In 1979 and 1980, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 15,600 acre (6,310 ha) Freel Peak RARE II area (No. 5271) in the Lake Tahoe Management Unit. This study by the Bureau of Mines indicates that potential for economic mineral resources in the area is slight. The only mineralized structures in the area consists of two quartz veins. One quartz vein, at the Mountain Top Mine (fig. 1), located by Fred Denner in 1932, is estimated to contain 2,000 tons (1,800 t) of silver and copper-bearing resources. Chip samples from the vein averaged 0.61 oz silver per ton (20.91 g/t), and 1.59 percent copper. The narrow vein is not economically mineable. The other quartz vein is poorly exposed and contains traces of molybdenum. A second reported molybdenum occurrence could not be substantiated.

The condition of the domestic mining industry is obviously affected by the cycles in general business conditions. This study, the results of which are presented in a series of 78 charts, attempts to examine the interrelationships between the general business indicators and the major statistical measures for the base-metals industries during the cycles in the United States economy following World War II. For these industries the cyclical problem is perhaps less acute than the secular-trend problem. However, short-run fluctuations in production and employment do have very important impacts upon the welfare of the regions which derive a significant portion of their income from base-metals mining and processing industries. Any information concerning the normal patterns of development as the industries enter into a cyclical recession will permit better forecasts and perhaps help promote measures to alleviate the distress that occurs. Also, a systematic study of the comparative movements among the statistical measures during a series of cycles can bring to the fore the economic causation involved, and perhaps, after intensive study, can lead to a better method of short-range forecasting for these industries. This study has not fully achieved these aims. However, observations which significantly aid the interpretation of the current monthly statistics on these commodities are made, and some very general conclusions are drawn. The charts are presented so the interested people can examine them and draw additional conclusions. The charts refer specifically to cyclical analysis. The technique of indexing each cycle to its turning point effectively subordinates the longer term trend movements of the data. Thus, certain general conclusions flowing from this study and from the continuing economic research of the Office of Chief Economist will aid the reader by clarifying the frame of reference within which the charts should be examined.

NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

My subject is gold price forecasting and monitoring as an important aspect of gold marketing. While I 'm specifically addressing gold, it is understandable that many other commodities could be readily substituted. Gold marketing must be studied as three distinct processes, and it is my intention to cover each of these processes in turn. First I?ll cover the process of gold price monitoring and forecasting in some detail. In order to select a method, or combination of methods, to be used to sell gold a determination of the future price profile is essential. The profitability of the sales effort will be determined, to a large extent, by how accurately the future price behavior of the gold market has been forecast.

Normally I would like to begin a talk on photogrammetry by defining the word. However modern technology has changed the science so radically that it bears little resemblance to its original definition. Photogrammetry as defined is a science of taking accurate measurements from photography. Today's photogrammetrist, in addition to working with photography, finds himself working with magnetometers, infrared scanners, radiometers, holo¬graphy, lasers, side-looking radar, digital interfaces, computers and countless other modern space age concepts. The modern photogrammetrist is a pilot, photographer, lab technician, mathematician, geologist, programmer, engineer, physicist, and cartographer. His modern instrumentation and many spheres of activity all have a role in the environmental sciences. For example, the magne¬tometer which measures the earth's magnetic fields is used to locate the earth's ore deposits. The infrared scanner captures the heat emitted from the earth to detect ground waters and thermal pollutions. To elaborate on each of his many endeavors would take volumes rather than this short paper. I have elected therefore to discuss what I feel is his most important role in the environmental sciences - that of cartographer.

THIS INFORMATION CIRCULAR contains injury and employment data for all stone quarries in the United States for the Calendar year 1960. This publication contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to the stone quarries and related operations, such as the manufacture of cement and lime, rock dressing etc., but excludes statistics for clay and sand and gravel operations. Data for these commodities may be found in other Bureau publications. Reports received from the operators are voluntary responses to the Bureau's request for information; therefore, the figures may not be complete for the industry. However, since these data contribute greatly to the promotion of safety, every effort has been made to make them representative of the industry.

NORTH AMERICA has for many years led the world in phosphate production, but with development of African deposits and their marketing conditions with respect to European countries, this leadership will shortly pass to Africa. Algeria, Egypt, Tunis, and Morocco have large phosphate reserves and a correspondingly large production because of easy mining and a ready European market, which was developed during the war. An increase in home consumption is destined to develop for the eastern American fields, and the countries of the Pacific will provide a market for the western producers. New processes indicate a decrease in fertilizer costs, which will encourage a more widespread domestic use and assure better marketing conditions. The African deposits, although benefited by a water haul, have the disadvantage of being isolated from a source of acid so that the crude rock is shipped from Africa to its destination, whereas in the United States the chief product shipped is acidulated rock or various types of superphosphatic fertilizers. The principal types of phosphate deposits used in the manufacture of fertilizers are guanos, apatite, phosphatic marl, phosphatic limestone, phosphatic shale, and phosphate rock which is also known as phosphorite. Some of these deposits are found on each of the continents; Table 1 gives their occurrence, age, location, character, extent, etc. Most of , the information found in this table represents a compilation of information published elsewhere in a different form and widely scattered.

In 2007 Copper Mountain Mining determined that there were sufficient resources to consider reopening the Similco Mine near Princeton, BC. The mill facility that had been built by Newmont Mining in 1972 was closed in 1996 and all of the process equipment removed. The mill had been built on the west side of the Similkameen River to facilitate mining of the Ingerbelle Deposit. In 1980 construction was completed on a primary crusher and cable belt to deliver ore across the Similkameen River from the Copper Mountain deposit to the Ingerbelle mill. With the decision to restart mining of the Copper Mountain deposit, the decision was made to design and build a 35,000 tpd grinding and flotation mill near the mining operations. This paper discusses the application of historical operating data for the selection of the mills for the new grinding circuit and provides an overview of the grinding circuit design.

Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life. Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which includes the requirement that a Competent Person prepare and approve publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organisations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organisations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarised in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of an International Code are outlined.

This paper presents a case history involving the installation of drilled in piles with rock sockets for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Path project located west of the Henry Hudson Parkway within the Riverside Park between 83rd Street and 91st Street at the Hudson River in New York, NY. The paper specifically addresses access and construction procedures for a marine installation when working in an urban and environmentally sensitive setting.

The Bureau of Mines carbonized 35 coal samples from Logan and Mingo Counties) W. Va., at 900° C using the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association method, and determined yields of products and physical properties of cokes. Twenty samples represented the No.5 Block, Stockton, Chilton, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, No. 2 Gas, and Eagle beds in Logan County, and 15 samples represented the Coalburg, Buffalo Creek, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, and No.2 Gas beds in Mingo County, W. Va, Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. All coals in both counties rank as high-volatile A bituminous. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coals. Coals with accept-able ash and sulfur contents can be used as major constituents in coking blends with higher rank coal to yield coke with satisfactory properties for blast furnace use.

This research project had two main objectives: (1) To identify the smoke limits of gaseous fuel-air mixtures and (2) to obtain and evaluate basic chemical information on the formation of smoke in very rich flames near the smoke limit. Such information would do much to establish the circumstances for car-bon deposition in gas appliances and in other types of combustors. Based on tests with ethylene and propane, these studies showed the following: 1. Smoke limits are related to the yellow-tip limits of the fuel. Previous research established sufficient data to permit prediction of yellow-tip limits on gas burners using a wide variety of fuels. The present study of smoke limits deals only with ethylene-air flames, but the concept that was developed is probably applicable to other fuels.

"The Langmuir model has been widely used for the coal-methane sorption process via an isothermal test. However, even though the temperature-dependent Langmuir model were recognized theoretically and experimentally, the quantitative relationship between the Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature have not been clarified and confirmed by lab test data. This paper collects 158 methane-coal sorption data under different temperatures, which apply the Langmuir model to consider the relationship between Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature (see APPENDIX I). Even though the Langmuir model cannot be used to show the physical state of methane adsorption on coal, it is widely used because of its simplicity and the reasonable explanation of its parameters (a & b). The results from these published isothermal tests confirm that 1) there is no consistent relationship between Langmuir’s constant-a and temperature; 2) the Langmuir model is a temperature-dependent model, and the temperature-dependent feature is mainly shown by the relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature; 3) The relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature can be described by both the exponential and linear relationship with dried coal. This paper provides a database for temperature-dependent Langmuir’s model, which can be used for reservoir simulation of coalbed methane reservoir, coal seam degasification modeling for underground coal mines considering the heating effect induced by geotherm and heat injection (via hot water, hot steam, ultrasonic, etc.). INTRODUCTION The isothermal test for gas sorption on coal is one of the fundamental tests in Coalbed Methane (CBM) recovery fields, such as underground coal mine methane degasification, CBM gas-in-place estimation, and carbon dioxide sequestration in un-minable coal seams. Generally, two methods, volumetric and gravimetric, are employed to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012). Based on these two approaches, a series of commercial and self-assembled instruments are built and several calculation methods are used to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012, Gasparik, K., 2014; Goodman, A. L., et al, 2004; Zhang, L., et al, 2013). In the post-processing stage, many models are provided to analyze isothermal data in order to understand the storage mechanism of gas in coal. Common models include the Langmuir model (and its extended forms), the pore-filling model, multilayer adsorption model (BET), and the Gibbs’ model. To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m, while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m. The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined. From both economic and environmental aspects, the loss of organic materials from a solvent extraction process is of major concern. A decade ago perhaps the only consideration given to solvent loss was economic in nature. Today, the environmental -.and hygiene - impacts have to be seriously considered. Massive sulfides discovered in 1991 and further explored in 1993 in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, north of Papua New Guinea, represent one of the few modem seafloor occurrences known to he associated solely with highly siliceous volcanic rocks. As such they are very close analogs of ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) ore deposits, and hence an excellent natural laboratory for developing new approaches for land-based VMS exploration. The Manus Basin lies between the active New Britain subduction zone and volcanic arc to its south and the opposed inactive Manus subduction trench to its north. It is being extended in a complex pattern of short neovolcanic zones and oblique transform faults. In its western sector, relatively mature back-arc spreading has created predominantly basaltic segments with characteristics and mineralization generally similar to those of mid- ocean ridges. At its far east, however, the basin is distinctly immature. The East Manus Volcanic Zone lies between two members of the Manus transform set, and is an en-echelon series of neovolcanic edifices constructed on extensionally thinned island arc crust formed during the earlier manus subduction episode. Individual edifices range from predominantly basaltic to predominantly dacitic in composition. Two of the edifices are known to be hydrothermally active, and a particulate plume with unknown source occurs in the seawater column above a third.

Rates of return realized on investments in the gold mines of the newer goldfields outside the Witwatersrand were calculated and analysed over various time intervals and on various bases. It is shown that these rates of return are strongly correlated with changes in the gold price and cannot be equated with the returns that are expected when investments are made, and that the changes in gold price also affect the rates of return on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a whole. These correlations are used, together with a limited application of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, to suggest the expected levels of threshold returns in real terms for new mining projects, for projects on existing mines, and for share valuations.

The author was the banquet speaker at the 48th Annual MPD meeting, sponsored by the SME Colorado Minerals Processing Section, May 14-16, 1998, in Colorado Springs, CO. Here are his remarks. It has been an exciting experience to have spent 34 years involved with the process of generating patented technology eventually leading to commercialization. In today's terminology, this process is called technology transfer. I have had the unusual experience of being involved doing basic research as an inventor while also being responsible for managing new product development and commercialization. In addition, I worked for 31 years before my retirement for a large research-oriented company, The Dow Chemical Co. In 1995, the company spent more than $1 billion dollars on research and development. The last three years of my career have been spent working with a research-oriented university, The University of Florida. And I have worked as a consultant helping several companies to optimize their products and processes. It is on this cumulative experience base that the preparation of this article is based.
