in cadmium-diffusion results, and an unexplained dependence of impurity diffusion on arsenic pressure. BESIDES the usual insights into the behavior of atoms in solids, studies of diffusion in semiconductors have additional importance for device applications. In fact, the amount of diffusion studies performed on a semiconductor might serve as a simple barometer of its technological importance. Thus, the information accumulated for GaAs is not yet quite comparable to that for germanium or silicon, but considerable knowledge is available. The diffusion of at least fourteen atoms has been investigated for GaAs, and the diffusion constants have been determined for eleven of these. Interesting results were found for GaAs that elucidated problems not previously solved for germanium or silicon. For example, the interstitial-diffusion constant for the very fast diffusant, copper, was first measured in GaAs. Also, solutions for interstitial-substitu-tional equilibrium diffusion in extrinsic material were provided first for GaAs, although they are ap- plicable to germanium, silicon, and other semiconductors. Studies in GaAs firmly established the concept of sublattice diffusion, which should have application in many different compound systems. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly the general state of knowledge concerning diffusion in GaAs. First some general aspects of diffusion will be covered, and next attention will be given to the results mentioned above. Diffusion in GaAs has been measured both by radiotracer and junction-penetration techniques, and some discussion will be given of differences in the two sets of results. The comprehensive work of oldsteinl-&apos; has served as the primary reference for the diffusion of well-behaved substitutional atoms in GaAs. Since a review has recently been presented of many of these reults, details of the diffusion data will not be repeated. Neither will any discussion be given of the experimental techniques of diffusion measurements, except to note here, in passing, the simplicity and effectiveness of the precision lapping device employed by Goldstein.&apos; I) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A) Summary of Experimental Results. Diffusion constants D = Do exp(E/kT) have been determined for eleven atoms in GaAs: a,&apos; AS,&apos; n,&apos;" Cd,&apos;" n,&apos; n,8 s, e,&apos; Ag,O CU," and i." These results are summarized in Table I. In addition, diffusion was investigated for phosphorus,4&apos;12 germanium,I3 and ilicon,&apos; but Do and E were not determined. Radiotracer techniques were used for most of the studies except for lithium, where a combination of chemical and electrical techniques was employed, and germanium and silicon, where junction-migration techniques were applied.
