It is stressed ·that applications of electromagnetic and ultrasound energies, and control of flow fields rate required to create the highly efficient mixing I separation reactor.IntroductionIn recent years, it seems that the research and development in the field of steelmaking has shifted its emphasis to the solidification I ingot-making process in which continuous casting plays the leading role. From a long-range point of view, however, the need for continual development of the refining process will probably increase but is very unlikely to decrease. In order to meet such demands, it is required that problems and issues of the present process should be clearly grasped and that there must be rapid progress in process elements, such as highly efficient mixing and separation of different phases.Applications of electromagnetic and ultrasound energies and flow field control will become important options for resolving the above-mentioned problems. By efficiently and skillfully incorporating these new technologies into high-efficiency mixing/separation reactors, the innovative refining process will be established in the early 21st century."

The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

Mexico has been famous for its silver-mines ever since the Spanish conquest; but in respect to gems, although many varieties occur, yet only a few have been obtained in any important amount. Considering the extent of country in Mexico and ill the adjoining States of the Central American Republics, and the richness of mineral wealth that must surely exist there, our present knowledge of the occurrence of precious stones is remarkably small. The great prevalence of igneous rocks would lead us to anticipate the future discovery of many localities of gems and ornamental stones, when fuller scientific exploration shall have taken place.* At the present time the only gem-stone that is systematically mined in Mexico is opal, and the only important ornamental stone is tecali, the so-called Mexican onyx. PRESIDENT PRYDE: I am sure we have all listened with interest to the presentation of this subject. Anything that promises economy in coal mining today is welcomed by all of us. We will now have a discussion on this paper. If any of you gentlemen want to ask any questions, you may do so. I think we will develop something of interest and along the lines of economy. That is the first consideration of a coal mining man. MR. H. D. RANDALL: It is an interesting fact that in manufacturing we find the greatest economy results from giving a man the simplest possible act to perform, while there is nothing too complicated for a machine. If we want to put up a set screw we find it cheaper to let one man set it up and the other screw it in. The maximum economy is what we are after. Similarly, one of the points of greatest interest which Mr. Ickis has emphasized, is that this automatic equipment not merely dispenses with a manual operator, but also performs certain functions which the operator cannot do. It provides an inherent protection to the apparatus and service not possible under manual operation. We very rarely have cases of failure with these automatic equipments, .and consequently have the advantage not only of having eliminated the operator's salary, but also his mistakes. We have had a large number of these equipments in use for several years, so that their practicality is now thoroughly proven, and the trend of practice now indicates that the automatic idea will be further extended and will become universal for such classes of service. MR. D. C. McKEEHAN (Union Pacific Coal Company) : My notion of an automatic sub-station is one that does not necessarily require new equipment beyond the control equipment; so that any of you that are interested in it can take up with the manufacturers and find out how much it would cost to change any equipment. The greatest point I think is the fact it eliminates the several nationalities from operating the set, either on day shift or night shift. They can so lock the control as to make it impossible for anyone to start or stop it, except the one who has the authority. Another point I do not believe was brought out very clearly: It would be particularly advantageous to people who buy power, and if you could have several sets in parallel, it would allow you to start the shift with one set and cut in the additional sets as the shift progresses. There are various operations that stop at the end of each shift, and-one or two or three sets can be cut out, leaving the load on one set, providing the size of the copper is sufficient to supply all the points of the mine. Another point I want to bring out: In case you have quite a number of sets distributed along transmission line, the switch trips, the operation restores the service, and you may have several hundred-or in case with us, we would have several thousand-K. V. A. of Motor Generator Sets and Rotaries, that would be starting at once, and the switch would automatically trip out again. MR. RANDALL: Another form of control was described as the so-called supervisory control. This control could be started up so the starting would not be synchronous, but could be spread out over a sequence. MR. McKEEHAN: I think that is rather a theoretical consideration for coal miners. They are standing at the controller ready to shut it off unless there is some selective method of starting various sets- MR. RANDALL: I had in mind this supervisory control, one man, a central operator who would determine which station should start and he would take time enough to have his load come on gradually. He would not permit all the installations to come on simultaneously, but come on in succession: MR. McKEEHAN: You misunderstand me. Indian tribes own a substantial portion of the West's minerals. More importantly, Indian reservations contain coal, oil and gas, uranium, and oil shale reserves in unusually large and unencumbered blocks. Many tribes are now prepared to intensify development of their large reserves knowing that they can offer energy partners the unique opportunity to develop major energy facilities free of overlapping local, state, and federal permitting authorities. The tribes, therefore, can offer mineral developers both substantial reserves and an unusual degree of freedom from a multiplicity of government regulation. In the past, Indians and energy companies enjoyed only partial success as business partners. Indian tribes lacked the resources and know-how to act as equal partners with large oil and gas and mining operators. The tribes relied on the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to initiate and execute reservation energy projects, and as a result the tribes never developed adequate tribal structures and the expertise to responsibly manage their energy resources. At the same time industry made little effort to understand and learn the laws, customs, and institutions existing on Indian reservations. To the contrary, industry found it easier to bypass the tribes and deal with BIA officials. But the situation has changed. In 1975 the tribes organized an effective coalition, the Council of Energy Resources Tribes (CERT), which recently acquired substantial federal assistance to bring the tribes a level of technical and business expertise that begins to equal that of industry. Because the tribes have changed the rules of the game, industry must now change and learn to work directly with tribal governments. A working knowledge of Indian law, practices, customs, and policies must be acquired by energy companies before beginning negotiations with tribal governments for development of reservation energy resources.

Each year, thousands of tons of toxic concentrates are produced as the unwanted byproducts of industrial operations and smelting activities. The fate of these materials remains open, as in general their consumption is limited and potential markets contracting. Xtaltite (pronounced crystal-tight) is a Synthetic Mineral Immobilization Technology (SMITE) optimized for the concentration, detoxification and consolidation of toxic metal wastes. In this approach, we seek to mimic nature to produce durable synthetic minerals that survive for aeons in well characterized geological settings. This approach has high public acceptability because the concept is easily understood by the layperson and the long term stability of the waste form may be predicted with confidence. In addition, where Xtaltite is used for mine backfill, a system of ecologically sustainable mining development is established. This paper details the design and fabrication of Xtaltite under oxidizing and reducing conditions. To illustrate and contrast these stabilization regimes, specific reference will be made to the treatment of thallium, chrom~um and arsenic wastes. Waste form performance under TCLP, dynamic boiling water tests and in other leaching media will be compared and discussed with respect to their relevance to different disposal options.

In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10–40 km in length. Road networks for these vehicles have historically been designed and maintained empirically, relying heavily on local experience. Whilst it is possible to construct amine haul road that requires no maintenance over its service life, this would be prohibitively expensive, as would the converse but rather in terms of vehicle operating and maintenance costs. An optimal functional design will include a certain amount and frequency of road maintenance which can be planned, scheduled and optimized within the limits of required road performance and minimum vehicle operating and road maintenance costs. For existing mine haul road networks, which may not be optimally designed and maintained, the problem of identifying existing deficiencies, quantifying their impact and assigning priorities within the constraints imposed by limited capital equipment and manpower is problematic. This is reflected in the fact that most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. The aim of this paper is to present a road maintenance management system which utilizes on-board truck diagnostic data in conjunction with computer-based truck dispatch systems. Through a comparative analysis of the various haul road maintenance systems available to a mine, a condition-triggered road maintenance system is introduced. System architecture, evaluation of real-time data, event trigger level determination, specific condition signatures and real-time rolling resistance calculation are discussed. Finally the event, activity, transaction and notification system is portrayed in conjunction with the determination of key productivity indicators and benchmarked road and truck performance. Roof support systems, longwall shields in particular, have persistently grown in size and capacity for the past 25 years. Why is this? Is it a good thing or is it unnecessary? What are the consequences of this “bigger-the-better” design philosophy? Rarely do we see a “one size fits all” approach to roof support except when it comes to longwall shields, where the historical trend for new procurements is to simply purchase the highest capacity support you can buy. Does high capacity ensure failures will not occur? The answer is no! The highest capacity tailgate supports are typically the ones that fail the most often. What does this tell us? It tells us that there are fundamental aspects of support design and ground control that we still do not understand or recognize when designing a support system. This paper provides an interesting evaluation of these issues and proposes a different approach to support design that attempts to match the support performance characteristics to the ground behavior. Along the way, some of the old premises of support design will be discarded, and new “controversial” ideas developed. Thinking outside the box never hurt any industry. Mining has made it a common practice.

Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. Consequently, the free-body diagram is that of a uniformly loaded cantilever beam with an inter-mediate support, as shown in Fig. 3. "Microwave-hydrothermal processing is a novel technique which combines the conventional hydrothermal processing with microwave field and we previously showed for the first time, that ceramic powders can be rapidly produced by this technique. This review paper deals with the synthesis of unary oxides such as Fe203, Ti02, Zr02, etc., binary oxides such as BaTiO3, SrTiO 3, PbTiO 3, SrZrO 3, KNbO3, etc., and ternary oxides such as NaTi2 (PO4)3 and pyrochlore phases of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3, Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 etc. and metal powders such as Cu, Ni, etc. below 195°C. This method can be adopted to the synthesis of a large variety of powders by the appropriate control of pH, Eh, temperature/pressure and concentration of chemical species. The main advantages of this method compared to conventional hydrothermal processing are (a) it increases the kinetics of reaction by one to two orders of magnitude, and (b) it can lead to novel phases especially those with layered structures.IntroductionConventional hydrothermal processing is a well-established synthesis technique which has been extensively used in the preparation of fine ceramic powders [1-5], large single crystals [6-8] and massive cement blocks [9]. Technologically important ceramic powders such as BaTiO 3, Al203 etc. made by the hydrothermal process are now commercially available. Although there are numerous methods for materials synthesis, hydrothermal method is truly a low temperature and environmentally benign process. For example, ZrSi04 (Zircon) which is extensively used in ceramic industry can be prepared hydrothermally at 150·C [10] compared to sol-gel or solid-state method [11,12] which require a temperature of about 1000·C. The hydrothermal method is environmentally benign because hydrothermal reactions are carried out in closed systems at low temperatures and the contents can be recovered and recycled after cooling to the ambient conditions. One of the disadvantages with any low temperature processing method is slow kinetics. For this reason we have combined the hydrothermal method with microwaves to enhance kinetics and we named this method as ""Microwave-hydrothermal"" processing [13- 16]. Although the combination of microwave and hydrothermal techniques has been used in the past few years to dissolve all kinds of inorganic (e.g. alumino silicate rocks) and organic materials rapidly for chemical analysis, we were the first to show its potential value for the synthesis of various ceramic powders [13-16]. In this paper, I show that this novel method is applicable to the synthesis of all unary, binary and multinary oxides by the appropriate control of pH, Eh, temperature, pressure and concentration of chemical species. In addition, this method is also found to be useful for the preparation of metal powders."

Froth flotation is a process commonly employed for the selective separation of phosphate from unwanted mineral. Column flotation has become widely accepted in the mineral processing industry, including phosphate industries, due to its ability to improve selectivity, lower operating cost, lower capital cost, and superior control. In this work, a hybrid model is developed that combines a physicochemical model with artificial neural networks. The physicochemical model is based on axial dispersion with first order collection rates. A new approach, in which both frankolite (the desired mineral containing phosphate) and gangue (undesired product) are modeled, enables prediction of grade of the recovered product. Thus, two basic parameters are required in this model: flotation rate constants for frankolite and gangue. Artificial neural networks are used to predict flotation rate constants. The model also takes into account the particle size distribution and predicts grade and recovery for each particle size range. The model then combines grade and recovery for each particle size range to determine the overall grade and recovery of the column. The model is validated against laboratory column data.

Dharwar craton in the southern Indian shield, comprises the Neoarchaean foreland in the west and a relatively younger accretionary complex composed of granitoids and intervening gold-bearing volcano-sedimentary belts. The Hutti schist belt hosting a major gold producing mine is situated in the northern part of the eastern Dharwar craton. It is a horse-shoe shaped structure comprising predominantly of pillowed metabasalt of tholeiitic composition with minor amounts of clastic sediments and felsic volcanic rocks. The belt is intruded on all sides by circular to tabular bodies of granites and granodiorite. Important gold deposits are located at Hutti, Hira-Buddini and Uti villages. Felsic volcanics in the Hutti belt occur as tabular bodies of quartz porphyry and breccia. Two of the gold-bearing reefs in the Hutti mine, Viz., Middle and Strike reefs are intimately associated with tabular sub-vertical sheets of mylonitic quartz-feldspar porphyry intruding pillowed metrabasalt. In Uti mine area, the felsic volcanics occurs as a tabular body. At Hira-Buddini, the felsic volcanic occur as a irregularly shaped sheet in pillowed metabasalt. Mineralogical and geochemical studies suggest that the felsic volcanic rock in Hutti mine area is a rhyolite and at Uti and Hira-Buddhini it is of dacite composition. Scheelite occurs as veins, veinlets, stringers and blebs along fracture planes of felsic volcanics in the Hutti mine area, whereas at Uti and Hira-Buddini it is insignificant. On the basis of spatial association of metabasalt and felsic volcanics and on geochemical grounds, we interpret that the felsic volcanics might have originated by the partial melting of basalt. REE patterns of the granite, granodiorite and metabasalt of Hutti are similar to each other indicating that they could be co-magmatic. However, REE in the Hutti felsic rocks is significantly higher than in Uti and particularly Hira-Buddini mine areas. The two felsic volcanic samples drawn away from the mineralized zone from all the three mine areas were analyzed for tungsten. In Hutti one sample assayed 0.15% and another 0.062%. At Uti, in one sample it assayed 0.056% and another less than 1 ppm, whereas at Hira-Buddini, it is less than 1 ppm in both the samples. The spatially associated basalt analyzed 23 to 235 ppm tungsten, whereas granites and granodiorites have very low (<1 ppm) tungsten. Therefore, the source of tungsten in the felsic volcanics of Hutti area could be traced to metabasalt. The absence of significant amount of tungsten in the felsic volcanic of Hira-Buddini could be attributed to the lack of REE enrichment compared to REE in Hutti and Uti felsic volcanics.

The rapid improvement of the airborne scintillometer and the perfection of its efficiency for counting low energy gamma radiation has made it possible to work out a technique to map in great detail the radiation pattern at the earth&apos;s surface. On such maps low radiation over certain areas appears to indicate the existence of oil accumulations, forming a pattern similar to that obtained by the geo-chemists. RADIOACTIVE analyses of samples from the surface of oil fields were carried out more than 10 years ago in Alberta by the alpha particle ioniza-tion chamber technique,&apos; but large enough tracts could not be covered in these investigations to make possible any evaluation of the method as a means of oil exploration. Considerable interest has recently been revived, however, as a result of certain striking advances which have been made in the instrumentation available -for the measurement of radioactivity. It is the object of this paper to indicate the nature of these improvements in radiation technology and then to describe the attempts that have been made to interpret the radioactive patterns obtained in the course of airborne recordings with the new instruments. Since the survey can be carried out from the air and records can be accumulated over vast areas in a short time, the result may easily lend itself to statistical treatment. Areas have been surveyed in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and Montana. Producing fields in Alberta and West Texas have been flown over several times in different directions, Fig. 1. The operations were then extended into unknown territory and drill holes were put down on the anomalies which looked promising. The results from these drillings were encouraging and have given hopes for the development of an entirely new method of oil exploration. Any large scale method for the survey of radioactive anomalies must be based on the measurement of gamma rays, as beta and alpha rays have much too short a range to be of any significance. Thus the essential improvement which has made the present stage of this work attainable is the development of new highly sensitive detectors for gamma radiation. In the past the only detectors of any consequence that were available were the ionization chamber and the geiger counter, but both of these suffer from the defect that only a small proportion of the gamma rays passing through the counter are detected, possibly 0.1 to 0.2 pct. The recent development of the scintillation counter2,3 has completely transformed the situation and has had a considerable impact on many branches of nuclear technology. The detection of alpha particles in zinc sulphide screens by visual observation of the individual scintillations which these particles produce dates back to the early spinthariscope of Rutherford and Crookes, but the combined use of an appropriate scintillating phosphor and photomultiplier tube had to await the technical development of the latter many years later. With this development came the modern era of the scintillation counter and a knowledge of phosphors which have a large light output under the bombarding action of gamma radiation. Some of these phosphors are relatively dense and are capable of stopping a large proportion of the incident gamma radiation. As the sensitive region is the whole volume of the crystal, a very high detection efficiency, 50 pct or more, can be obtained for medium energy gamma rays. Scintillation counters for geological purposes were first developed in 19494-6 in an attempt to utilize this remarkable improvement in efficiency, which has the attractive consequence that only a small portion of the normal background of the counter is due to cosmic radiation. In 1949 tests were made in northern Saskatchewan by Lundberg Explorations Ltd. with portable scintillation counters which gave excellent results in the search for uranium and served to indicate unknown uranium deposits in areas previously closely surveyed with geiger counters. Portable scintillometers (registered in Canada) are now commercially available and in regular use,&apos; and the adaptation of the instrument to radioactivity oil well logging has also been very successful.8 Initial attempts to measure radioactivity from aircraft with scintillation counters were made during this period in the same area and yielded most encouraging results. It would be appropriate to consider some specific requirements for airborne investigations. The essential problem to be met in the detection of any radioactive source is the necessity of obtaining a signal greater than the statistical fluctuations of the background counting rate for the instrument. It is possible to show that Nt>2k2 is the condition for detectability of a signal where N = average background counting rate for the detection. t = time constant of the counting rate meter, used to determine the average number of counts arriving in a certain predetermined time interval. N&apos; = average source counting rate at the detector. k = N/N&apos;, and N>>N&apos;. Sample values are given in Table I. Laboratory experiments were conducted on several materials to determine their suitability for the production of mineral wool. By blending raw charges in the proper proportions and in some instances by adding lime, acceptable wools were made from samples originating in Alaska, Florida, Texas, and Virginia. It was shown that satisfactory wools can be produced from many kinds of raw materials if the ratios of acidic and basic constituents are properly maintained. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has facilities at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., for examining and testing mineral-wool raw materials. Samples are evaluated through small-scale wool-blowing experiments, aided by petrographic, chemical, and physical analyses of the raw materials and finished wools. When enough experimental data have been accumulated they are made public through Government reports and periodicals. This report of investigations follows that published in 19513/ and presents test data on samples received and examined since 1951.

THE manufacture of iron and steel is one of the largest of our indus-tries; and in point of size of single plant and equipment certainly the biggest of all industries. By the general public it is generally con-sidered a prime example both of the marvelous technical advances achieved by modern science and engineering in the design and operation of equipment and of the efficiency of big business in the coordination of men and materials. Actually the operation of its basic processes has not changed significantly in either theory or fundamental design of equipment in the past 75 years. Though many other process indus-tries have been born and developed, and not seldom completely revolu-tionized, during this period, the primary processes of making iron and steel are still carried out along the lines laid down, and in the equipment originated so long ago, by Bessemer, Siemens and Martin, and subse-quently expanded to practically the modern scale by Carnegie, Schwab and Captain Bill Jones in the eighteen eighties and nineties. The application of the principles underlying the continuous counter-current physical and chemical interaction of solids, liquids and gases, which have been so successfully used in the rapid evolution of our chemical process industries, has been very largely lacking in the steel industry. In the days of -the last-named giants, especially Carnegie, the steel industry made great and rapid technical progress. Carnegie&apos;s ever driving idea (as later with Ford in the production of automobiles) was the finding of new and better ways of making cheaper steel. Carnegie himself was a steelman, and so long as he dominated the industry its technical progress. was rapid; and he, like Ford, was vastly successful financially as well, since his costs were continually being driven lower than those of his competitors by his advances in steelmaking technique.

The placement of chemically reactive mine wastes in mined out pits (æpit backfillingÆ) is increasingly seen by industry as best practice to manage long-term environmental risks. This is primarily because leaving wastes at the surface, or allowing pit lakes to develop, can result in unacceptable environmental risks. The costs and practicality of mitigation options such as installation of covers and community expectations of landform re-construction to achieve a post-mining, beneficial land use are also important drivers for pit backfilling.Pit backfilling can significantly reduce the post-closure risks to receiving environments, by minimising seepage due to tailings, acid/solute generating waste rock and/or salts derived from mine water treatment. Environmental risks are often highest where wastes are located close to the ground surface, due to relatively high rates of groundwater movement in near-surface aquifers and/or failure of engineered structures due to rainfall/erosion processes. Placement of these wastes at significant depth in pits, subject to mine planning and environmental assessment, can address these risks by increasing the path length and resistance from contaminant source to receptor, thus enhancing encapsulation of the wastes.Pit backfilling can also be cost-effective for mining companies. This is because existing pits are developed on the basis of an economic return and thus provide an opportunity to store tailings in an existing æengineered structureÆ at little or no incremental cost when compared with building and operating a new tailings or waste rock storage facility, often encompassing complex cover/drainage management systems. Key issues for consideration are mine planning, the long-term geotechnical behaviour of the wastes (eg consolidation of tailings which leads to release of acid/solutes in tailings porewaters), seepage rates to downstream receptors/agreed end point criteria and potential resource sterilisation. Internationally, mine closure guidelines are also showing a greater recognition of pit backfilling in the context of allowing mining companies to meet agreed post-closure land use objectives.In summary, pit backfilling can enhance the encapsulation of chemically reactive mine wastes and environment protection, and with agreement on post-closure beneficial land use, can also help to deliver post-closure benefits to communities.CITATION:Puhalovich, A A, 2012. Discussion of the paper of CLARENCE A. WRIGHT, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 130, October, 1917, pp. 1565 to 1591. H. A. WHEELER, St. Louis, Mo.-This paper by Mr. Wright is one of the most thorough and exhaustive studies that has been made of the milling practice in the Joplin district. Mr. Wright spent about two years there, in behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Missouri Geological Survey, and this paper, which is the result of his work, will, repay careful reading by any student of ore dressing and is invaluable to an operator in that district.

Quartz and phosphate grains from concentrates and ores from Atlantic Coastal Plain sediments often are wholly or partially coated by humates. Coatings were studied in situ using infrared microscopy, by transmission Fourier transform infrared of extracts, and scanning electron microscopy. The 14C age of the coatings is about 20,000 years, much younger than the mineral substrates. Coatings on double flotation concentrates indicate that the conditioning pH may be too low, allowing coated quartz grains to follow phosphate grains through beneficiation. Organic matter from coatings may contribute to processing problems as well as affect final product quality.
