The efficiency of a coal mine ventilation circuit is usually measured by the ratio of the sum of the face quantities divided by the quantity supplied by the fans. Other types of systems use the power delivered to the power supplied to measure efficiency. This paper argues the case that the current measure may be inadequate and that by also looking at the power ratio, ventilation may be better managed. Problems associated with failing ventilation systems would be highlighted earlier so that crisis management could be avoided.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines used a contact drilling strategy with short-collared assemblies in order to rotary drill long horizontal methane drainage holes in the Beckley Coalbed near Glen Daniel, WV. By decreasing the thrust, and increasing the rotation of the drill bit when in contact with the roof and floor rock, assemblies with 1-ft (0.3-m), 10-ft (3- m), and 144 (43-m) long collars were made in deflect and stay in the coalbed. Successful application of this procedure resulted in holes drilled full length in coal with the original assembly including bit. The test assemblies deflected away from the original bearings of the holes during drilling and arced. Four holes were drilled to depths ranging from 478 ft (145.7 m) before the strategy was developed, to 4,034 ft (1,230 m) when the strategy was applied. Total length of the holes in coal was 8,590 ft (2,618 m). After 577 days the total methane captured by the holes was 221,600,000 ft? (6,276,000 m3). The methane flow rate peaked at 805,000 ft3/d (22,798 m3/d), then decreased to stabilize at 670,000 ft?/d (18,974 m3/d) after 6 months.

Leach water management is one of the few areas in dump leaching subject to operator control. As such, it is of considerable importance. Theoretical considerations indicate that high leach solution application rates are inefficient in washing solubilized copper from dumps. The high rates cause unnecessary dilution of copper values, raising unit recovery costs. Use of excessive amounts of leach solution also cools dumps, resulting in reduced leaching rates. This paper reviews leach solution application methods and details the results of field tests run to determine the benefits and feasibility of low versus high application rate techniques of applying water to dump surfaces.

Widespread high-calcium (HC) limestones in New Mexico and adjoining areas, are low in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds that would be deleterious for usage in sulfur removal. In southwest New Mexico, southeast Arizona, and adjoining parts of Mexico, limestones in the thick Mississippian Escabrosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, and Cretaceous U-Bar units are HC as are strata in the Mississippian Lake Valley, Pennsylvanian formations, Permian Hueco, and parts of the Permian Capitan Limestone of south-central and southeast New Mexico and west Texas. In north-central and central New Mexico, many limestones in the Pennsylvanian Madera Formation are HC as are some of the Cenozoic travertines. In northwest New Mexico, where the present-day mine-mouth coal- fired power plants occur, there are no HC limestones, but to the north in southwest Colorado some beds of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and Pennsylvanian Hermosa Formations are HC. HC limestones considered contain at least 95 percent calcium carbonate and less than 3 to 5 percent magnesium carbonate. Limits for other impurities are alumina, 1 percent; silica, 2 percent; sulfur 0.05 percent; phosphorous, 0.02 percent; and iron oxide, about 1 percent. Chemical and physical requirements differ slightly depending upon the ultimate use.

This paper presents tunnel design considerations for the SR75/282 Transportation Corridor Project in Coronado, California. The project is managed by the City of Coronado in cooperation with Caltrans and the US Navy and may include a one-mile long twin-tunnel section with two options: a 36.5 foot diameter twin-bored tunnel or a twin cut-and-cover box. The alignment crosses the Coronado Fault, and design provisions were needed at the fault crossing to maintain life safety and prevent rapid inundation of the tunnel in the event of fault rupture. These provisions are discussed along with considerations related to liquefaction and ground shaking. The project is currently in the planning stage with construction to start around 2012.

A modified falling ball technique for measuring the viscosity of liquids is described. It consists of recording the weight vs. time of a crucible holding the liquid of unknown viscosity, as a solid ball, or liquid drop, is let to fall through the liquid. This method does not require measurements at constant terminal velocity, as the conventional falling ball technique. Also, measurements do not depend on visual observation, which is not possible in opaque liquids or containers. The effect of process parameters on the utility of this method and its potential application to liquid systems of metallurgical interest were analyzed theoretically. The paper also com- pares the gravimetric method to the conventional falling ball technique for measuring viscosity.

During the construction of shaft on the fractured and weak rock strata, the stability of construction plays an important role. This study includes earth stress estimation, support method, and stability analysis. Stresses on the site of three shafts include structural residual stresses, earth pressures, and hydrostatic pressures were determined. The basic method of estimating the support strength is dependent upon the' size of the plastic ring after rock excavation. During the construction of the shaft, geotechnical measurements, physical properties of the rock, and the change after excavation have to be evaluated again. Geology and construction methods need further consideration.

"INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the ALSANDS PROJECT, with emphasis on the approach taken in the design of the Primary Extraction and Froth Treatment Plants.The Alsands Consortium (Table 1) is a Joint Venture of 9 companies formed in 1978, with its prime objective to obtain governmental approval and concomitant suitable commercial terms to build and operate a third oil sands mining and upgrading facility in the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.Alsands Energy Limited is the Consortium Manager.The Alsands Project will provide about 10 percent of Canada's forecast crude oil production by 1990, which will be 20,700 cubic metres per day (130,000 barrels/day) of synthetic crude oil plus 1,100 cubic metres per day (7,000 barrels/day) of liquid petroleum gases. To construct Alsands the time required by construction labour, field non-manual and engineering support personnel as well as those trades involved in project-related urban development will total approximately 100,000,000 manhours or 50,000 man years. During regular operations, 4,800 people will be employed by Alsands.Approximately $13 billion will be spent to design, construct and start up the plant by the scheduled 1988 completion date."

A recent study by the New York Trap Rock Corporation has conclusively determined that the number of blasting complaints is directly related to the noise produced by the blast. In turn it has been known for some years that the noise produced by the blast is directly related to atmospheric structure of temperature, wind, and humidity in the vertical direction. Normally during daylight hours the temperature decreases with altitude at the rate of about five and one half degrees per thousand feet on a sunny day, and to somewhat lesser amounts on cloudy days. Consequently, sound travels slower with altitude because of the lower temperature, and the sound rays tend to bend skyward, and are soon dispersed in the atmosphere. Quite frequently, however, the temperature increases with altitude, and just the opposite effect is attained. That is sound rays are bent downward, and sometimes reach the ground with intensities approaching that at the source. When the temperature increases with altitude a temperature inversion is said to exist. Less frequently than these two atmospheric conditions a condition is observed where temperature remains constant with altitude. This is called an isothermal atmospheric condition, and sound passing through this type of atmosphere tends to travel in straight lines, neither bending upward nor downward. The sound will be greater than normal near the blast, but will dissipate rapidly with distance from the blast site with no zone or zones of silence.

The economic success of cave mining projects is significantly influenced by the secondary fragmentation size distribution of the caved orebody and making the fragmented ore available for extraction. If the cave does not propagate as predicted, it may lead to stalled cave growth and/or localised preferential caving. This can cause significant ore loss and the inclusion of excessive waste in draw columns, both of which damage the economic value of the project. Uncontrolled caving can have severe consequences for the safety and economics of mines. Such safety risks include air blasts due to the formation of excessive air gaps and damage to infrastructure due to surface subsidence. Monitoring the cave-back delivers critical feedback that is required to exert control over its propagation and reduce the likelihood of adverse consequences. Current methods for monitoring cave propagation include access through open holes, microseismic monitoring systems, time domain reflectometers and extensometers. All of these monitoring systems rely on stable holes for installation and ongoing data collection. However, cables in holes often get sheared due to ground movement in the seismogenic zone well ahead of the cave front, rendering the systems useless. To resolve this issue, Elexon Mining, with the support of Rio Tinto, developed the Networked Smart Marker system, which is based on Elexon’s Smart Marker technology. This system provides a more robust and versatile alternative to other cave monitoring systems as the data is transmitted wirelessly through rock, and thus is not vulnerable to hole shearing/dislocation experienced with current cave monitoring systems. Installations at the Argyle block cave have proven that the Networked Smart Maker system can continue to provide information on the cave-back’s location long after all conventional monitoring systems have failed. My subject today is "Drilling-and-Blasting of Small Rock Tunnels". I am sure that there will be some people, primarily college students but perhaps Consulting Engineers, who will say: "Drilling-and-Blasting? I thought that went out with the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine". A few years ago I talked to Dick Robbins and he told me that they did not try to sell a "Robbin's Mole" unless the tunnel was two miles long. For easy calculations I use 10,000-ft. (3km) A Mole today costs about $2 million which works out to $200 per lineal foot. This is "front money". You cannot place the order unless you are the uncontested low-bidder and then you must wait at least six months for delivery. Of course you can use that time to square up your portals, ready to turn-the-eye, or maybe you have shafts to sink to reach the tunnel grade. But this is "dead-time" and it is a heck of a feeling to have a job and cannot get started on it until you get the Mole. I do not have the American figures on lengths of tunnels but there was an article a few years ago in a British magazine: NEW CIVIL ENGINEER, on this subject. This stated that 75% of the jobs in Britain which were bid were for small tunnels, 10-ft x 10-ft (3m x 3m) or smaller, and that they were less than 5,000-ft (1.5km) in length. This does not mean that 75% of the footage in Britain was less than 10-ft in diameter. It means that 75% of the jobs being bid were less than a mile in length. From my experience in the U.S. I believe that we have substantially the same ratio: so many of the jobs with which I was associated were short, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft and sometimes 3,000-ft and the bores

The rapid fracturing and deformation that occurs around excavations during rock bursts demand that support and reinforcement systems have both deformability and damping capabilities. The energy demand and supply approach currently used in design is considered to be too simplified to represent adequately the rock burst process and the support and reinforcement system requirements. Momentum change may be a necessary second criterion for the analysis of dynamic loading situations. At the St Ives Gold Mining Company, DE plates made from conveyor belt rubber, and dynamic cables with sliding anchors have been developed and used to improve the dynamic performance of support and reinforcement systems. Blasting is often required in urbanized areas to allow for economical execution of construction, demolition, and mining. Several examples of operations that require blasting in built up areas include: rock blasting for foundation and utility excavations; surface and underground mining for mineral extraction; and explosives demolition. Although explosives demolition is an engineering discipline, not at all like rock blasting, it still uses explosives for the felling of structures that have outlived their usefulness. Through the use of modem technology and implementation of extra safety precautions, explosives are used safely in congested areas to make the performance of critical work economical and feasible. This paper discusses several precautions required when undertaking various types of rock blasting and explosives demolition in congested areas. It also presents the adverse effects that must be considered when blasting in congested areas. The effects identified include flyrock, vibration and airblast, fumes, and non-elastic (permanent) ground deformations/overbreak. Measures for mitigating and controlling these adverse effects to provide on-site and public safety are presented.

In comparisons of a trial extruded brick containing 33 per cent coalwash and 67 per cent clay and a trial pressed brick containing 100 per cent coalwash with a standard extruded clay face brick, the mixed feed stock trial brick compared favourably with the standard brick. If a highly plastic clay is used to mix with the coalwash, satisfactory results are obtained in respect to dimension, strength, water absorption, efflorescence, resistance to salt attack, hardness, colour, weathering, mineralogy and porosity. Although a brick containing only coalwash can be successfully manufactured in a press, its mechanical and physical properties are inferior. This mixed feed stock brickmaking technology leads to the utilisation of a by-product with a potential saving of raw material costs. The extent of use is likely to depend on the proximity of the coal washery and the brickworks and the economicsof transportation costs.

A unique type of grinding mill liner has been developed by Waagner-Biro A.G. of Austria. This liner system, termed an angular spiral lining (.ESL), was, successfully tested by Magma Copper Company's San Manuel concentrator in both their 10 Ft x 10 Ft (3.05m x 3.05m) and 12 Ft, 6 In x 14 Ft (3.81m x 4.27m) grate discharge wet grinding ball mills. Magma Copper's savings in power and grinding balls justified conversion of more than half of their twenty-six ball mills to the ESL system.1,2 The ASL system was provided by the Capitol Castings Division of Midland Ross Corporation, the exclusive licensee for such conversions. Capitol Castings proposed the following as expected benefits from installation of an ASL system in an 18 Ft x 21 Ft (5.49m x 6.40m) overflow discharge wet grinding ball mill at the Pinto Valley Operation of Cities Service Company: "(a) Reduction of power consumption per ton of ore milled = 12%, (b) Increased throughput = 6%, (c) Reduction of ball consumption = 6%."
