Selection criteria for the instrumentation employed in semi-autogenous grinding circuits are reviewed. Instruments in use for grinding mill and related process equipment start- up, shutdown, protection, monitoring, control, and performance reporting functions are discussed with examples given of current industry practice. The quantity and type of instrumentation used vary from operation to operation, but today many semi- autogenous circuits are highly instrumentated, and employ automatic process control for both circuit stabilization and optimization of economic performance. Examples of analog and digital based control systems exist, and are described.

The importance of cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts for possible future rare metal sources has currently been recognized. The thin layer-type deposit characteristics affect not only the excavation efficiency but also the economy of mining venture. Considering the thin layer-type distribution and the utilization of some rare metals in cobalt-rich manganese crusts, a preliminary economic feasibility of the mining venture is evaluated. Under some preliminary technical assumptions, the possibility of cobalt-rich manganese crusts for future rare metal sources for Japan is examined. The important role of utilization of rare metals in the crusts is highlighted.

Vibratory or oscillatory conveyors can be found in all types of industry, handling virtually any granular bulk material, often at elevated temperatures. These conveyors can be combined with other process functions, such as screening, cooling, drying and dewatering, while conveying. Although construction and installation is relatively simple, the engineering and design analysis of the vibratory mechanics is fairly complex. This paper will discuss the basic types of vibratory conveyors and the analysis of the material movement along the carrying trough.

A dynamic simulator for CIP / CIL gold recovery plants has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre within a collaborative, industrially - funded AMIRA project and with the participation of the Western Australian School of Mines. The simulator incorporates kinetic models for the leaching of gold from ore and its adsorption onto activated carbon, and the residence time distributions of the leach liquor, pulp solids and carbon in the circuit. Features of the simulator include the effects of gold loading distributions on both the ore and carbon on reaction rates, and the difference in residence time distribution between the leach liquor and pulp solids. The simulator allows for the estimation of kinetic model parameters from full scale applications, as well as some scale - up of parameters from laboratory batch tests. The laboratory tests were conducted at the WASM as part of the collaborative research project. The simulator can operate in both steady - state and dynamic modes, and has potential applications in design, optimisation and control of CIP / CIL plants.

Six intermediate phases occur in the Nb-Zn sysThese phases form by peritectic reactions at 1120°, spectively. The Nb Zn 15 phase appears as the minor phase in the eutectic structure, and the terminal phases remain nearly pure niobium and zinc even at high temperature. Vapor -pressure measurements on the four high-temperature phases (Nb Zn to Nb Zn 3) permitted estimates of the composition limits of these phases and the calculation of approximate values of AFO, AH°, and AS°. 1 HE present study of the constitution of the binary Nb-Zn system was a part of an analysis of the mechanism by which coatings of the Nb-Zn intermediate phases protect niobium against oxidation at high temperature.' Since the primary interest in these phases was in coating service, attention in this study was given principally to the four phases stable at high temperature with only cursory attention to the two low-temperature phases. The solubility studies of niobium in zinc by Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 and the reports from the present study of the Nb-Zn coating represent the only published data pertaining to this system. Previously Hodge, Evans, and Hoskins, in an experimental survey, had noted that niobium was not resistant to attack by molten zinc, but no further observations were reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES a) General. The nature of the binary Nb-Zn system precluded the use of more conventional methods of determining the phase equilibria such as thermal analyses of a series of cast alloys. An extrapolation of the liquidus data of Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 to higher temperatures suggested that the solubility of niobium in zinc would remain low in the entire temperature range of interest. The preliminary results of the present studies showed that all of the high-temperature intermediate phases form by peritectic reactions. Thus the sluggish nature of this type of reaction and the steepness of the liquidus indicated that thermal analyses would not yield reliable data. The peritectic reactions, of course, precluded the direct formation of samples of the individual phases from the melt. b) Materials. The niobium and zinc used in the present studies were of high purity. The niobium, in the form of 0.1-in.-diameter rods, contained 30 ppm 0, 30 ppm N, and 15 ppm C. A sea bed sampling programme by CRA Exploration Pty. Limited over an area of 12000 km offshore from Westland, Southland and Otago, New Zealand, led to the discovery of the Harvester Prospect, an area of some 67 km2 which averaged 189 mg/m3 gold in surface samples. This area was in water depths of 70 to 100 m and contained a high grade core of 33 km2 which averaged 283 mghn3 gold. The gold recovered was fine grained, averaging 124 microns, and indicated a potential resource of approximately 10 t of gold per metre of thickness. Interpretation of existing seismic and geological data suggested that the gold anomaly may be associated with a unit of sediments 10-40 m thick, probably deposited during a lower sea level stand. Two initial attempts at vibrocoring the anomaly produced inconclusive results. In 1989 a much more powerful vibrocorer with scaled up support facilities and a dedicated 24 It turnaround laboratory were employed. The final results clearly showed that the gold was from an uneconomic surface enrichment.

DIFFRACTION micrography provides a useful tool for studying complex strain fields. Newkirk1 observed an X-ray diffraction effect due to strain interactions at the intersection of slip lines in LiF and attributed this effect to a reduction of primary extinction due to strain-gradients. It is the object of the current study to correlate the observations and rationalize the appearance of the strain fields around intersecting slip planes in x-ray extinction contrast studies by a semiempirical method. Fig. 1 shows typical strain patterns observed by Newkirk on (200) reflections in LiF using chromium radiation and a variation of the Berg-Barrett (B-B) technique. In other reflections (e.g., {220}) the strain patterns are absent. If one defines a vector 3 along the striations from the more to the less dense portion, and a vector v in the direction of the X-ray beam parallel to the reflecting plane, such that both 3 and v lie in the reflecting plane of the crystal, Fig. 1, then the positions of the striations on (200) reflections appear to be confined such that where is the angle between v and 3, Fig. 1. It will be seen later that 3 is the projection of Sb on the reflecting planes. In some instances the strain effects are observed only above the slip plane, Fig. l(C), in others only below, Fig. l(D). Where the strains appear to be both above and below the slip line, Fig. l(E), one sees that there are actually two slip lines present, Fig. 1(F) and (G). Furthermore, the strain patterns are observed in the vicinity of the intersection of emergent edge dislocations (diagonal lines on the micrograph) with emergent screw dislocations (horizontal lines on the micrograph), e.g., Fig. l(HJ) and (MN), but not in the vicinity of the intersection of two emergent edge dislocation arrays, Fig. l(HJ) and (KL). However, in the latter case the contrast of the dislocation array itself is reduced along (KL) and increased along (HJ). Line (AB) in Fig. 1 is the edge of the crystal, and the material to the left of (AB) is the side of the sample. Any empirical correlation will have to include most, if not all of the aforementioned observations. Lang2 and Newkirk1 determined that the condition for contrast is given by g-b#0 [2] where b is the Burgers' vector and g the diffraction vector (normal to the reflecting planes). If one assumes that the direction of the observed strain fields is given by the vector sum of the slip vectors (Sb1) of the intersecting slip planes, then Eq. [2] may be generalized to g-S#0 [3]

A new decarburization model for the RH system was constructed for calculating the decarburization reaction using a three-dimensional fluid dynamics program. The entire fluid flow in the RH process was calculated by evaluating the shape and volume of the plume zone, formed by Ar gas blown through multiple nozzles on the wall of the snorkel. On the basis of this fluid flow, the decarburizaiton reaction was calculated through establishing the decarburization reaction model, which considers the thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, and the decarburization sites (Ar bubble surface, bath surface, and the CO bubble fomtation at inner sites). The results from this model were compared with a real RH operation results with good agreement. Because it is possible to predict the carbon concentration at various conditions using this model, it may be useful in increasing the decarburizaiton rate. There is no new outstanding fact to be noted concerning the development of petroleum production and research in France and her possessions during 1935. France.—Pechelbronn remains the only important producing field in France. The total output has reached 538,921 bbl., showing a small decrease on last year's figures. Out of this, 302,737 bbl. was extracted by drilling and 236,184 bbl. (44 per cent) was obtained by means of shafts and galleries. Exploration of deeper formations was still in progress, and resulted in the discovery of a new Middle Triassic (Muschel-Kalk) producing horizon. In the vicinity of Hirtzbach (South Alsace) shallow exploration tests (500 ft.) were drilled by the Société de Pechelbronn, oil indications being found in the Tertiary. Two more important wells are now drilling in deeper horizons. The Chantenay well (Niévre) was finished in August, 1935, at a depth of 3544 ft.1 A test is under progress in Savoie. South of Gabian, at Pezenas, the erection of a rig is nearly completed.

Nickel produces a structure of alpha plus cutectoid almost identical with that of the normal aluminum bronze (Fig. 38), except for the rod-shaped nickel constituent in the alpha grains. Silicon produccs a light structure with small regular needles, possibly a modified form of beta. Fig. 45 shows the alpha plus beta structure of the normal 10 per cent. aluminum alloy as quenched. Manganese produces large grains of beta with alpha as a tiny constituent scattered throughout the spceimen. Silicon, on the other hand, produces all alpha, with free silicon present. One per cent. iron produces alpha plus beta, with a tiny constituent present in the alpha grains. Five per cent. iron introduces twins in the alpha and a nodular iron constituent in both the alpha and the beta. Figs. 50-58 include the structures of the alloys with 8 per cent, aluminum, tempered at 400" C. and at 650" C. Fig. 50 is the normal structure as drawn at 400" C!. It consists of large grains of twinned alpha plus a very small amount of beta. One per cent. silicon increases the amount of beta enormously, but when tempered at 650' C, the beta degenerates to a hard blue network constituent. One per cent. cobalt results in a structure of exceedingly fine-grained, twinned alpha, heavily mottled. Nickel produces large soft grains of alpha with a dot constituent in some of the grains, when tempered at 650" C. Manganese, when tempered at 400" C. produces alpha grains and shows the decom-

One form of encouragement for the small copper mining sector in Chile has been the construction and management of custom mill facilities to process the ore. The paper describes an economic analysis framework for the evaluation of government custom milling opportunities. Feasible mill locations and capacities within a region are selected and the infrastructure and milling costs associated with each combination of location and capacity are assessed. For each combination, the economics of developing and operating known copper deposits in the region is evaluated, and an optimum cut-off grade and mine capacity is selected for the deposits which justify development. Since the total ore supply from mines in the region may exceed a particular custom mill capacity, mine development is scheduled to optimize the economics of the mill facility. Finally, the best custom mill location and capacity is selected on the basis of overall costs and benefits. A copper mining region in northern Chile is used to illustrate the application of the model. A mobile mill approach is examined and compared with the fixed location mill alternatives. Results are analyzed as a function of copper price.

"AT PRESENT, it is not certain that any of the sulphide de in the Province of Nova Scotia attain the lower grade limit of 60 per cent sulphides over the minimum area of 1,000 square feet suggested as cut-off specifications for inclusion in this Symposium. However, several of them do include massive sections of substantial size and others represent concentrations of sulphide material that are well above average. It is felt, therefore, that a tentative classification of the deposits and presentation of their geological settings are justified and may help round out the genetic aspects of this study. Accordingly, data considered to be the most pertinent are assembled here in the event that some may fit into larger-scale patterns of mineralization that may take shape as a result of this investigation.The three principal massive sulphide deposits in Nova Scotia are the Stirling, the Smithfield, and the Walton. The locations of these are shown on the accompanying key-map (Figure 1).Three other deposits, the locations of which are also indicated on the map, are the Meat Cove, Rocky Brook, and Gays River de¬posits. Although these fall far short of the minimum dimensions and grade specifications referred to above they are singled out because they have received more than passing attention and are illustrative of the mineralization types to which they belong."

The Morongo Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is in south central San Bernardino County, California. U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the area during the fall of 1983. No mines, prospects, leases, or mining claims were found in the WSA. There are no known mineral deposits within the study area boundaries. Sand and gravel in the area is suitable for many types of construction uses, but similar and larger deposits outside the WSA are closer to markets. No energy resources have been identified in the WSA.

"THERE is nothing new under the sun." All over the world, mineral-dressing engineers are working at their problems, no two of which are alike. Each encounters equipment and process problems. Many devise simple ways and means of overcoming their difficulties. Many of these problems are quite common in the industry, yet, since no one human being seems capable of thinking of everything, these problems at some plants often are looked upon as necessary evils. The purpose of this symposium is to gather together, from competent engineers, devices and practices that have been useful to them. Most of the ideas contributed are not new, yet there is no plant operator, old timer or youngster, who will not find some idea herein that will give him a suggestion for improving his operation. Space does not permit a complete elaboration on all of the contributions offered. Each item is summarized, but this will be ample for those skilled in the art of mineral dressing. A list of contributors appears at the end of the paper, and the superior number at the end of each item identifies its source. GENERAL EQUIPMENT A signal light to show that a steel bin, containing relatively fine, moist ore, is full, can be made by suspending a copper rod in the bin to a sufficient depth to ensure ample contact with the ore. One wire of a 32-volt circuit should be attached to the rod and one to the side of the bin. Sufficient current will flow to make the signal light burn. A 110-volt circuit could be used, but 32 volts ensures safety.10 Fig I shows a circular bin for crushed ore. It is a concrete structure footed on the ground, using no supporting columns. Tailing from the sink-float was used for aggregate. Cross conveyors for discharging ore are not required, nor is a tripper for filling. Segregation is minimized by drawing from different gates. An exhaust fan on top of the bin eliminates condensation due to temperature of the ore.21 A beam with an adjustable point of suspension near the center permits rigging rolls for removal in a very few minutes. This makes unnecessary the lacing of the cable through the hub bolts on one side, around the shaft on the other, and the trouble of balancing the load.8 The ratchet handle on a Symons crusher may be replaced by a drum with a cable wound on it. When the cable is pulled by a crane or hoist it causes the drum to revolve and thus screws or unscrews the bowl. Performing a magnetizing roast in a furnace or kiln is a well-established technology. However, the use of microwave heat for the magnetization of hematite in the beneficiation of ferruginous bauxite is a new approach. This paper reports on an investigation of this procedure, which is followed by comminution and magnetic separation. The results of this investigation indicate that a nonmagnetic product containing 80% A1203 and 2.5% Fe203 with a recovery of 80% can be made from a crude bauxite ore containing 55.9% A1203 and 5.6% Fe203. This product is suitable for refractory use. The mechanism is explained by the ability of the microwave radiation to heat specific points within the bauxite. These heat-specific points are at the location of iron minerals. In a reduced atmosphere, the microwaves promote faster conversion of the iron minerals to a magnetic phase, which improves the magnetic-separation process.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated engineering noise controls to reduce sound levels in cabs on air-rotary drill rigs. A recent investigation revealed that some drillers are exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 85 dB even though a cab is used. NIOSH studied the in-cab sound levels of one such rig. First, preliminary tests were conducted in a controlled environment using accelerometers and microphones with spectral analysis to identify the dominant noise sources for in-cab sound levels. The results indicate that vibration transmitted from multiple hydraulic pumps to the control panel produces a dominant spike in the sound level spectrum in the 400 Hz 1/3-octave band. Next, field tests were performed in a production environment to evaluate noise controls to reduce in-cab sound levels. It was found that utilizing hydraulic noise suppressors reduces the structure-borne noise transmitted to the control panel. Further, using hydraulic noise suppressors and enhancing soundproofing reduced the in-cab A-weighted sound levels by as much as 4 dB.

Effects of various factors such as diaphragm materials, composition of electrolytes and current density on copper electrowinning from cupric chloride solutions was investigated. It is found that the crux of this process is to prevent the dissolution of copper by cupric ion and the formation of suspended CuCl precipitate. A process with high difference of copper concentrations between the feed solution and the spent electrolyte was selected. With this process, in which the feed solution contains 90 g/dm3 [Cu"], 3M NaC1, and 10mg/dm3 bone glue, and the spent electrolytes contains 10 g/dm3 [Cul, a very smooth and dense copper cathode can be produced with current efficiency above 93% and energy requirement less than 1.7 kwh/kg Cu at 25°C with N2 sparging. If a slightly higher energy requirement is permitted, smooth and dense copper cathodes can be produced at the current density up to 800 A/m2 with the identical solutions.

Develop a 22-ton capacity temporary mine roof support light enough to be easily lifted and transported manually from one place to another. Approach Several potential approaches were investigated in developing a new temporary support. An all-hydraulic, high-strength aluminum design was chosen as the best. The support was designed, fabricated, and tested in several mines. The first units, built for 6- to 8-foot seam heights, have a load- bearing capacity of 22 tons, and weigh only 55 pounds. How It Works The lightweight hydraulic support is designed for use in any temporary support situation in place of wood posts or steel mechanical or hydraulic supports. This includes use prior to roof bolting in room and pillar mining and in longwall development sections, use as head and tailgate supports for a longwall, and use as turn posts and breaker posts in retreat mining operations. INTRODUCTION In the early 1950s, underground miners and tunnel¬ing contractors were experimenting with ways to supple¬ment or eliminate track-bound loading and hauling equipment. Diesel-powered crawler and rubber-tire mounted front-end loaders and trucks designed for use on the surface were being modified and tried with limited but encouraging success. Miners began working with interested manufacturers to explore the develop¬ment of vehicles specifically designed to meet the de¬mands and constraints of underground material han¬dling. By the mid 1960s, load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles were firmly established as a fundamental part of what has become known as the "trackless" mining concept, used in many mines and many countries around the world. The flexibility, mobility, and versatility of these units have given the industry a useful tool and have added new dimensions to mine development and produc¬tion. Many old mines have been redesigned to accom¬modate these trackless vehicles, and few new mining plans have failed to find some use for the concept during some phase of development and production. By 1977, several manufacturers in several different countries were producing a variety of LHD vehicles to meet the growing worldwide demand. GENERAL DESCRIPTION LHD vehicles combine certain characteristics of conventional front-end loaders and dump trucks, spe¬cifically designed for materials handling in underground mining and tunneling. The design intent is to provide one vehicle with one man, with the vehicle loading itself, hauling the load over level or inclined haulageways, and dumping the load. A typical production cycle of the most popular units has the operator driving the vehicle forward, forcing the bucket into the muck at or near floor level, and using the tractive effort of the vehicle and the prying action of the bucket to roll out and tilt back the load as shown in Fig. 1. With the bucket rolled back into the carrying position on the boom and the boom resting on the main frame of the vehicle, the load is hauled (trammed) to the dump point as shown in Fig. 2. At the dump point, the boom is raised, the bucket is rolled forward, and the load slides out as shown in Fig. 3. After dumping, the bucket is rolled back to the carrying position, the boom is returned to rest on the main frame, and the unit is driven back to the loading point for another load. There are two other types of LHD units that are slightly different in the cycles that they perform. One uses a hopper arrangement carried on the front of the machine, with a small bucket mounted ahead of the hopper. Several passes with the small bucket load the hopper, which is dumped by opening its floor. Al¬though this concept is several years old, it has gained less than 0.5% of the total market. The most recent LHD concept differs in that it has one bucket nesting inside another. The smaller inner bucket is loaded first, and it is then tilted back and above the larger bucket. When the larger bucket has been loaded, it is rolled back, and the total load is trammed to the dumping point. The dumping operation tilts the buckets in the reverse order from that of the loading operation. The impact of this new concept on the mining industry has not been measured yet. This chapter concentrates on the LHD vehicles employing the cycle described by Figs. 1 through 3, since these LHD units constitute an estimated 99% of the units in current use. MAIN VEHICLE FEATURES In general, the LHD vehicles available from most manufacturers share the same basic features.

A chartered bus with about 30 attendees of the just completed 1998 SME Annual Meeting headed toward Green Cove Springs, FL, which the author had been told was located somewhere south of Jacksonville, FL. In conjunction with the meeting in Orlando, RGC (USA) Mineral Sands provided a tour of its facility. The author had worked with heavy minerals on a laboratory scale, performing the usual gravity and magnetic separations, but had never been to a heavy mineral mine and processing facility. Years ago as a metallurgist, the author once applied for a job in a heavy mineral operation in Florida -it may have been the same operation. After turning north on to Highway 95, the endless billboards promoting beach-front retirement communities proved the Atlantic ocean was just a few miles away (although the author never caught a glimpse of it). After another hour, the bus suddenly turned west and continued inland for about 65 km (40 miles). The thought occurred, "We are talking about beach sands, what are we doing heading away from the ocean?" As the bus continued inland, the author was struck by the flatness of the land and by the lakes, rivers and wetlands. He was also impressed by the many fine stands of pine and hardwoods. The office of RGC (USA) Mineral Sands is located about 16 km (10 miles) south of Green Cove Springs. Upon leaving the bus, members of the tour were greeted by Graeme Sloan, general manager, and Elliot Mallard, manager of mining. They provided some general information about the operation, including a slide show. RGC's Florida operation produces four concentrates: zircon (ZrSiO,), rutile (TiO,), ilmenite (FeTiO,) and leucoxene (an alteration product of ilmenite containing 67% to 70% TiO,). With a work force of about 170, the annual production of the above products is about 23,27, 45 and 14 kt (25,000 30,000 50,000 and 15,000 st), respectively. RGC also has other mineral sand operations, in addition to gold and base metal mines, mostly in Australia.
