This paper describes recent ground control challenges encountered at the longwall recovery areas of one of Bailey Mine?s two longwall faces and the proactive measures taken by CONSOL management and engineering to mitigate them. The challenges derived primarily from the following causes: (1) irregular roof coal and draw slate thickness, (2) presence of thick sandstone at the recovery area and extremely weak rocks below the sandstone, (3) close proximity to a regional anticline, (4) low shield set pressure and tip load, and (5) ineffective primary roof support that led to progressive failure of the headgate roof. The presence of the anticline contributed to extensive fracturing of the sandstone. Excessive pot-out in advance of the shields frequently occurred near mid-face due to the presence of thick draw slate and irregular roof coal near the recovery area. This, in turn, resulted in face heights that exceeded the maximum reach of the shields. Subsequently, during longwall meshing, when the advance rate slowed considerably, fractured sandstone would often break loose, causing the shields to yield, thereby reducing the height and inhibiting shearer movement. To improve the headgate and face conditions within the longwall recovery area, several actions were taken, including: (1) assessing site-specific roof geology by conducting in-mine roof coring around the recovery areas and by mapping immediate draw slate and roof coal thicknesses within surrounding entries, (2) increasing pump pressure and thus shield set pressures (3) diligently monitoring shield set pressures and longwall extraction horizon, (4) installing additional cable bolts and roof screening to prevent progressive failure of the immediate headgate roof, (5) fully-grouting supplemental cable bolts to improve headgate support stiffness, and (6) gluing the headgate roof within the recovery areas with polyurethane. As a result of these collective efforts, longwall recovery delays at Bailey Mine were reduced from 21 days in 2006 to nearly zero in 2009.

The effect of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, realgar and arsenopyrite on gold dissolution in cyanide media was investigated. The cyanidation of synthetic gold ores in the presence of various concentrations of sulfides was studied under constant experimental conditions. A mineralogical analysis of the minerals was performed. The leaching kinetics were determined. The negative effect of sulfides on the gold dissolution rate varies with the sulfide mineral and decreases according to the following order: realgar > pyrrhotite > chalcopyrite > pyrite > arsenopyrite. The chemical characterization of gold and sulfide minerals surfaces using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was undertaken to identify the mechanisms involved. XPS analysis showed that a passivation layer of sulfides, arsenic or iron compounds might form on the gold surface as a result of the dissolution of the sulfide minerals. In the past several years, there have been a number of blasting-related carbon monoxide migration incidents. In each case, there have been some common factors that appear to be related to carbon monoxide migration. Geology, heavy confinement of the blast, close proximity to the affected structure, and open pathways into the affected structure are just a few. Prince William County, VA is an area undergoing a boom in suburban development. In the year 2001, more than 4,050 new homes were constructed within the county.1 In the new housing development located in Bristow, VA, trench blasting was utilized to excavate proposed sewage and utility lines. On November 8, 2002, a trench blast was conducted for the installation of utility lines. Later that evening a carbon monoxide detector alarmed in a nearby house. The gas company and fire department sampled for carbon monoxide and measured 100 ppm and more than 200 ppm on the first floor and in the basement respectively. Subsequent efforts to prevent migration of CO into the nearby homes met with mixed results. The only reliable technique for protecting neighbors from CO appears to be the placement of CO monitors in the homes. The events are presented and discussed.

"The hazards associated with dust explosions are well known, and coal dust explosions present a significant hazard in the underground coal mining industry worldwide. In earlier work, we presented computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and test results for coal dust explosions within a 2.5 m diameter circular gallery, along with CFD simulations and test results for the suppression of these explosions with finely atomised water sprays. In this paper, we present refinements to the CFD modelling that yield a significantly improved calibration with the test results, and proceed to investigate by CFD the requirements for suppression of a coal dust explosion in a typical underground roadway. "The purpose of executing a project in a stagewise fashion is to evaluate all potential options in a cost-effective manner and develop an understanding of the project drivers, thereby minimizing overall project risk to the client. Among the more valuable tools for this exercise are production and financial models that can be used to quantify the sensitivity of the project to the critical parameters.The mine and concentrator used in this case study are located on the Kalahari Copper Belt, which extends from Zambia through northern Botswana into Namibia. This area of Africa has seen very little industrial development and the project will create much-needed employment and development in the region.The success of this project thus far can be attributed to the close cooperation between the geological, mining, and metallurgical disciplines. Regular updates of projected capital and operating cost estimates coupled with project outputs guided the teams in optimizing their various discipline models, ultimately delivering a compelling argument for the execution of the project. Key to the success was the development of a geometallurgical model for the prediction of concentrate tonnage, grade, and recovery for the life of the mine from the mining plan.This paper summarizes the metallurgical findings and the outcome of the various project stages. The development of the model is discussed, as are the challenges faced in developing a suitable metallurgical process route. IntroductionThe Kalahari Copper BeltThe Kalahari Copperbelt, which extends from Zambia across northwest Botswana into Namibia, is considered to be a broad time equivalent of the Central African Copperbelt, with a similar style of mineralization. However, at shallower depths (<25 m), chrysocolla and malachite exist in significant proportions in certain geological areas. As illustrated in Figure 1, the project is located in the Ghanzi-Chobe Fold Belt which forms part of the Kalahari Copper Belt. The Ghanzi Group, which overlies the lowest stratigraphic unit (the Kwebe Formation), consists of three formations, namely the Ngwako Pan, the D’Kar, and the Mamuno Formation (Hall, 2012)."

Following the completion of the 7,600 m primary access tunnel by Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) in April 1997, an exploratory East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was constructed at the Yucca Mountain Project over the proposed future repository block for high level nuclear wastes. The 2,681 m (8,796 LF) East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a re-built Robbins 5.000 m (16’-5”) hardrock TBM with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. Details of the unusual site and contract conditions will be discussed as well as with the unique tunnel equipment specified by the Owner. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project required eight months to complete.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied parts of the 19,747-acre Lower John Day (OR-005-006) and 7,538-acre Thirtymile (OR-005-001) Wilderness Study Areas in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Gilliam and Sherman Counties, OR, about 13 mi west of Condon. The area is underlain by the Miocene-age Columbia River Basalt Group. The Thirtymile study area is inferred to have 790,000 yd3 of subeconomic gold resources averaging 93.8 mg/yd3 gold ($1.21 yd3 at a gold price of $400 per oz) in two river bars. The Lower John Day study area has five river bars with gold occurrences totaling 1.0 million yd3 and averaging 13.5 mg/yd3 ($0.17 yd3) gold. A preliminary mining feasibility estimate suggests gold could be profitably mined in the study areas from placer deposits containing at least $3.83 yd3 in gold content. Stone, sand, and gravel occur in the study areas, but more accessible deposits are closer to regional markets. No mines or prospects are in or near the study areas; however, one lode mining claim, now abandoned, was located in the Thirtymile study area. Oil and gas leases cover both study areas.

The San Vicente Pipeline project involves the construction of an 8-1/2 foot diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile long tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel will be excavated in extremely variable geologic conditions consisting of strong granitic and metamorphic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. This paper discusses the challenging geologic conditions and some of the key design evaluations for the project. Currently design work for the project has been completed and construction will be underway by mid-2005.

A thermodynamic model has been developed for calculating phase equilibria and other properties of multicomponent electrolyte systems. The model has been designed to reproduce the properties of both aqueous and mixed-solvent electrolyte systems ranging from infinite dilution to solid saturation or pure solute limit. The model incorporates formulations for the excess Gibbs energy and standard-state properties coupled with an algorithm for detailed speciation calculations. The excess Gibbs energy model consists of a long-range interaction contribution represented by the Pitzer-Debye-Hiickel expression, a second virial coefficient-type term for specific ionic interactions and a short-range interaction term expressed by the UNIQUAC equation. The accuracy of the model has been demonstrated for common acids and bases and for multicomponent systems containing aluminum species in various environments.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron-and steel making and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation&apos;s mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. THE need for geophysicists to adopt a uniform mode of expressing the electrical resistivity of geological formations has been stressed by Dr. A. S. Eve.1 The present paper is to emphasize the point he raised, to bring the weight of disinterested authority to bear on the matter, and to urge the adoption henceforth, save in exceptional cases, of a standard expression for resistivity; all in the hope that the needed reform will thus actually be brought about. The general definition of the resistivity of a material is the resistance in ohms between two opposite faces of a unit cube of that, material. No account need be taken here of the cases in which the unit volume is not a cube, and the units of length and cross-section are different, encountered principally when dealing with metallic conductors such as wires. The idea of the resistance of a unit volume of earth or rock has found expres-sion in geophysical literature in a number of forms and with a variety of units. Fortunately, the metric system has been adhered to in most cases, so ordinarily the meter or the centimeter, usually the latter, has been the measure chosen. The resistivity is then the resistance of a cube of the given rock, or soil, one centimeter on, an edge. This is far from always being the same thing, however, as the resistance of a cubic centimeter. A long thin wire could contain a cubic centimeter and have a high resistance, whereas the same volume formed into a flat plate would have an entirely different, and quite low, resistance between faces. Con-sequently, it is not proper to express resistivity in ohms per cubic centi-meter, inch, etc., as has been done occasionally by .some writers. In an effort to emphasize the idea of cubic volume, some geophysicists, the writer among them, have used the phrase, ohms per centimeter cubed. This is a graphic way of picturing the measure, but is not in favor among highly qualified authorities. In this connection, an appeal was made to the U. S. Bureau of Standards for advice, and the Director, George K. Burgess, kindly replied in detail as to the practice adopted by his Bureau: ." . .&apos; such expressions as ohms per centimeter cubed&apos; or any similar expressions are objectionable, because they certainly carry the implica-tion that the resistivity is found by dividing ohms resistance by the volume in cubic centimeters." It now seems desirable to publish another collective index, and the Editorial Department, upon the authority of the Board of Directors, has prepared an index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive. This will be sold in the Institute&apos;s standard half morocco binding at a price of $5 and in paper covers at a price of $4. It wilt be ready in a few weeks. As we enter into the 21st Century, miners are looking more attentively at new mining technologies allowing decrease environment damage along with operational cost. This technic would allow developing of poor and difficult mineral deposits, including the World Ocean offshore zone. Borehole Mining is an underground/underwater remote method of mining carried out from floating platforms or vessels. Definition of Borehole Mining (BHM), working schematic, main technical data and its advantages are given. The method is currently in use in mining of different type of raw materials, such as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, coal, polymetallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and more. It is also in use in oil and gas stimulation, salt domes storages building and environmental problems solution. Recently recorded data of Borehole Mining productivity (80-100 t/hour/hole) and a depth of mining (over 1 km) has been achieved in a last couple years. Remoteness of method not only secures complete safety of operations but also allows wide sector of underwater applications. The World leaders in Borehole Mining are Russia and the United States. Based on previous experience the Universal Tool for Seabed Borehole Mining has been developed for wide sector of usage: from exploration and mining - through oil & gas stimulation to souterrain storages construction and lake&apos;s bottom cleaning.

The application of square shaft helical piers in expansive soils is a standard of practice in many areas of the United States. Over 20 years of performance monitoring show exceptional performance and economy will result if proper design procedures, specification requirements and installation procedures are followed. This is true for new foundations and the repair of existing foundations, including lightly loaded wood-frame structures on expansive soils. Proper design includes: 1) site geotechnical characterization, 2) pier layout such that each pier is loaded to its maximum design capacity, 3) maximize spans between piers, 4) minimize the number of piers, 5) isolate the structure from the expansive soil with an appropriate void zone below all grade beams, slabs or other components that would otherwise be in soil contact and 6) utilize only single helix piers. Proper specification employs a performance specification that specifies: 1) the design load on each pier with a suitable safety factor, 2) the minimum installation torque, typically 4,000 ft-lbs (5.4 kN-m), or refusal, 3) a minimum pier shaft steel Fy = 70 to 90 ksi (483 to 621 Mpa) and pier helix steel Fy = 80 ksi (552 Mpa), 4) 1.5 to 1.75 inch (38.1 to 44.5 mm) square shafts, 5) smooth shaft surface, 6) the ICC Evaluation Report (ER) number of the manufacturer and 7) the manufacturer ISO 9001 certification for material quality control. Proper installation requires: 1) equipment with sufficient axial compression force (crowd) on the pier shaft so the helix engages the soil and advances to the specified minimum installation torque or refusal, 2) additional specialized techniques for expansive soils and 3) qualified specialty helical pier installation contractors experienced in expansive soils who submit and utilize pier configurations, techniques and equipment that will most effectively and economically meet the specified performance.

Green house gases have become a major concern within the international community over the last two decades due to their potential link to global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the principal greenhouse gas. In the Kyoto Agreement, Canada has committed to reduce emissions by 6 % below 1990 levels by 2012. This presents a serious economic challenge to Canada and Alberta. Over the next decade, oil sands production expansion, population and industry growth and energy demand will increase CO2 emissions. Current and future CO2 emissions and their economic implications in Alberta will be critical in formulating a comprehensive and balanced policy for dealing with concerns in this area. Disposal of carbon dioxide (CO2) in land aquifers is a potentially viable option for Alberta in dealing with long-term CO2 emissions. Studies have confirmed the existence of appropriate aquifers in the Alberta Basin for CO2 storage over a long geological period. Carbon dioxide is an ideal candidate for aquifer disposal because of its high density and solubility in water at relatively high pressures. In this study, the authors develop a computer simulation model of a scaled aquifer disposal system. The scaled model consists of an injector well, aquifer environment with dominant Ca++ and Mg++ cations. Liquefied CO2 is injected at an appropriate pressure and concentration through an injector well model. The injected CO2 migrates from the point of contact between the injector well and the aquifer domain to the main regime of the latter. The rate of migration is a function of porosity, permeability, cations, aquifer fluid flow regime and CO2 injected pressure. These models are validated using flue gas data from the 546 MW Wabamum Power Plant in Alberta. The total energy requirements for aquifer CO2 disposal system are distributed between a minimum of 105 MW and a maximum of 172 MW, with a mean of 132 MW and a coefficient of variation of 10%. The results show that there is significant variability in all the energy requirements for the CO2 disposal system. The total energy requirements for the disposal system as a fraction of the total power generated by the Wabamum plant of 546 MW could be between 0.19 and 0.32. This is a very significant energy requirement and thorough analysis must be carried out to reduce this variability and energy requirements.

Efficient filtration of fine kaolin particles plays a crucial role in processing of raw kaolin to a marketable product. Oftentimes, filtration Is the rate controlling step of the whole process. As a consequence, plant production is dependent, to a great extent, on the rates being achieved In filtration. In order to alleviate the bottleneck in production, Nalco Chemical Company initiated a reagent development program to chemically enhance the performance of the filtration units. Filler aids of different classes were synthesized for evaluation. These include reagents whose primary mode of functionality were: coagulation, flocculation, thickening, and combinations of the preceding. All reagents that were synthesized and tested were listed under the appropriate Food and Drug Administration sections of the Code of Federal Regulations. This paper discusses the development and application of a new reagent that Improves the filter production rate with minimal Impact on filter solids. The results of laboratory filter studies along with plant data are presented and discussed. Plant data indicate that this reagent is capable of increasing production rates by as much as 35% on various clays of coarse particles to the finest fractions, as well as clays that are calcined. The reagent&apos;s Impact on solids content, re-slurrying characteristics, Brookfield and Hercules viscosity, and drying is within the standards set by plants who have evaluated and now use this product.

A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple-hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosives charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g. velocity, attenuation, pulse), or by backcalculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties are backcalculating individual pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shown to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included and additional verifications with field results are required.
