The granulation behavior of specularite fines which possess poor ballability was studied with limonite fines as a function of nuclei particles and adhering fines. The results show that the permeability of granules deteriorated as the ratio of specularite fines increased in the mixture, and the optimal granulation moisture content also decreased. The granulation kinetics results demonstrate that the adhering load of specularite fines increases rapidly within three minutes and then levels off. With increasing specularite fines ratio, the adhering speed is accelerated but the granulation duration needs to be longer to reach adhering balance. The microstructure of granule quasi-particles indicates that the fine limonite particles act as binders to bond together the specularite particles which are dispersed in the adhering layers. This can improve the adhering strength of the granules. The examination of relatively well behaved distributions subject to truncation by a cutoff grade in the mine clearly demonstrates that a bias is inevitably introduced when the selection is based on the results of samples which are subject to even the most idealised error distribution. The idealised error used in this paper is assumed to be normally distributed with a mean of zero and is thus unbiased. The bias introduced can be minimised but it cannot be eradicated. A better understanding of the bias can lead to improved procedures for mine sampling, sample preparation, assaying and estimation of selection units which will not only reduce the discrepancy but more significantly will increase the efficiency of mining selection and hence profitability.

This paper summarizes an investigation in which beneficiated ilmenite ore was smelted in a continuous, three-phase, 250 kv.a., open-top electric furnace. Minus %. inch ore was smelted, using the standard method. Fine ore, in the order of minus 14 mesh, was smelted in the briquetted form by the open bath method, and in the unagglomerated form by the cold dry-top method. The latter was shown to be superior. The data obtained .are discussed at some length. During the investigation, slag aver-aging 82.5 per cent Ti02 was produced over a period of 87 hours, the maximum being 85 per cent. Such slag should .be particularly attractive for the production of titanium tetrachloride, from which titaniurn metal is produced. The advantages of using paper-mill bark for producing a furnace charge of low bulk density, as required in cold dry-top smelting, were emphasized.

The rate of copper corrosion in liquid lead was studied as a function of flow rate and temperature in a closed isothermal loop system between 350" and 500°C. Kinetic data were interpreted with the Nernst-Brunner equation and the Chilton-Colbum mass transfer analogy to heat transfer. Over the range of temperatures and flow rates employed the solution rate constant varied from 2 x 10-3 to 20 x 10-3 cm per sec. The rate constant was found to vary with the 0.76 power of the Reynolds number in the range 7500 < Re < 40,000. The results of this investigation indicate that the Cu-Pb corrosion process is controlled largely by diffusion across a boundary layer. particularly at the higher temperatures. The effective boundary layer for diffusion is found to be approximately three to four times smaller than the momentum boundary layer. CORROSION by liquid metals has long been a problem during melting, static containment, and casting. Recently, considerable emphasis has been placed on the understanding of liquid metal corrosion mechanisms in an effort to prevent mass transfer and eventual failure in liquid metal heat exchangers and in liquid-metal-fueled nuclear reactors. The present investigation was conducted to determine the relationships which exist between corrosion kinetics and hydrodynamic conditions in an isothermal loop containing a simple liquid metal-solid metal corrosion system. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for its simplicity and ease in handling. Previous isothermal Cu-Pb corrosion studies1-3 have been conducted in both static and dynamic systems but not under conditions which allow easy "scale-up" to engineering systems, such as liquid metal heat exchangers. On the other hand, most liquid metal loops which have been used to evaluate mass transfer rates4 have been driven with temperature gradients under conditions of natural convection and unknown flow rates. The primary contributions of this research are twofold: 1) to evaluate the design of a simple isothermal loop corrosion system and 2) to investigate liquid metal corrosion behavior under well-defined hydrodynamic conditions. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK The apparatus used to measure the Cu-Pb corrosion rates is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The loop system consisted of 1) a reservoir made of Type 316 stainless steel containing a centrifugal pump and 2) stainless-steel tubing containing a removable copper test section. The copper test section was OFHC hard-drawn tubing, 11.0 0.05 cm in length and 0.775 ±0.005 cm ID. A Type 316 stainless-steel venturi meter* was inserted in place of the copper test sec- tion in order to determine the lead velocity as a function of pump speed at each temperature. The Cu-Pb system was chosen for this study because the solubility of copper in liquid lead is large enough to measure accurately but small enough that the diameter of the copper tubing was not changed significantly by corrosion. There are no intermediate phases formed in the system, and the solid solubility of lead in copper is vanishingly small so that back-diffusion cannot occur. Molten lead (corroding grade; 99.94+ pct Pb, 0.0015 max pct Cu) was charged from an auxiliary melting furnace into the system under an argon cover to minimize oxidation. The lead was then maintained at constant temperature by a stirred molten salt bath in which the loop was immersed to a depth just above the lead level in the reservoir, Fig. 1. The total volume of lead in the system was 320 2 cu cm.

THE unpredictable behavior of ground movement and subsidence has complicated the problems that attend the extraction of large quantities of ore. Special studies, particularly relating to coal mining, have yielded such a voluminous literature and so many involved controversial theories that a partial review would be difficult. Limited space makes any kind of a review impractical. The features to be considered cover only a relatively small part of the broad problems of ground movement and subsidence, but it is believed that this small part is critical. The practical aspects are important, since they bear directly on safety of mine workings, on recovery of ore and on dilution of ore in block caving and related systems for extracting large quantities of rock. The ground movement to be described occurs outside the vertical boundaries of a caved block in the area that is commonly referred to as being in the "zone of draw." "Draw" is a term that originated in the subsidence problems related to coal mining, and it is defined by a line drawn from the margin of the area caved underground to the most distant fracture at surface on the same side of the caved area as shown in Fig. I.1 " A line thus drawn is called the cave line, and its angle with respect to the horizontal is the cave angle or angle of draw. It is understood that the line is taken normal to the limit of mining, and in a vertical plane. The prevailing theories as to draw and angle of draw assume that appreciable movement occurred along the cave line, which has been described as a fracture resulting from the shearing action brought about by the weight of the overlying load. Fig. 2 shows diagrammatically the mechanics of ground movement adjacent to an area of subsidence according to the prevailing theory of draw (A, from Royce2) and, for comparison, ground movement observed in the Climax mine (B). The text in Peele&apos;s Handbook2 referring to Fig. 2 does not state the meaning of the "original position of top of workable ore" in the rectangular space above "ore in place," and the arrows are not explained. However, this presentation is most concerned with the zones outside the rectangle. According to the prevailing theory, as shown at the extreme left under A, Fig. 2, the vertical tension cracks at surface change at a shallow depth to shear fractures forming the cave line, and it is assumed that appreciable movement takes place along the cave line toward and into the subsiding caved block. The mechanics of ground movement observed in the Climax mine, as shown under B, Fig. 2, does not accord with the prevailing theory, particularly as regards the cave angle and draw. The vertical

Drilling activity in the South Texas area, which includes the South Corpus Christi and Laredo districts, showed a marked decline during 1941 from that of the preceding year. The rate of new discoveries, however, &apos;compared favorably with exploratory results of 1940 because of the many new productive sands opened in existing fields. South Texas completions for 1941 were about 12.3 per cent below the 1940 figure, compared with an increase of approximately 5.5 per cent in the total number of completions in the United States during 1941 over the 1940 total. During the year, 1452 wells were drilled in this area; of these, 1205 were drilled in or as extensions to the proven fields, and 247 were rank wildcats drilled in search of new producing pools. The comparable 1940 figures were: 1320 field or extension wells and 336 rank wildcats, a total of 1656 completions. This represents a decline in 1941 of approximately 8.7 per cent in proven-area wells, and of about 26.5 per cent in rank wildcats. It must be stressed that wells that were considered rank wildcats at the beginning of operations, but which opened production later classified as additions to existing fields, are not regarded as rank wildcats in this and previous annual reports on this same area. These wells are classified as semiwildcats (Table 2). There were 13 new oil or distillate fields and 4 new gas areas opened during the year, as listed in the next column. This listing represents a decline of 32 per cent from the 25 new areas found during the previous year, and to a great extent can be attributed to the 26.5 per cent decline in wildcatting. The rate of new discoveries based on the 247 wildcats was 14.5 to I, which compares somewhat unfavorably with the 13.4 to I ratio obtained in 1940 (Table 5). Dry wildcats totaled 230. The proof of the prolific character of the South Texas area as a source of petroleum reservoirs is to be found in the fact that of the 1205 field or extension (semiwildcat) wells completed during the past year 61 opened production from new sands or found crude in formerly distillate-producing sands. The 1940 total of 1320 such wells accounted for 50 horizons that provided either new production or crude in distillate sands, and in this respect the 1941 rate of discovery shows to greater advantage, the ratios for new sands being 19.7 to I for 1941 and 26.4 to I for 1940. "Anew condominium complex in Arlington, Va., presented some formidable constraints. One was the requirement for a permanent retaining wall to support a 48.5-ft (15-m) cut and an existing 16- story building on top of the slope. Another was the adjacent property owners’ refusal to allow tieback anchors to encroach on their property. The General Contractor (GC) proposed an innovative design incorporating vertical concrete load-bearing elements (LBEs) supported by post-tensioned tiedowns. The owner accepted and the project was successfully completed in 2007.The original designer had proposed a system that included a temporary, raked soldier pile and lagging wall and a permanent cantilever retaining wall with a large piled footing. The system was potentially costly and its constructability questionable.The GC then asked for a design-build alternative to reduce costs and enhance the schedule. The first idea was a diaphragm wall with vertically anchored T-sections. However, configuring a crane to excavate perpendicular sections using grab equipment seemed impossible. There were also utilities approximately 25 ft (9 m) from the existing building, two tiered retaining walls down the slope and a large swimming pool at the base. However, the GC was committed to providing a stable bench 20 ft (6 m) wide along the wall alignment to support the crane.The design evolved to single bite panels using diaphragm wall technology, commonly called LBEs, or barrettes, when they carry vertical loads. For this project, 44 LBEs were horizontally spaced at 9 ft (2.75 m) on center, oriented perpendicular to the wall, extending into bedrock and anchored vertically on the upslope side to resist overturning moments. They were essentially large soldier piles that provided both temporary and permanent support of excavation.An unusual formal agreement was established with the GC to complete the work based on pricing, and prior to completion of final design. This arrangement allowed for an exchange of ideas that increased project efficiencies and lowered costs — without the fear that design concepts would be “shopped” to competitors."

There are continuing developments in underground narrow vein mining, from innovative mining methods using low-profile equipment to adaptations of current mining methods using equipment such as road-headers. The development of new mining methods and mining equipment has one purpose in mind û to extract narrow reef orebodies keeping dilution to a minimum, whilst maximising mining recovery. Achieving this will increase the head grade of the ore mined and reduce the tonnes delivered to the mill. Narrow vein mining in Australia has been limited to traditional hand held or mechanised drill and blast methods using existing æoff the shelfÆ equipment. Numerous trials have been undertaken using rock cutting technology and lower profile equipment, but these mining trials have not resulted in the full implementation of any new mining method or the adoption of low profile equipment in narrow vein mines as an accepted mining methodology. Mine operators in Canada and South Africa have teamed up with a number of equipment manufacturers and have taken steps to further mechanise and automate the mining of narrow vein orebodies, in particular to increase safety and productivity. The challenge to Australian narrow vein mining projects is to capitalise on work undertaken by overseas mining companies and equipment suppliers and to investigate the adaptation of low profile coal mining machinery to specialised metalliferous mining. With the inevitable fall in metal prices, it is necessary for Australian mine owners and mining contractors to apply these specialised methods and equipment to make narrow vein mining profitable.

IN the Parkes process of lead refining, after desilverization has been completed by means of zinc additions, there will remain in the lead from 0.5 to 0.6 per cent zinc. At this stage in the refining practically all impurities are reduced to refined lead specifications except zinc and antimony. All excess of copper and nearly all the arsenic goes out with the silver. Silver remaining should not exceed 0.1 oz. per ton. It thus remains only to remove zinc and antimony to produce refined lead. The older practice was to complete refining by means of oxidation processes in reverberatory furnaces. Essentially this consisted of heating the lead to 1200° to 1300° F. and allowing it to come in contact with a considerable excess of air passing through the furnace, or accom-plish the same result by blowing the lead with steam by means of pipes introduced for that purpose, at the same time allowing air to enter the furnace. Usually some procedure involving alternate oxidation and reduction with fine coal or coke was employed in order to reduce the weight of dross or skim finally removed from the furnace. This practice had many elements of weakness in that the main flow of lead, after the preceding expensive operations had been performed, and the whole refining process nearly completed, was subjected to an operation at a comparatively high temperature, which involved much lead loss if the furnaces were not on bags, and the production of 3 to 5 per cent of the weight of the lead as dross or skim, which had to be resmelted and the lead either refined or produced as antimonial lead. In addition, the operating expense of the process was a considerable item. The, process of dezincing with chlorine was developed as a substitute for the foregoing described oxidation process, and finally resulted in such advantages as nearly equal operating costs, a practical elimination of the lead loss, and the direct production of a very valuable byproduct, zinc chloride, that may be sold as such or retreated for its zinc and chlorine contents, both of which can be reused in the refining processes.

Previous analyses of small samples of mining projects have found that feasibility studies tend to well under-estimate the actual capital costs of the project. Our review of 63 mining and smelting projects completed over 4 decades confirms that as-built capital costs are, on average, 25% higher than as estimated at the bankable feasibility study stage. There appears to be little attenuation over time of this bias in capital cost estimation, at first appearing to reflect an absence of learning on the part of the consulting engineer. We instead argue that this persistence of bias is intentional, driven by a scarcity of project financing and the need to inflate the project economics in a bid to secure financing. Around this intentional bias is a considerable amount of scatter. Roughly half of all projects’ as-built capita costs fall outside of the expected ±15% of the feasibility study capital cost estimate, even after allowing for intentional estimation bias. Cost overruns of 100% or more happen in roughly 1 out of 13 projects. The data reveal that a shifted lognormal probability distribution should be used when modeling mining project capital costs in a Monte Carlo analysis.

The pressure filtration behavior of dispersed and flocculated alumina slurries at high percent loadings is discussed with an objective to determine the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by surfactants that are considered to act by electric and steric stabilizers. The effect of both the ionic and nonionic surfactants was investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and final cake properties are discussed.

Discussion by E. Arioglu Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors&apos; paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence [(ASmax)] induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/1- p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion&apos;s Fig. 1 (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goat may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between [ASmax/m vs. h/1-p]. This is based on Luo and Peng&apos;s field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell&apos;s (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng&apos;s 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data. It may be noted here that Wardell&apos;s approach (1969) can be successfully utilized for longwall panels having chain pillars. Abstract: Development of cost-effective techniques for recovering precious metals from their ores has been the goal of metallurgists for hundreds of years. Today, metallurgists are increasingly called upon to design processes for ores that are refractory to conventional recovery techniques. These challenges and the addition of environmental costs (including site remediation) to the total cost of mining have stimulated a search for alternatives to conventional processes, such as cyanidation. This paper describes the progress made to date in development of an innovative alternative to cyanidation, termed bisulfide leaching, for extracting gold, silver and platinum-group elements from refractory ores and concentrates. While bisulfide leaching can be implemented abiotically, significant benefits accrue from its practice as a bioprocess that integrates the steps of precious-metals liberation and extraction. In many applications, bisulfide leaching appears to offer significant advantages over the traditional cyanidation process. Dissolved bisulfide and hydrogen sulfide are much less toxic than dissolved cyanide and hydrogen cyanide. Recommended workspace exposure limits and harmful concentrations for hydrogen sulfide gas are higher than those for hydrogen cyanide gas. While the facilities required to practice the bioprocess on an industrial scale would be similar to that of cyanidation plants, chemical reagent costs could be 80 percent less. The bioprocess may also offer advantages in the leaching of ores and concentrates that are not amenable to cyanidation. For example, bisulfide leaching of ores containing carbonaceous material may produce higher gold recoveries if the "preg-robbing" characteristic of the material can be controlled biologically or with dissolved sulfide binding. Moreover, in that precious metals are much more soluble than base metals in bisulfide solutions, bisulfide leaching offers distinct advantages over cyanidation for selective dissolution of precious metals from base-metal concentrates. Thus, the bioprocess uses the natural sulfur cycle to mitigate pollutant production and to enhance precious-metals recovery.

"Cyclic voltammetry experiments were conducted on copper and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in the absence and presence of ethyl xanthate, and compared to mass-balanced EH–pH diagrams. The results for copper duplicate those found in the literature and confirm xanthate chemisorption. However, the, results indicate that chalcopyrite oxidizes to chalcocite (Cu2S) and only afterwards is chemisorption observed due to small currents appearing with xanthate. This phenomenon suggests that the mineral's hydrophobicity is induced by more than dixanthogen and copper xanthate. Hydrophobicity was found to be pH-dependent over a range of alkaline conditions (pH 7–11) at narrow potentials (0 to –200 mV). An EH–pH diagram for chalcopyrite with xanthate is presented to illustrate the conditions under which chalcopyrite would be hydrophobic and thereby more thoroughly explain the results in the literature. IntroductionSulphide minerals are generally concentrated from ores by froth flotation, a physiochemical process that induces separation based on differences in hydrophobicity. In this process, a gas is bubbled into a slurry and the minerals that are hydrophobic (water-repelling) adhere to the bubbles and float to the surface while the hydrophilic (water-loving) minerals remain in the slurry. With sulphide minerals, the hydrophobicity is generally established in two ways. The first is by the addition of a collector, which is a heteropolar molecule with a reactive inorganic head group and an inert organic tail. Typically, the head group bonds with the sulphide mineral surface by adsorbtion either chemically (chemisorption) or physically (physisorption) or by complexing with atoms that solubilize somewhat at the surface (surface precipitation). These interactions leave the organic tail protruding from the mineral surface, thereby inducing hydrophobicity. The second method is by oxidation of the mineral surface to form a layer that is metal-deficient/sulphide-rich or comprised of elemental sulphur. Because the layer mimics naturally hydrophobic sulphur, this enables ‘collectorless’ flotation. Furthermore, this oxidation phenomenon adds an electrochemical dimension to the understanding of sulphide mineral flotation."

The chlorination behaviors of pure iron and manganese oxides were investigated by combining a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique with batch-boat roasting followed by leaching. Ferrous and manganeus oxides could be chlorinated readily, but, in the absence of a reductant, the higher oxides of both iron and manganese were difficult to chlorinate. Thermogravimetric analysis curves were drawn to illustrate the complexitites of the reactions, and the possible mechanisms were discussed. Then three manganiferous materials from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota were treated by a process involving the selective chlorination of manganese followed by leaching. The results were interpreted in the light of the chlorination mechanisms observed on the pure iron and manganese oxides.

The report is too voluminous to be considered in detail within the scope of a single paper, so I will confine my consideration of it to the broader aspects, leaving other members to deal with points of particular interest. The method of presentation leaves one with an uneasy sense of prolixity and confusion of thought; the foreword by the Chairman may well be accepted as a true index of the whole. His argument amounts to this: Recognizing at the outset the futility of divided counsels, it was deemed advisable to arrive at unanimity. To this end, some members subscribed to views to which they do not whole-heartedly assent, thus giving weight to conclusions with which they were at variance. Unanimity cannot be qualified-either it exists or is absent-and, moreover, in the text of the Com-mission I can find no word that unanimity is required. Surely it would have been preferable to have a unanimous report covering such aspects as were acceptable to all members, with minority reports by individual members on such other aspects as were controversial, leaving it to the Government to give such weight to the divergent views as the personality of their sponsors might warrant. In the final analysis the value of an opinion varies directly as the personality of its exponent.

"Underground coal mining in the U.S. is conducted in numerous regions where previous workings exist above and/or below an actively mined seam. Miners know that overlying or underlying fully extracted coal areas, also known as gob regions, can result in abutment stresses that affect the active mining. If there was no full extraction, and the past mining consists entirely of intact pillars, the stresses on the active seam are usually minimal. However, experience has shown that in some situations there has been sufficient yielding in overlying or underlying pillar systems to cause stress transfer to the adjoining larger pillars or barriers, which in turn, transfer significant stresses onto the workings of the active seam. In other words, the overlying or underlying pillar system behaves as a ""pseudo gob."" The presence of a pseudo gob is often unexpected, and the consequences can be severe. This paper presents several case histories, summarized briefly below, that illustrate pseudo gob phenomenon:• Pillar rib degradation at a West Virginia mine at 1100-foot (335 m) depth that contributed to a rib roll fatality.• Pillar rib deterioration at a Western Kentucky mine at 570-foot (175 m) depth that required pillar size adjustment and installation of supplemental bolting.• Roof deterioration at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1300- foot ( 400 m) depth that stopped mine advance and required redirecting the section development.• Coal burst on development at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1700-foot (520 m) depth that had no nearby pillar recovery.• Coal burst on development at a West Virginia mine at the relatively shallow depth of 1100 feet (335 m) that also had no nearby pillar recovery.The paper provides guidance so that when an operation encounters a potential pseudo gob stress interaction the hazard can be mitigated based on an understanding of the mechanism encountered.INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. underground coal mining industry has conducted mining in multiple seam environments, where the active mining has underlying or overlying old workings at varying interburden distances, throughout its history. Often no serious consequences arise from the multiple seam mining. However, sometime mines have been confronted with hazards from underlying or overlying workings that include localized roof and rib failure, pillar system failures through propagating roof falls and floor heave, and also pillar bursts."
