Geochemical data related to AMD for the West Coast and Southland regions have been collated into a relational database and GIS system. The types of information include; rock geochemical data, water chemistry data and aquatic macro-invertebrate abundance data. This information will be combined with eco-toxicology experiments to determine impact thresholds on aquatic ecosystems. Ultimately these datasets will be combined with remediation investigations to produce a Framework to assist decision making related to mine planning, consent and compliance.   Current geochemical research examines the controls on As concentrations downstream of gold mining areas and the variability of AMD from Brunner Coal Measure rocks. Assessment of factors that control the chemistry of Brunner Coal Measure AMD such as mine type, hydrogeology, geology, geochemistry and climate is in progress. Minerals that control the concentration of aluminium downstream of AMD point sources include alunite, jurbanite and various forms of Al(OH)3.

The velocity with which the burden moves after blasting is of concern for safety and economic reasons. Models developed for motion velocity by various researchers were reviewed and likely model parameters were used to develop statistically significant models. Regression analysis and residual analysis were used to determine the model coefficients and the accuracy of the models.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques to help identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk-analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and could provide the kind of information needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety to mitigate roof fall injuries.

For the last 15 years environmental Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA) have increasingly been used to evaluate the environmental performance of industrial processes and products and have been employed as a basis in decision making processes in the public and industrial sector. However, assessment methodologies for environmental protection measures and reclamation/remediation measures with respect to their consumption of natural resources are generally poorly developed. In this presentation a methodology for LCA of environmental protection measures and remedial actions, respectively is suggested, using the remediation/reclamation of mining sites as an example. Key aspect of this approach is the development of an evaluation method appropriate for environmental protection measures, which links the various impact indicators recognised in the impact assessments and allows their integrated assessment.

"Mechanical and magnetic characteristics of ferromagnetic materials were investigated by a pulsed ultra-sonic technique. Two instruments, the Ultrasonic Attenuation Comparator (Sperry) and the standard type Reflectoscope (Sperry) were used for measurements of the attenuation of the ultrasonic pulse. The effects of elastic tensile and compressive stresses on the attenuation of annealed and cold worked material are described. In addition, the effects of plastic de-formation, relaxation and aging processes and different ultrasonic test frequencies are reported. The results for Armco iron, SAE 1020 steel, SAE 4340 steel and AISI 420 stainless steel are shown. Under the test conditions, the attenuation was found to be largely a sum of two components; a ""dislocation"" component associated with the losses accompanying the oscillations of dislocation line segments and a ""ferromagnetic"" component associated with the microeddy currents generated by magnetic domain wall oscillations. Either of these components might be dominant depending on the nature of the particular specimen and the test conditions. Finally, the possibilities of using ultrasonics in residual stress determinations, in fatigue studies and in the study of the ductile-brittle transition in ferrous materials, are briefly discussed."

All previous attempts to cut rock in boring by means of revolving steel cutters have failed, chiefly in consequence of the mis-shapen teeth grinding the rock and themselves simultaneously, until, after a very few revolutions, the points of the cutters were so worn that it was impossible to force them into the strata. The diamond drilling plant being cumbrous, complicated, and costly, and seeing that fully 70 per cent of the boring generally needed is in what is known as the" milder strata," it will be readily understood that much of the work done will not pay a dividend on the outlay, so great is the cost of removal, the wear and tear of the machinery, and the loss of diamonds. The Calyx Drill, however, invented by Mr. F. Harley Davis, has been constructed so as to overcome these difficulties, and will penetrate quickly and .at a low cost this 70 per cent. of the milder strata. The Drill has taken ten years' hard work and thought to bring it to its present state of perfection, and it will now drill with steel cutters the 70 per cent of the work performed by the diamond drills at a greater speed and at about one third the cost of the latter.The utility of the diamond drill for certain work is undeniable, but it cannot by any means be described as a machine of general popular usefulness that is to say, it is quite beyond the reach of the great masses of mankind.

A Targeted Geoscience Initiative transect in the eastern Grenville Province reveals an extensive VHMS-style cupriferous hydrothermal system among rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks of the Wakeham Group at La Romaine, Québec. The volcanic rocks outcrop sporadically along a < 10 km-wide by about 100 km-long belt correlated with the south-eastern extension of the Wakeham Group. This belt occurs among voluminous, magnetite-bearing, granitic gneiss. At Lake Musquaro, 1.51 Ga metarhyolitic to dacitic lapillistones and flows, locally with aluminous nodules and veins, are intruded by 1.49 Ga feldspar porphyries. This volcanic package was deposited on typical Wakeham Group arenite (< 1.52 Ga) interbedded with nodular, muscovite- and fibrolite-bearing gneiss, and minor marble hosting finely layered garnetiferous hornblendite, garnetite and magnetite-bearing coticule. The latter are interpreted as meta-exhalite and with the associated albitite (sodic alteration), aluminous veins (hydrothermal leaching) and magnetite-rich granitoids, they are key elements in the search for concealed mineral deposits in this area. At La Romaine, to the south, 1.5 Ga lapillistones outcrop structurally above metasediments and below a composite amphibolite unit of uncertain origin (lava or sills) with magnetite-rich (BIF?) units. An extensive zone of aluminous gneiss, with lapilli textures, provide evidences for severe hydrothermal leaching of the volcanic rocks prior to metamorphism. An adjacent siliceous vein-textured unit likely represent a zone of intense silicification (74 wt.% SiO2), while aluminous, hematite to magnetite-bearing veins in adjacent felsic gneiss (tuff?) preserve evidences for the sequence of alteration events. Despite granulite-facies metamorphism, the main characteristics of the amphibolite unit persist along the entire belt. This competent unit likely served as a cap rock; the garnetite, diopsidite and hornblendite it hosts provide effective guides to the sites of fluid discharge and mineralization. A number of Cu showings, modest in size, were discovered in this unit. Their systematic occurrence, in a structural-stratigraphic sense, indicates that this setting is attractive for mineral exploration despite high-grade metamorphism and deformation. Late-stage veins laden with fluorite crosscut these alteration zones, and are themselves metamorphosed, indicating that hydrothermal activity was polyphased. SHRIMP U-Pb ages obtained on detrital zircons (1 arenite) and on igneous zircons (5 volcanic rocks, 1 porphyry and 6 granitoids), pervasive arc-type geochemical signatures and presence of in situ rafts of barium-rich garnetite in the granitoids indicate that sedimentation and volcanism occurred between 1.52 and 1.49 Ga coevally with hydrothermal activity and emplacement of a sub-volcanic 1.5 Ga granitic batholith with early, 1.53 Ga tonalite intrusion. Such a geological context can sustain large-scale hydrothermal cells and development of VHMS, Cu-Fe oxides or SEDEX deposits.

Shaped charges are being utilized in defense applications against a wider variety of targets including concrete, rock, and soil. This work was motivated by a heightened interest in characterizing the effect of shaped charge attack on brittle, non-homogenous materials, in particular, concrete damage and penetration predictions resulting from a TOW-2a conical shaped charge (CSC). This paper presents a multi-stage approach for accurately predicting the high explosive detonation and subsequent jet formation due to the collapse of shaped charge liner, the changes in jet length and diameter as a function of standoff distance, and the jet-target impact dynamics. The first part of the analysis approach employs the commercial 3-D Eulerian-Lagrangian hydro-code AUTODYN to predict the shaped charge jet formation. 2-D finite difference Eulerian subgrids represent the explosive and casings components, while thin components like the liner are modeled with Shell subgrids. The Pugh, Eichelberger & Rostoker (PER) jetting theory option is invoked to obtain the jet and slug masses and associated velocities. The jetting data is post processed where the jet velocity gradient and jet mass is used to solve for the new jet length and diameter gradient at a desired standoff. The final computation involves a 2-D fully Lagrangian model in which the jet and velocity gradient is represented by a string of Lagrangian segments and the concrete target is defined as Lagrangian with the newly developed RHT (Riedel, Hiermaier, Thoma) constitutive model. This model has a third invariant dependency that accounts for failure mechanisms in brittle materials.

Man had to learn to break rocks as early as the Stone Age, when they formed his main source of raw material. He started with chipping and over the years has reached a stage where he can employ atomic blasts and break, with one blast, millions of tons of rock. In between these two extremes there have been several stages of development including fire setting, use of the expansion of water on freezing in chipped cracks in cold climates, the use of low or deflagrating explosive black powder in about the 17th century, the use of high explosives with the discovery of nitroglycerine in 1846 by Sobrero, followed by the monumental discoveries of the great Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Increasing interest is being expressed in the development and availability of Electronic Delay Detonators throughout the world. Particularly in open-cast mining, the benefits associated with precise, reliable initiation systems are perceived to be considerable. Many of the systems currently being developed have sophisticated programming requirements associated with them, or are numbered systems that require predetermined layouts to determine timing patterns, and importantly are far more expensive than existing initiation systems.

A cooperative research effort was established between the Tilden Mining Company LC, the United Steelworkers of America, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to lower respirable dust levels in an iron ore grinding and concentrator plant. This cooperative effort involved three field studies to evaluate different techniques to lower respirable dust levels. The greatest impact on lowering respirable dust concentrations throughout this facility was achieved through ventilation changes. The most significant improvement was realized by changing the ventilation profile throughout the entire facility. The ventilation to this grinding and concentrator facility was provided by approximately 40 roof fans operating in either the intake or exhaust mode. The operation of these fans was significantly changed in an attempt to pro-vide more of a directional flow pattern throughout the facility, as well as to more closely balance the intake and exhaust air volume. This change accounted for a 31 pct reduction in respirable dust levels in the primary grinding area of the mill. Another successful modification was to improve the sealing of a reclaim tunnel to the outside and by barricading the access point from the reclaim tunnel to the concentrator plant. This minimized the dust liberated in the conveyor tunnels from traveling through the reclaim tunnel and into the plant. These two modifications illustrate the impact that improvements in ventilation can have on lowering respirable dust concentrations in iron ore processing facilities.

The ongoing Overpeck Valley Parallel Sewer Project of Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA), New Jersey, is a US $65 million CSO improvement program to meet a State DEP consent order by 2010. One major program component includes a total of 1.8 km (1.2 mile) long, 1,800 mm (72 in) diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) installed by a Herrenknecht AVND1800AB MTBM. The alignment includes drives through 850 m (2,788 ft) of extremely soft glaciolacustrine varved clay, 980 m (3,214 ft) of loose to medium dense mixed soils containing silty sands, gravels, and boulders, and crosses under the New Jersey Turnpike, US Highway Route 46, and a CSX Railroad Intermodal Yard and a branch mainline. Two types of MTBM cutterheads are being used, one configured for the weak varved clay, and one for the mixed soil conditions. The MTBM is also equipped with a double-steering system consisting of a standard front steering joint and a second trailing steering joint to assist grade control should adequate steering not be achieved by the front primary steering in extremely weak soil conditions. This paper discusses the significant engineering aspects and challenges related to site settings, ground characterization, key MTBM features and performance, and required ground treatment.

Levine has concluded that prismatic slip in titanium is controlled by two distinct thermally activated processes in the temperature ranges O° to 220°K and 220" to 300°K. We feel that his evidence is not convincing. He has drawn a curve through the plot of activation volume u* vs temperature T with a break at 22WK, Fig. 2. We believe that considering the possible experimental error apd the fact that there are only four points between 4° and 196°K, one could be justified to represent these points by the smooth curve we show as a solid line in Fig. 12. Levine believes that (8rf/aT)+ is discontinuous at 220°K, but he hints that he recognizes the possible doubt. We doubt seriously that the results shown in Fig. 1 indicate a discontinuity at 220°K. Certainly if he were justified in drawing a straight line through only four points on Fig. 2, we are even more justified in drawing straight lines through the seven points between 77" and 297°K on Figs. 1 and 3, because a straight line touches all seven of his circles. If his measurements of t were so precise that his decision to draw two curves in Fig. 3 is valid, then the experimental technique is deserving of further mention. We have drawn a smooth curve through the results in Fig. 3 and used this and the curve in Fig. 12 to obtain the values of shown in Fig. 13. Finding continuous is a contradiction of Fig. 4, which deserves comment itself. Levine obtained the solid circles in Fig. 4 using Fig. 2 and a smooth curve through the points shown in Fig. 3. We have replotted these solid circles in Fig. 14. We submit that there is no basis for his two straight lines (dashed in Fig. 14), and therefore have superimposed the curve that we believe is indicated. Certainly, there is reasonable doubt that a discontinuity in dH/dT exists at 220°K, even when one accepts Fig, 2. Furthermore, if one draws the straight lines indicated by least-squares treatments of the results presented as open circles in Fig. 4, their intersection is at about 196°K, not at 220°K as shown. Thus the alleged agreement between Figs. 3 and 4 with respect to "break" temperatures is not apparent. In Fig. 9, Levine has drawn a straight line very much different from the one indicated by a least-squares treatment. Obviously, he has done this because he recognized that H = 0 when T = 0. Metal recovery from solution, i.e., the formation of a solid product from a purified aqueous electrolyte solution, is increasingly becoming more than a simple matter of bulk precipitation. In many cases, operating conditions must be carefully manipulated to control the rate and yield of the precipitation/crystallization process, as well as the purity and physical characteristics of the solid product. A review is presented of the underlying physico-chemical processes, with emphasis on solution and interfacial chemistry. Opportunities for the integration of hydrometallurgical metal recovery and materials processing operations are discussed.

Due to its low mine production costs, competitive rail rates and low sulfur content, the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) now commands 30 percent of the U.S. utility coal market. In 1996, production exceeded 260 million tons, a growth of 110 million tons since 1989 and 15 million tons over 1995. Continued growth is expected as the second phase of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) looms. This growth will be the greatest in the southern part of the basin, where coal quality is higher. This article is an overview of supply and demand issues affecting markets for SPRB coal. It reviews the current markets for SPRB coal and addresses future prospects for market expansion.

This paper will discuss the mechanisms of potential damage from close-in construction blasting, concentrating on two mechanisms: elastic ground vibrations and non-elastic (permanent) ground deformations. The latter will be shown to be the most dangerous for close-in blasting. With respect to elastic ground vibrations, discussion will center on the differences in vibration frequencies and impacts between typical close-in construction blasting and typical mine and quarry blasts, and how using vibration criteria derived for residential structures near mines can lead to very conservative criteria for close-in construction blasting. The effects of high frequency vibrations seen in close-in blasting will be commented on. Factors affecting the magnitude of ground motions will be discussed. Simple, practical techniques will be presented to minimize the potential for damage from close-in blasting, by minimizing the potential for rock block movement or ground heave. Case histories will be presented to illustrate some of the techniques discussed, and give examples of successful close-in blasting projects.

THE liquidus line on the phase diagram for temperature versus composition of a binary alloy system, representing the boundary between the homogeneous melt and the heterogeneous melt plus solid, besides showing the minimum casting temperature, is useful in determining eutectic compositions and the presence of phase changes such as peritectic transformations and intermetallic compound formation. The liquidus often is determined by the cooling curves of thermal analysis, but supercooling frequently occurs, so that the temperature values are low. An alternative method, the one employed here, consists of determining the com- position of samples of the melts from heterogeneous alloys that are at equilibrium. With meticulous attention to fundamentals, this method is capable of yielding values limited in precision only by the temperature control and measurement and analyses. APPARATUS By starting, on the one hand, with a supersaturated solution and allowing the excess solute to precipitate, and on the other hand with an undersaturated solution and allowing more of the solute to be dissolved, both processes being carried out at the same temperature, equilibrium may be said to have been approached from both directions; that is, from above and from below. If the analyses show the solutions to contain the same fraction of solute when equilibrium has been approached from above and from below, one is assured that equilibrium has been reached in both determinations. In order to carry out such determinations, it is necessary to have equipment for obtaining and maintaining the proper temperatures; for holding the melt, measuring its temperature, and stirring, sampling and analyzing it. The present work required temperatures from 420° to 900°C. The equipment consisted of: A furnace, which was a vertical alundum tube, 1 ¾ in. diameter inside and 18 in. long, wound with Nichrome resistance wire, surrounded by a 3-in. i.d. alundum tube wound for 5 in. of length near each end, for compensation of end losses. This muffle was contained in an iron shell with Transite end plates, the intervening space being packed with Sil-O-Cel. The outside dimensions of the furnace were 12 in. in diameter by 18 ½ in. in height. Heating current was supplied by three independent variable-voltage transformers (Variac), one connected to each end compensator winding and manually controlled, and one connected to the main winding through a series resistance of 5 ohms. The application of commercial explosives in an underwater environment, sometimes referred to as submarine blasting, presents the blaster with a unique set of demanding conditions which require exacting detail in design and application. There are two basic methods for removing rock under water: 1) "the drill and blast method"; and 2) "the dobying method." Because it is a far less effective method of blasting, dobying will not be addressed in this 'paper but suggested criteria can be found in the 16th Edition of the **DuPont Blasters' Handbook" page 371. Some examples of submarine blasting utilizing the drill and blast method include channel expansions, harbor construction, bridge pier footer excavations, utility excavation and demolition work.

This report describes procedures for using a high-speed camera to study blasting phenomena. Both quantitative and qualitative information can be obtained, provided that proper interpretations of the projected two-dimensional images are made. Geometrical relationships between object and image displacements are given in terms of horizontal and vertical angles of the camera optic axis with respect to the quarry face. Correction factors are given for obtaining true object displacements from image displacements in the camera film plane. The time of initial rock movement also is considered, and the control-ling factors of camera speed, scale factor, minimum increment of projection measurement, etc., are evaluated in terms of minimum time intervals. The high-speed camera and associated equipment are described, and field measurements and laboratory data analysis techniques are outlined. An analysis of a typical high-speed motion picture is made, and the application of the necessary correction factors is illustrated.
