ONLY IN THE Province of Saskatchewan is natural sodium sulphate found in Canada in amounts large enough to make recovery economically sound. Geologists have estimated that the numerous deposits within the Province contain upwards of 200 million tons of Glauber's salt. There are twenty-one deposits in the Province which contain 500,-000 or more tons and about two dozen with lesser amounts. The first recorded production of sodium sulphate in Saskatchewan was in 1918. The company concerned, and others that attempted to develop the industry in its early stages, were unsuccessful. Their failures were caused by two main factors -lack of knowledge of efficient operating methods and the unstable market situation for the finished product. Today, the situation is changed in both respects and the product, commonly referred to as 'saltcake", is a very important chemical requirement of many industries throughout the world. Before proceeding with remarks on manufacturing methods it should be stated that, although this is a general paper on the manufacturing methods and end uses of the saltcake produced in the Province, the writer is, of course, more familiar with the plants operated by Saskatchewan Minerals than with other operations and perhaps may be excused for dealing more particularly with the plants of that Compa11y.

Improving reaction effectiveness of asbestos tailings and acid is main means to increase the productivity of magnesium hydroxide and amorphous silica and to reduce production costs. In this paper, the process optimization of acid-leaching reaction process of asbestos tailings is reported. Through the orthogonal experiments of four influence factors, such as acid consumption, reaction temperature, reaction time and initial acid concentration in the leaching reaction. The experiment results indicated that the optimal process parameters were as follows: reaction temperature was 95?, reaction time was 1.5h, acid consumption was 218.9g hydrochloric acid(37%) per 100g asbestos tailings and initial acid concentration was about 25%. The influence significance sequence of the four factors was as follows: reaction temperature > reaction time > mass concentration of hydrochloric acid > hydrochloric acid consumption. Under the optimum process conditions, the leaching rate of MgO was 97.3%, total iron 98.15% and Al2O3 57.9%.

The excavation of a tunnel through rock and mixed ground of basalt and silty clays presents a challenge to engineering organisations. Such was the situation facing the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) in constructing the 15.3 km, 5.5m dia. tunnel component of the new Western Trunk Sewerage System. The tunnel geology showed that there were two distinct components to the excavation - rock and mixed ground. By drawing on extensive experience in the use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's) used previously by the MMBW and using techniques developed for predicting TBM per- formance, a comparison of the options of drill and blast versus TBM was made. The conclusion was that TBM methods would provide the best solution to the problem. Tenders were called for the supply of a TBM. A performance specification was used to attract tenders offering designs which re- flected the state of the art on an internation- al level. Particular features required by the MMBW were included in the specification. The excavation planning and operation are described in this paper. The production achieved has shown that the TBM can very adequately handle rock excavation (best weekly production 167.9m). Extreme conditions of mixed ground with heavy groundwater inflows have been handled using an auxiliary thrust system to maintain gripper reaction through the soft ground encountered.

Multiple seam interactions are a major ground control hazard in many U.S. underground coal mines. The two most common types are: • Undermining, where stress concentrations caused by previous full extraction in an overlying seam is the primary concern, and; • Overmining, where previous full extraction in an underlying seam can result in stress concentrations and rock damage from subsidence. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has completed a major study aimed at helping to identify the location and likely severity of these interactions. In the course of field visits to mines throughout the U.S., more than 300 multiple seam case histories were assembled into the largest data base of multiple seam case histories ever collected. These data were analyzed with the multivariate statistical technique of logistic regression. The study also employed LaM2D to estimate the multiple seam stresses, ALPS and ARMPS to determine pillar stability factors, and the CMRR to measure roof quality. The study resulted in the development of a computer program, called Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), which can help mine planners to evaluate each potential interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS first evaluates pillar design by calculating the single seam Stability Factor (SFSS) using ALPS or ARMPS. It also automatically generates a LaM2D analysis that provides the additional multiple seam stress so that the final, multiple seam SFMS can be determined. The second part of the AMSS procedure builds upon the statistical findings that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries, and weaker roof significantly increases the risk of multiple seam interactions. AMSS quantifies these effects and predicts the outcome in terms of three levels of risk: GREEN (where a major multiple seam interaction is considered unlikely), YELLOW (where adding a pattern of cable bolts or other equivalent supplemental support could greatly reduce the probability of a major interaction.), or RED (a major interaction should be considered likely, and it may be desirable to avoid the area entirely).

THE Helen Mine, of the Algoma Steel Corporation, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, Canada, has produced more than 6,240,290 tons of iron ore. Prior to and during World War I, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore were shipped, and from 1939 to the end of the 1944 season, 3,416,921 gross tons of siderite ore were produced from open-pit operations. Brief descriptions are given of the nature of the ore, the mining methods employed and the manner of treatment of the ore. Shipment of the finished product, known as Algoma sinter, is made to blast furnaces in both Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies-i.e., the oxide ores of the Old Helen and the siderite of the New Helen-are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 10,000 ft. and has a maximum width of 1000 ft. The ores are considered to be a product of introduction of iron-bearing material accompanied by replacement of the rocks already present. It is shown that introduction took place subsequent to the development of the major folded structures. It is believed the iron-bearing material emanated from an igneous source.

THE diffusion of carbon in gamma iron plays an essential role in many metallurgical processes. In carburizing, in graphitizing, in homogenizing, in the formation of pearlite from austenite, and in other processes, migra-tion of carbon in gamma iron occurs.1,2 A full understanding of the rate at which these processes occur obviously requires a knowledge of the rate of diffusion of carbon. In carburizing, for example, the depth of carbon pentration is determined by the carbon concentration in solid solution at the surface, and by the rate of diffusion inward of the carbon. Until reliable data on the rates of diffusion of carbon are available it is unlikely that a full quantitative description of this process will be obtained. In the formation of pearlite from austenite, the segregation of carbon and alpha iron from the austenite obviously requires the diffusion of carbon; the rate at which pearlite nodules grow is evidently controlled at least in part by the rate of diffusion of carbon; it is unlikely that we shall understand the factors that determine the rate of growth unless data on rates of diffusion of carbon, and the variation of these with com-position, grain size, and temperature are available. Accordingly it was decided: (1) to determine, more accurately than hitherto, the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite over a wide temperature and a wide concentration range, (2) to study the influence of grain size and impurities on this diffusion coefficient, and (3) to study the effect of manganese and nickel on the rate of diffusion of carbon in the austenite of manganese and nickel steels, respectively; the influence of carbon on the rate of diffusion of manganese and of nickel will be made the subject of later papers. The Eagle Mountain Mine of the Kaiser Steel Corporation is located in the California portion of the Colorado Desert at a distance of about 60 miles east of Indio, California. At the present time, this mine is producing at the rate of 5,000,000 tons of concentrate per year. A total of 1,000,000 tons of ore per year is presently being sold on the Japanese market while the remainder is consumed by the Kaiser Steel Company blast furnaces at Fontana, California. A new Pellet Plant and Concentrator is presently under, construction with completion scheduled for May or June 1965. This plant will have a rated capacity of 2,200,000 tons of pellets per year and essentially all of this production will be sold to Japanese steel companies.

Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd. is carrying out a low cost production using a Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace (T-FSF), which is an improved version of Outokumpu Type Flash Smelting Furnace but without slag cleaning furnace and also by developing its own coke combustion technology. Coke combustion technology that is the basis of the system has been improved several times and, at present, it has evolved to a stage where it can be reproduced on the Computer guided system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF (CCCT) using a general- purpose computer. This CCCT is featured by 'its trend control and predicting function, and an operator can freely control the operation parameters so as to control the operation flexibly. We have recently developed an overall energy reduction system covering the Smelting Plant to Sulfuric Acid Plant, which we call an Optimum Low Cost Operation System (OLCO) to reconsider the energy costs including coke, heavy fuel oil, and electric power. In this report, we would like to present the recent operation of T-FSF based on CCCT as well as the optimum energy operation utilizing OLCO system.

"The uranium deposits upon which the Rabbit Lake project story is based are located at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin just west of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This paper provides a general review of the exploration history for the major deposits and the influence of an expanding geological data base, which served to guide the continuing exploration programs.A brief description of each of the deposits is provided in order of their discovery and with emphasis upon their relative geological and mineralogical characteristics.The Rabbit Lake and Eagle Point orebodies are monometallic uranium deposits localized by thrust faults within the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Cof/ins Bay A-zone, B-zone, and D-zone are polymetaflic U, Ni, As, Co (Au , Ag) deposits located within the Helikian Athabasca Group at its unconformable contact with the underlying Wollaston Group. INTRODUCTIONThis paper demonstrates the importance of applying the accumulated geological knowledge, gained through the exploration, mining, and development process, to the ongoing success of exploration programs. To emphasize this point, the basic geology of each of the major Rabbit Lake area deposits will be presented in chronological order of their discovery and subsequent development. These depos its include Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point. The geological descriptions are based primarily upon the detailed observations of many current and former geologist s employed by both Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and Eldorado Resources Limited. Much of the early historical data was obtained from Dr. E.E.N. Smith, formerly with Eldorado Resources Limited. Regional GeologyThe Rabbit Lake area which includes the Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposit s, is located on the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin close to the western shores of Wollaston Lake (Fig. I). The area is in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield within the Wollaston lithostructural domain, at the eastern edge of the Athabasca Group. The uranium deposits occur within both the Wollaston Group metasedimentary assemblage of probable early Aphebian age, and the diagenetic ally altered quartz sandstones and conglomerates of the Athabasca Group of Paleohelikian age. Both units unconformably overlie granitoid gneisses interlayered with metasediments and a graphitic iron formation all believed to be of Archean age. All uranium depo sits in the Rabbit Lake area occur in close proximity to the Paleohelikian - Aphebian or Paleohelikian - Archean unconformity."

THE expansion of facilities for rapid transportation of perishables by train, truck and airplane has necessitated consideration of refrigerants of a minimum weight and volume per pound of cooling and has stimulated the use of solid carbon dioxide commercially. The gas probably has not had wide application in the past in air-cooling equipment for mines, theaters or buildings, owing to its thermodynamic properties, as will be deduced from examination of Table 2. However, consumption of the liquid in carbonating beverages remains a dominant factor. In addition to these uses, carbon dioxide is employed to a limited degree as an explo-sive in the liquid form, as a freezing agent in plumbing, in laboratories for low-temperature work, and in the manufacture of golf balls.

Blasting causes movement of the rock and can be detrimental to the accurate delineation of the ore and waste regions within the resulting muck pile. The consequences can be ore loss and dilution. However, ore loss and dilution can be minimized and significant increases in profit can be realized if the movement can be accurately measured. Various methods have been used to measure muck pile movement including poly-pipe, chain and sandbags but these have been either inaccurate or impractical. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, JKMRC, has developed an electronic blast movement monitor that provides accurate three-dimensional movement vectors following a production blast. From this information, the ore block boundaries in the blasted bench can be adjusted to compensate for the measured movement and then ore recovery can be optimised. Following initial development of the prototype technology, the JKMRC further developed and demonstrated the system in actual production blasts at an open pit gold mine operated by Placer Dome Inc.

This report describes a trip to Europe in the interest of safety in coal mines. It reviews the Eighth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Re-search, which met in Dortmund-Derne, Germany, July 5-10, 1954, to discuss results of studies made in different countries to improve health and safety conditions under-ground. It also summarizes information on subjects of special interest in the United States gained by the writer in visits to mining experiment stations in Belgium, France, and England. The efforts being made to protect life and property underground were discussed, and ideas and experiences were interchanged freely, not only during the conference but also during visits to the several countries. Helpful information was obtained on many topics of interest, but time did not permit as thorough a discussion on some of them as might be desired.

Chemists, physicists and others, whose occupations necessitate the use of fine scales, have heretofore regretted their inability to obtain any which would remain uniformly accurate. The difference between the theoretical and the actual results obtained in the ordinary balance (provided the pivot-distances are exact) is mainly due to the frictional resistance between the knifeedges and their bearings. This frictional resistance, although reduced to a minimum in the finest scales when new, constantly increases, thereby decreasing the sensitiveness proportionately. When examined under the microscope, neither the surface of the knife-edge nor that of' its hearings ever appears perfectly smooth. Soft kunife-edges are easily blunted, whereas hard ones are brittle and liable to crumble under the effects of over-load or shock. Prof. Frederick A. Roeder for many years attempted to discover some means by ,which the knife-edge could be replaced with some device free from the above-mentioned objections. His experiments convinced him that a torsion-joint was best suited for that purpose. After he had communicated his conclusion to me, we jointly developed the system to its present form. A torsion-wire had been used for the centre of rotation, prior to Prof. Roeder's invention, but it was found impossible to replace the terminal knife-edges with torsion-joints.

The influence of layering on the rate of heat transfer through a packed bed consisting of particles of two different sizes and heat capacities has been determined by measuring the heat front velocity through beds of quartzite particles and iron ore pellets. The heat front velocity through the layered beds was less than that through a bed consisting of a random mixture of the par- ticles. This is due to the formation of an interface in which the smaller pellets in one layer penetrate into the layer of quartzite Below.

The distribulion of dislocatiorls genevnted during the propagalion of hydrogen-induced cracks in Fe-Si cryslcrls was studied as a funclion of temperature f-110o lo 243°C) and silicorz conlenl (3.1 and 4.2 pct). The experimenlal YeSnllS were compaved with the results of an elastic-plastic wodel that relates the size of the pluslic .zone to the cvack length, internal pressure, and yield stress. it was found that the clzunges in the dislocctlion cryrays with lemperature and combosition can be e-kplaincd by the lemperatrnre and composilion dependence of the yield stress. An wmtsual feature of this study was the observation of low -temperature noncrystrrllogruphic cracks. PLASTIC relaxation can occur at the edge of a moving crack by the operation of pre-existing dislocation sources or by the creation of new sources in a region of perfect 1attice.l'2 The amount of relaxation in a given crystal depends on the crack velocity and the temperature, and can determine whether a crack propagates in a brittle or a ductile manner.1-3 Tetelman and Robertson4 observed microcracks m Fe-3 pct Si single crystals that formed on (100) planes by the precipitation of hydrogen gas during electrolytic charging at 23°C. The plastic deformation accompanying crack propagation was observed in the form of dislocation etch pits and an extensive analysis has been made of the size, shape, and crystallography of the dislocation arrays5-7 This paper describes the effect of temperature on the plastic deformation generated around hydrogen-induced cracks in Fe-3.1 pct Si and Fe-4.2 pct Si single crystals. The observations are compared with the results of an elastic-plastic model for yielding around a crack containing an internal pressure. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The composition of the materials used in this study are given in Table I. The Rio Tinto Technology Group recently initiated a priority program to examine how water management practices could be improved within the GroupÆs spheres of activity. Rio Tinto Technical Services (TS), the technical services consulting group of the Technology Group, has for many years been undertaking water management reviews and assisting group operations with the development of responsible water management strategies and plans. Rio Tinto therefore requested that Rio Tinto Technical Services develop a world-class approach to mine water management that will drive improvement in strategic assurance and operational efficiency of water at the companyÆs managed operations across the world. The initiative, known as æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ, includes the selection and use of state-of-the-art management, technical tools and methodologies to strive for best practice. The Rio Tinto Technical Services approach facilitates a consistent and objective assessment of performance across the entire spectrum of complex water management issues within a mining operation, from initial exploration through to decommissioning and close-out of the operation. Based on this rigorous assessment, detailed action plans can be developed, prioritised and scheduled for subsequent implementation. This paper presents the progress and experience gained to date in the æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ program, demonstrated by means of a pilot study conducted at Northparkes Mines in New South Wales.

The Azores islands are located on a triple junction where the American, African (AFR), and Euroasian (EUR) plates meet. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), oriented N-S, represents two branches of the T; an E-W branch defines the EUR/AFR boundary called the Terceira Rift. The nature and structure of this plate boundary, as well as the dynamics of the interaction of tectonics and volcanism remain unconstrained. The Azores plateau is seated on a mantle domain of anomalously low seismic S-wave velocities, and gravity and geoid anomalies, where the apparent thick crust is thought to relate to larger degrees of melting initiated at greater depths [1]. The cause of these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [2]. The geochemistry of the subaerial and most submarine lavas from the plateau reinforces the plume model beneath the Azores [3-4]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [5]. [ ] SEAFLOOR HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS IN THE AZORES AREA (36ºN ? 40ºN) More than 150 active and fossil hydrothermal systems are known in the oceanic seafloor [6]. Many more are yet to be found on vast oceanic areas that haven?t been explored [7]. THE hydrotator coal-cleaning process was developed as an economic necessity to meet the ever-increasing demand for an inexpensive method of cleaning coal down to the sizes ordinarily referred to as "dust." As the most urgent demand seemed to be in the anthracite field, all experimental work has been conducted in that territory during the past 2 years, with the exception of a few months during the strike of 1925-26, when some experiments were performed in the Alabama bituminous fields. The first commercial plant was constructed at the Middle Creek Colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co., Pottsville, Pa. This plant is now operating. APPLICATION The field of application of the process is: 1. Cleaning anthracite fines, ordinarily described as "slush" or "silt." Slush contains all sizes from %2 in. down to and including "dust." (Anthracite passing a 32-in. mesh is also referred to as No. 2 Barley and No. 4 Buckwheat.) 2. Cleaning sizes too fine for recovery by other methods. 3. Removal of coal from sand circulated in the Chance sand-flotation process. 4. Cleaning of bituminous sizes. from 3/8 in. down to "dust. 5. As equipment for the performance of the froth flotation process. 6. Other separating, extraction and _washing. processes which may be considered outside the realm of coal cleaning. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION Fig. 1 shows the method of classification practised under the Hydrotator patent:1 In coal cleaning the machines are operated as "hindered settling" classifiers, the flow of solids and liquids being so controlled that the units may be combined in series.

The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles.
