INTRODUCTION Under certain geological and mining conditions mining near the surface results in an intensive destruction of the overlying rock strata. If the system of mine openings remains filled with air after having completed all mining activities because the flooding of the mines depending on the morphology of the mining area does not exceed a certain level, this circumstance might result in dangers for the public. This is particularly true where uncontrollable air- ways occur within the destroyed rock or if former uranium mining areas are concerned. In these areas radon emanation resulting in undue radon concentration should be taken into account. This circumstance can be counteracted by suitable measures of ventilation. In the following the example of a uranium deposit in the Erzgebirge Mountains (Saxon Ore Mountains) is used to illustrate how statements about the ground flow through overlying rock can be made on the basis of systematic investigations. Finally comparisons with experience gained in coal mining yield orientation data which are used as input quantities in ventilation network calculations and in project preparation of mine fans. Last not least it is proved that endangering the population by radon can be excluded by installing an appropriate fan. INITIAL SITUATION From 1946 to 1989 the uranium deposit of Schlemal-Alberode was mined starting from superficial zones down to depths of 1,800 m. The total output amounted to 80,000 t of uranium, i.e. Schlemal Alberode is one of the largest uranium deposits in the world. The mine openings comprise a cavity of 40 million m3. Al- though thin seams (0.2 to 0.3 m) and steep to semi-steep veins (60 - 70 degrees on average) were extracted using the method of overhand cut-and-fill there were also deposit sections with larger thicknesses and poor ore zones, respectively, where especially after the war until about 1955 large openings were formed due to missing filling. Due to this uncontrolled, relatively "wild" mining considerable subsidence of the surface and fractures in the border zone of the subsidence area occurred. The town of Oberschlema was destroyed and an area of 0.14 km2 was damaged by mining involving a maximum subsidence of 6 m in the centre - called deformation area. The rehabilitation work for the deposit area of Schlemal Alberode involves the flooding of the openings up to a level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle as long-term preventive measure. Fig. 1 shows the flooding level of October 1996. The level of the -540 m drift will probably be reached in June 1997. From that point of time a general rearrangement of the ventilation has to be made because the central return air ventilation via shaft 373 will no longer be possible. This shaft has no connection with the superficia1 system of mine openings. A new return air ventilation system based on shaft 382 as return air shaft will be designed (Fig. 1). The capacity of the future mine fan system will e.g. be determined by the flow conditions in the deformation area mentioned above. For this reason investigations were carried out in a test drift 13a on the level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle in the stretching zone of the subsidence trough for several days (Fig. 2 and 3). INFLUENCE OF THE OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE MAIN MINE FAN ON THE RADIATION SITUATION ON SURFACE The beginning of flooding in 1991 was also the beginning of the investigations into the options of future ventilation due to the reduction of the mining area. The first analyses of radon emanation made in May 1991 showed that only about 20 % of the total radon emanation result from systematically ventilated mine workings. This means that despite of existing dams the air streams through the majority of mine openings of the deposit. The analysis of the individual radon inflows illustrates the special problematic nature of the deposit involving all possible effects on the surface. The shutdown of the main mine fan over the long period between 2.10. and 6.10.1991 showed the essential influence of the operating conditions of the fans on the whole radiation situation on surface. Fig. 4 shows the comparison of the radon concentration level and its daughters during a 'normal" weekend with the level during long-term shutdown in the old 'Casino" of the papermill of Niederschlema. This papermill as well as the 'Casino" are situated in the outcropping zone of the deposit section of Niederschlema. The -60 m level was driven as the upper level in this area, from which the panels were driven to about 20 m below the surface. Also below the "Casino" there is such a panel in the vein 'Glirck", whose roof is directly situated below the building in a depth of 39 m. Directly next to it there is the raise 2 of the panel 'Namenlos" in a depth of 27 m. The graphics clearly shows the immediate increase in radon concentration as well as in the daughter concentration after the shutdown of the fans. The elimination of the artificially generated negative pressure results in the reversal of the convection direction due to the natural ventilating pressure. The interface structure allows the mine airto pass through aero- dynamic connections to the surface. Neglecting the meteorological parameters the concentrations of radon and its daughters in- creased by about 350 % as compared to a 'normal" weekend during longterm shutdown (i.e. in 4 days). Furthermore it could be noticed that a stationary state between the radon and its daughters has not been established in the period

New Gold Inc. had commissioned Orica to assist with the design of the drawbell blasting at New Afton Underground copper/gold block cave at Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Orica have had much success in developing the single-shot drawbell method at Freeport Indonesia in 2001 in the Deep Ore Zone and they will be using it exclusively in their new Grasberg Underground Operation. RioTinto Northparkes have also used the single shot drawbell blasting in their Second Lift E26 Project and even in the E48 orebody which is a post undercut block cave, realising the safety and operational benefits of this blasting method.

Success in implementing new technology for metallurgical processes is not a foregone conclusion: This paper includes a survey of 23 new technology-based metallurgical plant start-ups, in which the authors have identified 7 successes, 9 difficult start-ups, and 7 failures. Success is defined not only as meeting the schedule and budget to the end of mechanical completion; the key goal is a fast ramp up to the full design production level, with minimum plant and equipment modifications required after start-up. This paper sets out the key factors that underlie achievement of a quick production ramp up curve, as determined from the authors' project experiences and a quantitative analysis of over twenty metallurgical plant start-ups, both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical. Thorough test-work and pilot plants, plus appropriate scale-up to the full commercial plant, are key determinants of success in implementing new technology in metallurgical processes. Another critical factor is the number of new elements and their interactions. Project phasing is also particularly important for new technology projects, with appropriate review after each phase to develop a risk mitigation plan for the subsequent phase. New technology projects need committed champions to advance the project in the face of sceptics, but also require dispassionate and unbiased experts to ask the hard questions. As a project evolves, it is important to periodically question the appropriateness of assumptions, as well as to re-assess the relevance and completeness of data from test-work I pilot plants I industrial analogues. Sufficient human and financial resources are required to complete the often arduous implementation phase. During the ramp-up period, the operation generates little positive cash flow; however, significant expertise and capital are required for the de-bottlenecking projects that are often necessary to reach the plant's design output level.

"U. S. marketable phosphate rock production for the 2018 crop year (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018) showed an increase to 27.7 Mt (30.5 million st) from the 2017 crop year production of 27.1 Mt (29.8 million st), as reported to the U. S. Department of the Interior by the mining companies operating in the United States during crop year 2018 (Table 1). Domestic consumption decreased in the 2018 crop year to 23.9 Mt (26.3 million st), as compared to the 27.2 Mt (30 million st) consumed in crop year 2017. U.S. imports of phosphate rock increased to 3 Mt (3.3 million st) for the 2018 crop year from the 1.81 Mt (1.9 million st) for crop year 2017. Imports of phosphate rock were from Peru and Morocco. There was an increase of 2.85 Mt (3.1 million st) in producers’ stocks from 7.45 Mt (8.2 million st) in crop year 2017 to 10.3 Mt (11.3 million st) in crop year 2018 (Table I).For calendar year 2018, Florida and North Carolina phosphate rock production accounted for 75 percent of the total U.S. production, with the balance being produced in Idaho and Utah. The Florida and North Carolina percent of U.S. production is declining. U.S. production of 25.7 Mt (28.3 million st) in calendar year 2018 was produced by five companies at 10 mines in four states and accounted for approximately 9.6 percent of the world production of 267.7 Mt (295 million st) for calendar year 2018 (Table 2).In calendar year 2018, U.S. phosphate production decreased by 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st), while companies increased stocks of phosphate rock by 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st). The domestic production for calendar year 2018 of 25.7 Mt (28.3 million st) represents 78.4 percent of the domestic production capacity of 32.8 Mt (36.1 million st).At present, China reportedly produces more than 50 percent of the world’s phosphate rock. As a result of planned expansions, Morocco production has increased from 27 Mt (30 million st) in 2017 to 33 Mt/a (36 million stpy), which is approximately 12.3 percent of the world’s production, moving ahead of the U.S. production. In calendar year 2018, the U.S. phosphate rock production was 25.7 Mt (28.3 million st), which is less than 10 percent of the world’s production of phosphate rock (Fig. 1)."

In fact, thermal exploration has received relatively little attention in modern times compared to other potential field geophysical methods. There have evolved, however, two basic approaches to thermal exploration for subsurface heat sources. These are 1) the measurement of surface temperatures by infrared, thermal imagery and 2) the measurement of geothermal gradients in exploratory drill holes.

THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not. Advancement to date in the United States in prevention and treat-ment has been slow, yet the record shows that quantitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and means for decreasing it were being developed as far back as 25 years ago; and that more rapid progress may be looked for from now on. It requires only information on the capacity of the mill to be designed, the product fineness and the Bond?s work index to give an accurate and simple prediction of Tower Mill characteristics. "Rare earth elements (REEs) are a kind of new materials which have excellent optical, electrical and magnetic properties, and they play an important role in the development of high technology and green energy industries. With abundant reserves and a wide range of REE type, rare earth industry has a rapid development in China in recent years. However, environmental issues associated with REE exploitation have severely restricted the sustainable development of rare earth industry in China. At present, literatures on the externalities of REE exploitation are very limited, especially in China. This paper builds an evaluation model based on life cycle evaluation to estimate the external costs of REE exploitation at Bayan Obo. The results show that the external costs for producing one metric tonne of rare earth oxides (REO) in Bayan Obo was CNY 34739 in 2013, the external costs of waste gas, waste water, radioactive substance, REE resource depletion, and land occupation are CNY 14945, 12515, 1400, 3199, and 2680, respectively. Waste gas and water constitute about 79% of the total external costs. The internalization of the external costs would reduce the financial profit of Northern Rare Earth (Group) by 18%. This study has taken into account only those externalities whose market values can be estimated, and therefore the external costs of REE exploitation in Bayan Obo is likely to be underestimated. The results fill the gap in literature and provide further understanding on the external cost of REE exploitation.Introduction / Background Along with increasing concern about environmental pollution problems caused by the usage of fossil fuel and the shortage of fossil energy, a transition has occurred where development has moved toward green and renewable energy sources with less pollutant emissions (Stegen 2015). Rare earth elements (REE) are a group of important raw materials for these trends since they have unique magnetic, electronic and optical properties, and thus make them widely used in making high-performance magnets and energy saving lamps (U.S. DOE 2010). In addition, REE are crucial for manufacturing of widespread high-tech applications in medical, defense and electronic industries. Many countries have made medium-term and long-term plans for the development of their REE industries, and the annual growth rate of global REE demand is expected to increase by 6% by 2020, and reach about 170,000 metric tons of rare earth oxides (REO) by 2020 (Rollat et al 2016)."

The deformation characteristics of pearlite have been studied by light and electron microscopy.1,2 In the electron-microscopic work, deformation was found to take place by 1) ferrite slip which is parallel to the lamellae, 2) slip transverse to the lamellae with both cementite and ferrite deforming, and 3) ferrite-cementite interfacial slip. The transverse slip gives a step-like appearance to the lamellae in light microscopic work. It was thought that spheroidization of deformed pearlite would commence at the regions of maximum cementite deformation, the "stepped" areas. Although there is no possibility for seeing slip in the microstructure if the specimen is polished after deformation, the step-like appearance of the lamellae clearly indicates the transverse deformation. Thus, the areas of cementite deformation are apparent after polishing and the effect of deformed areas on spheroidization may be studied by the usual metallographic techniques. This note reports the result of a metallographic investigation which substantiates that spheroidization begins in the "stepped" areas. An AISI 1080 steel was normalized, re-austeni-tized at 1040°C, and isothermally transformed at 700 ± 4°C for 4 hr. Cubes, 5 mm to a side, were compressed between parallel plates to strains of 20, 40, and 50 pct. After deformation, specimens were heated to 600, 650, and 700°C; withdrawn at increasing time intervals and examined metallo-graphically for the percentage and distribution of spheroidite. The percentage of spheroidite was determined by lineal analysis. A micro structural region considered as spheroidized was one in which a lamellar skeleton was not distinguishable. Table I gives the times necessary for 95 pct spheroidization for each condition of strain and annealing temperature. "Standard rock dust for use in the rock dusting of coal mines might be defined tentatively as powdered mineral, light colored and free of carbonaceous matter and free silica, all of which will pass a 20-mesh screen while 50% of it will pass-through a 200-mesh screen.Such dust may be prepared from limestone, gypsum, anhydrite, or shale free of sand and flint. For the initial rock dusting of the average nongaseous bituminous mines enough standard rock dust should be applied so that the combustible content of the resulting mixture of rook dust with mine dust shall not exceed 45%, a range somewhere between 35% end 45% being the practical objective sought.All entries, slopes or passageways and room necks should be rock dusted.Additional safeguards are:a.,Rockdusting roomsb.,Scattering of dust in vicinity of shots before firing.c.,Placing of barriers in the mouths of panels, cross-entries and other key positions.Redusting becomes necessary whenever the combustible content of the mine dust exceeds the permissible maximum. A slurry of fine coal and water will be fed into the line and moved through it under pressure. * Sulphur resources in the U.S. are being rapidly exhausted with no new major deposits being found, This common mineral may become one of the most strategic items during the next five years. Recovery of sulphur from pyrites is being considered in case of an emergency. Already the British have adopted stringent measures to conserve sulphur supplies.

Molten salts have been used for the extraction of metals since the 19th century but, recently, many interesting processes have been investigated using mixtures of molten salts and different cathodic materials. In several existing processes, the cation is simply discharged from melt but, in some cases, complications arise when the electrode potentials of the cations are relatively close. For example, the co-deposition of sodium with aluminium in the Hall-Heroult process is discussed in terms of electrode potentials of the components in the molten electrolyte. Similar considerations will also be given to the anodic reactions with respect to chlorine, oxygen, carbon dioxide or monoxide evolution from chloride-oxide melts. In some cases, the cathodic product interacts with the cathode to produce new and exciting products such as nanotubes from carbon or titanates and reduced titanium oxides from titanium dioxide. Depending on the electrode potentials, it is also possible to completely change the cathodic reaction from discharge of the cation in the salt to ionisation of the anions in the cathode. Examples are given of the reduction of metal oxides to produce metals, high technology alloys and nanomaterials and the cathodic refining of liquid metals.

Within the last few years, there have been numerous techno-logical advancements within material handling due, in part, to the introduction of conveying systems and mobile material handling systems to the industry. Although the traditional material handling methods are still commonly used, the introduction of conveyors to the industry has provided companies with some very efficient and economical options. These "new" systems change with the industry to accommodate rigorous demands, ease of operation, and low operating cost requirements. The number of mobile material handling systems utilized in mining operations is increasing, especially in heap leaching applications. Ten years ago, mobile material handling systems like Mobile Stacking Conveyors (MSC) were considered a novelty. There were two (2) MSC's in actual operation and only one of those in a heap leaching application. Today there are numerous proven systems operating at mine sites around the world-La Coipa, Zaldivar, Florida Canyon, Cananea, El Abra, Chuquicamata, and Radomiro Tomic. The popularity of mobile systems is due to the benefits realized by individual projects. As technology advances, so do the concepts behind mobile material handling systems. Implementing self leveling mechanisms, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Global Positioning Systems to control the equipment are just a few of the recent advances that will be discussed in this paper. We will also discuss current proven systems, and touch on what we see as some of the future advances.

The capabilities of the analog computer, the Mine Ventilation Simulator, installed at WHA's Safety and Health Technology Center in Denver, Colorado, are discussed. General opera- ting procedures are described showing how a mine model is produced, and how the model can subsequently be modified to produce a solution to a mine ventilation problem. A sample problem is included to illustrate the technique. The important role the Mine Ventilation Simulator plays in ventilation training is discussed, including experiences with the education of students at the Colorado School of Mines. This paper includes a summary of some of the advantages and disadvantages of the analog technique and suggests some design criteria for application to future development of analog computers, based on experience gained with the Mine Ventilation Simulator.

The ever changing conditions in the coal-mining industry and the increasing competition of other fuels such as oil, natural gas, wood refuse, etc., have made it imperative that the coal operator be in a position to supply a constantly uniform and clean product. The old idea of putting on the market "anything so long as it's black" no longer holds good. Today's users of fuel have to consider the amount of heat per dollar they obtain from the fuel they buy. Burning of coal has become largely mechanical, at least so far as industrial coal is concerned, and industrial coal is the kind the bituminous operator is for the most part called upon to supply. When we get into things mechanical, the matter of precision has a mighty bearing on efficiency. Precision in coal means standardization of quality, or uniformity of preparation in size and also in ash and moisture content. The trend of coal mining is ever towards more and more mechanization. Mechanization means coal-cutting machinery, loading machinery, conveying machinery, etc. Although such methods cut the cost, the cleanliness of coal so mined and loaded is not controllable to the same extent as when each operation is by hand labour. The operator has therefore the problem of mining his coal as cheaply as possible, but at the same time preparing a product which will to the utmost satisfy his customer. The answer is a mechanical cleaning plant. Before installing a cleaning plant, however, the operator must take into consideration the cleansability of the coal from his particular mine. This is accomplished by taking representative samples of the seam or seams to be treated, and subjecting these to screen tests, followed by float and sink tests on each size product. From these tests, it can be readily found to what degree of cleanliness the several sizes can be prepared advantageously, and also what will be the percentage recovery of cleaned coal. The accompanying tables give the results of representative tests on Michel coals of minus-2-inch size. All coal over 2-inc.h was intended to be hand cleaned. The coal-cleaning plants in general use at the present time come under two broad classifications, namely, wet and dry.

The influence which Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu have, both individually and collectively, on the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid lead at 600"C zuas studied by circulating a H2S-Hz gas wlixture over a specific lead alloy until equilibrium was attained. Subsequently, the H2S concentration in the equilibrium gas mixture and sulfur concentration in the condensed phase were deterruined. The elements gold, silver, and antinzony (above 8 at. pct) increased the activity coefficient of sulfur. Bismuth had no apparent effect. Tin (above 3 at. pct) and copper decreased the coefficient. The influence of an individual element, i, on sulfur is best reported as the interaction parameter, riS, which is defined as The values o these first-order interaction zus are: ESzu = —55.0. These interaction parameters are used to predict the activity coefficient of sulfur in six fouv-component alloys and one seven-component alloy. Comparisons are made with direct experimental determinations. INTERACTIONS in dilute solution have been studied by many investigators. Most of the experimental work has been confined to solute-solvent interactions in simple binary systems and solute-solute interactions in ternary systems. Dealy and pehlke"~ have summarized the available literature on activity coefficients at infinite dilution in nonferrous binary alloys and have calculated from published data the values for interaction parameters in dilute nonferrous alloys. Interaction parameters are a convenient means of summarizing the effect of one solute species on another in a given solvent. Only a few investigators have studied interactions of the nonmetallic element sulfur in a metallic solvent. They are as follows: Rosenqvist,~ sulfur in silver; Rosenqvist and Cox,4 sulfur in steel; chipman, sulfur in alloy steels; Alcock and Richardson,% ulfur in copper alloys; Cheng and Alcock,' sulfur in iron, cobalt, and nickel; Cheng and ~lcock,' sulfur in lead and tin. The only reported work on the Pb-S system in the dilute-solution region is that of Cheng and Alcock.' Their investigation involved a study of the solubility of sulfur in liquid lead over the temperature range 500" to 680°C. The results may be summarized by the following relationship: S (dissolved in lead) + Pb(1) = PbS(s) log at. %S = -3388/T + 3.511 Experimentally, it was found that Henry's law was valid up to the solubility limit of sulfur in lead, i.e., at 600°C up to 0.43 pct. Their investigation did not include the study of sulfur in lead alloys. More accurate calculations could be made in smelting and refining systems if activity coefficients of solute species could be accurately predicted in complex solutions. One of the objectives of this study was to compare the experimental data with the values calculated from the equations derived from models for dilute solutions proposed by wagner9 and Alcock and Richardson. A temperature of 600°C was chosen as the experimental temperature to attain reasonable reaction rates and to minimize volatilization of the condensed phase. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The Pb, Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu used for preparation of the alloys were American Smelting and Refining Co. research-grade materials. All were 99.999+ pct purity except the antimony and tin which were 99.99+ pct. The initial alloys prepared for this study consisted of twenty-one binary alloys, eleven ternary alloys, and one six-component alloy. The constituent elements were mixed for each desired alloy and were placed in a crucible machined from spectrographically pure graphite. The crucible was placed in a vycor tube which was evacuated with a vacuum pump and gettered by titanium sponge at 800°C for 8 to 12 hr. After the gettering was completed, the chamber containing the titanium was sealed and removed. The remaining sample chamber was placed in a tube furnace at 800°C for 2 hr and quenched in cold water. The final operation consisted of homogenization of the alloy for 1 to 2 weeks at a temperature just below the solidus for the individual system. The resulting master alloys were sectioned into small pieces and a random choice made for individual equilibrations. Cobalt sulfide (Cogs8) used to control the gas atmosphere in the circulation system was prepared by passing dried HzS for 24 hr over a Co-S mixture heated to 700°C in a tube furnace. This material was then mixed with cobalt metal to give a two-phase mixture which, when heated in hydrogen to a particular temperature, produced a desired H2S/H2 gas atmosphere in the circulation system. "In order to define the ore/waste boundaries as finely as possible, mine planners often insist on kriging very small blocks (relative to the spacing of the available sample grades). These kriged estimates for very small blocks are over-smoothed. For several simple sampling patterns the relation between the block size and the variogram range, and the kriging results were studied. Meaningful estimates of individual blocks are obtained when the variogram range is large compared to the block size and the sample spacing. For a variogram range less than half the sample spacing, the kriged block estimates were found to be uncorrelated with the actual grades. The over-smoothed estimates should not be used for calculating recoverable reserves IntroductionNowadays most mining companies know that the geostatistical estimation method, kriging, gives the best estimates of individual block grades. As most mining engineers and geologists are now familiar with the basics of geostatistics, the definitions of the variogram and of kriging will not be repeated here. An appendix containing definitions and mathematical formulae is given at the end of the article for the sake of completeness.Even though it is well known that the kriged estimates for very small blocks are over-smoothed, mine planners who want to define the ore/waste limits as finely as possible (especially for selective underground mines), are often tempted to krige very small blocks. So we ask how small is ""too small""? Clearly ""smallness"" cannot be expressed in yards or metres. It depends on the nature of the orebody under study and this is reflected in the variogram model chosen to describe it.To answer this question, the changes in four key parameters are studied:• the kriging variance,• the variance of the estimated grade,• the slope of the linear regression of the true but unknown grade on its estimated value, and• the coefficient of correlation between the actual grade and the estimate;as a function of the block size and the variogram range. (Definitions of these four parameters are given in the appendix). Ideally the kriging variance should be low while the variance of the estimated grade should be equal to the dispersion variance of the blocks. The slope should be l.0, and so should the correlation coefficient.These four parameters have been calculated for several simple 2-D examples. The effect of using kriged block estimates that are too heavily smoothed are shown, and the dangers of trying to use these estimates for predicting recoverable reserves for small blocks (i.e. selective mining units) are pointed out."
