During slow-cooling crystallization of iron-making blast furnace slags, most rare earth elements recrystallize in an artificial "mineral" identified as calcium cerite. Scandium (Sc) and europium (Eu), however, concentrate in a sheetlike "mineral." In this investigation, the mineralogy of this sheetlike "mineral" was studied. It was identified as being in the mica group and was called a rare earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. One of the objectives of this study was the recovery of this "mineral." The study indicated that it can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation using dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecyl-ammonium acetate and sodium oleate as collectors.

Strategic alignment throughout a mining organization is critical to effective strategic execution and good business performance. The alignment of strategic goals and objectives in the different operations and functions in a large global operation is a challenge facing executive management in light of legacy organizational structure and processes. An additional confounding factor in strategic alignment of acquisition and new project expansion is that mining projects and operations are frequently multi-cultural in terms of country origin as well as organizational culture. This brings together many cultures to accomplish the project or complete an acquisition (Financial Times, 2006). The mining industry presents numerous challenges to executives and mine management by the nature of the operation and organizational processes used in running it. For example, there seems to be an inherent conflict between the individual goals of the components that constitute a mineral processing operation (the mine, the mill, the smelter and the refinery), and lowest cost production of the final product. Managers of these component operations have specific objectives passed down from the corporate executives. Those site managers tend to be compensated based on throughput and perform to this main metric. This tendency to maximize throughput for an individual operation can contradict the general process flow of a best-fit solution to producing the final product at the lowest cost. In an effort to become more aligned, firms are increasingly using balanced scorecard derivatives at great cost and effort (whether internally or externally sourced) in an attempt to help with strategic alignment. Balanced score-cards have been effective in providing a good strategic scorecard to companies with some measure of strategic alignment. Many firms make this effort of using balanced scorecards. However, most firms are not strategically aligned or, at best, are sub-optimized, in terms of strategic alignment (Kaplan and Norton, 2006). The tendency in mining operations is to focus on operating individual components as optimally as possible and stretching existing assets to the best possible production rates. ?Making tons? is the common operational focus. Numerous factors underpin this focus and can affect the ability of the operation?s ability to align properly with the corporate strategy and strategic goals. Critical factors are legacy organizational structure, culture, processes and performance measurement systems. Changing anyone of these factors to affect better strategic alignment requires significant attention to managing change.

Suppression of the explosion of the world population and the surprising increase of waste and emissions are major targets confronting mankind in this century. Recycling and waste minimisation are key words for sustainable development in a highly industrial society. The argument is really whether or not recycling done well is the solution to the environment problem for the following generation. If energy is not necessary in the recycling, all materials have to be recycled. The greatest interest among the environmental issues is the regulation of CO2 gas emission. It must be recognised that it is not possible to completely renew expended energy. Some of the recycling systems currently used are thought to increase the load on the environment rather than to be beneficial. Although metal industries have consumed tremendous amount of energy and discharged a large quantity of CO2 and solid waste, the metals have supported a high quality of life. The metal production industries such as the iron and steel industry and the non-ferrous metals industry can work well recycling of not only metals but also other materials without consuming more energy. Waste plastics, for example, are use as a reductant in a blast furnace. The role of metallurgical industry in the recycling-based society is introduced in the present paper to recognise how the metal industries can contribute recycling and waste minimisation.

A subsystem-based approach to the characteristic curves for a multiple fan ventilation system is presented. The ventilation variables and their relationships associated with a fan branch are considered as a subsystem of the multiple fan system. For each subsystem, the solution curve is generated by replacing the fan with a hypothetical pressure source or, alternatively, by adding a hypothetical pressure source without removing the fan. The projection of the solution curve onto the coordinate planes results in two classes of subsystem characteristic curves: pressure-vs.-quantity and quantity-vs.-quantity. The subsystem characteristic curves are described and illustrated through example ventilation systems. These curves are also discussed using the network equations of a general multiple-fan system.

THROUGHOUT its development the science of electronics, like so many other branches of science and industry, has been indebted to the metallurgist. Metallurgy has provided the electronic engineer with conductors to furnish passage for electrons outside of his evacuated tubes; it. has developed tungsten and tantalum wires for emitting electrons and various refractory metals and alloys suitable for electrodes, which receive them and guide them within the tube; finally it has supplied ferromagnetic materials both for shielding electronic apparatus from magnetic fields and for forming highly concentrated fields for deflecting electron. Today I hope to show you that electronics has not been altogether ungrateful for this assistance. More specifically, I wish to indicate the role that the electron microscope, a relatively recent product of electronic engineering, is playing even now in the study of metals. Every metallographer is aware that his standard metallographic microscope will not reveal structural detail involving separations smaller than a certain fraction -at the very best a tenth-of a micron. This limitation, he knows, is a consequence of the fact that the wave length of the light employed for forming the image has this order of magnitude. It is, thus, a property of all light microscopes. To overcome it, a different imaging medium must be employed. The existence of such a medium became evident when it was demonstrated' that electrons were affected by magnetic and electric fields with axial symmetry just as light is affected by glass lenses; these fields, or "electron lenses," curve the paths of electrons reaching them from an object located on the axis of symmetry in such a manner that, at some distance from the lens, a true image of the object is formed, Furthermore, although a wave length may be ascribed to electron beams just as to light, this wave length is much shorter; for electrons accelerated through a difference of potential of 50 kilovolts, the wave length is only about one hundred-thousandth of that of visible light: Actually, the electron microscopes of today resolve detail one hundred times as fine as light microscopes; if the maximum useful magnification of the latter is taken to be a thousand, that of electron microscopes is one hundred thousand. THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPE Since electrons are readily scattered and absorbed by matter, specimens to be observed in the electron microscope must be prepared to be less than one micron in thickness; furthermore, the interior of the microscope must be carefully evacuated to prevent collisions between the electrons and the molecules of the air. Finally, as already mentioned, the lenses are formed by axially symmetric magnetic or electric fields, and not by any material medium such as glass. The relations between micros tructures and critical current density in transverse magnetic field were experimentally investigated due to each transformation of the 0 to 0' + P" phases at 700' C for superconductmainly examined using replication electron microscopy. The ß' or a precipitates were found to pin down magnetic flux lines in these alloys. The effects of precipitation upon the critical current density were discussed in relation with the size, spacing, and characler of these precipitates. HIGH magnetic field superconductors, such as Nb-Zr, Nb-Ti, and Nb-Zr-Ti alloys, have been recently put to extensive practical use as winding materials for superconducting magnets.13 The critical current density of these hard superconductors under an applied magnetic field is an important characteristic for magnet materials and is very sensitive to metallurgical structure. It is generally known that the critical current density is increased by introducing dislocations and precipitates into a superconductor; that is, dislocations and precipitates are presumed to be barriers that hinder quantized flux lines from moving.4'5 Theoretical6'7 and experimental analyses of the motion of flux lines and the interaction between flux lines and various defects have already been reported by many authors. Metallographic analysis of high magnetic field superconductors such as Nb-Zr and Nb-Ti is difficult, so that no quantitative relationship between microstruc-ture and critical current density has been established yet. In this paper, the effect of precipitation on the critical current density in magnetic field was investigated for two superconducting alloys, Nb-40Zr-10Ti and Nb-5Zr-60Ti. In these alloys the resistive critical field H, at 4.2oK was about 100 kG and the critical current density Jc at 80 kG was of the order of 104 amp per sq cm.13-l5 The superconducting properties were examined in relation to the microstructural changes due to transformation of i) the ß to ß' + ß" phases at 700°C for Nb-40Zr-10Ti alloy and ii) the ß to a + ß phases at 500°C for Nb-5Zr-6OTi alloy. The effect of size, spacing, and character of precipitates on flux line pinning was in particular examined. The microstructures were studied by means of residual resistivity, microhardness, and tensile strength measurements as well as by X-ray diffraction, optical, and replication electron microscopies. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pure niobium, zirconium, and titanium, in the form of rods 0.8 cm in diam, served as raw materials. Results of chemical analyses of these rods are given in Table I. Ingots of the alloys, 0.4 cm in diam and 3 cm in length, were prepared by means of levitation melting, utilizing a copper mold in an argon-gas atmosphere. Samples from the ingot then were cold-worked by grooved mill to 0.2 cm in diam, heat-treated homogeneously (in the ß phase region) for 5 hr at 1100° in a vacuum of 1 x 106 Torr, and finally cold-drawn to 0.025 cm in diam. For heat treatments, samples were wrapped in niobium foil and sealed in an argon-gas atmosphere in fused quartz capsules. Water quenching was done after each heat treatment. Subsequently H-J, were performed at 4.2° by slowly transporting the current through the samples 4 cm long, under transverse magnetic field, until the least detectable resistive terminal voltage was observed. The resistive critical field H, was taken as the field at which 100 pv appeared at 4.2°K across a sample 3 cm in length, with a current of 5 ma. The critical temperature T, was measured by means of a conventional four-probe resistivity technique and taken as the temperature at which the sample resistance reached one-half of full restoration of the normal-state resistance with a current l ma flowing through a sample 2 cm in length. Precipitates were observed by means of optical microscopy and carbon replication electron microscopy. The etching solution consisted of 5 ml HF, 10 ml H2SO4 10 ml H2O2, and 50 ml H2O, and shadowed carbon replicas were examined in a itachi HU-11 electron microscope operated at 50 kv. Slow pyrolysis experiments were caried out on samples of coal from north em Natal having a volatile mater content ranging between 10 and 25 per cent by mass and a constant particle-size distribution. The tests were conducted at atmospheric pressure in a helium atmosphere, and ata heating rate of 10 KImin and a final temperature of 1220 K. The pyrolysis products were taken as coke and volatile mater (tar and eight other species), and tMir respective yields were measured. The experimental results were used in the modification of an existing mathematical model and in the derivation of new corelations for some of the parameters of the model, so that the volatile products of a coal can be predicted from ultimate and proximate analyses of the coal. The pyrolysis tests showed good agreement between the model predictions and the experimental results.

EARLY in 1917, the United States Coal & Coke Co. secured options on several tracts in Harlan County, Ky., aggregating about 1.9,000 acres in area, and after careful prospecting by outcrop openings and diamond drilling, completed the purchase late in July of that year. This property is situated in the eastern end of Harlan County, south of the Poor Fork f Cumberland River, and extending across Big Black Mountain to the Clover Fork of Cumberland River, a distance of about 7 mi. (11.3 kg.). It extends from the Kentucky-Virginia line westward for about 6 mi. Looney Creek, which empties into Poor Fork, crosses the property for about 4 mi. (6.4 kg.), and as several of the seams within the property outcrop along this stream, it afforded an easy, and the logical, place for development. The property is on the northern side of the geological trough formed by the uplifting of Stone Mountain, on the southern, and Pine Mountain, on the northern side; the northern boundary along Poor Fork is practically at the base of Pine Mountain. This, area has been described in various geological reports.1 The main seam on this property is the one known variously as the "C," Benham, Keokee, Taggart, and Roda; it is, also called, by the Kentucky Geological Survey, the Kellioka seam of the western portion of Harlan County. This seam averages, in this property, about 5 ft. (1.5 m.) in thickness, although local rolls reduce this thickness considerably over small areas; and at the extreme western end of the property the seam splits. Laboratory autoclaves for hydrometallurgical investigations are available in a variety of sizes, models, and materials of constructions. They vary in sizes from 25 mL to 2 liters for laboratory studies and 5 to 50 gallons for pilot plant work. They are essential tools for studying aqueous oxidation of sulfide concentrates, dissolution of oxide minerals at high temperature and pressure and hydrothermal precipitation reactions. The maximum pressure and temperature at which any pressure vessel can be used will depend upon the design of the vessel and the materials used in its construction. Since all materials lose strength at elevated temperatures, any pressure rating must be stated in terms of the temperature at which it applies. A review of existing models and their accessories will be given.

In the winter of 1895 to 1896, during the construction of the Jackson and Cincinnati railroad, running from Addison, Lenawee county, Mich., to Jackson, Mich., in a northerly direction, I had occasion to observe some interesting geological features, described below, in a cut of this railroad made through the low ridge of gravel and sand, dividing the valley of Silver Lake and Silver Creek from the Goose Lake and Goose Creek valley, in Lenawee county. The surface-deposits of this part of the county are, as is well known, of glacial origin. Gently rounded, long ridges of sand, gravel and clay intervene between the marshy bottoms and the lakes of the valleys. The nature of the deposits, varying from a sandy clay or clayey sand to fine and coarse gravel and pure siliceous sand on the one hand, and to a very tough, fine, uniform and often indurated clay on the other, as well as the irregular and sudden changes, sharply divided, between these materials composing the ridges, in the cuts made through them by the railroad, would admit of no doubt that this country owes its present surface-configuration primarily to the action of the last glacial period, which covered its surface with an immense ice-sheet. The well-known ice-markings on the huge granite, schist, greenstone and conglomerate boulders found everywhere imbedded and protruding from the surface, add their testimony to the other characteristics mentioned. Most of the cuts made by the railway through the ridges showed in a marked degree the irregular arrangement and the sudden changes of and between the materials mentioned above. Investigations were performed on fine grinding of bituminous coal in a laboratory-scale pulverizer. The results indicated that the breakage behavior at relatively coarse sizes (i.e., greater than about 20 µm) is essentially "normal." However, at fine sizes (i.e., less than about 10 m), there is clear evidence of reagglomeration. A simplified population-balance model for simultaneous growth and breakage is formulated. Breakage rates and breakage distributions were assumed to follow the patterns typically observed in simple grinding systems. It is recognized, however, that solid particles and agglomerates may exhibit different breakage behaviors. Agglomeration rates are assumed to be determined by contact probability, i.e., by the relative numbers of interacting particles. Based on comparisons between model simulations and experimental data, it appears that agglomerate rebreakage rates and fragment size distributions are quite different from those for solid particles. The result is that product size passes through a minimum and then increases with time as agglomeration begins to dominate.

Thirty binary systems of vanadium and chromium group transition elements with second and third long period transition elements were explored in regard to the intermediate phases formed. It was found that the phases predominating in these systems are s, AB type with ordered a-tungsten or C8 structure, close-packed-hexagonal with small unit cell dimensions and, finally, phases isomorphous with 1-manganese. IN recent years, considerable information has become available concerning the intermediate phases in binary systems of the transition elements. Thus, the s phase has been found to occur in most of the binary systems of vanadium, chromium, and molybdenum with the group of elements manganese, iron, cobalt, and nickel.' It was observed that, while the rr phases formed by chromium with manganese, iron, or cobalt possess a considerable temperature range of stability, particularly in the Cr-Co system, the corresponding s phases with molybdenum are limited to a temperature range of less than 400" above about 1200°C. Goldschmidt' reported v phases of tungsten with iron and cobalt, and these are apparently stable only at (and above?) 1400°C." Exploratory work in this laboratory with Fe-W and Co-W alloys of approximately 60 atomic pct W annealed at 1300°C did not produce X-ray patterns suggesting the presence of a phase. It appears then that the phases of iron and cobalt with the chromium group elements decrease in stability as the two components are chosen from long periods further removed from each other. From the available information, it might be concluded that the controlling factor is the increasing difference in atomic radii between the components. In contrast to the a phase, the phases formed by iron and cobalt with chromium group elements' are stable only when the latter have large atomic radii (molybdenum and tungsten); the corresponding phases with chromium do not occur. When the difference in atomic size becomes still larger (r,/r,, approaching the ideal value of 1.225), the u and p phases are replaced by Laves phases (AB,), as in the alloys of iron and cobalt with columbium," tantalum." and titanium."-" However, atomic size certainly cannot be the sole determining factor, since, for instance, in contrast to the very stable (Mo, Co)p phase, no such phase occurs in the Mo-Ni system even though the atomic diameters of cobalt and nickel are nearly the same. Similarly, chromium and cobalt form a a phase in a wide temperature range," but the corresponding s phase in the Cr-Ni system is missing. It has been shown that the composition of the u phase in various binary and ternary systems of transition elements in the first long period may be correlated in a fairly quantitative manner with the number of electron vacancies. The influence of electronic structure is probably present also in binary and ternary phases' and to some extent, apparently, even in Laves phases." " Although the absence of phases in the Cr-Ni and Mo-Ni systems has not as yet been explained on the basis of electronic structure, it appears reasonable to suspect a connection. One of the great difficulties in arriving at well founded rules in regard to the alloying behavior of transition elements lies in the lack of reliable information concerning the details of their electronic structure in the metallic and alloy form. The theoretical penetration of this field appears to be beset by very considerable difficulties, even when the complications due to alloy formation are disregarded. Another great source of uncertainty is the scarcity of phase diagram information even for binary systems of the transition elements so that only a very limited basis is provided for generalizations as to the occurrence of intermediate phases. For instance, very few binary phase diagrams of second and third long period transition element systems have so far been published. The present work was undertaken in order to survey the various types of intermediate phases occurring in 30 binary systems of elements of the group vanadium, columbium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten with the elements rhenium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, and platinum. For most of these binary systems phase diagrams are very incompletely or not at all known, as will be further reviewed.*

The Upper Triassic Leigh Creek Coal Measures which include a number of seams of sub-bituminous black coal are preserved in four small intramontane basins. The largest is Telford Basin, 1,000 m in thickness. The coals, of variable thickness and quality, are mined by open cast mining methods and utilised for generation of electricity at Port Augusta. The combined proven and indicated reserves are about 100 million tonnes.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents guidelines for mining near surface and underground bodies of water. The guidelines were based on information developed under contract in three phases of study, as follows: (1) Collection and documentation of data from worldwide sources; (2) application of existing guidelines, foreign, Federal, and State, to case histories of previous inundations; and (3) development of recommended guidelines for underground coal mining near bodies of water aimed at maximum efficient utilization of underground coal resources consistent with minimizing inundation hazards. While the contract guidelines were for the mining of coal seams, they may also be used for mining any tabular sedimentary mineral deposit. Tables are given for the determination of the size of coal pillars needed; for other bedded deposits, similar tables could be determined based on their strength properties.

During the year 1936, there were 654 oil wells drilled in the Texas Panhandle, with a total daily initial production of 256,049 bbl. Although 74 more wells were drilled than in the previous year, the total initial production lacked 109,303 bbl. to equal that of 1935. The explanation is that during 1935 most of the drilling was in the granite-wash area, which is much more prolific than the dolomite, in which the major development was done during 1936. Twenty-one oil wells were drilled deeper, increasing their potential 3683 bbl. The total daily oil potentid of the field Dec. 31, 1936, as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission, was 834,888 bbl., with a daily allowable production of 71,335 bbl. No overall field decline in production is recognized by the Texas Railroad Commission. A well is tested upon completion to determine its potential production. The enrichment of useful components from ores and/or wastes has become important with increasing recent worldwide resources demand and the amount of wastes generated from the urban mines, in order to establish real ?sound resource-cycle society? including the activity of resource exploitation. The first stage of the treatment in the process must be comminution and it is important to make good liberation among compositional phases in the targeted resources. Electrical disintegration (ED) is well known to make a selective breakage at phase boundary. However, the detailed mechanism of the phenomena is not clarified yet, in especial, on the influence of electrical properties of compositional materials on the liberation. This paper made a comparison between the liberation degrees of ED products and the results of electromagnetic field analysis using finite element method (FEM). In the experiments, we used several synthetic cement paste based samples in which mineral particles were dispersed to apply the ED, and in the electromagnetic field analysis, we calculated the charge density accumulated and the Maxwell stress at phase boundary. It was found, for highly insulating mineral samples, that higher breakdown voltage was necessary because electric charge was not easily accumulated at phase boundary but that higher liberation degree was obtained after the breakdown (ED). It was also found the tendency that higher liberation was observed for the samples which had higher maximum Maxwell stress calculated by the electromagnetic field analysis. From the results, the electrical charge and Maxwell stress induced at phase boundary could be driving forces of selective breakage. In addition, we also applied the ED to the printed circuit boards (PCBs) in order to concentrate miner rare metals, which were essential for producing electronic devices. It could be demonstrated that the devices installed on the PCB were easily detached from the board and that most of metal elements in the devices was exposed and liberated from the insulating plastic covers, which were broken in the ED, then, it is considered that the subsequent solid phase separation could be effective for concentrating such metal elements. The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. 'normal' coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense 'bread-crusted' clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.
