The Imperial Smelting Process for the simultaneous production of zinc and lead is probably regarded by the ecologist as a necessary evil with the benefits of its products marginally outweighing the adverse effects of its operation. The purpose of the paper is to examine the environmental impact of the process and to provide information which will demonstrate that the process has considerable indirect environmental benefits and that success is being achieved in reducing direct pollution of the environment by the process. About 12 per cent of the world's zinc and seven per cent of its lead is produced by the process. This proportion will increase with the construction of a new smelter in China. After a brief description of the process the paper considers one of its principal advantages, its ability to treat bulk concentrates. The production of these at the mine can have a number of environmental benefits. Less comminution may be required to separate the metals from the gangue than is needed to separate them from each other; recoveries can be improved in flotation resulting in cleaner tailings dams, less power demand and reduced consumption of potentially hazardous reagents. Simplification of mining and above ground ore handling may also give significant benefits . The process is a considerable consumer of secondary materials such as galvanisers' ashes, copper smelter dusts and materials containing zinc and lead derived from steel plant dusts. The majority of these materials are fed to the blast furnace after hot briquetting. The consumption of secondary materials is a considerable environmental benefit since otherwise they would require to be dumped in secure land-fill sites. The operation of the process itself continues to be subjected to increasingly stringent environmental standards of which examples are provided. Details are provided of lead emissions at Avonmouth showing considerable success in reducing these while increasing production. The slag from the process continues to find many useful applications.

"MMG (Minerals and Metals Group) operates the LXML Sepon’s mineral processing facility located 40 kilometers north of the town of Sepon, in the Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The Sepon copper plant produces 70,000 tons/year of LME grade A copper cathode using leachautoclave- SX/EW-flotation technology (Baxter et al., 2003). Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid and soluble ferric ion for the leach circuit. Low pyrite recovery has been an on-going challenge in the flotation circuit. Final tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute (Bassell et al., 2006) showed that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines.In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-MMG technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt and was unavailable for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the low pH (< 1), high dissolved metal ion environment and will not complex with metal ions in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which was subsequently followed by on-plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.INTRODUCTIONLow pyrite recovery has been an ongoing problem in the flotation circuit at Sepon. Sulfur recovery (indirect measure of pyrite) was improved from 40% to 65%-75% in mid-2005 when on site laboratory work confirmed that AERO® 8045 Promoter was a more effective collector then AERO® 407 Promoter. However, sulfur recoveries above 65% could never be achieved. Sepon requested the Ian Wark Research Institute to complete a surface analysis study using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy to determine if clay coated pyrite played a role. It was concluded that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse (+ 100µm) liberated particles and finer (-74µm) particles that have been coated by clay fines. The majority of the losses appear to be due to the former. In December of 2005, a series of diagnostic tests were performed in Stamford using synthetic plant water in order to identify what chemistries would likely be robust in the slimy low pH and high dissolved metal ion solution environment. Results showed that several chemistries would not complex with ferric, ferrous or copper in solution and therefore should perform well in the Sepon flotation. The incumbent collector, AERO® 8045 Promoter was complexing with metal ions in solution. This resulted in the collector not being available for adsorption onto pyrite."

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

The apparent small effect of skimming on desulphurization is somewhat misleading because the data was collected during the first months of use on the skimmer. During this period of time, the operators were, of course, just learning to use the equipment and, consequently, in many cases a so-called skimmed heat may have only been partially skimmed. In addition, during this period, the percentage of sulphur in the blast furnace slag was gradually increasing because of the increasing oil injection rates being employed at the blast furnace. An additional factor that cannot be disregarded is the apparent slower slag formation rate obtained in the BOF when the blast furnace slag is removed. This is evidenced at our shop by a much stronger tendency toward sparking and related lance skulling problems with deslagging, in spite of satisfactory manganese levels in the hot metal. Naturally, slower slag formation could account for poor desulphurization which would partially offset the beneficial effect of a lower sulphur input.

An airborne dust survey was conducted at the Arthur W. White mine of Dickenson Mines Limited by CANMET/MRL and Dickenson Mines Limited Staff in April 1990 for the purpose of evaluating environmental conditions underground and in the surface mining plants. The survey was designed to measure respirable silica, total arsenic and lead concentrations at several workplaces. In addition, settled dust and rock samples were collected from workplaces and analysed for total arsenic content. More importantly, arsenic exposure data were needed to evaluate the impact of Ontario Regulation 176/86 as amended by Ontario Regulation 23/87. A total of 165 area and personal air filter samples were collected during the study. Of these, 85, 67 and 13 samples were for arsenic, silica and lead respectively. Sampling aid analyses were performed according to the Ontario Ministry of Labour Regulations. More than 90% of the workplaces sampled for respirable silica, total arsenic and lead were below the Ontario Ministry of Labour Regulations; and 10% of the workplaces sampled for arsenic shaved concentrations above the Threshold Limit value (TLV) proposed in the Ontario Regulation 176/86 as amended by Ontario Regulation 23/87. These results were used to identify occupations and/or workplaces where more sampling and control measures were required respirable silica, total arsenic and lead. This paper describes the results of the dust sampling program conducted at Dickenson Mines Limited.

This paper is one of a aeries being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and practices used in mining and preparing crushed stone for market. Performance, in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour, is given whenever that information can be obtained. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods and are included if available. In addition to descriptions of equipment and methods used the Bureau considered it desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made, This paper is particularly concerned with the operation of the Liberty quarry and plant of the Campbell Limestone Co, The plant is in Pickens County, adjacent to the main line of the Southern Railway, and is about 18 miles west of Greenville, S, C. ENGINEERS as a group are often criticized because they have been responsible for the development of many technical improvements only to allow the administration of them to pass into the hands of others who may have little understanding of how they operate and little competence in their use. These criticisms are not always justified. There are many engineers who have shown themselves to be great administrators in addition to being great creators or builders, and more and more one sees the engineer demonstrating unusual administrative ability as he moves into the executive ranks. The last five or ten years have seen a new movement developing in this country-a movement brought about through the recognition by business statesmen that successful business administrators and executives just cannot be expected to develop like Topsy, that the management of a company must deliberately take steps to cultivate the proper climate or environment for growth if it wishes to provide an adequate and capable succession of executives in the future. This movement has taken on a number of names-Management Development, Executive Development, Personnel Development-but are these not actually misnomers? Can we develop anybody? In the strictest sense of the word, the author doubts that anyone can change any other person, at least, not much. The change must come from within. Perhaps this movement should be looked at not as a program of developing people but as one of giving people an opportunity to develop themselves. In the Humble Oil & Refining Co. there is an Executive Development Program; maybe it might better be called a Program of Development for Executives.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Department of Energy, has attempted to increase the activity of nickel catalysts for converting synthesis gas, derived from coal, to a substitute natural gas. This report describes the effects of low-level additions of B, Ca, Ce, Co, Mn, Mo, Pd, Re, Ti, Y, Zn, and Zr on the methanation activity of Raney nickel. The methanation rate at 320° C and the resistance to poisoning by 2 ppm H2S were used to compare catalysts. The effects of the additions were small, and the experimental variances were large, necessitating the use of statistical methods to identify significant effects. Co, Ti, Y, and Zn improved the resistance to H2S poisoning, but only Co improved the methanation rate In some individual catalysts containing Ca, Mo, or Mn, both the methanation rate and resistance to H2S poisoning were improved.

High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m along mine walls. First arrival times from the seismic data were used to produce P-wave velocity tomograms. The tomograms show transition from low velocity zones to velocity associated with competent rock. We interpret the low velocity zones to indicate residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock. Our method can be applied efficiently in an underground environment to provide continuous velocity information with depth into a mine wall over a span of approximately 10m.

Blending frothers is becoming common in flotation practice apparently enhancing performance. However, there have been no studies to understand the blend mechanism. In this paper, the effect of two frother blends ofF150 (polyglycol) with MIBC or pentanol (both alcohols) on bubble size, gas holdup and froth height is reported. The blends focused on a small addition of the polyglycol to the alcohols as base frother. The tests showed that the bubble size at blend concentration below the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) of the base frother was decreased but was significantly larger above the base CCC. Froth build-up showed a strong synergistic effect.

During foundry sand reclamation process development, molds formed from reclaimed chromite sand showed a rapid decline in tensile strength during thermal cycling tests. Because this characteristic could limit reuse of chromite sand in the. foundry, the sand was examined in detail Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray mapping, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction were utilized to evaluate processed chromite sand. It was found that process variables such as binder composition, reclamation temperature, and processing method had a significant effect on the chromite sand particle surface. X-ray diffraction indicated a crystallographic change in the processed sands. Magnetic susceptibility also increased after processing. Diffusion of iron to the particle surface and increased surface roughness were identified as potential causes of the decreased tensile strength in the molds.

For some electronic applications where a dispersed electrically-conductive particulate-phase is employed, the conductivity of the surface (or near-surface region) of the particles provides for the primary mechanism which determines its electrical conductivity. Particles of a less expensive material, which may have desirable thermal-expansion properties, when coated with silver offer a means of also obtaining desirable electrical properties and at low cost. The research conducted was focused primarily on the development of silver-coated tungsten particles for thick-film polymeric conductors. The ammoniacal electrolyte was formulated from silver-nitrate, glycine inhibitor and formaldehyde reductant. The reduction, and subsequent deposition, of silver occurred selectively on the surface of the tungsten particles. Coated particles were assessed by SEM imaging. The thickness of the silver coating was estimated to be approximately 100nm on the basis of a mass account and the coating being uniform. The electrical conductivity of a silver-coated tungsten-powder pellet was found to be similar to that of a silver-powder pellet, of identical geometry.

The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co.(CC&V) celebrated completion of a two-year, $168.5-million expansion and capital improvement program. An open house celebration was held in the historic mining town of Victor, CO on Oct. 4, 2002. Hundreds of townspeople, the press and other invited guests from the mining industry joined the employees of CC&V in the celebration. The event included mine tours, company displays and a barbecue picnic, complete with a country and western band. The Cresson Mine is located about 40 km (25miles) west of Colorado Springs, CO between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The mine is the only large-scale gold mining operation in Colorado and now employs about 300 (ME, October 2001, pp.21-28). The operation is a joint venture between Anglo-Gold (Colorado) (67%), based in Greenwood Village, CO, and Golden Cycle Gold (33%), based in Colorado Springs. CC&V is managed by AngloGold North America. AngloGold North America is the U.S. subsidiary of AngloGold, the world’s second largest gold mining producer. AngloGold is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION Mobile excavating and handling equipment are important &apos;tools of trade&apos; in the mining and construction industries. The handling of this equipment must be mastered so that its limitations are learned and its harmonic use with other pieces of equipment is practiced. he sudden growth in mobile excavating and handling equipment type, size, complexity, and application started after the Second World War. This growth has not been accompanied by pertinent human factors research. Investigations into the proper and safe handling of such equipment with due regard for human and machine limitations are lacking. One such piece of equipment is the front-end loader (FEL), which during one cycle of operation excavates, loads, and hauls, (Lotfi and Adler, 1981). The diversity of action by FEL is archetypical among excavating and handling equipment. Front-end loaders are the most rapidly proliferating type of equipment in the industry. Also, front-end loaders are involved in the highest number of accidents involving mobile excavating and handling equipment. In the period 1970 to 1978, FEL&apos;s were involved in 27% of all mobile equipment accidents in surface mining (Adkins, 1980). Improving operational safety and efficiency will reduce the frequency of accidents. The performance of the operators can be evaluated and improved by the following steps: first, define the operating conditions and the operator workload intensity (Adler and Lotfi, 1983), second, monitor the operator to evaluate his task performance, and third, make recommendations based on the findings. The stressful nature of the equipment operating task is an acknowledged fact (Field, 1980). However, a systematic measurement of stress evaluation is lacking. In this paper, methods for measuring mental stress and fatigue, are defined, the mental load which caused the stress is outlined, and stress measurement methods are proposed. The Thalanga massive sulphide deposit is hosted by Upper Cambrian rhyolites and volcaniclastics of the Mt. Windsor Volcanics near their contact with overlying dacites, rhyolites and sediments of the Trooper Creek Formation. The ores and host rocks have been subjected to a single strong deformation and to lower to middle greenschist facies metamorphism. A main lens with surface gossan dimensions of 55U m x 6 m dips steeply, plunges shallowly to the west and is offset by a series of normal faults. It is flanked by smaller lenses to the east where the mineralized horizon is stopea out by granite. The area to the east and south of the gossan is masked by Tertiary cover. A complex exhalite package is represented by banded sphalerite-pyrite- galena-chalcopyrite, massive pyrite and chalcopyrite and assemblages dominated by dolomite, chlorite-actinolite, tremolite, talc, barite and rare gypsum. Accessory tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, bismuthinite, magnetite and native gold are associated locally. Pods of quartz-magnetite formed distally. The ores are underlain by strongly to moderately pyrite-silica-sericite altered rhyolites with the strongest alteration closest to an interred synvolcanic fault. This alteration is characterised by an enrichment in MgO, Na2O, FeS2 and base metals with a depletion in CaO and Na2O. There is a general enrichment in Pb and Zn towards the hanging wall with some enrichment of Cu near the base of the main lens due to replacement by ore tiuias near vent discharge sites. Zonation of Cu to 2n-Pb in also evident over narrow intervals

As the prices of metals slide, financial control of mineral processing operations becomes more and more important. Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance.There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise results.This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full quantification of sampling distributions, not just the sampling variance as has been possible in the past. These advances can be used together with simulation methods to tie down sampling precisions and develop calculations that quantify decision making risk when using the sampling results. A number of examples illustrate the use of the new advances and a final example indicates the development of risk analysis curves in the coupling of sampling precision to sale of a commodity.CITATION:Lyman, G J and Bourgeois, F S, 2015. The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop methods of removing phosphorus from the earthy, calcareous hematite ores of the Birmingham, Ala., iron district while simultaneously improving the grade and recovery of the iron values prior to furnacing. An attempt was also made to identify the phosphorus minerals present in the ores. The ores contained about 36 percent iron, 12 to 16 percent CaO, 15 to 20 percent hydrochloric acid insolubles, and 0.30 to 0.36 percent phosphorus. Fractions containing 5 to 15 percent phosphorus were isolated from the ores. Collophanite, Ca3P2O3?nH2O, a member of the apatite group, was the only phosphate mineral identified. Beneficiation methods using flotation and reduction roasting with magnetic separation yielded good grade iron concentrates, but were not as effective for reducing the phosphorus content of concentrates. Reduction roasting followed by fine grinding, magnetic separation, and acid leaching gave iron concentrates containing 62.5 percent iron and 0.04 percent phosphorus with an iron recovery of 82.9 percent and a phosphorus rejection of 93.7 percent. Reoxidation of reduced magnetic concentrates followed by acid treatment gave iron concentrates containing 58.1 percent iron and 0.02 percent phosphorus with 89.6 percent recovery of the iron and 96.5 percent rejection of the phosphorus.

La planta de lixiviación, extracción por solventes y electrodeposición (L-SX-EW) de Southern Perú es una operación hidrometalúrgica dedicada a la lixiviación ácido – bacteriana de los botaderos de mineral de baja ley de la Mina Toquepala, para la producción de cobre catódico de la más alta pureza. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe la evolución del sistema de control y supervisión de esta planta minera en Cuajone. Para ello, dicha planta debe tener una actualización constante de sus sistemas de control y ser capaz de cambiar con la velocidad a la que avanza la tecnología de Control de Procesos. Asimismo, debe contar con personal calificado que permita el desarrollo y modernización de los sistemas sea continuo y no dependa solo de expansiones y ampliaciones ejecutadas por especialistas externos. De forma que este software de supervisión, no solamente considera la capacidad de operar la planta, si no debe ser una ayuda tanto para el operador como para brindar información en la correcta toma de decisiones.
