THE Bradford Oil District lies in the northern part of McKean County, Pa., and the southern part of Cattaraugus County, N. Y. Although petroleum was first found in the producing sand in 1871, it was not until the early part of the year 1875 that a productive horizon was acknowledged to exist, even by those most largely interested in the production of the crude oil. It has been reported to me that the first well drilled in the valley of the Tuneangewant Creek (commonly called Tuna Creek) was drilled by F. E. Dean and brothers in 1865. This well was located on the Shepherd farm, near the present site of Custer City. One hundred and sixty feet of drive pipe was used, and the hole was drilled to the depth of 900 feet. The producing sand at Custer City is found about 1130 feet below the level of the railroad track. The Shepherd farm well was therefore abandoned over 200 feet above the top of the oil sand. The next well was drilled by the Dean brothers on the Clark farm at Tarport. Drilling was stopped at a depth of 605 feet, or over 400 feet above the top of the oil sand. In the year 1862 the old Bradford well, since known as the Barnsdall well, was drilled to a depth of 200 feet with a spring pole, and then abandoned. In the spring of 1866 the citizens of the village of Bradford concluded to club together and sink the Barnsdall well deeper. Expansion of central production facilities at the Kutubu Petroleum Development Project in Papua New Guinea (PNG) required excavation of a steep hillside overlooking operating crude oil processing, storage and pumping facilities. Drilling and blasting were used to remove a large volume of rock which varied from hard limestone to soft sandstone, with zones of soft clay and many underground caverns. Similar ground conditions had made it very difficult to predict and control blast-ing results during previous excavation in this area.Special conditions of the project included restrictions on ground vibration levels at a high pressure oil pipeline and pump station within 100m of the blasting area, and a prohibition on any flyrock. As work progressed, some blasting was necessary with 20m of installations being constructed on the levelled project site. Thus blast design, drilling and charging were carefully controlled to avoid any incidents which could interfere with oil production or progress of the construction project.

"The authors were tasked with introducing safe and efficient drilling and blasting practices to a small artisanal mine located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The current mining methods employed at the mine are inefficient as rockbreaking is conducted utilizing hammer and chisel, or by drilling and blasting with no understanding of the rockbreaking process. The paper discusses the drill and blast cycle, as well as the associated activities necessary to support the mining cycle. The challenges and critical aspects in implementing drill and blast activities are discussed, as well as some of the technical aspects, i.e.drilling pattern, initiation and timing of the blast, and handling of misfires. Ancillary issues such as ventilation, training, communication, effective planning, logistics, and human relations are also examined. IntroductionRockbreaking accounts for 60% of the direct mining costs in small-scale mining. When drilling and blasting practices are poorly implemented the process becomes inefficient and dangerous. The introduction of a proven drill and blast system to artisanal mining offers a number of challenges, with safety being considered the backbone of any sustainable operation and a standard that cannot be compromised.The paper is based on a project at an artisanal cassiterite (tin) mining operation in a small village in the Kayonza District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. A drill and blast programme utilizing industry best practice was introduced at an underground development end; a raise developed at an inclination of 23 degrees. The underground working is accessed via a 17 degree incline shaft with an operating length of 105 m and serviced by a single drum winder. The winder operates at a speed of about 3.5 m/min hoisting two 1 t wagons from the bottom of the incline to surface for tipping (Figure 1)."

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

Analyses of statistical data indicate that haulage accidents are one of the largest sources of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines, and that the rate of accidents in transportation has been increasing during the past few years. These previous analyses were performed by correlating accident or fatality data at a rather high level of miner activity. In this present investigation, underground surveys were made by observing conditions and activities in some detail at a rather low level of activity in an attempt to understand factors contributing to hazards in the specific situations observed. The aim of the current study was to derive preventive measures that might obviate the hazardous conditions and unsafe acts observed; and, following this, to provide recommendations for additional research and development to reduce accident potential in underground transportation. The major project tasks are diagrammed together with the task outputs in figure 1-1. Initially, a preliminary study of ell underground haulage operations was performed in order to establish the kinds of data needed and to provide the rationale leading to the data requirement. At the same time, the various types of haulage equipment used for each operation were defined. A preliminary analysis of each type of haulage operation was performed in order to establish the sequence of tasks required to operate haulage equipment. These tasks were transferred directly onto observation forms, and were used in developing interview forms. In parallel with the task analysis, a review was made of accidents and hazards that might occur during each type of operation.

Wastes in various forms have always been a part of mining, and management of mine waste has evolved from the early days of "push it over the side and down the creek" to today's highly engineered waste facilities. Changes have been brought about not only by technological advances in the ?3M?s? - mining, milling, and metallurgy - but also by environmental awareness and changing social values that have been manifested in an ever-growing maze of regulations. This is a dynamic era, and the debate goes on. So it is that planners have to anticipate permit and regulatory requirements in the site-selection process along with the traditional criteria. The McLaughlin gold project is an example of how one company, Homestake, has met this planning challenge. In August of 1980, Homestake Mining Company announced a major gold discovery in northern California known as the McLaughlin Project. The property is approximately 80 air miles northeast of San Francisco near the junction of Lake, Napa, and Yolo Counties. This is an area where mercury has been mined off and on for over 100 years; gold has never been mined in the area. The gold is microscopic and finely dispersed in a complex geologic setting. Reserves are estimated at approximately 20 million tons at a grade of approximately 0.16 ounces per ton.

Continuous laboratory solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions using LIX?79 guanidine based extractant has been investigated. Different variables that affected the selectivity and extraction include aqueous pH, extractant concentration, and modifier concentration. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to the other cyano anions were compared, and the following order of selectivity Au > Ag > Zn > Cu > Fe was observed. According to the pH isotherms, aurocyanide can be extracted in an alkaline media, and a better separation with respect to the other cyanoanions was obtained in the pH range 10.5-11.2. From the McCabe Thiele diagrams, better recovery was predicted when using LIX?79 extractant and tridecanol modifier at 10 vol.%. Stripping of the gold from the loaded organic was carried out at pH > 12 using NaOH and NaCN solution. The continuous tests indicate that a two-stage extraction followed by a single stage strip is adequate to obtain an overall process efficiency of >90%. Better results were obtained using a copper wash stage before gold stripping.

Sidbec-Normines operates six large iron ore concentrate regrinding mills in parallel and open circuit at its Port-Cartier pelletizing plant. Grinding kinetics in these mills were characterized for slurry densities varying between 70 and 89% solids, using a lumped parameter size discrete model. Optimum grinding conditions were encountered at 83.5 to 84% solids. Higher densities decreased the normalized selection function and increased slurry short-circuiting, yielding a sharply coarser mill discharge. At lower slurry densities, the normalized selection function decreased and the mill discharge coarsened slightly. The grinding kinetic model predicted particle size distributions within the mill. These were found to vary significantly from the feed to the discharge end. This is likely to cause nonlinear breakage kinetics.

Poor quality water resulting from interaction of surface run-off with saline mine spoil and soils can cause significant problems for water reuse on mine sites. Not only can this saline water lead to machine corrosion and increased maintenance costs, but may cause detrimental effects on the environment. Determining the geochemistry of mine spoil, and the likelihood of salt dissolution during rainfall events, may aid in more effective mine site management of water. Spoil samples were taken from three areas of the German Creek mine site, situated in the Bowen Basin coalfield, Queensland. Samples from two undisturbed areas on the lease were also collected for comparison. Analyses were performed using a variety of laboratory techniques: leaching tests, effective cation exchange capacity determination, X-ray diffraction, clay quantification, and total organic content determination. Results show that dissolution of surface (top 2 cm) salt minerals from spoil areas is an important contributor to surface run-off salinity during rainfall events. Equally, ion exchange with clay minerals appears to be a significant source of elevated ion concentrations in run-off waters. Findings from the undisturbed areas show undetectable quantities of salt mineral species, resulting in waters with low ion concentrations. More generally, monovalent cations (sodium, and to a lesser extent potassium) appear to be derived from dissolution of salt precipitated whereas divalent cations (calcium, magnesium) are more likely to be sourced from exchange reactions with clay minerals. Incorporating knowledge about the mechanism of cation mobilisation from spoil with the spatial distribution of spoil properties and understanding of the dynamics of water quality variations on the site will aid in development of integrated water quantity and quality management strategies.

While the words “explosives” and “blasting” cause insurers to become apprehensive, skilled contractors using modern techniques under controlled conditions rarely cause serious damage or injury. However, blasting operations frequently result in complaints and, consequently, insurance claims. The purpose of this bulletin is to inform construction project participants of some of the measures which may be taken to reduce losses arising from blasting operations.

Commodity transportation by barge is possible on about 25,000 miles of navigable inland waterways in the contiguous 48 states. Barge operations are used chiefly for the movement of bulk raw materials ranging from farm products to iron ore, coal, and other bulky semi-finished as well as finished products such as steel, chemicals and petroleum [3,p.7-9]. The barge industry, unlike other transportation industries, is largely unregulated. This is because all liquid bulk commodities most dry bulk commodities transported by for-hire carriers and companies engaged in private transportation of their own commodities are exempted from Interstate Commerce Commission regulations. As a result, about 15 percent of the total ton-miles of barge traffic each year is under Interstate Commerce Commission regulation [13,p.14-25].

"The aim of this study is to prepare the apatitic material using colemanite mineral (2CaO.3B2O3.5H2O) which was obtained from Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. For this purpose, colemanite mineral was reacted with different phosphate sources, namely, dipotassiumhydrogen phosphate, ammoniumhydrogen phosphate and ortophosphoric acid at various temperatures and time periods. Experiments were run in batch system. The apatitic material was prepared by a wet method and followed by heat treatment at various temperatures. Structure of the samples was analyzed by XRD, FTIR, XRF and SEM. The particle size analysis was also made for the result product. The experiments showed that reaction temperature, contact time and heating temperature are important parameters to transform the colemanite into apatitic structure. Reaction of colemanite with dipotassiumhydrogen phosphate and ammoniumhydrogen phosphate results in amorphous, non-stoichiometric hydroxyapatite type structure, while acid based phosphate source gives brushite and monetite type product before and after heat treatment, respectively.IntroductionBoron which has properties intermediate between metals and non-metals is a member of semiconductor group of elements. Its atom is very small and has three valence electrons. Boron exists in Earth's crust (from 5 mg/kg in basalts to 100 mg/kg in shale) and in the oceans (4.5 mg/l) [1]. Turkey has 60% of world's boron reserves which is mostly in the form of colemanite (2Ca0.3B203.5H20). Colemanite is the most important calcium containing commercial borate mineral with 5 mol of crystal water [2].Calcium phosphate cements are very useful for bone repair applications because of its chemical structure. They are injectable, easy to shape and can be maintained locally. Because of those reasons calcium phosphate cements are very effective to fill bone defects with an irregular shape [3]. Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO)6(OHh) is the major component of the bone (70 wt%). However, hydroxyapatite stoichiometry, composition and crystallinity differ in human skeleton system [4, 5].The main objective of the present work was to study the transformation of colemanite to apatitic material using different phosphate solutions at several time spans and temperatures. The experiments were run in a batch system, change in pH and also weight loss were measured after the experiments. Several analysis methods were used to investigate the chemical and structural changes."

Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

The four top barite-producing countries in the world are China, India, Morocco and the United States. China is currently the largest exporter of barite followed by India. More than 95 percent of the barite mined today is used by the petroleum industry as driller’s mud. The rest is used in the industrial market and the medical field. Most of the barite mined in the United States is in Nevada. This year, mining activity has increased due to an increase in oil exploration/development. This was caused by an increase in the crude oil prices.

Stress Mapping Technology is aproprietary technique developed to target epigenetic mineralisation located in dilatant (low stress) sites. It is a computer based technique, based on rock mechanics principles and stress-strain relationships, which seeks to transform strain data, in the form of a solid geology map, to stress data.The main assumptions in the conceptual model are that:The strain pattern of faults and lithological contacts have not been changed since mineralisation i.e. that ore formation is late in the structural history.Stress orientations and magnitudes are known.Rheological properties of faults and rock units can be deduced.The 2D geometric and rheological data is then treated by a mathematical technique which permits the geometry of the elements to be defined by the spacing and orientation of the discontinuities in the rock mass.

The application of high technology to monitor and control fire life safety, critical functionality in tunnels and underground spaces generally has progressed at an ever accelerating rate over the past decade. Today these systems comprise some of the most complex and little understood aspects of the tunnel/underground facility construction industry, with this area being perceived as high risk comprising impenetrably complex ‘black box’ technology covered in blinking LEDs. This paper will seek to explode some urban myths and common misconceptions associated with such systems, providing its intended audience with a review of what all this technology comprises and where the real risks lie in its delivery lie.The author contends (and looks to support such contention via this paper) that by applying baseline project and risk management processes to the procurement of this widely misunderstood black box technology, the quality of the final outcome can be much improved, driving innovation, reducing both cost and significantly mitigating delivery risk.CITATION:Taylor, G M, 2014. The Bureau of Mines investigated separating copper-nickel mattes to recover a copper-rich fraction suitable for processing by conventional copper metallurgical processes and a nickel-rich fraction suitable for processing in a hydrometallurgical nickel circuit. Distribution of cobalt and precious metals between the copper and nickel fractions was also determined. A matte containing a nominal 65 pct Cu, 9 pct Ni, 4 pct Fe, and 20 pct S was separated into a copper fraction that comprised 80 pct of the matte weight and contained 70 pct Cu and <1.5 pct Ni, plus a nickel fraction that contained 40 pct Ni and 30 pct Cu. Recoveries of copper and nickel into their respective fractions were 90 pct and 87 pct. These results were obtained in a laboratory flotation cell at a matte grind of 90 pct minus 500 mesh and a pH of 12.4, using 1.7 pounds DPG (diphenylguanidine) per ton of matte as collector and frother. Magnetic separation was used to remove metallic iron-nickel alloy from the copper fractions. Distribution of cobalt was about 70 pct to the nickel fraction and 30 pct to the copper fraction. Silver reported predominately to the copper fraction, while Au, Pt, and Pd were essentially entirely recovered in the nickel fraction.

Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. Procedures of mining high-calcium limestone underground at the Kimballton mine of the Standard Lime and Cement Co. in Giles County, west-central Virginia, are described. Drilling and blasting procedures arc discussed in detail, and direct mining costs are tabulated in percentage of total cost. Output, about 1,725 tons of limestone a day, is attained with heavy trackless equipment by the room and pillar method of ruining; modified by benching floors. Operating features include underground air compression, electric-eye control of curtained doorways, use of a single jumbo drill rig for all drilling, and an effective plan for maintenance of equipment. The company&apos;s safety program has contributed to an outstanding safe mining record. The mina is integrated with a plant on the property which converts the stone to metallurgical and chemical grade lime.

The practical analysis of the hydrodynamics of the wellbore has long been a subject of interest to engineers. This paper presents a simplified solution to the problem of computing the pressure drop for the flow of drilling mud in the annulus of the wellbore. This solution is, however, an exact and rigorous solution under the assumptions which have been imposed. These assumptions are that the drilling fluid is a Bingham plastic fluid* and that the annulus is formed by two concentric, stationary, cylindrical pipes. It is further assumed that the fluid is incompressible and that its motion is isothermal and in a steady state. This problem under the same assumptions has been attacked by previous authors. Beck, Nuss and Dunn&apos; proposed that the equation for the flow of a Bingham plastic fluid in a cylindrical pipe could be applied to an annulus if the pipe radius were replaced in the equation by the hydraulic radius. This equation, known as the Buckingham-Reiner equation&apos; (see Appendix 1), was also used in an approximate form. Van Olphen pointed out that even for a simple or Newtonian- fluid the pipe equation (Poiseuille&apos;s law) could not be converted to the Lamb equation escriptive of flow in an annulus (see Appendix 1) by using the hydraulic radius. Van Olphen further attempted to give a solution for the annular flow of a Bingham plastic fluid by introducing approximations similar to those which have been used in the case of the Buckingham-Reiner equation. Other attempts to provide approximate or exact solutions have been made by Grodde&apos; and by Mori and Ototakeq. The present authors some years ago in unpublished work derived the correct expressions relating the pressure drop and flow rate for this problem. It was found that the solution consisted of two simultaneous equations, one of which contained a logarithmic term. Thus, obtaining numerical results for any particular case of interest involves very tedious trial-and-error computations. Very recently Laird presented the correct derivation of the two equations which are given in full detail in Appendix 1. In order to reduce the amount of calculation time which would be involved in providing a complete tabular or graphical solution to the problem, a high-speed electronic digital computer has been utilized. For this purpose the two simultaneous equations were transformed into more compact expressions by introducing reduced variables. These expressions are given in the following theoretical section. A similar procedure in this problem has been developed by Fredrickson and Bird1" Their tabular results, however, are very incomplete in the range of practical interest for problems of wellbore hydrodynamics. We have furthermore been able to express our graphical results in terms of convenient and familiar dimensionless groups. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT Use of Reduced Variables In terms of reduced variables the two simultaneous equations just discussed take the following form, The reduced variables q, x, a and z are defined in terms of the various measured quantities, where Q is volumetric flow rate, AP/L is pressure gradient, Dl is OD of inner pipe, D, is ID of outer pipe, is plastic viscosity, and is yield point. Thus, we have a dimensionless volume flux, a dimensionless reciprocal pressure gradient, and the ratio of the pipe diameters Before introducing the fourth reduced variable, z, it is of interest to consider the physical significance of the parameter x. As may &apos;be seen from the velocity profile of Fig. 1 the Bingham plastic fluid has the interesting property that a portion of the stream flows at a uniform velocity without shearing action. This section of the stream is situated approximately in the center of the conduit and is known as the "plug flow" region. Its existence is due to the fact that the shearing stresses within the region do not exceed the yield point, which is one of the two flow properties characterizing the fluid.
