"ADVANCE planning of mining methods, from the first development openings to stope layout and pillar recovery, has long been accepted as a normal method of operating a mine. Recently, mine managers have become increasingly aware that advance planning of cost and accounting controls can also be considered a normal method of operation. The use of such controls is wide-spread in manufacturing industries. In mining, the gold mines of South Africa have pioneered, with marked success, in this field and have been closely associated with most of the research and field work in accounting control. Canadian mine managers are also beginning to realize the advantages of using planned costs. The control procedures which subsequently have been introduced at various mines have come to be known by such names as ""Responsibility Costing"" or Budgetary Control"".Budgetary control, the term used in this paper, is based on the concept of decentralized authority with centralized control. ;The control is achieved by measuring results against yardsticks which are in the form of budgets or standards. Bud-gets are made for the future activities of each possible operation as planned by the department head, and attention is directed to variations from this plan. Furthermore, the control process charges to each operation only those costs which are incurred directly for that operation, and which can be controlled by the person in charge. Thus, budgetary control relates results to the officials responsible for those results. Expenditures are analyzed according to the organizational structure of the mine and the people who run it, and not according to production processes."

The more than 40,000 mining industry professionals that are expected to attend the National Mining Association’s(NMA) MINExpo International2000 trade show and conference will be treated to the exhibition’s largest display ever. The exhibit is expected to cover more than 60,385 m2(650,000 sq ft) and feature more than 1,300 exhibitors. The event is set for Oct. 9-12, 2000 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Richard L. Lawson, NMA’s president and chief executive officer, said, “MINExpo 2000 will showcase everything that mining is proudest of. This is the largest premier mining exposition in the world.” MINExpo is held every four years.

IN any assay office it is of paramount importance to keep the men interested in their work; and in order to do this, men on routine work, such as lead, zinc, and sulphur deterrrrinations, slag analysis, etc, should be changed around monthly. This gives some variety and helps to keep a man's interest on his work, so that better work results. It may be maintained that to keep a man on the same class of work indefinitely makes him more expert at his work. This is certainly true; but in assaying, where accuracy is so essential, it is absolutely necessary for a man to keep his mind on the work, and not 'get' into a mechanical method of working. He is also on the alert to discover means for shortening his analytical methods, and his capacity forwork is increased. Another advantage is that the men get a good all-round training, and one is never at a loss to replace a man on any class of work when he is absent from any cause. This tends to smoother and more efficient running of the assay department. In industrial assaying it is often advantageous to have a result quickly, so that it will be of maximum benefit in the running of some part of the plant, In such a case it pays to sacrifice a little accuracy to speed up a method. The shortest method is less costly, and a quick approximate method is all that is required to give the superintendent the requisite information. Time is thereby saved, and the cost is less. In carrying out assaying for any large industrial plant, such as a smelting works, there is always a tendency for superintendents running the different departments to send in more samples for assay than are absolutely necessary when no system of costing is in operation. Some of these samples may involve a lot of work and heavy expenditure, as, for example, the estimation of only one impurity in a sample of refined lead. The development and production of artificially colored roofing granules have been key factors in the success of the asphalt roofing industry. They provide protection for the asphalt from solar radiation and satisfy the home-owner's desire for a wide range of attractive colors. As a result, the asphalt shingle has become the most commonly used roofing material today. In addition to providing a stimulus to the asphalt roofing industry, artificial methods of coloring granules completely changed the nature of granule production from one of quarrying, crushing, and screening to a complex technical operation. Today's roofing granules are the result of many years of research, and they are produced in modern plants to exact specifications. History Asphalt roofing materials available today are the product of a long evolution of technological development. Forerunners of the present bituminous products, appearing as early as 1780, were primitive constructions of burlap saturated with crude tar or pitch. An early improvement to this basic effort was the dusting of talc, mica, or other finely ground material on the coated surfaces to keep the roofing from sticking to itself in storage. At times some pigmentation was added with the dusting material for initial color, but this was far from satisfactory. In fact, this early product possessed none of the qualifications of a good roof surfacing material. It was not economical; it was difficult to handle and apply; it was not attractive; it provided no resistance to fire; and it would not withstand the elements as well as other products then in use. Methods and machines were soon devised to saturate endless webs of felt with asphalt from the fast-growing petroleum industry. Even though saturated felt became available, this product of rags and wood fiber had almost the same limitations as burlap and tar. Even with heavier coatings of asphalt applied to both sides of the sheet for rigidity and longer life, the product still lacked color and fire resistance. Further, it was found that constant exposure to the sun soon caused the asphalt to become brittle, and it eventually cracked and leaked. This led to the first important use for crushed mineral products on asphalt-coated shingles and provided the key to the subsequent growth of the asphalt roofing industry. When a layer of crushed mineral was embedded in the surface exposed to the weather, the asphalt coating was protected from ultraviolet light and retained its elasticity over a much longer period of time. In addition to this protection, the mineral surfacing provided some resistance to fire. Fire resistance in the past had been found only in the expensive slate or tile roofs and the unattractive and expensive metal roof coverings which were then available. The most common mineral granule applied to the early asphalt roofing products as they began to make their first significant advances after 1900 was screened waste from slate quarries. Slate granules being available in dull shades of red, green, black, purple and a few other miscellaneous colors did provide a degree of color. Since slate has a flat platelike cleavage, it provides a cheap protective cover for the asphalt-coated sheets. Records show that coarse slate screenings were used for asphalt roofing as early as 1906. Subsurface disposal of oil-field brines was practiced in Oklahoma on a limited scale as early as 1925. The technique of subsurface injection has been improved immensely and has been applied with varying success in many oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, and elsewhere. This method of disposal, however, is only one of several methods available to operators of oil-producing properties, but, in contrast with usual methods of handling brines on the surface it eliminates the damaging effect of mineralized water on fresh-water supplies, vegetation, and aquatic and other animal life. Other methods of brine disposal approved by regulatory agencies in some States include (1) impounding in impervious ponds and solar evaporation, (2) controlled diversion into surface waters, and (3) recovery of the mineral salts of the brine. In most States where oil is produced regulatory bodies authorize the use of one or more of these methods of brine disposal. In Oklahoma, for example, the .Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board of the Conservation Commission has been authorized4/ to adopt whatever methods or means may be necessary to prevent contamination by mineralization of all potable waters within the State.

INJURY experience and employment data at all metal mines in the United States and Alaska are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1958. This publication covers the metal mining industries, and contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines, ore-dressing plants, and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants. These operations report injury and employment information annually to the Bureau of Mines on a voluntary basis. The Bureau is authorized to make requests for such data, and the information submitted contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the metal mining industry. Every effort has been made to make the annual canvass as complete as possible. This publication contains, along with production and development workers, the office employees at the mine location. The metal mines identified in this publication are classified according to the mineral ores mined; that is, copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, and miscellaneous metals.

The two main branches of viscometry (rotational and tube) for the measurement of mining slimes rheology are compared. The effects of solids concentration, particle size and chemical additives and the practical application of rheology in backfill system design are presented.

THE name "tripoli" is used to designate a number of more or less similar types of silica of sedimentary origin. Usually they are spoken of as "soft" silicas, and are light, very fine grained, porous, and friable. Structure is microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline. The deposits are the residual product of weathering and occur in massive form, either blocky or in friable masses. Tripoli is the end product of the weathering of siliceous Limestones, cherty limestones, or cherts. Weathering removes the calcium carbon- ate, leaving a finely divided siliceous residue to which the name "tripoli" has been applied. Authorities differ as to whether the chert accumulates first and is converted into tripoli or the tripoli is derived by direct decay from various forms of silica during initial weathering of the Limestone. It has also been asserted that tripolis were formed in situ in essentially their present condition as a flocculent, colloidal silica, but it is now believed by most geologists that varying degrees of pressure, combined with one or more methods of origin, have influenced the characteristics of the deposits. Considerable confusion has existed as to what constitutes tripoli. Owing to the similarity of names, tripolite, a type of diatomaceous earth found originally in Tripoli in northern Africa, has been erroneously called tripoli. Tripoli, however, contains no diatoms, the distinguishing characteristic of diatomaceous earth. The material mined in the Missouri-Oklahoma area has been considered by the trade to be the type material, and many feel that the term "tripoli" should more properly be restricted to the product of this region. Although also designated as soft silica, it would be less misleading, perhaps, if the siliceous material mined in southern Illinois were called amorphous silica. Both the Missouri-Oklahoma and Illinois materials are very high in silica. Different in composition, as it is very much lower in silica content than tripoli or amorphous silica, yet included under the classification of tripoli in Bureau of Mines statistical data, is the small but important output of rottenstone in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The principal justification for grouping these three types of silica is similarity of use.

"An air dense medium fluidized bed separator is an efficient dry process for the removal of undesirable gangue material from run-of-mine coal. Its cleaning performance depends on a variety of operating parameters that are interrelated in unknown, complex ways. A literature review showed that these parameters' effects had been experimentally investigated using a traditional one-variable-at-a-time approach, which is highly inefficient and sometimes misleading because many of the parameters often interact with each other to alter the overall equipment performance. Also, it is realized that the interrelationship among these parameters can have a significant effect on equipment performance. Therefore, to correctly evaluate the effects of individual parameters as well as their interactional effects on the separation performance of an air dense medium fluidized bed, we conducted a scientific study based on response surface methodology. Empirical models for two key response variables, namely, product ash and combustible recovery, were developed and subsequently used for identifying an appropriate operating region to achieve optimum separation performance. Furthermore, the optimum performances predicted from the empirical models were validated against experimental data. Preliminary results show a strong interaction among the operating parameters investigated in this test program.IntroductionFluidization is widely applied in industry for its various useful features. In the coal industry, it is used in the air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) separator for the beneficiation of run-of-mine coal. In this separator, a medium is created by suspending fine magnetite particles in an upward air flow, and this pseudo-fluid is used as the beneficiation medium, with the lighter coal particles floating to the medium’s surface while heavier particles sink to the bottom. This separation technique had been receiving a significant amount of attention worldwide in recent times for its specific advantages of low operating cost and less restriction for small capacities (Luo and Chen, 2001; Sahu et al., 2009; Dwari and Hanumantha Rao, 2007; Van Houwelingen and de Jong, 2004), but it is still not a well-established industrial practice because of the availability of efficient wet processing technology. However, with a revival of interest in the dry beneficiation of coal, in general, and ADMFB, in particular, there is once again a concerted effort to improve the efficiency of the ADMFB process, and successive improvements have been made to make this process a competitive and viable option. The existing literature reveals that most of these research efforts had been essentially focused on the identification of a single parameter that has a key influence on separation performance, without taking notice of parameter interactional effect. For example, Luo et al. (2004) proposed a pressure drop number to distinguish separation performance without considering the bed height and gas velocity, which are intimately related to this proposed pressure drop number."

This report describes the Foster-Miller program that designed, developed, built and tested an automatic, remote control mine car coupler. This new coupler gives the motorman the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled car s and to determine if the trip is intact. Hazards due to derailment and runaway cars will be reduced as the brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. Laboratory tests described herein have been completed on the coupler set. Applications include, but are not limited to, the unit train system.

"We have tried a new method to fabricate cobalt oxide films onto porous films directly by an electrodeposition method at low temperature. The porous substrate films (membrane-filters and paper) were placed between a LiOH solution and a CoSO4 solution and treated under electricalcurrents of ~1 mA/cm2 using carbon cathode and anode. Effects of temperatures, flow rates and electrical currents have been investigated. As a result, we found that the LiCoO2 films and Co3O4 films were successfully fabricated on paper and/or porous PTFE filters at 120 °C, while CoOOH films were deposited at 80 °C. Furthermore, LiCoO2 films did not cover whole the substrates, but was fabricated just over the anode. The chemical reactions of electrodeposition were also considered from these results.IntroductionRecent agreements on global environment require rapid progress of low energy and low waste processings for the fabrication of thin films that succeed to the mass production with the high consumption of the fossil fuels (such as physical vapor deposition°, chemical vapor deposition2), dip coating with firing3) etc.). The total energy consumption in aqueous systems should be the lowest among all these processing routes, because a much lager excess of energy is necessary to create melts, vapor, gas, or plasma than to form an aqueous solution at the same temperature4)The ""Soft Solution-Process"" (SSP) was one of the best concepts to realize the low energy and low waste fabrication of inorganic materials. 5) Generally speaking, SSP gives similar results to any other processing using fluids (such as vapor, gas plasma) and/or beam/vacuum processing. However, the total energy consumption of all these possessing routes should be the lowest in aqueous systems, because a much larger excess of energy is necessary to create melts, vapor, gas or plasma than to form an aqueous solution at the same temperature (Fig. 1). This idea can be easily demonstrated, using the simple example of BaTiO3. The energy diagram for the formation of BaTiO3 from various precursors is shown in reference 4. Mechanochemical activation of starting minerals and their effect on the solid-phase synthesis and properties of ceramics with lower thermal expansion coefficient was examined. The mineral mixture, pyrophyllite-gibbsite-lithium carbonate, was prepared for the synthesis of ?-eucryptite (Li2O•Al2O3•2SiO2). Dry grinding using a planetary ball mill promoted the amorphization of the starting mixtures. XRD and FT-IR results showed that the crystallization of the target materials occurred from the ground mixtures by calcination. The crystallization of them increased with increment of grinding time and calcination temperature. In the synthesis, the trace of undesired phases such as quartz and cristobalite once formed during calcination at the temperature range from 750 to 850 °C almost disappeared and monophase ?-eucryptite was formed in the ground mixture at 950 °C. Mill operators have traditionally been forced to rely on grade-recovery curves and overall flotation rate constants when analysing proposed improvements to plants. This has led to loss in money and time when a proposed change that showed potential in laboratory scale tests failed to show improvement in the plant. Frequently, this is a result of the operators being unable to gain insight into how and why the proposed change affected the flotation performance. This is due to the classical models not including any description of the subprocesses of flotation and their individual contribution to the overall flotation performance. A new flotation model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P9 project that separates the flotation process into subprocesses and includes the contribution of both the pulp phase and froth phase to the overall flotation recovery. It is not possible to determine the individual components of this new model on traditional pilot plants as they lack the required flexibility and scale. Therefore a new pilot plant has been developed known as the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) that has the flexibility and features required for the determination of the flotation subprocesses. The flexibility and features of the FCTR also make it an ideal tool for investigations into many different aspects of flotation research. These include the effect of reagents, grinding, and power on the flotation performance. This paper will describe the methodology for using the FCTR in these fields of research and highlights the advantages of using the FCTR over traditional methods.

"In early 2015 the Seed Waveform method was used to measure the Geologic response of the MesabiIron Formation to explosives energy input. This single charge wave form was then used to design acritical first blast at a newly developed Taconite mine. This initial blast had several irregular restrictions on design and performance. It had a very unusual “Frying Pan” shape, the regulatory agency required that no fly rock land in State owned waters less than 200 feet (61 m) away, there was no open face to blast to. Design criteria included the need to detonate the blast with two sinking cuts, and have the sinking cuts meet through a narrow neck between the cuts. All these had to be met using a 16 inch (406mm) diameter hole."

THERE has been considerable speculation among mining geologists and mining men in general as to the relative merits of gravity methods in iron-ore exploration. Most of the investigations which have been carried out in recent years have been done by mining companies, and few if any of the results have been published. Three gravity surveys have been made in the Iron River-Crystal Falls area,' " one by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, with inconclusive results, and the other two by Radar Exploration Co. for the Cleveland-Cliffs and the M. A. Hanna companies, with results not known to the writers. Both the last-mentioned surveys were detailed investigations, the stations being spaced as close as 10 ft along traverses,' and were made to determine the feasibility of locating iron ore by gravitational methods. Because of the presence of a large body of ore already extensively drilled, Dr. Harold L. James of the U. S. Geological Survey, Iron River, Mich., suggested that a further test of gravitational methods of exploration be made in the Round Lake area of Iron County, see Figs. 1 and 2. This survey indicated a considerable regional gradient and led to a study of the surrounding gravity field and its relation to the major structural features of the syncline within which the iron formation lies. The southwestern part of Iron County presents a series of hills and hollows elongated in a roughly north-south direction. The bedrock topography is of pre-glacial origin. Relief is moderate; a maximum elevation difference of approximately 350 ft was observed during the survey. Major drainage is dendritic with the larger streams: the Brule to the south, the Paint to the north, and the Iron in the central part. Hills are thickly grown with hard- woods, and lowland areas, not under cultivation, are usually covered by second-growth softwoods. The area covered in this paper includes the southern half of Iron County, Mich., with a deep synclinal basin occupying the central part of the area, and the southeast corner of Gogebic County, immediately to the west of Iron County. The upper Huronian iron formation, slates, and graywackes which form the synclinal basin rest upon a greenstone basement. The basin has not been completely outlined by exposures, drill records or other means, as outcrops are scarce and the thick mantle of glacial drift makes geological investigations extremely difficult. Glacial drift varies in depth up to 300 ft or more. The drift is usually thickest under the hills and is thinnest in the depressions and along drainage courses where most of the bedrock exposures occur. The area over which gravity investigations were made is almost, entirely covered by glacial material. Bedrock of the basin consists of a complexly folded series of iron formation, slates, and graywackes. One of the series of slates has a high magnetic susceptibility due to the fine-grained magnetite it contains. This formation can be detected readily. by magnetic methods and provides a marker horizon which can be easily followed. The magnetic slates are stratigraphically above the iron formation, and much of the geological interpretation of the area is based upon the magnetic anomalies they produce.

This report was prepared as a background reference for future publica¬tions concerning the damping capacity of metals and alloys. It contains a broad description of the theory and methods of measuring damping capacity and correlates the developments of the past decade in terminology, units, and techniques. Damping-capacity instrumentation at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., is described. The bibliography contains over 150 references to recent articles, each tabulated as to material investigated and test variables, such as frequency, stress, mode of vibration, and temperature. INTRODUCTION After it discovered high-damping manganese-copper alloys before World War II, the Bureau of Mines began research on the damping capacity of alloys and has continued to expand this activity to the present time. In physical metallurgy, damping capacity has become an important research tool in the Bureau. The physical measurement of the damping properties of alloys was begun at the College Park laboratories, and later conducted at Salt Lake City under the direction of Dr. E. V. Potter. Among the many articles resulting from this work, Damping Capacity of Metals (108)3/ has received frequent men¬tion in more recent literature and describes briefly the methods of measurement employed at that time.

The Prairie Creek intrusion, near Murfreesboro, Arkansas, is the site of the only commercial diamond mine in North America. Three major lithologies are associated with the intrusion, a hypabyssal peridotite, a volcanic breccia in .which the majority of diamonds occur, and associated tuff. Previous studies, including mining history, geological, geophysical, petrological and whole-rock and mineral chemistry are reviewed. The recent suggestion, by other workers, that this intrusion may be more correctly called a lamproite is examined and supported. This has serious implications for diamond exploration in Arkansas and elsewhere in the U.S.

During the last decade it has been established that conventional mineral-processing control strategies based on classical control theory result in significant increases in plant throughput and operating-cost savings. It has, however, also been recognized that conventional strategies have important limitations for complex multivariable mineral-processing systems. These limitations center around the fact that single-input/single- output control linkings often result in highly undesirable interactions between controllers. During the last few years new and promising approaches to solving this problem have emerged. These approaches are based on the use of on-line dynamic models to make predictions which are useful for control decision-making. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art for mineral-processing control in 1984. This summary is followed by a review of recent developments in model-based control strategies including those in optimal control, self- tuning regulators and decoupling control. Expected trends for the future in the control of mineral-processing operations are discussed.

Hydrochem Developments Ltd. has developed and put into full scale operation a novel type of vertical flotation column incorporating a multiplicity of mechanically agitated stages. Characteristics of this flotation column include a low height to diameter ratio, high upgrading factors and the possibility of modifying geometry and operation to specific flotation requirements. A commercial unit is currently handling up to 100 tpd rougher concentrate at Dickenson Mines Limited, Balmertown, Ontario. Design parameters and plant performance will be discussed.

Surface mining of coal involves removing soil and rock that overlay coal beds in order to expose the coal. Compared to underground coal mining, surface mining generally costs less, is safer for miners, and usually results in more complete recovery of the coal. However, it also results in much more extensive, though temporary, disturbance of the land surface, which can cause serious environmental problems unless the mined land is carefully reclaimed. The earliest commercial U.S. coal production was in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1807, mining became important enough for the federal government to begin keeping statistics on annual production. During those early years of coal mining, reclamation of mine sites and Support facilities was not required by law; however, in the 1930's, as surface mining became more widespread, the idea of mandatory environmental protection and reclamation started to grow. In 1939 West Virginia enacted the first law to regulate the coal mining industry. Similar laws were enacted by Indiana in 1941, Illinois in 1943, and Pennsylvania in 1945. During that period, coal production accelerated greatly and the surface mining of coal became much more prevalent. During World War 11, the demand for coal took priority over environmental concerns, with little consideration for reclaiming the land after mining. Mining pits were not backfilled. Dangerous highwalls were left exposed. Trees and other vegetation were buried by waste material that was simply dumped down the slopes below mines. Topsoil was buried or allowed to wash away. Landslides formed on unstable hillsides. Slopes eroded rapidly because of the lack of vegetation. Polluted water collected in mine pits. Streams became clogged with sediment. Streams and rivers were frequently polluted by acid mine drainage. This vivid image of surface coal mining remains indelible in the minds of most Americans, who remain unfamiliar with modem surface coal mining methods and the changes brought about by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. After 1945, more coal-producing states instituted regulatory pro- grams. Many required permits for mining. Some included inspections. A few made operators post performance bonds to guarantee reclamation when mining was completed. However, due to the variations in those individual programs, it cost less to produce coal in states with less stringent reclamation requirements, giving operators in those states an economic advantage, generally at the expense of environmental quality. With the 1970's came a surge in the demand for coal resulting from the nation's need for increasing electric power generation and the uncertain supply and increased cost of imported petroleum-based fuels. The resulting increased coal production prompted a series of state laws, primarily in the West, aimed at controlling the environ- mental effects of surface mining. During the late 1960's and early 1970's, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana passed laws to regulate mining and reclamation. The continuing lack of uniformity among the state surface mining programs and the increase in unreclaimed land and associated pollution of water and other resources caused a growing demand for nationwide regulation of surface coal mining, both to remove the economic inequities and to is sure an acceptable standard of reclamation. After many years of debate, Congress passed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), which was signed into law August 3, 1977. The Act established a coordinated effort between the states and the federal government to prevent the abuses that had characterized surface coal mining in the past. The law also applied to surface disturbances created by underground coal mining.
