El presente texto señala la importancia del Sink and Float como método de concentración que facilita la explotación de minas de bajas leyes anteriormente desapercibidas en la industria minera. El estudio se divide en dos partes: la primera describe las generalidades de dicho método, mientras que la segunda muestra las pruebas metalúrgicas desarrollas con minerales de las minas "Casapalea", "San Cristóbal" , "Yauricocha" y "Tajo Abierto" de la Cerro de Paseo Co., así como las de "Austria Duvaz" "Victoria" y "Germania"de la "Negociación Minera y Metalúrgica Lizandro Proaño S . A . ", y la de "Sacracancha Gale". Numerous voices are raising around the world to show how misleading and fuzzy commonly used risk assessments methods are. These criticisms come at a time when public trust in ?proponents of new projects?, operators, private or governmental, seems to have hit a low and the legal system ?targets? public officers. It is common that technical experts and the public strongly disagree in their analysis of risks. Risk definition requires the evaluation of probability and consequences and those words are oftentimes enough to stir great worry to the public. Thus it is nowadays commonly understood that ?reality? is not scientific, but resides in public opinion, hence urging technical people to communicate better, more transparently. Blatant failures on both counts have lead to the emergence of ?new myths? used to justify complacency using ?complexity? and other buzz words as an alibi. This paper (together with its companion presented elsewhere) explores how poor ?common practices? in Risk Assessment contribute to biasing project team, design teams opinions, skew decision-making process and finally misrepresent reality to the public resulting precisely in the raise of public distrust, legal implication witnessed around the world. The discussion first reviews the pitfalls of common approaches (FMEA, Probability Impact Graphs) pinpointing them as possible causes of future legal liabilities. An alarming disconnect also comes from various codes, ISO 31000 itself has this flaw, invoking the term ?acceptable?/?tolerable? without defining it or giving any guidance for its determination. Wide-spectrum public consultation could be developed to define a ?modern? social acceptability criteria helping all the stakeholders making/understanding decisions. Another alarming disconnect comes from the poor definition of consequences of mishaps and their societal ripple effects. This aspect is indeed mostly ignored in codes, leaving ample room to biases and censoring applied to potential losses. In our society no one seems to have anymore the possibility of hiding behind a shroud of ?carefully maintained? misrepresentation. It is time to act and ?write the book? for proper risk assessments avoiding misrepresentations.

MINE models have three distinct uses: 1. As exhibits in expositions and museums. 2. As exhibits in law suits. 3. As illustrations in teaching mining engineering. All three uses are in a sense educational. The third, or distinctively teaching function, has not been extensively developed in America as it has been abroad, chiefly because of the cost of the models and the scarcity of model makers. In connection with expositions, such as the Columbian, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Panama-Pacific, a number of very good mine and metallurgical models were prepared with funds furnished by State commissions, by mining organizations or mining companies. At the close of these, expositions, some of these models have been deposited in National or State museums or in educational institutions, but too many of them have been lost, or have been stored, away in some mining company's office or in the basement of some State building, where they have been lost sight of and have gradually fallen to pieces. A visitor to a German mining school is impressed by two facts: 1. The mining laboratories are in general inferior to those in America. 2. The mining museums are infinitely superior -to ours, particularly in models exhibited. One may reply to this comparison by saying that a museum is necessarily a work of time. From the historical standpoint this is, of course, true, but it is not necessarily true in connection with a working museum intended to illustrate current practice. For instance, the oldest mining school in Germany, that at Freiberg, has much excellent historical material, but very little on modern practice, while Berlin, one of the youngest German mining schools, has a most extensive and valuable collection of modern appliances and models. This is true in spite of the fact that one of the best-known model shops is at Freiberg, from which many of, the models to be seen in America have come. Most stone mines are limestone mines, but a substantial minority are marble, sandstone, and granite mines. These mines differ from most others in that entry widths are 30 ft or more and entry heights are 25 ft or more. Such mines, developed with room-and-pillar methods, have large open areas that can make ventilation and dust control more difficult. Because of the difficulty of ventilating stone mines, improved ventilation is a major focal point of this chapter. However, the chapter also covers the control of dust from drills, blasting, and crushers. Another part of the chapter covers enclosed cabs, an effective dust control technique for some workers. BACKGROUND The major dust compliance problem in stone mines is caused by silica (quartz) in the rock. Mines in high-silica rock, 8% or more, are far more likely to have a dust problem than those where there is less silica. Geographically, the limestone in the Northeastern and South Central United States has higher silica than the rest of the country. Chekan and Colinet [2002] have analyzed Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) dust sampling results [MSHA 2001] from the stone industry. They have concluded that, on average across the United States, the workers exposed to the highest dust concentrations are rotary drill operators, front-end loader operators, truck drivers, and crusher operators. However, there are many regional differences. Also, occupations that work outside of cabs, such as blasters, roof bolters, and laborers, can be exposed to high dust levels.

"Exploration drill core provides for a number of standard measurements essential for determining the viability of a new mine or the extension of an existing one. Rock lithology and alteration can be visually determined and grade measured from the half core. Geotechnical parameters such as rock strength and structure can also be measured. Using suitable proxies, these metrics can then be used to estimate run-of-mine (ROM) particle size. In combination with comminution test results, these can subsequently be used to design comminution circuit configurations and estimate their performance.The Frieda River Project drill core for the large Horse-Ivaal-Trukai copper-gold porphyry deposit was unusual due to a late stage gypsum-anhydrite stockwork event that overprinted much of the deposit. Above the base of the oxidised zone, which closely matches the water table, gypsum and anhydrite has been leached out, effectively removing the glue holding the rock mass together. As a result, much of the rock above this gypsum-anhydrite surface is fragmented and gravel-like in texture, while the material below this horizon is typically uniform and competent.Large volumes of the orebody above the gypsum-anhydrite surface are expected to need minimal or no blasting for efficient excavation. In addition, the fragmented nature of much of the material was expected to reduce comminution specific energy as it already appears as though it has been crushed. While this was expected to have positive impacts to the operation, the lack of standard geological logging methods available to accurately define the degree of in situ fragmentation led to difficulty in gaining certainty over the ROM product and grinding circuit feed size distributions.Using the extensive library of core photos for the project, a novel method using image analysis techniques to take both the intact core and gravel into account to predict ROM fragmentation was developed. In addition, existing point load test data was used to infer the strength of the rock and its impact on the blasting, crushing and grinding processes. The novel approach allowed development of ROM size distribution data and improved certainty in the results of comminution circuit designs.This paper describes the methodology undertaken in detail, and discusses the results obtained.CITATION:Bennett, D and La Rosa, D, 2016. The ore treatment expansion programme at Mount Isa Mines required the erection of a new lead-zinc concentrator to be known as No. 2 Concentrator. This concentrator was designed by Western-Knapp Engineering Company in conjunction with staff of Mount Isa Mines Limited. Metallurgical design followed conventional wet milling practice, but the size of many plant units is larger than previously used at Mount Isa. The. total capacity of the new plant is 150,000 tons per four weekly period, and the plant is designed to operate in two equal parallel sections.Erection was contracted on a turnkey basis, and the plant was commissioned as a production unit on 23rd June 1966.The existing concentrator, No. I, was converted to treat all copper ore, and the total capacity of the two plants is now 390,000 tons per four weekly period.

The cooling water system for the Seabrook Nuclear Station involves 10.25 Km (33,623 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) OD hard rock tunnels, over one third of which is under and terminating over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The major excavation is accomplished by two TBM's concurrently driving the intake and discharge tunnels which by mid-January, 1981, completed 92% of the excavation. This paper presents the case history of the excavation work and describes a computer program developed to evaluate major activities of TBM excavation on a shift-by-shift basis. Details and summaries of the production efforts are computer plotted in different forms to facilitate the evaluation of production performance, trouble spots and trends.

"We report that two different micropolystyrene round beads linked to either luminol or lucigenin have been developed. The 1-µ.m-diameter beads arc useful reagents that allow one to perform chemiluminescent (light producing) phagoeytic reactions without opsonization. It is known that luminol reacts with peroxidases (e.g., myeloperoxidase) while lucigenin reacts mainly with superoxide anion. Luminol and lucigenin beads produce cellular chemiluminescence (CL) with neutrophils, macrophages, monocytes, and differentiated human promyelocytic leukemic cells (HL60). When myeloperoxidase (MPO) is present luminol beads evoke higher CL from neutrophils, but when little or no MPO is present, lucigenin beads produce higher amounts of light. Lucigenin beads appear to be active inside these cells where unbound lucigenin does not enter freely.INTRODUCTIONA variety of cells, e.g., neutrophils (Ns) and macrophages (Ms), can engulf foreign particles (1). This engulfing or phagocytic activity is used by the body to kill bacteria and to eliminate foreign particles such as respirable dusts, e.g., coal, silica, or cotton. The neutrophil engulfs or phagocytizes bacteria which are coated with plasma antibodies and/or complement proteins (Fig. 1). The coating or opsonization allows the neutrophil to recognize foreign substances. Usually the absence of opsonization prevents the cell's recognition of a foreign particle and the particle is not phagocytized. Macrophages, particularly the alveolar Oung) cells, do not require opsonization for phagocytosis. Ms should not be selective toward individual dusts because they serve a major role in eliminating a variety of these.Particle size can also be a factor. Usually a particle with a diameter of 0.5-5 µ.m is considered in the respirable range. Larger particles are trapped before they reach the alveoli Oung spaces where oxygen exchange with blood occurs), ·and smaller particles do not generally settle, and are not engulfed by macrophages (2). Tabato and Ikada (3) found that maximal phagocytosis of microspheres takes place when their diameter is in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 µ.m. In addition, they found that beads with hydrophobic surfaces were more readily phagocytized than hydrophilic surfaces."

This report contains heat-content values for hexagonal crystalline germanium dioxide between 298.15° and 1,350° K., and for germanium dioxide glass between 298.15° and 1,800° K. experimentally determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines. No similar data for these substances are to be found in the literature. The heat-content and corresponding entropy-increment data are presented both in tabular form and by equations. Free energy of formation values are estimated for germanium dioxide glass at 298.15° and 1,800° K.

Optimum autoclaving conditions were determined for separation of iron and manganese values from pregnant leach liquor produced in extracting manganese from low-grade umber are. The umber was leached with a synthetic anolyte similar to a recycle solution, used in manganese electrolysis cell operations, that had been renewed with ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid. The equipment used and results obtained are presented for the several conditions employed. The kinetics of the separation were studied. Rate equations were derived for the formation of solid ammonium-manganese sulfate, (NH4)2 Mn2 (S04)3.

Metal separations based on the selective precipitation of phosphates have a potential application in many hydrometallurgical processes. This paper reviews the literature on the solubility of a number of both divalent and trivalent metal phosphates and presents the result of some additional experimental measurements. The systems examined have been modelled to obtain free energy of formation data for the various species. Computer generated solubility diagrams which are described can be useful in predicting a variety of metal separations.

The LiFe1-xNixPO4(x=0, 0.05, 0.10) cathode materials for Li-ion battery were synthesized with Fe1xNixC2O4?2H2O(x=0, 0.05, 0.10) as Fe sources by high temperature solid-state reaction method. The Fe1xNixC2O4?2H2O(x=0, 0.05, 0.10) materials were produced by liquid co-precipitation method and crystal structure and morphology of cathode materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The composition contents and charge-discharge performances were measured by chemistry analysis and charge-discharge apparatus. The XRD patterns showed that LiFe1-xNixPO4(x=0, 0.05, 0.10) cathode material samples were well-crystallized homogeneous olivine-type phase, with only tiny trivalent iron impurities according to chemistry analysis results. Charge-discharge test showed that cathode materials possessed excellent charge/discharge capacities, about 150mAh/g at 0.1C rate and more than 120mAh/g at 0.4C rate. The polarization of cathode in charge-discharge process can be restrained effectively, for the potential offset between oxidative peak and reductive peak of doped LiFePO4 material was only 0.079V, lower than pure LiFePO4 markedly.

The use of chemical additives on grinding is of significant importance considering the high energy consumption of grinding processes. My research indicates that the dispersant approach explains the effects, in this particular case of wet grinding. Further, the dispersant approach combined with torque measurements give the possibility of clarifying the mechanisms involved when using grinding aids. I find the conclusions derived from the data obtained to be correct and useful for grinding. In general, I agree with the explanations. However, I would like to discuss several additional points that I consider to be important, and in the same time to mention some of my own results from investigations similar to those presented in the study under discussion. The "bed volume concept" and the change of slurry viscosity explain adequately the data plotted on [fig. 3], in conjunction with [Figs. 1 and 2]. However, the significant increase of the average torque in the case of 83% solid with XFS-4272 introduces the necessity of establishing the optimum of percent solid when dispersant is used. For example, the optimum percent of solid for different materials varies. One of the reasons is the material's mass density. On the other hand, it is necessary to determine the concentration of the chemical used. Because of this, it would be interesting to know how the cited concentration was selected.

In this paper, the application of the metallurgical residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts leaching process is studied in the area of wastewater treatment. The modification of the sulfuric acid leached residue and the adsorption behavior behaviour of heavy metal ions such as (Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II), As(III)) in the waste-water on the surface of the residue are investigated. The rate of adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions in the wastewater on the modified sulfuric acid leached residue is investigated. It is showed that when the initial pH value of wastewater containing heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and As(III) range from 1.4 to 1.9, with the use of the modified leached residue, As(III) ion can be selectively separated from wastewater, and the separation efficiency can reach 90%~100%. The adsorption efficiency is affected by pH, reaction time, amount of adsorbent and the initial concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The results showed that the optimum pH was natural pH value and the absorption equilibrium time was 2 hours. The adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions increases with the addition of adsorbent and de- creases with the increase of the initial concentrations of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The heavy metal ions polluted wastewater, of which concentration is about 22.5~793.6 mg/L, can meet the national disposal standard for industrial wastewaters in China very well, after 2 hours treated by 3.75~7.50 g/L modified adsorbent at room temperature. Standard methods were used to investaged investigate the absorption behaviour between abosorbentabsorbent and metal ions in the wastewater. It is concluded that the adsorption behaviour of Co(II), Mn(II) and As(III) ion fits Freundlich iso-therm, while the adsorption behaviour of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions fits Langmuir isotherm, and the saturated adsorption amount of the modified adsorbent is about 54.0~336.7mg metal/g?adsorbentabsorbent. It is suggested that the modified sulfuric acid leached residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts is environmentally attractive and meaningful as absorbent used in heavy metal ions polluted wastewater.

OIL FLOTATION DISCUSSED BY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SECTION . A meeting of the Section was held in the home of R. H. Norton, 335 W. 27th Street, on Mar. 10, thirty-two members and five guests being present. Vice-chairman Staunton opened the meeting with a description of an experiment he made with oil flotation, and then introduced the guest and speaker of the evening, L. C. Penhoel, of the South-western Engineering Co., who gave a very interesting and informal talk on the subject of Flotation. During the talk, as points were raised, there was a general discussion, in which valuable information was brought out. A number of examples of successful competitive, results by cyanidation and flotation in large milling plants in this country and Mexico were cited and discussed. The latter part of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of the bill introduced in the California State Senate, to license and register engineers. Mr. Ernest Strout gave a most favorable opinion of the principal of licensing mining engineers from his extensive experience in the working out of such a law on the Rand. All members who spoke were opposed to this bill as drafted but felt that the subject was of too great importance to the profession to attempt to amend the present bill in the week or two that remains, and that the passage of a bill that was so crude and inefficient for the achievement of the results desired, would harm the engineering profession. After the meeting adjourned a short time was spent in social intercourse, during which light refreshments were served. The appreciation and thanks of the Section is extended to Mr. and Mrs. R. H. A new simple correlation has been developed to evaluate the performance of classifiers. The new correlation has been tested on existing data from 150 different hydro-cyclone classification tests. It is shown that this model provides a meaningful improved method of mathematically describing the classification process.
