Lithium-bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias, Brazil, were investigated to determine whether there is a correlution between the lithium content of the mineral and the color of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high-grade lithium ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tour-maline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but that the color of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink color of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely due to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black color of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepidolites appear to be lithium- rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or Fe3+.

Many of the gold deposits in the Timmins• area show a close spatial association to ultramafic metavolcanics. Available analytical data suggest that ultramafic rocks contain significantly higher gold contents than other major rock types. In addition, recent analyses by Keays (1975) suggest that talc-carbonate alteration of ultramafic rocks releases significant quantities of gold. It is proposed that the ultramafic volcanics formed the principal source of gold for the deposits in Timmins, and that the gold was derived from the ultramafic flows when they were extensively carbonatized. Carbonatization of the ultramafic rocks and emplacement of the auriferous quartz-carbonate veins was probably coincident with the last major period of deformation in the gold camp. Delineation of hitherto unrecognized ultramafic volcanics could be an important guide to the discovery of further gold deposits.

A new method of satellite imagery analysis has been developed during underground mine roof research. Landsat positive film transparencies were projected onto topographic base maps to scale and lineaments enhanced with a Ronchi grating (method A). Thirty-five millimeter slides of video-enhanced scenes were also projected onto base maps (method B). Both methods permit direct plotting of lineaments to scale and direct correlation with surface and subsurface data wing transparent overlays.

The kinetics of re crystallization were determined metallographically for a 3-1/4 pcl Si-Fe rapidly compressed at temperatures of 710° to 911°C, and held for various times at the working temperature. As in re crystallization following cold wwk, the time for re crystallization was reduced by increased temperature and strain. Nucleation occurred chiefly at grain edges, although other pre-existing interfaces, notably inclusions, also served as nucleation sites. The importance of intragranular nucleation to grain refinement in hot working is pointed out, together with some possible techniques by which nucleation might be induced within the grains. The observed isothermal growth rates are quite accurately described by the equation G = 4 x 10-'/t (cm per sec), independent of temperature and strain at all but the shortest times. Changes in G during recrystalliza-tion can exceed two orders of magnitude. It is argued that release of stored energy associated with lattice defects cannot adequately explain the time dependence. A suggested alternative involves processes of solute segregation and desegregation in the unrecrystallized matrix and at the moving boundary, respectively. EFFORTS to improve hot-working practice are hampered by an incomplete understanding of the fundamental metallurgy involved. Research directed at establishing the required basic foundation falls into two categories, the first concerned with measurement of mechanical properties under the conditions of high temperature and strain rate which characterize such processing, the second focused on structure and its relation to the deformation conditions. Rossard,' Rossard and Blain,2 and Hardwick and Tegart have conducted many high-speed, high-temperature torsion tests on various metals. One of their objectives was interpretation of stress-strain curves in terms of the structures of specimens rapidly quenched following interruption of twisting. They showed that appreciable hardening occurred in the early part of the test, and that this hardening reflected the concurrent development of an increasingly dense substructure within the grains. The detailed nature of this substructure was observed to depend on the ease of polygonization which, at least in fcc metals, varies with the stacking-fault energy.= By holding specimens after interruption but before quenching, the nucleation and growth of new grains could also be studied. Some success has been realized in relating the microstructure of hot-rolled steel to its temperature:strain rate:strain history with such testing.' The same general observations have been made by others investigating rolling4f5 and drop-hammer forging.~-~ Incident to these experiments, some efforts were made to determine the kinetics of re-crystallization as well as the velocity of the migrating boundaries. The results have been largely qualitative, owing to difficulties of interpreting hardness measurements5 and microstructures. The work described here was undertaken to obtain more quantitative information from tests on a material having suitable metallographic properties, and, in this way, to provide further insight into the fundamentals of this practically most important kind of deformation processing. I) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Materials. Electrolytic etching of a Si-Fe alloy reveals dislocations and substructure in unrecrystallized grains.8'9 This unique characteristic makes possible a precise determination of the extent of recrystallization. For that reason, it was the material selected for all experiments in the present work. The two particular alloys that were used are identified in Table I. A major difference between "A" and "B" is the number of inclusions, as noted in the table. Most of the experiments were made with material "A". It was received as hot-rolled plate 1 in. thick, sawed to 2-in. widths, hot-forged at 1200°C to 5/8-in. rounds, and finally annealed in a mechanical vacuum at 1000°C for 24 hr. The result was substructure-free grains of mean diameter 0.05 cm.*

TREATMENT of the breaker wash-water discharges to remove the suspended particles of finely divided material is usually most efficiently and economically accomplished in settling or thickening tanks. The purpose of these tanks is to separate the excess water from the solids by sedimentation whereby the solid particles suspended in the water are thickened by the force of gravity. The water overflowing these tanks is either reused for coal cleaning or discharged directly to the streams. The settled solids, which are in a relatively concentrated condition, forming a sludge or thick pulp, can be disposed of by pumping to a storage dam, by slushing into mine workings, by processing for recovery of coal, or filtering by vacuum or centrifugal means and discharging with the breaker refuse. The scope of this paper will be limited to the discussion of settling and thickening equipment, the factors that influence the settlement of solids, and a brief description of tests that can be made to determine the size of settling facilities required for any particular condition. The practical application of sedimentation to the treatment of coal falls into two groups, one of classification or hydro- separation, and the other of clarification and thickening. Classification may be employed to prepare a relatively low- grade fuel, which can be used as is or can be further processed separately. Clarification and thickening is employed where the primary objective is to recover a relatively dewatered solid and return a satisfactorily clear water to breaker or streams. When a stream of water flows across a tank, the time required for a particle to travel from the feed inlet to the overflow must be a little greater than that required for the finest particles or flocs in the feed to settle out of the stream. OPERATION AND TYPES OF SETTLING EQUIPMENT Theoretically, the liquid in a settling tank should rise at a more or less constant rate throughout the area of the tank Under these conditions the rising velocity of the water must be less than the settling rate of the finest particles if clarification is to be obtained. When classification of particles is to be made in the tank, the overflow velocity must be greater than the settling velocity of the particles that are to be removed with the tank overflow. The performance of a settling tank, then, depends on the settling rate of the solids and the current velocities in the tank. The oldest types of sedimentation employ intermittent types of settling tanks of any convenient shape. Means are provided for filling the tank with pulp and allowing it to settle until quiet, for moving the clean liquor and for removing the thickened sludge. The operation is necessarily intermittent but a sufficient number of tanks is employed so that a continuous flow of clear water is maintained. ABSTRACT: When considering the rock stress component of rock mechanics design, the basic procedure is to consider the pre-existing stress-state in the rock mass and then estimate the disturbance to this stress state as a result of engineering excavation. Failure criteria are applied to the final stress state to establish whether failure will occur. However, during the evolution of the stress state, the failure locus may be reached before the anticipated failure state and, in this case, failure will occur unexpectedly. This indicates that the complete stress path (defined as the variations in magnitudes and orientations of the stress tensor components resulting from engineering-induced or natural changes) must be considered. We list a set of stress path principles with their corollaries and then introduce a new and powerful method for simultaneously illustrating changes in the six independent components of the stress tensor. This method plots the magnitudes of the principal stresses above their orientational paths on the hemispherical projection, to provide a three-dimensional stress path locus for each of the three principal stress components. In connection with this presentational device, we illustrate a number of concepts associated with the stress path in rock engineering. For example, we show how the minor principal stress approaches zero at an unsupported excavation face, the interchange of the trajectories of two principal stresses when their magnitudes become equal, and the influence of the bounds on the principal stresses given by strength criteria. RESUME: Si on s’interesse à la composante “contrainte” lors d’un dimensionnement en mécanique des roches, la méthode de base consiste à considérer l’état de contrainte pré-existant dans le massif rocheux, puis d’estimer la perturbation à cet état générée par l’excavation projetée. Des critères de rupture sont appliqués à l’état de contrainte final pour établir si une rupture va se produire. Cependant, lors de l’évolution de l’état de contrainte, la surface critique peut être atteinte ce qui provoquera une rupture anticipée et, dans ce cas, cette dernière sera inattendue. Cela indique que le chemin de contrainte complet (défini par les variations de l’intensité et de l’orientation des composantes du tenseur des contraintes liées à des causes anthropiques ou naturelles) doit être pris en compte. Nous présentons un ensemble de règles pour les chemins de contraintes ainsi que leurs corollaires et, ensuite, nous introduisons une méthode, nouvelle et puissante, pour présenter simultannement les changements des six composantes du tenseur des contraintes. Cette méthode consiste à tracer l’intensité des contraintes principales sur le chemin d’orientation des contraintes à l’aide d’une projection hémisphérique afin d’obtenir le lieu, en trois dimensions, de chaque contrainte principale. En relation avec cet outil de représentation, nous illustrons certains concepts associés au chemin de contrainte en ingénierie au rocher. Par exemple, nous montrons comment la contrainte mineure tend vers zero à la surface d’une excavation sans soutenement, le changement de direction des deux contraintes principales quand leur intensité deviennent égales, et l’influence des conditions aux limites sur les contraintes fournies par un critère de rupture. Kriterien fuer das Versagen werden im letzten Stadium, des Stress Zustandes angewendet, um zu erfahren ob ein Versagen wohl eintreten wird. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass waehrend des Stress Aufbaus ein oertliches Versagen eintreten kann, welches vor dem eigentlichen, erwarteten Versagens Zustand auftritt. Diese Moeglichkeit weist darauf hin, dass der gesammte “Stress Path” (definiert durch die Variationen der Stress Tensor Komponenten in Richtung und Groesse, hervorgerufen durch ingenieurmaessig hervorgerufene oder natuerlich Vorgaenge) betrachtet werden muss. Wir fuehren eine Liste der “Stress Path” Prinzipien auf und stellen dann eine neue und wirksame Methode zur gleichzeitigen Darstellung der sechs unabhaegigen Komponenten des Stress Tensors vor. Diese Methode stellt die Groesse der “Principal Stresses” in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem rauemlichen Weg auf einer hemispherischen Projektion dar und erlaubt hiermit eine drei dimensionale Darstellung fuer jeden Ort des “Stress Path’s” in die drei Haupt Stress Komponenten. Im Zusammenhang mit der hier gegebenen Darstellungsart, verdeutlichen wir eine Reihe von Konzepten in der Felsmechanik. "Pseudo-potential fully relaxed total energy calculations are used to predict a hypothetical Si1-xCxO2 (x<0.5) compound formed from SiO2 ß -cristobalite by substitution of some SiO2 complexes by CO2 molecules. The simulation shows that the Si1-xCxO2 compound can be quasi stable if the CO2 content is less than fifty per cent. It is assumed that six-molecule Si6-nCnO12 (n=3) rings can play a role of nucleuses for formation of the Si1-xCxO2 compound from SiO2 and CO2 molecules. Thus, silicon dioxide can be considered as a possible solid store for gaseous CO2.IntroductionThe problem of increasing of CO2 in the Earth atmosphere is one of the main modern problems of mankind. One of conceivable ways to decrease the harmful value of CO2 is to convert a part of it to solid state. Iota et al. [1] reported a polymeric (quartz-like) phase of CO2 solid synthesized at high pressure (~40 GPa) and at high temperature (~1800 K). Shortly after this experimental work, Serra et al. [2] reported a total energy calculation of several possible phases of CO2 using plane wave pseudo-potential density functional theory. They concluded that there should be a transition from a molecular phase to a phase isostructural to SiO2 -quartz in the range of 35 to 60 GPa. The latest calculations by Dong et al. [3] have shown that the more favored solid CO2 phase is ß -cristobalite. Recently, Kume et al. [4] have demonstrated the polymerization of CO2 even at room temperature at high pressures up to 80 GPa. Transformations of gaseous CO2 to different solid phases were studied recently experimentally and theoretically [5-8]. The main obstacle for using synthesized CO2 solid as a solution for the CO2 problem is its pressure instability. However the SiO2 ß -cristobalite with the same structure is stable.The question is whether a silicon-oxide system in which a part of atoms of silicon is replaced by atoms of carbon will be stable? If the answer is positive, this system can be considered, in our opinion, as a possible store for CO2."

But while the bull is leading the way on the production side of the nuclear fuel cycle, there is reason for caution from the end-users&apos; viewpoint. How fast will electrical demand grow in the years to come, and what portion of that will nuclear generators supply? How do utilities play their cards when the government holds two of the largest jokers in the deck-a policy on spent fuel reprocessing and a timetable for the fast breeder reactor? Is there a shortfall in domestic uranium supplies on the horizon?

"In mineral comminution circuits, the feed to hydrocyclone consists of a heterogeneous mixture having varied degrees of liberation and sizes leading to the multi-component particle system. The presence of multicomponent particles exhibits a significant change in the classification performance parameters. In this work, a numerical study is conducted with an artificial mixture of magnetite and silica of different proportions having similar particle size distribution to understand the multicomponent interaction in a laboratory scale hydrocyclone. The heterogeneous feed is injected tangentially would attain different settling rates under the influence of centrifugal, drag and turbulent dispersion forces. In this work, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to resolve the continuous phase turbulence. Modified Algebraic Slip Mixture (ASM) model using the corrected Newtonian rheology of fines to simulate multi-density and multi-size particles of the mixture in a hydrocyclone. The influence of the multi-component particles on classification performance is extracted from the simulation in terms of the performance curve, i.e. recovery to underflow, volume fraction distribution and the key forces acting on each particle in the mixture. An interaction was observed between different components during the classification process, featuring accumulation of heavier particle at wall-side pushing the lighter particles into the inner locus of zero vertical velocity (LZVV) zone. The comparison of separation factors of different size particles presented the higher probability of the magnetite of same size reporting to wall region and hence to underflow. Hence, an increased component cut-size with the increased magnetite proportion, particularly a profound effect on lighter density component’s cut-size was observed. INTRODUCTION The multicomponent existence is found in naturally occurring ores, affecting the pure metal extraction, nonetheless also affects the comminution and classification processes. Among many another classifier, hydrocyclone is a vital equipment used vastly in many industries. The main advantages over other classifiers are a static body, low operating cost and maintenance, high throughput, low floor space requirement etc. A typical hydrocyclone consists of a cylindrical section with a central tube connected to a conical section with a discharge tube. The fluid is injected tangentially into hydrocyclone causes swirling and thus generates centrifugal force within the device. The multiphase interaction inside the hydrocyclone is extremely complex and mostly explained by theories based on hypothesis. In past years, many theoretical models were proposed like a balanced orbital model (Criner, 1950), the residence time model (Reitema, 1961) etc. Though these models give an estimation of the cut-size and other performance parameters, it cannot predict the accurate performance of the actual state of operation. Among these models, the balanced orbital theory is the most adapted concept, based on the force balances of the particle in the dual vortex flow of hydrocyclone. The finer particle is subjected to the inward drag force, generated from the outer vortex flow to the air core, and drags the particle towards the overflow. The larger particle with the higher mass have enhanced centrifugal force and falls into primary vortex near wall reporting to the underflow. Generally, the forces acting on the particle include the drag force, centrifugal force, pressure gradient force, added mass force, Saffman lift force, Magnus force and basset force (Kraipech, 2005). The major forces like a drag, centrifugal, pressure gradient are the function of the particle properties like the size and the density. Hence, the existence of the multi-size and the multi-density particle will affect the separation phenomenon, with the varied forces acting on it. Passive tomographic imaging is a technique that can be used for assessing seismic hazard in mines with high seismic activity induced by mining. The basic idea behind such an interpretation is the assumption that there is a relationship between high values of seismic velocity and high values of stresses in the rock mass. This relationship was confirmed both in laboratory an in situ measurements and constitutes the basis for rock-burst and seismic hazard evaluation. In the paper seismic tomographic images of seismic P wave velocity and seismic P wave velocity gradient have been presented to determine rock-burst hazard and locate high seismic activity zones in the area of coal panel 306 in Zabrze Bielszowice mine. The zones of high values of P-wave seismic velocity gradient have been found to correlate with the distribution of high energetic seismic events. Passive tomographic images were obtained using modern bent ray tracing tomography algorithm with regularization. Recent study give rise to observation that not only high values of P-wave seismic velocity is important in seismic hazard assessment as many strong seismic events are located in the areas of high values of velocity gradient. This recent observation permits to increase quality of passive tomographic imaging for detection of seismogenic zones and is presented in the paper. The advantage of passive tomography comparing to active tomography is that sources of seismic waves are generated by rock mass itself and costly controlled explosions are not necessary. Another practical limitation of active tomography is the size of study area which usually do not exceed 200 m by 200 m. This restriction does not appear in passive tomography where area of study is usually 2000 m by 2000 m and the tomographic images delineate velocity structure in locations where mining induced seismicity take place. Passive tomography method utilized in analysis of rock mass state in underground mines encounter some difficulties concerned with the numerical stability of optimization algorithms. In the presented approach to passive tomography problem numerical stability is obtained by special regularization method and by application of very stable numerical seismic ray-tracing algorithm.

THE shatter cut, or burn cut as it is often called, is one in which the centre of the round is almost reamed out by drilling holes so close together that the blasting of a few holes shatters the rock embraced by all of them. The idea of shattering the centre of a face by shooting holes drilled parallel to one another is not new. Some miners have used this method for years past, when drilling quartz or a face near timber. But, they followed the age-old practice of first blasting the cut, then the square-up. It was not thought possible to shoot both together. In the case of machine men, the two largest contributors to silicosis are dust from drilling and dust from blasting. It follows, then, that material reduction of exposure to either constitutes an important step in lessening the incidence o silicosis. It was? the hope of being able to do away with the necessity of the men having to return early to a face, through dust concentrations of 60,000 to 80,000 particles per cubic centimeter, that aroused interest "in the shatter cut at McIntyre. Efforts to this end were successful. Now, with this kind of cut, all holes of a round are shot simultaneously.

In India, bauxite deposits are concentrated in Central India, Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats. Bauxites from various regions in Gujarat were identified during the present investigations of geochemical mapping. Different types of Bauxites samples were collected from Kachchh, Jamnagar, Porbunder, Junagarh, Bhavnagar and Amreli areas of Gujarat state and were studied in detail for their geochemical signatures to plot the data on Geochemical map. Raw bauxites were characterized by using powder XRD, XRF, ICP and optical microscopy techniques (with the help of Model microscope having both transmitted and reflected light setups) and were later examined to grade their quality. Most of the bauxites from Kachchh region were of high-grade (gibbsitic) type; while those of Sourashtra region were of low-grade (lateritic / calcitic) types. Most of these bauxites were either of ferruginous/lateritic or of calcareous/calcitic types. Based on the mineralogical composition, such as gibbsite, hematite and/or goethite, Kaolinite and calcite minerals present in particular bauxites, the deposits were graded. Finally, the Geochemical mapping of Bauxites for Gujarat region was prepared and discussed.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The morphological changes that gold undergoes during transport in gravel-bed rivers are a function of transport distance in particular, as well as bedload material, river gradient and velocity, and bed roughness. Gold size, shape and outline are modified by abrasion, flattening, folding and breakage during transport. The resultant morphological characteristics can be used to predict source types, source location and transport distance, as well as the origin and dispersal patterns of gold in ancient placers where the transport history is unknown.

Subsidence due to abandoned coal mines has received copious attention recently. This is a result of many factors such as the enactment of new mining laws and the effect subsidence has on land use over the mines. Prediction of subsidence features and the time aspects over supercritical extraction (i.e., longwall and high extraction ratio pillaring) is relatively accurate. However, predicting when subsidence will occur and the surface features&apos; size and shape above subcritical extraction of room and pillar mining is not yet possible. This paper will discuss the factors that influence the time aspects of subsidence in room and pillar mining.

Evidence of the fact that the beneficiation of sand and gravel is now going on is readily observed by visiting various and and gravel plants almost throughout the U.S.A. of necessity this beneficiation process is concentrated more in certain areas than in others, and it is steadily increasing. Therefore, it can be said that beneficiation is now one of the processes inn the manufacturing of sand and gravel, It started some ten to twelve, years ago when the need for beneficiation made itself known, and when the manufacturers of sand and gravel producing machinery began to make equipment available to the industry.

Vertical and lateral load tests were carried out on two 13 m deep bored cast-in-place instrumented piles, socketed into weathered sandstone. The first pile, 1200 mm in diameter, was loaded vertically to a maximum of 16000 kN and then loaded to failure under lateral load (1900 kN). The second pile, 1500 mm in diameter, was tested under lateral load up to a maximum of 2400 kN. It was found that the deflections of the 1200 mm pile were more than twice those of the 1500 mm pile under similar loads. The soils on the site are not easily tested in the laboratory, or by conventional insitu site investigation techniques, parameters needed in design can only be reliably obtained from pile test results. In this report shear moduli are back analysed from the vertical load test and the two lateral load tests. For these similarly installed piles very different design parameters were determined from the lateral load tests, the only known major difference between the piles being that the 1200 mm pile was loaded vertically before it was loaded laterally. Changes in G values needed to match performance under vertical load if applicable to lateral loading could have accounted for a significant amount of the difference.

While assaying some copper carbonate ore from the Frazer claims, Similakameen, B. C., I noticed that on parting the gold button a deep orange solution was formed. The button gave off pink bands in the nitric acid, which became deep orange at a short distance from it; and as it traveled over the surface of the porcelain dish, it left a deep orange track behind. As the button brightened in the cupel, it appeared to have a bronze color; but I have since found that when amarillium is in large excess of the gold, the button is a very dark gray.
