A trial embankment was constructed using coarse coal mine reject on a deposit of crusted coal mine tailings at New Hope Colliery, located in the Bundamba District of the West Moreton Coalfields in South East Queensland, Australia. The purpose of the trial embankment was to assess the load carrying capacity and settlement behaviour of the crusted tailings, including an assessment of strength gain in the tailings under the influence of the fill. Prior to construction of the trial embankment, a site investigation of the tailings deposit was carried out. This comprised vane shear strength testing, together with disturbed sampling and undisturbed block sampling for the purposes of laboratory testing. Following the site investigation, settlement plates and standpipes were installed at various depths and locations within the tailings in the vicinity of the proposed embankment. The instrumentation enabled the magnitudes and distributions of settlement and pore pressure within the tailings to be determined during and following construction of the embankment. The embankment was constructed using coarse reject in three equal lifts to a height of 3.0 m. The tailings sustained a maximum settlement under the weight of the fill of 290 mm, representing about 4.2 ii of the average initial thickness of the tailings and a loss of embankment height of about 9.7 %. The production of petroleum in the Mexican fields during 1931 followed the downward trend of the past nine years, with a decline of close to 6,600,000 bbl., or about 17 per cent from the 1930 total. The output was close to 32,964,000 bbl., the Tampico-Tuxpam fields showing the largest actual and proportional decline, while the production of the fields in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec remained practically unchanged. Wildcatting along the international border was carried on more actively than in previous years, the only successful completion being the Alberca No. 1 well located about eight miles from the international boundary, across from Roma, Tex. This well, completed at a depth of 2015 ft. and plugged back to 1550, is rated at about 6,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day from a horizon between 1330 to 1540 ft., and is now connected to the gas line from the Jennings gas field, Texas, supplying the city of Monterrey. Favorable oil indications have been encountered in other exploratory wells along the border and drilling will probably continue as these lands are largely held under government concessions which require continuous development work in order to retain title. Development in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec has progressed in a systematic manner, the number of successful completions during the year being considerably larger than in the South or Northern fields. The oil pipe line from the south fields to Mexico City has been completed and its operation and that of the Azcapotzalco refinery is expected to begin early in 1932. The construction of this line will Tevolutionize the transportation of petroleum and its products from the fields to the high plateau and seriously affect the revenues of the government-owned railroads. General conditions in the oil industry were reflected in Mexican operations. Low prices and the imminent threat of an American oil tariff discouraged development work necessary to maintain or increase production, and the curtailment of activities resulted in considerable reductions in personnel by all companies. Early in 1932 the Mexican Government announced its intention to create a surface tax or yearly rental on oil lands equivalent to about 31/4 U. S. cents per acre. "Magnetic pulse forming (MPF) is one of the extreme high-speed forming processes. A metal sheet which is accelerated by electromagnetic force is collided onto a mold and fine and sharp details of the product can be obtained. The deformation mechanism of the MPFed metal cannot be understood only by the microstructure observation of the deformed metal. The deformation behavior of the metal should be investigated also by considering the local microstructure change with strain, strain rate and temperature change during deformation. Numerical analysis is an effective method to achieve this requirement. In this study, pure Al and Cu sheets were deformed by MPF. Impact velocity of the metal sheet was calculated by using ANSYS Emag-Mechanical. Based on the obtained impact velocity, the deformation behavior of the metal sheet was reproduced, and local strain, strain rate, and temperature were analyzed by using ANSYS AUTODYN. The relationship between the local microstructure change of Al and Cu sheets and the deformation parameters was examined.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic pulse forming (MPF) is one of the high-speed forming processes using electromagnetic force. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of MPF. A metal sheet is placed over the coil in the discharge circuit. The discharge current runs through the coil, and magnetic fieldis producedaround the coil. An eddy current is inducedin the metal sheet. Interaction between magnetic field and eddy current creates electromagnetic force. The metal sheet accelerated by electromagnetic forcecollides ontothe mold. Forming is completed in a few tens of micro-seconds.MPF is suitable for metals with a high electrical conductivity like Al and Cu.The MPFed metal may have characteristic microstructure because of high strain rate deformation."

Under the Heavy Metals Program, investigations were conducted at the old Badger dill placer mini in Nevada County California to collect data and information regarding drilling and sampling methods and deposit characteristics. The studies contributed to a team effort by five Bureau of Mines research groups to develop new or improved placer mining technology in the Tertiary gold-bearing channel gravel of northern California. This report describes the techniques used and the results obtained in the sampling and drilling stage of deposit delineation studies that were conducted by the Denver Mine Systems Engineering Group. Sampling included the collection and processing of 400 tons of largo and small volume samples from drill holes, underground workings, surface pits, and blast hole rounds. A total of 355 samples averaging 2,296 pounds per sample provided reasonably accurate data for analysis of the gold distribution. These studies indicate that the bulk of the gold is within 40 foot of bedrock in stacked, lenticular zones of cemented gravel that are largely confined to the relatively narrow, meandering course of the deepest portion of the bedrock channel. Drilling studies involved the testing of three types of truck-mounted drills including rotary, bucket and vibratory, none of which proved to be a completely versatile tool for sampling quickly and reliably both consolidated and unconsolidated gravel.

The injection of heat-bearing fluids may offer a wider application to secondary and tertiary recovery from conventional oil reservoirs than inderground combustion since the process is more easily controlled and the reservoir requirements, in general, are less critical. In all cares, conduction heat losses to overburden and un-derburden will impose an economic limit upon the size of the area which can be swept out from any one injection point for any given set of conditions. The present report describes a method for c.rtin~ating thermal invasion rates, cumulative heated area, and theoretical economic limits for sustained hot-fluid injection at a constant rate into an idealized reservoir. Full allow-ance is made for non-productive reservoir heat losses. Required solutions can be obtained directly from the numerical tables given here, as soon as all operating conditions are specified, withou extensive mathematica1 ~nanipulation on the part of the user. The injection of a heat-bearing fluid into a reservoir is frequently proposed as a means of secondary or tertiary oil production. This form of thermal recovery may offer a wider application to conventional oil reservoirs than underground combustion since the process is more easily controlled and the reservoir requirements, in general, are less critical. Because of its large gross heat capacity, steam appears to be the most efficient heat injection medium, although mixtures of steam and other gases, hot water, hot oil and hot non-condensable gases also have been employed. Whatever the nature of the injection medium, economic evaluation of such thermal recovery processes will depend upon thermal invasion rates, or rates of productive reservoir heating, at any given time after the start of heat injection. In all cases, conduction heat losses to overburden and underburden will impose an economic limit upon the size of the area which can be swept out from any one injection point, for a given set of reservoir conditions, at any given heat injection rate. The present report describes a method for estimating thermal invasion rates, cumulative heated area and theoretical economic limits for sustained heat injection at a constant rate into an idealized reservoir, making full allowance for non-productive reservoir heat losses. Required solutions can be obtained directly from the nu- merical tables given here, as soon as all operating conditions are specified, without extensive mathematical manipulation. It should be noted that ordinary water flooding may be used to move an annular-heated zone outward, even though the economic areal limit for straight heat injection has been reached. Thus well spacing need not be confined to the areal limits as determined here. However, the present calculations do not cover such supplementary heat scavenging programs. The operating element consists of a radial flow system, concentric about the point of injection, with the idealized step function temperature profile illustrated by the dashed line in Fig. 1. The solid curve shown in Fig. 1 gives a qualitative picture of the true radial temperature distribution. It will be shown later that the expressions given below, which are derived from the simplifying step idealization (dashed line in Fig. I), also can be interpreted in terms of the more realistic temperature distribution shown in Fig. 2. For this case, the thermal invasion radius is simply redefined as the distance from injection well to the mid-point of the temperature distribution.

Characterization of an ore or mill product is routinely performed by time consuming and tedious chemical analyses, sink-float separations, etc. Additionally, these types of tests do not provide data concerning the interrelations and interlocking of the mineral constituents. This paper discusses some of the applications and capabilities of the Minerals and Material Science Research Center at The University of Alabama. Back-scattered electron images of coal, oil shale, complex suldfide, and tantalium ores were acquired using a JEOL 8600 electron microprobe with a NORAN (formerly Tracor Northern] 8500 image analysis system. Methods of analysis and typical results are discussed.

Mining is one of the oldest profession and second after agriculture. Unfortunately Mining is not so familiar in the society. Due to lack of recognition in the society, existence of mines in remote places and in dusty and humid working conditions, led the poor response for mining engineering. Mining engineering programs have been increasingly less attractive to the student population over the years due to negative image of mining industry. After graduating in mining engineering, there is not much problem of employment at present. In the last 10 to 15years most of the mining engineering graduates have joined software industry. Even those joined in mining industry also left with in 2 years of service. The main reason for this is not being satisfied with job, it is not only working conditions but also work environment, work culture, remote location of the mines etc. Though many were trying to leave mining profession, the recent economic slow down has prompted some of them to incline towards job safety and retained to mining job. At this juncture a systematic study was taken up to analyze the job satisfaction of mining engineers in India.

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

Most iron ores occur in mine benches as complex mixtures of lithologies and ore types. This significantly complicates their characterisation for both blast design and fragmentation modelling. A great deal of technical and research effort has been applied to the development of models to predict fragmentation from rock blasting. A number of quite useful engineering models are currently available to blasting engineers and consultants, and more sophisticated approaches using mechanistic descriptions of rock breakage continue to be developed and applied by researchers and explosives companies.The engineering or empirical models that are in more general use within the industry, such as the Kuz-Ram model, require appropriate data if they are to generate useful fragmentation predictions. Some of these models have reached significant sophistication and have made very useful contributions to both routine blasting operations and the exploration of new blasting paradigms. However, these models struggle to adequately deal with rock that is as complex as iron ore. This paper reviews the characteristics of the most successful blast fragmentation models available to the industry and discusses approaches to the derivation of suitable rock mass properties to adequately describe blast fragmentation in a range of iron ores.CITATION:Scott, A and Onederra, I, 2015. Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.

Electron probe X-ray microanalyser of a coating deposited with "Elitron¬22A" electrospark alloying (ESA) set (anode - Cr, base-catode - chrome vanadium steel) has shown that the zone of phase forming can be divided into three parts: the coating itself, diffusion zone and a thermal affection zone in the base material. Waves of iron and chrome concentrations have been found in the diffusion zone. The authors interprete them as a phenomenon of substance self-organizing in the 30 pill deep diffusion zone, characterized by a change of compositions during the transfer of material from the coating to the base: coating - 20 µm (FeCr2), diffusion zone - 30 µm (Fe3Cr, FeCr, Fe4Cr, Fe2Cr), base - steel (Fe - 87 %, Cr - 12 %, V - I %). This ESA phenomen has been noted for the first time. It may be relative to the phenomenon of periodic formation of secondary products during the mutual diffusion of reacting substances in the case of a one-way reaction. Similar regular structures may appear in the diffusion zone during ESA of vanadium steels with vanadium, manganese steels with manganese and so on.

The Sobek humidity cell has been in use with minor modification for more than 30 years to determine bulk primary-mineral reaction rates. As a result, it has become a key tool for predicting the bulk rate of sulphide oxidation, the Carbonate Mole Ratio (CMR) of neutralization-potential (NP) consumption to sulphide oxidation, and the rates of metal leaching. Most humidity cells are operated for less than a year, with the resulting rates extrapolated into the future for years or decades. The validity of these extrapolations was tested by examining longer trends from cells that have operated for three to seven years, as found in the International Kinetic Database (IKD). Additionally, large batches of cells for two minesites in the IKD (45 and 46 cells each) were examined to determine if regular, predictable trends were obtained across ranges of geochemistry at a minesite. The long-term cells show that the rates of sulphide oxidation and acid generation, based on sulphate production, have a 50% chance of stabilizing within one year, with the remainder fluctuating significantly throughout their test periods. Despite the fluctuations, the CMR, which is critical for defining site-specific or rock-unit-specific ABA criteria, remains relatively steady in many cases between 1.0 and 2.0 as expected from principles of aqueous geochemistry. However, if the sulphate-production rate falls below 10-30 mg/kg/wk, the CMR value can increase significantly. At and below these low rates, physical factors like flow rates of surface waters and groundwaters will determine the rate of NP consumption, rather than geochemical factors. Also, if weekly rinse pH falls to acidic values, the CMR will decrease below 1 .O, reflecting the exhaustion of fast- neutralizing minerals. The two batches of multiple cells also confirm these trends across arange of geochemistry. The long-term cells show that copper leaching often stabilizes within a narrow range as long as rinse pH remains relatively constant. Also, there is no strong dependence of leaching on the sulphate rate. However, the rate of copper production often increases sharply if rinse pH falls to acidic values. This suggests the measured copper-production rate in some cases is not a true primary rate, but a lower secondary rate after secondary- mineral precipitation within Sobek cells. As with the long-term cells, the batches of multiple cells show that copper production often increases gradually with decreasing rinse pH, with no clear dependence on sulphate production. However, high rates can also occur at near-neutral pH, so secondary-mineral precipitation of copper is not necessarily common.

IN the ordinary course of treatment of pyritic ores or concentrates, whether for the recovery of copper, tin, gold, or any other contents, the removal of some or all of the sulphur contents is almost invariably the first step. The practice is to roast the ore in a current of air so that the sulphur is oxidized to sulphur dioxide and the metal constituents are changed from sulphides to oxides. If it is feasible to produce sulphuric acid in conjunction with the treatment process, the sulphur can be usefully employed; but if this is not possible, then the sulphur contents not only become a dead loss, but tend to be a nuisance as well in the surrounding neighbourhood.The problem of avoiding this disadvantage and making economic use of the sulphur has had attention from the early days of scientific metallurgy, and in the past few years very special efforts have been made both to drive part of the sulphur as such from pyrites and recover it, and to replace the sulphur in the S02 by carbon, with the production of carbon dioxide and precipitation of the sulphur. So far economic success does not appear to have crowned these efforts. In the case of pyrites, of the two atoms of sulphur which go to make the FeS2, the first is very lightly held. Dissociation is effected by heat alone at a temperature which is given by Peters as 5160 C.Now, sulphur and hydrogen will unite or burn together, with the production of sulphuretted hydrogen. It occurred to the writer that, if hydrogen was passed over pyrites heated to the above temperature, this first atom would be snatched away by the hydrogen, and could possibly be economically recovered.The first step consisted of some simple laboratory experiments. From these it was found that this first atom was readily removed, and that the extraction was practically complete. Further, the reaction took place at a low temperature, a dull red heat being sufficient.

"Present paper reviews the various processes for making of metallic foams. These methods are classified in accordance with the state of initial metals - liquid, powdered and ionized. Liquid metal can be foamed by direct inputting of gas into melt, using gas releasing foaming agents or producing supersaturated metal-gas solutions. This group also includes methods creating voids in the melt. Powder route is based on using powdered matrix metal with foamable precursor materials. Finally Deposition techniques allows making highly porous metallic structures using ionized metal.Experimental study presented shows importance of wettability in bubble formation at gas blowing into melt simulation liquid (water) through holes. THE potential oil-and gas-bearing area with "which this paper deals is the large undefined Carboniferous basin, roughly triangular in shape, occupying about 10,000 square miles of southern and eastern New Brunswick. Its base, about 135 miles long, lies on the gulf of St. Lawrence and embraces the whole eastern coast-line of the Province, while its apex lies in the south-west corner of the Province, near the International boundary (see map, Figure 1). The Carboniferous basin may be divided roughly into two areas-the Northern basin and the Southern basin-by a structural feature represented by a ridge of low hills running north-easterly from the Saint John river, near Saint John, on the southwest, to Indian mountain, about eight miles north of Moncton, in the northeast. Within the Northern basin, all evidence regarding the presence or attitude of the older Mississippian Albert Shale series, the only oil-bearing rocks known in New Brunswick, is for the greater part obscured by a thick and practically horizontal blanket of Pennsylvanian strata and, although evidences of oil and gas have been reported, none has been positively identified. Five parallellines of gentle folding, running to the northeast, occur in the Pennsylvanian rocks, within a distance of 100 miles from north to south. This folding is reflected in the courses of the rivers, which lie within the synclines. The relationship of the folding in the younger rocks to structures in the uncomfortably underlying older rocks is unknown, but should now be possible of clarification by means of a geophysical survey accompanied by drilling. Independent geological examinations have yielded no evidence of value in this respect, nor have five exploratory boreholes drilled by per-cussion tools to a maximum depth of 3,645 feet been of assistance, as only one inconclusive hole completely traversed the beds which normally overlie the Albert shales.

This question and others like it have been heard over and over again by those who have tried to convince operating men that there are sound merits to installing a process control computer. At IMC we have done a great deal of thinking and talking about computer control. In the course of these discussions the operating people have asked a number of questions about computer control. These questions and our answers to them make up the main part of this article. Obviously, the answer as to whether or not to go into computer control will be an individual problem conditioned by your company's circumstances. What I hope to do here is raise some questions, give you an idea of our thinking on the subject, and lay out some general guidelines for you to consider.
