Plant nutrients are obtained by plants from both the air and the soil. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Plants are capable of absorbing carbon dioxide directly from the air. Most of this nutrient comes from the air, although some carbon dioxide is absorbed by soil water and taken into the plant as liquid. Growing plants use more water than any other substance. Plant nutrients in the soil dissolve in soil water; soil water entering the plant carries nutrients into the plant structure. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. The inorganic or mineral portion of the nutrients which plants require comes from the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants is usually less than 5% of their weight, and this mineral requirement, usually lacking in the soil, must be provided by fertilizers. Proper fertilization of a soil to improve its mineral level and productivity is the basis for the fertilizer industry (Thomas, 1960). There are 13 essential plant nutrients which often must be added to soils or plants and are generally considered as fertilizer minerals. These nutrients are divided into the categories: primary minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium); secondary minerals (calcium, magnesium, sulfur); and micro or trace minerals (boron, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum, chlorine). Further, cobalt is often added to fertilizers. Although it is not considered to be an essential plant nutrient, it is essential to animal health and is often applied to forages as a fertilizer constituent. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all nutrient carriers supply that nutrient in a chemical form which will be available to the plant. Thus, a product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient carrier. Fertilizer Industry Scope Until about 1900 demands for higher crop yields were met simply by bringing new agricultural lands into cultivation. Since that time great progress has been made in increasing yields through fertilization and improved varieties and cultural practices. The importance of the fertilizer industry to the economy and welfare of the U.S. is widely recognized. [Fig. 1] illustrates the relationship of lime and fertilizers to crop yields. In terms of tons of fertilizer products, the growth of the industry has been phenomenal, particularly between 1950 and 1970. Table 1 shows the increase in fertilizer usage. Primary Plant Nutrients in Fertilizers Primary minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) are designated as such because of their significance to plant growth. The air in three U.S. underground coal mines has been sampled. The data developed show the relative importance of the various pollutants and quantify the need for control. Total respirable particulate matter (TRPM) was found to be the critical pollutant (the one requiring the most dilution for control). TRPM is considered to be "respirable coal dust" by procedures approved for sampling in U.S. underground coal mines. However, this "respirable coal dust" also includes diesel particulate matter (DPM) and particulate from other sources. While "respirable coal dust" was the critical pollutant, Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that more than half of this "respirable coal dust" was DPM. The DPM in the samples ranged from 22 to 152% of the 2 mg/m3 limit for respirable coal dust. Thus DPM was the critical pollutant using the 2 mg/m3 respirable coal dust limit. SO2 gas produced by the combustion of diesel fuel containing sulfur was the second-most critical pollutant. Characteristic curve slope (CCS) values were calculated to determine the quantitites of the various pollutants generated per unit of diesel haulage activity. Mine 1 had the highest TRPM CCS values with 29 mg/m3/%C02 for the Ramcar and 57 mg/m3/%C02 for the Haulageway location. The highest coal particulate CCS measured was 30 mg/m3/%CO2 and the highest diesel particulate CCS measured was 27 mg/m3/ %C02. Both of these high values were measured in the Mine 1 haulageway location. Calculations were made to determine the controlling CO2 concentrations (CCC) at which all other measured pollutants would be within their limits. These CCC values, which, for the mines sampled, were based on TRPM, varied from a low of about 0.07% for the Mine 1 haulageway location, to a high of about 0.15% for the Mine 2 Ramcar and haulageway locations. Weekly average CO2 concentrations measured in these mines ranged from 0.09 to 0.11 % for the Ramcar, from 0.05 to 0.09% for the haulageway, and from 0.08 to 0.11 % for the return. The concentrations of TRPM ranged from 1 and 2 mg/m3 in mine areas frequented by personnel, and to greater than 4 mg/m3 in returns where personnel are not exposed.

The SIMAN (SIMulation ANalysis) computer language is a general-purpose, discrete-continuous simulation language for modeling a variety of multi-component systems. The language has been described by its author in a textbook (Pegden, 1985) and in a paper (Pegden, 1986) and is available in a mainframe version, a minicomputer version and a microcomputer version. The language was designed for and has been extensively used for modeling manufacturing systems but possesses many features that are advantageous in the modeling of mining materials handling systems. Consequently, the authors have applied the language to the simulation of an open pit shovel/truck operation to test its usefulness for simulating mine materials handling systems. This paper presents a short background on simulation languages, the capabilities and modeling framework of the SIMAN language, a description of the application of SIMAN to a shovel-track operation and some results and conclusions on the use of the language for mining materials handling systems.

ROBERT VAN ARSDALE NORRIS, who died at his home at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on April 20, 1928, was born at Newark, N. J., on May 2, 1864, of parents who were direct descendants of such sterling New Eng-landers as Governor William Bradford, John Alden and Timothy Dwight. He went to the Collegiate School in New York and then to the Colum-bia School of Mines where he graduated with the class of 1885, having among class-mates A. S. Dwight, E. N. En-gelhardt, H. L. Hollis, G. B. Lee, Richard Moldenke, Wil-bur Sanders, Joseph Struth-ers, E. A. Wiltsee, and I. H. Woolson. His marked ability even among so many men of unusual ability caused him to be chosen as assistant to Pro- fessor Munroe in the summer school of mining and survey-ing immediately after gradua-tion, and he shortly after was also inspector of dredging operations on the Maurice River improvement work, Millville, N. J. The follow- ing year he worked in the chemical laboratory of Herman Behr in Brooklyn, and toward the end of 1886 he joined the staff of the Pennsylvania R. R. Coal Co. and the Susquehanna Coal Co. as assistant engineer. Six years later he was made principal assistant en- gineer and in 1900 he was made chief engineer of these companies. In 1904, he withdrew from them and estab- lished an office as a consulting engineer at Wilkes- Barre, later taking his son, Robert V., Jr., into partner- ship with him. They acted as consulting engineers for the coal department of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western R. R. Co., the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., Coke Bros. & Go., Inc., the coal department of the Pennsyl- vania R. R. Co., the Wilkes-Barre & Hazelton R. R. Co., the Sterling Salt Co., and others, specializing in ex- amination and appraisal of coal properties, and also matters of Federal taxation.

Recent studies estimate the depletion mid-point (dmp) for conventional natural gas to be reached around year 2022, and for conventional oil to be reached around year 2017. These numbers are based on simplified assumptions of unchanged demand and do not include increasing reserves from discovery of new fields and also do not include a shifting of resources to reserves e.g. due to an increasing oil price (Gerling et al., 2005). Anyhow, these prospects require conventional hydrocarbons to be substituted in the near future.

Develop a simple and economical technique for determining the absolute stresses and the change of stress on the surface of roofs, floors, or walls in miners. Approach Use a commercially-available, permissible, Whittemore-type gage to determine the stress at the surface of a mine opening and to monitor any stress changes that might take place. How It Works The following equipment is used: ? One steel templet (for laying out a 60° rosette on the: rock surface). See first photograph. ? One 3/8-inch rock drill bit for drilling holes for the rosette pins. ? Six stainless-steel rosette pins. ? One Whittemore-type mechanical strain gage. ? One drill (not shown). ? The poor flotation response of many coals has in the past been attributed to such factors as differences in rank, differences in degree of oxidation, differences in petrographic composition, or slime coatings. The present work shows that while all these factors undoubtedly influence flotation, the size distribution of the feed may override these. Evidence is presented which shows how this factor can lead to substantial losses of coarse coal (>250 µm)from a coal which would normally be considered amenable to flotation. Reasons for this loss of flotation response are suggested together with means of overcoming the problem.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines assessment of crude oil and associated gas production and reserves that would result from different drilling efforts in the lower or contiguous 48 States during the 1972-85 period. The drilling effort was based upon five growth rate assumptions from the 1971 level. Additions to crude oil reserves were computed for nine cases resulting from the use of three equations for findings per foot drilled and three constant revision factors. The results indicate that the United States will not become self-sufficient in crude oil production by 1985 and also illustrate the lead time required to reverse the decline in oil production. Discussion is limited to three of the nine cases to provide high, intermediate, and low results. More emphasis is on the intermediate case because it is indicative of the most probable trends. The methodology and statistical data are included in the appendices.

The generation and transportation of the airborne dust are mainly governed by the velocity and the movement pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face. Generally speaking, the higher the air velocity, the more the airborne dust will be generated and the longer the period of the dust of certain size will be carried away from the source. In order to effectively prevent the production and the spread of the airborne dust, The airborne dust concentration distribution in the longwall face must be known in advance. Before the dust concentration distribution can he predicted theoretically with confidence, the air velocity distribution pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face area must be determined first. However, the complicated, time-dependent and unpredictable mining conditions along and around the face area make the theoretical studies of the problem rather difficult. For instance, one of the factors commonly affecting the air velocity distribution at the longwall face is the air leakage, either into or from the gob area. The leakage quantity and the location of occurrence differ from mine to mine, face to face, and time to time. They depend not only on the compactness of the caved roof fragments in the gob, but also on the degree of obstructions in the working space and in the return entry. Another obstacle to the theoretical studies about the velocity distrbution is the complicated boundary conditions of the ventilated spnce which is very difficult to represent accurately in mathematical forms. In this paper, the air velocity distributions measured in four longwall faces are presented. A statistical model for each longwall face is also derived for prediction of air velocity distribution in the longwall face.

Various controlled and ambient tests were undertaken to evaluate the performance of a variety of digital heat stress monitors, psychrometers and simpler temperature/relative humidity data loggers that measure, or determine, such parameters as: dry-bulb, natural wet-bulb, psychrometric wet-bulb and globe temperatures. In this comparison, funded by the Deep Mining Research Consortium, it has been found that all the instruments can competently measure dry-bulb temperature but the accuracy of other sensors could introduce significant uncertainty. For example the quality of relative humidity sensors and failure to correct for the barometric pressure difference in deep mines, directly impacts upon the calculation of psychrometric wet-bulb. The comparison has shown that the response of dry-bulb and globe temperature sensors can vary widely under different radiant heat conditions; however this would be negligible in most mines. Of more concern is the differing performance of the natural-wet bulb sensors especially at low relative humidity and low air velocity. Furthermore, from these tests and the currently available theory it was not possible to determine if any of the natural-wet bulb instruments measured that value correctly or validate any relationship between psychrometric and natural wet-bulb temperature at low air speeds where their difference is greatest. Consequently the uninformed use of some of the commercially available environmental heat stress monitors or derivations from other instruments could provide erroneous results affecting the work load category that can be accommodated or the rest ratio regime required.

The objective of this program was to determine by laboratory experiments the kinetics and mechanics of the reactions that produce acid in coal mine drainage. The program was divided into three phases: In Phase I, five coil mines, representative of Appalachian coal mines, were chosen for sampling and an experimental design was identified suited to accomplish the program objectives. In Phase II, the five mines were sampled and test protocols applied. The results showed most pyrite weathering to be based on oxidation in the presence of water. Iron bacteria, especially Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, catalyzed the rate of pyrite weathering by a factor of three. An increase in initial iron concentration in a system that modeled the nine environment acted to inhibit bacterial catalysis of weathering. In Phase III, five tailings piles were sampled and the material obtained was used to evaluate this method of bacterial catalysis inhibition. The evaluation verified method effectiveness; inhibition of over 80% of the release of weathering products was observed.

Due to the planned deepening of the NY Harbor, NYCEDC/NYCDEP is planning to replace two existing water lines between Brooklyn and Staten Island with one deeper water pipe. The crossing, just north of the Verrazanno Bridge is 1.75 miles long. The new pipeline will be tunneled using gasketed concreted segmented liners. Apressurized face machine will be used through the soft ground. This will be the first subaqueous application using this technology in New York City. This paper discusses the planning, design and risk issues associated with the crossing and the challenging soil conditions that resulted in the decision to use a pressurized face machine.

El proceso comprende 6 fases: En la primera se debe encontrar las provincias metalogenéticas que suponen la existencia de yacimientos importantes a gran profundidad. La segunda fase determina la naturaleza, posición, orientación, longitud y costo de los trabajos de exploración primaria, tales como socavones, sondajes diamantinos, trincheras, etc., encaminados a probar la existencia de mineralización comercial en profundidad. La tercera fase concreta la posición, dimensiones y profundidad del objetivo, reduciendo a un mínimo el costo total de los trabajos de exploración primaria requeridos para probar la existencia o no existencia de un yacimiento comercial. La cuarta responde a la vigilancia y atención del geológo. La quinta fase comprende e inicio de una vida operativa."

The production of soda ash from natural sources is one of the United States' oldest industries. The London Company, which financed the settlement of Jamestown, in the fall of 1608 exported in its first cargo from Virginia " . . . trials of pitch, tar, glass, frankincense, and soap-ashes."1 This last product, a crude mixture of sodium and potassium carbonates obtained by the burning of wood in iron pots, was the commercial soda ash of its day, used in the infant soap, glass, and bleaching industries. Besides having a good cash value, its production helped to clear the land, and it was a compact, easily shipped commodity. The extra high potassium content of these American "pot-ashes" gave them an added market as a fertilizer, a field that they dominated until the opening of the Strassfurt deposits in 1860. This form of natural soda ash disappeared forever from commercial importance with the introduction of the Le Blanc process (1791), and later the Solvay process for manufacturing soda ash. The Solvay process was rapidly accepted in the United States, and has accounted for most of the country's soda ash production since 1884. It was not until the western part of the country began to be developed that natural soda ash was again produced. A number of lakes, playas, and springs west of the Rocky Mountains were found to be rich in this mineral, and climatic conditions were ideal for its easy recovery by solar evaporation. The production of natural soda ash from these deposits has become a steadily growing industry in the United States. Production A summary of the production and value of natural sodium carbonates in the United States is presented in Table 1. Prior to 1927 the principal output came from several different companies at Owens Lake, California. Then production at Searles Lake, California, began to [ ] increase until it became the most important source. A record $19.7 billion in minerals was produced by United States industries in 1963. This was some $800 million above the previous high established in 1962. Preliminary statistics compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines show that most metals, nonmetals, and fuels gained both in value and volume of production. The 1963 total represents the largest value increase since 1956 and continues an upward trend begun in 1959. Product.ion and value of all mineral fuels rose, with anthracite registering a remarkable 20% value increase. Nonmetals advanced 591 in value, gains exceeding losses by 213 to 1 among individual commodities. Heavier industrial demand and the settling of labor difficulties were among the factors contributing to increased output of such materials as iron ore, bauxite, molybdenum, lead, and zinc, which accounted for most in€ the growth in metal output. Silver prices continued to rise and, as a result, production value of that metal gained 132,.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the Deserado Mine computerized monitoring and control system, located in Rangely, Colorado, to acquire knowledge about the overall costs and benefits of mine monitoring systems. The Deserado system is a complex system monitoring environmental parameters, electrical power, and operation of all mine equipment, and controlling the entire conveyor haul age system. This paper discusses the evaluation of the Deserado monitoring system from initial design through system installation and operation. It also examines the costs, benefits, and performance of the monitoring system.

The dry methods of assaying mercury-ores and other combinations of mercury all rest upon the volatility of this metal as a beginning. After the separation of the mercury in the form of vapor from the matrix upon which the assay is performed, the mercurial vapors are either condensed upon cold surfaces or received upon a gold plate into which the mercury is absorbed.

THE task of establishing a new corrosion testing laboratory is more difficult than it need be because there is very little information on the subject available in the literature. Many articles describing tests and results may be found, but a wide search will unearth only passing remarks on the different types of equipment that may be selected for accelerated corrosion tests. An article describing some of the apparatus needed in a corrosion laboratory should be of help to those interested in building a new unit or in making additions to an old one. In May of this year, the writer was given the assignment of equipping a laboratory for general corrosion testing, to form a part of the new Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratories of the Department of Mines and Resource~ at Ottawa. With the help of senior members of the staff, along with what could be gathered from other sources, a list of necessary equipment was compiled and a plan for arranging it in the rooms was decided upon. Where possible, the apparatus was constructed in the excellent machine shops at the disposal of this Department, while the rest was placed on order with the manufacturers.

The results of potential measurements between 1) a titaniurn electrode in NaCl-TiCl, melts and a graphite-cizlorine reference electrode and 2) a titanium electrode in NaC1-Nu "melts and a graphite-chlorine reference electrode show that the following relationship expresses the equilibrium relationship between the TiCl, and the dissolved metallic sodium concentrations, expressed in mole fraction units, in dilute NaCl welts at 850°C. The results of potential measurenments between a graphite electrode in NaCl-TiCl, melts that were saturated with TiCl, and a graphite-chlorine reference electrode, when combined with the standard free energy data given in literature, gave the following expression for the equilibrium relationship between the TiCl, and TiCl, concentrations, expressed in mole fraction units, in dilute NaCl melts at 850°C. These relationships are for melts in equilibrium with pure titanium. In impure systems, less sodiurn and more TiCI, can be copresent with a given concentration of TiCl,. AFTER 10 years of existence, the titanium metal industry still relies on the original Kroll and the sodium reduction processes for the only important means of converting titanium-bearing ores to titanium metal via production of titanium tetrachloride as an intermediate. Through years of modification and development these two processes have evolved to a point where any further major economic advances in the field of titanium metal production must be achieved through implementation of processes which are distinct departures from simple magnesium or sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride. Concurrently with the refinement of the Kroll and sodium reduction processes, industries and government have sponsored research and development in the field of producing titanium by electrolysis of oxides,' carbides,' and halides3'4 in fused salt media. However, the incomplete understanding of the physical chemistry of fused salt systems has in many cases hindered the development of promising new titanium production processes to the point where they will have a clear advantage over the processes presently employed. Fortunately the volume of information on fused salt physical and electrochemistry is increasing at an accelerating pace. The first approaches tbward investigating the electrochemical behavior of fused salt systems have been the measurements of equilibrium potentials of metals immersed in melts containing their halides.' Some work on the kinetics of fused salt electrochemical processes has been reported.'09" Some descriptions of the structural composition of fused salt systems are also available. The work described herein is a continuation of the study of metal electrode potentials in fused salts. Specifically, this contribution to the growing store of fused salt chemistry information presents a description of the equilibrium relationships between the concentrations of titanium dichloride, titanium trichloride, and metallic sodium in fused sodium chloride. The investigation of the titanium dichloride-titanium trichloride equilibrium relationships is not completely new. Kellog and Krye and Melgren and opie15 have presented the results of chemical analysis of salts containing titanium chlorides. Flengas and lngrahaml' have published the results of an investigation of these equilibrium relationships obtained by measurement of electrode potentials in a fused NaCl-KC1 mixture. The investigation described herein differed from that of Flengas and Ingraham principally in the use of straight NaCl as the solvent in place of the more costly and more difficult to purify mixture. This investigation was conducted in three parts. First, the equilibrium potentials of titanium in sodium chloride containing known concentrations of titanium dichloride were measured. A graphite-chlorine electrode was employed as reference. Second, the equilibrium potentials of titanium immersed in sodium chloride containing known concentrations of elemental sodium were measured. Third, the equilibrium potentials of graphite immersed in titanium tetrachloride-saturated sodium chloride containing known concentrations of titanium trichloride were measured. The results of these three related investigations are presented in the above order. The results are combined with the thermodynamic properties of titanium chlorides and sodium chloride, obtained from literature, to give the titanium dichloride-titanium trichloride-elemental sodium equilibrium concentration relationships. Any man-made structure will eventually decay, but we are basically concerned with the prevention of corrosion within a fairly limited time span. How corrosion can be minimized by design, the removal of oxides and a careful choice of paint systems is discussed, and mention is made of the electrical nature of most anticorrosive systems. Also discussed are the characteristics of certain paint binders and how mechanical properties will differ for various environments. Corrosion of a substrate by acidic breakdown products of some paints is mentioned in conjunction with a discussion on convenience versus ultimate performance. A brief mention is made of the three main components of a paint system, and the principal types of paint are placed in broad categories, with the main strength and weaknesses of each type listed.
