The aim of this paper is the study of the pollution of soils in greenhouses because of the use of pesticides. The degree of pollution was studied in relation with the mineralogical and pedologic properties of the soil. The study was con-ducted in the region of Kountoura, Palaiochora, situated in the south of the prefecture of Hania/Greece. Several samples of soil, originated from 4 greenhouses were analyzed. 5 pesticides with organic drastic compounds were chosen for analytical determination using GC-MS from 18 which were applied in total during the period of sampling. It was concluded that the adsorption of pesticides in the soil of greenhouses is connected with the percentage of the clay fraction and the content of organic carbon.

The Porgera Joint Venture and Dyno Nobel have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (SAG) mills by optimising the blast fragmentation. A number of test blasts were conducted during the period May 2000 to January 2002 and the ore from these blasts was campaigned through the mill. The data from these trials suggested up to 15 per cent increase in the SAG mill throughput with high energy blast designs. However, changes in ore geology (shape, structure and hardness) and potential ore dilution/loss and wall damage have raised concerns about the economic benefits of these designs over the entire orebody. The lack of a system to track the economic benefits of these modified designs has also compounded these concerns. PJV and DynoConsult, the consulting arm of Dyno Nobel have initiated steps to minimise the potential for ore dilution and wall damage resulting from these modified designs. DynoConsult worked with Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to develop and implement a blast management system to track the quality of blast implementation and down stream process benefits. This paper discusses the implementation of the system and the results achieved to date.

NUMEROUS results and formulas have been published for analyzing seismic records, but most of them apply only to large-scale phenomena such as are encountered in studying earthquakes. In a few cases,1 formulas have been published for some of the simpler structures. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to analyze several types of struc-tures without using methods more advanced than those of a first course in calculus. In, tracing a disturbance through a medium, it is almost always possible to base the analysis on Fermat's Principle of Extreme Time, which states that waves of displacement travel between points in such a manner as to make the time of travel an extremum with respect to all neighboring paths. In the simpler cases, comprising most of those used in optics or geophysical prospecting, this time is a minimum and the principle is often referred to as the Principle of Least Time. Within a homogeneous medium, having a uniform speed of transmission of the disturbance in all directions and throughout the medium, the paths are straight and are refracted at the interfaces in accordance with the Snell law of refraction, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle, made by the ray with the normal to the interface, to the speed of trans-mission is the same on both sides of the interface. Thus, in any medium composed of homogeneous sections, this same ratio has a constant value at all points. In particular, if all interfaces are horizontal, it is apparent that the angles of incidence are the angles made by the ray with the vertical direction. Furthermore, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface are all in the same plane at each refraction;

The long awaited new Mining Engineering Handbook is taking shape under the leadership of A. B. Cummins, Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board for the SME Mining Engineering Handbook, and Ivan Given, Editor-in-Chief. The last Mining Engineers' Handbook, the Peele edition, published by John Wiley and Sons, was last revised in 1941. This book was and still is a virtual mine of information although a good deal of its content, especially the cost tables, is becoming rather antiquated. The new one-volume work will contain approximately 1600 pages and be divided into 36 sections. The following is a very rapid method for determining copper in steel. I have found it to give results very closely agreeing with those obtained by galvanic precipitation of the copper. Five grams of steel are dissolved in a mixture of 100 C.C. of water and 10 C.C. of sulphuric acid. When all is dissolved, add 2 C.C.

Rhenium occurs in very small quantities (12).4 In order for the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct an investigation of rhenium sources and methods of extraction, it was necessary to devise improved techniques for detecting and measuring minute quantities of the metal. A modification of the procedure of Malouf and White (46) was developed which can be used to detect rhenium in concentrations as small as 0.1 part per million and can be used to measure quantities of 1.0 part per million. It can be used for the analysis of siliceous and calcareous ores, of molybdenite concentrates, of fumes, of flue dusts, and of other metallurgical products. Development of the method involved devising an amine extraction procedure for separating rhenium from all interfering elements except tungsten and a selective distillation procedure for separating rhenium from tungsten. Adoption of these separation procedures permits use of large samples and precise determination of rhenium by colorimetric analysis of the thiocyanate complex of rhenium by means of a spectrophotometer.

This paper presents the results of a study on cellular acclimation of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to sulfur biooxidation in terms of cells growth and changes in surface properties and morphologies of both cells and sulfur particles. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells were grown faster and demonstrated higher concentration in the soluble thiosulfate substrate than in nonsoluble hydrophobic S0 substrate. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells acclimated to the sulfur biooxidation by actively expressing some extracellular polymers substance and maybe some outer membrane proteins that modified the surface properties of both sulfur particles and the cells themselves. In addition, the results showed that the A. ferrooxidans cells were able to dynamically adsorb to or desorb from the surface of sulfur particles. The cells aggregating onto the S0 surface enhanced the use of S0 substrate by the bacteria cells. This mode may be one of the most important characteristics for the better growth and propagation of the cells in solid sulfur-containing media.

The application of automation and robotic technologies to coal mining equipment at the face offers improvements in worker safety and efficiency. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent machines to perform the most hazardous tasks in underground coal mines may become a reality within the next 10 to 15 years. The US Bureau of Mines Advanced Mining Systems research program is developing the technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications re¬search that focus on the fundamental issues of sensor-based, computer-assisted, machine control technology. In the near term, the research is directed specifically to the computer-assisted control of present-day underground equipment. The immediate effect will be relocating equipment operators to a nearby area of safety. It is being performed in a manner that can make incremental improvements in safety and efficiency. The research is being performed closely with private, government and academic researchers in the miring, space, armed forces and factory automation and robotics research areas. It is a mixture of basic research, applied research and the application and adaptation of existing technologies from a multitude of sources.

An industry ? university consortium was set up to develop advanced tools necessary to understanding of the various phenomena occurring in the hearth of the modern iron making blast furnace. The major driver for this work was to provide the technological support required to extend campaign life of blast furnaces, which, by current agreement is tied to the life of the furnace hearth. The hearth wear is significantly affected by the hot metal velocity, temperature distribution and refractory temperatures. Due to the difficulty in making measurements inside the hearth, novel approaches to gain a fundamental understanding of the detailed physical and chemical processes in the hearth must be developed. The approach used in this project was to develop a 3-D CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model coupled with extensive validation efforts. The CFD model is being utilized (1) to understand the phenomena in the hearth, (2) to understand the impact of changes in the internal conditions of the hearth on wear patterns; and (3) to design a monitoring/controlling system for prolonging campaign. In this paper, the results will be reviewed.

A guide to the development and utilization of an interactive mine-power-system fault program (Z-bus by algorithm) is presented. Theoretical foundations, as well as implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Alternative Kron reduction techniques are presented along with a triangular-storage method for storage conservation. Program capabilities include the analysis of balanced and unbalanced (line-to-line, line-to-ground, and line-to-line-to-ground) fault situations using symmetrical component theory. To account for phase shifting in delta-wye transformers and zero-sequence network constructions, transformer and load configurations are specified by the user. The positive-and zero-sequence connections needed for network conformity are automatically constructed with the required impedances.

The heavy medium cyclone plant for the preconcentration of silver-lead-zinc ore prior to grinding and flotation was commissioned in August 1982. This paper details the measures taken to get the plant up to design performance which involved modifications to the medium densifying and slimes clarifying sections. Operating experiences to date are described with emphasis on the low medium consumption recorded and severe wear on process equipment.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the mineral matter content of 38 American coals using X-ray fluorescence. Measurements of the Ka intensity for magnesium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, calcium, and iron permit the determination of those elements as well as an indirect determination of the ash con-tent of the coals. The percentage of each of the six elements was corrected for absorption by all six elements as well as by hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. It made little difference whether the values used for hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen were obtained from chemical analysis or whether average values for all coals were used. In all cases, oxygen was obtained by difference. The correction for absorption by all these elements involved the inversion of a 6 X 6 matrix and was performed by computer. Assuming that the elements magnesium, aluminum, silicon, calcium, and iron were present in the ash as oxides, the quantity of ash was determined. The results for the mineral elements as well as for ash and oxygen were in good agreement with chemical results. Particle size was found to have a significant effect on fluorescence intensities. A study of size effects was made for pyrite particles, since the sulfur content of coals is of particular interest. Theoretical equations were derived and verified relating the intensity to particle size. It was found that the coal samples must be ground to less than 2 microns. Sulfur appears in several forms in coal, and the effect of sulfur form on intensity was investigated. It was found that the Ka intensity was independent of sulfur form but the Kß intensity varied with the type of sulfur. Thus, the Ka intensity was used for determination of the quantity of sulfur present. Utilization of the sulfur KB intensity did not permit a determination of the proportions of sulfur forms present in coal. However, for synthetic mixtures of cystine and pyrite in carbon black, measurement of sulfur Ka and Kß permit determination of each constituents from measurements of sulfur intensities alone.

Probably the largest single tungsten deposit in the U. S. is one that has yet to produce any tungsten; it is not even listed in tables showing U. S. reserves. This deposit is at Searles Lake, Calif., where the brine contains about 70 ppm WO3. Small though the concentration is, the amount of brine in the lake is so great that it is estimated at 170 million lb of WO3 (8.5 million units), equaling the total of all other known reserves in the U. S. This dry lake is located in the basin formed by the Argus and Slate ranges in the northeastern corner of the Mojave Desert (Fig. 1). It consists of a massive salt body some 35 sq miles in extent, varying in thickness from 0 to 120 ft and containing more than 3 billion tons of salt. A central section of about L. G. CARPENTER and D. AlME Trans., Vol. 214, 1959. 8 sq miles is exposed salt; the remaining area is overlain by mud. Except for the exposed sodium chloride (10 to 15 ft thick) the body consists of a very complex and heterogenous mixture of soluble crystals, containing at least eight major phases. It is only about 53 pct solid, the voids being occupied by a dense brine which is the raw material for two chemical companies operating in the valley.

These problems are so severe and some so new that conventional thinking may not be adequate to resolve them. Innovation has to be a part of every company's approach to the solutions, our concept is to start with a "Blank Piece of Paper.' The objective of 'this paper is to outline steps which can be taken to improve the profitability of a mining business. This is not an examination of technical solutions to individual problems, but rather recommendations for overall change in management thinking. This philosophy is based on our actual, hands-on experience in major open pit operations worldwide over the past 25 years.

correlation of waters and identification of mixtures of two and three waters is important in secondary recovery evaluation studies and studies involving underground movement of waters. The importance of such studies suggests the need for a method to correlate a great number of water analyses to accurately identify and improve the understanding of mixtures of waters. Geochemical analyses of waters furnish a quantitative measure of each of the ions present in a water. Table L shows a portion of the data on many oilfield water analysis report forms in use today. Under "parts per million" are listed the quantitative amounts of each ion in milligrams per liter. Following the work of Stabler' and Palmer", some laboratories have reported additional data to indicate the reaction capacity, or reacting value of each ion. Table I lists data under two subheads for the "reacting value". Under the first subhead, the reacting value is reported in gram equivalents per million, hereinafter called equivalents per million. This value is determined by multiplying milligrams per liter of the ion by a factor equal to the reciprocal of the equivalent weight of the ion. Under the second subhead (per cent) is listed the percentage of each ion based on the total equivalents per million. Sodium is not usually an analyzed value in routine analyses, but is determined by the difference between total negative equivalent per million values and the sum of all of positive ion values for which analyses were made. This difference is reported as sodium, hereafter labelled "sodium". On this basis, the subtotals of the equivalent per million and per cent reacting values of the positive and negative ions are equal. CORRELATION OF WATER ANALYSES DATA Previously reported methods for correlating oilfield waters have used part of the data in Table 1, and can be classified into two categories. Correlation by Chemical Character Correlation methods using the chemical character of waters, as represented by the per cent reacting values of the ionic constituents, have been used by Palmer2 and Tickell. These methods have the limitation of neglecting the ionic concentration of the waters. This limitation can be serious in areas where waters have the same chemical character, but differ in concentration. Correlation by Concentration of the Ionic Constituents The Reistle' and the Stiff methods use the ionic concentration in parts per million and equivalents per million. These methods are effective in differentiating waters of similar chemical character and varying concentration, as in the highly saline waters of the Mid-Continent area. These methods have the disadvantage that they correlate waters by comparing many graphs of individual water analyses to determine the similarity to, or the variance from "type" waters. PROPOSED METHOD OF CORRELATING WATER ANALYSES DATA Correlation graphs presented in Fig. 1 represent water analyses data as points to facilitate the correlation of waters. During the late 1990s Anglo American PLC was evaluating the Gamsberg zinc deposit in the Northern Cape Province. As the primary South African metallurgical technology provider, Mintek became involved in the evaluation of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of zinc from the Gamsberg deposit. eloping DC arc furnace technology for the metallurgical industry. This includes the patented Enviroplas® process for the treatment of zinc bearing waste materials. As a consequence Mintek has developed extensive expertise in the pyrometallurgical processing of zinc bearing materials. However, Mintek?s technologies stopped with the production of Prime Western Grade (PWG) zinc. Early on in the evaluation of the Gamsberg project, it became evident that the refining of PWG zinc would play an important part in the economic viability of the project. At the time the only pyrometallurgical technology available for the refining of PWG zinc to Special High Grade (SHG) zinc was the New Jersey process. This process represents 50-year-old technology and has not undergone significant refinement since the technology was developed. In order to provide a complete pyrometallurgical flow sheet for possible implementation at Gamsberg, Mintek assessed the New Jersey process with a view to either improving the technology or developing a new technology appropriate to the 21 century. In 1998 Mintek convened a consortium consisting of Mintek, the University of Cape Town, Eskom Enterprises, Bateman Metals and Anglo American PLC. The consortium successfully applied to the Innovation Fund for funding to develop a new process for the pyrometallurgical refining of PWG zinc to SHG zinc. The main aims of the project were to develop a new technology for pyrometallurgical zinc refining that conformed to the following: ?Decrease the production cost of SHG zinc metal to stimulate the development of the Gamsberg deposit. ?Be compatible with the current Enviroplas® process, preferably as an add-on to that process. ?Should use electrical energy to benefit from local price tariffs. The project commenced at the beginning of 2000 and consisted of three phases: ?an initial technology search and assessment of the fundamental aspects of zinc distillation. ?the design of a pilot plant for zinc refining. ?the manufacture, commissioning and operation of the pilot plant. A new technology based on a DC arc boiler feeding a packed distillation column was developed and during 2003 the project culminated in the successful operation of a 200 kg/h pilot plant. Ultimately, all of the aims of the project were met and the main outcome is that an advanced process for the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc (the Zincref process) has been developed. The main innovation of the technology was the switch from an energy transfer limited process to a mass transfer limited process (for which a patent has been registered).

Accident data indicates that mobile haulage poses a significant pinning, crushing, and striking risk. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have the potential to protect mineworkers from these risks. However, unintended consequences of mobile PDSs can undermine the safety benefit they provide. Soliciting iterative user input can improve the design process. Users help provide a critical understanding of how mobile PDSs may hinder normal operation and endanger mineworkers. Researchers explored users’ perspectives by conducting interviews with mineworkers from seven mines that have installed mobile PDSs on some of their haulage equipment. Mineworkers reported that mobile PDSs affect loading, tramming, section setup, maintenance, and general work on the section. Mineworkers discussed the operational effects and increased burden, exposure, and risk. Mineworkers also suggested that improved task compatibility, training, logistics, and PDS performance might help address some of these identified issues. This paper also gives additional insights into mobile PDS design and implementation.

Beside many other damaging effects of acid mine drainage, corrosion of pipe lines and pumps frequently adds much to mine operating, costs. Not only is it often necessary to install special and relatively costly acid-resistant materials, but even these may require frequent replacements. It is not unusual for ordinary steel pipe to last only a few days in some highly acid waters, while other common materials, though more resistant, frequently cast only a few weeks. In the spring of 1935, local PWA authorities offered to assign a number of persons to various problems under the direction of regular employees of the Bureau of Mines. It was believed that at least some simple tests on as many different kinds of acid-resistant pipes as could readily be obtained might produce interesting; and valuable information for the mining industry. This paper describes the tests and some results that have since been noted.

"The need for suitable geotechnical characterisation of the rock mass for underground construction is evident. The enlargement project of Railways of the Generalitat of Catalunya (FGC) in Sabadell is a patent example.In general, it is uncommon to encounter problems in the identification and characterisation of certain relevant weak rock formations, which affect project designs. However, all materials should be properly studied, as mischaracterisation can lead to a suboptimal design, resulting in construction problems during the course of the work.Good quality rock is generally not difficult to characterise, but this is not the case for Quaternary or Tertiary cemented soils. Geotechnical investigations based on boreholes do not provide enough information because samples are often badly damaged during the drilling process, if appropriate techniques are not taken. The samples can be altered and may not be representative of the in situ?material.The design and construction of the extension to the FGC line in Sabadell highlighted the importance of the characterisation of Quaternary and Tertiary cemented soils, in particular their rigidity and its underestimation. The twin tunnel project had a total length of 5.1 km, including five stations with 3.5 km excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM). The remaining 1.6 km was constructed using cut and cover methods. The TBM portion of the tunnel had a bored diameter of 6.83 m with an internal radius of 3 m and 0.25 m thick precast concrete segments. Much of the tunnel alignment passed through and was affected by the presence of certain stiff layers of Quaternary cohesive materials.In this paper the TBM challenges faced will be discussed in detail. In particular:  TBM excavation rate reductions and overheating problems due to the required excessive thrust and torque floating problems in the lining due to nil earth pressure over the rings and the development of an improved, controlled setting time mortar to address this issue block-in and block-out methodology for each station, in some cases with internal blocks to prevent earth pressure drops and soil scouring the relevance of performing simpler solutions, for example, hyperbaric interventions to examine the cutter wheel tools when it has been shown that interventions under atmospheric conditions were equally feasible the implementation of conventional bivalve machines as standard procedure for excavation of diaphragm walls in stations, where in fact, hydrocutter machines or pile boring machines may have been required, given the mechanical characteristics of the materials to be dug out.CITATION:Justa Cámara, R and María Bertrán Llop, J, 2014.
