A new methodology of an experimental-analytical approach has been developed. It is used in building an information geomechanic monitoring system for the modeling of geomechanic processes during coal seam working. The approach synthesizes experimental (in-situ) measurements of rock pressure manifestation in separate points, methods of numerical modeling of processes on rock boundaries with coal, and a seam analytical calculation of rock mass in a spatial strained state. One of the realizations of this approach is the developed theory and calculation method of adjoining rock surface shift (overhang) formation during underground working of sheet deposits and of rock mass geomechanic state determination. There are description algorithms of cavity configurations with broken lengths of faces during underground working of useful mineral sheet deposits. These algorithms have been used in computer modeling of formations of adjoining rock surface overhangs and abutment pressure upon rock mass in the area of coal faces with irrectilinear longwalls. Peculiarities of surfaces shifts and stress allocation are established for different face schemes. The use of theory and methods alloww working out techniques of automatic control to receive processing algorithms of RPM measurement results and calculate geomechanic situations within panels in the process of planning and development as well as during mining, i.e., to carry out long-term prediction, in-line control, and short-term prediction of rock pressure manifestations.

Tungsten carbide scrap (WC–Co) is material generated from the tungsten carbide manufacturing process and worn out or used carbide parts from industry. Tungsten (W) ores contain about 3 wt% WO3 and their W concentrates about 10– 75 wt% WO3. Tungsten carbide scrap typically contains 40–95 wt% W. The high intrinsic value of W and the fact that the least valuable scrap contains more W than the average tungsten ore makes tungsten carbide scrap a worthy material for re-use. This study has investigated the selective dissolution of the cobalt (Co) binder phase, and recovery of tungsten monocarbide (WC) and Co using an acid leach process. The Co component was selectively leached leaving the WC solid particles intact. Further investigation using a complexing agent-aided acid leach process that takes advantage of organic chelating agents that form a soluble tungsten complex in place of the passive insoluble tungsten oxide is envisaged. The optimal dissolution of the Co binder phase using an inorganic acid in conjunction with an organic complexing agent is a novel approach with the potential of reduced leaching times and possibility of regenerating the unreacted organic acid.

O compósito metal-cerâmico Al2O3 – Cu alia as propriedades de baixa densidade, alta resistência ao desgaste, dureza e biocompatibilidade da fase cerâmica alumina a excelente condutividade elétrica, e alta tenacidade do cobre metálico. Tal compósito pode ser aplicado como ferramenta de corte, entre outras. Este trabalho discute a influência da moagem de alta energia na microestrutura e densificação do compósito Al2O3–Cu. Pós de Al2O3 e Cu na razão de 5% em massa de Cu foram moídos por até 100 horas em moinho planetário de alta energia. A razão em massa de pó para bola usada foi de 1:5. O álcool etílico foi usado como solvente. Na moagem, amostras de pós foram colhidas após 2, 10, e 50 horas. Pós moídos foram prensados uniaxialmente em matriz cilíndrica a 100 MPa e sinterizados a 1.300°C por 1 hora sob atmosfera de Ar e H2. A taxa de aquecimento foi de 10°C/min. Análises de DRX, AG caracterizaram os pós moídos. O MEV e o EDS foi empregado para observar a microestrutura das partículas dos pós moídos e dos corpos sinterizados. Um pequeno tamanho de partícula da fase cerâmica e uma estrutura mais homogênea são produzidos quando os pós foram moídos até 100 horas.

This report describes the tri-n-butyl phosphate extraction of cerium (IV) from a sulfate leach liquor prepared from a bastnaesite concentrate as well as from pure eerie nitrate solutions. The work was done on a laboratory scale using separatory funnels. Extraction from pure cerium solutions entailed no great difficulties; however, extraction from the bastnaesite solution proved more difficult, mainly because of the inhibiting effect of the sulfate ion. Despite this, procedures were developed for obtaining good single-state cerium extraction (95+ percent) and a high-purity product (99+ percent), although the maximization of both cannot be achieved simultaneously. This necessitates a compromise in any extraction scheme.

The effect of particle size on the flotation of coarse particles is analyzed. It is concluded that turbulence and the presence of the froth layer are detrimental to the recovery of coarse particles during conventional flotation. A counter-current column cell is proposed to avoid these two factors. In this column, a net upwards flow of water is prevalent, such that no froth is allowed to form on the top. Also, the levitation of heavy bubble-particle aggregates is helped by the ascending water current. Preliminary work at laboratory level with kilogram-size samples indicated that under similar conditions recoveries in the column were much higher than in conventional cells. Flotation results obtained with coarsely sized phosphate and quartz samples are presented. One interesting feature of this type of column is very fast flotation kinetics. Thus, a short column (only 55-cm collection zone) yielded, full recovery of floatable values.

In response to Dr. Ledoux's paper, a large number of metallurgical establishments and individual assayers expressed their willingness to co-operate in the plan he proposed. The necessary samples were prepared as follows : Matte.—A car-load of matte was put through a Blake crusher, then automatically subdivided into tenths by a Taylor and Brunton sampler, and one-tenth passed through Cornish rolls and through a 12-mesh screen. This was again subdivided by an automatic sampler into tenths, and a final tenth, representing 1 per cent. of the original lot, was finished by hand-sampling on an iron floor until 100 pounds remained. This was pulverized to pass a 40-mesh screen and then thoroughly mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant for distribution to the parties co-operating. Copper Borings.—These were taken from a lot of anodes, the dip-samples from several batches having been united, remelted and cast into a plate, which was proved by assay to be of uniform quality in its different parts. Borings from this plate were intimately mixed and divided in the presence of my assistant. Samples were sent out November 1,1894, with the following letter: New York City, November 1, 1894. Samples of matte and copper (about I pound each) carefully prepared in the presence of my assistant and sealed with his seal as below, are sent you by express for assay and report according to the plan of Dr. Ledoux. INTRODUCTION Every day mine management and mining personnel face the threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. After conducting numerous informal evaluations or audits at different mine sites throughout West Virginia (as well as other states), the authors concluded that many mining operations are not prepared to handle a fire situation. The results of the audits indicate that while most mines are in compliance with federal and state legal regulations regarding levels of emergency equipment, water systems and training sessions, these levels - particularly in the area of fire training - are probably not sufficient to enable the mine employees to effectively combat a fire in its early stage. This paper will present the authors' recommendations for designing and maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness Program and an overview of the curriculum of the mine fire training Program currently being conducted. MINE EMERGENCY FXEPAREDNESS PROGRAM The Mine Emergency Preparedness Pro- gram (MEPP) is a management tool developed by the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University and was designed to assist company personnel in effectively managing a mine emergency operation. The program goes beyond the traditional and required training of mine rescue teams by offering a complete emergency operations package. Included in MEPP are suggested approaches for training and organizing all personnel, ideas for developing plans of action concerning transportation, security and communications. The MEPP program may also be used as to assess present readiness levels. While the MEPP program is designed to address all types of emergency operations, the authors are convinced that emergencies involving mine fires are the ones of greatest concern and so are concentrating their efforts in that direction. Incidents where fires are involved seem to be increasing in frequency and are extremely costly to control if allowed to go beyond the incipient stages. With a proper emergency preparedness program in place and properly trained and equipped fire brigades, the authors feel that it is possible

Steel and concrete piles and power-actuated hammers have developed almost entirely within the past 100 years. Prior to that time, piles were mostly timber, driven with a drop hammer or a maul. The Engineering News Formula ? for timber piles driven with a drop hammer at a factor of safety of six ? was promulgated by Wellington in 1888. Steel com­panies supplied fabricated and rolled shapes for piles in the early 1900's. The thin shell and then uncased concrete piles originated about that time. Now leads have become sophisticated to accurately spot a pile at any required batter. Hammers have grown to phenomenal size and vibratories are being accepted at full value.

Some time ago the writer needed a cheap, light, and portable hydraulic lift or crane, that would be universal in its application, and that might .be suspended from crane-arms, overhead tramways, beams, etc., and serve all the uses of ordinary hydraulic cranes. This was accomplished by the use of a closed cylinder of wroughtiron hydraulic pipe, provided at its top with the ordinary gland and stuffing-box, through the centre of which passed another similar pipe of slightly smaller diameter, forming in effect the ordinary plunger of the regular hydraulic crane. Over the top of this centre pipe or plunger or piston a disk of iron is placed with two arms projecting several inches from the rim, as may be required. Through these arms long iron rods pass, one on each side, and are fastened in place by nuts screwed to a bearing immediately above and below the disk. These rods also pass through the enlarged head of the lift down through a casting which closes the bottom of the cylinder, which, at the same time, gives them a bearing, and they terminate at a point below the casting equal to the height of the lift of the crane. The rods at this point pass through a disk similar to the top disk and are similarly secured in place. A common hook arranged with a swivel passes through the centre of the disk, and on this hook the load is suspended. For a stationary hanging crane the apparatus is suspended by two rods passing through the head of the lift in similar manner to the two already described, at right' angles to the first, and of sufficient length to let the first set play between them and rise to the full height which the plunger will allow. The second set of rods terminates in an iron disk similar to the one at the bottom of the first set, and a hook through this in turn suspends the entire apparatus. In order to adapt the lift to an overhead tramway, single or double, in place of the suspending rods, a projection or offset is arranged on each side of the head of the lift and a journal cast in, allowing the lift to be suspended on pivots arranged as follows:

Section 56.5001 Title 30, [Code of Federal Regulations1], establishes requirements for respirable dust exposure in Metal and Nonmetal Mines based on the Threshold Limit Values (TLV's) adopted by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Respirable dust samples collected by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors at a sandstone quarry showed certain workers were exposed to excessive concentrations during development of a "coyote tunnel" that was ventilated with a blowing system. Because exhausting face ventilation systems are known to control dust more effectively than blowing face systems, a change was proposed to improve worker respirable dust exposures. This paper describes the evaluation of the proposed exhausting ventilation system in the quarry's "coyote tunnel" and compares the respirable dust exposures with those measured by the MSHA inspectors with the blowing system. Results showed the proposed exhausting ventilation system reduced respirable dust exposures to less than 20 percent of those measured by MSHA inspectors when the blowing system was used.

Detailed structural studies in southeast Arizona have successively revealed (1) the local attitudes of individual fractures (with lateral and/or vertical displacements), (2) the patterns exhibited by groups of fractures, and (3) the trends and directions shown by fracture groups or zones on a regional scale. The results of the studies have been twofold: First, domes were locally determined from these fracture arrangements, even where other criteria failed; and, second, fundamental breaks brought out the breadth of the Texas lineament in southeast Arizona as well as major northwest- and northeast-trending fracture zones. Coincidence of one or several domes with the major intersections of fundamental breaks can be centers of important mineralization, as in the instances of Bisbee, Ajo and Morenci. THE OVER-ALL STRUCTURE OF ARIZONA A northwest-southeast trending anticlinorium has been suggested as the structural setting of Arizona. Starting in Triassic and culminating in late Cretaceous times, this deformation resulted from stresses of considerable magnitude with varying ratios of com pres sional and uplifting forces. However, the series of parallel flexures could just as well have been caused by isostatic movements involving dilation under tension with only incidental compression, as later emphasized by dike filling and block faulting (Fig. 1). The anticlinorial deformation, which is also suggested by the fact that the Pre-cambrian rocks to the southwest are all concealed by sediments, could be somewhat reminiscent of the conditions that affected the classical swarm of parallel dikes of wager.' ANALYSlS OF DATA As a first step in this analysis, all structural information obtained on such features as fractures and their relative displacements, faults, dikes, anticlines, synclines, and Precambrian and Laramide-Tertiary intrusives were plotted on maps along with structural trends inferred from aerial photographic mosaics. Next, the faults in southwest Arizona were classified according to time of occurrence and relative importance. The fault assemblages were then examined as to geometric or spatial arrangement and correlated with the occurrences of domes and existing Finally, the conjunction of fracture intersections and domes was analyzed and compared with locations of known ore deposits. Differentiation of Faults According to Time and Relative Importance: The faults encountered were grouped as follows: (1) Basin and Range faults, latest in time; (2) secondary faults; (3) primary faults; and (4) lineaments, earliest in time by inference. Since 1970 Mount Isa fines Limited has made a significant increase in blister copper production from approximately 100,000 to 155,000 mt per annum and in fact 161,040 mt were produced in the calendar year 1974. Flowsheet developments including fluidised bed roasting and converter slag flotation are discussed, particularly their contributions to minimising major equipment changes in smelting and converting. The use of model- ling and simulation techniques for such an exercise is mentioned. The paper reports the alterations made to both equipment and operating techniques in the reverberatory furnace and converter sections to achieve the regular production of 250 mt of blister per converter day from a 41% Cu matte grade. The effects of flux composition on converting performance are highlighted. The air quality control programme is discussed in relation to its restriction of blister copper production.

"THERE HAS BEEN a marked growth in the petroleum industry in Canada since the end of the war. The rate of growth in the demand for oil products has exceeded that in United States, although the per capita consumption is still less. Estimates of the consumption of petroleum and petroleum products in Canada in 1951 are approximately 154,000,000 barrels, which is slightly more than 11 •barrels per capita, whereas the estimated consumption in United States for the same period, according to World Petroleum, is placed at 2,619,- 970,000 barrels. This, on the basis of a population of 154,000,000, would be equivalent to 17 barrels per capita. The increase in consumption of the petroleum and products is world wide. World production in 1951 has been estimated (Oil and Gas Journal) at 11,700,000 barrels a day or more than 41;4, billion barrels for the year. United States production increased 13.7 per cent to 6,143,000 •barrels a day and Canada'.s ,, total production increased about 65 per cent from a total of 29,091,235 •barrels in 1950 to an estimated (Dominion Bureau of Statistics) 48,096,800 barrels in 1951.The trend to use increased amounts of petroleum and petroleum products, particularly in the United States and Canada, has also been supplemented by increased use of natural gas. The rate of expansion of the consumption of natural gas in United States in the past few years has been very rapid, increasing from 2,600 billion cubic feet in 1940 to 5,975 billion in 1950, with the proven reserves in the same period increasing from 85,000 billion to 186,000 billion cubic feet."

THIS instrument, depends on the principle that, over a short period, the surfaee of a porous substance from which a liquid is evaporating receives the same amount of heat by conduction, convection, and radiation as it loses in the latent heat of the evaporating liquid. If, then, the amount of heat being received by a surface can be measured, the rate of evaporation can also be obtained. The Kata thermometer is also based on this principle differently applied.The instrument, as shown in Fig. 1, consists essentially of a thermometer with a sliding which is divided by three pointers into two equal parts which may be spaced so as to cover a distance of, for example, 5° of the thermometer scale. The instrument is calibrated so that the amount of heat required per unit area of the bulb to raise the menissus is known. The method of using the instrument is as follows:The slide is first set so that thc central pointer is at the temperature of the evaporating surface.The thermometer is cooled by any convenient means so that the meniscus is several below the lowest pointer. The thermometer is then placed near the evaporating surface, when the Ineniscus begins to rise and the time taken for it to rise from the lowest to the top pointer is measured. From this and the calibration results the amount of heat retained per unit area of the bulb at the mean temperature...

"The 13.2 m external diameter double deck Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing is one of the most challenging underwater tunnel projects in the world. Subjected to 11 bars of hydrostatic pressure, variable geology, and being in a very active seismic area, the execution of the project required innovative solutions, sophisticated construction techniques, and prudent risk management approach. The 5 km tunnel consists of 3.4 km TBM bored tunnel, 1 km twin NATM tunnels, and cut and cover sections. The project is being delivered in a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract in a public-private partnership. The technical challenges, coupled with financial and commercial risks required the implementation of sophisticated risk management tactics including the provision of Independent Design Verification. Presently, the project is in its advanced stages of construction with a recent successful TBM breakthrough on August 22nd 2015. The paper presents the technical challenges of the project from the design, construction, and risk management aspects and provides the status of the construction. PROJECT BACKGROUND The $1.245 billion Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Crossing project, dubbed the Eurasia Tunnel, is one of several major infrastructure projects being implemented in the Republic of Turkey in a public-private partnership approach. The project provides a direct and easy connection between the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul and the heart of its historical district on the European side across the Bosphorus Strait which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Upon its completion in 2017, the project will improve connections to a wide network of motorways on both sides, increase capacity across the Bosphorus by 100,000 vehicles a day, reduce congestion and save motorists an average of 45 minutes of commuting time in each direction, and bringing significant economic benefits to the city and the region; it will ease traffic across the strait, reduce congestion, decrease pollutants and emission while maintaining the historical silhouette of the city. Figure 1 provides a general view of the project location and alignment. The overall project consists of three parts totaling 14.6km. Parts 1 and 3 consist mainly of widening existing motorways, providing connections to existing roads, reconstructing local bridges and underpasses on the European and Anatolian sides respectively. Part 2 is the tunnel crossing across the Bosphorus; it is the most complex part of the project with the greatest challenges and risks. Part 2 is 5.4 km long consisting of 3.4 km of 13.2m external diameter TBM bored tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, 1-km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side, cut and cover transition boxes in the Asian and the European sides and depressed approaches on both sides. In addition, this segment includes the toll plazas, ventilation buildings, and the tunnel control and maintenance facilities."

Magnetic iron-ore is found in many localities throughout this and other countries, in large bodies and in convenient proximity to other materials required for its conversion into iron and steel; and these bodies of ore would have great commercial value on account of their nearness to consuming markets if they were generally suitable in their natural state for use in the larger operations of steel-making. In the manufacture of iron and steel it has been found, however, that not all ores are equally valuable as sources of raw material for the finished products of furnace, forge and foundry; and, as is now well understood, this is because of the intrusion, in the process of formation of the ore-bodies, of substances which can enter into deleterious combinations with the iron itself, or form compounds associated with the iron oxide which will hinder, if they do not altogether prevent, the production therefrom of the higher grades of finished metal. It is only since the development of the modern method of steel-making by the Bessemer process that the art of the chemist has been called to a critical study of the nature and effect produced by the presence of these pernicious substances in the furnace while the iron is undergoing reduction to the metallic state. Phosphorus and sulphur are the most common and obnoxious elements, and the admixture of one or the other, or both of these, in small percentages and varying proportions, will greatly modify the final results of manufacture. It so happens that generally, although not always, these hurtful elements are found in compounds in the ore which are not magnetic, and this circumstance has led to the expenditure of much ingenuity and money over a long period of time, in attempts to utilize the attractive power of magnets to separate the magnetic oxide of iron out of its crushed ores and from sands, in

"In open pit dozer bulk push operations, the material left resting against the highwall after blasting poses an issue. This is because dozers cannot physically get in behind the waste to begin the bulk pushing process. Instead, an excavator can be used to side-cast this waste for the dozers to access. An alternative technique is to have the dozers ‘side-cut’ the material, which involves the dozers running parallel to the wall, digging out the material, and eventually rotating their blades to begin bulk pushing. Industry practices suggest the latter technique is less productive and economical than using an excavator. However, such excavator sidecasting ‘economic viability’ assumes that smaller/ancillary type excavators are used (i.e. less than 23 m3 bucket capacity). So, what happens if some mine sites are restricted to using relatively larger excavators (> 23 m3 bucket) that are preferred for higher priority digging tasks? When can they avoid using their excavator? This paper explores multiple scenarios that have been designed and developed to simulate data results, which identify conditions in which the dozer side-cutting technique becomes more economically viable than excavator side-casting in terms of decreased unit cost per loose cubic metre. IntroductionOptimizing the cost of waste removal operations is important for the profitability of opencast coal mines. In the past decade, dozer bulk pushing has emerged and taken over from traditional waste removal operations such as dragline and truck-and-shovel methods at various sites around the world (Beatty, 1994). In a typical bulk push operation, once the bench has been blasted, waste is left resting against the highwall, which can either be cleared using a loading unit or by having the dozers ‘side-cut’ the highwall.Dozers perform most effectively when slot dozing side-by-side, perpendicular to the highwall. However, when dozers are required to remove material off the highwall, they must push parallel to the highwall, rather than perpendicular, hence ‘side-cutting’ the material to ensure a clean face. While dozer sidecutting is possible, it has been found that the majority of mine sites use a loading unit in this situation to avoid dozer inefficiency. Other perceived issues with dozer side-cutting include higher maintenance requirements and safety risks to dozer operators working in close proximity to the highwall."
