The sizing and classification circuits at the Mt. Newman Beneficiation Plant have performed satisfactorily. Investigations have been aimed at solving minor problems and achieving small' improvements. Emphasis has been placed on cost reduction rather than metallurgical performance. It has been found that some circuits will give better performance with the sieve bends removed. 1.0 BACKGROUND Mt. Newman. Mining operates a major iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Rainfall is sparse (average 250 mm/year). Current mining is all above the water table. What rain there is tends to run off quickly instead of soaking in. The total operation produces about 30 Mt/ year of saleable product. Most of this product comes from high grade crushing plants where ore from the quarries is simply crushed and conveyed to product stockpiles. About 3 Mt/ year comes from the Beneficiation Plant.

Silver-lead mineralization at Indooroopilly, Queensland, extends upwards from Upper Triassic rhyolite which intrudes phyllite-containing Palaeozoic mineralization.Sulphides and magma were emplaced in a special structural site which underwent dilational fracturing while surrounding rocks were block-faulted and compressed. This site lies at tbe intersection of dykes, faults, and a lineament adjacent to a Middle Triassic granitic stock.Structural controls at Indooroopilly are attributed to the effects of piston faulting. Exploration for similarly controlled deposits should be directed towards structural intersections near stocks or batholiths which have intruded mineralized belts. Priority should be given to structural intersections which were sites of block-faulting and igneous activity under compressional tectonic conditions.Favourable sites lacking surface mineralization may contain ore at depth as piston faulting produces 'blind' ore deposits.

Tin mining has taken place in the New England region of New South Wales since 1872. Until fairly recent times there was little pro- vision made for environmental protection. Mining methods,which included ground sluicing and open cutting,had considerable environmental impact. Much of the topsoil was lost and there is little vegetation on the infertile and at times toxic, subsoil. Thus much of the lands disturbed by mining have not been stabilised and are eroding, causing extensive pollution of adjacent watercourses. There are more than 1500ha of abandoned tin mine sites in the New England, representing one of the worst rehabilitation problems in New South Wales and reflecting poorly on the mining industry as a whole. Recent tin mining operations incorporate progressive rehabilitation in their mining cycle. Topsoil is stockpiled and later respread. This topsoil contains a seed source, facilitating revegetation and thus stabilisation. The tin mining industry, under considerable cost pressures at present, is seeking a cost- effective revegetation technique. Most of the mines in the New England are situated in a forest environment. Trials have been conducted in the past using exotic pasture species with limited success due to the characteristics of the subsoil. Other revege- tation trials have used pine or eucalypt tree species. The cost of these techniques is a major disadvantage. Certain acacias species were observed colonising disturbed tin mining areas on very infertile subsoils. Acacias have a number of characteristics indicating a possible applic- ations in mine rehabilitation programmes.

In the near future, Bong Mining Company (BMC) will start mining a new deposit known as Zaweah II which is a narrow iron orebody requiring multiple row blasts with the bench floor as a free face. This called for the development of a new blasting technique. The article delineates the problem and its restrictions related to blasting. It also describes the approach which was taken for developing this new blasting technique which is essentially an application of the cratering theory with near spherical charges. Basic crater tests were conducted using various combinations of hole sizes, explosive strengths and delay patterns. From the results obtained, several alternatives were considered for production blasts and the most promising ones were evaluated.

Whether pursuing hedging or speculative strategies, gold miners can increase sales revenues 1 % to 6% by constantly pricing production forward. Unlike other commodities, gold futures prices are consistently higher than spot prices. A Colorado School of Mines study showed theoretically and empirically that in the 15 years since the price of gold was released from government control, the forward price for gold has been higher than the current price almost 100% of the time. The reason why Metal traders know that holders of metal earn a bonus selling forward when the metal is in "contango." "Contango" is a mysterious word that crept into the trading vocabulary a century ago. It designates a situation when the price of a metal on the futures markets is higher than the price in the immediate or spot market. If the spectrum of spot and futures prices remains static over time, the forward seller who has contracted at a higher than spot price can make a profit equal to the contango by redeeming his commitment at the lower spot price when the contract matures. Consequently, when a seller in a contango market hedges, he makes a profit on the transaction in addition to avoiding a price change risk. On the other hand, buyers of the metal who hedge in a contango situation will sustain a loss equal to the contango. Producers of gold, however, are sellers of gold. For most metals and oil, there is no inherent reason why futures prices should be higher than present prices. Buyers and sellers decide that the price of the commodity will be lower or higher than present values for a variety of reasons.

The support of stopes and tunnels in South African gold mines subject to rockburst damage requires special attention. The interaction of a seismic wave with either a stope or a tunnel is subject to a number of variables, namely the distance from the source of the event, the ground velocity, the orientation of the excavation with respect to the direction of the seismic wave, and the geology and fracturing around the excavation. This paper discusses these factors in relation to the support requirements in stopes and tunnels. The need for the integration of hydraulic props with stope support and the use of yielding anchors for tunnel support are emphasized.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nevada, hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten, which cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydrometallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hr, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of NazCO3 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution- to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hr, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 pct WO3. The pregnant solution contained 11 q of W03/1.

Axial pile performance can be rationally evaluated within an elastic continuum framework using field results from seismic piezocone tests (SCPTu). Adopting a versatile Randolph-type elastic pile model, the approach can be applied to either traditional top down loading using an anchored reaction beam or the newer Osterberg cell that simultaneously pushes the base and shaft in opposite directions. The axial load distribution within the shaft is also evaluated. For site-specific data at a given site, the SCPTu is an optimal means for collection of subsurface information because it combines penetrometer readings and downhole geophysics in one sounding. The results obtained are at opposite ends of the stress-strain-strength curves, specifically the peak strength for capacity interpretations and the small-strain stiffness (Emax) for evaluating the initial deformations. Axial pile capacity can be analyzed using both direct and indirect CPT methods. As such, the approach allows for a complete representation of the axial load-displacement-capacity curve for pile response. Case studies are presented for deep foundations situated in stiff clays at two national geotechnical test sites located in Houston and College Station, Texas, using top down loading, as well as a third case study of a drilled shaft in clay till loaded by O-cell in Alberta.

SYNOPSIS Changes in the national productivity (gross national product per head of the population) have been assessed in order to derive a target figure for the required annual increase. The conclusion reached IS compared with the targets of the economic development programme of the Republic. Productivity and management structure in the gold mining industry is then analyzed together with investment in plant, machinery and equipment for rock handling purposes. The conclusion is drawn that productivity improvement does not appear to have accorded with the massive expenditures in plant and equipment, and in augmented management. The productivity of the manufacturing and construction sectors of the economy has been examined. The principal difficulty is that the main avenue of approach is the value of product divided by the total labour force. This introduces inflationary questions, and the use of a suitable deflator becomes of prime importance. Severa1 different methods of assessing the productivity improvement in the industrial sector have been used with what is regarded as a comparatively high degree of compatibility. Improvements in productivity in the manufacturing industry up to 1966 appear, from the information available, to have substantially exceeded comparable figures for the mining industry. There is however evidence that thereafter productivity of the manufacturing industry has not maintained this satisfactory rate of increase. If the economy is to achieve the planned rate of expansion, there is no doubt that greater attention to this aspect will be required in the future than has been accorded to it in the past.

The Mt. Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. The establishment of the world’s first Sub Level Shrinkage (SLS) mine from a tradition Sub Level Open Stoping operation has proven to be a geotechnical challenge which has required tailored solutions to overcome unique issues. This paper will be broken into two distinct sections that will outline: a brief overview of the mining method and how the SLS method was chosen; and how the SLS is managed and key geotechnical learnings. The story of the world’s first SLS originated from the need of a bulk mining method to ensure the viability of Mt. Wright into the future. Traditional bulk mining methods such as; Block or Sublevel Caving were originally ruled out due to the low natural ‘cavability’ of the orebody and the proximity of the orebody to existing major infrastructure (Decline, Ventilation Rises and Egresses). The first section of the paper will outline the key geotechnical information that helped decide the SLS method in addition to how continuous backfill influenced the design. The second section is intended to address issues that the geotechnical engineers encountered since the inception of the SLS. The feature topic of this section is mining induced stress. Like most bulk mining methods, Mt. Wright had success when the production front was running parallel to the stress (production front being ‘shadowed’ from the stress). This was until a design change, forced by a splitting ore body resulted in this shadowing effect becoming harder to achieve. As a result, rehabilitation and production hole re-drilling become a regular occurrence, which teamed with a strict set of access controls made the production cycle longer and harder to complete. Fine coal is defined as material with a maximum size of 1/2 in. Various methods for separate washing of such coal are discussed briefly because separate treatment can lead to a higher overall recovery of coal or to a product having a lower ash content.A felspar jig is discussed in detail because it is the method most recently adopted in Australia, and because it has the advantages of compactness, flexibility and automatic Gontrol, with minimum operator attention. This jig has a variety of adjustable controls to enable the desired results to be obtained from a wide range of coals and the general application of each control is discussed.The only separate treatment of fine coal in the Illawarra district is by felspar jigs on Bulli seam coal.INTRODUCTIONAll reasonably large Australian collieries now win coal by mechanical methods. but while mechanization leads to more economic production of high tonnages, it also changes the characteristics of the coal won. In particular there is an increased proportion of fines, and an increased ash and moisture content. However, specifications of coal for sale have become more stringent, and consumers now require coals in a definite size range with a lower and more uniform ash content, as well as with a low and uniform moisturecontent.These factors have led to the need to wash and grade run-of-mine coal at the pithead. In' plants where the whole of the run-of-mine coal is treated in a jig, some of the fine coal in the feed is beneficiated; the extent depending on factors such as the type of coal and the feed rate. However, for dense medium treatment, fine coal must first be screened out, and there may then be no washing of fine coal at all.

Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

Single crystals qf copper in "single slip" orientatiorzs have been deformed in compression. During defortnation all of the independent deformation parameters have been measured. These parameters consist of thefive strain components and three components descrihing the lattice rotation. By a finite strain analysis these pararmeters , forrming a deformation gradient martrix, are related to the amounts of slip on each of the twelve slip systems. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is about equal to the amount of primary slip. This is an order of magnitude larger than has been believed previoutsly. ACCORDING to early theory and experiments, when a single crystal of a fcc metal is deformed in tension or compression it should deform by slip on only one slip system until the stress axis reaches a symmetrical orientation.' However. the observation of a large increase in the secondary dislocation density during ..single slip" makes it clear that some slip does occur on secondary systems. Knowledge of the amount and distribution of this secondary slip is essential to a complete understanding of the mechanisms of single-crystal deformation. Ahlers and Haasen 2 and Mitchell and Thornton1 have tried to detect the amount of secondary slip in single crystals of silver and copper, respectively. Each simultaneously measured the angle A, between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and the length 1 of a gage section of the specimen after incremental amounts of deformation in tension. The measured A, was then compared with the theoretical single slip angle hp. given by sin Ap = j sin . hO where ?o was the initial angle between the tensile axis and the primary slip direction and lo was the initial gage length. In both sets of experiments a small but systematic difference between ?e and ?p was found. This difference must be due to the occurrence of secondary slip. However, as Mitchell and Thornton1 pointed out. nothing quantitative can be said about the amount and distribution of this secondary slip from the measurements that they made. The reason that no quantitative conclusions could be made is because no unique solution for the distribution of slip on the twelve fcc slip systems can be determined from only two measured deformation parameters such as A and 1. There are, in fact, eight independent macroscopic deformation parameters that can be measured when a single crystal undergoes a homogeneous deformation. Physically these can be thought of as the five finite strain components and the three angles describing the crystal lattice rotation. All eight of these parameters were measured by Taylor4,5 for aluminum deformed in tension and compression. At that time the concern was to show that slip occurs on {111 (110) systems in fcc metals, and the mathematics were not available to determine what slip distributions were compatible with the measurements. In this paper the mathematics6,7 are developed that allow the slip distribution to be determined from these measurable macroscopic deformation parameters. The analysis is applied to the measurements of the strain and lattice rotation of copper single crystals deformed in compression. The results show that the amount of secondary slip is an order of magnitude larger than had previously been thought. As part of a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates the thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to sulfur (S°). The research described herein is focused on the latter half of the process. It was demonstrated that calcium sulfide could be converted to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), and that ammonium bisulfide could be oxidized by air in the presence of a catalyst, to elemental sulfur, which was adsorbed on the catalyst. Two methods for recovering sulfur from the catalyst were developed: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and (2) leaching the sulfur from the catalyst with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Over 90 pct of the sulfur adsorbed on activated carbon (the catalyst) was recovered by both methods. Based upon the encouraging laboratory investigations, a hydrometallurgical scheme was proposed for the overall conversion of calcium sulfide to elemental sulfur.

The last 25 years have seen rapid expansion in the use of helical screw pile foundations and tiebacks for new and retrofit construction of buildings and earth retention structures. An estimated $100 million was spent in 2002 on helical foundations and tiebacks in the United States alone. While design information is available in the literature, information regarding quality control, inspection and performance monitoring is lacking. Recognition of at least one manufacturer's helical foundation material by the Uniform Building Code, Standard Building Code, and BOCA (all three codes now combined into the ICC International Building Code) has given added urgency to the dissemination of reliable and practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures. This paper describes a set of such procedures that have been followed for 17 years by engineers experienced in the industry who have directly installed or been involved in the installation of over 140,000 helical foundations and tiebacks in divers soil conditions for various types of structures, including earth retention structures. Topics covered include design responsibility, building code listings and requirements, manufacturer ISO certification, manufacturing process, material and installation specifications, installation contractor certification, field placement, installation procedures, field inspection, building code inspection and performance monitoring. The paper concludes with a step by step example of practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures on a typical helical foundation project.

Permanent ventilation controls such as stoppings, overcasts, and undercasts for use in coal mines are required to meet MSHA’s safety standards for fire endurance and flexural strength. Due to technological advances in materials and their design for use as ventilation controls, an engineering program was established to evaluate newer or “nontraditional” ventilation controls. The program is intended to assist manufacturers, enforcement personnel and mine operators in determining if “nontraditional” ventilation controls, for example plastic membrane construction and lightweight block, meet the prescribed safety standards. The program is presented with a description of required tests and examples of products evaluated.

The lack of technology for processing of sub-grade ore concentrates and intermediate products for extraction of Zn, Pb, Cu and precious metals at the metallurgical stage was a constraint for an increase in the production of these metals. The technology developed in the Gintsvetmet Institute is based on an improved electrothermal smelting process for treating calcined charge, ensuring thereby a reduction in power requirement and improving the environmental performance of the process. Electric smelting of sub-grade polymetallic concentrates produces lead bullion, to which the bulk of gold and silver reports, as well as well segregated matte and slag concentrating the bulk of zinc. Lead bullion and matte are commercial-grade products; zinc is recovered from high-grade (15% Zn) slag by slag fuming process. Reduced loss of precious metals in slag ensured by the given technology is attributed to the fact that the slag contacts with matte with low contents of gold, silver and lead, rather than with lead bullion. Limited amounts of off-gas typical of electrothermal processes ensure cost-effective operation of dust recovery devices and a reduction in emissions of harmful pollutants into the ambient air.

In Switzerland two major railway systems as shown below in Figure 1 has recently been completed or is under construction: ¦Lötschberg, south of Bern which was commissioned in 2007 ¦Gotthard, south of Zurich which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016The aim is to increase the transport capacity of the railway system and to transfer more transport of goods to the railway by offering transport of trailers and lorries on the new railway systems. It will have a positive environmental impact but also improve the congested traffic situation of the highways in north-south directionThe Gotthard tunnel is totally 57 km (35 mile) long and the Lötschberg tunnel is 35 km (22 mile) long. Both tunnel systems consist of two parallel single track tunnels connected with cross tunnels at every 333 m (1 093 ft). Additionally there are cross-over tunnels and caverns for installations and operation. In the Lötschberg tunnel, the majority of the excavation has been by Drill & Blast and in Gotthard tunnel the major part is being excavated by TBM.

This paper discusses the effects of seam inclination and lateral stresses on the stress distribution in pillars in inclined coal seams. The average pillar stress is a function of the overburden weight, the mine depth, the effective extraction ratio and the angle of seam inclination. Normal and shear stresses in the pillar are computed by numerical modeling. In medium dipping seams, leaving a pillar with its axis normal to the stratification causes a shearing stress concentration in the top and bottom corners of the pillar. This results in the pillar possibly becoming less stable in comparison to pillars in horizontal coal seams. Therefore, to reduce the stresses, it may be necessary to leave the pillar at an angle of b deviated from the normal axis to stratification. A mathematically approximate formula for determining b is proposed, and the results are confirmed by numerical modeling.
