Diesel powered machines are doing some specific operations in the cyclic order required by the technical process. The dynamics of this process in certain conditions has an essential influence on environmental health conditions in the working area. The main purpose of this paper is to show, using computer simulation, how the movement (dynamic) of diesel vehicles effects environmental health standards and also how to determine the required air quantity for ventilation.

An IBM/XT microcomputer with 10 MB hard disk storage, together with automatic sensing capability of truck movements at several key locations in the pit, formed the core of this automatic truck dispatching system. System software is written primarily in MICROSOFT FORTRAN with supporting subroutines in MACRO assembly language. The software is designed to automatically monitor truck movement throughout the pit, to make heuristic assignments based on expected shovel availability and truck travel times, and to record production statistics. It is currently dimensioned to handle 50 trucks, 10 shovels, 10 dump sites, and three material types. Due to the lack of funds to purchase the necessary communications hardware, the work related to the automatic sensing of truck movements has not been performed to date. Otherwise, the system is fully operational on a realtime mode.

A semiquantitative test for the presence and identification of cesium and rubidium in rocks, clays, and mineral waters has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The test can be used in the field, as a guide for the prospector, geologist, or mining engineer engaged in location or development [w]ork. It comprises two simple spot tests of a solution prepared from the [m]ineral sample. Phosphomolybdic acid, added to a drop of the test solution, [d]etects cesium, rubidium, and potassium in quantities as low as 60 parts per [m]illion. Silicomolybdic acid, added to a second drop of test solution, enables the operator to distinguish between cesium and/or rubidium and potassium. Test procedures, equipment requirements, and limitations of the method are described in this report. Cesium and rubidium were discovered in 1860 and 1861 by Bunsen and Kirchhoff with a spectroscope. The elements usually occur together, particularly in granite and granitic pegmatites. Rubidium does not occur as an essential constituent of any known mineral, yet it is found as a minor element in so many minerals that rubidium is 16th in abundance in the earth's crust. Cesium, which ranks as the 37th most abundant element, is the principal component of pollucite and a minor element in a wide variety of minerals.

Copper sulfate pentahydrate is recovered from the spent etchant waste stream of a printed circuit board manufacturing facility by cooling crystallization. The fluidized bed crystallizer contains submerged cooling surfaces which are bathed in a stream of air. The air bubbles provide agitation which improve heat transfer, reduce fouling and maintain crystals in suspension. The recently patented apparatus (US 5,523,064) has advantages when compared to a conventional surface cooled crystallizer including capital cost, ease of operation and production of larger more uniform crystals

After a brief introduction on the principles of contact electrification and a synthetic illustration of the Turbocharger separator, the successful results obtained with different raw materials are given and discussed, with particular reference to a North African run-of-mine with carbonate gangue, a crude ore from India containing pyrite and a mineral sample from Angola having quartzeous gangue. The pre-eminent effect of target surface temperature in the charging device of the separator is emphasised. On the basis of the results of both batch experiments and long-run tests the prospects of industrial application appear very interesting both from the technical and economic points of view, even when compared with froth flotation.

The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. The large volume of water used in coal preparation plants makes water recycling a necessity. Economical cleaning of dirty water usually requires flocculation with an efficient organic polyelectrolyte. This paper discusses identification of optimum flocculant systems. Supporting laboratory data with on-site tests and full scale field trials supplies information necessary for matching the polymer to the plant.

An infrared external reflection spectroscopy (ERS) technique has been developed to study the structure of the adsorbed layer of ethyl xanthate formed on copper and natural chalcocite (Cu2S) electrodes. The infrared technique provides information concerning the identity and the orientation of the adsorbed species at monolayer and submonolayer coverages. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have also been conducted to monitor changes at the surface. The results show that the first oxidation peak on the voltammograms for copper and the first and second oxidation peaks on the voltammograms for chalcocite electrodes are not characteristic of a chemisorbed xanthate species, which is contrary to what has been reported by other investigators previously. As evidenced by the XPS spectra, there was an increase in sulfur relative to copper on the copper and chalcocite surfaces over the potential region where these oxidation processes occur. The spectroscopic results (ERS, XPS) indicate that the second and third (on copper) and the third and fourth (on chalcocite) oxidation processes recorded on the voltammograms are due to cuprous ethyl xanthate adsorption. The orientation of the adsorbed molecules of xanthate was observed to change with increasing surface coverage. Therefore, it has been concluded that xanthate can modify the copper and chalcocite surface in two different ways. At lower potentials, xanthate is a source of sulfur for the formation of a sulfur-rich surface. At higher potentials, an adsorption layer of cuprous ethyl xanthate is formed. Contact angle measurements show that both of these processes of xanthate surface modification lead to an increase in the hydrophobicity of the substrates.

This paper is an attempt to place Canadian Precambrian volcanogenic deposits in perspective, by examining and compiling data regarding certain neglected fundamentals of size, grade, value, frequency distribution and spatial density. The discovery roles played by various exploration methods are compared and contrasted, and. using empirical methods, the probabilities of discovery are discussed, combined with the use of an effective 'cost-per-target' program. From these basic observations, realistic exploration judgments may be made. Using similar methodology, this format may be applied to other types of deposits. Precambrian volcanogenic deposits occur in a natural geometric progression in size. They number 110, of which 70% are pre-producers, producers or past-producers. These deposits are bonanzas and generally have a 'net pre-smelter' value of between $43 and $62 per ton. The statistically typical deposit is that which occupies the modal position, has 400,000 tons of ore, a value of $20 million and occurs with a frequency of 40%. A median deposit has 1.4 million tons of ore, a value of $70 million and occurs with a frequency of 15%. An upper-decile deposit ha s 13.3 million tons of ore. a value of $750 million and occurs with a frequency of 6.5%. The major, mid-upper-decile deposits have a minimum of 50 million tons of ore, a value of $3 billion and occur with a frequency of 4%. Five major volcanogenic deposits occur in the Precambrian and account for 54% of production. This contrasts with 55 deposits (all below the median) which account for 3.9% of production.

The lignites of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas are typically described as muitiseam deposits which contain quantities of day and sand in thin lenses or in admixture with the fuel itself. These materials are often included in the run-of-mine fuel and can have very adverse effects in the end use. Since May of 1982 the Dow Chemical Co. has operated a pilot plant for the beneficiation of lignites. This facility has successfully removed sand, clays and petrified wood from the lignite producing a fuel comparable to or better than the selectively harvested run-of-mine materials. The design, operation and results from this plant were presented by J. H. Everitt at the 1984 Coal Technology Conference.

In previous Technical Notes, W. R. Rose' and W. Purcell have discussed the capillary pressure data presented by Welge.' Welge obtained capillary pressure curves of the imbibition type in which it was necessary to apply to the apparent wetting phase a greater pressure than that of the non-wetting phase to complete the cycle and reduce the non-wetting phase saturation to low values. Rose suggests in his Note that conditions of equilibrium could not have prevailed, since the. non-wetting phase pressure must always be the greater. Pur-cell in his Note, proceeds to postulate a pore system consisting. of a series of "holes in a doughnut," in which he contends that under equilibrium conditions it is necessary to resort to negative capillary pressures before significant wetting phase displacement can take place. There is a remarkable similarity between the shape of the capillary pressure curve calculated by Purcell and those measured by Welge. It is the purpose of this Note to show that, because Purcell neglected to account for the behavior of the residual wetting phase saturation, his system was not in equilibrium during imbibition; and, furthermore, that if his system had been in equilibrium, negative capillary pressures would not have been possible. In Purcell's pore system, the residual wetting phase will form pendular rings at the interstitial spaces existing somewhere within the system, for example, such as those spaces between "doughnuts" as shown in Fig. 1. The true capillary pressure is that across the pendular ring interface, and for the system to be in equilibrium the pressure drop across all interfaces must be the same, including that across the interface in the tight pores A of diaphragm B (Fig. 1). As the pressure across the cell is reduced, the advancing interface will move into the pore from the diaphragm, but at each pressure, the curvature of the pendular rings must be the same as that of the advancing interface if equilibrium is to prevail. Since equilibrium conditions are the basis for the entire argument, it follows that pendular rings must grow as wetting phase enters the pore, that is, as the pressure across the cell is lowered. In Purcell's calculated curve, the residual wetting phase saturation remains constant as the capillary pressure decreases. Thus, his curve does not represent an equilibrium process.

The reduction of perfluorocarbon (PFC) emissions from aluminum electrolytic cells is a key issue in reducing greenhouse gases at all aluminum smelters, The emission of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) gases during anode effects at smelters can be calculated using two different methods; anode effect-minutes slope and anode effect overvoltage, This work demonstrates that the optimum method depends to a large extent on the type of anode effect kill algorithm utilized at each smelter, CF4 emissions vary widely from aluminum cells depending on the type of anode effect kill method utilized; fast, aggressive anode bridge movements vs. slower, moderate anode bridge movements.

As mining operations become larger and more complex, larger volumes of geological, geophysical, and production data must be manipulated and interpreted on a day-to-day basis. Because of the large volume of data, more sophisticated data storage strategies, interpretation tools, and visualisation tools must be used by exploration and mining operations in order to remain competitive. Critical to better practice is an understanding of the basic syntax and character of geological and mining data, expressed in the form of a data model. In the short-term, a data model can be used to implement or evaluate schemes for data storage or exchange. It can be used to evaluate software. In the longer term, a data model is essential to the design of the next generation of software for 3D geological modelling. In this and the related paper (Lin et al, 1995) the data model in use by CSIRO is presented, together with: 1. examples of the use of data transfer in the linkage of existing mining software; and 2. examples of the use of the data model in software design.

The cost to supply ventilation may exceed 40% of the total mine energy cost for underground mines and is often higher for deeper mines. The goal of Ventilation-on-Demand (VOD) is to ensure that the required quantity and quality of air is supplied to underground mining crews and diesel equipment at the least energy expenditure (minimum cost). A VOD system may include control of surface fans (Supply & Exhaust), underground booster fans, auxiliary fans and automated regulators/dampers to regulate the flow of air with more control elements providing more value. Strategically located Air monitoring stations measure air quantity and quality and provide feed-back enabling control. The modular design involving controls, intelligent instrument and intelligent motor control centres coupled with a communication network allows the quick installation, commissioning and expansion of the system as the mine develops. The result is a very robust, flexible system while reducing maintenance costs and spare parts. This paper discusses the impact of sensors, installation and commissioning on advanced controls and provides solutions for in-field applications.

"Swedish iron ore contains about 0.1 %V. The vanadium is reduced to the hot metal in a blast furnace and oxidised to the slag in a converter. The high V-content, up to 5 % V, leads to a very limited external application of the steel slag in Sweden. Since 2004, MISTRA - the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research has together with the steel and mining industry in Sweden and Finland initiated and supported a long term project aiming at efficient recovery of vanadium in the slag, and at the same time a useful slag product with low V-content. The proposed concept consists of a reduction step and a phosphorus removal step. This paper will highlight some of the results with focus on the various metallurgical reactors used for slag reduction, including results from recently performed pilot trials using a DC furnace for cotreatment of metallurgical slags and other wastes.IntroductionToday, less than half of the produced LD-slag in Sweden is recycled to the blast furnace as a lime source and the rest is temporarily stored inside the steel plant. The steel slags cannot be used externally due to its content of vanadium and free lime. As the slag storage area is limited, this has become a problem for Swedish steel producers. The disposition of the slag is also a great waste of a valuable vanadium resource. The current potential value of vanadium in the discharged steel slag annually amounts to roughly US$ 100 million. Currently, Swerea MEFOS is conducting an 8-year vanadium recovery project called VILD (Vanadium in LD-slag) aiming at efficient recovery of vanadium and at the same time producing a useful slag product with low V-content. The project is financed by MISTRA - the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research and the steel and mining industry in Sweden and Finland. Various reactors and process options have been tested in the past 7 years, from 3 kg laboratory scale, 150 kg induction furnace, 3 MVA pilot DC furnace, 5 MVA pilot AC furnace, 5 tons Kaldo furnace, to full scale direct hot slag reduction in the industrial site (12 tons of slag). This paper will introduce the VILD-concept and review the experiences gained from these trials. The advantages and disadvantages of the different options will be discussed and concluded."

Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. The influence of the early stages of precipitation on the kinetics and structure of martensite formation in Fe-27Ni and Fe-29.5Ni alloys containing from 0 to 10 pct Ti was examined with X-ray and electron microscopy techniques. The formation of a coherent, ordered preprecipitate had a profound stabilizing effect on the austenite. The Ms was decreased by increased titanium content and aging time up to a critical time. When the critical aging time was exceeded, the Ms was observed to increase markedly. The formation of the clusters was insuppressible and the volume fraction of clusters formed during the quench was a function of the titanium content. Martensite resulting from transformation of the clustered austenite is tetragonal with the c/a ratio increasing with titanium content. A model for the tetragonality is suggested. The morphology and substructure of the m artensite is inter-preted in terms of the above information and the cur-rent models of twinned martensite. ThE ramifications of precipitation in austenite to the properties of austenite have been the subject of numerous investigations. The current research is concerned with the influence of precipitation in austenite on the kinetics and structure of subsequent marten-site formation. In a previous investigation, Abraham et al.1 followed the aging reaction in an Fe-29.5Ni-4.2Ti* (at. pct) alloy using an X-ray diffraction technique. This technique, employing a Guinier camera, provided kinetic measurements through observation of the side band position as a function of aging time. The salient results of this work were: 1) The initiation of precipitation was not suppressed by quenching, i.e., there was a finite cluster zone size at zero aging time; and 2) The hardness of the aged austenite correlated extremely well with the zone size. During the previous work it was noted that the mar-tensite formed after aging was tetragonal, substanti-ating an earlier observation.2 Systematic investiga-tion revealed that the martensite was tetragonal in both the solution-treated then quenched, and the solu-tion-treated, aged, and quenched condition, and, furthermore, that a marked stabilization of the austenite occurred as a function of aging time. The present work is concerned with documenting the tetragonality and the stabilization phenomena as well as the ob- served microstruction with a suggested rationale for the behavior noted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the alloys are listed in Table I. The analyses were performed after the solution treatment of the strip material. Nickel was determined using the standard dimethy1-glyoxime procedure whereas titanium was determined colorimetrically with hydrogen peroxide and volumetrically by titrating with ferric iron. The materials were melted in a 5-lb vacuum induction furnace, cast into 2-in.-diam ingots, and forged in a temperature range of 950. to 1200°C to 1/2-in. slabs. The three higher titanium containing materials cracked during forging; therefore, to get the alloys into strip form, slices 1/8 in. thick were cut from the slab, homogenized 4 hr at 1150°C, then cold-rolled to a 0.04-in. thickness. The remaining slabs were hot-rolled, homogenized 4 hr at 1065"C, then cold-rolled to a final thickness of 0.03 in. All of the heat treatments were performed under a protective atmosphere of argon. The Ms temperature for most of the alloys is below room temperature; therefore, it was possible to solution treat, quench to room temperature, polish, and then observe the transformation optically on a cold-stage microscope. To determine the effect of aus-tenitizing temperature on Ms, eight of the alloys were treated at two temperatures, 1025" and 1120°C. No measurable variations in Ms were noticed. The remaining alloys were treated at 1025°C. The specimens, : by 5/16 by 0.03 in., were austeni-tized in a vertical tube furnace under a dynamic argon atmosphere. The bottom of the tube was submerged in water for quenching purposes. The question of stabilization that may be operating at room temperature was investigated and found to be negligible.
