TO recover the remaining ore tonnages along the south side of the Inspiration orebody, the company began open-pit operations in early 1948 in addition to underground mining. Due to the differences in elevation between the orebody and the existing ore handling and treating plants, the truck haulage operation is up hill. Road grades were established at 7 pct maximum.

Electrode Columns are commonly used in electric furnaces to deliver current and regulate furnace power to the smelting or melting process. Hatch has developed an innovative patent-pending system for lowering ("slipping") and/or raising ("back-slipping") the electrodes through an electrode column, without requiring the release of any clamping devices. All clamping forces are applied by springs. Unlike systems employing hydraulically applied clamping forces, (e.g., water bladders) the spring system is failsafe. Its inherent simplicity virtually eliminates the need for maintenance. The Hatch system is particularly applicable to Soderberg electrodes, and comprises two axially movable slipping clamps and a stationary power clamp, each of which apply a distributed, radial clamping force to the electrode. The magnitudes of the slipping sleeves' clamping forces and sequencing of their axial movements are selected such that the slipping clamps, in conjunction with the weight of the electrode, provide slipping or back slipping without release of any clamping force.

"The effect of red mud on the melting behavior of ferronickel slag was investigated by a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Melting and softening of slag samples fluxed with different amount of red mud was examined by in-situ visualization technique at temperature range from 1400 to 1550°C. FactSageTM 7.0 was used for the thermodynamic calculation of multi component system of ferronickel slag and red mud. Liquid phase area was extended to lower temperature by adding red mud indicating its suitability as a flux material. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the dependency of the phase changes on the red mud content. Microscopic observation by scanning electron microscope (SEM / EDX) clarified the phase transformations from olivine to spinel along with red mud additions.INTRODUCTION Ferronickel smelting by submerged arc furnace (SAF) is an energy intensive process performed at high temperature range 1500–1600°C. During the smelting process of saprolitic nickel laterite ore with a nickel content of 2.2–2.3 pct, a large quantity of ferronickel slag is being produced that account for 97 pct of ore charged. To achieve ferronickel grade of 15–20 pct Ni, electrical energy of 80 to 85 MW is used for the melting and reduction of nickel oxide (NiO) and iron oxide (FeO) in the ore (Rodd et al., 2010). Unreduced components, mostly MgO, SiO2 and partly FeO are removed from the furnace in a liquid slag form by a tapping operation. Due to the high melting temperature, forsterite (Mg2SiO4) based slag containing approximately 10 pct FeO requires typical process temperature of 1600°C. Flux in metallurgical process is a medium that decreases melting and operating temperatures while it increases fluidity of the liquid slags. Calcite and fluorite are examples of flux materials used for the ironmaking, steel refining and continuous casting process. Oxide systems based on CaO - CaF2 - SiO2 - Al2O3 - MgO cover most of the slag composition in ferrous metallurgy accordingly. Crucial operating factors for ironmaking and steelmaking slags are basicity (typically CaO/SiO2 ratio), viscosity and impurity levels. These are extensively controlled by the fluxes. General metallurgical fluxes such as limestone, dolomite and calcium fluoride are abundant in nature and supplied to steel mills at low prices. Meanwhile, in copper flash smelting process, silica is supplied with copper concentrate to remove iron oxide (FeO) generated from sulfide oxidation. FeO - SiO2 binary system formulates eutectic area at 25–38 pct of silica that has low melting temperature below 1205°C. Fayalitic system (Fe2SiO4) that has low viscosity (0.1 Pa·s) (Park et al., 2011) facilitates easy separation of slags from molten sulfide mattes. Recently, copper plants actively utilize recycled raw materials as a flux. Various recycled glasses are ground and fed to copper smelting process as a partial replacement of silica ore. Applying industrial wastes to smelting processes is advantageous since the operators can reduce the production cost remarkably. Not to mention the consumption of recycled materials can ultimately minimize the environmental risks and the waste management costs. The authors, therefore, investigated the reasonable waste materials that can be effectively used for ferronickel smelting process. Prerequisites for potential fluxing materials are non-recyclable property, low transportation cost and excellent performance as a flux."

A knowledge of the principles of punctuation is essential to effective and intelligible writing, for the ease and pleasure of the reader, and even his understanding, may depend upon the choice and the placing of punctuation marks. To 'punctuate' is to mark with stops or points; the word comes from the medieval Latin punctuare (punctuatus), which in turn is derived from the Latin punctum, a point. The purpose of punctuation is to show the manner in which the writing is to be understood; to indicate the relations between parts of a sentence and between successive sentences. To some extent "it does for the eye what vocal stress does for the ear", but especially it marks logical relations. Some punctuation marks, such as those indicating admiration, exclamation, and interrogation, are rhetorical as well as grammatical, but most of the common ones are logical or grammatical. My discussion will be confined to grammatical punctuation in ordinary writing. "The problem of punctuation in text matter", as George Summey * says, "is to employ words, points, and paragraph breaks in such a way as to achieve at the same time clearness, proper distribution of emphasis, and the desired kind of movement." The criticism of the punctuation of a sentence or of a group of sentences is not final until the context, within the paragraph, is read. A paragraph is a sentence or a group of' sentences forming an independent unit of the composition; it represents a unit of thought. A multiplicity of paragraphs produces a choppy effect; on the other hand, paragraphs of excessive length are tiresome, because the belaboring of one unit of thought wearies the reader. Debswana together with ADP as their design partner have embarked on an RDP project at Jwaneng Mine. The objective of the project is to install a 2 million ton per annum mineral processing plant that will fast track the recovery of diamonds from the Debswana tailings resource to ensure maximum return on investment for the company. Due to the prevailing economic conditions Debswana has had to review the way they used to build plants in the past and consider simple, fast and effective ways of doing things. The rapid deployment plant concept is therefore the most suitable means of achieving this objective. Debswana is also considering an operating partner who will operate far more efficiently and cheaply compared to the larger more cumbersome and less agile Debswana.

The US Bureau of Mines undertook a study of those factors influencing worker escape from an outby coal mine fire. The results of this investigation were two-fold. First, those factors affecting escape from a mine fire were defined, and second, the relationships between these factors were identified. Although the individual components had been studied before, little information was available on their interdependence. Fault tree analysis was used to evaluate the miner escape scenario. After constructing the fault tree, a two-phase analysis of the tree was conducted. During the first phase, the minimal cutsets of the fault tree were identified and ranked. These sets were the smallest sequence of events leading to fatalities during the fire. This ranking revealed that reduced evacuation delays, improved self-rescuer training, and improved stopping construction were important in controlling fatalities during escape from the mine fire. The second phase involved additional analyses of the fault tree. These evaluations were started by first determining occurrence probabilities for each event in the fault tree. Two types of sensitivity analyses were then conducted. The first analysis dealt with changes in event probabilities and their impact on the likelihood of fatalities. The final sensitivity analysis considered dramatic reductions in the probability of fire fatalities. This revealed what event probability values were necessary to reach this level. These results have revealed various remedial actions that could be used to improve the survivability of an outby mine fire.

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over-burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

"Introductory and GeneralTHE Northwest Territories comprise all that region -of Canada lying between Yukon Territory and Hudson bay and north of the 60th parallel of latitude. For purposes of mine .administration the Territories are divided into three districts: Yellowknife, McKenzie, and Arctic and Hudson Bay. Mining recording offices for the respective districts are maintained at Yellowknife, Fort Smith, and Ottawa. The mine inspection for the entire area, and also for Yukon Territory, comes under the Federal Department of Resources and Development. Two mining inspectors are responsible for these inspections: the Chief Inspector of Mines, with headquarters in Ottawa, who makes trips into the north at least twice a year, and a Resident Inspector, stationed in Yellowknife.The Resident Inspector is constantly making inspections of active properties. This involves a considerable amount of air travel as the region is large and properties are widely scattered.Although there has been prospecting and staking of claims in each of the three districts of the Northwest Territories, actual mining has been conducted only in the Yellowknife district, and for purposes of this paper we are solely concerned with that district."

INTRODUCTION Underground fires continue to be one of the most serious hazards to life and property in the mining industry. Although underground mines are analogous to high-rise buildings where persons are isolated from immediate escape or rescue, application of technology to locate and control fire hazards while still in their controllable state is slow to be implemented in underground mines. Even in large surface structures such as hotels, often only fire protection systems which meet minimal laws are implemented due to the high cost of adding extensive extinguishing systems, isolation barriers, alternate ventilation, escape routes and alarm systems. Incomplete and ineffective protection occasionally is evidenced where costs would not seem to be a factor, such as the $211 million MGM Grand Hotel fire November 21, 19801. Paramount in increasing fire safety and decreasing the threat of serious fire is early warning followed by proper decision analysis to perform the correct action. However, very complex fire situations can be produced in structures such as high-rise buildings and underground mines simply because of the distances between the numerous fire-potential locations and fire safe areas. Other complexities arise when normal activities occur that emit products of combustion signaling a fire condition to a sensitive fire/smoke sensor. For example, the operation of diesel equipment or the performance of regular blasting can produce combustion products that reach the sensitive alarm points of many sensors2. Smoke detectors for surface installations provide fire warning when occupants are at a distant location or when sleeping, thus greatly reducing injuries and property damage. However, when installed in the harsh environments of underground mines, fire and smoke detection equipment soon becomes inoperative, unreliable, or requires excessive maintenance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has performed many studies and tests to improve fire and smoke protection for underground mine workers3. This paper describes several USBM safety programs which included in-mine testing with mine fire and smoke sensors, telemetry and instrumentation to develop recommendations for improving mine fire safety. It is hoped that the technology developed during these programs can be added to other programs to provide the mining industry with the necessary fire safety facts. By recognizing fire potentials and being provided with cost-effective, proven components that will perform reliably under the poor environmental conditions of mining, mine operators can provide protection for their working life and property equal to that which they provide for themselves and their families at home. The basis of this report is two USBM programs for fire protection in metal and nonmetal mines4,5 and one coal program6. The data was collected beginning in May 1974 and continuing through the present with underground tests of a South African fire system installed at Magma Mine in Superior, Arizona, and a computer-assisted, experimental system at Peabody Coal Mine in Pawnee, Illinois. The conduct of each program was as follows: • Define the problem and its magnitude in the industry • Develop concepts to solve or diminish the problem • Review available hardware or systems approaches to fit the concepts • Install and demonstrate the performance of a prototype system through fire tests in an operating mine. MINE FIRE FACTS Whether in coal or metal and nonmetal mines, the potential severity of fire hazard is directly related to location. As shown in Figure 1, fire in intake air at zones A, B, C or D can cause contamined air to route throughout the mine quickly if not detected, isolated or rerouted. Causes and location of former metal and nonmetal fires are represented in Table 1; the cause and location of fatalities and injuries is shown in Table 2. Coal-related fires and their impact on deaths and injuries are graphed in Figure 2; their locations are described in Table 37. Significantly the table shows that the hazard to personnel was three times greater for fires occurring in shaft or slope areas, and the percentage of deaths and injuries was four times that of other areas. Number of Persons Affected A 129-mine sample indicated that from 8 to 479 employees per shift work in underground metal and nonmetal mines, and that deeper mines have larger populations, as shown in Figure 3. Coal mining relates similar employment, and a 16-state sample of 670 mines employing at least 25 persons shows the distribution in Figure 4. Drift mines accounted for 58 percent of the sample but employ only 45 percent of the underground workers.

IN speaking of immaterial problems of industry I am using the word immaterial in its original sense, not consisting of matter; not in its derived sense, unimportant. There is nothing of a paradox in saying that immaterial problems are the most important in human life, for His a matter of everyday observation that much of the news in the daily papers, and most of the world's best literature and drama, deal with human conduct that has for its motive forces that are but little concerned with material things. The engineer's preoccupation with physical forces, in extending his control over them, has not blinded him to the impor-tance of forces that, for want of a better word, I call immaterial; but he has considered that dealing with the one is his job and the other is not. All the evidence of the past decade indicates that the latter are so in-extricably interwoven with the former in modern in-dustrial life that the engineer will have to concern himself with them whether he wants to or not. Some of the most important of the problems arising from the action of these forces relate to the mental hygiene of the workers in industry. Mental hygiene in industry was concisely defined, in terms of the best present knowledge, by Dr. C. Macfie Campbell, speaking last April before the executive com-mittee of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, and as his statement can scarcely be bettered, I quote it below: "The term mental hygiene is apt to appear vague. In 1938 Ralston4 reviewed the many attempts to find a satisfactory collector for the separation of cassiterite from its ores and in 1944 Dean and Ambrose2 summarized some further attempts. Generally, soaps and amines are effective but nonselective collectors. We have discovered that reagents containing either the polar group — SO4- or — SO3- are excellent collectors for cassiterite and promise to be selective. The response to these reagents of cassiterite and of minerals commonly associated with it was studied, using the captive-bubble technique. Using these fundamental data, the practicability of separation and concentration of tin was investigated by flotation tests in a 2000-gram Denver cell. Experimental Methods Reagents All inorganic reagents were of Analar grade. The preparation and purification of sodium cetyl sulphate, cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide, laurylamine and cetylamine have been previously described.5 The other collectors were commercial surface-active agents, which were used without purification. Tests Captive-bubble Tests and Cylinder Flotation Tests have been previously de- scribed.5,10 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible, by a cross, and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, and the experimental results are indicated by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solutions in which flotation in a cell would be possible but many factors other than those considered in these the determine recovery and grade of a given mineral in practice. The mining industry has experienced a general trend toward an increasing number of longwall operations, an increasing percentage of underground coal being mined by longwalls, and increasing productivity from the longwalls. Longwall operators have not yet reached a state of mining euphoria. Competitiveness both within the industry and from alternate fuel sources is forcing continued pursuit of higher productivities and lower costs. The following graphics present trends in the industry. Longwall mines, as defined for this presentation, are those reportedly having longwall installations in each of the respective years. Production from both the continuous miner and longwall units is included in the longwall mines. Non-Longwall mines are all other underground mines. Productivity calculations are based on total employee-hours associated with the operation.

At the Q. I. T. ilmenite smelter, nine electric furnaces produce titania slag and iron At high power levels, a furnace requires either a slag or an iron tap approximately once an hour, using rail cars as slag receptacles and ladles for iron. The correct scheduling of taps is an important operational tool due to peak power load and operational considerations. Over recent years, large increases in furnace capacity have imposed severe strains on the product handling facilities. This situation results in loss of production when several taps are bunched, because of an in- ability to handle many taps simultaneously. An on-line computer program has been developed to generate schedules for tapping a single furnace. By improved scheduling, this program can en- large the tonnage of each tap and minimize the number of taps, while reducing traffic congestion and unit cost s. Future plans call for extension of this technique to all nine furnaces with addition of a master scheduling program to optimize the overall traffic flow in the smelter aisle.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

A mineralogical investigation of the main causes of refractoriness of some metalurgicaly complex gold ores in South Africa is reported. It is shown that this refractoriness is related to the presence of submicroscopic gold, carbonaceous material, pyrhotite, and base-metal sulphides. Gold ores can be classified according to their content of these components. Electron-microprobe analysis shows that gold occurs in arsenopyrite and pyrite, the gold contents of which can be up to 2700 gft. The gold and arsenic contents of these minerals are closely corelated. Furthermore, within zoned arsenopyrite grains, the concentration of gold closely folows that of arsenic. Mossbauer spectroscopy caried out on samples of concentrate from the Barberton area indicates that the submicroscopic gold within the sulphides is in a non-metalic form. The mineralogical examination of beneficiation products is important, since it sheds light on some fundamental aspects of the behaviour of the ore and gangue components during milling and flotation. Such basic information will lead ultimately to a better understanding of the problems in the beneficiation of these ores. Investigations have shown that the overmiling of the auriferous arsenopyrite and the disseminated nature of the sulphide mineralization are the main problems during beneficiation.

It is generally considered that quench-aging is the result of precipitation of carbide and nitride particles from supersaturated solid solution, while strain-aging results from the segregation of carbon and nitrogen atoms to dislocations.1-9 The rate of strain-aging is controlled primarily by the amount of carbon and nitrogen in solution and the temperature. "FIRST OF ALL I should like to express to the members my sincere thanks for having had the privilege of serving them as President during the year now ending, to the Council for their guidance, and to the Secretary-Treasurer for his untiring efforts on both the Society's and my behalf during my year of office.During the .past five years the Canadian •Coal picture has changed considerably. In the West, production has been almost halved and many mines have been closed, due to the development and expansion of oil and natural gas industries, which, with some imported residual oil -on the Pacific coast -have provided competition which has been impossible to meet. The two major railway companies have embarked on an oil-burning and dieselization .programme and with this has .been lost one of the largest available markets for coal. Natural gas pipe-line installations still further threaten the remaining outlets for Western coal.In the East, retention of markets has also been a •problem, due to the intense competition provided by imported American •coal and the importation of residual oil.Because of cost it is impossible for central industrial Canada to be supplied with .coal from the Maritimes and markets are, therefore, restricted to fringe areas in Ontario and Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces.The dieselization programme of the Canadian National Rail ways has meant the loss of a large market for Nova Scotian coal and it is fair to assume that within a comparatively short time the market will be completely lost."

Much data and experience has been accumulated, especially in the last 5 or 6 years, to show that modern roof trusses, both of the Birmingham type and the bolt-and-channel type, perform well to support certain kinds of coal mine roof. For some time now, roof trusses of the Birmingham type have been effective in controlling thick shale roof, which tends to sag and fall over a period of about eight weeks. These falls leave dame-shaped cavities which are reminiscent of the pressure arch theory of roof failure. Lately there has also been significant interest in supporting some longwall panel entries with channel and-bolt systems. These systems utilize two vertical center bolts and two 45 degree end bolts through a heavy gage channel. Both types of truss systems have long bolts, which require 8 to 9 Foot holes on a 45 degree angle, and point anchor resin bolts, which utilize a 2 or 3 foot rebar grouted in a thin annulus of polyester resin. Consequently, many coal mining people have been impressed with the very good anchorage characteristics and tensionability features of these systems. However, the same people have been proportionately dismayed to find that very often the most difficult part of introducing a trussing program to a mine is deciding on the machine specifications which determine the truss installation rate. The purpose of this paper is to indicate aspects of truss bolter design and use which are not shared by roofbolter design and its vertical pattern of bolts. Of the two types of drill units conventionally accepted, arm feed units and mast units, only one 15 judged suitable. While the arm feed unit offers low collapsed height with a long drill feed length, a great attribute for low seam use, it has not lent itself to being rolled over to a 45 degree angle. One reason for this inability is that many items which are conventionally mounted on the arm feed unit cannot be allowed to rotate with the unit. These items include drilling controls, tool Cray, lights, canopy or safety post, panic bar, and stab jack(s). If these items were independent of the arm feed drilling unit, they would have to be out of the way of the boom arms, links, and feed cylinder as the unit moves. To ease this problem, the arm feed unit can be made very short and even mounted across the machine. However, the resulting short feed length is undesirable. Several short drill steel extensions are required to drill a relatively long hole, making this procedure time-consuming as well as increasing the likelihood of drilling a crooked hole. Another reason for abandonment of the arm feed unit is that a very stiff drill guide (or "centralizer") is required to start the hole. Using the mast tilt control, the roof bolter operator will force the bit against the roof and will rotate the bit without feeding to cut sideways into the roof to form a hole face. Omission of this step often results in the skidding of the bit toward the rib. To date, no such sturdy drill guide has been designed for an arm feed drill unit. The mast style unit has been the most successful design for angle drilling. It is easily rolled over to a 45 degree angle or to 90 degrees and, on single head models, often has been made to roll through 180 degrees. The mast style is compact, in plain view and is easily fitted with heavy duty manual or hydraulically operated drill guides. It can be mounted directly on a machine chassis, or onto a swinging boom, or onto a slider arrangement in a broad variety of configurations which will accommodate controls, tool trays, stab and roof support jacks, lights, canopies, and panic bars. The only significant difficulty with mast drilling units occurs in lower mining heights when desirable low mast height is accompanied by undesirable short feed length. While the lead extension in the drill string can be as large as the mining height will allow, a short feed length will permit only the use of shorter middle extensions and drivers, and perhaps will. require the use of two different length wrenches. The associated problem is the relatively short distance from the drillhead to the drillguide. This distance is further shortened when raising the drillhead to get the bit to the roof. One might keep longer lead extensions on the machine; drill a vertical pocket for the bit, starting the angle hole at this pocket; or modify the mast. If the mast is made so that the distance from the drillhead to the drillguide remains constant while the mast extends, after which the drillhead travels up the mast, the shorter mast can be made to start the hole more easily. However, short teed length will still result in longer drilling time. It is obvious from these points that a proper choice of mast is simply the highest one which will be moved easily in the given mining height.
