IT IS not often that bore hole surveys can be checked by actual civil engineering methods. A recent Arizona survey was checked by normal surveying methods and the comparison of the results should be of value to both oil and mining men. During the summer of 1948 the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, at its Copper Queen property near Bisbee, Ariz., drilled a 1245 ft, 8 in. diam, churn drill-hole in a mineralized area and cased part of it, intending to use it to transfer mill tailings for stope fill. The hole, as frequently occurs, was not straight, and, in endeavoring to locate the bottom in the underground workings, they found no evidence of the hole at the underground coordinates directly below the surface location.

The following is a detailed description of the blasting procedures used in the successful demolition of the Stave River bridge, Mission, British Columbia, Canada. This highway bridge spans a highly sensitive salmon-spawning river. Demolition of the bridge took place in a high liability situation in close proximity to sensitive structures. The new highway bridge carrying an exposed 150mm diameter gas line was located only 1.5 meters away. The bridge piers were blasted only seven meters from overhead power lines. Control of blast vibration, flyrock, and underwater overpressure was critical to the success of the operation. Electrical sequential blasting was used to ensure that blast vibration on the new bridge structure was kept below 50mm per second.

Mineral extraction activities in the deep sea will expose the local fauna to potentially toxic compounds. However, very few data are currently available on the complex ecotoxicological risks to deep-sea fauna from the potential release of heavy metals, trace metals and Rare Earth Elements (REEs). Nonetheless, this is key information essential to support the regulation of industrial activities in the deep sea. One of the fundamental issues that the MIDAS project will address consists in exploring the concept of whether the existing toxicity test protocols and limits established in shallow-water species are applicable to deep-sea mining. We will detail the specific challenges to recommending exposure limits within the deep sea and show preliminary results of comparative toxicity tests in the shallow-water and in the deep-sea environment.

The metallurgical response of the Point Leamington deposit has been studied. Two series of bench tests were conducted and various ore samples and flotation products were examined using image analysis techniques. The majority of sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains in this texturally complex ore were found to be smaller than 10 micrometers. Copper recoveries were low with losses mainly as fine inclusions in pyrite. Sphalerite recoveries were somewhat better due to a generally coarser habit. Gold and silver recoveries were also low and only solid solution silver was identified in the ore. The deposit shows poor economic prospects unless additional tonnage of high grade zinc ore can be delineated.

THE earliest accounts we have of Japan represent the country as having great mineral wealth, especially of precious and useful metals. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, in the thirteenth century, writes of "Zipangu:” "They have gold in greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible. The king does not allow of its being exported. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace. The entire roof is covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal ; many of the apartments have tables of pure gold of considerable thickness, and the windows also have golden ornaments." Marco Polo also gives an account of an unsuccessful Tartar expedition against Japan, prompted by the supposed great wealth of the country. Columbus also, as well as many other explorers, were attracted and encouraged by these prevalent reports of the wealth of the islands of Zipangu. Kaempfer, writing in 1727, speaks of the great mineral wealth of Japan, and especially of the abundance of gold, which, he says, is found in many provinces. The Portuguese and Dutch, while they had trading-posts in Japan, furnished tangible evidence of the truth of the early reports. Between 1550 and 1639 the Portuguese merchants sent home from Japan nearly three hundred million dollars' worth of bullion, most of which was gold. As the relative value of equal weights of gold and silver was then six to one, while in Europe, at the same time, it was nearly twelve to one, the exchange of silver bullion for gold was by no means an unimportant part of their business. After the Portuguese, the Dutch continued the exportation of bullion, and the exchange of silver for gold, though with less profit, as the relative value of gold increased with the demand. Between 1649 and 1671 the Dutch traders sent home over two hundred million dollars in bullion, of which, however, nearly two-thirds was silver. In 1671 the Japanese government, alarmed at the rapid rate at which the precious metals were leaving the country, issued an edict forbidding the exportation of gold or silver, under heavy penalties, which had the immediate effect of stopping this trade. AN increased demand for information in regard to the effect of gaseous elements in steel has accompanied the recognition of the importance of grain size. Attempts to correlate grain-size characteristics with gas con-tent, particularly oxygen in solution or in the form of included metallic oxides, have not been universally successful. Certain definite effects of dissolved gases are recognized; specifically, the role of hydrogen in causing internal cracks or "flakes" and that of nitrogen in preventing excessive grain growth of ferritic chromium steels. When irregular behavior or properties are found in a well-known steel and no definite cause for the abnormality may be assigned on the basis of chemical and metallographic tests, dissolved gases are frequently blamed as the culprits. The solubilities of hydrogen1 and nitrogen2 in pure liquid iron are known but of the ternary systems, iron-alloying element-gas, only the Fe-Si-N3 and Fe-Cr-N systems have received attention and here the study was confined to liquid alloys. Krivobok4 published a curve show-ing the solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-Cr alloys but gave no informa-tion on the experimental procedure employed. The considerable experimental work reported on the Cr-N binary alloys has been reviewed by Hansen.5 It is generally agreed that the nitride CrN is a stable phase although the existence of nitrides within limited temperature ranges of stability, viz., Cr3N2 and Cr2N, has been disputed, Adcock6 and others7 have reported a eutectic between Cr and CrN at 1580°C., although the supporting evidence is not complete.

The purpose of this work is to study and make comparative analysis of germanium extraction and related valuable components of the sublimates from the burning of domestic power coals (product 1) and germanium sulfide materials, which are a waste of lead-zinc production (product 2), by traditional chemical methods (distillation of germanium in the form of tetrachloride from raw and preliminary burning source) and by microbial bioleaching of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. The dependence of the germanium extraction by chemical methods from phase composition of the initial raw materials was installed. The germanium tetrachloride extraction from products 1 and 2 were 78.50 and 19.52%, respectively. Such difference in indexes on extraction, is caused by germanium confinement as concomitant trace component to the basic phases to carriers. The share of acid-non-soluble compounds (tetragonal modification GeO2 and silikogermanaties) in the product 1 account for 21.5 % of germanium. Ratio between acid-soluble and acid-not -soluble germanium forms are 19.52 and 80.48 %, respectively, in the product 2. Our experiments have shown, that implementation of restorative firing (with addition of 30-40 % carbon at 1150 0?) of sulfide product 2 considerably impacted on the extraction of germanium tetrachloride (91.76 %) in comparison with its low enough extraction at straight distillation of hydrochloric acid (19.52 %). The results are confirmed by a set of physical methods. The results of processing the same so-called hard phase?s material (product 2) with the help of microorganisms are presented. It Has been established, that selected strains of bacteria are capable of extracting from initial raw materials not only macro components (iron, zinc, lead, manganese, aluminum, nickel), but also micro impurity of rare metals (gallium, germanium, zirconium). It is important that these metals were not extracted by traditional chemical methods (with application of aggressive conditions and heats) independently of the phase composition of the source. Almost complete extractions of germanium in solution using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria take place in the first day of the process independently of the phase composition of the source and the type strain. The results have practical significance and can be the basis for developing a unified biotechnological method of technogenic waste processing with a purpose of their sterilization and detoxification with simultaneous obtaining concentrates of valuable metals. An intermediate compound that has been identified as Niab is observed to form as a decomposition product from supersaturaled Ni-Nb solid solutions during aging at temperatures between approximately 300" and 500°C. On the basis of data from electron microscopy and selected-area diffraction, the structure of this compound has been determined as fct with a = b - 3a0 and c = a, wlzere a,, is the lattice parameter of the parent solid solution. The compound consists of close-packed layers with triangular ordering, where the niobiutrl atoms are separated by two nickel atoms ([long- close?-packed directions. A nine layer stacking sequence is required to describe the proposed structure. STUDIES of the Ni-Nb binary system have been limited primarily to phase diagram determinations,'-4 investigations of high-temperature equilibrium phases,5"1 and the determination of the influence of deformation on the structure of the equilibrium compound.8 The nickel-rich portion of the binary system is reported to be of the simple eutectic type in which the maximum solubility of 12.7 at. pct Nb occurs at 1282"c.' The two-phase field below the eutectic temperature is bounded by the a fcc solid solution and an orthorhombic Ni3Nb compound. No metastable phases have been reported in previous investigations. In transformation studies of certain nickel-base commercial alloys that contain niobium, two ordered metastable compounds containing niobium have been shown to precipitate from the solid solution, both of which have been identified as y' and have the composition NisNb or Ni,Nb. One compound has been reported to have the bct DOz2 type Al3Ti structure" and the other the cubic LI2 type Cu3Au structure.9,11 In the present work on Ni-Nb binary alloys a metastable y' compound has not been detected after conventional quenching and aging treatments. An anomalous behavior was noted in electrical resistivity measurements. in alloys containing between 7 to 12 at. pct Nb when aging treatments were performed below 500°C after fast quenching from 1250°C. Transmission electron microscopy has shown that this behavior is caused by the formation of a low-temperature precipitate of unreported structure type and composition. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Several Ni-Nb alloys, containing up to 11.5 at. pct Nb. were prepared by either levitation melting and casting in copper molds or by induction melting in alumina crucibles; both techniques employed purified helium gas as a protective atmosphere. The purity of the nickel and niobium used to make the alloys was 99.98 wt pct Ni and 99.9 wt pct Nb. The composition and homogeneity of the alloys were checked by weight measurements and by electron microprobe analysis. The induction-melted alloys were homogenized for 100 hr at 1100°C. The resistivity specimens were prepared from rods swaged to 2.5 mm and the electron microscopy specimens were cut from sheet that was rolled to 0.4 mm and thinned using a modified Bollmann technique." The elevated-temperature solution treatments were carried out in a purified helium atmosphere followed by direct quenching into a 10 pct NaCl solution at 23°C. Additional protection against oxidation of the samples during solution treatment was accomplished by using tantalum foil as a "getter" in the furnace. The specimens were aged at various temperatures in salt baths controlled to +2oC. A Leeds and Northrup K5 potentiometer was used to make electrical resistivity measurements on specimens immersed in liquid nitrogen. Electron microscopy and diffraction studies were carried out with JEM-7 and Philips EM-200 microscopes operating at 100 kv. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Ni-Nb alloys containing between 7 and 11.5 at. pct Nb that have been solution-treated in the range 1220" to 1280°C and quenched to 23°C undergo a precipitation reaction when aged in the temperature range 300" to 500°C. Precipitation was detected by selected-area electron diffraction after aging a specimen for as little as 30 sec at 350°C) whereas the reaction was well-advanced after aging for 150 hr at 475°C. Electrical resistivity measurements were used to monitor the progress of the precipitation reaction. In the present experiments the nucleation process for precipitation required a high solution temperature and a rapid quench into brine. The presence of aluminum, iron? and carbon in amounts totaling less than 1 wt pct was found by electron diffraction to completely suppress the formation of the low-temperature precipitate that has been detected in the binary alloy. Electron diffraction techniques were used to determine the structure of the precipitates that formed during the decomposition of the Ni-Nb supersaturated solid solutions. Figs. l(a) through l(d) show electron diffraction patterns oriented to the [loo], [110], [lll], and [I031 zone axes of the matrix. Areas of reciprocal space between these sections were investigated by slowly varying the orientations of the crystal under study; this procedure revealed no reflections other than those depicted in Fig. 1. The presence of super-lattice reflections at points coincident with the matrix reflections was confirmed by the examination of an almost completely transformed structure. The electrode in a slag-resistance electric furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power, i.e. heat needed for the operation. The control parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input sequence all of which are closely interrelated. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distributions and thus the furnace dimensions. Heat flow models concerning vertical, horizontal and combined two-dimensional flows are discussed. All these considerations are based on the experimentally determined slag properties such as its resistivity.

The mines of the country are called upon to bear a very large part of the enormous taxes to be raised for 1917 and later years. The Internal Revenue Bureau, which is charged with the assessment and collection of these taxes, desires that the taxation laws shall be administered in a fair and business-like way. The application to mines, however, which have wasting assets, involves questions of particular complication and difficulty. To meet this situation, there has been established in. the Income Tax Branch, a Section of Mine Valuation in which these specific problems of the industry will be handled by competent engineers. But it is realized that something more than this is required for the satisfactory application of the tax laws to the mines, namely, as complete understanding as possible between the Government and the taxpayer, a spirit of cooperation as between the two and every possible assistance and advice from mine owners and mining engineers.

The following paper embodies a report which I made on the filter-press treatment of slimes at the Liberty Bell mine, Telluride, Colo. At the time this report was submitted, the management deemed it wiser to defer the installation of so costly a plant as the one required, in the hope that some of the many investigators in the field might soon evolve a cheaper and more perfect method of slimes-treatment, and one better suited to the conditions at Telluride. The Liberty Bell ore consists essentially of quartz and clay, with iron pyrites disseminated through the quartz in very fine particles. There is considerable iron and manganese stain in some of the ore, the latter especially in the clays, which are sometimes quite black. Occasionally particles of galena, zincblende, gray copper and a few other minerals are seen, but they are comparatively rare, and not in sufficient quantity to affect considerations of treatment. Free gold is occasionally seen in the quartz, and one or two instances of mire silver have been observed. The milling-plant consists of an 80-stamp amalgamating mill which crushes through 20-mesh screens; 20 Wilfley concentrating tables, taking out, in iron sulphides, about 2 per cent. of the total ore crushed; and a cyanide plant consisting of two tiers of 33 ft. vats, five in each tier, fed by revolving pipe-die tributers. The slimes overflow from the upper settling tanks through gates with adjustable outlets, and thence to a large canvas-plant, which efects only a small saving. This slimes product, of which about 100 tons escape per day (or 38 per cent. of the total ore crushed), contains about 3 per cent. of dry solids. Of this approximately 93 per cent. will pass a 200-mesh screen. The slimes range in value between $3.90 and $4.87 per ton, the values being about equally distributed between gold and silver. Coal strata strength is included as a vague term in most of the pillar design formulas, either as a questionable fraction of the intact coal strength or a size-dependent relationship for scaling down a laboratory value to the in situ strength. In order to introduce a coal mass strength criterion which would be compatible with current design trends, the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system was revised to incorporate factors governing coal seam behavior under load. A number of adjustment factors have been proposed but, the most significant change, is the introduction of a parameter representing the heterogeneity of the seam. When developing a rock mass strength criterion, it is necessary to find the constants of appropriate intact rock strength criteria and to establish a correlation to scale down these constants as a function of the RMR. For four intact rock strength criteria, the constants for coal were found using the Nelder-Mead method. To correlate the constants of the strength criteria with the coal seam quality values (RMR), a procedure was developed based on finite element modeling of in situ large scale tests for which the RMR was known. A new coal strata strength criterion is proposed, in a principal stress formulation, for modeling coal pillar behavior when the stress field in a pillar is known. A linear relationship is also given, to be used when empirical pillar strength formulas are used to design pillars. The proposed criteria have been evaluated in a case study.

Substructures in explosively deformed and annealed ß brass have been examined by electron microscopy. In the explosively deformed condition, the structure contains a large density of straight screw type dislocations. Subsequent annealing up to 300oC produces low angle boundaries, which are characterized by superlattice dislocations, and expanded and contracted nodes. Evidence is given where two a(111) superlattice dislocations combine to form two a(001) superlattice dislocations. It is also shown that annealing at 400°C the networks disappear and that quenching from 400" C produces square and circular prismatic dislocation loops that lie on (100) and (111) planes, respectively. THE purpose of this work was to determine the effects of explosive deformation and subsequent annealing in a superlattice using electron microscopy. One of the first observations of explosively deformed structures was made by Hornbogen1 on a iron. Hornbogen found that screw dislocations were most prominent in the explosively deformed structure. He explained this result by suggesting that the edge components of dislocation loops move with the velocity of the shock front leaving a trail of extended screw components. Kressel and Brown2 observed explosively deformed Fe3A1, which is basically a body-centered type of superlattice in terms of dislocation geometry, and found that, as in the case of iron, screw dislocations were most prominent. It was also observed2 that, in cold-rolled and explosively deformed nickel, screw dislocations did not predominate, but rather a uniform network of dislocations was present in which the orientation of the dislocations was random. (Cell structures also have been observed by Nolder and Thomas3 for copper and by Johari and Thomas* for nickel). Kressel and Brown2 discussed the difference between dislocation morphology for bee and fee metals in terms of dislocation mobilities. They suggested that edge dislocations have a greater mobility than screw dislocations in bee metals but not in fee metals. Thus, the idea offered originally by Hornbogen1 is not valid since it should apply equally to fee and bee systems but does not. The results of recent work by Mikkola and cohens on explosively deformed Cu2Au are consistent with other observations for fee metals. They found that dislocations were randomly arranged but there was no significant cell formation. At high shock pressures, deformation twins are produced in fee metals.' High pressures in bee metal should induce the bee — fee transformation while the metal is under pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Cu-Zn alloy used in this work contained 51.4 wt pct Cu. Specimens of 0.5 in. diam and 0.012 in.

Coal is produced, in commercial quantities, in thirty-five of the fifty-five counties of West Virginia. Oil and gas are produced, commercially, in forty-two counties. So, you may readily see that coal, oil and gas arc closely related as to production areas. Many of the West Virginia coal mines are studded with oil and gas wells, as drilling has been done in thirty-two of the coal bearing counties. When the drilling of oil and gas wells was placed under the regulatory control of the Department of Mines on June I, 1929, it was estimated, by the State Geological Survey, that 64,000 wells had been drilled in West Virginia and that 34,000 wells were then being operated as oil and gas producers. No records of many of these remaining 30,000 abandoned wells exist and some of them remain a standing menace to safety as our coal extraction continues. Of a total of 13,100 new wells drilled since June 1929, approximately 5200 have been drilled through coal measures. Approximately 7000 wells, which were drilled through coal measures, have been abandoned in the same period of time. Many of these wells were drilled prior to the enactment of the oil and gas laws. Prior to the enactment of the Oil and Gas Law, which established the Oil and Gas Division of thc Department of Mines in 1929, there had been several mine ex-plosions attributable to cutting into un- charted wells and the improper plugging of other wells. The most serious explosion was that of Mines No. 47 and No. 49 of the Consolidation Coal Co. in Marion Co., when one of the so-called plugged wells leaked or seeped through some 80 ft of strata to the coal bed elevation, filling the mine with gas, the gas being ignited, killing a good many men and wrecking two coal mines. Legislation, to combat well hazards to coal mines, was slow in coming. In 1928, R. M. Lambie, then Chief of the Dept. of Mines, got sufficient support from coal, oil and gas interests to get the legislature to pass our present oil and gas laws. These statutes not only protected the coal industry but went a long way toward conserving the oil and gas resources of our state. Before drilling for oil or gas on any tract of land, known to be underlaid with one or more workable seams of coal, the well operator is required to submit a map of the area showing the location of the proposed well, and to send a copy to the Dept. of Mines and a copy to the coal operator. If no objections to the location of the proposed well are made by the coal operator within ten days, a drilling permit and a number for the well are then issued and work may proceed. If, however, the location of the proposed well is objected to by the coal operator, on the grounds that the location of the well will interfere with present mine operations, projected workings, or otherwise cause a dangerous condition, the operator may file a written objection with the Dept. of Mines.

The innovative Soil-Cement Mixing Wall Technique, developed independently in Japan, consists of mixing in-place soils with cement grout using multi-axis augers and mixing paddles to construct overlapping soil-cement columns. The applications of overlapped soil-cement columns include cutoff walls for groundwater control and structural diaphragm walls for excavation support. The special features of this technique include water tightness, versatile strength design, and efficient installation in subsurface materials varying from clayey soils to cobbles or soft rocks. Through the introduction of two recent subway projects in Japan, this paper presents the design parameters, construction procedure, quality control and performance of soil-cement wall for excavation support and groundwater control.

Electroless nickel-boron alloys are well known for their corrosion resistance and hardness. An electroless nickel-boron layer was successfully deposited first on the chemical conversion pre-treated AZ31 alloy and also on the Ni-P coating which was deposited on the conversion coating. The electroless bath contained nickel sulphate and dimethylamine borane (DMAB) as main salts and the samples were activated by a 5 g/L AgNO3 solution before the electroless plating process. The presence of the conversion coating between the nickel coating and the AZ31 substrate acted as a barrier and prevented corrosion of the alloy. The morphology of the nickel-boron layer was studied using SEM. The crystal structure and the composition were examined by EDS and the hardness was measured. The corrosion behaviour of the nickel-boron layer deposited on the conversion coating and on the Ni-P coating was studied using potentiodynamic polarization in a 0.5M NaC1 solution. A saturated standard calomel electrode was used as a reference electrode. The results show that the nickel-boron coatings had a significantly better corrosion resistance than the AZ31.

"The successful design of a new mine water pumping system is in part dependent upon the accuracy with which the operating conditions can be forecast. This paper outlines the data which should be obtained on water quantity and quality. Methods of modifying the quality are also discussed. Some pumping systems for disposal of sludge are described, citing operating examples. The various types of mine dewatering pumps are described in terms of design characteristics as they affect operating efficiency and installation and maintenance costs. Piping system parameters are outlined. Finally, a hypothetical case study of pumping from a depth of 3,000 ft is assessed, with particular reference to capital costs.IntroductionMany mine operators would agree that the pumping system usually receives a low engineering priority during the design stage, and as a consequence causes some of the most frustrating problems during production. For a ""dry"" mine (up to 200 gpm), design of the pumping system may indeed be simple, but outside of the potash industry such mines are not common. For ""wet"" mines, the pumping system is important because it significantly affects the initial capital and on-going energy costs of the mine and, in the area of sludge disposal, the working conditions and production costs. Indeed, a failure in the pumping system usually has serious, and sometimes disastrous, consequences.The intent of this paper is to outline the factors which should be considered in the design of a pumping system and to describe the types of pumps used in mine dewatering and relate them to practical operating systems."
