THE Jones Mine (or Johannes Mine, as it was originally called, from a former proprietor), situated near Springfield, in the township of Caernarvon, Berks County, Pennsylvania, has long been known as a large deposit of magnetic iron ore, associated with more or less copper pyrites, and with malachite and chrysocolla. It occurs in a belt of soft schistose rocks which rest upon the Laurentian gneiss of the Welsh Mountain, and to the northward are soon concealed by the unconformably overlying Mesozoic sandstone of the region. These metalliferous strata belong to the Primal slates of Rodgers, which, in many other localities in this region, include similar deposits of iron ores associated with more or less copper, and often accompanied by chloritic and argillaceous schists, and, more rarely, by serpentine and small lenticular masses of crystalline limestone. To this same horizon belong the iron ores of Boyertown, Fritz's Island, and Roudenbusch, near Reading, Wheatfield, Cornwall, and Dillsburg (all of which are found along the northern border of the Mesozoic belt of * By the kind permission of Dr. F. A 300 m deep test hole at Ontario Hydro's Darlington nuclear plant site, 65 km east of Toronto, was used to determine the state of stress in the Paleozoic limestones (O-22O m depth) and the Precambrian granitic gneiss (220-300 m). The results of the hydrofracturing measurements indicated a state of high horizontal stress along the depth of boring and a consistent orientation of principal stresses in each geologic unit. These results were confirmed by a borehole TV camera survey, and by overcoring tests. The magnitudes and orientations of the measured in situ stresses were used in a feasibility study of siting an underground nuclear plant, and in particular in the geotechnical design of proposed reactor caverns in Precambrian rocks. Their implications on cavern stability under operational and accident conditions were analytically studied, taking into consideration the potential superposition of thermomechanical stresses under loss-of-coolant condition, and the possibility of thermal spalling in the host rock.

Inmet is 100% owner of Minera Panama, a world-class copper project that is currently in the feasibility phase in north-central Panama. Panama has limited experience with modern mining, limited mining capacity, and the project context involves significant social, environmental and political complexity. The Project area is remote with recent in-migration of latino and indigenous people, informal and small-scale mining, local subsistence populations and considerable biodiversity value, coupled with a complex jurisdictional setting. In short, it is increasingly the kind of project mining companies are taking on because the easy projects have already been developed. With such challenging conditions, anticipating and managing social risks is critical to effective project management. To this end, between August 2007 and the third quarter of 2009 Inmet seconded Monkey Forest Consulting Ltd to the project to assist Minera Panama in building and implementing an effective, early phase external relations strategy. The team was also tasked to find and develop a locally based team that could sustain success through project development and into operations. Today?s presentation was created by Inmet and Monkey Forest and describes some of the lessons learned in implementing an effective early phase process for managing social issues.

Uranium, discovered in 1949 at Rum Jungle, 40 miles south of Darwin, N. T., was mined and processed to U3O8 from 1954 to 1963 by the Territory Enterprises Pty. Ltd. TEP is a Government company managed by Conzinc RioTinto of Australia Ltd. During this period, the uranium oxide was sold under contract to the Combined Development Agency, a joint Anglo-American uranium procurement agency. When the contract terminated in 1963, more than 31/4 million pounds of uranium oxide had been delivered which had been mined from three open pits. Copper ores, found with the uranium, necessitated the addition of a copper circuit to the concentrator. Copper concentrates containing 12,981 pounds of copper were also produced. Rum Jungle was the largest single industrial enterprise in the Northern Territories and, as such, was an important economic and social factor in this sparsely settled tropical region. To stretch out the life of this enterprise for the above reasons, and with the added possibility that the uranium market might improve, the Commonwealth mined out and stockpiled 650,000 tons of ore containing 9.6 lb of U,O, per ton, which is sufficient to sustain the treatment plant at 200 tpd until about 1971. In the plant, uranium is recovered from solution by solvent ex- traction. Current output is being stockpiled pending suitable market conditions.

THE hall of the Western Iron and Nail Associations having kindly been placed at the service of the Institute, the opening session was held at 3 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, May 13th, with an attendance of about one hundred and twenty-five members. Mr. William Metcalf, of Pittsburgh, read an address of welcome on behalf of the Local Committee of Arrangements, to which President E. B. Coxe responded. The following papers were then read and discussed : Regenerative Stoves; a Sketch of their History and Notes on their Use, by John M. Hartman, of Philadelphia. Some Curious Phenomena Observed on Making a Test of a Piece of Bessemer Steel, by William Kent, of Pittsburgh. On the Use of Determining Slag Densities in Smelting, by Thomas Macfarlane, of Wyandotte, Michigan. After the reading of these papers each member was presented by the Local Committee with a schedule of excursions, a specially prepared map of Pittsburgh and surroundings, and a directory of industrial works, all tastefully bound, and also with a metal badge bearing the seal of the Institute, to be worn on the excursions. Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.

Minproc Engineers has carried out the design construction and commissioning of thirty two process plants in the period 1978-87. Twenty eight are gold silver recovery plants, and of these twenty two were gold alone and six were gold and silver. In most plants carbon was used for gold adsorption. Desorption has been carried out using the USBM Homestake method, the Anglo American Research Laboratories method, and the Micron Methanol method. Electrowinning has utilised steel wool, stainless steel wool, and aluminium cathodes. Electrorefining using polished stainless steel cathodes is practised. This paper summarises the experience gained in these operations

In the fall of 1993, construction was completed on a state of the art industrial waste water treatment plant at Asarco's East Helena Lead Smelter. Purpose of the plant was to remove arsenic and metals using hydroxide precipitation. Completing of the plant culminated a lengthy process of laboratory bench-scale test work, engineering, construction, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversight. Unfortunately, the effiuent requirements for the plant were made significantly more stringent as construction was rearing completion. As a result, optimization activities were initiated to determine and implement measures to substantially improve effiuent quality so the new discharge limits could be met. These activities consisted of acquiring a thorough understanding of process chemistry and plant operations, and developing simple, practical methods of automating unit operations associated with the treatment plant. Implementation of these modifications in the second half of 1996 will not only significantly improve the constancy and reliability of treatment plant operations, but also result in operating cost savings and reduced need for increased operator attention at capacity flows, plus allow the treatment plant to meet the new discharge limits.

The hacienda Sauceda is one of the largest and finest haciendas in the vicinity of the City of Zacatecas, Mexico, and is said to reduce ores by the Patio process more cheaply than any other establishment. It receives its supply of ore from the San Acacio mine. This mine has been for some time, like most of the Zacatecas mines, out of bonanza, and yields, at present, ore of rather low grade. The silver occurs principally as silver-glance, ruby-silver and native silver, associated with pyrites of iron and copper, and some galena and zinc-blende, in a gangue of pure quartz, which takes the form of amythyst whenever the ore is of high grade. All the ore, as it comes from the mine, is broken by hand into small pieces, and sorted before it is delivered to the hacienda. Here it is first crushed dry in Chili mills, and then ground wet in arrastras to an impalpable powder. The sulphurets not decomposed in the patio process are separated in the settlers from the tailings and concentrated by hand. By roasting them in a reverberatory furnace with carbonate copperores, "magistral" is obtained. All machinery is driven by mulepower.

The supply of clean copper ores, which have high copper concentration and low impurities like arsenic, has declined year by year. Therefore, both mine and smelter sides have to consider how to remove impurities like arsenic. We focus herein on arsenic as an impurity because it is an extremely important issue from the environmental point of view. Approximately 150,000 t of arsenic is input into the copper industry every year. A small part of it is mainly treated in the smelting side. For instance, Ministro Hales Limited, which is a mining corporation in Chile, has performed the calcination process to remove arsenic from ore with high-arsenic content. In the process, flue gas is washed by water, and the final residue is treated by a hydrometallurgical process. Many processes for arsenic removal in various stages have been proposed, and several bottlenecks exist to achieve it. One of the difficulties encountered is getting an assessment of the process, which depends on the countries and/or areas of operation. The standardization of the assessment procedure will be desired in the near future to keep the same environment standards all over the world, and now is the time to start making discussions on this matter. This will be the first step in making an international assessment procedure for arsenic treatment in the copper industry. INTRODUCTION Using the term “sustainable development” without any scientific basis can give people a false sense of security. Engineers and scientists must analyze the total mass flow of energy and materials and estimate local drain on the environment as well as the global impact of a particular industrial activity to ensure sustainability on this planet. The operations of the mining and smelting industries have a strong effect on the environment even if they provide useful materials for human beings. The copper mining and smelting industries have brought about serious environmental problems in the past. For example, the Ashio mine pollution caused big damage to the agricultural sector near the Ashio area in Japan in the late 19th century. One of the most serious problems at that time was SO2 emission because copper ore is sulfide, and the smelting process basically results to sulfur oxidation. The resource balance from a copper smelter in a year, assuming a total production of 16 million tons, can be summarized as follows: discarded minerals, 30 billion tons; sulfur, 16 million tons; iron oxide, 8 million tons; additional smaller amounts of other metals, electricity, and fuel.

Stress corrosion is defined and certain examples are illustrated. A number of test methods, to determine the resistance of materials to stress corrosion, are being developed at Wright Field. The criterion as to the validity of a method is stated. Three types of specimens and the method of stressing each type are described. Five different corrosive conditions are set forth. The results of tests to date, although too few for any general conclusions to be arrived at, are presented. The program for the continuation of the investigation is indicated. A bibliography is included. The development of the method of loading a cantilever-type specimen, so that a nearly constant stress at a large deflection may be realized, is presented as Appendix I.

The Red-Ash colliery was the scene, March 6, 1900, of an explosion by which some fifty men were killed or wounded, and much property was injured or destroyed. On March 19th, the earliest date at which entrance was practicable, I examined the mine with the view of determining the extent, cause and point of origin of the explosion, and with the permission of Mr. F. Howald, the manager, and the owners of the property, for whom the examination was made, I present in this paper some results of that examination, comprising the essential portions of my report to them. Location and Plan of the Mine. The Red-Ash colliery, situated on the south side of New river, next below the Rush Run mine, with which the underground workings are connected, is a drift-mine, the entrance to which is on a slope, about 500 ft. above the river. (Fig. 1 is a plan of the workings, in which the points where human bodies were found are designated by numbers.)

"This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum’s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill – a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was “proof of concept” and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years.Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity – this paper describes the projects’ roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs."

Foundation design and construction in Boston has changed dramatically during the past 10 years. Prior to 1985, the primary foundation element in Boston, where deep foundations are required, was driven end-bearing piles. Since 1985, drilled or excavated high capacity foundation elements have been utilized more frequently. This paper will provide a historic perspective of their use and a summary of design parameters for elements installed and founded in the bedrock. TOPOGRAPHY Boston was founded in 1630 by the Massachusetts Bay Company of John Winthrop and his hearty band of Puritans. The settlement was chosen for: ? its safe harbor, ? abundant source of fresh water, and ? peninsula setting offering protection of the ocean on almost all sides with high ground for fortification. These three factors were a direct result of past geologic processes that created the Boston Basin by erosion of the soft bedrock underlying this area as compared to the harder granite rock to the north, west and south. As the glacial ice sheets melted and moved northward, various soil types were deposited. During ice sheet re-advancement the hills and islands of Boston took on their precolonial shapes. The Trimont, consisting of Beacon, Mt. Vernon and Pemberton Hill, rose to 150 ft above sea level with the smaller Copps and Fort Hill to the north and south.

As a result of high fuel prices and substantial haul distances or vertical lift from pits, the development of large inpit crushing and conveying systems at many open pit operations has occurred over the last decade.The basic criteria that has to be met is that the material is reduced in size to be conveyable. Generally this requires a top size of less than 300 mm.

Theoretical and experimental investigations of a constant pressure gravity drainage system are reported. Experimental data are presented to show that recovery to gas breakthrough by gravity drainage is inversely proportional to rate. The gravity drainage reference rate, which is numerically equal to the so-called "maximum theoretical rate of gravity drainage" is shown to have no particular significance from a recovery standpoint. Before this rate can be used as a basis of comparison for recoveries, it is necessary that the relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics and displacing fluid viscosities be identical for the systems compared. A method is presented by which accurate prediction of the performance of a gravity drainage system can be made. Close agreement between experimental and calculated drainage performance shows that steady state relative permeability and static capillary pressure data can be used to describe fluid displacement behavior. The very wide range of liquid recoveries before gas breakthrough which result from production rate variation alone demonstrates the importance of this factor in planning depletion of a gravity drainage reservoir. Calculated results are presented which show that little additional recovery can be expected from a high pressure gravity drainage system between the times of gas breakthrough and attainment of such high gas/liquid ratios as to make further pressure maintenance impractical. INTRODUCTION It bas been recognized for some time that gravity forces play an important part in the recovery of oil from some types of reservoirs. Field experience has shown that under certain conditions, gravity drainage can result in very high oil recov- eries. Qualitative reasoning has led most engineers to the general conclusions that: (1) Where gravity drainage is important, the reservoir pressure should be maintained by gas injection at the crest of the structure to prevent shrinkage of the oil in place and to keep a low viscosity so the oil can drain at the fastest possible rate. (2) Recovery by gravity drainage is rate sensitive. A survey of the literature indicates that while considerable work has been done on the effects of gravity in oil production problems, no satisfactory method of calculating the performance of gravity drainage reservoirs has been reported.1,2,3,4,5 In the absence of any proven method of calculating reservoir performance, the level at which pressure should be maintained and the rate of production for most efficient operation has been open to debate. The limits and general character of the recovery us rate relationships are apparent from the following: As rates of production approach zero, oil will drain by virtue of its own weight fast enough that the saturation distribution is always approximately the same as the original static capillary distribution. That is, at the gas-oil contact the liquid saturation goes from 100 per cent to a value of perhaps 10 to 30 per cent in a very short distance, so that as production continues. a relatively sharp gas-oil contact moves down-structure, leaving a very low residual oil saturation in the originally oil saturated zone. At very high rates of production, the oil that drains by virtue of its own weight is negligible and recovery will approach that of a horizontal gas drive, leaving a much higher residual oil saturation. At intermediate rates of production. recovery should be between these extreme*. Despite the lack of quantitative methods, tentative agreement had been reached on the question of optimum producing rate. It has been generally concluded that rather sharp decrease in recovery would occur at rates of production above the "maximum rate of gravity drainage" and hence this rate should not be exceeded. Noise is one of the most pervasive health hazards in mining. A compilation of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) noise survey data for Fiscal year 1990 shows that approximately 40% of the total samples taken for longwall occupations exceeded the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 100% [Gigliotti et al. 1991]. In order to properly determine workers’ exposures on longwall coal mining systems, it is necessary to provide accurate baseline measurements for these mining systems. This research was designed to develop guidelines and test procedures for identifying all noise sources that are major contributors to the underground noise exposure of longwall coal mining system workers. Once the high noise sources are identified, promising engineering controls can be tested and evaluated to reduce the noise of the sources. The measurement system used to analyze the noise sources included stationary dosimeters in a documented repeatable pattern and a time-motion study of the cutting cycle and operator’s work cycle. Significant results from the underground measurements show that the highest sound levels recorded are at the stageloader discharge segment and tailpiece controls and remained at about the same level throughout the test.

The highly-mineralized 43,700-ha Rapid River study area, on the southeast side of Hells Canyon Wilderness and west of the village of Cuprum, in Adams County, western-Idaho, was investigated in 1992 by the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) in conjunction with its Idaho Land Assessment Program. The 1992 study updated data gathered during the USBM's 1974-76 Wilderness investigation. The studies consisted of the evaluation of 61 mineralized sites and the estimations of tonnages, grades, and minability of these sites. Most of the sites studied are in two mineralized locales--Windy Ridge and Jackley Mountain. A few isolated sites, peripheral to the two locales, were also examined. The 61 sites contained more than 340 mine and prospect workings, including about 10,300 meters (34,000 feet) of underground workings, plus 134 drill holes.

In 1954, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited began the program of deepening the Falconbridge mine workings for 2,000 feet below the bottom, or 4025, level in order to provide twelve new levels for production. Involved in this program were a production-sized internal shaft, .crushing, pumping and hoisting installations, the integration of the new shaft operations with those of existing shafts, and considerations of ventilation requirements and ground support at depth. This paper describes the major items of equipment, and the depth development of No. 9 shaft as a whole, and also emphasize the planning phases of the program. The factors involved and reasons for the equipment and layouts chosen are given. Introduction and History THIS paper describes the planning and development of that portion of the Falconbridge mine between the 4025 and 6050 mining levels. This mine, the oldest of several being operated by Falcon-bridge Nickel Mines Limited in the Sudbury district, has been a continuous producer for over thirty years.
