A real Dorothy Dix title has been selec- ted for this paper. It has the advantage, however, of being capable of being interpreted in many different ways and hence I can select my own approach. You probably are thinking that this topic would be more appropriately handled by an Accountant. I wish to make it clear at the outset that I am not skilled in the sometimes mysterious ways of Accountants - likewise that profession frequently has difficulty in pinning down economists. We have our own strange ideas about profits, marginal efficiencies, cost/benefit analysis etc. What follows is in the main a mixture of two disciplines, probably in a form that few of the purists from either side would accept. Nor do I expect the reader to accept my own prejudices. The paper is designed to stimulate thought and discussion'on the subject. Emotive words such as "profit" and "loss" make for wide differences of opinion. At the time of writing there is a surprising degree of acceptance of the viewpoint that profits in Australia are too low and one is tempted to make this point of near agreement a starting Point.

Slurry pipelining, as now under-stood and practised, can only command marginal interest in Canada, as long-distance railway freight charges in this country are generally lower than slurry pipeline tariffs. Several alternatives to conventional slurry transmission are, however, now emerging, and two such alternatives are briefly discussed with reference to coal pipelining. In one, coal is transported as a suspension in oil; the other contemplates the movement of paste "slugs." Preliminary economic estimates indicate that the resulant process simplification and adoption of common carrier principles could lead to cost reductions that might make Western coal competitive with imported fuel in the power generating stations of eastern Canada. R ECENT appraisals of slurry pipelining techniques, some-what incongruously 'based upon the performance of successful installations (1,2), are making it increasingly apparent that current solids pipelining methods can only command marginal interest as methods of bulk commodity transportation (3). Anthracite has been mined from the Narragansett Basin of Rode Island and Massachusetts sporadically, and with limited success, for more than 170 years. Beginning in 1974, interest in the coal of the Basin was renewed because of increasing prices and supply uncertainties involving petroleum products. During 1974-77 the Bureau of Mines analyzed 28 samples of Basin coals and conducted washing tests on 20 of them. Results, reported herein, indicate that the coals are low-sulfur, moderate- to high-ash anthracites and semianthracites, suitable for physical preparation to a product generally containing less than 10 percent ash. Additional exploration, sampling and testing will be required to permit appraisal of the potential value of the Narragansett Basin coal resources.

Lonmin, earlier than any other primary platinum producer, had to deal with the concentrating and smelting of UG2-rich ores and concentrates respectively. Smelting was performed at a fairly modest scale compared to the company's industry peers in the platinum group metals (PGMs) industry, and was focused on smelting concentrates obtained through low mass pulls while still maintaining high recoveries at its concentrators. Lonmin gradually smelted larger quantities of UG2 concentrates. Initially two 2.3 MW Infurnco furnaces were commissioned in 1982, followed by three 5 MW circular 3-electrode Pyromet furnaces in 1991. Deep electrode immersions and moderately high hearth power densities were used in all the designs. Lonmin decided to continue with circular furnace technology when it planned its new high-intensity No. 1 Furnace. Neither Lonmin nor the technology supplier and EPCM company foresaw the challenges that scale-up would bring when applied to the smelting of UG2-rich concentrate blends. Superimposed on the high chromite content, was the low base-metal loading, mineralogical difficulties, and fine particle size that resulted from milling of all concentrates (especially UG2 and recycle materials within the smelter). Through a process of fundamental diagnoses of furnace run-outs and wear patterns observed during repairs, the main challenges operating this high-intensity furnace were identified as sulphur vapour corrosion of the copper coolers, uneven and unpredicted movements of refractory bricks with associated copper cooler lift and matte tapblock movement, the formation of three-phase 'mushy' zones, high refractory and taphole wear rates, uncertainty in matte level and associated insufficient matte buffer height, and high furnace operating temperatures. These factors seldom worked in isolation and will be explored in more detail in the paper. The variability in furnace feed characteristics led Lonmin to redesign Furnace No. 1, to invest in backup furnace capacity, and to invest in improved monitoring and control. These improvements consisted of online and high-frequency off-line monitoring of feed chemistry and mineralogy, online pressure monitoring of water-cooled circuits, an alternative matte liquid level measurement in the furnace, and electrode immersion estimation. Improvements were also made at the converters by installing and utilizing optical spectral analysis of the converter flame to characterize converter behaviour and achieve the desired iron end-point for white matte. This paper also briefly discusses the current and future expansion plans, as well as ancillary operations at the smelter such as flue-gas handling and materials handling.

A long-term, large-scale, disturbance-recolonization experiment with relevance to the environmental effects of deep seabed mining is described. The study is funded by the German government and was launched in the abyssal eastern tropical South Pacific Ocean in February-March, 1989. After obtaining pre-impact baseline environmental data, a 10.8 km2 (4.2 sq miles) circular area of seafloor was disturbed using a specially designed "plow-harrow" device. An initial post-impact sampling series was carried out immediately after disturbance followed by a second post-impact sampling series six months after the disturbance. Plans call for repeated visits to the site at two year intervals to monitor the anticipated slow recolonization process until the area is inhabited by a new, stabilized community.

Experiments were performed to determine the effects of mechanical vibrations on ordering in CuAu. The effects of 5, 10, and 15 kc vibrations were investigated over a range of ordering temperatures of 280° to 360°C. A decrease in the rate of ordering was observed at all frequencies and ordering temperatures. THE effects of mechanical vibrations on certain solid-state reactions have been noted by several investigators. In 1930, Mahoux' reported a substantial increase in the case depth of a steel sample nitrided under the influence of mechanical vibrations over that of an unvibrated sample. Similarly, an accelerating effect of vibrations on the diffusion of chromium in steel was noted. Guillet, in the same year, confirmed the results of Mahoux. More recently Schenck and schmidtmann3 studied the effects of low-frequency, alternating loads on the diffusion of carbon in steel. The results of their experiments, conducted at 500 cycles per min and large strain, (0.2 pct), indicated an acceleration of the process. These workers also reported an increase in case depth of a sample vibrated at 430 kc during a carburizing treatment. Effects of high-frequency vibrations on solid-state reactions have also been investigated by Gudzoff and Gavze6 and Fairbanks and Dewez.7 The former reported an acceleration of the age-hardening process in aluminum alloys. The latter noted changes in the structure and mechanical properties of steel annealed under the influence of vibrations. On the other hand, Altenburg4 and Ehringer5 have given some theoretical reasons and experimental evidence as to the improbability of any effect of vibrations on diffusion. Comprehensive surveys of the effects of vibrations on metallurgical reactions are given by Hiedemann' and Bergmann.9 None of the above investigations led to a physical description of the effects of mechanical vibrations on solid-state reactions. In the present study an attempt was made to gain an understanding of the influence of vibrations on nucleation and diffusion. The order-disorder transformation was chosen for investigation since its mechanism has been extensively discussed in the literature. Moreover, the progress of the transformation may be easily followed by observation of electrical resistance changes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The specimens used for the experimental observation of ordering rates were prepared from 50 at. pct Cu-Au alloy wire.* Each specimen consisted of a 0.02-in. diam wire approximately 10 in. long to which two copper potential leads were silver soldered, 2 1/2 in. apart, near one end of the wire. By implementing a converter downstream of the reduction furnace it is possible to broaden the product range significantly. As part of the North American regional activities during the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD) one project focused on the development of sustainability evaluations at the operations level. Engagement was identified as one of the seven important questions to be addressed. Engineers and scientists employed in the mining, minerals and materials production arenas must understand the importance of stakeholder engagement, both within and outside the operations as it is essential in the ongoing activities required to contribute to sustainable development. After developing the awareness that a social license can only be contemplated if engagement is in place, they also have to develop skills in engagement processes. This presentation will present the business case for engagement as well as an approach to motivate undergraduate mining engineers to embrace it. The presentation will also review some recent and ongoing research to improve the engagement process.

This paper describes the ventilation analyses performed for the access tunnels at the New Level Mine project (NLMP) at CodelcoÆs El Teniente operation outside of Rancagua, Chile. This new mine is anticipated to reach a final production of between 137 and 180 kt/d. Production from the NLMP is scheduled to start in the year 2017. The main access tunnels (MAT) are approximately 9 km in length, with one for personnel and supply access and the second one for ore extraction through a conveyor system. These two tunnels are a critical component of the initial stage 1 development and will be constructed independently of the existing mine workings. The tunnels were originally designed to be constructed with two tunnel boring machines. However, later analyses changed the construction approach to a conventional drill and blast technique. Because the design included two mid-tunnel ramp-to-surface connections, conventional mining methods would allow for development of the tunnels with multiple working faces to achieve a more rapid schedule. This paper presents the initial baseline considered for the ventilation design and the optimisation methodology applied by Codelco to minimise the airflow and pressure requirements of the ventilation system. Modifications to the design resulted in the addition of strategic airways and raises that could provide a saving of approximately 1 MW, when compared to the original design.CITATION:Acu±a, E, Alvarez, R, Wallace, K and Prosser, B, 2013. Because jackleg rock drills are a potential source of hand vibration exposure, they can effectively produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This will affect operator efficiency and mine productivity. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles using new materials to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. In previous work developed by the authors (1991), a detailed study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicated that, for an elastomer-based handle design, the overall acceleration level experienced by the hand can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It was also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz. This paper presents an investigation of the long-term effectiveness of an elastomer-cushioned handle under different conditions underground. In this study, sponsored by the Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada (MIROC), a number of cushioned handles were quantitatively and qualitatively tested in five operating mines. The vibration testing program has indicated that the cushioned handle can reduce overall vibration levels by as much as a factor of three. The qualitative assessment program of the cushioned handles by the drill operators has indicated some degree of preference for the cushioned handles over the steel handles, if certain design modifications are performed. This research program indicated that cushioned handles have the potential to become the dominant method with regard to vibration reduction and operator performance.

As part of an overall laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing and other techniques relating to the more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test was developed for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or within a batch of pellets. Between pellet batches, each containing a different level of bentonite, the dry fracture load is directly proportional to the bentonite content between pellets of the same batch, however, the fracture load is inversely proportional to the bentonite level; this is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that larger pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than the smaller.

Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

During the past decade the genesis of the lead- and zincdeposits of the Mississippi valley has received special attention from many distinguished observers. But their united egorts, instead of settling all disputed questions, have, in many respects, involl-ed the general problem in greater uncertainty than would be thought possible under the circumstances. In place of the harmony of opinion that might be expected, there is unexpected disagreement, largely due to the fact that, instead of giving attention to a possible multiplicity of ore-producing conditions among the different deposits, the attempt has been made to bring all deposits under a single genetic head. To a new observer of the lead- and zinc-deposits of the Mississippi valley, it appears at the outset that all the deposits cannot possibly have had the same genesis. In fact, different modes of origin have been often asserted for the ore-bodies, but the difficulty has been that each writer has referred them either all to one category or all to another, and no intermediate ground has been considered possible. Such a position now appears to be clearly untenable. The opinion that, in the deposits of the region under consideration, the ore-materials represent original depositions, made at the time the rocks themselves were formed, is no longer held by any authority, and therefore need not be considered here. This paper deals with the practical application of the Dutch State Mines cyclone separator for fine-coal cleaning. The more important operating variables are discussed, and results of a number of continuous-scale tests on various fine coals with a 6-in. cyclone separator are given. Descriptions of the Cyanamid Pilot Plant and the 50 tph Cyclone Separator Plant at the Emma Washery in Holland are included. TODAY, as never before, the coal producers of this country are faced with the necessity for obtaining maximum yield of marketable coal of all sizes down to and including the finest. Particular interest is being displayed in a more effective means of recovering the finer sizes which in the past so often have been discarded to waste or treated by inadequate equipment. The reasons for this interest are easily understood. Rising mining costs have resulted in the increased use of mechanized equipment underground for full seam mining. This, in turn, means more refuse in the run-of-mine and also more fines in the feed going to the cleaning plant. Stringent antistream pollution laws now make it necessary at least to impound the fines, and usually it is a paying proposition to recover the coal from these fines before sending them to the storage area. Finally, the market and price of the finer sizes has increased, but at the same time specifications have tightened and the demand is for higher grade products. During the past four years a great deal of publicity has been given to this new process and apparatus for treating fine sizes of ores as well as coal. Excellent discussions of the apparatus itself and the theoretical aspects of the basic operating principles involved in its operation have been presented by M. G. Driessen,1-3 M. R. Geer and H. F. Yancey,4,5 J. W. Hyer6 and more recently by D. A. Dahlstrom8 as well as others.7,9-11 In view of this, it has been decided to include in the present paper only a brief description of the cyclone separator and its operating principles. This paper deals primarily with some of the more practical commercial aspects of the process and equipment required for its operation; the variables in the operation of the cyclone, their effect and means for control; and the results obtained with a 6-in. semicommercial size separator on a variety of fine coals, bituminous and anthracite, using finely ground magnetite for the separating medium solids. A description is included of the commercial-size cyclone separator pilot plant installed by the Dutch State Mines at its Emma mine in Holland, where finely ground slate is utilized as medium solids. Field of Application: The Dutch State Mines cyclone separator operates most efficiently on ores and coal in the size range of % in. to about 48 mesh. On some types of feed, effective separation can be made on sizes as small as 100 mesh, but up to the present, this may be considered exceptional. Depending upon the type of medium used, the specific gravities of separation can be varied within wide limits, up to as high as 2.70, if magnetite is used as medium. I desire to call the attention of the Institute to a novel system of dredging which, it seems to me, may prove applicable, not only to river and harbor improvements, but also to certain varieties at 1east of alluvial and diluvial gold mining; that is, river-mining, barmining, coast-mining, and any other similar operations now carried on by means of coffer-dams or dredging machines. The simple and effective method to which I refer is the invention of General Roy Stone, formerly an officer of volunteers, and at present a civil engineer, engaged under General Newton, of the United States Engineer Corps, upon the government works in New York harbor. General Stone has been, since September, 1878, in charge of operations upon Diamond Reef. This reef, lying between Governor's Island and the Battery, is one of the most dangerous in the harbor. Its position in the highway of navigation, and the fact that it is dangerous only to vessels of considerable draught and at certain stages of the tide, combine to increase the serious nature of the disasters which it has caused. The reef consists partly of rock in place, and partly of deposits of glacial clay, boulders, and pebbles, over all of which lies, or did lie until it was removed, the ordinary silt and rubbish of the harbor. As the purpose of the present paper has nothing to do with the special dimensions and other circamstances of this particular work, I describe those features only which are connected with General Stone's ingenious device. Various attempts have been made to remove the upper portion of Diamond Reef and secure a navigable depth at low tide. Some years ago Maillefert undertook to accomplish this by firing charges of high explosives, simply laid upon the surface. He accomplished some good in the removal of projecting points and ridges; but as soon as the surface of the reef had become approximately level, his method was no longer effective. After the work had been taken up by the Engineer Corps, the well-known drilling-scow invented by General Newton was brought into action; and, SO long as holes could be bored and fired in solid rock, this process was effective enough. 3.1-1. Purpose. Development drilling is directed towards determining the grade, volume, and three-dimensional outline of a mineralized zone previously located by exploration. It is distinguished from exploration or reconnaissance drilling, which has as an objective the discovery of new mineralized areas. A development drilling and bulk sampling program should furnish the following information: 1. Geology of the mineralized zone. 2. Quantitative data on grade and tons of material within pertinent cutoff limits. 3. Physical size and shape of the deposit. Areas underlain by waste as well as ore. 4. Mineralogica1 and metallurgical characteristics of the ore. 5. I1hysical characteristics of the ore. 6. Hulk samples for metallurgical testing and grade check. 7. Data on other factors that could affect mining operations, such as ground water, ground conditions, etc. 3.1-2. Procedures. There are numerous methods and techniques that are used to acquire pertinent data on a potential ore deposit. The total cost and accuracy of a development program depends on significant evaluation of the geology, proper selection of a drilling method, thorough analysis of sample data, and accurate evaluation of all the information. Knowledge of the geology of the mineral deposit is important in planning the development testing program and in evaluating the data obtained from such a program. Exploration work usually provides some significant information on the general size, shape, thickness, grade, and geology of the deposit. In some cases no further data are needed; in many cases geological complexities suggested by the preliminary work require further geological study. Of considerable importance may be the following:

Dongying Fangyuan Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd. has developed a new technology to produce anode copper from concentrates through only two furnaces. This new technology is called the Two-Step Copper Smelting Process. This paper presents the commercial application of the Two-Step Copper Smelting Process and its operating conditions. The key features of the Fangyuan Two-Step Process are as follows: (1) feed materials, including concentrates and flux, are mixed without pretreatment and fed into the Submerged Lance Smelting (SLS) furnace; (2) high grade white metal (WM) produced by the SLS furnace is transferred via WM conduit into one of the two Submerged Lance Converting and Refining (SLCR) furnaces; and (3) the two SLCR furnaces blow alternatively to maintain continuous operation of the whole production chain. The new smelter started operation in October 2015 with a processing design capacity of 1.75 Mt/year of mixed feed and has been operating for over 30 months.
