This paper examines several new trends in the design and application of linings for copper melting shaft furnaces including the use of large shapes, monolithic back-up linings and improved refractory engineering to significantly reduce refractory installation time, diamond saw blade costs, fuel and down-time. The net results are shown to be dramatically increased refractory service life, reusable safety linings, elimination of hot spots and lower refractory disposal costs.

El presente trabajo señala el modelo de pronóstico de la producción en Southern Perú, que va desde la caracterización geometalúrgica del mineral, los resultados de las pruebas metalúrgicas, la obtención de las ecuaciones de recuperación, el diseño de construcción de los botaderos futuros hasta los controles geometalúrgicos requeridos para su aplicación industrial. Por ello, es necesario validar las ecuaciones de recuperación para lograr una mayor confiabilidad de los pronósticos de producción. La realización de una prueba a nivel botadero piloto considerando inóculos bacterianos, aumentará el grado de confiabilidad de los pronósticos. De forma que la presencia de la actividad bacteriana es fundamental para la disolución del cobre de la calcopirita y la recuperación de cobre aumentará a medida que se favorezcan las condiciones para generar la actividad bacteriana en el mineral.

The implementation of a flow-through yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) sensor for pH measurements in high temperature and concentrated electrolyte systems relevant to hydrometallurgical processing of nickeliferous laterites is discussed. Instrumentation involved the use of a custom made flow-through titanium electrochemical cell. Accuracy and validity of the pH measurements at temperatures up to 250C were assessed using concentrated sulphate process solutions ranging from synthetic binary sulphuric acid ? water solutions to progressively multicomponent metal ? sulphate solutions simulating laterite Pressure Acid Leach conditions. The measurements were also compared with theoretical models using recently obtained thermodynamic data. A difference of ±0.25 pH units was observed between measured and calculated pH values at temperatures. This is an acceptable difference given that these are the first direct high temperature pH measurements ever on the concentrated acidic sulphate solutions. This result is encouraging more research for the development of industrial electrochemical systems for direct pH measurements in autoclaves.

Bob Woolsey was born in 1936 in the state of Georgia and grew up to be a man of great integrity, vitality, wisdom and charm, totally neutral on matters of race, gender, and religion. A true Southern Gentleman in every sense of the word. His passing on July 9, 2008, the victim of an automobile collision, left an empty space in the hearts of his family, and his many friends and colleagues throughout the globe. The posthumous award of the Moore Medal of the International Marine Minerals Society, to Dr. J. Robert Woolsey for Excellence in the Development of Marine Minerals, is a well deserved tribute to this man who spent the last 30 years of his professional career heavily involved in research and development of marine minerals on an international basis. He first came to my attention in Burma in 1979 where, as a newly appointed technical advisor to the United Nations Development Program Offshore Exploration for Tin, I had to fill the shoes of an almost legendary figure "Dr. Bob", who accompanied by his wife Maxine had spent the previous two years initiating the program. Bob had planned to completion the construction in Singapore of a unique drilling vessel the RV Sea Drill, a spud anchored, twin-hulled barge, mounted with a Becker Drill, and designed for sampling alluvial tin deposits in the coastal waters of the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea, off Tenasserim. He had also designed and built, with the help of his side -kick Bruce Jernigan, a barge mounted dressing plant for reducing and concentrating the drill samples. The adventures of Dr. Bob in transporting the equipment to the drilling site in monsoon weather and the transfer of the drill barge from the Malaysian port of Ranong across the strait to Victoria Point in Burma with a mutinous crew will remain in the hearts and minds of his Burmese colleagues for many a long year. On his return to the States he joined, in 1980, the faculty of the University of Mississippi (UM) as assistant Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering. His prior experience in private industry and the United Nations had focused on marine mineral resources and related environmental engineering projects in Africa, South America, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific as well as south east Asia, working with dredges, mining for alluvial tin, gold, diamonds and industrial minerals. He continued to work in the area of marine minerals at UM, making a name for himself as Director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI).

Research was conducted at a western coal mine on a wide variety of underground mining vehicles to develop testing procedures for portable instrumentation monitoring of tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon dioxide (CO2) carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO). DPM was measured using the Emissions Measurement Appa¬ratus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU), and an ECOM-KL five-gas analyzer was used to measure gaseous tailpipe concentrations. Baseline concentrations of the tailpipe pollutants were measured using vehicle systems to load the engine. Concentrations before and after the water scrubber were measured and water scrubber efficiencies were estimated by calculation. Field measurement procedures were established. Heavy-duty vehicles with automatic transmissions were loaded using the torque converter to stall the engine. Consistent engine loading for light-duty vehicles with manual transmissions involved placing the transmission in neutral and adjusting the throttle to maintain a constant engine speed of 2,500 rpm. Tailpipe CO2 concentrations for Caterpillar 3306 and 3304 engines were compared to laboratory CO2 data from Caterpillar and MSHA to help determine if engine settings were correctly adjusted for operation at high altitudes. (Perfect agreement between the mine vehicle tailpipe and laboratory measurements would not be expected because of the differences in the test conditions.) DPM concentrations for light-duty vehicles ranged from about 20 to 160 mg/m3, and one light-duty vehicle averaged near 1,000 mg/m3. DPM concentrations for heavy-duty vehicles ranged from about 55 to 200 mg/m3. Widely ranging DPM concentrations for a particular vehicle type reflect the state of maintenance, fuel rate settings and different engine loading procedures as well as differences between samples collected upstream and downstream of the waterscrubber. The calculated DPM removal efficiencies due to the water scrubber varied considerably between vehicles, ranging from 13% to 51%. Calculations indicate that, under worst-case conditions, very large reductions in DPM may be required to meet the proposed DPM PEL of 0.15 mg/m3, even on vehicles with water scrubbers. In-mine ambient air studies, which are needed to actually measure the impact of the tailpipe concentrations on the work environment and the effect of mine ventilation on the dilution of DPM were not done in this first set of tests.

Following a period or small-scale activity a joint venture was formed between Ceramco Limited of New Zealand and Georgia Kaolin Company of USA. The initial concept was to process clays for the paper industry but it soon, became apparent that insufficient markets were attainable for the grades of china clay that could be produced for an economic unit. Ceramco Limited acquired the Georgia Kaolin interest in 1975 and proceeded to search for a market, of markets, that would: 1. utilise the unique properties of the product, and 2. enable a viable operation to be created. This paper describes the mineral deposits, the process, the properties of the product, and the marketing methods of New Zealand China Clays.

Mining ‘as usual’, until the most recent decades has resulted in limited landform planning and a general lack of mine waste landform design. Material characterisation, mine planning and dedicated professionals undertaking these tasks were rarely available or in place at the majority of mines. This has led to landform instability, erosion, sediment and poor quality water emanating from mine landforms. In many cases rehabilitation and reclamation failed and these sites have ‘landform features’ that are difficult to relinquish or leave and have little or no apparent land use. In many cases mined landscapes around the world have resulted in a less functional and degraded environment, with deleterious impacts on surrounding ecosystems.This situation is now slowly being addressed, as global companies, academics and practitioners and their organisations have started to exploit the ideas from an integration of earth sciences and mining through the application of planning software dedicated to the design of landforms.This development has had its genesis primarily in the United States. We suggest that process has been driven, in recent decades, by the application of resources in response to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), (USA Congress 11 December 1980) and other mine reclamation legislation enacted by federal and states regulators in the USA. The combining impact has seen a huge transfer of capital back from the public purse and ‘potentially responsible parties’, into abandoned mines to affect control, remediation, and reclamation/rehabilitation of those mines.Given this investment in rehabilitation and reclamation, people engaging in the business of landform planning have had the opportunity to address landform reclamation of historic and active sites. The skills of engineers and scientists with improved technology, waste rock characterisation and modelling tools have been combined resulting in the evolution of landform design and in mine planning of active mines. This has delivered cost-effective, sustainable mine closure designs for over 30 years. Integration of mine design with an understanding of geomorphic principals and the natural landscape, coupled with waste and soil characterisation, yield a positive result. Recently work has been applied across large and small-scale projects by companies. As these processes develop, ideas and concepts are evolving that active mines, or mines in the early planning stages, could use to help reduce double handling, and in the long run reduce overall project and closure costs, more effectively attain the desired final land use, and enhance the industry’s reputation and licence to operate.CITATION:Leidich, T,?Lacy, H?and Van?Zyl,?M,?2014. A series of four coal combustion experiments was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) in the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to evaluate the response of fire sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. An optical path smoke sensor alarmed earlier than a point type diffusion mode ionization smoke sensor which alarmed prior to a CO alert value of 5 PPM above ambient. The presence of steady state diesel emissions resulted in a decrease in the optical smoke sensor analog output voltage signal by less than 1.4 pct for the three coal fire experiments in which a diesel engine was operating, whereas the ionization smoke sensor output decreased between 10.8 and 26.7 pct after the initial surge of the diesel engine. A commercial diesel discriminating fire sensor did not alarm for a fire in the one experiment for which it was used. The results of the experiments demonstrated that an optical path smoke sensor might be used to detect a coal fire under the experimental conditions considered of starting a diesel engine followed by a slowly developing coal fire.

Although known since 1902, the Capitan iron deposits have not been tined, mainly because of the low grade of the ore. Only a small amount of exploratory work has been done since the discovery. C. H. Johnson, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines in New Mexico in 1942-4, visited the property; as a result, preliminary sampling of the property was done in 1943.2/ Owing to the results of this preliminary work, an extensive development program by wagon drilling was planned and executed early in 1944. Equipment available at that time was limited in the depths that could be reached; and as geologic studies indicated the possibility that other limestone beds below the surface might have been replaced by iron minerals, a supplementary development program by churn drilling to reach greater depths was prosecuted in late 1947 and early 1948, with the author as project engineer.

"0 ne of the incentives that led to the development of non-electric shock tube initiation systems was the desire within the industry to improve detonator safety. And to the extent that nonelectric initiators are immune to the hazards of stray current and radio frequency energy found on normal blast sites, an advancement in safety has been accomplished. However, as a cautionary note, it is important to realize that there are still many hazards associated with any initiation system. While some of these hazards may differ from those associated with electric detonators, others are identical to those associated with any type of initiation system. For instance, contrary to what some uninformedblasters may believe, lightning remains a hazard when using nonelectric initiation as well as electric initiation."

The Genesis gold mine, owned and operated by Newmont Gold Co., is located in section 31, T36N, R50E within Eureka County, Nevada along the Carlin Trend of sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposits. Mining commenced in 1986 with present mineable and stockpiled reserves listed at 17,711,000 tons of ore averaging 0.073 opt Au, totalling 1.292 million ounces of gold. Ore is primarily hosted within Devonian calcareous siltstones that have been subjected to intensive argillization and silicification episodes. Additional mineralogic and geochemical features of the Genesis ores include enrichment in iron-oxides, kaolinite, arsenic and antimony; the ore zone is relatively depleted in carbonates and sulfides as a result of supergene and hypogene oxidation. Two major structural zones enhanced the permeability of the siltstones and served as the main hydrothermal conduits within the deposit. Prior to the main ore stage, the host rocks were subjected to metasomatic effects caused by emplacement of the Juro-Cretaceous Goldstrike granodiorite pluton and associated dikes and sills. Micron-size gold occurs in clays, micro-crystalline quartz, and in arsenical complexes. Non-oxidized carbonaceous and sulfidic ores and silica-locked ores result in variable preg-robbing and refractory responses during cyanide recovery. Selective mining and milling has resulted in the successful treatment of the Genesis orebody.

Within the Northern Pennine Orefield, England, intersections of fluorite veins are generally richest in ore, and their recognition enables investigation of the ore potential of the intersecting bodies. A method, based on routine analysis of fluorite for yttrium, has been used with success in mines of the district to predict the location of intersections in partially developed fluorite-bearing ore bodies. This short note is intended as a brief introduction; the details of United Kingdom applications are to be published at a later date. Geology The Northern Pennine Orefield is the second largest fluorspar-producing region in Britain. The associated minerals galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, barite, and witherite have all been extensively worked in the past but, with the exception of a single barytes mine, all of these operations are now abandoned. Galena alone is recovered as a byproduct of fluorspar beneficiation. At the present time two companies are producing about 38,000 tpy of fluorspar from high grade vein ore bodies, and a number of concerns are actively prospecting in old lead workings. The mineralization is localized in veins and replacement flats within favorable lithologies in an alternating limestone, sandstone, shale sequence. Since the thickness of individual beds is not great (generally less than 20 m), vein bodies tend to be ribbon-shaped, with length greatly exceeding width and height (Dunham). They thus present difficult exploration targets for conventional diamond drilling techniques. Ore grade varies greatly along the veins, which can change rapidly in character from mineral stained fault gouge to massive mineral bodies up to 10 m in width. It has been known for a very long time that the richer ore bodies tend to be associated with vein intersections in favorable beds. It is assumed that vein fissure intersections provided vertical channelways through which hot ore-bearing brines were able to ascend from deeper cavities in the sequence. Thus investigation of intersections at other horizons generally yields further ore bodies. Technique The relative concentration of yttrium in fluorite is a good indicator, in the North Pennines, of the direction of flow of mineralizing fluids. In all of the ore bodies so far studied in detail in this region, the concentration of yttrium increases markedly in the direction of vein intersections that are believed to have acted as feeder zones to the remainder of the bodies. The reason for this relationship is probably connected with the degradation of soluble rare earths-fluoride complexes by the changes in various physicochemical parameters of the hydrothermal fluids as they entered the ore body cavities from the feeder zones. The simultaneous release of free fluoride ions also contributed to the increased ore values in these intersection zones. Yttrium values in fluorite taken from a longitudinal traverse of the western ore body, Redburn mine, Rookhope, are plotted in [Fig. 1.] The position of a major vein branch and three cross veins are clearly indicated by yttrium maxima. The cross veins themselves contain up to 2.5 m of low grade fluorspar ore. The exact positions of B and C were unknown previous to the geochemical survey. Similar results have been obtained for several other veins and ore bodies in the area. Clean fluorspar was collected as bulk samples from within 300 mm of the vein wall and, since the vein infilling is simple, with mineral growth from the walls inward, analyses of the samples are considered comparable along the length of the ore body. "The Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine area, Cochrane district, in northern Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, which has a population of 25,856, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto.The property was staked in the late summer of 1909. The original four claims were staked by Benjamin Hollinger, after whom the mine was named. Development commenced in the autumn of 1909 and mill construction in the winter of 1910. A catastrophic forest fire swept the district in 19ll, destroying the surface plant, so that the original 300-ton mill was not completed until June 1912. From that date up to December 31, 1945, 44,280,750 tons of ore have yielded 13,636,796 oz. gold and 2,613,354 oz. silver. The total value of the production has been $363,638,315.0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of quartz veins, stringer lodes, and scockworks, with associated pyritized wall-rocks. The width of individual orebodies, as exposed by mining operations, ranges from 1 to 70 feet and averaged approximately 10 feet in 1942. The vein system forms a complex pattern in a favourable zone, which in places is 6,000 feet long and 4,000 feet wide. The deepest level being developed is 5,150 feet below the surface. Few veins are persistent for long distances, although some are continuous for more than 1,000 feet longitudinally and vertically.The host rocks consist of a closely folded series of Precambrian lava flows of Keewatin age. These are schistose and hydrothermally altered, but are believed to have originally been of intermediate to basic composition. The schistosity strikes N.70°E. and dips to the south at 75° to 80°. The structure of the formations is complex, but in the principal ore-bearing zone the general dip of the flows is to the south at a slightly flatter attitude than the schistosity."

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducts a comprehensive test program on clay and shale at the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center. All samples are subjected to standard preliminary ceramic tests, which include firing formed briquets at temperatures ranging from 1,000° to 1,250° C to identify firing range and colors, and quick-firing to determine bloating characteristics. Materials that shop potential as structural products are further tested after either extrusion or dry-pressing. If the quick-fire test is positive, bulk samples can be fired in a rotary kiln to evaluate their potential as light- weight aggregate A number of miscellaneous tests also can be conducted if requested. These tests determine properties such as refractoriness (pyrometric cone equivalency), oil-bleaching characteristics, oil absorbency, viscosity for drilling-mud applications, sand-bonding properties for foundry usage, and pelletizing characteristics.

"The cyclone would have a claim to be the commonest, least understood and most abused piece of mineral processing equipment available for study by researchers. It has certainly generated its fair share of publications – 1,000 in the last 60 years would be a fair estimate. However this remarkable degree of interest and scale of investigation is not reflected in our understanding of how they work; cyclones are still installed inappropriately and run poorly, which suggests that there are still things to learn about this deceptively simple process.In mineral processing there are two broad classes of cyclone: the hydrocyclone, used in classification, thickening and dewatering, and the dense medium cyclone, used for concentration by density. Although rarely studied together, the laws of physics presumably apply equally to both and so it seems that there would be interesting things to learn by considering them as a single class of device. The good news is that in recent years there have been spectacular advances in the computational and measurement tools available to study these devices, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), tomography, and laser doppler anemometry (LDA), and some good progress has been made in an understanding of the fundamental principles involved.The JKMRC has made many experimental studies of hydrocyclones and DM cyclones, leading to useful empirical models. However some recent CFD and tomographic work, in association with work of other institutions, has thrown important light on the workings of these processes. Progress has also been made in novel designs of cyclone to achieve improved separating efficiency, based on an attack on the subprocesses believed to contribute to inefficient operation. This paper describes the work to date.Modelling of the dense medium and classifying cyclone was conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Three phase simulations of the dense medium application (air/water/medium) showed appropriate medium segregation effects but over-predicted the level of segregation compared to segregation measured by gamma-ray tomography. This is believed to be because the basic Algebraic Slip mixture model in Fluent does not model any back-mixing of the dispersed phase due to turbulence."

"Totten Mine return air raise was designed with two parallel fans equipped with silencers to reduce the noise emitted from the outlets into the environment. As development and production of the mine progressed through the past years, the silencer system needed to be upgraded, and additional maintenance strategies have been necessary to meet the regulatory noise limits enforced by the province of Ontario. The current mine plan will require the fans to reach the upper limit of their capacity by Q1 2019. To achieve this operational target, additional silencing capability has been required and Totten Mine has explored alternatives to further extend the noise silencing capacity available considering the current constraints at the mine site. The alternatives included a new silencer baffle design and a new layout that have allowed doubling the length of the silencer system. Using acoustic measurement data collected on several occasions, this paper presents and discusses the performance of the various silencing systems which have been installed on the return air fans at Totten Mine.INTRODUCTION Vale Canada Limited’s Totten Mine is a base metal, underground mine extracting nickel and copper, situated in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario. The mine initiated operations at the end of 2013, and is equipped with two main return air fans and two main fresh air fans located on surface. Both fresh air and return air fans are set in a parallel arrangement to operate as integrated units and are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to allow for the remote modification of their operating set point, usually between 600 to 880 rpm, depending on the mine’s requirements. The main return air raise (RAR) fans are also equipped with dissipative baffle silencers to attenuate the noise emitted to the environment. Approximately four years ago, acoustical measurements conducted to verify compliance with the applicable regulatory criteria, and respond to noise concerns from neighboring residents, concluded that the sound emissions of the main return air raise exceeded the noise design parameters. The acoustic tones of the fans were audible offsite, at a residential location, approximately 9 km northeast of the mine site. The elevated sound levels and offsite audibility was due to degradation of the original discharge silencers from moisture and particulate being drawn from underground workings and passing through the silencer baffles. The audibility was also due to an outlet directivity pattern which directed noise towards the residential location."

Two different groups of mechanisms have been considered in the past to explain the effects of chemical additives on grinding. While one group of explanations is based upon alterations of surface and mechanical properties of the individual particles, the other group depends mainly on the arrangement of particles and their flow in suspensions. In this paper some of the past work on grinding aids is reviewed and attrition grinding of a commercially important ceramic material, zirconia (stabilized with yttria) with polyaaylic acid as grinding aid, is studied in order to determine the effect of the aid on the ground product itself. It was observed that even though polyaaylic acid did cause a drastic decrease in the viscosity of the pulp, it did not have any major effect on the grinding of zirconia at least up to 2000 ppm and only minor detrimental effect above it. Importantly, complexation by the polymer was found to cause extraction of yttrium into solution with possibly significant changes in the surface chemical composition of the product.
