This paper casts a light on the sometimes murky world that lies between base metals product æout the gateÆ, and money in the bank. Whether your base metals are leaving the mine as a refined product, or as an ore or concentrate, the generally accepted method of value determination is a London Metal Exchange price, usually measured at some point after the material has left your control. In this paper, the structure and operation, regulation and the reasons for the use of the London Metal Exchange are explored. In addition, the risks and opportunities that terminal market pricing provides to mine managers are explained, with particular reference to hedging. The paper also deals with the structure of the sales contract, including management of shipping issues, agreement of delivered quality, documentation and administrative issues. The selection of counterparties, the role of traders in the market and the growing influence of China and India as base metal consumers and competitors are also addressed.

An understanding of the physical processes involved in breaking rock with explosives will lead to better blasting techniques. In this chapter known rock breakage principles will be outlined, some conjectural ideas will be discussed, and areas needing further study will be pointed out. The principles outlined will serve as a basis for the design of blasting rounds described in the following chapter. 7.2-1. Factors Important to Rock Fragmentation. The efficacy of explosives as tools for rock fragmentation lies in their ability to deliver almost instantaneously large amounts of energy to a limited portion of the rock. When an explosive charge is detonated in a drill hole, its energy is released in a very small fraction of a second in the form of gas at extremely high pressure and temperature. The mechanics of the transfer of this energy to the rock and the resulting breakage are complex and not completely understood. Factors that have been identified as important to the fragmentation process may be grouped in three categories: explosive parameters, charge loading parameters, and rock parameters. EXPLOSIVE PARAMETERS. Explosive parameters known to influence breakage are density, detonation velocity, detonation impedance, detonation pressure, gas volume, and available energy. Detonation pressure is probably the best indicator of an explosive's ability to break solid hard rock. Detonation pressure is roughly proportional to the product of density and the square of the detonation velocity. The relative ability of different explosives to transmit their pressure to stress in a given rock is function of their detonation impedances. Detonation impedance is the product of density and detonation velocity. Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study copper ion adsorption, and its effect on subsequent sulfide collector adsorption, on pyrite and pyroxene minerals under flotation related conditions. Copper was found to adsorb on both of these minerals and cause enhanced sulfide collector adsorption. The distribution and depth profile of copper and collector on these mineral surfaces were obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. The results of this study have provided a valuable insight to understanding pyrite and gangue flotation observed frequently in operating plants.

Discussion of the paper of R. H. RICHARDS and BOYD DUDLEY, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 191.5, pp. 67 to 72. R. H. RICHARDS, Boston, Mass.-I believe that the manner of working for efficiency in almost all lines is to study the conditions of highest efficiency, and then to measure what is being clone. We can then see how near we have approached the highest efficiency. Spigots in practice often use many times the water theoretically needed. There are places where that is necessary for safety reasons. There are, however, places where it is unnecessary, and in these places it seems to me that this work of Mr. Dudley's will be a great help to the mill man to arrive at the greatest economy of water and highest efficiency. "The behaviour of minerals in the Mount Wright spiral circuit was investigated to find methods of improving iron oxide mineral liberation and recovery. The feeds, concentrates and tailings from rougher, cleaner and recleaner spirals in one mill line were sampled before and after the sizing screen openings were reduced from 2 mm to 1.6 mm. Sized fractions of each sample were analyzed with the MP-SEM-IPS image analysis system at CANMET to determine mineral quantities and liberation characteristics of the iron oxide minerals. Mass balance techniques were used to calculate stream recoveries of iron, silica, total iron oxide minerals, hema¬tite, goethite, quartz, ferromagnesian silicates, and liberated and locked total iron oxide minerals for each sieve fraction.The reduction of the sizing screen openings increased the ap¬parent liberation of the total iron oxide minerals in the screen undersize from 89% to 94% and raised the over-all iron recovery from 84.4% to 85.3%. Apparent liberation of iron oxide minerals in the cleaner sand also increased from 70% to 85%, but the – 75 µm fraction re¬mained the only fraction containing an acceptable amount of liber¬ated iron oxide minerals in each case. Due to limitations of spiral and grinding efficiency it is recommended that the cleaner sand be screened at 300 m, the +300 m fraction be reground, and the – 300 p.m fraction be rerouted to the rougher spirals.The amount of fine liberated iron oxide minerals (– 106 m) lost in the tailings was 46 TPH in mill line 3. This value represents 41 wt % of the free fine iron oxide minerals, or 7 wt % of the total iron oxide minerals in the spiral feed. Further work is needed to investigate the possibility of recovering this material by other methods.Middling iron particles (010 50%) and presumably free gangue in the size range –300+ 75 m tend to be recovered by spirals by entrapment."

The fundamental challenge facing mineral and metal companies is how to create sustainable value while operating within mandated strategic bounds, identified constraints, and variable market and economic conditions. This can be achieved by allowing the fixed physical nature of the mineral asset to drive definition of the optimal technical solution to mining and processing activities, and developing and resourcing a strategically aligned portfolio of production entities that creates flexibility to near- and longer-term business environment shifts, i.e. a production mix that allows variation of output to respond to short term market variation, within a long term context. The practical achievement of this outcome is enabled by the concept of strategic long term planning. The core elements of strategic long term planning in the metals and minerals industry, and the relationship between them, are expanded. The strategic long term planning framework is a logic construct that enables delivery of an optimized, strategically-aligned business plan from the mineral asset portfolio using a set of tools and techniques with a common language, standards, systems and processes to align decisions and actions on a cyclical basis.

Stabilizing fine coal refuse ponds for reclamation at Monterey Coal Company's No. 1 Mine has been difficult. Entrained water in the stored refuse causes liquefaction as reclamation caps are placed, resulting in additional material requirements than originally projected to stabilize the pond surface. Laboratory results indicate that in-place refuse densities may be substantially improved at No. I Mine by converting from a single-point to a managed slurry distribution system. Increased densities result in improved storage efficiency, less entrained moisture and a more stable refuse mass, thereby providing an improved working surface for reclamation and improved post-closure cover stability.

Modern coal processing plants utilize multiple cleaning circuits to efficiently beneficiate different size coal fractions of run-of-mine coal. An older plant optimization approach is to maintain average product quality from individual cleaning circuits at the same level as the given product specifications for the overall plant. However, many past studies indicate that the equalization of product quality approach fails to produce the maximum plant-yield. A newer approach, known as equalization of incremental product quality, requires that the incremental product quality obtained from each circuit be maintained at the same level to satisfy the overall plant product quality. This approach ensures the maximization of plant yield while satisfying a single product quality constraint. However, while dealing with multiple product quality constraints, this approach by itself may not be sufficient to obtain the desired maximum yield. For the simple reason that the dirtiest particle (or group of particles) with respect to one quality constraint may not be the same particle (or group of particles) with respect to another quality constraint, the mass yield versus product quality relationship generated by equalizing different incremental product quality may not be exactly the same. Therefore, an additional search technique has to be utilized to determine the global-maximum value of plant yield. Thus, the main objective of this study was to utilize an emerging optimization technique, known as genetic algorithms (GA) to maximize plant yield while satisfying multiple product quality constraints. The maximum plant yield obtained from this approach was nearly same as the maximum yield obtained by the incremental product quality approach while satisfying one specific product quality constraint. The GA was applied on a coal preparation plant that utilizes four circuit operations - heavy medium bath, heavy medium cyclone, spiral and froth flotation. The results showed that using GA as an optimization process gives 2.56% higher yield that will result in additional revenue generation of $5,120,000 per annum than average product quality approach.

Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted in a mechanically stirred aeration vessel to determine the rusting abilities of aerated water in the presence of various catalysts compared to the industrially used ammonium chloride. The catalysts used were tartaric acid and citric acid, firstly by themselves, and then in later experiments mixed with ammonium chloride. From these experiments it was found that leaching of iron from reduced ilmenite in the presence of either tartaric acid or its sodium salt was much slower than in the presence of ammonium chloride. Citric acid or its sodium salt also give a slower rate of leaching than the ammonium chloride system, but citric acid and its sodium salt mixed in equal proportions produced a rate of leaching approximately twice as fast as the standard ammonium chloride system. When tartaric acid was mixed with ammonium chloride the leaching rate was found to be equivalent to the leaching rate of the same amount of ammonium chloride alone, thus indicating that tartaric acid made no contribution to the leaching in this svstem_

Outline of the Process THE Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace y combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911.

In this paper, problem of short-term production planning for dimension stone quarries was mathematically modeled using a binary integer programming. The model includes an objective function, which was founded as the minimization of the costs due to the total cutting planes of the blocks. This objective may cause to maximization of the net present value (NPV) in dimension stone quarries. During the mathematical modeling the essential constraints are dimension stone quarry capacities and the market demand, block accessibility for the equipment and the reserve constraints. As a base, an optimal size and shape of extractable blocks should be first assigned according to the available extraction technique and the market demand, in order to create a geological block model. Then an economical block model is provided by assignment of a value of ?one? for ore blocks and ?zero? for waste. Maximum profitability and minimum amount of the ore wastage can be gained using this plan and modeling.

Ground control problems in sublevel caving become evident as the rock pressure increases with depth. Recently, a finite element analysis of the stability problem of the sublevel caving method was completed by the author. This paper summarizes the results of stress analysis in sublevel extraction drifts under different field stress conditions by using linear elastic and nonlinear elastic-plastic finite element modeling techniques. A critical stress concentration will occur in the uppermost sublevel drifts beneath the caved area or blasted ore area. During the blasting and drawing cycle, a tensile and shear failure condition could develop in the center extraction drift when it would be mined last. Under a high horizontal stress field condition, almost all tensile stress in the back of the extraction drifts will be eliminated and only slight yield can be seen in the floor of the extraction drifts. Compared to the cases under the stress field where vertical stress is the dominant factor, the total yielding zone will be greatly reduced because of an in- creasing horizontal stress field with depth. However, it is predicted that the center of each ore column side will experience excessive shear stress that probably will result in ore failure. The two major conclusions drawn from this study to improve the overall stability of sublevel caving are: (1) the drift width must be carefully controlled and an appropriate stoping sequence selected; and (2) the sublevel caving method can be used in deep min

Realizing that aluminum will have a great role to play in the coming industrialization of China, Chinese geologists have long been looking about for some aluminum deposits. The possible sources appear to be alunite, the alumina-rich shales, and the bauxite deposits. The locations of deposits are shown in Fig. I. Alunite Our attention was first directed to the alunite deposits along the southeastern coast of China. Table I summarizes the reserves now believed to exist in that region. Other alunite deposits have been found in Kiangpei, Szechuan province; Charming. Liuyang and Hsanshan, Hunnan province Tsingchow and Chowyuan, Shantung province. No reserve figures are available. High-alumina Shale Shale high enough in aluminum to serve as a source of that metal has been found in northeastern China(Tab1e 2). In Manchuria, the Manchuria Light Metals Co., at Antung and Fushun, operating under Japanese control, has been the only active producer of aluminum. During the first phase of excavation, the data obtained from monitoring of the behavior of Mudstone layers were used to recommend extra support measures. These data are also used to design the support of the powerhouse during its extension phase. Accurate mechanical and geological information of the roof strata is vital for roof bolting design in underground mines. In order to obtain such information in a timely manner, a research has been under way to develop a technology for mapping the roof geology using the drilling parameters acquired during the roof bolting operations. In this paper, a systematic approach has been proposed for determining the rock strengths using the acquired real-time drilling parameters. A computer simulation program based on the mathematic model has been developed to verify the approach and to study its sensitivity. The method has been used to interpret the acquired drilling data.

Feldspar mining in Canada came to an end during 1972 after many years of continuous activity. The deposits are not exhausted and the domestic demand for this product is expected to continue at about the same level as in recent years. The size of the industry does not justify the installation of expensive equipment in the mills, but it is believed that a modest profit could be made by a small operation using rudimentary methods of separation. Largescale and accurate mapping of the pegmatite dykes could help in planning mining operations for a better recovery of a uniform product.

CARBON-BLACK shipments, which had declined in the latter art of 1953, remained low in 1954 until after settlement of the labor strike that occurred in the rubber industry in July and August. The production of new model automobiles in the last quarter of the year spurred the demand for rubber tires and consequently the demand for carbon black. Total shipments of 1,498 million pounds for the year were 4 percent below 1953.
