"The Keystone porphyry molybdenum deposit, located in southcentral British Columbia, is hosted by intrusive rocks of the Cretaceous Mount Lytton batholith and the early Tertiary Keystone quartz diorite stock. The molybdenite mineralization is associated with rhyolite porphyry dikes flanking a large 1300 m by 2100 m breccia complex. Recognition of the potential for the buried molybdenum porphyry system was based on quartz-molybdenite vein fragments within the hydrothermal breccias.The full extent of the molybdenum mineralization is not known. The few deep drill holes along one comer of the breccia complex defines strong metal zoning of molybdenum and associated elements of F, Mn, Zn, Pb, Au, Ag, Fe and W about the molybdenum stockwork mineralization that may be useful for guiding additional exploration. The best mineralization occurred near the base of the deepest drill hole with 0.114% Mo in rhyolite porphyry near the edge of the breccia pipe at a depth of 1350 m.The exploration history of the deposit has been complex, focussing on both porphyry-style mineralization and precious metal veins and stockworks on the periphery of the porphyry system. Exploration to date has defined an attractive porphyry molybdenum system with uneconomic grades at great depth; however, there remains significant potential to define economic mineralization elsewhere in the Keystone porphyry system and adjoining occu""ences."

Sequential Net Acid Generation (NAG) accelerated oxidation testing using peroxide was carried out on single sulfide mineral samples. The calculation of the nett acid production potential (NAPP) assumes that all the sulfide is present as pyrite and that dissolution results in a 2:1 ratio of H+:SO42-. NAPP as kg H2SO4/t is calculated as 30.6 x wt.% S present. To test whether this calculation is valid a NAPP* value was defined in which instead of using the wt.% S present for the calculation the wt.% S dissolved is used. Stoichiometric analysis of the dissolution products of the sulfide minerals as they would occur at pH 7 indicates, that in all cases, the ratio of H+:SO42- of 2:1 is viable. The NAG to pH 7 and NAPP* closely coincided for pyrite, bornite, chalcocite and covellite. For the three Cu-containing minerals, the NAG to pH 4.5 value was 0 as is predicted on the basis of the speciation likely to be present at pH 4.5. Acid generation is due to hydroxylation of the dissolved Cu between pH 4.5 and 7.0. The NAG to pH 7 and NAPP* values for chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite were in reasonable agreement but were not for either sphalerite or galena. Zn is not completely hydroxylated at pH 7 as is assumed by the calculation. For galena, surface analysis identified polysulfide formation on of the leach residue polysulfide. The formation of polysulfide is an acid consuming reaction. Therefore under conditions of accelerated oxidation the NAPP value is a reasonable estimate of the possible acid production in all cases except for sphalerite and galena. However, under conditions of less intense oxidation, for instance in columns, waste rock and tailings dumps, the formation of polysulfides is likely to be more widespread thus reducing the correlation between NAPP and the maximum possible acid production.

"INTRODUCTION Longwall coal mining leaves large areas where the coal has been made removed and the roof rock strata collapse, forming a zone of broken rock rubble called the gob. Figure 1 shows a typical longwall gob area along with the gate roads. The ventilation pattern for progressively sealed longwall panels follows a simple “U” pattern where fresh air is coursed inby to the headgate, flows along the face and exhausts through the outby tailgate as shown in figure 1(a). An important variation of this pattern is the back return (BR) arrangement where the exhaust air from the face is drawn inby and around the nearest open cross cut before it turns in the outby direction towards the exhaust fan. Figure 1(b) illustrates the use of back return. This arrangement moves the point of low pressure from the tailgate corner up to 60 m inby and thus maintains fresh air in the tailgate region that could otherwise be contaminated with gob air.The gob area may contain remnants of unmined coal or parts of overlying coal beds that continue to release methane, eventually filling the gob area with methane in concentrations far above the explosive range of about 4.5 to 15%. Many gob areas must be equipped with gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs) to extract methane, and GVBs often exhaust methane at concentrations from 50% to 90% (Saki, 2016). Due to oxidation processes occurring in the gob, the oxygen content is reduced to a low level, with nitrogen and CO2 making up the major remaining components of the gob atmosphere. FORMATION OF EXPLOSIVE GAS ZONES IN GOBS Since the longwall face area is ventilated with fresh air below 1% methane and the face and gob areas are not separated, an explosive fringe will form where the methane content lies within the explosive range and oxygen content remains above 12%. Figure 2 shows a typical development of such an EGZ. This figure is based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model developed by CSM researchers to analyze gas concentrations and flow patterns in longwall mining. Figure 2(a) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob with a U type ventilation scheme, where EGZ lies right behind the shields in the tailgate corner. Figure 2(b) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob combining U type ventilation scheme with BR, where EGZ is pushed away from the face deep into the gob. The CFD modeling parameters and boundary conditions have been verified with field data from two cooperating, active longwall mines (see Worrall 2012, Marts 2015, Gilmore 2015 and Saki 2016). Other mine geometries, methane inflow rates and gob permeability distributions can be modeled to establish representative gob atmospheric conditions. Two GVBs were operating in the model, extracting 0.165 m3/sec each. The methane in the working areas and returns was kept below 1%. Methane flowing into the model from a rider coal bed above the mined seam was at the rate of 0.55 m3/sec."

Air is fundamental to flotation; not only is it required to collect the valuable particles, but it also controls the froth stability and consequently the separation performance for a given feed. Froth stability can be described and quantified in numerous ways, which are subtly different. Air recovery is one such measure of froth stability which accounts for both the stability of the bubbles and the mobility of the froth. The benefit of using air recovery as a measure of froth stability is that it exhibits a peak as air flow rate is increased, and this corresponds to the air rate at which the optimal separation performance is obtained. As such, it provides a single target value for optimising air flowrate for a given set of feed conditions. Use of air recovery, however, has one potential drawback: accurate measurement of the inlet air flow rate to a flotation cell is required. This can be problematic for operations, particularly where calibration of air flow rate is carried out infrequently or where there is no air flow rate measurement, such as for many self-aerated flotation cells. To this end, we present an alternative method for determining the peak in air recovery (PAR) air rate.We introduce a simplified method for determining the PAR air rate using trends in froth velocity and overflowing froth height, both of which are readily measured using existing froth image analysis systems. We will show, using industrial data, the application of this simple technique to find the optimal air flowrate for flotation cells. In this paper, based on the Theological tests of the interface between clay and concrete, an interface Theological model is proposed and is used in the finite element analysis which takes soil as viscoelastic mass and Theological effect of the interface between diaphram wall and ground into consideration. Its results are compared with those without an interface element, without considering the relative creep displacement. Close attention is paid to the variation of wall with time under the condition of various interface shear stiffness and viscous sliding coefficient, and their effects on the wall bending moment are primarily verified in the paper. The change of wall bending moment with time, trench heave and wall displacement in different excavation depth, bracing position, parameters for soil are also studied.

In selecting mobile mining equipment, factors including availability, useful economic life, maintenance and operating costs, and spare parts availability are considered. Given these factors, trucks and shovels with different capacities are selected. Optimizing equipment for pit and hillside quarry cases, where 8% and 10% ramps are commonly in use, were examined; the effect of other mining activities such as drilling and blasting on unit cost were considered. In principle, 20 m to 25 m high benches should be economical for downhill haulage, and 7 m to 10 m low benches economical for uphill haulage. However, practice of both mining styles favours 10 m to 15 m bench heights. Hence, the analysis here was carried out with the field experience bench height range. In the study, a truck-shovel optimization was based on the movement of 5 to 20 million cubic metres (in 2.5 million cubic metre increments) of overburden stripping at the Eynez open pit mine in the Soma region of Turkey. The outcome showed that low-capacity shovels were unfavourable due to high production expectations. High-capacity shovels were also unfavourable due to health and safety issues causing high instances of impact vibration on trucks during the loading cycle and a decrease in foreseeable unit lifetimes. The number of shovel passes required to load a truck ranged from three to six. Trucks with high-capacity bodies were deemed uneconomical due to high investment and operating costs.

THE mining district of São Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Mineração de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in Sao Fidelis-the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. MINERALIZATION AND ORES The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60° and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Macabú), the São Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and São Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in São Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydrothermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. In this study, for the first time, to confirm the effect of bacterial growth phase on the malachite flotation were investigated in a well-controlled Hallimond tube system. The test results showed that the bacteria in the stationary phase exhibit two-fold greater floatability than those in mid-exponential phase. To understand the observed flotation behavior, complementary cell characterization tests and cell attachment tests were conducted. Interestingly, the bacteria at both phases exhibited similar surface properties as well as almost identical amount of cells attached onto the malachite, suggesting that the growth phasedependent flotation behavior cannot be attributed to the variation of cell surface properties and the extent of cell adsorption. On the other hand, cell detachment tests revealed that the amount of cells detached from the malachite surface is greater for the mid-exponential phase than the stationary phase due to the higher fluid drag applied to the cells at the mid-exponential phase, which was explained by the differences in the size and shape of attached bacteria onto the malachite surface. These morphological characteristics were found to cause the bacteria of mid-exponential phase to be separated highly sensitive and easy from malachite surface due to the fluid flow. Second, scale-up selective bioflotation tests were carried out in a 1 L Denver cell in malachite–silica binary mixture systems. Through the tests, we optimized the cell concentration and the malachite fraction in the feed. Overall, high malachite selectively was observed under optimized conditions (both recovery and grade showed more than 90%). The trend was in agreement with classical DLVO interaction energy profiles, which show the relative magnitudes of the adhesive forces between the mineral and the attached cell under equal hydrodynamic conditions.

"Automatic driving at high speed of an underground truck was tested at Brunswick mine in September 1995. Modifications to the truck included: a remote interface to control actuators, front and back video cameras to follow a roof mounted optical guide and proportional hydraulic controls on the steering.The mathematical model of the hydraulic system was adjusted using least square regression. The steering data, used in calculating the regression parameters, were acquired from the moving truck. The automatic steering control used three measured variables: lateral deviation, angular deviation and steering angle. Lateral deviations are obtained using the cameras, which are in continuous view of the guide, while steering angles are acquired from an extensiometer placed at the articulation point of the vehicle. Gain scheduling was used to compensate for vehicle speed and available hydraulic flow. Non-linear characteristics of the modeled hydraulic system were offset using open loop compensation.Speeds up to 23 km/h in forward direction and 13 km/h in reverse were achieved deviaduring continuous testing along one of the mine’s production drifts. Proportional steering was essential in achieving high speeds, as it enabled more precise positioning of the vehicle’s steering direction while reducing the abuses on cylinder and cylinder pins via diminished oscillations about the optical guide at high speeds."

Quite discrete zones in the soil with sharply contrasting metal value boundaries mark vestiges of bedrock mineralization, and such anomalous soil areas are often contiguous with partially weathered ore. It has not been possible on the basis of chemical criteria to distinguish between an anomaly formed from non-commercial mineralization and one formed from ore.

At the meeting of the Institute in Easton, October, 1873,I made a communication on the Ore Knob copper mine, in Ashe County, North Carolina (Transactions, vol. ii, p. 123), in which I called attention to the chemical decomposition alike of the pyritous lode and the inclosing gneiss rock to a depth of 60 feet, by which the feldspar of the latter had been converted into clay, and the whole rock very much softened. Such a decomposition is well known to be almost universal in the crystalline rocks of the Appalachians south of the Potomac; and if it is only seen in rare and exceptional cases farther to the northward, this, as I have elsewhere pointed out, is due to the fact that the decomposition began and ended in the ages anterior to the drift period, and that the decayed portions which still remained were at that time removed from the surface, except in some localities which were protected from the emding agency. I have lately had an opportunity of studying a remarkable instance of this kind in an examination made last month for the corporators of the Hoosac Tunnel.* The locality is at the western base of Hoosac Mountain, the western slope of which rises rapidly 1300 feet above the town of North Adams, in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, itself 700 feet above the sea level. Through this mountain, as is well known, a tunnel for the Troy and Boston Railroad has lately been opened, a distance of 25,081 feet from east to west. The rock of the mountain consists of mica schist and micaceous gneiss, including in its western half a great mass of harder feldspathic and quartzose strata in part a granitoid gneiss, the strata for the most part dipping to the eastward with variable angles, but with occasional western dips, apparently due to inversion. The crystalline strata of the mountain crest and sides are in many places exposed, and present rounded surfaces, often deeply grooved and striated, but with no appearance of decay. At the western base of the mountain, however, the gneissic rock is in a state of complete decomposition, which was well displayed in opening the tunnel, which, for a distance of several hundred feet, was driven through highly inclined strata so much decomposed that they were excavated with pick and shovel, and without the aid of blast-

Outcomes often do not meet the expectations of all the stakeholders of particular developments. This paper reviews typical management practises used by mining companies to undertake mining projects and improve their operations. A simple application of the House of Quality (HOQ) tool used in the Quality Functional Deployment (QFD) management approach is presented. It is shown that a QFDMMPtg approach could lead to innovation in mining processing plant development practice.

THE important developments within the past few years in electrochemistry, in particular in the electric furnace art, in electrometallurgy and in the methods of combatting corrosion are to be the subjects of my discussion. Fig.1 shows the rise of the electric steel furnace industry in this country and Canada. Many prophesied that the electric furnace was largely a war baby and that the sudden rise in the industry, due to the outbreak of the great war, would be fol-lowed by an equally sudden drop after the armistice. However, the curve shows that this, prophecy was not correct; the number of furnaces in operation in this country and Canada has continued to increase steadily, so that at the end of 1925 there were over 525 electric steel furnaces in successful operation. What does this mean? It has a big significance, namely that the en-tire steel industry has been revolutionized, to a certain extent, that we have been able to introduce certain alloys and steel products that we were unable to pro-duce before. On the table is. a sample of metallic chro-mium, analyzing more than 98 per cent chromium, made in the electric furnace. Before the war, the only commercial method of producing chromium was that by the Goldschmidt process. If chromium oxide is mixed with granulated aluminum, a violent reaction occurs, resulting in the production of metallic chro-mium. However, the price of chromium so made will always be above that of the raw material, which at the present time is about 27 cents a pound.. Furthermore, the chromium metal could only be turned out in small quantities, whereas in the electric furnace, large quan-tities, ton masses, can be produced today. The advent of chromium produced in the electric furnace has brought about an entire new phase in the alloy indus-try. The fuel-fired furnaces can turn out a low-carbon chromium steel that runs about 3 per cent chromium, whereas in the electric furnace, 60 per cent ferro-chromium is daily produced in large masses with almost entire elimination of carbon. It is difficult indeed to turn out ferrochrome very low in carbon. New steels are being produced today, for example the steel with which everyone has become familiar within the 'last few years, "stainless steel,". and which would have been impossible without the low-carbon ferrochrome. The elimination of most of the carbon made it possible to roll the chromium steels into thin sheets and manu-facture them into knife blades.

The treatment of concentrates for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials has been developed at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. Historically, conventional pyrometallurgical methods have been used for to recover values from refractory precious metal materials. However, enhanced environmental awareness has worked to constrain typical refractory material processing methods. This hinders and limits the ability of established smelting or roasting technologies to fill the needs of new sources of refractory materials. An alternative is to treat refractory precious metal bearing materials by hydro metallurgical techniques. These methods are considered more environmentally appropriate since they do not produce gaseous pollutants like sulfur dioxide. Industrially, Sunshine Mining and Refining Company employs hydrometallurgical technology to process refractory precious metal materials. The Sunshine antimony leach uses a mixture of sulfur and caustic under ambient pressure and boiling conditions. The Sunshine oxidation leach uses a mixture of sulfuric acid and a minimal amount of sodium nitrite under relatively mild oxygen pressure and temperature conditions. These conditions result in a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach. Since hydrometallurgical technologies provide industrially proven processing options for many types of refractory precious metal containing materials, their usage should be considered. Ample work has been conducted to prove the effectiveness of Sunshine refractory processing technologies on various materials. This has included platinum group metal materials, refractory gold concentrates, silver materials and indium materials. In some cases, complete process flowsheets have been designed to recover both base and precious metals from these materials and to treat the generated waste streams in environmentally sound manners.

In June 1996, Nord Resources Pacific (Nord) decided to work towards obtaining all necessary approvals from the government of PNG for a mine on Simberi Island in the Tabar Island Group, New Ireland Province. On the 9th of September 1996, Nord submitted a Proposal for Development and an application for a Mining Lease to mine the oxide gold deposits on Simberi Island. The Mining Lease was granted on the 3rd of December 1996 in a signing ceremony on Simberi Island. This was achieved in the extremely short time frame of less than 3 months and this paper attempts to explain the processes which made it possible.
