A list of publications of the United States Bureau of Mines, complete from its establishment to the end of June, 1931, may be had upon request. In addition a monthly leaflet of new publications is issued and is sent to those on the mailing list of the Bureau. Publications are separated into three main divisions: 1. Sales Publications.-Those for which a charge is made. Any orders or remittances in payment for sales publications should be sent directly to the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C., and not to the Bureau of Mines. Sales publications are classified into (1) Bulletins, (2) Technical Papers, (3) Economic Papers, (4) statistical reports of the mineral resources of the United States, (5) Monographs, (6) Handbooks, and (7) Schedules. Bulletins and Technical Papers present the results of scientific and technical investigations. Economic Papers are analytical studies of production statistics, sources, resources, .distribution, and industrial flow of mineral commodities. The Annual Report, entitled "Mineral Resources of the United States," includes chapters, published separately, on the production and consumption of metals and of nonmetallic minerals. RUDOLF GAIL, Miami, Ariz.-Since I wrote the paper on flotation which is in your hands, important developments have taken place, and, for this reason, I will try in a few words to bring it nearer up to date as far as the Inspiration plant is concerned. You, may have noticed that in the Inspiration concentrator, flotation is not solely relied upon for the recovery of the coarser material, but that flotation tailings are split into a sand and a slime product on drag classifiers. The sand product is treated on tables which thus supplement the work of the flotation machines. Extensive tests have shown, us that, if we wanted to, we could leave out these tables and substitute additional flotation machines, as they will make fully as good, if not a better recovery than tables on the deslimed feed, but the treatment would be more expensive, especially in view of the fact that oils are required which cost more than those which we are now using in our main flotation plant. We have, however, decided to apply flotation treatment to our table middlings. I would also like to add a few words regarding the treatment of oxidized copper ores. Although our experience shows that the addition of hydrogen sulphide and other soluble sulphides effects a very good recovery of copper carbonates with certain ores, we have not been able to prove that we could use it advantageously for the ore mixture which we are treating in our concentrator, and for this reason, have looked toward leaching for extracting the carbonate and silicate copper that we are losing now. Experiments in this direction are going on and are giving very encouraging results. It may interest you to hear that we intend to use limestone for the precipitation of the copper which goes into solution, as electrolytic precipitation seems to be out of the question on account of the diluteness of the resulting solutions, and precipitation by iron was rightly objected to on account of the unavoidable contamination of the water supply. We feel very hopeful about the success of our limestone precipitation which, if it holds what it seems to promise, will develop into a novel feature of copper metallurgy.

Dr. Wadsworth's discussion of leaching is straightforward and certainly points out some of the critical areas in regards to the fundamental aspects of leaching. I will address myself to the more practical aspects of leaching. As a couple of general comments, very fine particles are often dealt with only when necessary. In many processing applications the sands and slimes are separated with the sand portion being treated by common metallurgical techniques and the slime portion being treated essentially by any technology that will recover some of the values. Ore treatment techniques such as leach/precipitate/float (LPF) have been used in the copper industry to take advantage of leachable copper preferentially reporting to the fine fraction. The second advantage, of course, is the improved metallurgy associated with the treatment of the sand fraction. Cases can be made for sand/slime separations in the aluminum and uranium industry where most of the value reports to the slime fraction and the sand fraction is rejected In the agitated leach systems, fine particles are often the most readily attacked and leached. In dump, vat and in-situ leaching, fine particles cause considerable problems. The fines will tend to restrict the solution flow from portions of the leach feed. This either causes a significantly reduced solution flow or, more probably, the solution will channel, by-passing much of the ore. In either case the result is a decreased metal recovery from ore. The fine particles of principal concern are clays of a flat plate-like shape which can very effectively compact, swell and cause a decreased solution flow. Discrete silica grains or sulfide grains due to their shape, even though they may be very fine, will not cause nearly the problems clays and secondary precipitates can cause.

This study attempts to compare the costs of transporting coarse coal by pipeline, versus the more conventional use of belt conveyors. Hydraulic conveying of crushed (not pulverized) coal has not had widespread commercial acceptance. However, there is little doubt that the technology is available, so that, should this method be proven economical for a given application, implementation of this technology will become more acceptable. Hydraulic transport by pipeline between the mine stockpile and the coal preparation plant, for distances normally considered practical for an overland belt conveyor, should be an ideal application. In this application there is no need for dewatering facilities at the receiving end of the pipeline, because, the receiving screens at the plant serve this purpose. Further, clarified water from the preparation plant can be recirculated back to the mine, a plus for water resource and environmental considerations.

Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The advantages of rapid and accurate analyses are becoming appreciated in many industries today and have resulted in a great increase in the number of samples received by their laboratories. This has caused some firms to consider the installation of one or more of the instruments available for analytical chemistry. In this country there are relatively few people with experience of instrumental methods and it is difficult for a firm considering the installation of such equipment to assess the advantages which instruments may give them, and to decide which instruments, if any, will be of most use to them. The object of this paper is to give a brief survey of instrumental methods in the field of inorganic analysis. Instrumental methods of analysis have numerous advantages when used correctly. They enable extremely rapid analyses to be made in many cases, e.g., analysis of refined lead by purely chemical means takes about two days whereas spectographically the analysis can be completed in approximately one and a half hours. The accuracy ofinstrumental methods, generally between 1 and 5%, is higher than most chemical methods for small percentages of impurities. Furthermore, if the instrument can be calibrated against absolute standards the errors are usually random and not biased to one side of the correct result. The sensitivity is high, enabling in many cases the detection and determination of smaller percentages than can be detected chemically. This high sensitivity enables and, in some cases, requires the use of very small samples, and results in considerable savings in reagents, allowing the analysis of considerably more samples without undue loss...

Full-face shield leg pressures in a longwall panel for a three-month period were collected and analyzed. The pressure data were presented in the following forms: full- panel full-face shield pressure, individual shield pressure, full-face shield pressure, full-panel time-weighted-average pressure, and relationships among setting pressure, final pressure and pressure increment. Although shield pressure varies from shield to shield and from cycle to cycle, the setting pressure and face advance rate do control the 6nal pressure and time-weighted average pressure.

This first Annual Report covers the work on Contract No. H0377043 "Cable for Face Equipment", from August 1, 1977 to July 31, 1978. It reports the progress in the three areas of over-and short-circuit protection, cable ampacity research and cable couplers. Field trips have established many interesting facts related to circuit breaker settings and cable size. For example, the determination of cable sizes depends on the RMS duty cycle current determined by a particular piece of equipment, but the actual selection of the cable to be used is often a function of the maximum allowable circuit breaker instantaneous settings as specified in Title 30. In order to avoid nuisance tripping as a result of instantaneous starting current field, laboratory and analytical studies are being conducted to determine proper settings and cable sizes Also an extensive program has been established to monitor the performance of high voltage cable couplers and determine their modes of failure. Various equipments are being designed for laboratory testing, and an extensive reeled cable experiment is also under way.

Marathon PGM Corporation?s PGM-Cu Project in Northwestern Ontario (Figure 1.0) serves as a case study to describe the process involved in advancing a deposit from grass roots exploration to the completion of several feasibility studies and the parallel commencement of environmental permitting. Through the following examination of historical exploration activities, it is clear that these activities are directly related to economic stimulus, mostly measured by downturns in the mineral industry. Other factors that influence the success of exploration advancing to feasibility and new mine development includes the ownership of the mineral claims, which also changes under these economic influences and the crucial role of interactions between the Company, the Crown and First Nations. The Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is hosted within the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Proterozoic Coldwell Complex, which intrudes and bisects the much older Archean Schreiber-Hemlo Greenstone Belt. The sub-circular complex has a diameter of 25 km and a surface area of 580 km2 and is the largest alkaline intrusive complex in North America (Walker et al., 1993). Mineralization at the Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is part of a very large magmatic system that consists of at least three cross-cutting intrusive olivine gabbro units that comprise the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Coldwell Complex (Figure 3.2.4-3). In order of intrusion, the three gabbroic units consist of (1) Layered Gabbro Series, (2) Layered Magnetite Olivine Cumulate (LMOC) and (3) Two Duck Lake (TDL) Gabbro. The relative size and abundance of the gabbroic units decrease in the order Layered Gabbro Series>TDL Gabbro>>LMOC. Late quartz syenite and augite syenite dikes cut all of the gabbros but form a minor component of the intrusive assemblage.

A residue storage facility (RSF) was designed to cater for Davidson Creek Area and Robertson Range Area operations under the FerrAus Pilbara iron ore development project in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. Annual ore production was about 15 million tonnes over a period of up to 15 years. The RSF was designed to handle a tailings production rate of 2.2 Mt/a over the project life with ability to be expanded at a later date. The composition of tailings was predominantly -45 ¦ material with some spiral reject material. The fraction of solids was expected to be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent solids by weight.The RSF was designed as an above ground storage facility, integrating with a mine waste dump planned close to the selected RSF site. This integration helped to increase the stability of the RSF embankment and to reduce the construction cost. The main source of construction material for the remaining part of the RSF embankment was selected to be mine waste. The RSF was designed to be constructed in stages by considering the availability of mine waste according to the mining schedule. The use of mine waste for construction of RSF embankments has several benefits over use of borrowed material. These include less construction costs and less disturbances to the environment, by minimising borrowed areas and waste dump footprints.CITATION:Wanninayake, A, Novello, E and Gillani, I, 2013. A MINING institute open to all men interested in any branch of the mining industry will be held at the Col-lege of Mines, University of Washington, Seattle, during the week beginning March 5. Prospectors, miners, mine owners, persons interested in metallurgy, investors in min-ing enterprises, and the public generally are invited to at-tend. This institute will take the place of the Winter Min-ing Session which originated at Seattle in 1897 and con-tinued for twenty-eight years. The complete new equip-ment of the Mines Laboratory will be used to give demon-strations of new machines and processes of mining, ore dressing, and metallurgy. This year the ceramic industry, including cement and branches of clay working of special Importance in the Northwest, will be included in the insti-tute. All instruction will be given by specialists. Prominent technical men and managers will give lectures on their special subjects. Among the speakers engaged are G. T. Jackson, formerly superintendent of the Alaska-Gas-tineau and the Chichagof mines, who will speak on the mining of large bodies of low-grade ore; R. F. McElvenny, superintendent of the Tacoma Smelter, on the nature of contracts that a smelter can offer to mines and prospects; M. D. Leehey, mining lawyer, on some popular errors re-garding the mining law; H. H. Townsend, on the explora-tion and purchase of prospects by operating companies; J. L. McAllen, on quartz mining in the Willow Creek dis-trict, Alaska; F. Powell, on gold dredging. In the evenings, lectures illustrated by stereopticon views and moving pic-tures will be given. According to the June 27 issue of Business Week, Rep. Kearns (R., Pa.) introduced a bill in Congress along lines suggested by the National Society of Professional Engineers, to amend the Taft-Hartley Act to permit scientific, technical, and professional groups to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions with management-with the protection and support of the federal law. The article reports that the bill is opposed by a loosely knit group of professional and technical unions, the Engineers & Scientists of America. This group wants Taft-Hartley amended to make it an unfair labor practice for employers to discuss collective bargaining matters with professional organizations.

THE purpose of this article is not to compare one type of grinding machinery with another and to conclude from a series of tests that one particular machine is superior to all others. Neither is the reader asked to tire himself with the details of many tests to prove the statements herein made. The Chilean mill stands today almost, in outcast from the milling world. It ranks with the applicant for a job who has been given a trial along with others and condemned because he was not able to perform the definite task assigned as well as the others, and was forever eliminated. The judges did not tarry long enough to try this aspirant in a field of a slightly different nature. Even though it has been condemned, the writer contends that the published records will indicate that the trials were never shifted into the field of greatest efficiency for the Chilean mill. Those of us who cling to this outcast as a fine grinder in our milling operations do not wish, naturally, to be condemned along with the machine, and yet we feel that we are classed as behind the times, at least in this phase of our milling judgment. Hence there is considerable personal feeling in our efforts. During the last few years there have been published several papers on the relative merits of the various grinding machines. In two of these articles a comparison was made between Chilean mills and cylindrical grinders. In each case the Chilean mill came out second best from about all standpoints. The outstanding feature in these comparisons would seem to be the decided attempt to keep all conditions the same, so that each machine could be judged on its merit. As Mr. David Cole states, "We are inclined to regard a direct comparison of grinders arranged side by side, and making a product that affords as nearly as possible the same screen measure, as the Supreme Court in these grinding matters." The writer agrees that this is the very best method for true comparison between machines. The results in the two detailed tests should give the relative merits of the two grinders in doing the work assigned. And they probably do. The conclusion drawn in each case was adverse to the

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

The slag removed from the reverberatory furnaces of copper smelters contains significant copper values. A serious financial loss is involved, as further recovery operations are not normally carried out. This paper describes the factors affecting physical transport of matte into slag by gas bubbles, and the subsequent entrapment and flotation of matte drops. Three distinct patterns of transport behaviour have been identified from studies of a number of liquid/liquid systems, including liquid metal and liquid matte systems. A theoretical approach is proposed to explain these behaviour patterns, and to predict transport and entrapment behaviour in matte/slag systems. The concepts of "Film Coefficient" (ø) and "Flotation Coefficient" (?) are introduced. The effects of smelting process variables on the physical loss of copper matte in slag are also discussed.

A major component of Sydney’s new South West Rail Link project is the Hume Highway Underpass (HHU), an 80 m long twin track mined tunnel excavated at a depth of just 5 m below the pavement of the Hume Highway; one of Australia’s busiest road corridors.In order to ensure a safe and efficient construction of the underpass without disruption to the Hume Highway traffic, design of the HHU required specific focus on the prediction and control of ground movements. This paper describes the design and construction solutions adopted in response to these challenging constraints.
