The accurate prediction of the shaft capacity of drives piles in sand continues to present problems for foundation designers. Research in this field has been carried out for many years and has yielded a wide range of design approaches -some of which have been shown by recent experimental work to be based on questionable assumptions. This Paper reviews some of the current popular design methods for piles in sand in the context of recent information obtained from high quality field tests conducted by institutions such as Imperial College London. A database of driven piles in cohesionless soils has been compiled from well documented (and reliable) case histories that have been reported in the literature. The measured shaft capacities of the piles in this database are compared with predictions made by the various methods and an assessment is made of the predictive performance and reliability of each method

Copper converting is mostly performed in Peirce-Smith converters. The process is still very similar to the original one developed in the early 20th century. It is a batch process in a horizontal cylindrical reactor with air blowing via tuyeres along the length of the reactor side. The Peirce-Smith converter has its roots in Bessemer's inventions in the 1850's as he tested both horizontal and vertical vessels for steel converting. However, for steel making a vertical pear-shaped converter with air bottom-blowing was established. In the course of time, there was a distinct necessity for oxygen usage instead of air due to harmful effects of nitrogen to steel properties and its cooling effect. In-bath blowing of oxygen did not succeed, however, and top-blown oxygen converter with oxygen lance (LD or BOF) was first developed in he 1950's and emerged rapidly to a dominating position. Somewhat later oxygen bottom-blowing via special shrouded tuyeres was developed (OBM or Q-BOP) but has attained only fractional share. Bottom-blowing technique had, however, impact on the current combined blown converters which adopted the benefits of both top and bottom blowing. In copper converting Peirce-Smith type converters have kept their position until today although new processes have been introduced and at least few of them seem to be emerging. In one respect copper converting has a clear leading position i.e. in the progress of continuous converting processes (Mitsubishi, Ausmelt). These processes utilise top-blowing lances instead of in-bath blowing tuyeres. A different principle for continuous converting is flash converting by Kennecott Outokumpu, which makes smelting and converting independent of each others. Solid ground matte is used as a feed for flash converting in a reactor shaft similar to Outokumpu matte flash smelting. A comparable process has been presented by Inco too. The paper discusses principal physico-chemical and process technical similarities and differences in copper and steel converting. Although these processes are metallurgically quite different it seems that during the modem history of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, starting from the 1850's, the exchange of knowledge between these disciplines has been quite intensive. In long-term perspective, many similarities in the development can be found but also divergences due to different ambient circumstances.

Accurate measure of fragment size distribution is a key objective in all blasting and crushing operations. Several generic distribution functions have been devised to describe the degree of fragmentation for the representative range of fragments from selected measurements. The application of four distribution functions, i.e. Rosin-Rammler, Swebrec, Grady and Gilvarry, in describing fragment size distribution of impact-induced fragmentation of a limestone rock has been investigated. A modified Hopkinson Pressure Bar experimental set-up is used to control both impact velocity and energy input into the target rock. The feed size in the sample holder is varied from 6.35mm to 15.88mm in three ranges and the impact velocity up to 14m/s. The size distribution in the product is determined by sieve analysis for a range of impacts. The experimental results are fitted to the four distribution functions to examine their relative accuracy and reliability.

En el presente trabajo se propone una ecuación para estimar dicho esfuerzo en base a la concentración volumétrica del relave, basado en ensayos desarrollados en el Laboratorio Nacional de Hidráulica con muestras de dos depósitos de relaves de distintas minas polimetálicas y en estudios realizados por O’Brien y Julien (1988) con materiales granulares. La ecuación propuesta permitirá optimizar el diseño de sistemas de conducción de relaves y reducir costos de mantenimiento.

THE invention of the Bessemer converter process in 1856 added great impetus to the manufacture of steel and is one of the outstanding contributions to process metallurgy. Although the process of refining pig iron by passing air through the molten metal bears the name of Henry Bessemer, it should be mentioned in passing that William Kelley of Eddysville, Ky., worked on the process as early as 1847. Kelley was granted a patent on the process in 1857, inasmuch as he was able to prove priority in discovery.1 After considerable litigation in 1865 the respective interests of Kelley and Bessemer were combined. On Sept. 10, 1856, Robert Mushet of England obtained his first patent on the application of manganese to cast steel. Mushet anticipated trouble in purifying iron by passing currents of air through it. His patent specified that steel made in this way often contained flaws and was red short or cold short. Mushet understood the refining of pig iron into steel well enough to realize the difficulties likely to be encountered from oxidation of the iron. Mushet was not only an inventor but he was also an investigator. He understood the principle of selective oxidation which takes place in the converter process, arid he realized therefore that the remedy for over-oxidation was attainable if a suitable metal could be found at a reasonable cost and in sufficient quantities. His first experiments were made in small crucibles holding a few ounces of metal. Later his work was conducted on a larger scale and with complete success. Mine ventilation can be broadly defined as the branch of mining engineering primarily concerned with the controlled flow of air through mine airways to maintain an acceptable atmospheric environment wherever men work or travel underground. Martinson (1976) has defined three elements of mine ventilation, 1) an engineering element concerned with establishing quality control (removal of dust and gases), quantity control (regula¬tion of air direction and magnitude) and climatic conditioning (temperature-humidity control), 2) a biological element in which an understanding of biological response is used in assessing the mine environment, and 3) a philosophical element requiring judgements as to the degree of risk or worker discomfort that is socially acceptable. Most texts on ventilation, such as Hartman (1961), limit themselves to a discussion of the engineering element. Although also limiting his text to engineering control, Weeks (1928) thoughtfully addresses the other elements in the preface of his book where he states: "Life is brief and happiness elusive under the best of conditions; so beside the commercial aspect must be placed the humanitarian. Is it not reasonable that the operator should give his men a chance to spend their working hours in a comfortable environment, with the danger of sudden death or disability reduced as much as possible?" The statutory requirements of ventilation are, in most countries, established on the basis of biological response as determined by basic research or are dictated by social awareness, often touched off by major disasters, resulting in demands on regulatory bodies for more stringent requirements. Although other energy commodities have developed successful futures contracts, long-term contracts still dominate the coal market. To establish whether coal markets will develop in the same way, coal price and volume data are tested against a set of criteria considered to represent some of the factors contributing to the development of a successful futures contract. Coal meets only some of the criteria: market players are subject to little risk in quite a stable market, have strong preferences for the specific nature of long-term contracts and profit from product uniqueness, each trade being individually negotiated. Potential structural changes in the western European market are not felt to be sufficient to create demand for a coal futures contract, but an empirical model has been developed that could form the basis of a further study to predict the potential for success

THE compiler, or author, of the Probierbücblein is not known, and the date of its first printing is uncertain. It was obviously not written by an assayer who wished to give a coherent description of his craft for the instruction of others; this was left for Biringuccio first to do. It is easy to believe that originally the Probierbücblein was a random collection from various sources of information useful to an assayer, probably gathered by one of the profession for his own use. It must remain a matter of speculation whether this was shown to a printer, who recognized the opportunity to turn an honest penny and made an inept attempt to give the manuscript the appearance of a coherent account by writing a preface and arranging the various items in somewhat logical sequence, or whether the assayer him- self started this job and was prevented from finishing it. That some sections of the book, especially near the be ginning, present an almost continuous story, while others are chaotic in their arrangement; that several paragraphs are printed more than once in different places; that there are paragraph headings, for which the text was never written, or lost, followed by irrelevant information-all this seems evidence of a job unfinished and points to a publisher's offering for the public's quick money. The demand must have been brisk, for metal working was a profitable profession, and the jeweler who was working with metals but did not care to become completely trained in assay methods would jump at the chance of acquiring easy knowledge. Even the great Agricola has whole sections obviously plagiarized from the Probierbücblein. Neither Biringuccio nor Ercker shows any direct influence, though they and all subsequent metallurgists will in some degree be affected by

"This paper describes the ventilation system used in underground hard rock mines in Sweden and Finland, which is very different than the system used in other major mining countries such as Australia, Canada, South Africa, and USA. The system utilizes auxiliary fans with Variable Speed Drive to distribute primary airflow to working levels instead of regulators that are commonly used in other countries. Descriptions about Ventilation on Demand in this system and ventilation regulations in Sweden and Finland are presented in this paper. This paper also quantifies a comparison between the Nordic and the system used in other countries. KEYWORDS Auxiliary fan, Regulation, Ventilation on demand (VOD), Variable speed drive (VSD) INTRODUCTION The primary objective of an underground mine ventilation system is to provide sufficient airflow to dilute atmospheric contaminants that are produced by mining activities. Typically, a mine ventilation system consists of one to four primary fans, regulators to control primary airflow distribution to levels or panels, and auxiliary fans that distribute airflow to dead-end workings via ducts. Depending on circuit geometry, underground booster fans are sometimes used. This system is widely employed in many countries such as Australia, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, and South Africa. However, mines in Nordic countries such as in Sweden and Finland employ a different system, in which auxiliary fans instead of regulators are used to control primary airflow distribution, as well as distributing airflow to dead-end workings. This paper describes the general layout of Nordic ventilation system, its VOD and heating system, its comparison with the system that is widely used in other countries which is referred as “Non-Nordic ventilation system” in this paper, and the current ventilation regulations in Sweden and Finland. The comparison was quantified by doing simulations using Ventsim Design 5 software. DESCRIPTION OF NORDIC VENTILATION SYSTEM General System Layout Figure 1 shows a schematic of typical ventilation system used in Swedish and Finnish mines. The schematic was drawn by Franzen, Myran, Larsson, and Rustan from Stiftelsen bergteknik forskning (Swedish Rock Engineering Research Foundation) and the English translation is written next to the Swedish terminologies. The system is generally a push-pull system. None of Swedish and Finnish mines use exhaust system. As shown in Figure 1, the primary airflow is distributed to levels by auxiliary fans that are bolted to a bulkhead located in the access to intake raise/shaft. These intake fans are attached to ventilation ducts that distribute airflow to all working faces. The exhaust auxiliary fans, which are not attached to any ducts and also are bolted to a bulkhead located in the access to exhaust raise/shaft, then flow the exhaust airflow into the exhaust shaft. A small quantity of this exhaust air is directed into the ramp, which acts as another main exhaust airway. The deepest level is also equipped with booster fan(s) that draw air from the intake shaft/raise and direct it into the ramp to provide fresh air in the ramp. There is no free split in this system. Figure 2 shows a schematic of a level ventilation layout in the Nordic system. Figure 3 shows a photo of these auxiliary fans."

Discussion M. J. Martinson* (Associate Member): This is another interesting paper in the series which the Human Sciences Laboratory is publishing on the physiological cost of the more strenuous manual tasks performed underground. As a mining engineer-albeit presently an academic one -this contributor is more concerned with the practical significance of the study in the field of stope cleaning than with physiological niceties, but before discussing some of the practical issues raised by the paper perhaps the authors would care to reply to lay comment on three physiological matters. Firstly, in two places the authors make statements to the effect that the maximum oxygen intake of 'average' (sic) Bantu mine workers is 3.0 l/min. What do the authors mean by 'average'? Maximum oxygen intake in the individual is probably some function of inter alia age, physical fitness, state of health, ambient partial pressure of oxygen, diurnal and/or seasonal changes in metabolism, and possibly cumulative exposure to dust and other occupational contaminants. Since maximum oxygen intake is apparently such an important quality in manual labourers we ought to have a clear picture of its distribution in the entire labour force, and also know precisely how the individual's quantum is affected by factors such as those mentioned above. Secondly, arising out of the same statements and ignoring the reservation implicit in the previous paragraph, is it correct to say that the 'average' Bantu mine worker has a maximum intake of 3.0 l/min? In the August 1966 issue of the South African Journal of Science four of the present co-authors reported the mean maximum oxygen intake of a random sample of 338 Bantu recruits of different tribes to be 2.63 l/min with a standard deviation of 0.542 l/min, and these figures were repeated in a paper published in the November 1968 issue of this Journal. Admittedly the mean maximum oxygen intake of the six subjects used in the present study was 3.05 l/min, but since they were selected on the grounds of previous shovelling experience they can hardly be regarded as being 'average' recruits. Thirdly, it seems to me that the authors are perhaps a little uncritical in their acceptance of the '50 per cent of maximum oxygen intake' level of activity for endurance work. I am not unmindful of the evidence upon which this level is based, but I suggest that the evidence is at best tenuous and that the whole topic of fatigue and 'optimum' levels of productivity under conditions of high muscular activity and considerable psychological stress is a lot more complicated than would appear from the authors' ready acceptance of the 50 per cent level. Under present working conditions the question is largely rhetorical because it would need an army of supervisors to ensure that all members of a typical gang work at 'optimum' levels throughout the shift, but if individual performance should ever become more readily determinable the issue might become crucial to management and malayisha alike. So much for physiological matters; now a few random thoughts on some wider, practical issues raised by the paper. In the paragraph headed Material the statement is made that 'The mixture (of fine, medium-sized and bigger rocks) was considered to be representative of an average underground rock sample'. Elsewhere in the report the authors specifically draw attention to the effect of particle size on the oxygen consumption of men shovelling graded material, and intuitively one imagines that the size distribution of the material being shovelled would be highly significant in a study such as this. Presumably the authors were forced to assess size distribution subjectively because of the lack of objective data on the subject, and possibly the necessity for this assumption highlights how little we know quantitatively about any of the variables in stope cleaning systems. In this connection it may be remarked that although the present study was largely designed to show how dip and stoping width effect energy expenditure in shovelling, no data are given-nor, probably, are they available-to show how the industry's stoping tonnage is distributed in terms of these two factors. It seems to me that if the mining industry seriously hopes to improve stope productivity it must start by measuring the basic variables in existing systems. Elaborating somewhat on the previous paragraph, there also seems to be a tremendous gap between the present study-and its predecessors-and the prospect of gainfully using the information so carefully garnered by the authors. It would be reassuring to hear from the authors that their work on the physiological aspects is being integrated in some master plan for increasing productivity of manual labour. This I fear is not the case, and if productivity has changed at all in recent years I would hazard a guess that the change has been brought about by random factors rather than by systematic engineering design. The Human Sciences Laboratory has worked extensively in stopes in the past, and possibly the time has come when it should widen the ambit of its operations to include engineering-type analyses of cleaning systems, with particular emphasis on the economics of rapid cleaning by manual labour. Perhaps experiments could be conducted with stakhanovite-type gangs consisting of men selected for their high maximum oxygen intake and superior motivation; these men might be offered special incentives in the shape of extra pay

"Minera Penmont, at La Herradura, is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V., and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with two-stage crushing and heap leaching facility, the gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130,000 gold ounces per year, and treatment capacity is 22,000 tonnes/day. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to the coarse visible gold, in some coarser particles ranging from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols where established during exploration and prior to starting up operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. But, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block made of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to starting up operations (“existing”) and the new protocol (“leaching”). In the “existing” protocol, subsampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying is used to estimate the gold content, on a 50 g sample. In the “leaching” protocol a 12,000 g sample was bottle rolled cyanide leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this “rotary sampling” protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the “leaching” protocol.Test results were compared in three groups < 0.30 g/t (below cut-off), 0.30 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall. Results show that the protocol established prior to starting up operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

An analysis is presented to show that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals can be rationalized in terms of flow mechanisms operative during the rolling process. First, a general approach used by Calnan is followed, where the rolling process is approximated on the basis of two axes, p and Q. In this treatement there are two separate sets of slip systems, one for each axis, and it is shown that a homogeneous rotation can he achieved by restricting the slip systems for the two axes to share common slip directions Then, two criteria are used to select the active slip systems for the axis P: they must have relatively high resoloed shear stresses, and dislocations on these slip systems must interact attractively in order to lower total energy content Finally, a method of analysis is introduced to locate the end position of an axis by knowing its acti7.e slip systems. The result of the analysis indi- cates that two main flow mechanisms operate in fcc metals. The ideal orientation derived from one oj-them is (8 13 21) (21 8 13) which is very close to the (358) (523) orientation observed experimentally on the rolling texture of copper. This flow mechanism should only he operative in metals containing dislocations extended into partials separated by less than five times their lattice parameter. The ideal orientations derived from the other flow mechanism are a combination of (1 10} (112) and a spread of orientations with (110) parallel to the rolling plane. This type of ideal orientations corresponds to those observed in the rolling texture of silver 30:70 brass, and binary alloys with high alloying content. This flow mechanism should be operative in any fcc metal regardless of its stacking-fauIt energy. Introductory: In dealing with a topic so large, one that involves such a multiplicity of details, and that also has certain controversial aspects, it is quite impracticable within the limits of this article to touch upon many most interesting phases and incidents. Also, to bring out the actual truth, it is necessary to make certain categorical statements. The writer believes that all such statements made here-under are supported by facts. Again, however, it is out of the question to cite all the proof. The writer, therefore, will gladly answer any pertinent criticisms or questions and thus supplement the unavoidable brevity of this paper. Controversial points will take care of themselves. Historical: For present purposes the history of gold mining in Nova Scotia may best be summed up in a very few paragraphs, in some of which the writer quotes freely from recent reports compiled by himself. The first material discovery of gold was made in the year 1860. As this and rapidly succeeding discoveries were looked upon as bonanzas, the claims were fixed at a size of 20 by 50 feet, and a yearly rental of $20 was charged. Later the claims (areas) were increased in size to 50 by 150 feet. In the year 1866 a temporarily successful company, so we are informed by a contemporary writer, owned a mill and mining plant worth $6,000. As this fact is cited with admiration, it is apparent that most of the mining and milling must have been done in a very primitive manner indeed.

Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

The debate on the mechanism of adsorption of gold and silver di-cyanide onto activated carbon could be divided into two schools of thought. On the one hand, it has been proposed that the combined effects of electrostatic and chemical interaction between the activated carbon surface and adsorbing gold di-cyanide anion results in the adsorption of the latter. On the other hand the `ion-pair&apos; adsorption reaction mechanism has been vigorously advocated as the dominant mechanism responsible for the adsorption of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon. It is maintained that gold is adsorbed onto the carbon surface as the neutral ion-pair [M"+][Au(CN)z ]". Adsorption is viewed as the result of mainly the chemical interaction while electrostatic interactions are neglected. The validity of the `ion-pair&apos; adsorption mechanism may be challenged on a number of counts. However, the alternative mechanism (based on aqueous surface chemistry principles) has not gained general acceptance yet, because it has not been applied widely enough to explain the different adsorption phenomena associated with gold di-cyanide on activated carbon. In the present study the case in favour of an adsorption mechanism based on general aqueous surface chemistry principles is presented. A model framework is developed for the adsorption reaction mechanism of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon which incorporates the effects of chemical and electrostatic interactions between the dissolved species, the aqueous solution and the carbon surface. This model is then employed to explain a wide variety of reported adsorption phenomena for gold di-cyanide on activated carbon, such as the effects of pH, the adsorption of different metal cyano complexes, ionic strength, and type and concentration of cations in solution. In addition the effects of cyanide and dissolved oxygen concentration were investigated. No ready explanation, in terms of aqueous surface chemistry principles, is yet available for the switch in adsorption behaviour that agrees with ion exchange to ion-pair adsorption with increasing ionic strength.

Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.

In its early stage of copper solvent extraction development, SX plants were designed in a series configuration and gradually the copper industry reduced staging and trains for keeping capital investments reasonably low. At a later date of its development, series parallel configuration was applied in some copper SX plants, particularly for increasing copper production at low copper tenor in pregnant leach solution. A gap between series and series parallel configuration had been observed for years. Conventional SX plants in series configuration frequently do not have the flexibility for maintaining designed or expected production level, whenever copper concentrations in pregnant leach solutions are getting low, whereas series parallel flow schemes almost require to double SX feed flows for achieving optimum results. A combined SX configuration breaks the gap and its application potentials are explained.
