"With the expansion of “green” energy technologies, the demand for the critical raw materials required to sustain this growth is increasing. Many E-tech elements, including tellurium (Te) and rare earth elements (REEs), suffer from high supply shortage risk and the need for more diversified metal supply routes is driving research into alternative resources. Hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts, seafloor deposits of Fe- and Mnoxyhydroxides that form from the direct precipitation from seawater, present a potentially important future source of E-tech elements. With growing interest in the potential wealth of these deposits and the issuing of permits for deep-sea mining and exploration, more work is underway to understand the nature of ferromanganese crust deposits, their elemental concentrations and distributions, and the potential impacts of mining activities.This research focusses on the formation of ferromanganese crust deposits and processes that control the extreme enrichment of elements such as Te, Co and REEs. The crusts were systematically sampled and mapped between ~ 1000 – 4000 m depths using ROV ISIS, from a range of environments, substrates and morphologies from Tropic Seamount (NE Atlantic) in order to determine the seamount-scale factors that control major and trace elemental concentration variations. These factors include depth, surface roughness and micro-bathymetry, location relative to long-term mean current direction and energy, influence of tidal energy dispersion across the seamount, sediment supply, substrate lithology, biological productivity and phosphatisation. The study analyses trace-element characteristics of 100 ferromanganese crust samples alongside standard reference materials NOD-A-1 and NOD-P-1 (US Geological Survey manganese nodules). At this initial stage, we report results from whole rock acid digestion and ICP-MS analyses."

The scaling characteristics of three Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated by determining their weight gain vs. time curves at 1600° to 2000° F. The scales formed thereby have been examined using the techniques of X-ray diffraction and spectrographic and metal-lographic analyses in an attempt to explain the discontinuities in the curves and to elucidate the mechanism of scaling. DESPITE the considerable number of investigations that have been carried out on heat resistant alloys, the characteristics of the scales formed at high temperatures are not fully known. The research reported here was undertaken in an attempt to ascertain the mechanism of scaling of the stainless steels. Scaling experiments were carried out first, the weight increase of the specimens being followed continuously with time. It was observed that, as well as showing the expected decrease in oxidation rate with time, the oxidation curves showed breaks corresponding to intermediate periods of accelerated oxidation, after which protectiveness again increased. This phenomenon was observed with austenitic stainless steels (types 302, 309, and 330) and with Fe-Cr alloys (types 410, 430, and 446), but only the latter are treated in this report. An examination of the scales was made using the techniques of X-ray diffraction and spectrographic and metallographic analyses in an attempt to obtain a correlation between the nature of the scales and the oxidation curves. A search through the literature revealed only a very few previous reports of such periods of accelerated oxidation. Dunn' found breaks in the oxidation-time curves of some Cu-Si alloys but saw no rational explanation of the phenomenon. Heindlhofer and Larsen2 attributed a discontinuity in the weight gain-time curve of iron at 1290°F to the formation of blisters, the subsequent cracking of which exposed an unprotected surface and permitted rapid oxidation until a new protective scale had been reestablished. They advanced no explanation, however, for what they termed the peculiar behavior of a 27 pct Fe-Cr alloy at 2000°F which gained weight very rapidly in between two periods of very slow weight gain. Portevin, Pretet, and Jolivet3 in describing breaks in the weight gain-time curves of Fe-A1 alloys suggested that they might be associated with the occurrence of localized and deeply oxidized areas on the specimens. Bandel4 in a general discussion of oxidation curves of heat resistant alloys considered that the discontinuities were due to a local disruption of the protective layer by the growth of iron-rich oxides. Day and Smith" in their report on the scaling of a large number of iron alloys noted but did not explain occasional relatively rapid changes in oxidation rate at higher temperatures. Chevenard and Wache6 found breaks, often two per specimen, in the oxidation curves of an 18-8 type alloy. They suggested that the cause might be a depletion in chromium of the surface layer of metal due to its selective oxidation, the resultant high concentration of iron and nickel in the scale leading to a poorly protective scale. McCullough, Fontana, and Beck' explained the breaks in the oxidation curves of types 304, 430, and 410 alloys as due to mechanical ruptures. Experimental Work Table I lists the chemical compositions of the materials used. Cylindrical specimens 1/4 in. in diam and 11/2 in. long were machined from cold rolled % in. rod. After a fine finish cut with a sharp tool, the specimens were abraded while still mounted on the lathe with Nos. 2, 1, 0, and 00 metallographic grade emery papers. A 3/64 in. hole was drilled at a distance of 1/8 in. from one end to permit suspension in the furnace. Specimen Nos. 1, 2, and 3 were tested with this surface preparation. All others, after being similarly prepared, were electropolished in a perchloric-acetic electrolyte, electrical contact being made by pressing a tapered platinum hook into the drilled hole. Staff turnover percentages on projects in the minerals sector are at levels that would not be accepted in business less than five years ago. While this is being driven in part by the shortage in skills to service the industry there are underlying factors, beyond the increases in remuneration, adding to the turnover. Having identified the five major reasons why people do not stay, this paper confirms that leaders and the various styles are common to all companies. The paper comments briefly on these major reasons and suggests the problem is firmly with management. It also offers possible remedies to reduce the attrition and therefore improve the opportunities for a quality project evaluation.

A dynamic model that predicts the variation of carbon content with time in the argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) process has been developed. The model recognizes three distinct zones in the AOD vessel: the tuyere region in which the blown oxygen reacts very rapidly with the metal components in the molten alloy; a region in which bubbles of inert gas and oxide drop lets rise through the molten alloy; and a zone in which the slag layer can interact with the molten alloy. The process is dynamically controlled by the rate at which dissolved oxygen, produced on the surface of rising oxide droplets, and dissolved carbon diffuse through the molten alloy to react at the surface of the rising bubbles. The rate at which carbon and oxygen react on the bubble surface is assumed to be intrinsically very fast. Predicted decarburization rates compare reasonably well with rates measured in the AOD vessel at Middleburg Steel and Alloys. The model has been developed primarily to allow development of a time-optimal blowing stategy for the AOD vessel.

The insufficiency of Boolean Logic and ?hard? decision making to represent and manage spatial data in set with their spatial errors comprises a remarkable difficulty for widely accepted estimation procedures, in realistic planning of space geometric problems and management through a GIS. Fuzzy logic as well as other theories such as the theory of Probabilities, Bayesian theory etc., contribute substantially towards this direction. Data are accompanied by their accuracy and are managed through the applications and modules of Spatial Analysis, aiming to access a decision with known accuracy and fuzziness. As it concerns the cases of waste sanitary landfill sites designing, which are based on the construction of a bank, the problem shown by this paper, seems to be quite serious. The determination of the theoretical waste disposals body in the landfill is based on an uncertain Digital Elevation Model (DEM). As this model is a result of a procedure enclosing errors and inaccuracies, it is for certain a non - error free model. Thus, the geometric computation of the excavation quantities and the waste disposals solid body volume, misquotes the expected standard theoretical computation and imports the need to decide and set a risk level for the project.

Problems discussed concern encountering of high temperatures [up to 66°C] and heavy flow of water [150 L.P.S] during the construction of the 10.15 MØH.R.T. for the 2500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Project in the Himalayas(India). Over a length of 2500 M progress of work got seriously affected resulting in excessive time for completion - two years [max. monthly progress achieved was 178 M [Heading]. Many innovative and simple steps were taken to complete the work in these inhospitable environs affecting working of both men and machines. Also it meant a review of the design of concrete lining. Other geological conditions affecting the progress are also described.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. From 2003 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A major focus of the investigations is developing strategies to maximise the beneficial use of the limestone that will be mined. Laboratory columns and field test pad investigations have been ongoing for six years examining limestone blends. Trial dumps utilising truck placement and conveyor/stacker placement and blending of limestone and acid generating rock have recently been constructed. In addition, based on initial results, investigations aimed at further evaluating the performance of limestone covers in this high rainfall environment have commenced. A significant finding has been the identification of strong armouring layers on sulfide surfaces within well-blended material and under limestone covers. These layers effectively isolate sulfides and thus progressively slow the oxidation rate to a level where the alkalinity load from the limestone exceeds the rate of acid generating. ARD is controlled and neutral low metal drainage results. The results have demonstrated that although limestone blending is effective, it is necessary to ensure that all size fractions within the blend receive adequate acid neutralising capacity to buffer the potential acidity. Because the sulfur content generally increases and the acid neutralising capacity decreases with decreasing particle size in limestone blends, the amount of limestone required greatly exceeds the stoichiometric requirement. This paper describes the development of limestone blending specifications for potentially acid forming overburden and presents the results of the ongoing limestone cover trials at the Grasberg mine.

An experimental investigation of the dissolution of three base-metal sulfide minerals, namely, CuFeS2, ZnS and PbS, in hydrochloric acid medium in the presence of manganese dioxide is reported. Polarization measurements and leaching studies were employed in the study. Dissolution occurred in the following three ways: by the cyclic action of the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couple, by galvanic interaction between Mn02 and the sulfide minerals, and because of chlorine evolution from the system. The later two routes were found more effective at higher HCI levels. PbS appeared to be oxidized easily, whereas CuFeS2 was the most difficult to dissolve. ZnS dissolution fell in between PbS and CuFeS2.

"A multi-seam underground mining operation employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods provides 35 per cent of Smoky River's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes) from the Smoky River coal field. Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity, which has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief to the area, has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Coal transportation to the central preparation plant incorporates a 3 km long underground conveying system. The company is committed to efficient resource recovery and a safe and healthy working environment. Introduction The Smoky River Coal operations (SRC) are centered in the Smoky River coal field located in west central Alberta, some 360 km west of Edmonton and 20 km from the Town of Grande Cache (Fig. 1). Combined mining operations produce 2 million tonnes per year run-of-mine coal from which 1.65 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile, coking coal are obtained. The underground mining operation, employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods, provides 35 per cent of SRC's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes). Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief in the area. This has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Background Exploration of the Smoky River coal field took place over four decades commencing in 1926. McIntyre Mines Limited (parent to Smoky River Coal Ltd.}, commenced development of the property in 1968 having secured a long-term contract for the delivery of coal to Japan. Production of underground coal at Smoky River commenced toward the end of 1969 and has been continuous on the property since that time. Originally, two underground mines were opened. Original planning envisaged the use of room-and-pillar techniques to develop blocks of coal for subsequent extraction by longwall retreat mining. Following initial development, two longwall units were established, the first in November 1970 in No. 5 Mine and the second in February 1971 in No. 2 Mine. Difficulties were experienced on both units, and production commitments could not be achieved. The longwalls were discontinued, and mechanized room-and-pillar was subsequently used for all underground mining."

Excessive floor and side deformation are major problems in deep coal mine entries in Europe, and in particular in the UK where rockbolt support is used at depths of working of around 3000 ft. This has major economic and safety implications for the industry resulting in the potential for sidewall instability, disruption to mine infrastructure, (belt conveyors, floor mounted transport systems and powered supports), and the requirement to safely manage excavation of large quantities of floor material. European research aimed at improving deformation control is described. The outcomes include innovations in support systems, materials and installation practices, as well as better methods for predicting and monitoring deformation levels. As coal mines get deeper, some entry deformation is inevitable, and methods for mechanised removal of floor lift and repair of sidewalls have been developed to allow production to continue as mining clearances are re-established.

Precipitation of the phase Co3Ti (Cu3Au type) from a Co-5 pct Ti a11oy has been investigated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Oscillation and transmission Laue patterns of specimens aged for short-time periods at 600" C indicate the formation of titanium-rich and titanium-poor zones coherent with the {100} matrix planes. Longer aging times at 600° C establish that the equilibrium phase also forms on the {100} matrix planes as platelets. These observations are corroborated by electron metallography; electron diffraction studies show the phase Co3Ti to be ordered. A probable sequence of the precipitation reaction is discussed. A previous publication by two of the present authors reported on the phase relations and precipitation in Co-Ti alloys containing up to 30 pct Ti.1 The results of this investigation established the existence of a new face-centered cubic inter metallic phase, ranging in composition from about 17.0 to 21.7 pct Ti at temperatures below 1000° C The decomposition of the fcc supersaturated solid solution was studied employing hardness and electrical resistivity measurements. The changes in hardness upon precipitation in alloys containing 3, 6, and 9 pct* Ti were found to be associated with an initial increase in hardness followed by a plateau and then a second, more pronounced hardness increase. Investigation of this behavior by electrical resistivity measurements suggested that two different kinetic processes were involved, which, when interpreted in terms of the kinetic relation,2-4 indicated that initial precipitation was in the form of thin plates. On continued aging, the plates impinged during the growth process. The general features of these findings have been confirmed by Bibring and Manenc,5 while, in addition, they report the phase to be ordered. The present investigation was undertaken to provide more definite information on the structural relationships between the precipitate and the matrix. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of a (20-5 pct Ti alloy were prepared from the melt employing the Bridgman technique. Poly crystalline rod, 1/2 in. in diam, prepared from vacuum-melted material, was machined to 3/8- in. diam to remove any surface contamination that may have resulted from hot-working. The crystals were grown under a purified hydrogen atmosphere in high-purity alumina crucibles heated by induction. Considerable difficulty was encountered in attempting to grow monocrystals because of the high melting point of the alloy and the high solute concentration. However, one crystal about 6 in. long was obtained which was essentially a single crystal except for one or two very small grains around the periphery. The as-grown crystal was solution heat-treated for 24 hr at 1200°Cin a purified argon atmosphere and water-quenched. One-quarter-in. slices were taken from each end of the solution heat-treated crystal for chemical analyses, and the remainder of the crystal was mounted and oriented by the back reflection Laue Method. The chemical analysis of the crystal was as follows: Pct Ti Pct 0 Pct C Pct N Pct H Pet CO 5.29 0.08 0.004 0.002 0.0003 Balance By proper tilting of the crystal, it was possible to obtain slices 1/32 in. thick of [loo] and [110] orientation. The solution heat-treated crystal slices were sealed in silica capsules for the aging treatments, with titanium sponge placed at one end of the capsule to act as a getter. All slices were water-quenched from the aging temperatures, the capsules being broken under the water to ensure a rapid quench. Thinning of the slices for transmission X-ray studies was accomplished by a combination of mechanical and electrolytic techniques, the final thickness being about 0.1 mm. Laue patterns of the solution heat-treated crystal indicated that no strain was introduced by the thinning technique. ELECTRON METALLOGRAPHY After X-ray examination, the structural changes attending the precipitation were followed by examination of direct carbon replicas of polished and etched surfaces of the single-crystal slices and extracted phases. The earliest indication of significant structural change was observed after aging at 600°C The structure of a heavily etched, solution-treated crystal is shown in Fig. l(a). Aside from the etch pit pattern, no regularity of background structure is observed. On the other hand, in the background of the specimen heated for 500 hr at 600°C, the etching pattern shows a directionality indicating the influence of minute precipitate particles, Fig. l(b). The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages public conservation land throughout New Zealand in terms of section 6 of the Conservation Act 1987. In brief, this requires DOC to manage the natural and historic resources of the land; promote the benefits of conservation to present and future generations; provide information about conservation; to foster recreation on the land; and allow for its use for tourism.   Locally the department's Tauranga Area Office manages approximately 60 000 hectares of Conservation Park (known as the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park) which includes early gold mining relics and former bush tramways associated with the logging and the mining industries. The Department has recently developed the Kaimai Heritage Plan which seeks to restore some of the relics and encourage involvement by the local communities in the restoration and interpretation of their history in the hills. It provides a unique opportunity for the Department to help bring alive for New Zealanders an important, and often overlooked, part of our history as a nation in a stunning natural setting.   The purpose of this presentation is to: +        display the endeavour and ingenuity of the early miners and loggers, the relics of those industries and the dramatic environment in which they worked; +        identify the linkages between those early industries and gold mining today; and +        promote a co-operative approach to heritage and recreation management involving all facets of the community.

THOSE interested in the early developments and experiments, both in the United States and abroad, that led to modern rock dusting, will find an excellent summary in a paper by George S. Rice,13 published in 1914. The period from 1914 to 1924 was one of intensive experiment on coal-dust explosions in the United States; abroad, war activities and rehabilitation stopped this work over a large part of that decade. Amer-ican findings were published by the Bureau of Mines, particularly in Bulletins 167 and 268. It is convenient to consider that in the United States rock dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines was initiated in 1924 with the publication of tentative specifications.17 This was followed in 1925 by an investigation of methods and costs12 and approval by the American Engineering Standards Committee of a Recommended American Prac-tice.18 Approximately 13 years have elapsed since this approval, and inasmuch as changes in rock-dusting practice in the United States have been evolutionary, it is necessary to consider this entire period as "recent" in some phases of the work. There have been no official changes in the Recommended American Practice since its approval. This paper reviews as briefly as possible knowledge acquired since the issue of the earlier papers mentioned, through experience in mines and experiments conducted by different organizations engaged in the pro-motion of mine safety.

"The Keely mine at Dagger, Indiana, is one of the few mines that is being operated successfully on a cooperative basis. This shaft mine is developing 133 acres of coal in the Indiana No. 6 bed, which here averages 5-1/2 feet thick and. lies about 110 feet below the surface. Thirty seven (37) miners and twenty (20) company men or day man are employed, and the daily output is around 300 tons. Practically the entire production is sold by contract for railroad use. No mining machines are used and all coal is produced by pick work.The mine was originally owned and operated by the Stockton Coal. Co. of Dugger, but about eight years ago it was leased to Mr. Roy Price. He sub-leased the property to ten miners, who formed an association known as the Dugger Mutual Coal and Mining Co., to work the mine cooperatively.At first many difficulties were encountered; the cooperative idea is an old one, but the practice was new to those interested. Some of the men were energetic, ambitious workers; others were inclined to let their associates produce the coal but wanted to share in the profits. In time, after a hard struggle and many changes in the personnel of the company, business-like methods were adopted and the mine was put on a paying basis."

Noranda's Process Reactor and Codelco's Teniente Converter are physically similar vessels, which leads to the commonly held misconception that the two processes are the .same. However, notable differences in chemistry, operating philosophy, and construction make them quite dissimilar. This paper compares and contrasts the Noranda Reactor and the Teniente Converter, and attempts to explain some of the apparent differences in behaviour and performance. The results of a worldwide survey of most operating Noranda Reactors and Teniente Converters, along with those processes that have ceased operation or are planning to be started-up in the future, are presented.

Risk management has rapidly developed to become an integrated, holistic approach that now encompasses the main risk elements such as product quality control, occupational health and safety, security, environmental liability, social issues and related management information systems. Given the obvious economic benefits, a seamless blend of risk management components has become essential to allowing organisations to sustain a competitive advantage, and is also looked upon as an important attribute in organisational growth. Juxtaposed with this management philosophy is the global trend towards outsourcing, which has seen the emergence of independent, and specialist risk management organisations. The New Millennium will undoubtedly see a shift away from "in-house" risk management practices, and consequently, the selection of a suitable risk management partner - a major vehicle for improving shareholder value - will become an important strategic management decision.

As at any other mine in Canada, grade control procedures are used at Steep Rock Iron Mines (1) in order to ensure that concentrator and pellet-plant operator s have a uniform feed so that they can manufacture a pellet to suit buyers' specifications and (2) to maximize ore recovery so that as little as possible finds its way to the waste dump or is downgraded by contamination. At Steep Rock, material grading 40% to 66 % Fe is considered ore. The ore may contain up to 10% sulphur. These ranges create six different stock pile types, with the possibility of more if large concentrations of arsenic are encountered. Although grading and mining techniques used to accomplish these ends are fairly standard, there is an appreciation and willingness by hourly and staff pit personnel to make grade control effective. This produces vertical and horizontal communication, which is necessary for success in this field. At Steep Rock, the waste-to-ore ratio is greater than at any other iron ore mine in Canada. Also, a high percentage of the ore mined is direct pellet feed. For these reasons, .grade control is very important.

"Lindgren (1933) defined a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks associated with large quantities of gold and rare earth elements (REE) that extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Texas and eastern Mexico. The North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt since has been exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits. In New Mexico, Mid-Tertiary alkaline to calc-alkaline rocks are found with seven types of deposits in these districts: (1) polymetallic epithermal/mesothermal veins, (2) gold-bearing breccias/quartz veins, (3) Cu-Au, Au and Mo porphyry deposits, (4) skarns and carbonate-hosted deposits, (5) iron skarns and replacement bodies (with some gold), (6) gold placers, and (7) Th-REE (with some U, Nb) epithermal veins. Some of New Mexico’s largest gold and REE deposits are found within this belt. Their origin is not well understood, but a compilation of new data (age dates, isotopic and chemical analyses) allows for a better understanding. The diversity of igneous rocks and associated mineral deposits along this belt suggests that this region is characterized by highly fractionated and differentiated; multiple pulses of magmas and involves both upper mantle and lower crustal sources. Once magmas and metal-rich fluids reached shallow levels, local structures and wall rock compositions determined distribution of and final style of intrusions and resulting mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION Lindgren (1933) was one of the first geologists who noted that a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Trans-Pecos Texas, and eastern Mexico (Fig. 1) and that these rocks contain relatively large quantities of gold, fluorine, zirconium, rare earth elements (REE), and other elements. Since then, the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt has been explored and exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits, especially gold. The North American Cordilleran alkaline belt is a north-south belt of alkaline igneous rocks and crustal thickening, roughly coinciding with the Great Plains physiographic margin with the Basin and Range (Rio Grande rift) and Rocky Mountains physiographic provinces (Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Bonham, 1988; Thompson, 1991a; Richards, 1995; McLemore, 1996; Jensen and Barton, 2000; Kelley and Luddington, 2002). Deposits within this belt have produced significant amounts of gold in the United States and Canada and include Cripple Creek, Colorado (702 metric tons of gold production), Black Hills, South Dakota (235 metric tons gold production) and Landsky-Zortman, Montana. In New Mexico, the North American Cordilleran alkaline belt extends from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Raton, southward to the Cornudas Mountains, in the northern Trans-Pecos alkaline belt (Fig. 2). The alkaline-igneous related mineral deposits in New Mexico have been referred to as Great Plains Margin (GPM) deposits by North and McLemore (1986, 1988) and McLemore (1996, 2001). Alternative classifications by other workers include Au-Ag-Te veins (Cox and Bagby, 1986; Bliss et al., 1992; Kelley et al., 1998), alkalic-gold or alkaline-igneous related gold deposits (Fulp and Woodward, 1991a; Thompson, 1991a, b; Bonham, 1988; Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Richards, 1995), porphyry gold deposits, and the North American Cordilleran belt of alkaline igneous rocks (Woolley, 1987; Mutschler et al., 1991)."

"I. INTRODUCTIONA mechanism which is present in leukocytes and capable of releasing histamine from rabbit platelets was first described by Barbaro and Zvaitler in I966. A soluble mediator between rabbit leukocytes and platelets was also detected by Siraganian and Osier in 1971. This factor was isolated and characterized in 1971 by Benveniste et al. and named platelet activating factor i PAF). It was shown to be released from rabbit basophils through an antigen - IgE-dependent mechanism. The presence of PAF in human leukocytes' and its aggregation and releasing effects on human platelets were also demonstrated. Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group. an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon and a nonester link at the first carbon.' The structure of the mediator was found to be 1-O-alky1-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphoryl choline and it has been chemically synthesized.""' A variable portion exists in the alkyl group attached to the first carbon which can have a variety of molecular sizes such as C and C (where Cu is more abundant). Recent work by Pinckard et al."" has shown that there are at least five variations of the alkyl group.PAF has been shown to have a broad range of biological effects. Release of PAF from alveolar macrophages may be important in asthma, allergy, and shock states. In a rabbit model of antigen IgE anaphylaxsis. PAF can induce all of the effects of antigen challenge and. therefore is presumed to be a key mediator in production of anaphylaxsis. In addition to aggregating and degranulating platelets it is a potent chemoattractant."" and causes contraction of guinea pig ileum contraction of lung tissue and enhanced capillary permeability PAF has important effects in the kidney and is also known as the renal hypotensive factor proposed by Blank et al. who found the structure of PAF independently of Benveniste et al.'
