Objective As mines become safer and disasters fewer, a time may come when no employees in the mining industry have any practical experience in managing a mine emergency. To fill an emerging gap in mine emergency response training, a multidisciplinary team of researchers and computer programmers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has developed an intervention for mining personnel who would be in leadership positions in the command center during emergencies. It is called MERITS, a computer-based emergency simulation exercise. MERITS is short for "Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation." It provides trainees an opportunity to gain command center experience during a simulated underground coal mine emergency. MERITS allows trainees to practice information gathering, situation assessment, decision-making, and coordination skills without risk to personnel or property. Individuals representing mine emergency response personnel, various State safety officials, and private mine management from three States have participated in MERITS training. What Is MERITS? MERITS is an extension of previous work that compiled a knowledge base relevant to mine disaster management via interviews, analysis of literature, reviews of past events, and observations of mock mine disasters. Findings from prior research found a need for an alternative method of command center training. This new computer simulation is being used to train emergency command center personnel to effectively manage an underground mine fire. Modeled after training simulations developed for other industries (e.g., to address nuclear accidents, chemical spills, evacuations, etc.), MERITS simulates underground and surface events related to the disaster. It exposes the user to events that typically occur during a mine emergency, such as lack of information and miscommunication. It also presents trainees with issues that must be addressed, such as making provisions for briefing news media and victims' families, ordering needed supplies, interfacing with Government enforcement agencies, and housing mine rescue teams. The outcome of the scenario is determined by the users' decisions and their emergency response plans. Field Results Field testing of MERITS was conducted with eight full-day training sessions at four different locations in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. These field tests benefited from the knowledge and experience of State of Pennsylvania inspection officials, representatives of the United Mine Workers of America(UMWA), and private mine management who served as trainees for the MERITS training sessions. Trainees self-reported an average of20 years of work experience in the mining industry. All trainees had participated in Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) training exercises, and many had been involved in real mine emergencies. Trainee evaluation of the MERITS program is summarized below: •Twenty-six of the 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them know how to prepare for a real emergency. •Twenty-five of the 27 trainees believed that the storyline for the MERITS simulation was either "very realistic" or "realistic." •All 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them learn how to better handle a real emergency. •None of the 27 trainees stated that they were bored during the simulation. After the initial field tests, MERITS was refined and retested during training sessions for individuals from State agencies, the UMWA, and private industry. Mining personnel from underground coal and underground stone mines participated and responded positively to the learning experience. This is an era of "expansion;" and, conformably with the change in commercial conditions, the function of the mining engineer, as well as that of his confréres in many other professions, has also expanded. From the position of an engineer, limited to the determination of technical questions, the engineer of to-day has come to assume an economic importance in those branches of industry dependent upon engineering skill for their development. He is indeed an engineer of limited usefulness who does not go further professionally than to submit a purely technical report on subjects presented for his consideration. While he has the same responsibility as formerly in the solution of the technical problems involved, he is further expected to supplement his report with advice on the financial and commercial aspects of these problems. For the great majority of problems presented to the engineer ultimately involve the determination of the pecuniary relations of the propositions under consideration. The measured changes in the yield stress of a poly crystalline Ta-O alloy after strain aging at 100°C have been separated into two components; the change inflow stress and the change in dislocation locking parameter. These two components vary independently indicating that at least two separate recovery processes take place during strain-aging. Variations in the locking parameter can be accounted for by segregation of oxygen atoms to dislocations, but variations inflow stress cannot be explained by current theories. STRAIN-AGING in Fe-C and Fe-N alloys has been studied extensively.' The kinetics of the removal of the interstitial solute from solution appear to agree with the predictions of the cottrell-bilby2 model or a variation of it proposed by harper.3 Solute segregates to the dislocations under the influence of the elastic strain field of the dislocation and the rate of depletion of the solute can be measured by following the change in electrical resistivity4 or internal friction.5 On reloading a prestrained specimen, plastic flow starts at Fig. 1, but after aging the reloaded specimen yields discontinuously at a higher stress The aging index reflects the extent to which the yield has returned. This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

"Field observations on replacements of 12-inch constant cross-section double disc cutters in Tuzla Wastewater Tunnel excavated by an EPB TBM with 3.151 mm excavation diameter excavating hard rock are summarized. Cutter life is correlated to rock’s uniaxial compressive strength and Cerchar abrasivity index, and TBM operational parameters. Number of cutter replacements, average cutter replacement rates and types of cutter damages are summarized. The relationships between cutter life and rock properties and TBM operational parameters are analyzed by single variable regression method. Detailed analysis between chainages 1+200 and 1+982 km indicates that average cutter consumption rate is 35.7 m3/replacement (4.6 m/replacement). Cerchar abrasivity index and uniaxial compressive strength does not indicate any meaningful relationship with cutter life. Penetration per revolution and field specific energy might be used for predicting lives of constant cross-section double disc cutters. However, additional data is required to generalize the findings of this study. INTRODUCTION Cutter life / replacement and/or consumption rates in terms of cutter cost and replacement time loses is one of the most important parameters affecting excavation performance of mechanical excavators, especially of TBMs used very widely and equipped with usually disc cutters. Predicting cutter cost is a very important task in especially feasibility stage of tunneling projects. Basic parameters affecting cutter life can be classified into 3 general groups as geological and geotechnical, excavation machine (TBM) related, and operational parameters (Bilgin et al., 2013). The geological and geotechnical parameters are the most dominant ones among them. The machine related parameters should be arranged in accordance with the expected geological and geotechnical conditions for the best TBM excavation performance and minimum cost."

The exploration of the seafloor regarding the abundances of poly-metallic nodules has received growing attention recently. Image-based exploration using cameraequipped deep-sea observation systems has been introduced successfully to increase spatial resolution in the exploration process but the evaluation and interpretation of the huge amount of image data creates a serious bottleneck. In this paper we present a new software solution to the problem of automatic detection and segmentation of poly-metallic nodules in underwater images, which is not only accurate but so fast that real time image analysis is definitely in reach. Thus, an application on an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) seems possible in the near future.

After location and verification of exploitable mineral resources, mineral development re- quires capital goods, labor, and energy to extract the deposit. In addition, a growing social awareness of the need for a healthy environment re- quires inclusion of environmental burdens to the total costs incurred. This is because mineral development is detrimental to the environment in a number of ways. All mining .operations involve the separation of valuable minerals from the surrounding waste rock, which in turn re- quires permanent disposal of unwanted or un- used materials. Mine overburden, wastes, and tailings are often transferred to peripheral areas where they remain as unsightly features in the natural landscape. Some mine spoils contain harmful or contaminating substances as heavy metal salts or acid forming materials which subsequently are released to the environment. Many types of mining operations handle significant quantities of water during extraction or beneficiation processes. When discharged, the quality of such water often is unsuitable for residential, agricultural, or recreational use. Since mining activity disturbs the natural vegetation in the project area, water may be allowed to transport soil materials into streams, causing erosion and siltation. In particular, surface mining operations disturb the top layers of soils, resulting in losses of productivity for long periods of time. Excavation, transportation, and further processing of large volumes of both ores and waste materials generate substantial quantities of particulate and gaseous emissions, some of which contain metal dusts or compounds of sulfur. Such fugitive and point source emissions can be transported beyond the confines of mineral operations to cause annoyance and damage at more distant locations. Environmental degredation or pollution can be viewed as the alteration of the environment by man through the introduction of materials which represent potential or real hazards to hu- man health, disruption to living resources and ecological systems, impairment to structures or amenity, or interference with socially desired uses of the environment. The significance of environmental degradation is reflected in its effects on a range of receptors, including humans as well as the resources and ecological systems upon which we depend. Pollution also is judged in the social context of damage to environmental structures and amenities. The demand for restoration and maintenance of environmental quality presents the mineral industry with a challenge to successfully man- age discharges and returns to the environment in order to avoid undesirable and harmful consequences. FOR many years the disk-type and cloth-covered drum filters have found widest application in liquid-solids separation, which uses continuous filters. The disk type is less expensive, occupies less floor space per square foot of filtration area, and re- quires negligible down time for filter media changing. However, because filter cloth is billowed out by the blowback in the cake discharge, it is very short-lived if the scraper blades are set too close. Consequently cake weight is very important in assisting cake discharge, which normally necessitates a minimum cake thickness of 3/8 to ½ in. Also, the vertical position of the disks eliminates the possibility of efficient cake washing for removal of soluble values. The disk-type filter is generally limited, therefore, to applications that require no cake washing and form relatively thick cakes within the normal range of filter cycle times. The conventional cloth-covered drum filter is a more flexible unit, permitting wider variation in the percentage of cycle time devoted to cake formation, dewatering, or washing, as required by the application. Thinner filter cakes can be discharged be- cause a horizontal line across the filter medium at the location of the scraper blade is equidistant from the edge of the blade at all points. The scraper blade therefore may be set a short distance from the filter medium or, where wire winding is not used, a floating scraper can be utilized so that the contour of the cloth can be followed. The drum filter is generally employed when there are difficult filtering slurries with resultant thin cakes or when cake washing to recover soluble values must be practiced.

This work explores the effect of ore hardness variability on the design of a solar photovoltaic system with battery storage and grid backup, to operate a semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). First, a case of two synthetic ore populations was studied, without any consideration of spatial distribution. The mean and variance of the ore hardness (measured in specific energy consumption) of both populations were subjected to a sensitivity analysis. The operation was evaluated with one and two stockpiles. The latter allows classifying according to ore hardness to adapt the SAG energy consumption to the solar cycle. The results show that using two stockpiles allows achieving a larger autonomy (i.e., fewer energy imports) at lower total costs, especially when the difference of mean hardness between the two populations is large. The difference in variance (between the two populations) has a smaller impact on the design recommendations. Second, a case study was performed considering the spatial distribution of geometallurgical units. Two cases were considered: (a) brownfield, when there is historical information of the actual variability of the ore hardness; and (b) greenfield, when the system design relies mainly on geometallurgical modeling. Brownfield and greenfield planning result in similar sizing recommendations of the solar power plant if precise drill cores are available. In this case, geometallurgical modeling is an effective tool for forecasting the energy demand necessary for designing the power plant. INTRODUCTION Solar energy can help make mining more sustainable (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017). With falling battery costs, an autonomous solar supply is soon to become an economical alternative in many parts of the world, even in the presence of a larger power grid (Child et al., 2017). Although this, places with high solar radiation such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, nowadays show a large potential of incorporating solar energy as a supply of energy. Many of the Chilean copper mines are in this zone making it interesting to study their compatibility and potential of integrating this renewable source to their operation. The power demand in a copper mineral processing plant is determined by the main power loads in grinding and flotation, with grinding typically the largest power consumer, especially the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills (Wei and Craig, 2009). In Chile, it corresponds on average the 50% of the electrical energy consumption (COCHILCO, 2013). Solar energy production is determined by the irradiance perceived into the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (which varies through the geographic location) and several other climatic parameters such as the current season, humidity, temperature, altitude, and others (Molina et al., 2017). Also, solar energy is only generated during the sun hours, getting to a maximum generation at a certain peak hour during midday, and finally dropping to zero during the night. This shows a cyclic parabolic profile as shown in Figure 1. Due to the SAG mill operated continuously, the power supply always must be available. During the night, to continue supplying the energy, it is necessary to complement the solar power generation with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which will act as a power backup and a buffer. For the optimal sizing of this PV- BESS system, information of the demand profile is needed (Pamparana et al., 2017). In the case of the SAG mill operation, the resulting demand relates to the ore-hardness for a specific throughput and grind size (Morrell, 2004). Therefore, for a given throughput and target grind size, a harder ore would require more power, and variable hardness results in more variable demand and a subsequent need for larger energy storage (Bueno et al., 2015). The following paper deals with a method for the" Proximate Analysis" of Chloridized Ores, which are free from arsenic, antimony and lime. When these are present the analysis is rendered far more complicated, and many of the methods which I am about to describe could not be applied. Sufficient scope is therefore offered for discussing the analysis, when these metals are present, in a separate paper, which I hope to contribute at a future date.I am fully aware that this method is far from being perfect. No doubt many, modifications and improvements will suggest themselves to my readers, and I trust that this paper will be the means of giving a certain impetus to the study of Proximate Analysis which at the present time is practically dormant. For the benefit of my readers who are not initiated into the details of ordinary estimations, I have briefly described well known methods, which, however, will be found fully described in most text-books of analysis. Assuming that the ore contains. sulphates and chlorides of soda and magnesia, sulphates, sulphides, chlorides and oxides of copper, lead, iron, zinc, manganese and silver chloride, the analysis would be conducted as follows. THE compression of gases to a very high degree, for purposes of scientific research, has long presented serious difficulties to the physicist. Great advances have been made of late years in the construction of ordinary air or exhaust pumps, while very little has been done towards the improvement of compression pumps. The principal difficulties encountered in the construction of such apparatus are the existence of the so-called "dead space" in the pump barrels, leakage of the piston packings under high pressure, and the trouble arising from the unequal expansion of parts caused by the development of the latent heat of the gas during compression. Of these obstacles to success, the "dead space" is far the most serious, as it fixes a limit to the performance of the pump beyond which it is impossible to carry the compression. Evaluating surface and subsurface conditions for marine foundations (bridges, causeways, terminals, etc.) is often done with a limited amount of data. Subsurface information for these projects is primarily acquired using traditional methods, such as boreholes, test pits or divers, which tend to be expensive and limited in the area of coverage. A number of geophysical methods, including precision bathymetry, sidescan sonar, and seismic reflection or subbottom profiling are extremely cost-effective and obtain significantly more data than can be acquired using traditional intrusive methods. These geophysical methods provide detailed surface images and continuous profiles of the subsurface stratigraphy. This information can be invaluable for selecting the best location for geotechnical boreholes and to map potential geohazards such as submarine slides and filled or open scour holes. Offshore investigations conducted for a proposed highway bridge (Knik Arm Bridge, Cook Inlet, AK), the retrofit of two existing bridge (Antioch and Dumbarton Bridges, CA) and a proposed cruise ship terminal (Ketchikan, AK) used a combination of geophysical methods to map water depth, detect and map debris on the seabed, map the thickness of unconsolidated sediment, determine the depth to bedrock and identify potential geohazards such as scour holes. The results of the geophysical investigations will be used to select locations for obtaining geotechnical borings, to extrapolate geologic information between existing or proposed boreholes, evaluate the potential depth of scour and design a pile support pier. Geotechnical engineers, offshore contractors and bridge designers are realizing the importance of the early use of offshore geophysics for (i) site characterization, (ii) to reduce the uncertainty of geotechnical conditions thus avoiding designs that may be overly conservative and thus more expensive and (iii) to assist in selecting locations for geotechnical borings.

It has been generally accepted as a fact that cast-iron, under the influence of repeated shocks, becomes brittle, and will finally break under a blow which otherwise it would have withstood. It will probably surprise metallurgists, therefore, to learn that experiment disproves the supposed fact, and establishes exactly its opposite. The result of about a thousand tests of bars of cast-iron of all grades, from the softest foundry-mixtures to the strongest car-wheel metal, enables me to assert with confidence that, within limits, cast-iron is materially strengthened by subjection to repeated shocks or blows. It is very well known that the usual process of annealing castings—such, for example, as car-wheels—increases their strength by relieving cooling-strains. But it is not well known (if known at all prior to this announcement) that the molecules of cast-iron are capable of movement—for they do not touch each other*—without the necessity of heating the casting, and that they can thus rearrange themselves in comfortable relation to their neighbors, and relieve the overcrowding near the surface of the casting. In more technical words, a molecular annealing may be accomplished at ordinary temperatures which will release the strains in the castings, precisely as does annealing by slow cooling in heated pits or ovens. Hi-tech Project, mainly including the high-efficient air purifying mineral compound material indoor, the clay elementary antibacterial materials, the masonry cement/coating/putty/compound with preventing radon radiation, environmental friendly composite functional coatings, mosquito repellent and healthcare material and zeolite-based energy-saving composite materials, were introduced. On the ‘Majdan III’ open pit mine, supplying with brick clays the production plants of the industry of building material ‘Potisje-Kanjiza’ from Kanjiza, a modern ECS (excavator-conveyor-spreader) complex was built, integrating four bucket excavators, six conveyors and one spreader into a whole. This complex connects the mineral-exploitation unit with the final brick-products plant of the company. Monitoring and management of the ECS complex is carried out by modern computer-supported information-management system (IMS) implementing most modern measuring-regulation, computer and GPS equipment. It was concluded that, for safety reasons, the functions of the IMS should be developed by a component of active visual monitoring of the ECS complex. For this purpose, the task of making a project on intelligent system for visual monitoring of the ECS complex was entrusted to the Department of Computer Application at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper gives a review of basic project solutions. The definition of mineral rents has historically been somewhat unclear, but a growing understanding of the source and composition of the revenues that comprise these rents mean that they can be more easily identified and quantified. Furthermore the way in which the flow of the rents from mineral developments are captured and then distributed has been a point of contention amongst the various stakeholders. Investors, the host government, the resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous groups and land owners are identified in this paper as the principal participants in mineral development and while each is entitled to a portion of the rent, the size of their portions will differ. A competitive rent-sharing model for southern African countries has been established and indicates how the range of stakeholders could be rewarded for their contribution. Acceptance of the sharing ratios amongst the recipients is a function of their understanding of the size of the rent and their position in the hierarchy of stakeholders. At first glance investors appear to receive the largest share of the rent, but they disburse some of the rent to hidden costs, which when all is said and done, means that investors and host governments retain approximately equal shares of the mineral rent. Both the investor and government are faced with the dilemma of how to equitably distribute the rents they have captured to minority stakeholders. Government captures corporate tax, mineral royalties and a wide range of subordinate taxes, but is required to construct policies that will ensure distributional equity among the various levels of government as well as among the provinces that comprise the country. Investors will have to ensure that a portion of the rents they capture are diverted to other stakeholders namely resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous peoples groups and the landowners. This paper identifies the major recipients of rent and provides some indication of equitable distribution ratios for mineral wealth among them?a first step in ensuring that mineral development is compatible with long-term sustainable development and in the best national interests.

INTRODUCTION The selection of mass mining methods is the situation facing not only planners of new operations, but also those involved with cur- rent operations, including the eventual change from open-pit to underground. Increasing ground control problems on many mines, plus a better understanding of dilution and ore loss problems have meant a review of current mining methods and support techniques. Experiments are only successful if conducted in the right mining environment and on the right scale. Mining personnel have been known for their conservatism and will tend to persevere with an established method rather than change; often, hidden costs will obscure the correct economic assessment. An established mining sequence is not necessarily correct in the long term. However, recommendations to change are usually met with opposition because of inconvenience, temporary production problems and the desire for a trouble-free guarantee. In any planning exercise, care must be taken that time and money are not wasted in trying to achieve the unattainable. During the decision-making period, production personnel must be involved, and, if possible, they should visit similar omrations to that proposed. Co-operative production personnel will help ensure success. Descriptions of mining methods are available in technical papers and books, and it is not intended to discuss this aspect, but, rather, the various factors which must be recognised before arriving at a final selection. In another paper presented at this Conference (Heslop and Laubscher, 1981) factors affecting ore recovery and dilution are discussed in greater detail for various cave mining methods. PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS Comprehensive Geological Data. Geological information is available during the exploration stage, but, often, core from exploration drilling is not analysed with the selection of a mining method in mind. Drilling costs are high, therefore the maximum benefits must be derived from this operation. Holes which have not intersected ore may provide data on possible shaft sites, and 35 mm colour slides of core, sound logging and geomechanics classification, will provide a record which can be used with confidence at a later date. Intersections of the various rock types should be kept for future study; for example, is weathering likely to be a problem, bearing in mind that this can be accelerated in the warm, humid atmosphere of an underground mine. The accumulation of data required to select a mining method starts with initial geological work in the target area, whether this be surface mapping or a diamond drill hole. Publications. As technical papers, reports and books are used in the selection of mining methods, an appeal is made to authors to describe the geological environment so that readers can relate to their own conditions. Not enough emphasis is given to the problems experienced and the techniques employed to overcome them. Follow-up papers are seldom written and we should be prepared to discuss our failures. Diagrams are often misleading, as the ideal and not actual situations are depicted. The caved ore/waste interface is not a straight line, and whereas this may not be significant in a diagram of a 200-117 draw height, it certainly is in sub-level caving with draw zones only 1 - 2 m width but up to 20 m high. SUMMARY OF FACTORS AFFECTING THE SELECTION OF UNDERGROUND MASS MINING METHODS (a) Regional rock stresses and mining geometry. (b) The geomechanics rock mass classification of the orebody and surrounding rock mass. (c) Ratio of the surface area of the ore/unpay interface to the contained ore which determines ore losses and dilution. (d) The cavability and fragmentation data of the ore and hangingwall. (e) The mineral distribution in the orebody and its dilution zone.
