ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. Good morning, it is truly an honor to have been invited to speak before you today Before I begin my update on MSHA's activities, I?d Like t o quickly say a few words about the American mining congress and its mission in Washington, AMC is a national trade association representing most of the producers of the nation's metals, nonmetals and coal, we also represent the manufacturers of mining equipment and supplies and the financial and consulting institutions which service the mining industry. It is the diversity of our representation which gives us our greatest strength in our petitioning efforts, the administration and the members of congress know that an AMC position is the result of the careful consideration of a vastly diverse group of mining concerns. Our president, Al Overton, perhaps has the best description of AMC when he speaks of us as "the mining industry's eyes and ears and its collective voice in Washington."

The last coal-fired power plant to be built in Canada came into operation in 1994. Since then, Canada?s electricity requirements have grown substantially but no new coal-burning plants have been built. This country has abundant resources of coal from coast to coast, but in recent years, this has not affected our choice of fuel. In many other countries this is not the case, and the use of coal is growing rapidly. Although this presentation covers the topic from an Alberta perspective, some of the conclusions can be extrapolated to the rest of the country, and perhaps even to other countries. The coal found in the Alberta plains is particularly attractive because of its low cost and low sulphur content. Yet coal is no longer the fuel of choice, and a long-standing provincial government policy to favour coal for electricity generation has been ignored for more than a decade. Considering the lack of good alternatives, it seems obvious that we should look to coal as our primary energy source in the generation of electricity and for other industrial applications. This paper discusses some of the reasons that coal has fallen out of favour, particularly with respect to electricity generation. The significance of the deregulation of the electricity industry will not be ignored. In addition, the author will offer his opinion on the question of what it will take in order for coal to once again become the favoured fuel.

The fracture surfaces of specimens of titanium a1loys which exhibited susceptibility to subcritical crack growth in a wide variety of environments, including aqueous solutions, alcohols, hydrocarbon gases, carbm tetrachloride, and dry air, were examined. The dominant and characteristic fracture mode was cleavage. which became mixed with an increasing porportion of ductile fracture modes (dimples. and so forth) as the applied KI was increased. The cleavage plane in all the alloys was oriented at 15 deg from (0001) of the a phase. No indices could be assigned to the 15 deg cleavage Plane because of uncertainty as to which zone it belonged to. SLOW crack growth and delayed fracture take place in certain titanium alloys at stress intensity (KI) lower than the critical values for complete fracture (KIc) found in short-time tests for plane strain fracture toughness.' Such crack growth may take place in very dry air on sustained loading if the alloy contains a sufficient amount of hydrogen and if the stress intensity factor is higher than a threshold value designated KIH.2 Similarly, a number of environments such as water, alcohols, and hydrocarbons may cause slow crack growth provided the stress intensity factor exceeds the threshold value KISCC. In this paper it is intended to examine some fracto-graphic and crystallographic details of this subcritical crack propagation process as related to alloy composition, environment, and stress intensity. It has been previously reported that subcritical crack growth takes place in titanium alloys in aqueous environments by cleavage.2"6 The observations to be described here indicate that in the alloys investigated the mode of subcritical crack propagation is more dependent on the stress intensity during cracking than on the environment. The fracture mode is illustrated with photographs of the fracture surfaces at a wide range of magnifications. The crystallographic character of the cleavage mode is also presented and the results discussed. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The studies were made on four titanium alloys— Ti-8A1-1Mo-lV, Ti-5A1-2.5Sn, Ti-7Al-1Mo-lV, and Ti-0.350. Of these four alloys the first two were mill annealed and fine grained. The latter two were noncommercial and coarse grained, having been prepared for other experimental purposes. The crystallographic studies required a large-grain size. Consequently the fine-grained alloys were an- nealed in a vacuum at 1950°F and furnace cooled to produce samples for these studies. This treatment did not alter the microstructure significantly except for grain size. All the aluminum-containing alloys showed primary a with a network of ß-phase particles within the a grains; Figs. 1 and 2 show this microstructure for the specific case of fine-grained Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V. The cracks in the figures will be discussed later. Fractographic studies were made on all the alloys, but the electron fractographs displayed herein are from the Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V alloy in the fine-grained condition. Emphasis was placed on this commercial alloy because considerable information was available on the stress-corrosion cracking characteristics in a variety of environments. Sufficient supplementary studies of the alloy after the anneal to produce large grains were conducted to establish that the stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility and fractographic characteristics were not changed significantly. Thus it could be inferred that the crystallographic data obtained exclusively on large-grained specimens would apply also to fine-grained specimens. Fracture surfaces for study were obtained using precracked cantilever beam specimens loaded as described by Brown. The precracked section of a specimen was immersed in the environment of interest. Values of initial stress intensity factor Kli were chosen slightly higher than KISCC in order to obtain a fairly extensive region of slow crack growth. Fracture surfaces representative of a variety of stress intensity levels could then be examined because in the cantilever beam test KI increases as the crack propagates.

The Transportable Moisture Limits, as ,measured by the procedures laid down in The IMCO Code of Safe Practices for Bulk Cargoes, determine the target moisture contents for the concentrates produced at the West Coast Mines of Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery. Filtration of these concentrates gives moisture contents considered to be low in comparison with those achieved for similar sulphide concentrates, but which are very close to these Transportable Moisture Limits. The filtering techniques used are outlined and the problems associated with-maintaining concentrate moistures below the required limits, together with the methods used to solve these problems are discussed.

"Abstract - The Labrador Trough contains world-class iron deposits which have been mined since 1954. The direct shipping of Knob Lake ores were mined at Schefferville from 1954 to 1982. Concentrate production began in 1961 in the southwest end of the Trough, with three mines currently producing concentrate and pellets at a rate of 35 Mt per year. West and north of Schefferville, several billion tonnes of taconite have been outlined in fine-grained, cherty magnetite iron formation. Several deposits of highly metamorphosed magnetite-specularite iron formation are located west of Ungava Bay. Numerous studies have shown that this medium- to fine-grained iron formation can be beneficated to 66% to 68% iron. In the area from Wabush Lake to Mont-Wright, a medium- to coarse-grained friable specularite-quartz iron formation is repeated by folding to form several large deposits. In this area, three mining operations are located with reserves and resources in the order of 5 billion tonnes.The iron deposits occur within iron formation in sediments in the extensive Proterozoic geosyncline called the Labrador Trough. Several facies of iron formation within the Sokoman Formation reflect variations in chemical composition and depositional conditions. The correlation between the mineralogy and textures is discussed to illustrate the development of different types of iron ores. This band extends for about 1100 km southeast of Ungava Bay through both Quebec and Labrador. Further south, it turns southwest past the Wabush and Mont-Wright areas to within 300 km of the St. Lawrence River. The iron formation is essentially folded and faulted along most of its length. The degree of metamorphism is variable, ranging from intense in the northern and southern portions to greenschist facies in the central portion.The stratigraphy, structure and mineralogy of the producing mines are described along with the history of discoveries. Geological input is required to achieve the strict specifications of the international iron ore market."

A proposed method of drilling utilizes sequential detonation of two types of explosive charges delivered to the hole by a conventional drilling fluid through pipe. A shaped charge first produces a long thin hole. A second charge, called a gauging charge, is pumped into the thin hole, explodes, and enlarges it to full gauge. In one suggested configuration, the explosives are contained in cylindrical capsules 4- to 5-ft long. A drilling head is positioned 2- to 3-ft off bottom. When a capsule is pumped to the bottom of the hole and stops, pressure inside the drill pipe increases and differential pressure detonates the explosive. Primacord along the length of the capsule disintegrates the capsule. The debris circulates out of the hole with the drilling fluid. The gauging-charge action was examined using 2-ft cubes of Berea sandstone. The sandstone (18 per cent porosity) was vacuum-saturated with water and surrounded by concrete. To prevent reflected tensile pulses, the acoustical impedance of the concrete matched that of the sandstone. A 750-psig pressure was applied to a drilling fluid within a shaped-charge-formed hole before detonating the gauging charge. In these tests, 190 gm of rock were removed for each gram of explosive detonated. A similar series of experiments on low-porosity (0.40 per cent) metamorphic limestone provided a more rigorous test. Extensive fracturing from the gauging-charge action prevented an estimate of the volume of the expanded hole. The diameter of the hole was irregular, ranging from about 2 to 4 in, or about fivefold larger than the hole created by the shaped charge. INTRODUCTION In the past, explosives have found a varied but somewhat limited use in the oil field. An early well stimulation technique, still in use today, in vo lves shooting ni troglycerin to en large the borehole and to increase matrix permeability near the wellbore. Bullets and jets are now the conventional method of perforating casing and tubing. Detonations are frequently used to "back off" or "shoot off" stuck pipe and, of course, seismo-graphic work has long depended on explosive-generated pulses to find attractive earth structures. Efforts to use explosives in drilling operations have received limited examinations1-3 which, in one respect, is surprising because explosives offer one way to transmit large amounts of energy directly to the bottom of the hole. Recently, Ostrovskii l described a Russian method of drilling with explosives that utilizes small capsules containing explosives which are pumped into the mud stream to the bottom of a borehole. As the capsules leave the end of the drill pipe, a detonation mechanism is armed. Impact detonates the explosive. In another configuration, two liquids (an oxidizing agent and fuel) in the capsule are separated by a frangible membrane. Separately, the liquids are nonexplosive. Near the bottom of the drill pipe, the capsule passes through a narrow constriction which ruptures the membrane. The mixing of the liquids produces an explosive. Impact is again used to detonate the explosive. About the time Ostrovskii was developing his method, Humble Oil & Refining Co. was independently doing research on another explosive drilling concept based on the sequential detonation of two types -of explosive charges. The proposed technique consisted of alternately pumping a shaped charge and then a "gauging charge" down a well. The shaped charge should drill a long, tapered hole, and the gauging charge should expand it to full gauge. This paper presents the visualized drilling concept and gives results of laboratory work which showed that sequential firing of charges can form hole at an attractive charge-to-rock removal ratio. An important finding was that increased environmental pressure, which is to be expected in wells, increases rock removal efficiency of the gauging charge.

Electricity will play a major part in providing energy services in the 21st century. Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), that is accommodating the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations, will provide a focus for optimising the use of electrical energy. Environmental externalities may redefine the cost structure of electricity. Strong corporate environmental management will ensure that current environmental objectives are met and that future ones, identified by the ESD process and environmental externalities accounting, can be developed and implemented by receptive business managers. This paper addresses the current environmental issues of electricity production. It outlines a management strategy for the SECV becoming a community leader in protecting the environment. ESD is discussed in terms of using non-renewable resources wisely, extending their availability and putting in place mechanisms which ensure their ultimate substitution by renewable resources and conservation. The paper explores options for dealing with costing environmental externalities, particularly in relation to greenhouse emissions.

The trend in open pit mining has been to maintain cost competitiveness through economies of scale, particularly by implementing larger trucks and shovels. This paper considers the potential adverse impact of such scale adjustment, however, on dilution, maintenance, flexibility, and other aspects of operations. It examines the mine production characteristics affected by increased equipment size and attempts to quantify the impact on the overall operation. Reference is made to data from operations that have experienced a variety of equipment size ranges changes over the last decade.

Of the natural elemental surfur deposits of the world, volcanic deposits are not only the most spectacular, but probably the most widely distributed. As defined for the purposes of this paper, volcanic sulfur deposits include those associated with all phases of volcanic activity, including eruptive flows, and fumarolic and hot spring deposits. The line of demarcation between the latter and sedimentary deposits is not always clearly defined. Although volcanic sulfur has played an important role for centuries, serving as essentially the only source of sulfur, currently it is considered as purely marginal material. Volcanic deposits were relegated to this position by the advent of Frasch sulfur into world markets, which established sulfur prices and annual production levels with which volcanic sulfur cannot compete, Since early in the 20th century commercial interest in volcanic deposits of sulfur has been high only when premium markets are available. This occurred in the early 1950s and is the case at present. Considerable effort is currently being expended to establish new producers of volcanic sulfur, and to expand current operations or reactivate previous ones.

"Nuclear explosions are currently being planned for use in oil and gas production, the recovery of oil from oil shale, gas storage and copper leaching. The current status of each of these projects is discussed, with emphasis on the economics of each application. The first commercial application of nuclear explosives will be in gas stimulation. Project Gasbuggy will be rapidly followed by two additional shots, also related to gas production. These three events, each in a different formation, will be described in this paper with a discussion on their significance to the world's oil and gas industry. The use of nuclear explosives in oil and gas stimulation should be a standard accepted practice within a few years. Calculations based on explosions in media such as tuff, alluvium, granite and dolomite predict large increases in productivity when nuclear devices are used in tight, thick formations. The broken-up rock resulting from the explosion becomes the new well bore, with a production rate of six to twelve times that of a normally completed well.Also included in the paper is a discussion of the real or possible problems associated with nuclear explosive engineering. The only major foreseeable problem is the seismic shock wave. This limits the size of explosive which can be used near important surface structures. A discussion is included on the radiation problem, which we believe to be largely psychological in the case of contained explosions."

Two continuous computer controlled, remote air analysis (RAA) systems operate at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) to give early warning in case of an underground fire at ZC or New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mines. Air drawn from underground sampling points via a tube bundle system is analysed for carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. An alarm is sounded if the concentrations of these gases exceed bench mark figures.

No exact demarcation can be made between producfion engineering and engineering research projects which interest production engineers because the results of today's engineering research make possible many of the applied production engineering methods of tomorrow. A corollary of the development of fundamental research is that so-called practical research becomes necessary. Assuming engineering research to include all subjects related to oil and gas production on which knowledge is being increased through experimentation and through analyses of data obtained from both the laboratory and the field, a review of the work of 1932 shows that the fundamental concepts of at least three major problems have become better understood—bottom-hole pressures, solubility of gas in oil, and fluid movement—and that the established data on the relationships of oil and gas have been applied to obtain more efficient and more economic production of both. Engineers no longer are concerned primarily with the initial development of devices for obtaining the pressures at the bottom of wells. Advancement in the technique of obtaining reliable pressure readings in wells has been rapid. One of the first public suggestions regarding apparatus for obtaining precise information at the bottom of oil wells was made before the Petroleum Division of the A.I.M.E. in 1928. Even during the early development stages in East Texas, reservoir pressures were estimated from well-head observations. Soon, however, a number of proved devices and methods were available, and today bottom-hole pressures in many fields are being recorded and studied as an essential part of the production programs. The research now turns to interpretations of data, obtained with these devices, in terms of reservoir energy and to the development of methods whereby the oil and gas will be withdrawn in accordance with rational and equitable programs based on oil-gas-energy relationships. "It is generally agreed that dust characteristics play a role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of information on what the characteristics of mine dust actually are and how they vary among different mining regions, coal seams, etc. This paucity of data can generally be attributed to the serious problems encountered in collecting sufficiently large quantities of dust for conventional analytical procedures.Personal samplers are widely used in coal mines for regulatory and enforcement purposes. Generally, these provide information only on the total (respirable) dust loading in the mine atmosphere and on the mineral matter (primarily quartz) content of the respirable dust. A procedure has been developed by which samples collected with a slightly modified personal sampler can be analyzed for particle size distribution, total mineral matter content and elemental composition, in addition to the standard mass and quartz measurements. These analyses could readily be performed on a routine basis. Shape analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) could easily be included if appropriate shape criteria are established. Extension of the procedure to include the determination of complete size/specific gravity (composition) distributions is quite straightforward provided sufficiently large samples (at least 10 mg) can be collected. Typical sample sizes for a personal sampler carried by a miner for one shift range from about 0.5 to 2 mg.The basic procedure was developed and evaluated using synthetic mine dust prepared in the laboratory. Field tests in three working mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have confirmed the applicability of the approach to the real world. Particle size distribution measurements on mine dust collected in the modified personal sampler were found to agree closely with the results of simultaneous in situ measurements obtained using cascade impactors."
