Production planning techniques, particularly a production scheduling model are proposed for use in taconite mining in Minnesota. Applications of the scheduling model, on a two-year mine plan, which evaluates the equipment involved, are detailed. Data and tables are included. INTRODUCTION Fifty years ago Walter Swart, a mining engineer investigating the Minnesota taconites for the Jackling interests, made this report: "There is no doubt in my mind that this taconite mining is a game worth playing and that it can be played to a successful finish. It seems now only a question of men, money, methods and details."' The prosperous industry envisioned by Swart and other taconite pioneers is today a reality. Its growth has been spurred by technological advances in mining and beneficiation, depletion of natural ore reserves, and improvement of the economic climate. However, the massive problems that were solved to make this development possible are only a foreshadowing of the questions of "men, money, methods and details" that will be encountered in the future. The increasing demands for higher quality taconite pellets have already forced producers to examine better methods of quality control for their operations. THE NEED FOR PRODUCTION SCHEDULING The maintenance of fairly constant crude ore characteristics is of major importance to mill quality control. Through careful mixing of ore from storage bins, the concentrator staff can partially reduce the deviations of the feed analysis from the analysis desired. However, the limited effectiveness of bin mixing systems has caused some mining companies to utilize large capacity blending piles to reduce grade variations. Although the analysis of material being reclaimed from such a pile is relatively uniform, raw materials still must be scheduled from the mine into the pile in such a manner that the average analysis of all material is close to the feed analysis prescribed by the mill. PRODUCTION SCHEDULING MODEL Minnesota taconite mining companies have used three analyses to estimate how a certain ore will react to concentration. These factors are the crude magnetic iron content of the ore, the iron content of the plant concentrate produced from the ore at a standard grind, and the grindability index of the ore. The actual laboratory tests used to determine these factors have been described by Apuli.2 These data are obtained from analysis of diamond drill cores, and are the established criteria used by mine planning engineers to formulate taconite production schedules. Variations in the grade of mine output should be controlled by any production scheduling system. However, to be truly practical, production scheduling methods must also consider many of the less tangible variables that affect mine operation. These include pit layout, available equipment, and ownership of ore leases. The number and scope of the variables inherent in this type of mine planning suggested that a computer simulation could be used to solve the problem. The preparation of information for use with a computer simulation program was the initial phase of this project. Meaningful data was developed from logs of diamond drill cores. Analyses were related to their respective areas of influence by means of mine maps, Fig. 1. The three assay variables and tonnages for each area were punched on cards. In addition to these values, a location code number was punched in the first eight columns of the cards. This code is explained as follows: Column 1 Bench number Column 2 Quadrant location as determined by mine reference lines Columns 3-5 East-west coordinate Columns 6-8 North-south coordinate The heart of any simulation techniques is a well engineered mathematical model. To develop a model for taconite production scheduling, the relationship between the three assay variables had to be established. Today's rapidly shrinking world requires a common language of measurements, a consistent system which could be used by everyone. The S.I. system of units is generally accepted as such and is already in use by a great majority of nations in the world. The change to S.I. units is also slowly taking place in U.S. engineering practice. The transition period is difficult and long because it takes time to get familiar with the new system, to start "feeling" values in new units. Instruments, formulas, computer programs, survey grids, etc. have to be converted or exchanged. The transition period should be used not only for substitution of units, but also for rationalization of presently used calculation methods. This paper examines the major parameters of mine ventilation from the above point of view and discusses a system which is much simpler and more consistent than the American Unit System still in use in the United States. In October 1979, the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME decided to introduce the S.I. unit system in all its publications including the periodical "Mining Engineering", and since February 1980 the system has been used consistently, not only in SME publications but in all conferences and meetings organized by this Society. The authors have no intention of explaining the details of the S.I. system in general. Any reader can find this information in many available publications and conversion tables, and in particular in the ASTM Standard for Metric Practice, E380-79. A comparison is made between various units used in mine ventilation from the past and those presently in use. This will allow an easy translation from one system to another, important when reading publications from abroad. S.I. and customary U.S. formulae are shown side by side for easier visualization of similarities and differences. Recommendations for the necessary steps in order to switch from American to S.I. units conclude the paper.

This paper presents the design concept using floating piles to support 2500Ton oil storage tanks on a very soft alluvial clayey soil of about 40m thick in Riau Province of Sumatra, Indonesia. The floating piles of various penetration lengths were designed to support seven numbers of such storage tanks seating on a 20m diameter and 500mm thick reinforced concrete (RC) circular raft. The pile points have been strategically located at the RC raft. Varying pile penetration lengths have been designed to minimize the angular distortion of the thin RC raft and the out-of-plane deflection at the tank edge. Vibrating wire strain gauges were installed at different levels inside the ø350mm prestressed reinforced concrete piles to measure the load transfer profile during the static load tests and water-loading test. The installation and interpretation of the instrumentation are described and discussed. Boreholes, in-situ tests like piezocones, vane shear tests and standard penetration tests, and laboratory testing were carried out to obtain geotechnical parameters for the pile designs. Static load tests were also carried out on the spun piles of varying lengths of 24m, 30m and 36m respectively. It has been demonstrated that the floating pile system can be a cost effective design to support heavy structures on very soft compressible deposits with satisfactory performance. Finally, the design concept validated with the results of instrumentation is discussed.

Acid mine drainage is a serious water pollution problem, for its contaminants will eventually effect the quality of the receiving streams. According to the Appalachian Regional Commission (1969)1, 10, 500 miles of streams have been polluted by mine drainage, and 70 percent of this acid pollution is accounted for by underground mines. Due to the severe damage to aquatic life, to recreational and industrial use, and to domestic water supply, more stringent mining and anti-pollution laws have been legislated and coal mine operators are required to treat the mine water discharges to meet the minimum standards. For years now, abatement and treatment methods have been extensively studied. Progress reports presented in the Fourth Symposium on Coal Mine Drainage Research, 1972 1 suggest that a thorough investigation and understanding of the basin discharge is necessary in order to cope with the mine drainage problem. The extent of mine water discharge contamination can be considered as a function of the basin streamflow and acid generation load.' A conservative treatment cost estimation these days is $0.40 per 1, 000 gallons for water with 100 ppm iron, 500 ppm acidity. These figures need not include collection and pumping costs nor the cost of dispersing of chemical waste by-products. To achieve optimal abatement and treatment of mine drainage, predictions of the quantity and quality of mine water discharges are needed. Basin discharge is a continuous process and it can be considered as a. macro-system. This system can be subdivided into micro-systems to describe the various mine discharge .types in the basin. The mining activities could produce acid water discharges from deep mines, stripmines, or associated gob piles. A total study entitled ?Resource Allocation to Optimize Mining Pollution Abatement Programs?* will consider all of these sources. However, this paper will discuss only one micro-system, the drift (deep) mine type. We will look at a single mine and its watershed. The total research project considers a multiple mining complex in an extensive stream basin.

The PbS-PbTe systen has been studied by quench-ing and D.T.A. techniques f?om 400' to 1150°C. Runs were made in evacuated silica tubes so that all equilibria are at the vapor pressure of the system. Lattice parameters of the quenched salnples , measured by X-ray diffraction, show a complete crystalline-solution series existing over a narrow temperature range between approximately 805" and 871°C. An exsolution dome extends from a maximum of about 805"C (approximately 30 mole pct PbTe) to 1 and 96.5 pet PbTe at 400°C. A narrow melting region, deternined by D.T.A., extends form 918c (mp PbTe), The shapes of the liquides and solidus curves imply the existence of a minimum at 871°C at approximately 65 pct PbTe. THe exact composition of the minimum could not be established due to the very narrow two-phase region. At compositions containing less than 50 pet PbTe, liquidus temperatures begin to increase, while the solidus remains almost flat to about 15 mole pet PbTe before beginning to vise toward the mp of PbS (1075 C). LEAD sulfide and lead telluride are isostructural (NaC1 type) semiconductors whose electrical and optical properties have been extensively studied and used in recent years. If appreciable crystalline solution exists between these compounds, the variation of physical properties with composition could be of interest. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent, if any. of crystalline solution, and to obtain the phase diagram for the system. To the knowledge of the authors, only three studies of the system PbS-PbTe have been reported, and, in chronological order, each investigation found an increasing amount of crystalline solution. In 1956, Yamamoto reported finding no evidence of crystalline solution between the compounds. Sindeyeva and Godov-ikov,' in 1959, found very limited crystalline solution. but only under conditions of excess tellurium concentration. Finally Melevski s3 investigation in 1963 indicated that one solid phase exists in the region from PbS to 7 pct PbTe and from 82 pct PbTe to PbTe at 886'C, with an eutectic at 55 pct PbTe at that temperature. Detailed data on the solvus boundary were not given. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS Commercially produced PbTe and PbS powders were used as starting materials. Batches of specific mole percent composition were accurately weighed and mixed in a plastic bottle, in a shaker mill. An analy- sis of impurity content is given in Table I for pure PbS and PbTe and for two randomly selected batches after the powders were mixed. Individual samples, ranging in weight from 0.2 to 0.5 g, were sealed in evacuated silica tubes which had been thoroughly washed and rinsed with acetone and distilled water. Thus all data taken were at the pressure of the system. Subsolidus relations were studied down to 400°C by heating the samples in a vertical tube furnace for 24 hr. The sealed tubes were quenched in water with quench time from the hot zone not exceeding 1 sec. Temperatures were measured by a chromel-alumel thermocouple and controlled to 53°C for most runs. The number and composition of phases present were determined from powder X-ray diffraction patterns taken at room temperature on a Norelco diffractome-ter, using silicon as an external standard. Above 850°C quenching techniques were, in general, found to be unsatisfactory, and differential thermal analysis (D.T.A.) was used to determine melting relations. The evacuated tubes were recessed about 1 cm at one end to accommodate the differential thermocouple. Al203 was used as the reference material in a similar tube containing the other side of the differential couple. For temperature measurements, a separate thermocouple was placed in the recess of the tube containing the sample to be measured, thus providing an opportunity to obtain thermal, as well as differential, analysis. All thermocouples for these measurements were Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh. Temperature and differential curves were recorded separately on synchronized strip-chart recorders. Thermocouples and recording equipment were calibrated using NaCl and gold standards, using the melting points 801" and 1063 C, respectively, which span most of the temperature range of interest. Heating and cooling rates generally were from 4 to 7°C per min. It was found, in fact. that rates ranging from 1.5 to 25°C per min did not significantly change the data obtained.

"The high-magnetization microspheres of Fe3O4 encapsulated with S1O2 and T1O2 layers (Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2) were prepared. The microspheres were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. These high-magnetization microspheres could be readily dispersed by shaking whereas they could be rapidly separated from the aqueous solution simply by applying an external magnetic field. The two shells of S1O2 and T1O2 protected the iron oxide well and the microspheres were stable in acid and base solutions. Therefore, they have a good potential for the enrichment of phosphopeptides or photocatalytic activity. They could also be used to remove metal ions from waste water.IntroductionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is the most commonly used separation technique for its simplicity, consumption of small volumes of organic solvent, and the ability to achieve a higher enrichment factor. The quest for new adsorbents is an important factor in improving analytical sensitivity and precision in SPE techniques. To date, many novel adsorbents, such as nanometer-sized materials, carbon nanotubes, mesoporous materials and magnetic nanoparticles have been employed in SPE.Magnetic polymeric microspheres, an interesting advanced composite material, have received increasing attention in the past few decades because of their unique physical and chemical properties and their potential for use in applications in various fields [1]. Magnetic microspheres consisting of an iron oxide core and a silica shell have attracted particular attention for their unique magnetic response, low cytotoxicity, and chemically modifiable surface. The core-shell magnetic silica microspheres have shown great potential in the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine for applications such as cell labeling and separation, enzyme and protein separations, targeted drug delivery, and magnetic ferrofluids hyperthermia."

"Option pricing is used in finance for valuing options to buy (or sell) shares at some future date because it provides a convenient framework for quantifying values subject to uncertainty. As one of the main sources of uncertainty in mining is the price (sales) of the metal, this approach can also be used for valuing mining projects.The first part of this paper reviews options and option pricing; the second part presents the approach developed by Brennan and Schwartz (1985) for using option pricing to value natural resources. Several applications of this methodology have been published; these are described. From a mining point of view, the assumptions made by Brennan and Schwartz are too simplistic. The weaknesses are discussed with a view to improving an apparently promising new way of assessing the value of projects. IntroductionThe collapse of the British merchant banking group, Barings, has highlighted the risks that can be incurred by speculators and arbitragers in the futures and options markets. But this negative attention on futures and options should not make us forget their positive aspects. They can provide producers and consumers of metals with more predictable sales prices. The introduction of the new traded average price options, TAPOS, by the London Metal Exchange in January 1997 is a response to this need. Equally important, the theory that the finance industry has developed for valuing options provides an interesting framework for valuing mineral projects as well. While this paper was being revised, the South African gold mining house, JCI, announced that it was using a methodology based on option pricing for valuing the mineral rights to deeplevel gold resources (see Box 1)."

Coal Transport Via Pipe Line Claimed Feasible Moving coal via pipe line is a project proposed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. A pipe line 100 miles long capable of transporting 5000 tons of coal a day with water could be built for about $10 million. The cost of moving the coal 100 miles would be between $1.28 and $2.01 a ton.

We have searched and analyzed several modern technologies aiming at the best applications of environmental management, the studying of quarrying ? mining as well as the excavation sites ? utilization ? rehabilitation. We have used long-range reflectorless laser surveying systems, so as to achieve the fastest and most accurate surveying of the extractive work sites. We also used them, in order to collect field data, measure distances, surveying monitoring stations and environmental parameters ? data. Furthermore these systems can make the field work quite faster, more reliable and credible and have low cost in collecting data even in dangerous and non-approachable areas. We have used and processed on the field data in G.I.S. applications, in order to create 2-D and 3-D digital ground models. These G.I.S. applications present the existing relief and the management of the final stage of the area. The suggested techniques and works needed, for reclamation and utilization of the areas, could be tried, evaluated and well presented. The evolution and utilization of these ?smart? modern tools for the effective environmental management of quarrying ? mining ? extractive activity sites, will be presented by using case histories from the Hellenic territory.

"Location: The Menominee district has been described geologically in several units, because the known iron-bearing formations of the larger region are not a really connected. From the commercial and mining standpoint, however, the district em¬braces, all that territory extending from a point about five miles east of Vulcan to a point a few miles west of Iron River, an east-west distance of about fifty miles, and from a line about two miles south of Vulcan to one ten miles north of Crystal Falls, a north-south distance of about thirty-five miles. This area is largely in the State of Michigan, but includes more than two hundred square miles in Florence County, Wisconsin. The chief towns of the district are Vulcan, Iron Mountain, Iron River, and Crystal Falls, in Michigan, and . Florence in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin portion of the district has not produced a large portion of the output of the area.History: The earliest reports of iron ore in the Menominee district were made by J. W. Foster and S. W. Hill, who conducted a geological exploration from Lake Superior to Green Bay in the fall of 1848. It is a remarkable fact that in spite of their plain statements regarding their discoveries, these state¬ments were apparently forgotten for a period of nearly twenty years. Foster states that ""about two miles southeast of the lower falls (of the Twin Falls on the Menominee River) near Sec. 30, T. 40 N., R. 30 W. there is a large bed of specular iron ore associated with the talcose and argillaceous slates. It makes its appearance on the north side of the Lake and can be traced a mile and a half in length and in places is exposed one hundred feet in width."""

Previous researchers have used the cutting and rejoining model to represent a porous body when attempting to place Archie's law on a theoretical basis and calculate rock permeabilities (F = Ø-m, where F = formation factor, = - porosity and m = a constant). In using the model, a porous solid is assumed to consist of sections with parallel sides containing straight. continuous pores of total porosity 4 (pore to total volume or, for a homogeneous body, pore to total area). The joining of pores at an interface between two sections is assumed to be random which results in a common pore area Ø2. This reduced area Ø2 is then taken as that area which limits electrical conduction or fluid flow in the body. Agreement between experimental results and results calculated using a model is not always good Because of this, various modifications of the model are presented — for instance, the random nature of the joining is questioned. Formation factor measurements on specially constructed porous specimens are described in this paper. it is concluded that the common pore area limits flow completely only if sections containing straight pores are very thin, and that, in most natural materials, the common pore area at an interface must be greater than that given by random joining. However, the model is still useful in permeability calculations, provided that the fractional area limiting flow is determined from formation factor measurements. INTRODUCTION Two important properties of porous media are permeability k, which describes the ease with which a fluid can flow through a porous medium, and formation factor F, defined as the ratio of the resistivity of a saturated specimen to the resistivity of the saturating liquid which describes the electrical properties of the saturated material. k is defined by Darcy's law,l k= µqL/P Ae . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [1] where µ = liquid viscosity, q = flow rate, L = length of specimen, p = pressure across the specimen and = - the effective area over which flow occurs, F is given experimentally by Archie's law,2 F = Ø-m ,..............(2) where 4 is porosity defined as the pore to total volume or, for a homogeneous body, the pore to total area; and m lies between 1.3 for loose sand and 2 for cemented sand. Consider a porous body of total cross-sectional area A and length L, saturated with a liquid of resistivity R and with an effective area for conduction of Ae. Then, from the definition of F given previously, F=A/Ae , ................(3) or, from Eqs. 2 and 3, Ae = A Øm ..............(4) Thus, in any attempt to calculate k or F, some assumptions must be made concerning the pore structure of the body and a value derived for A,. To determine Ae, Childs and George3 and Wyllie and Gardner4 suggested an elementary statistical representation often referred to as the cutting and rejoining model of a porous body. The body is assumed to be composed of two or more parallel-sided sections of porosity 4, containing straight, continuous pores with a common pore area of Ø2 at an interface between two sections. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation of the efficiency of water-solvent mixtures in recovery of oil. These mixtures may have the high displacement efficiencies characteristic of solvent floods and the high sweep efficiencies characteristic of water floods. Thus, the water-solvent process may increase the number of reservoirs in which a miscible-type displacement can be used profitably. The experiments on the use of water-solvent mixtures for recovery of oil were conducted to find the general applicability of the process. These studies demonstrated that, in flowing through sands, water and solvent segregated into a solvent layer on the top and a water layer on the bottom rather than flowing through the sands as a uniform mixture. Calculations based on the simultaneous flow of the water and solvent in layers were used to predict the effective mobility of the mixtures and the optimum operation of the process in steeply dipping, homogeneous reservoirs. As most reservoirs are not suited for the operation of the process under ideal conditions, experimental studies were conducted with sand-packed models scaled to represent more realistic reservoirs. These studies included the effects on recovery of oil of rate of injection, viscosity of oil, variations of permeablity within a formation and variations in water-solvent ratio. For the range of con-ditions studied, higher recoveries of oil were obtained with water-solvent mixtures than with water or practical volumes of solvent alone. INTRODUCTION A group of intriguing—because of their great possibilities—new oil recovery methods at the disposal of the petroleum engineer are the miscible displacement processes. These processes (high-pressure gas drive, en-riched-gas drive and LPG bank driven by methane) displace all of the oil from the portions of the reservoir swept by the injection fluid. The key question confronting the engineer applying one of these techniques to a particular reservoir is, "What fraction of the reservoir can be swept by injection of a practical volume of solvent?"." Intensive laboratory studies have been made during the past several years in seeking answers to the question of the sweep efficiencies which can be expected in solvent floods.' - These studies provided the answer that low-viscosity, low-density solvents channel and by-pass oil in sands with no dip. In horizontal sands, solvent flooding becomes less efficient as the viscosity of the oil increases, the recovery of oil at solvent breakthrough decreases and larger volumes of solvent are required to achieve a given recovery. More efficient displacement of oil by solvent is observed under certain conditions in sands with dip.".' If the permeability and dip of the sand are sufficiently high, gravity segregation of low-density solvent injected updip can prevent channeling. At rates of depletion below a critical rate,"." no channeling occurs. Unfortunately, in many reservoirs, the critical rate is so low that production of oil at rates below this rate is not economically attractive. And at rates over four times the critical rate, channeling is almost as severe in sands with dip as in horizontal sands. These findings pointed out that, for solvent floods to be generally applicable in recovering oil from all types of reservoirs, new methods of improving their sweep efficiencies are needed. Simultaneous injection of water with the miscible fluid was suggested by Caudle and Dyes7 as a method for improving sweep efficiencies. They theorize that water flowing with the solvent would decrease the effective mobility of the solvent and cause it to contact more oil sand. If, indeed, the water and solvent flowed as a uniform mixture, the process should have the advantages of the high displacement efficiencies characteristic of miscible floods and the high sweep efficiencies of water floods. Thus, the method (at least in theory) would greatly increase the number of reservoirs in which miscible-type displacements would be feasible. A few years ago H. M. Cyr, working in the Research Laboratories of The New Jersey Zinc Co., produced a few pounds of zinc1 of such purity that no other elements were detected in it by spectrographic analysis, using the facilities then available. This zinc contained less than one ten-thousandth of one per cent of metallic impurities.&apos; During the decade that followed upon the laboratory production of this "spectro-graphically pure" zinc, commercial developments brought about the production of large tonnages of zinc of purity exceeding 99.99 per cent, and today zinc of 99.999 per cent purity is produced and marketed as "chemically pure" zinc. Typical analyses of present supplies of high-purity zinc are given in Table 1. Introduction A Hypothetical Scenario: Suppose that your company&apos;s research department has developed a new device which represents a significant innovation. You would like to begin selling it as soon as possible. The new device has not been publicly disclosed. You&apos;re not sure about what type of intellectual property protection you should be seeking, or when you should be seeking it. As discussed below, assuming that the costs are worth it, a patent application probably should be filed before any public disclosure is made. In general, if you do not file a patent application prior to a public disclosure, you will lose rights. Major Types of Intellectual Property In this paper, intellectual property protection is broadly discussed. Practical steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of losing intellectual property rights (and maximizing the possibility of benefiting from your company&apos;s intellectual property) are outlined at the end of this paper. The issues discussed in this paper are somewhat complex, because a number of outcomes are possible, depending on the facts. It is strongly recommended that you seek legal advice in your jurisdiction in connection with any particular circumstances relating to intellectual property rights. "Intellectual property" refers to a number of different types of rights. The major types of intellectual property are: (i) patents; (ii) trademarks; and (iii) copyright. Trade secrets are also usually considered to be a type of intellectual property, and they are also discussed in this paper because of their importance. In general, each of these types of intellectual property protects different subject matter, although there can be some overlap. Intellectual property rights are generally territorial in nature. The scope of protection of a type of intellectual property in a country (e.g., patent protection) depends on whether the specific national requirements for protection have been met.

Discussion of the paper of L. G. HUNTLEY,. presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 102, June, 1915, pp. 1333 to 1349. E. W. SHAW, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*). -The comparatively great extent and uniform character of the Dakota sandstone make it of great interest to the student of rock pores and the movements of their fluid contents. However, compared with other sands in areas of carbonaceous rocks facts concerning it do not seem to be of such great direct importance to the producer for it has thus far yielded few important pools of oil or gas. Information concerning the sandstone is extensive but scattered, hence a general treatise regarding it-particularly its pores, the fluids they contain, and the movements of the fluids-has been much needed. I therefore feel that the. chief thing to be ,desired concerning Mr. Huntley&apos;s paper is that it were more extended, particularly as to the discussion of the data presented. The general structure map of the Dakota is of especial interest. Slight changes in wording seem to be desirable here and there in the paper. For example, at the beginning of the third paragraph one-wonders if flora instead of fauna were not intended. In Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 the vertical scale seems incorrect. Concerning the analyses of oil quoted it is noted that they "are given, as indicating what may be expected in different localities." This seems to need modification for the average analysis of oil from Powder River, which indicates for example that this oil begins to boil at 213°C. The fact is that the samples to which this figure refers were taken from seeps long exposed. to the air :find hence the underground Dakota oil of this district no doubt differs profoundly from that which the analysis indicates. The product of a well here would probably differ more in boiling point and other. respects from the samples analyzed than it would from almost any other petroleum in the world. The use of the word synclinorium does not conform to the original definition, but this may be pardonable because misuse of the term, though a different misuse, has become general. Synclinorium is an orographic term and cannot be correctly applied outside of mountain regions, for it is derived in part from the Greek word for mountain. It has, however, been widely used in a purely structural sense for compound syncline. The broad shallow syncline of the Dakota sandstone falls in neither category. Underground stone mines tier construction aggregates and industrial minerals are being planned in increasing numbers throughout the United States. At the middle of the last century (1950s) underground stone mines were much more common, and characteristically had no thorough site characterization other than proving reserves and trial-and-error planning. Ground control employed was minimal. Consequently, there was a tendency to conduct minimal pre-mining studies. However, the deposits that lend themselves to little site characterization and minimal ground control are few today, with the best being mined out. Failures of a number of underground stone or similar mines from that era are more common than realized, Underground stone mines almost always use some combinations of square or rectangular pillars, sized to support the overburden load, and spaced to allow the use of larger, more-efficient equipment. Heights are controlled by the available stone quality, interbeds of waste, or technological or safety considerations. Prior to committing to a specific mine plan with subsequent significant capital investment, and prior to having available the wealth of knowledge and experience gained once mining underground, a safe and workable mine layout must he achieved. Early attention to the several different rock units involved (roof, mine level. floor) and their strength as a rock mass with the inherent discontinuities, will allow first approximations of acceptable mine geometries and sequencing.
