STILFONTEIN and surrounding areas gave nega-tive results in all prospecting attempts since about 1904 when Goerz and Co., a forerunner of Union Corporation Ltd., first drilled in the region and on the farm Stilfontein. Subsequent efforts by African and European Investments Co. and Anglo American Corp. from 1934-37 were completely unsuccessful. Holes drilled by these companies on the farms Riet-fontein, Hessie, and Palmietfontein were stopped in the Lower Witwatersrand system without finding payable reefs. The results of gravimeter, ground magnetometer, and aerial magnetometer surveys are presented in the area, in and around the new Stilfontein Gold Mine, in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal in the Union of South Africa. The gravimeter and ground magnetic surveys were completed in 1947—48. The gravity anomalies suggested a block of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites faulted-up between denser rocks of dolomite and Ventersdorp lava. Boreholes S.T. 1, 2, and 3 were drilled in 1948 and, after penetrating the dolomite and Ventersdorp lava, entered Upper Witwatersrand quartzites and intersected the Gold Estates Reef and Vaal Reef. Subsequent drilling delineated the suboutcrop of the Vaal Reef and determined the main structure of this horizon. The gold content of the Vaal Reef was highly payable and shaft sinking is now in progress. The Stilfontein Gold Mining Co. has been formed and, up to date, f5,000,000 capital has been raised for plant, shaft sinking, and development. The payable Vaal Reef horizon extends further south from Stilfontein, the reef occurring at increasing depths. It is possible that at least another mine may be established on these deeper horizons. The farm Stilfontein 39 is situated in the Klerksdorp District of the Transvaal. This farm and the surrounding areas have been subjected to repeated programs of prospecting dating back to about 1904, when Goerz and Co., the forerunner of Union Corporation, Ltd., first drilled on the farm and in the surrounding areas. From 1934-37, numerous boreholes were drilled on the neighboring farms, Riet-fontein. Hessie. and Palmietfontein, by African and European Investment Co. and Anglo American Corp. All these efforts were completely unsuccessful, and nobody suspected any possible gold-bearing area on Stilfontein until about 1947, when a gravity traverse run by B. D. Maree on the main road, showed a negative gravity anomaly. During 1947-48, the writer's organization completed gravimeter and magnetic surveys on Stilfontein and Rieffontein. An area of negative gravity anomalies was mapped, and it was suggested that this could be caused by blocks of Upper Witwatersrand quartzites, of the average density of 2.65, faulted up between dolomites and Ventersdorp lavas, the density of both of these rocks being 2.8. Fig. 1 shows the geology of the area as mapped by L. T. Nel of the Geological Survey of South Africa. The boreholes on Stilfontein, with the exception of a single hole of Goerz and Co., were drilled after the completion of the geophysical survey. The grouping of the first boreholes S.T. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, clearly shows that these were located in the zone of negative gravity anomalies. Fig. 2 shows the gravity anomaly contours. Fig. 3 shows two sections across the gravity anomaly, together with the corresponding geological sections as obtained from boreholes. The close relation between gravity values and thickness of dolomite plus Ventersdorp lavas is striking. The two latter formations having the same density (2.8), act as one mass as far as gravity effects are concerned. Fig. 4 shows the magnetic anomalies observed on the ground by vertical magnetometers and at 500 ft abbve mean ground level by aerial magnetometer. The latter are anomalies of the total magnetic intensity. The magnetic results show that, on the farm Rietfontein and on the northern half of Stilfontein. Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X-ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

During the past decade, Latin America has commanded an ever growing percentage of the world’s mineral exploration expenditures. Today, it controls approximately 30%. This has led to an increased number of large and small mineral discoveries over prior years for a variety of metals and the construction of many new mines. Its dominance is also seen in the larger than expected share of international mining capital investment. This has given its workers a competitive edge in global terms and an expertise that will ensure a long-term longevity to its mining industry. The best incentive for making vestment decisions is success. In this regard, Latin America’s success has compounded the incentives for further investment. Despite the large amount of foreign investment in Latin America, the wealth of these nations is not merely in its geological potential. The reason that several Latin American countries rank as global leaders in metal production is strongly influenced by their development of a strong mining culture, a culture which has been cultivated over many centuries. Good business practices provide another strong attraction to these regions. Additionally, Latin Americans have strong scientific and technical expertises. This is seen both in the investments’ size and the preference for high domestic employment. Relative to the number of domestic miners, the number of expatriates operating in Latin America is only a token few. In essence, the world markets are investing into the local geology and people.

"Carbon dioxide has been used for extinguishing electrical fires of many kinds (1, 3, 4) 3/ and more recently has been applied to some extent in fighting coal-mine fires (5). This report is concerned with the possibility of an electric current being conducted from a live power source, such as a trolley wire, across the impinging spray of carbon dioxide gas, to a metallic discharge nozzle, and then being grounded through the body of the person holding or touching the container. Rose and. Skinner (5) have described a case in which a fall of roof coal had brought down the trolley without creating a dead shot. The current was conducted in part through the loose coal to the rail, causing ignition of the coal. The fire was successfully extinguished with carbon dioxide.Dielectric data on pure carbon dioxide gas and liquid have been reported by Quinn and Jones (2). For the gas, the dielectric constants range from 1.00971 (35°C., 10 atmospheres) to 1.3072 (70°C., 151 atmospheres); for the liquid, 1.6016 (0°C., 50 atmospheres). Compared with the dielectric constant of air (1.0006, 1 atmosphere), these data, indicate that carbon dioxide in both gaseous and liquid forms is a very poor conductor of electricity, of the same order as air. 4/"

In 1995 the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) of the University of Hawaii conducted a sidescan sonar survey and sampling expedition of the submarine geology and hydrothermal systems surrounding the active volcano White Island. The island is located in the Bay of Plenty, within the geothermally active Taupo Volcanic Zone off-shore of the North Island of New Zealand, and is the site of numerous shallow-water hydrothermal systems. The survey system, an EdgeTech DF1000 sonar, was a dual frequency 100 kHz & 500 kHz sonar capable of imaging the seafloor at better than 1 m resolution and possibly detecting gas bubbles within the water column. Sidescan imagery clearly shows sand channels, debris slumps, submarine landslides, and volcanic ridges all around the island to roughly 800 meters offshore. However, analyses of the both raw and processed acoustic data indicate that the sonar was not able to image any of the shallow-water hydrothermal gas seeps known to exist around the island. Vents were located using a commercial fish finder and knowledge from local tour guides and divers. Eleven gas samples from three different sites were collected by divers for analysis of chemical and isotopic composition. Rock samples were collected from thirteen underwater outcrops for correlation with existing data on subarial island flows sampled by previous investigators. Thin sections and XRF analysis were done for each rock to determine mineral assemblages along with major and trace elements, which were used to tie submarine samples to specific subarial stratigraphic layers.

The material known as coal has a highly variable composition. As a consequence, coals show a great variation in their physical and chemical properties as a function of coal rank. The situation is further complicated because the preparation engineer must deal with raw coal, as mined. This is an assemblage of coal, upwards of 30% mineral matter and, typically, several percent pyrite. The kind and amount of the mineral constituents is also highly variable from source to source. A knowledge of coal rank and source location, and the kind and amount of associated impurities, is the first step in evaluating the response of a raw coal to preparation procedures. The raw coal must first be characterized before information from one source can be extrapolated to that of another.

Underclays are associated with coals found in eastern Oklahoma. These coals are of bituminous rank and are in beds of Middle and Late Pennsylvanian age. They occur in an area of about 8,000 mi2, within the southern part of the Western Interior Coal Region. The rocks of the area consist of a thick series of sandstones, shales, underclays, coals, and limestones. There are more than 40 beds of bituminous coal in the state, but only 12 of these have been mined over large areas. The 12 are, from oldest to youngest: the lower Hartshorne, upper Hartshorne, McAlester (Stigler), upper McAlester, Cavanal, Rowe, Secor, Weir-Pittsburg, Mineral, Croweburg, Iron Post, and Dawson coals. None of the underclay associated with these coal beds is known to have been exploited commercially. Nine samples of underclay from beneath the Croweburg coal were collected over a wide area in the eastern Oklahoma coal field for evaluation. The underclays are usually shades of gray with brown or orange iron-oxide staining. Although soft and plastic in some places, they are generally hard and slickensided, and contain abundant carbonized plant fragments. Bulk chemical analyses, clay mineral identification, and ceramic tests were performed on each underclay sample. The dominant clay minerals are illite and kaolinite with some mixed-layer clays. Silica (Si02) ranges from 45.96% to 59.03% and alumina (Al2O3) varies from 14.98% to 23.60%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Re- search Center conducted the ceramic evaluations. Samples were slow fired from 1,000°C to 1,250°C in 50°C intervals. Bulk density, color, percent linear shrinkage, and percent absorption were determined for each slow fire test. All Croweburg underclay samples are best suited for building brick.

This paper is a case study using new laser-terrain-mapping technology by EagleScan, Inc., for creating topographic maps. Holnam, Inc., has used this technology to create maps and volumetric calculations of several mines in the United States. The information is superior to conventional methods through accuracy, manpower, time, and cost. Holnam, Inc., was the first cement manufacturer to use the Digital Airborne Topographic Imaging System (DATIS?). The technology uses the DATIS? to produce high-resolution terrain maps and volumetric assessments of any area. DATIS? is a mapping instrument that integrates (1) a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) instrument to measure terrain elevation using laser light, (2) a large-format digital camera, (3) a relative position Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure aircraft position, and (4) an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to measure aircraft attitude. The DATIS? can measure up to 220,000 elevation samples per mil. The system continually collects data on the aircraft's position and measures the time for each laser pulse transmission to return from the ground, giving each sample a GPS reference. The system can operate at night, in overcast sky, and during high-wind conditions and can measure terrain below vegetation cover, unlike standard aerial photography used for traditional surveying and mapping. Surveyed ground-control panels are no longer necessary with this new technology, and only one ground GPS base station located within 60 mi from the aircraft position is required. A computer elevation-point data file is created with the x, y, z coordinates of each laser elevation sample. With this file, CAD engineering programs can create topographic maps that rival products using conventional aerial mapping techniques. Volumetric measurements of stockpiles and pits are also available due to the high density of points collected from an area. This new technology radically changes the turnaround time for map users, giving a product in the format used by today's cartographers. The time line from flight to maps is measured in days instead of weeks.

This paper presents the results of a column flotation study on a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design was used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to produce a high-grade concentrate with a high recovery. A 15ppm concentration of nonionic frother was found sufficient to maximize the recovery at pH of 9.5.

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.

Excessive noise and high vibration are inherently associated with equipment used in the mining, extraction, and processing of mineral resources. High vibration degrades structural components, often leading to catastrophic failure and loss of productivity, and excessive noise can result in permanent hearing loss. In order to foster efficient utilization of the Nation's mineral resources and minimize occupational hazards associated with mineral processing, the Bureau of Mines investigated the relationship between the microstructures of carbon and alloy steels and cast irons and their damping capacities (ability to absorb vibration). Researchers measured damping capacity and other properties and investigated the effects of carburizing, spheroidizing, and annealing. The investigators found that in carbon and alloy steels, rounded colonies of fine-grained pearlite in a ferrite matrix correlate well with low damping capacity. Steel microstructures that exhibit sharp-faceted pearlite in ferrite matrix and partially or fully spheroidized cementite in ferrite show considerably higher damping. In cast irons, the lowest damping capacity is associated with nodular graphite microstructure, and the specific damping capacity (SDC) increases as the graphite micro-structure progresses from nodular to compacted to flake. Predominant ferrite in cast irons is also associated with good damping. SDC data are presented for selected carbon and alloy steels and cast irons.

THE Whitwell firebrick hot-blast stove, for furnace use, may be seen in its three, main stages of development in the accompanying drawings. Fig. 1 is the stove of 1869, the, year in which it was thoroughly tested at the Consett furnaces, England; Fig. 2, the stove of 1876 and 1877, in which it was intended to reduce the-cost by increasing the height; Fig. 3, the stove of 1880. Many modifications were made from time to time, generally in the direction of improvement, but the drawings illustrate the main features of progress. In the stove of 1869 the plan was to introduce the gas at A, and pass it up and down. between each alternate wall, the air in the reverse direction, passing in at B. The friction in this stove was so great, owing to the. restricted area of the passages and the many reversals of the gaseous current, that it was deemed imprudent to build the stoves higher than 28' 6'". Another reason was that the great importance of cleaning was carefully kept in view, and it was very difficult to operate any hand scraper even to this depth. For these reasons the 22' X 28 1/2' stove held the field for several years. A slight change made from this was to the 18' X 40' stove, where the height was increased, but the number of walls diminished. In this stove the friction was somewhat reduced, but so was the heating surface, and although it cost a little less it was not any better. The next important change, seen in Fig. 2, was by increasing the height to 60 feet and keeping the full number of walls in the stove. The heating surface and mass were much increased in proportion to the cost, and the friction decreased by alternating over and under two or more walls, instead of one, as formerly. This stove gave admirable satisfaction, but; although the proper doors were provided, it was very difficult to clean, owing to the long distance the scrapers had to traverse. Heap leaching in certain parts of the world, such as Chile's Atacama Desert, brings unique design problems in the form of possible large differential settlements of the foundation soils due to the dissolution of salts in northern Chile the soils often contain very high concentrations of soluble salts (nitrates, potassium, magnesium, and common sodium). When a leak in the liner occurs, the escaping solution dissolves these salts and triggers differential settlement. If the settlement is great enough, the geo-membrane tears, the leakage increases, triggering more differential settlement. The nitrate plants have experienced many occurrences of this phenomenon where a brine pond will undergo a sudden and complete loss of the impounded liquors. The authors present a simplified technique to quantify the differential settlement resulting from dissolution and provide a method which can be used to select a geo-membrane with suitable flexibility under axi-symmetric (multi-axial) load conditions to tolerate the predicted settlement. Peru has produced petroleum since the early seventies, the first work being in the Zorritos field, in the Province of Tumbes, adjoining Ecuador. In the early nineties, the Negritos field, in the Department of Piura, came into prominence, and by 1905 had attained an annual production of 335,160 bbl. The early development of the field was under the general direction of the London & Pacific Petroleum Co., but it is now handled by the International Petroleum Co. In 1900 and 1901, the Lobitos field became the seene of marked activity. In 1905, its total production amounted to 75,000 bbl.; it has continued to increase, as has Negritos. From 1897 to 1902, there was prospecting in the region of La Brieta (or Fernandex), on the Mancora River, about 25 to 30 km. from the coast. Small production of a heavy oil was obtained from three different sands. So far as the author knows, no work has been done in that locality since 1902. There are thus four distinct fields in the north end of the Peruvian coasta1 plain. The remaining productive locality of Peru is the Pirin or Pusi field, at the northwest end of Lake Titicaca, Department of Puno, in southern Peru. The first prospecting near Pusi was done by Brown Brothers, of Los Angeles, Calif., who obtained modest production about 1906; according to reports, activities ceased about 1914 or 1915. The maximum annual production was obtained about 1908, estimated at 76,000 barrels. Peru possesses two distinct geographic provinces in which we may look for the development of a larger oil industry; namely, the coastal plain province, and the inter-Andean plains. In the last decade, the copper industry in China has developed rapidly and attracted the world’s attention. The production capacity of refined copper has grown remarkably from 4.578 million tons in 2010 up to 9.029 million tons in 2018, accounting for about 40% of the global refined copper production. And now, China has become the biggest refined copper producer in the world. This paper summarizes the application of modern copper metallurgical technologies such as Outotec flash smelting/converting technology, Cyclone smelting technology, TSL (ISA/Ausmelt) smelting/converting technology, Jinfeng side blown smelting and Baiyin side blown smelting technology, Chifeng side blown smelting and continuous top blown converting technology, SKS bottom blowing technology, Dongying two-step smelting technology, copper electrorefining with high current density, etc. in China’s copper industry, analyzes and compares the characteristics of those technologies and presents the great efforts of China’s copper smelters in adapting to the increasingly strict emission standards and improving economic benefits of copper smelters. INTRODUCTION China has been the biggest refined copper producer in the world for many years. China produced million tons of refined copper in 2018, accounting for 40% of the copper smelting production in the world, and of which, roughly, 70% of the copper concentrate was imported, mainly from Chile, Peru and Australia. ICSG (International Copper Study Group, 2017) shows clearly the position of top 20 countries of copper production and copper mine production (Figures 1 and 2). Blast Furnaces, Reverb Furnaces and Electric Furnaces dominated China Copper Smelting for quite long time till 1980s. The first modern copper smelting technology (flash copper smelting) was introduced into China in 1980s, then followed by Noranda, Ausmelt and ISA. Since then, China copper smelting technology stepped into modern time. Since 2000, old processes (Blast Furnace, Reverb Furnaces and Electric Furnaces) were phased out and replaced by modern smelting technologies. China Copper Production has been increasing dramatically (Figure 3).

At the present time Climax Uranium Company recovers vanadium oxide from carnotite type uranium ores in the mill at Grand Junction, Colorado, The flowsheet of this mill is shown in Figure I. Vanadium is solubilized by a salt roast of the slime fraction of the ore and dissolution is accomplished by a water leach. The metal is precipitated from the pregnant liquor as sodium polyvanadate by heating to boiling and adjusting the pH to 3 with sulfuric acid. The sodium polyvanadate, commonly called, "red caken, is filtered, melted, and cast into thin flakes. This fused flaked vanadium oxide is the material which is packaged for sale. Fused vanadium oxide, marketed by Climax, contains approximately 87% V205, 7% alkali oxide, 0.08% sulfur, 0.03% phosphorus, and less than 0.5% Insoluble. This material is of a lower grade and has a higher alkali oxide content than other vanadium products offered for sale at this time. A typical analysis of a high grade vanadium oxide currently offered for sale by another company is 98% V205, 1 - 2% alkali oxide, less than 0.05% sulfur and less than 0.2% Insoluble. The only reagent consumed in the precipitation of the sodium polyvanadate is sulphuric acid. The total reagent cost is 0.58 cents per pound of vanadium oxide produced.

In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

The conversion of a successful research and development effort into a money-making business venture requires careful attention. Problems of a business nature, such as market size, product selling price, raw materials and fuel availability and cost, financing factors, local and national taxes, licensing arrangements, etc. must, of course, be considered and resolved. In addition, the technical questions involving the scale-up of pilot plant or laboratory results to the full-scale plant must be resolved in order to avoid the financial disaster that attends a major delay in the startup of a commercial facility. The very difficult and demanding task of providing the interface between the research laboratory and the profitable metals processing plant will be discussed with examples from the author's extensive experience. After I had accepted the invitation to present a paper on the above subject of the interface between R & D and production operations, I began to give some serious thought to the subject. The program chairman had told me, in conveying the invitation, that what the committee had in mind was a discussion of positive and negative, forces in that interface, based on "gray-hair" experience. I am, therefore, at least physically qualified! My first reaction was one of mild shock; after over twenty years in the direct pursuit of the conversion of research and development findings into plant operations, I had never tried to sort out my , experience into a formal system of DO'S and DON'TS for the edification of posterity. However, after a little further reflection, I realized that this carries no stigma. No one has been able to formulate such a set of rules, and it is not really very likely to be done. Particularly if they are to be practical. I shall therefore settle for a more modest goal; I will simply discuss the factors that I have come to believe are the most critical in insuring that re- search and development results are converted into successful operation.
