"As conventional underground deposits are continuing to be depleted, mining operations have been forced to produce at greater depths and in more geologically and geometrically challenging conditions. Over the past decade, there has been a global increase in the application of cemented paste backfill (CPB) material as a means of ground support in open stope mining operations. Although CPB has been extensively used within the industry, there are many fundamental factors affecting the design of safe and economical fill structures that are still not well understood. A critical design issue with respect to backfilled stopes is determining the stress state within the fill material as well as the surrounding rock.This paper details the development of a reliable numerical model for the simulation of stress distributions around the excavated stope area, as well as through the backfill material. Through discussions on modeling parameters and output results, one is provided with insights into the mechanisms of stress redistribution allowing for further accuracies in simulating the behavior of the CPB material as well as its interaction with the surrounding rockmass.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDModern technological innovations with respect to material processing, cementitious composition and chemical additives, and material transportation have provided the mining industry with a ground support material that greatly reduces mine waste costs, while, when used appropriately, increases reserve production and mine stability. As mining operations continue to produce in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, cemented paste backfill (CPB) has become commonly employed within primary-secondary excavation-support sequencing allowing for total extraction of the mining reserve. As shown in Figure 1, primary stopes are initially excavated and then backfilled in a two-staged pour: plug and final pours. The plug (initial pour), is initially placed at the bottom of the stope with a CPB material of heightened cementitious material. While the plug provides a strong foundation on which to build the rest of the CPB structure, it also provides protection against barricade breakthroughs (Li and Aubertin, 2009), as well as providing operations a means of underhand stope-and-fill mining through the use of an artificial sill pillar (Hughes, et al., 2011). Following placement, the plug is allowed to cure to a designated design strength. Upon completion of the plug, a less cementitious “final” pour material is used to backfill the rest of the excavated area."

John Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—The activity of FeO in silica-saturated slags shown in Table V is about 0.40 in the temperature range 1260" to 1350°C. Recent measurements by N. A. Gokeen at 1600" lead to about the same value. He finds the oxygen content of liquid iron in equilibrium with silica and ferrous silicate slags to be 0.088 pct. Under pure iron oxide slags at the same temperature, it is 0.225 pct. The ratio places the activity at 0.39.

Improvement of post tap hole practices is achievable by mechanized handling of melt during the production of Ferro Chrome, resulting in higher recovery of chromium. The paper deals with modern practices adopted in the production of ferro-chrome since past two decades. The methods and practices deal with various areas : a) Improved method of operating the tap hole by selection of right quality of refractory to maintain the life of tap hole. b) Collection of melt in different types of receptacles like refractory brick lined mild steel ladles, cast steel ladles, cast iron pans being chosen for cost effective and efficient handling. c) Separation of slag and metal, casting of metal, crushing, sizing and stock piling etc. d) Slag disposal and recovery of entrapped metal. The drive behind the above development is continuous improvement, which results in higher chromium recovery and reduces loss of metal in slag by completely mechanized method so as to be at the same level with producers of ferro-chrome in other advanced countries , in the emerging global economy.

Discussion of the paper of L. W. BAHNEY, presented at, the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 339. to 344. E. J. HALL,* New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary+).- The Chiddy method for determining gold and silver in cyanide solutions has been subjected to so many proposed modifications, of which L. W. Bahney's is one, it is natural to suppose the method is defective. There is no denying that this method is capable of giving inaccurate results, but so is any other method of quantitative determination. However, proof has not come to my notice that the troubles are inherent and not in the detail application, and I am inclined to think from our experience that in many cases it is the latter. Errors in this method may be occasioned by: (1) The retention of zinc in the sponge, which tends to desilverize the molten lead in cupellation, similar to the action in the Parkes process, removing gold and silver in a crust of zinc oxide. Failure to remove zinc may result from lack of concentration of hydrochloric acid, clue to neutralization by salts present, volume of liquid too great for the specified amount of acid, or the use of weak acid. (HCl rapidly loses its strength unless kept in perfectly tight containers. The HCl gas escapes even from the ordinary glass-stoppered acid bottles after the plaster seal has been broken.) Undissolved zinc, is likely to be held in the upper part of the lead sponge, which floats above the liquid, and unless the solution is boiled it will escape action. The paper covers the development of an efficient, "state-of-the-art" design approach encapsulating extensive research and development by Gulf on soft loading, low impact, zero spillage transfer chutes. The development, which interacts and interfaces the comprehensive methodologies for transfer chute design, allows Gulf to deliver detailed designs within 8-24 hours rather than the norm which is weeks or months. Outputs include 3D models of completed transfers and support structures along with rendered 3D representations of the design which can be fully manipulated around all axis in 3D.

IN ref. 1, on the basis of tension and torsion experiments with single crystals of a brass, the values given in Table I were obtained for elastic coefficients. It was pointed out by Zener that the values for the 71.2 pct Cu were not satisfactory, since they resulted in a negative value for the bulk modulus, namely —4.17X1012 sq cm per dyne. In reevaluating the data of this investigation, it was determined that the reason for this negative bulk modulus lay in the extrapolation of the reciprocal Young's modulus to the zero value of the orientation function shown in Fig. 5 of ref. 1. This extrapolation was reevaluated by the method of least squares (50 pct probability) and a new value of the coefficient S,, was determined as 18.9220.42X 10M sq cm per dyne in lieu of the value originally reported of 18.82x10 sq cm per dyne. This new value of S, leads to a new value of S, of — 9.43 X101" sq cm per dyne. The values of the other coefficients are unchanged. results. This value compares with the value of 12.3X10 sq cm per dyne reported by Schmid and Boas? The new results are summarized in Table 11. These results follow similar qualitative trends, previously published,' relative to the effect of zinc content. However, the derived values of C11, C,, C,, and K are so sensitive to the uncertainty in the first decimal place of the S, values that they are probably not useful. This uncertainty must also apply to the previous results of Masima and Sachs," who obtained S, values from a similar extrapolation drawn wholly above their data points. "The objective of this project is to investigate methods to lower the sulphate concentrations in the mill effluent. Currently, the concentration of sulphate in mill effluent is approximately 2 g/L. The high concentration of sulphate ion in the effluent has the potential to become a regulatory issue. The target sulphate concentration in mill effluent for this work was less than 500 mg/L. The pilot studies, using sulphate precipitation, were carried out at the mill. The results of the sulphate precipitation pilot study, using calcium hydroxide and sodium aluminate, indicated that:• The sulphate concentrations in effluent could be reduced to less than 500 mg/L.• The concentrations of most other elements of concern, such as selenium, arsenic, cobalt, nickel and vanadium, were also reduced.INTRODUCTIONHistorically, the concentration of sulphate, SO4 2-, in water has not generally been subject to regulation. However, with the increasing global consumption of water, stricter regulations on sulphate quantity may be imposed. Sulphate is a concern in process waters as it forms scale on process equipment and leads to operational problems. High sulphate concentrations may result in adverse health effects. The taste theshhold for the most sulphate salts in drinking water ranges from 250 to 500 mg/L.A literature search and review to identify methods to reduce sulphate concentration in the mill effluent was carried out. A number of methods were selected and tested in the lab. The experimental results indicated that the precipitation methods, using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compounds, barium compounds, as well as the ion exchange and the membrane methods, were effective for the removal of sulphate to below the required limits. Some other elements, such as vanadium, nickel, cobalt, selenium and molybdenum, were also removed.The process, using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compound for sulphate precipitation, similar to the Cost Effective Sulphate Removal (CESR), also known as “Walhalla” process, described in the Montana Tech report (“Demonstration Of Sulfate Removal” 1999), was selected for further consideration [1]. In the CESR process, the water is treated with lime for precipitation of gypsum, followed by the reaction with a proprietary aluminum compound for removal of a residual sulphate. The final pH adjustment is carried out using carbon dioxide. Results of a preliminary cost estimate indicated that the removal of sulphate using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compound was the preferred method of treatment, considering its low cost, availability of chemicals and minimal changes to the existing plant circuit."

"This paper describes the investigation of a large, progressive slope failure on the southeast wall of the east pit at Highmont Mine, British Columbia Geotechnical investigation s consisted of geological and structural mapping, assessment of blasthole drilling records, review of rock core information, slope movement monitoring and back analysis of various possible failure modes. Climate records and mining history were also assessed to determine their relationship to slope movement .Analysis of movement monitoring records and geotechnical information indicates that the failure is deep seated. The upper portion of the failure surf ace occurs along clay filled discontinuities. The lower portion of the failure surf ace appears to occur through the highly altered rock mass. High groundwater pressures and mining at the toe of the slope are documented to have had a major influence on stability at various times during the failure. Stability analyses results are presented and possible remedial measures are discussed.IntroductionHighmont Mine is located near Logan Lake in the Highland Valley approximately 50 km southwest of Karnloops, British Columbia (Fig. I). Mining of the porphyry copper and molydenum ore bodies began in 1980. In May, 1983, when mining in the east pit had progressed to a depth of about 60 m (200 feet) , a failure (designated the Southeast Failure) began to develop in the southeast corner of the east pit. Subsequent mining to a depth of 110m (360 feet) was accompanied by frequent and substantial slope movements involving between 500000 and I 000 000 m3 of rock . The slope was monitored extensively to assess short-term movement trends for operational safety. Geological mapping, core logging and rock mechanics testing were used in conjunction with the long-term monitoring information to determine the failure mechanism, conduct stability analyses, assess the effects of instability on pit design and enable design and installation of remedial measures."

Layers of magnetic taconite of above average magnetic iron content extend down dip on the Mesabi Range to depths beyond the reach of open pit mining. A selected layer with thickness of 75 to 100 ft underlies many square miles. Such a selected layer can provide over 50 million tons of recoverable concentratc per square mile, at lower concentration ratios than in the present open pit taconite operations. The system contemplated would consist of large scale underground quarrying by a lane and pillar method. Working heights would be 60 to 100 ft; room widths, 50 to 75 ft; and productivity targets, about 40 tons per man-shift. The most critical problems would he roof control and blasthole drilling. The successful operation of large open pits and concentrating plants for treatment of magnetic taconites indicates that the basic techniques and economic problems of pellet production have been solved. The open pit reserves are large, but they are not necessarily available in sufficient quantity or quality to provide an adequate raw materials base for all potential producers. Furthermore, as the more easily available open pit crudes are used up, the pits will become deeper, stripping costs per ton of concentrate will increase, and recoveries will decrease as leaner crudes are utilized. The time will come when supplementary and replacement reserves of magnetic taconite will be required. One way these can be obtained is by underground mining of the down-dip extension of the Mesabi magnetic taconites, especially those layers averaging well over 25% recoverable iron. A key point in such a proposal is the possibility of realizing substantial savings by beneficiating an ore of 30% magnetic iron at 2.5 to 1 ratio of concentration. This contrasts with current practice in Mesabi commercial taconite plants, where the ore averages 22 to 25% magnetic Fe, with concentration ratios of about 3.0 when producing 61% Fe pellets. Two factors which favor the eventual development of underground taconite mining are: 1) the desirable physical structure and high grade of taconite pellets in general and 2) the improved engineering techniques in underground mining. Injection of gases into slag-melt mixtures produces various zones as a result of bubble formation and disintegration within the melt. The extent of these zones depends on the type of reactor used. When compared with ferrous processes, non ferrous processes are character- ised by large bubbles formed adjacent to the tuyeres, low flowrates and shallow tuyere sub- mergence. These features can result in a greater proportion of reaction occurring above the bath, more refractory wear and tuyere blockage with more splashing. The large bubble zone adjacent to the tuyeres has been investigated using the tech- niques of physical modelling, mathematical modelling and plant trials. Large bubble form- ation in physical models was recorded using a high speed camera and a rapid response pressure transducer coupled to an oscilloscope and data recorder. It was found that the bubble volume (Vb) could be correlated at low flowrates using the single bubble model Vb = 1.378 Q6/5 g-3/5 Deviations from this correlation occurred with increasing gas jet momentum. Plant trials were carried out on a copper converter at Mount Isa Mines during five different charges. Pressure measurements were made through the tuyeres during the slag blow and commencement of the copper blow. The power spectrum density showed that the dominant pulse amplitude occurred at a frequency of approximately 3 pulses/sec. Plant data from this and other converters were correlated using the same relationship as for physical modelling. De- viations occurred due to the state of the re- fractory, bath composition or bath circulation effects.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Thermal treatment of respirable size silica dust samples results in marked changes in their hemolytic activity. These changes can be correlated with changes in the characteristics of the particle surface as measured by infrared spectra, zeta potentials, and specific surface area. Silica samples from various sources (Min-U-Sil, fumed silica, and a NIOSH standard sample) were heated or calcined at temperatures ranging from 100-1095C. The hemolytic activity of the crystalline materials decreased after thermal treatment. The behavior of the fumed material was found to be more complex. Material of very large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. Tre changes in hemolytic activity can be related to infrared spectra and zeta potentials of the materials. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of the fumed material disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp, characteristic band at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. Zeta potential measurements conducted in the pH range of 2.0-10.5 exhibit a unique change in zeta potential v.s. pH profile with heat treatment. These findings indicate that the removal of active surface silanol groups by calcination results in reduced cytotoxicity, as measured by a hemolysis test.

"The processing of gold ores with high silver contents can provide operational challenges, such as high cyanide consumption, retardation of gold leaching and competition during adsorption stages of carbon-in-pulp/leach/column (CIP/CIL/CIC) circuits. In particular, the silver, which is about 1.5% of the value of gold, competes with gold during carbon adsorption due to its higher concentration in many Ag-Au ores, potentially leading to gold solution losses. Fresh and partially fouled (barren and regenerated) activated carbons were evaluated at various Ag:Au ratios and total metal concentrations with regard to the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium loadings. Conventional Freundlich isotherms were found to be highly inaccurate for predicting equilibrium loadings in the competitive adsorption environment. An integrated model, which incorporates competitive adsorption kinetics with a modified competitive adsorption isotherm model has been developed and validated using plant and laboratory data. The Guasare Coal Project is located a short distance from Lake Maracaibo, in the Northwestern region of Venezuela. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia, ACC Venezuela, a subsidiary of ARCO, and AGIPCoal of ENI Group, Italy, was formed to develop the Guasare coal reserves for world markets. Drilling with the Venezuelan state of Zulia has indicated a coal resource of over 6 billion metric tons. Further exploration has delineated the Guasare deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated mineable reserves of this area (300 million metric tons) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs.

The study of the hydromechanical behaviour of fractured rock masses requires a detailed knowledge of the isolated fractures. The aim of the paper is the simulation of the evolution of the void space, located between both walls of a fracture, during a shear test under constant normal stress. Results of the mechanical simulation model are first validated then analyzed in detail. We observe that, during the shear process, there is an opening of the fracture with the creation of preferential channels. These channels are determined at the early phase of the shear process (pre-peak phase), and we observe during the post-peak phase that void areas increase in size rather than the creation of new apertures. Die Untersuchung des hydromechanischen Verhaltens eines zerlegten Felsmassivs erfordert genaue Kenntnisse der einzelnen Spalten. Ziel dieses Artikels ist die Simulation der Evolution des Hohlraumes zwischen den beiden Wänden eines Spaltes während eines Abscherungsexperimentes unter konstantem senkrechtem Druck. Die Ergebnisse der Modellierung werden zunächst mit dem Abscherungsexperiment verglichen und dann im Einzelnen ausführlich analysiert. Während des Abscherungsprozesses tritt eine Öffnung des Spaltes auf, die die Bildung von bevorzugten Fliesswegen fördert. Diese Kanäle werden bereits in einer frühen Phase des Abscherungsprozesses (pre-peak Phase) festgelegt. In der post-peak Phase tritt dann eher eine Vergrößerung dieser Kanäle, als die Bildung neuer Hohlräume auf. L’étude du comportement hydromécanique d’un massif rocheux fracturé ne peut se faire sans une connaissance approfondie des fractures le constituant. L’étude présentée dans cet article concerne la simulation de l’évolution de l’espace des vides présent entre les deux épontes d’une fracture au cours d’un essai de cisaillement à contrainte normale constante. Les résultats du modèle sont tout d’abord validés puis analysés en détail. On constate que, au cours du cisaillement, il apparaît une ouverture de la fracture permettant la création de chenaux préférentiels. Ces derniers sont déterminés très tôt dans le cisaillement (phase pré-pic), et on observe dans la phase post-pic davantage un accroissement de la taille des chenaux plutôt que la formation de nouvelles zones de vides.

This Bureau of Mines open file report is one in a series of reports written about the Valdez Creek Mining District (VCM D) as a result of the continuing Bureau of Mines mining district evaluation program. This report presents the results of order-of-magnitude mining feasibility studies. The mining feasibility studies were conducted for mineral deposit models that were based on real and hypothetical deposits that occur in the VCMD. A total of 6b mine models were developed for application to the mineral deposit models. The goal of the feasibility study was to determine the monetary value per unit of minable ore that would cause the simulated cash flow for each of 66 mine models to achieve certain pre-defined rates of return for the invested capital.

In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining. This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.
