EXPERIMENTAL results of the last decade have shown that both accelerator particles and reactor radiations produce significant changes in the properties of metals. These changes, called radiation damage, are important from both academic and engineering viewpoints. An understanding of the radiation damage produced by reactor radiations is difficult, because many kinds of particles having varying energies are present. Therefore, many fundamental studies are being conducted using accelerators in order to obtain nearly mono-energetic beams of various charged particles. Furthermore, many of these experiments are conducted at low temperatures in order to freeze in the radiation-produced lattice defects, after which the specimens are annealed to study the movement of the defects. It is found that although much of the low temperature radiation damage disappears by annealing at room temperature, a significant amount remains. Because there is no assurance that irradiation followed by annealing at a higher temperature will produce the same effect as irradiation at the higher temperature, and because there is an immediate interest in reactor radiation effects during exposures at and above room temperature, a major program is in progress at this laboratory to investigate some of these effects. This paper, representing a part of the program, compares the radiation damage to a group of metals which were exposed under nearly identical irradiation conditions. The metals, representing the three major crystal systems, include copper, nickel, titanium, zirconium, iron, molybdenum, and type 347 stainless steel. The effects of reactor radiations have been treated from a theoretical viewpoint by Seitz' and Ozeroff.' The problem considered by them has been the atomic displacements produced in an infinite medium by mono-energetic beams of both neutrons and charged particles. For reactor experiments, this treatment is not wide enough in scope, because specimens and reactor components are finite, and there are continuous energy spectra of the various particles. Therefore, the theoretical considerations will be extended in this paper to cover reactor conditions and the findings will be compared with the observed radiation damage. Experimental Materials—The six basic metals for this investigation were of commercial or higher purity, and the type 347 stainless steel was of commercial quality. These materials were supplied in various forms ranging from ingots to finished rods, and were fabricated to rods approximately % in. in diam and annealed for specimen stock. There has been a veritable increase in the adoption of electronic detonators in the last few years. Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, certainly key mining parameters. The field programmability also helps in reducing the on-site magazine storage of detonators with diverse fixed delays. A typical electronic detonator may consist of a logic core, a communication interface, storage capacitor(s) and the ignition element. Being electronic components, the electronic detonators may be susceptible to RF or electromagnetic interference (EMI). RF sources are virtually everywhere: cellular phones/towers, radio transmission, microwaves, walkie-talkies, high voltage (HV) transmission cables and wireless networks with their characteristic frequency emissions. Safety issues prevail; e.g., whether the RF interference can cause premature or inadvertent firing whether directly or indirectly. From a reliability perspective, the RF interference may also impact on bus communications, e.g., during the logging, verifying, charging and firing phases. The deleterious communications disturbance may result in a misfire (non-firing of one or more of the detonators) which is terribly inconvenient for the mine operators and even pose a safety hazard.

"A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

This paper will deal with some of the considerations which, were involved in the design and construction of the uranium mills in the Elliot Lake area . These plants, eleven in number, range from 1500 to 6500 tons per day milling capacity. Most references are with respect to the seven plants in the Rio Tinto Group which have a combined milling capacity in excess of 20,000 tons per day. In dealing with such abroad subject as mill design, one has the choice, of covering a few specific problems in great detail, or else attempting to cover many subjects superficially and briefly. In preparing this presentation, an attempt has been made to compromise on these extremes, and to select some interesting illustrations which are of general interest in the field of mill design, and of value to persons concerned with mill design broadly, beyond the field of uranium mills.

Another major aluminum company announced intentions to follow other domestic producers recent price actions by raising its unalloyed ingot quotes by 3¢ to 44¢ per pound, effective June 1, 1976. COBALT: All final data for 1975 are included in the table for cobalt on page 23. Demand in March increased significantly for the second month in a row, signaling a recovery from the previous year's relatively low demand levels. Imports of cobalt tripled in March over those of February. This should partially offset reduced sales of cobalt excesses from the National Stockpile. Import projections for the next several months have been lowered because transportation difficulties in Zaire are expected to result in reduced shipments.

The Bureau of Mines, at its Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, has devised methods for separating and reusing the major portion of waste plastics discarded in urban and industrial refuse. Waste plastic concentrates from a local collection drive, recycling center collections, urban refuse pilot plants, and the secondary metals industry were separated into three major thermoplastic families--polyolefins, styrenes, and vinyls--based on differences in density using a Bureau-designed sink-float-elutriation hydraulic separator. Other separation methods and systems such as air classification, jigging, liquid media, screening, and electrostatics were studied. Vinyl plastics contain up to 50 percent HC1. It was found that over 90 percent of the HC1 in vinyls can be recovered as usable hydrochloric acid by pyrolysis at 350° C. The remaining pyrolysis products which had heats of combustion in excess of 12,000 Btu/lb, could become valuable as a future source of energy. A characterization study conducted on eight chopped wire insulation wastes from secondary copper and aluminum processors showed that most wastes contained 2 to 7 percent residual metal and large percentages of vinyl. The residual metal content of some of these wastes was lowered to 0.1 percent and the vinyl portion segregated using various separation techniques. The research also suggests ways in which reclaimed thermoplastics may be fabricated into useful products.

Battle Mountain Gold Company's Paj ingo Mine is the first gold mine developed by the Company in Australia. The Mine located in northern Queensland commenced operations in September 1987. The high grade epithermal orebody is selectively mined and processed through a conventional carbon in leach/carbon in pulp (CIL/CIP) plant at a rate of 200000 tonnes per annum. In 1988 it produced 61000 oz gold and 152000 oz silver. Inadequate preoperational development of non technical management and organisational functions often leads to inefficiencies that last well into the operation. The Pajingo experience in this regard is oaTple ented by those from a number of other recently commissioned small operations. A checklist is discussed to assist any future preoperational group in focussing their attention into areas that seem to be of secondary importance at the time but often have a significant impact on overall management efficiency later.

The determination of the temperature and electrical potential distributicms in the cathodes of aluminum electrolytic cells is difficult. The reascms come from the various nature and the intricate three-dimensional geometry of the materials; besides thermal and electrical phenomena react upon each other. A method of calculation using a computer program applied to a mathematical model, figuring the cathode, is developed. Both of the thermal and electrical phenomena are simultaneously considered. Temperature and electrical potential distributions are finally obtained by successive iterations. Results are compared with measurements on industrial cells. Theoretical and practical applications of these studies are given. Up to the present time the study of the distribution of the temperatures and electric potentials in the electrodes, anode and cathode, of the electrolytic cells used for the production of aluminum was limited to one of the two aspects of the phenomena because of lack of a simultaneous method of calculation. For example, the anode or cathode drop was studied assuming that the temperatures in the iron and carbon are known, a method that obviously is very approximate since iron resistivity, in particular, greatly varies with temperature, which in turn depends on current density. Consequently we tried to find a method of calculation simultaneously taking into account both thermal and electrical phenomena. We proceeded to the study of the cathodes as an initial approach to the problem. Although the cathode and surrounding materials may have varied forms and particularly very heterogeneous characteristics, their structures are simpler than that of the Sijderberg anode and boundary conditions are more easily represented than in the case of anodes even though they are prebaked. The study was in two parts: a) development of a model schematizing the true geometry of a cathode and defining the thermal and electrical boundary conditions, and b) working out a method of calculation of the temperatures and potentials by means of an electronic computer. To facilitate solution of the problem, a model was used initially much simplified in comparison with an actual cathode. This model permitted development of the method of calculation. In a second phase, this model was adjusted to the study of actual cathodes and applied to different types of cells: low- or high-intensity cells, cells set up at ground level or above ground level, cells with cathodes more or less heat-insulated. Simultaneously measurements were made with cells equipped with cathodes of the types studied to compare the values resulting from calculation. The initial model was also used for general studies, in particular for studying the effects of current density in the carbon and iron. The results were confirmed or made precise by the model of the true cathodes. This report successively describes: a) the manner in which the model representing a cathode was worked out, with the simplifications and/or the hypotheses used, b) the method of solution of the problem by means of the electronic computer, and c) an example, stating the extent to which the results obtained may be realistic. Further the possibilities offered by such a study are examined. 1) CATHODE REPRESENTATION The purpose of this phase is to represent the cathode in the form of a so-called "mathematical model", that is with a simplified geometrical configuration, in order to meet the subsequent calculation requirements, while keeping to the true facts as closely as possible. This model further includes the thermal and electric conductivities with regard to temperature for the varied materials composing the cathode, as well as the thermal and electrical conditions at the model boundaries. 1.1) Guiding Principles. For calculating the temperatures and potentials the model is divided by trior-thogonal planes into a network of small elementary parallelepipeds. At the summit of these parallelepipeds' so-called mesh points, the temperatures and potentials are computed. The number of mesh points is of course limited by the capabilities of the computer, since 1) the number of equations to be solved depends on the number of mesh points selected, and 2) the amount of time spent by the computer considerably increases with increasing this number. These conditions call for the following requirements as concerns the model: a) Dimensional requirements: the calculation will be all the more accurate as the network is more closely meshed. Since the number of mesh points is limited in practice, it is necessary to restrict the dimensions of the model. b) Geometrical requirements: so as to make things easier in working out the network, the model must be given a simple geometry. In particular, it will be convenient to have the cathode so constituted that the surfaces limiting the cathode and the surfaces within the cathodes separating the different materials consist of triorthogonal planes. 1.2) Schematization of the Cathodes. This report describes the initial phase of Bureau of Mines research in the hydraulic mining of bituminous coal. The mining site and equipment are described, and the test procedures and results obtained with a bar-mounted monitor are given. Tests showed that hard Pittsburgh-bed coal can be mined hydraulically from a solid face at water pressures of 4,000 pounds per square inch.4 Coal was penetrated to a depth of 4 feet in 20 seconds with 225 gallons of water per minute coming from a 3/8-inch nozzle at 4,000 pounds per square inch pressure. Some difficulty was encountered in cutting the binders occurring in the coal; it was not possible Lu penetrate directly the overlying draw slate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a large-scaJe facility to study the self-heating of a large coal mass under conditions that simulate a gob area of a mine. The insulated coal chamber can hold up to 13 short tons (st) of coal and is provided with a forced ventilation system and computer-controlled temperature and gas measurement systems to monitor the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in the coalbed. Three experiments were completed with high-volatile C bituminous coals that exhibited high spontaneous combustion potentials in laboratory-scale tests. In the first two tests, a sustained heating was not achieved. In the third test, temperatures throughout the coalbed increased steadily from the start, with thermal runaway occurring near the center of the coalbed after 23 days. The thermal reaction wne then moved toward the front of the coalbed. The results of these tests showed that the self-heating of a large coal mass depends not just on the reactivity of the coal, but also on the particle size of the coal, the freshness of the coal surfaces, the heat-of-wetting effect, and the availability of O2 at optimum ventilation rates.

The paper deals with a process that allows the recycling in a cupola of EAF dusts with 18 % Zn. It produces dusts with zinc grade higher than 50 - 55 % and commercial cast iron with less than 200 ppm Zn, 50 ppm Pb, 0.15 % S. The paper focuses mainly on lab tests made with the aim to develop an effective formulation of self reducing - melting pellets. With such a formulation, agglomerates develop a breaking load higher than 125 - 150 kg without any thermal treatment. Zinc and lead are volatilized in the cupola with yields higher than 95 % at 1200 OC, before any melting. Sulphur is transfemed into gas and slag. All these conditions allow to lower zinc, lead and sulphur grades below the cast iron specifications. Results of first bench scale tests performed at Fonderie Piret to validate the process will be presented.

The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. Intensive smelting of copper concentrate in Teniente Converter (CT) leads to the production of high grade matte and highly oxidized slag. Smelting slag is processed in Teniente vascular slag cleaning furnace. The slag composition and forms of copper affect the slag cleaning process and final copper content. Converting of high grade matte in Pierce-Smith converter faces some difficulties in proper slagging of iron oxides. Overblowing in copper making stage allows for slag liquidation but leads to high content of copper oxide in converter slag. Converter slag recycling into CT results in the increase of the participation of oxidic copper. Separate treatment of converter slag and its impact on the forms of copper in CT slag has been analyzed. Thermodynamic properties of a system and kinetic limitations pointed out the negative effect of converter slag recycling on the forms of copper and copper recovery in slag cleaning stage. Experimental results of slag cleaning tests in a crucible scale as well as microscopic examination of laboratory and industrial slag samples supported the above analysis and permitted to formulate recommendations of separate processing of converter slag. This paper presents an analysis of mechanism of secondary fragmentation and respirable dust generation due to regrinding. In continuous miners, the recovered coal and uncleaned coal from the previous cutting cycle have to be transported through the circumference of the cutting drum, subjecting the coal to regrinding. Such regrinding comminutes the coal material utilizing kinetic energy, thus creating a great amount of respirable dust. The mechanism of a single particle subjected to regrinding is analyzed. A mathematical model is developed to describe regrinding in field conditions. The important factors influencing the comminution process are discussed in detail. Utilizing three types of coal seams, laboratory experiments are being carried out with an Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) to quantitatively evaluate the effects of some particular parameters, such as cutting velocity, depth of sump and properties of coal material, on breakage and on the amount of respirable dust generated. An orthogonal fractional factorial experimental arrangement is used to optimize experimental design. Preliminary experimental results are presented.

"The various elements of longwall mine design are reviewed, particularly as they apply to condition s in the coalfields of the Plains region of Alberta. The following recommendations are made: (1) optimum panel lengths of 1000 to 2000 metres; (2) face lengths of 100 to 150 metres; (3) the use of retreat methods; (4) the restriction of floor undulations to less than 15 degrees. IntroductionThis article considers the elements of longwall mine design and is part of a short study that has been made of the feasibility of longwall mining in the Plains region, Alberta, Canada. The Plains region, with about 20 million tonnes, accounts for more than 80% of the coal resources of Alberta. The coalbearing strata in the Plains region cover an area of about 95,000 square miles. The geological formations dip very gently toward the southwest and, from a mining point of view, may be considered horizontal. The depth of the coal seams varies from several metres to over 650 metres. However, it is not anticipated that underground mining will be extended beyond the depth range of 25 to 250 metre s.The coal seams in the Plains region have been subject to many small mining operations in the past. The majority of these small mines were limited to a depth of about 50 metres, working mainly by room-and-pillar methods, although hand-filled longwall mining was often used.The development of new underground mining operations in the Plains region will have to be on a 'start-from-scratch' basis, especially regarding the installation of equipment. Longwall mining is more mechanized than any other method of mining and requires careful attention for the selection of new and expensive equipment. There have been many proven longwall advance and retreat systems in Europe and North America; mining conditions in the Plains region are more similar to those in the United States. Therefore, it will be essential for new mining pro jects in the Plains region to commence with proven system s and equipment; in time, perhaps an experimentation process could be attempted as experience is gained.Generally, the coal face is the key factor in mine productivity, which depends a great deal on equipment reliability, training and experience of the operators. The original design of coal faces must be flexible enough to cater for potential improvements so that running time can be increased."

In attempting to describe the size classification performance of a hydrocyclone, most workers have elected to use either an equilibrium orbit theory or an non-equilibrium orbit theory. The equilibrium orbit theory has been used by the majority of workers including Lilge,' Bradley; and Yoshioka and Hotta. In applying this theory, it is argued that particles in the body of a hydrocyclone attain an equilibrium radial position where the drag force on the particle resulting from the inward radial fluid velocity is balanced by the outward centrifugal force caused by the tangential component of fluid flow. When considered over the full height of the hydrocy-clone, attainment of this radial equilibrium orbit results in the particle following a conical equilibrium envelope. It is then argued that if this envelope lies outside the envelope of "zero vertical velocity," the particle will report to the underflow, while if the equilibrium envelope lies inside the envelope of "zero vertical velocity," the particle will report to the overflow or vortex finder product. The d50-sized particle which reports in equal quantities to the underflow and overflow is assumed to correspond to particles whose equilibrium envelope is coincident with the envelope of "zero vertical velocity." In considering the equilibrium orbit theory, it is apparent that the horizontal position of the particles in the feed inlet pipe should have no effect on their ultimate destination on the hydrocyclone. Each particle should attain an equilibrium position which depends on the density, size, and shape of the particle; the density and viscosity of the fluid; and the flow patterns within the hydrocy-clone. The nonequilibrium orbit or unsteady state theory has been largely developed by Rietema4 and Mizrahi.6 Mizrahi has listed four main objections to the equilibrium orbit theory. These objections center on the short residence time in the hydrocyclone, the fact that the experimental classification curve is much less sharp than is theoretically predicted, and the absence of negative efficiency conditions in hydro cyclones operating on a feed material which is much finer in size than d50. Proponents of the nonequilibrium orbit theory argue that for a particle to discharge with the underflow it must have sufficient outward radial velocity to reach the downward-flowing region close to the hydrocyclone wall in which the flow lines are parallel to the wall and the ratio of vertical to radial velocity is constant. It is then postulated that a d50 particle entering the cyclone at the center of the feed inlet will just reach this downward-flowing region as it reaches the apex. Thus for uniform distribution of particles across the feed inlet, half the d50 particles—that is, those injected in the half of the inlet area nearest the cyclone wall —will report to the underflow while those injected in the other half will not reach the downward-flowing region and will be carried inward to the center of the cyclone and thus report in the overflow. The exact thickness of the down-ward-flowing region of fluid adjacent to the outer wall of the hydrocyclone is uncertain but Mizrahi considers it to be equal to the apex radius minus the air core radius. Particles larger than d50 have a greater outward centrifugal force acting on them than the d50 particles and may reach the wall even if injected at a distance from the wall greater than Di/2 (Di is inlet diameter). Conversely, particles smaller than d50 may not reach the wall even if injected at a distance less than Di/2 from the cyclone wall. Since the equations put forward by the proponents of both theories yield approximately the same values of d50, it is not possible to decide between these theories by measurement of d50. It should be possible however to examine the theories by injecting a small stream of solids into the feed inlet of a hydrocyclone running on clear water. If the efficiency or classification curve is measured for various horizontal injection positions, then the curves should be coincident if the equilibrium orbit theory holds. The effect of fragmentation size distribution as it relates to front end loader productivity was evaluated by comparing loader cycle times to fragmentation size of the shot rock. At Gold Mine in Southern Utah, a gold deposit containing both limestone and sandstone formations were blasted in the same shot.
