South Africa is a semi arid, water scarce country that has undergone recent major political and social transformation. This transformation has ensured that water management has become a primary environmental concern in the South African mining industry, raising the status of water from an ancillary service to a fundamental factor in mine planning. The coal mining industry has been involved in the development of integrated catchment management plans since the late-1980s when a series of initiatives commenced in catchments where collieries operated. The plans focused attention on water supply and water demand management, the equitable access to water supplies, and intersectoral approaches to decision making, before the promulgation of new legislative and policy frameworks. Development of an integrated watershed management plan for the Olifants River basin, located in the Mpumalanga province, commenced in 1990. The Olifants River is an international river basin of 54 570 square kilometres and shared by South Africa and Mozambique. The upper watershed, locally called the Witbank Dam catchment, will be the focus of this paper. It has an area of 3400 square kilometres and is the major coal mining, power generating, and maize-growing region of the country. The processes embodied in the integrated watershed management plan had no formal guidelines but rather developed in an ongoing fashion over time. The plan commenced with a situation analysis involving the major stakeholders that identified principal technical shortfalls. These shortfalls were investigated under the guidance of multisectoral committees. The Olifants River Forum was started to extend awareness of the initiatives on an informal level throughout the whole watershed. The results of the investigations enabled water quality guidelines to be established for the upper catchment. To achieve the guideline levels additional initiatives were developed including a scheme to manage mine water discharges into the river system, the development of a standard four-step water management process, investigation and development of innovative mine water treatment processes, specifically sulfate reduction technologies, the use of gypsiferous mine water for irrigation, river and dam hydrological models, groundwater models and biomonitoring. Significant outcomes from the process have been achieved including the improvement in water quality in the Witbank Dam catchment. Equally significant have been the development of partnerships between businesses and between businesses and the community specifically in the use of mine water for irrigation. The plan realised a number of requirements for success including, the development of trust, openness and transparency with information, the essential need for consultation and negotiation and the involvement of third parties to validate information. The future still holds the potential for disputes between upstream and downstream water users but understanding, transparency and accountability between all players have, and will in future, enable the matching of the increasing demands on a scarce water resource to the needs of all.

Problems with the cyanidation of copper-gold ores Copper-rich gold ores are becoming increasingly important both within Australia and overseas (Dayton, 1982; Deng and Muir, 1994; Muir et al, 1993; Sceresini and Staunton, 1991; Solis, Hefter and May, 1995; Wall, Hornby and Sethi, 1987). In Australasia alone over 30 copper-gold deposits have been reported (Muir et al, 1993). Table 1 lists several of the deposits that have been processed. Aboue 950°C the Nb-Zr system consists of a completely miscible bcc solid solution, commonly called the phase. Between 950 and 600°C, and between 20 and 85 pct Nb, the phase deconlposes, after sunciently long times, into two bcc solid solutions. The pct Zr alloys are conveniently descibecl with T-T-T (time-temperature-transformation) curves having a nose at about 2 hr at 700°C. The reaction rate varies only slowly with zirconium content and negligibly with oxygen contanzination; it is speeded up by a factor of 10 to 15 by 90 pct cold ulork and slowed dou by n factor oj 10 to 30 by a two-hundrecljold increase in grain size. Nb-r alloys with compositions between 40 and 85 pct Nb have been the basis for the majority of commercially important superconducting materials. In part because of their commercial promise, more is known about these alloys than about most other high-field superconducting materials. At the same time, there is considerable disputed or incomplete metallurgical information. For example, although Rogers and tkins&apos; indicate a monotectoid reaction at approximately 600°C and a two-phase 01 + 0, field extending between 20 and 85 pct Nb and to a maximum of 95OGC, erhout&apos; has reported that this entire region would be a single homogeneous B were it not for oxygen contamination. Again, although it has been shown that relatively short-time heat treatments in the vicinity of 700CZ significantly improve the ability of short wire samples to carry high currents in high magnetic fields at 4.2K, these observations have never been fully correlated with the structural change or changes occurring during the anneal. We intend to investigate in detail the effect of metallurgical variables, including heat treatment, on the superconducting properties of hard superconductors. To verify that our experimental techniques are valid and to establish a relative standard against which other materials may be measured, we feel it advisable to know the behavior of the Nb-Zr alloys under a variety of processing conditions. As an initial step toward this goal, we have determined in detail the kinetics of the transformations in Nb-Zr alloys. EXPERIMENT A number of problems had to be solved before beginning any fruitful work on the reaction kinetics in this system. While solving some of these problems, either by chance or by design, small amounts of information were obtained about alloys containing 40, 50, 60, 65, 67, 70, and 75 pct Nb, bal. Zr. In addition, a large range of grain sizes and a range of temperatures considerably greater than the range indicated by Rogers and Atkins phase diagram were examined. We will, however, report in detail only the results obtained for the Nb + 33 pct Zr and Nb + 25 pct Zr alloys at three grain sizes, two levels of oxygen contamination, and the temperature range 550 to 950°C. These data are most complete, but the other data are sufficiently complete to indicate the kind and magnitude of the variation of the transformation kinetics outside this range. The first and most difficult problem encountered in this inquiry was one of sample homogeneity. When Nb-Zr alloys are arc- or electron-beam-melted on a cooled copper hearth, solidification is sufficiently slow that there is appreciable coring in the cast structure and a large variation of grain size across the button thickness. Both these factors significantly affect the apparent reaction rate in the system. A two-step solution to the problem was attempted; an arc-melting and drop-casting technique has been developed by conald that greatly reduces the as-cast grain size and virtually eliminates coring segregation. Ingots made in this way exhibited no detectable (3 pct maximum) zirconium segregation. Before it was evident just how good this technique was, we attempted to supplement it with rather long-time, high-temperature annealing of the cast ingots. This annealing was carried out in evacuated and sealed (seal-off pressures < 1.0 x 106 torr) quartz capsules lined with tantalum foil at 1400 to 1450 C for 8 to 72 hr. There were two principal effects of this treatment: the grain size increased to a fairly uniform 150 p, and the surface and all grain boundaries near the surface acquired a film of a second phase, tentatively identified as an oxide (possibly additionally contaminated with silicon). There was no evidence that this 1400 C treatment had affected the zirconium segregation. High-temperature annealing was subsequently used only for grain-size control, but anneals of longer than 4 hr at temperatures greater than 1000°C were performed in dynamic vacuums (pressure no greater than 1.0 x lo torr). Any contamination resulting from these treatments was well below the limits of detection of our techniques. All samples, as cast, were cold-swaged to at least 85 pct reduction in area. The samples called cold-worked were tested as swaged. The minimum re-crystallization anneal for these alloys was about 12 hr at 1050 C; this produced an equiaxed grain diameter of about 4 to 8 P. Annealing for 4 hr at 1450°C produced a grain size of about 80 to 150 p; and annealing for 4 hr at 1650aC, close to the melting point of many of these alloys, produced a grain size of 0.5 to 1.0 mm. "Complex geology requires innovative approaches to confidently and appropriately model grade and geologic trends. Local Anisotropy Kriging (LAK), by Isaaks and Company, and MineSight® Dynamic Unfolding (MSDU) from Hexagon Mining are advanced interpolation methods designed to best estimate grade along deformed three-dimensional grade trends at sediment-hosted deposits. While LAK works in Euclidean space for the construction of variograms, kriging weight assignment, and non-linear local interpolation search ellipsoids, MSDU is far more dynamic and can utilize a modeled three-dimensional undulating surface representing a folded grade trend to construct the above mentioned. MSDU was implemented at the sediment-hosted, stratabound Tenke-Fungurume mining district and revealed major block-to-block differences in interpolated copper and cobalt grades compared to LAK. INTRODUCTION Grade estimation is the cornerstone of long-range mine planning. Pit designs, metal recovery, mining costs, reserves calculations and reporting are all dependent upon a reliable grade model. If the geology is poorly understood or the interpolation methods and parameters have been haphazardly constructed, then massive financial losses will be the inevitable outcome. Therefore, a properly trained geologist must use all of the appropriate tools available including deposit knowledge and advances in modeling technology to construct the most geostatistically and practically sound long-range block model. Certain deposits, such as the sediment-hosted deposits at Tenke-Fungurume, require an interpolation method that best suites the style of mineralization. In 2014, Hexagon Mining developed a tool in MineSight called dynamic unfolding (MSDU) that has the potential to improve upon previous Euclidean-based interpolation methods. MSDU utilizes the non-stationarity of a folded grade trend to more accurately construct variograms and improve interpolation results based upon a modeled three-dimensional surface. Geology Overview The sediment-hosted Tenke-Fungurume mining district is located in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Figure 1). The rocks within the district are primarily dolomites and shales from the lower half of the Roan Supergroup that were mineralized by ascending pregnant copper and cobalt rich brines within a massive sedimentary basin (Cailteux et al., 2005) (Figure 2). These oxidized brines likely found a fluid channel in the porous RSC unit. The surrounding rock units provided a redox boundary for copper and cobalt precipitation along organic rich beds, forming a massive stratabound deposit that was later broken up by several subsequent tectonic events (Dewaele et al., 2006). Layering and Block Orientations To capture the bedding-controlled nature of the Tenke-Fungurume copper and cobalt mineralization, each lithology type must be subdivided into individual layers with a uniform thickness (Figure 3). The thickness of each layer is determined by the user, but should equal the bench height to achieve maximum resolution within each lithology type. Composites are back coded from the model to achieve layer codes that match block locations."

This study presents a model to predict fate of resuspended sediment in the development of deep-sea mineral resources including manganese nodules under Clarion-Clipperton area of the Pacific Ocean. The manganese nodules are expected to be developed near future and major research is undergoing in Korea recently concerning many aspects of the mineral resources development. One aspect is about environmental concern related to the deep-sea development, and a major environmental problem is the resuspended deep-sea sediment. In order to quantitatively analyze the resuspended sediment in the water column during the deep-sea development, particle size distribution (PSD) was considered an important factor in this research. The model developed here includes PSD and coagulation process, as well as sedimentation process. The model is one dimensional in the vertical profile, and was designed to describe the change of particle size distribution in the water column in the given vertical point. Based on the mathematical modeling, a numerical model was developed. Using the model, basic simulation was performed under representative environmental setting of the deep-sea environment. The simulation showed the dynamics of change of particle size distribution for 50 m depth of water column from the deep-sea bed, up to 10 days of simulation time. The simulation results indicate that coagulation seemed an important factor in the fate of resuspended deep-sea sediment. As a result, this research shows that the particle size distribution approach, as well as considering the coagulation process, is needed and may be effectively applied to environmental impact analysis of deep-sea resuspended sediment. The objectives, essential features and implications of the &apos;random&apos; and &apos;deterministic&apos; types of ore value surfaces are examined as well as the basic requirements for a satisfactory prediction model. The &apos;random&apos; method used on the South African gold mines and based on observed auto-covariance patterns is briefly discussed as well as its justification in preference to the &apos;deterministic&apos; approach. Various mathematical models for auto-covariance patterns are examined for the one-dimensional case. It is also shown that these patterns as estimated for ore values in certain mines agree closely for various sizes of ore unit. In two case studies the variations in gold, uranium and ore thickness covariance patterns are examined and compared with certain geological features established independently from sedimentological studies.

Pit slopes at Cananea commonly vary from 50-55°, and some have been standing for over 25 years. Their maximum vertical extent is 700 ft. Investigation of these slopes and the rocks of which they are composed has led to the decision to experiment with final pit slope angles of up to 70". Precision blasting to obtain a smooth final pit wall with minimum raveling is an integral part of this field experiment. Presplitting, one of the precision blasting techniques, requires the drilling of a single row of holes along the limit of a pre- designed excavation. The hole spacings and charge concentrations must be experimentally determined in the field, using published data as a base (Table 1). The holes are fired prior to the main round and carry no burden and therefore produce no broken rock. Thus, it is an operational cost with no direct return on investment.

Case Study: Dragline Swing to Dump Automation By Peter Corke, CSIRO Manufacturing Technology/CRC for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) Peter Corke presented a case study of a project to automate the dragline swing to dump operation. The project is funded by ACARP, BHP Coal, Pacific Coal and the CMTE and is being carried out on a dragline at Pacific Coal&apos;s Meandu mine near Brisbane. Corke began by highlighting that the minerals industry makes extensive use of large, mechanised machines. However, unlike other industries, mining has not adopted automation and most machines are controlled by human operators on board the machine itself. Choosing an automation target The dragline automation was chosen because: ò draglines are one of the biggest capital assets in a mine; ò performance between operators vary significantly, so improved capital utilisation is possible; ò the dragline is often the bottleneck in production; ò a large part of the operation cycle is spent swinging from dig to dump; and ò it is technically feasible. There has been a history of drag line automation projects, none with great success.

And at the global level, human activities are altering the very systems on which our species depends. Doing nothing about such problems as climate change is not an option. It is possible to move to a sustainable future but it will require fundamental changes to our values and national social institutions. We must recognise that we share a common future with the entire human family and the other species with which we share the planet. It is not just our humanitarian duty to improve the lot of the poorest people of the world. It is also enlightened self-interest because a world of increasing inequality will be a world of increasingly destructive tension.

INTRODUCTION The King and Beaver mines of Asbestos Corporation Limited (ACL) were joined in 1957 to form the King-Beaver mine. In 1964, ACL purchased the Johnson&apos;s Asbestos Company. The combined underground workings are a part of the King- Beaver mine. Asbestos ore is mined at the rate of 4080 metric tons per day (mtpd) to provide 15% of the company&apos;s daily requirement in the Thetford Mines area. Figure 1 shows the location of Thetford Mines. Two shafts service the underground. No. 3 shaft, 457 m deep, is used for personnel and material transportation, downcast ventilation, and ore hoisting. No. 4 shaft, 820 m to the south, is 389 m deep. It is used for material transportation and upcast ventilation. Figure 2 shows the relative locations of the shafts and the underground workings. The ore is mined by block caving. HISTORY The orebody outcropped at surface and was first mined as an open pit. Underground mining commenced when open pit mining became impractical. Shrinkage stoping, used initially, was unsatisfactory in the highly fractured ore. Sublevel stoping improved ore recovery and safety, but did not overcome the adverse effects of the un- stable rock. Observations of the rock failures indicated that block caving would be satisfactory. This was confirmed by careful investigation and testing. A method of block caving similar to that used at the Miami Copper Company was adopted. The first block commenced production in June 1933. BLOCK CAVING General A large block of ore is undercut above pre- pared drawpoints. The ore above the undercut caves by its own weight. Caving progresses up- ward as the caved ore is drawn. A large proportion of the rock breaks up in the caving action so that it will pass through the drawpoints. Oversize blocks are broken by drilling and blasting or mudcapping. Figure 3 shows the progressive stages of block caving. In the central part of the ore zone, the vertical dimension of a block is determined by the 132 metres between production levels. When isolated ore pockets are developed, the vertical dimensions of a block depend on the extension of the ore zone above the undercut. The minimum horizontal dimension of an under- cut determines the cavability of the overlying block. When necessary, caving is assisted by drilling long horizontal holes into the block above the undercut and blasting them. This procedure speeds up or restarts caving. It will not ensure complete caving of blocks having undercuts less than 30 m wide. Orebodies suitable for block caving are highly fractured and wide enough to cave freely without excessive dilution. "The Highmont copper-molybdenum deposits are at Gnawed Mountain in the Highland Valley porphyry copper district, 125 miles northeast of Vancouver. This district is near the center of the lower Jurassic Guichon Batholith, where a north-trending swarm of porphyry dikes is crossed by west-northwesterly structural belts in which fracturing, intrusion of porphyry and breccia, and mineralization areconcentrated.The Highmont deposits are 2 miles southeast of, and in the same southernmost structural belt as, the Lornex deposit. The main deposits occur on either side of a composite dike of granodiorite, porphyry and breccia which strikes west-northwestward in fractured quartz diorite. North of the dike, the adjacent Nos. 1 (East) and 2 (West) zones together contain 150 million tons of open-pit ore mineable in two separate pits. These two zones will support a 25,000-tpd mill with a grade in the first five years of approximately 0.46 per cent copper equivalent. South of the dike, the Nos. 3 and 4 zones are partly explored and will provide large additional reserves. In these various zones, chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite form disseminations and fracture-fillings accompanied by quartz, K-feldspar, tourmaline, sericite, specular hematite and other minerals. Bornite extends for varying distances north of the dike, beyond which chalcopyrite is locally accompanied by pyrite. Higher-grade mineralization tends to coincide with fracture swarms, or with shear zones and faults which largely parallel these swarms. The ore zones are reflected by geochemical soil anomalies which show some glacial dispersion. LP. surveys gave weak but significant responses, expressed as per cent frequency effect. The ore zones occur within a strong magnetic gradient, but do not show a significant magnetic response."

THE presence of deformation bands in cold-worked metals is known to influence the development of deformation textures1 but has not been considered in any theoretical treatments. At the present time the most rigorous theory of deformation textures appears to be based on Taylor&apos;s concept of homogeneous deformation of a crystal within a polycrystalline aggregate.&apos; For each crystal the Taylor theory allows the operation of several equivalent combinations of five or more slip systems. Hence deformation bands can arise from the operation of a separate combination of slips in each of several portions within a crystal. On the other hand, a second type of band may occur as a consequence of slip on systems other than those selected on the basis on homogeneous deformation. This type appears to be associated with crystals of symmetrical orientations, such as the [loo] and [lll.] axial orientations in drawn wires of fcc single crystals studied by Ahlborn.3 In this note we propose a simple mechanism of deformation banding of the second type, and compare the theoretical results for wire drawing of [loo] and [Ill] with Ahlborn&apos;s observations. In outlini the model requires that the work to accomplish a given overall shape change by banding be less than or equal to the work to accomplish the same change by homogeneous deformation. While the work by homogeneous deformation, WH = ?T ;dri, can be calculated exactly by the equivalent methods of Taylor2 or of Bishop and Hill,4 the work by banding, WB, is less certain. The latter consists of 1) Wi, work by slip within a band, 2) Wb, work associated with formation of a boundary between bands, and 3) Wc, work to correct the difference in shape change arising from banding and homogeneous deformation. The Wi term can be evaluated explicitly for a band with an assumed set of slip systems, but a satisfactory analysis of Wb and Wc has not been obtained. Since WB = Wi + Wb + Wc WH, for banding to occur, however, a necessary condition is Wi = WH . Hence it seems reasonable to choose a band with the lowest value of Wi among competing bands consistent with Wi = WH, and then minimize Wb and Wc by arranging the physical configuration of the selected band. Wc is minimized by combining neighboring bands such that their net strain matches the macroscopic strain as closely as possible, and Wb is minimized by enforcing strain compatibility across the boundary between two neighboring bands, similar to the case of a grain boundary.5 It is realized that this procedure is not completely satisfactory, but it does seem to explain Ahlborn&apos;s observations reasonably well. The procedure is now outlined for the two corner orientations. a) [l00]. Fig. 1 shows a (100) stereographic projection. The results of the Taylor analysis for axi-symmetric flow by homogeneous deformation6 show that, while [loo] itself is unstable, the rotation of the tensile axis will nevertheless be confined to within about 15 deg from [loo]. Alternatively, less work may be expended by banding with slip on a pair of systems with primary-conjugate relationship, e.g., (ll1)[10l.I + (li1.)[110]. Increasing interfacial area through gas injection is one of the main methods for accelerating reaction between slag, metals, and gases in modern pyrometallurgical reactors. In slag-metal reactors, the generation of a large number of metal droplets into the slag phase through high gas velocity has a much larger effect on the overall kinetics compared to the enhanced mass transfer through mixing. Top blowing technology generates large interfacial areas (>300 m2/tonne) through high impingement gas velocity at short distances between the exit of the injection lance and the metal-slag interface. Phase separation may become a limit at the case of very high interfacial areas, though there is still only limited understanding of the trajectories of metal droplets in slag-metal-gas emulsions.

Efforts to evaluate washery performance are nearly as old as the art of coal cleaning, and in former years there was no uniformity in either the methods used or the basic terminology employed. This situation, and the con- fusion it bred, prevailed until about the time of the First International Coal Preparation Conference in 1950, Largely because of the interest of the French coal research organization Cerchar, the subject of evaluating performance was given prime importance at this conference. As a result, there is now a much greater degree of uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results. The International Standards Organization currently is working toward international standards of terminology and methods that should improve the situation even more. The various criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of coal- cleaning equipment fall into three categories, depending upon the extent to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal; some are directly dependent, others are only indirectly dependent, and still others are substantially indenpendent.

GRACE mine and mill, owned by Bethlehem-Cuba Iron Mines Co. and operated by Bethlehem Cornwall Corp., are being developed to produce 9600 tons of 42 ½ pct Fe magnetite ore, to yield 5760 tons per day of agglomerated iron concentrates averaging 65 pct Fe. Located about 14 miles south of Reading, the property is ideally situated in relation to good highways and railroad. Three major steel plants, at Bethlehem, Steelton, and Sparrows Point, Md., are about equidistant from the mine. Discovery of the orebody resulted from an airborne magnetometer survey, completed in 1948, con¬sisting of 7000 lineal miles of flight lines spaced one-fourth of a mile apart and extending from the Delaware River on the east to Gettysburg, Pa., on the west. After examining the magnetic maps, Bethlehem&apos;s geologists made limited surface traverses over the Grace mine and Warwick area to check the location, and realtors were engaged to purchase the desired properties over and adjacent to the area showing favorable indication of ore.

Sands are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. In Michigan, annual sand disposal amounts to about one million tons. A process has been developed in this study to reclaim sands from a steel foundry. Physical separations are utilized in conjunction with other operations (such as the removal of binder, metal, spruce, washes, etc.) to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches have been examined. Experimental results are presented. The applicabilities of these separation methods are discussed.

The results of field measurements using an air injection technique to investigate the integrity of three pillars in the Mclntyre Mines Ltd. 114 seam at Crande Cache, Alberta, are reported. These pillars are shown to be stable and an estimate is made of the strength of these pillars. Using these results, together with Hustrulid&apos;s pillar strength formulae, a general pillar strength equation for the 114 seam is developed. This equation takes into account the probability of failure that may be deemed tolerable within the design requirements. The variation of the minimum pillar dimensions with depth below surface for uniform pillar layouts is then examined for a range of tolerable failure probabilities. A general equation of the form B = 2.60 +B Z relates the minimum pillar design width, B metres, with the overburden depth, Z metres, where B is a parameter related to the tolerable failure probability. This equation only applies for 3.05m high pillars with 6.lm wide entries. Finally, the question of what failure probability is tolerable within the design of mine pillars is discussed. This will depend on the support role required of that pillar and the anticipated period over which the pillar must perform that role. Five categories of coal mine pillars are defined, each with a somewhat different role to perform. Tentative design criteria in the form of "tolerable probabilities of failure" are suggested for four of these five categories of pillar. The fifth category of pillar has no reliable support function to perform and support must be obtained by other means.

Inertial navigation technology has, for the first time, allowed the position of a longwall shearer to be mapped in three dimensions. Following the success of the technology in highwall mining and successful trials on a longwall face, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) commissioned a three year "Landmark" project that aimed to advance longwall automation to the level of "on-face observation" by the end of 2004. This project has been completed with the following successful technical outcomes: Automatic face alignment was achieved, using an inertial navigation-based sensor on the shearer, to accurately measure face geometry and feedback signals used to move OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) roof supports. Operational on-line measurement of creep with creep information incorporated into face alignment corrections. Inertial Navigation System (INS)-based enhanced horizon control was bench-tested. Operational broadband communications system to shearer using wireless Ethernet on a commercial-product basis. Acquisition of located coal-face features for use in thermal infrared-based horizon control. Automated Longwall Information System (LIS) developed which integrates information from multiple systems and sensors and provides high quality visualisation and control interfaces. Automatic roadway and face convergence monitoring tools successfully tested. Condition monitoring tools developed and demonstrated for improved face reliability. This paper summarises the outcomes of the project and describes the work being undertaken for the 2 year Landmark Extension project approved in April 2005. Consistent with the conference theme, the paper focuses on the ground control aspects of the project.

"The focus of this paper is on the analysis of geometrical discontinuity properties for the rock mass located within an open pit mine located in Western Africa. Discontinuity data were collected using various techniques including oriented core logging, borehole televiewer surveys, surface pit wall mapping and photogrammetry. The geological setting was initially studied prior to the data analysis to produce threedimensional ground models of the regional and mine site geology along with block diagrams illustrating predicted fracture patterns. Stereographic and statistical discontinuity data analysis of the geometrical properties of the rock mass was subsequently performed to identify unique structural domains throughout the open pit area. The discontinuity data collected throughout the studied open pit area were primarily discontinuity orientation, frequency and spacing and the investigation focused on the reasons for observed differences between the various data collection techniques. Stereographic analysis was used to assess the preferred geometry of discontinuities filtered by lithology, data collection technique, borehole, discontinuity type and pit wall (footwall or hanging wall). The observed fracture pattern is explained adequately by the geological setting. The need for accurate ground models for the design of open pit slopes is highlighted.INTRODUCTIONThe Tasiast Mine is an open pit operation located in north-western Mauritania, approximately 300 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. The Tasiast mine, which is owned and operated by Kinross Gold Corporation (Kinross), began commercial operations in 2008. The Tasiast mine is located in an area characterized by flat desert terrain within the western reaches of the Sahara Desert region. The current mine site includes mill buildings, shop facilities, waste dumps, tailings facilities and two main open pit operations (Piment and West Branch). The West Branch pit is the focus of this paper. The current open pit plan for West Branch indicates a final pit measuring approximately 2.5 km long by 1.4 km wide and 510 m deep."
