The science of predicting future water quality at hardrock mine sites has been practiced for at least the past 30 years. As part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), mines and other industrial facilities in the United States on federal land are required to estimate impacts to the environment, including direct impacts to water quality and indirect impacts that are later in time but still reasonably foreseeable (Kempton and Atkins, 2000; Bolen, 2002). Facilities on private land in the United States may also be subjected to State or federal processes that may or may not require prediction of potential impacts to water resources. Other countries have followed a similar approach, largely based on the requirements of NEPA. A wide array of scientific approaches has been used to predict water quality that could result from construction, proposed expansion, or other action at an industrial facility. In this study, we review the methods and models used to predict water quality at hardrock mine sites, with an emphasis on uncertainties associated with these techniques. Because water quantity and quality are interrelated, methods and models used to predict water quantity will also be discussed, but the emphasis will be on how these methods relate to water quality. This study brings together technical information on water-quality predictions at mine sites in a single paper, and attempts to present a straight-forward approach to using and evaluating the results of the methods and models used to predict water quality at mine sites. Approaches developed primarily in the United States, Canada, and Australia and applied in these countries and in other parts of the world, especially in the last 10 years, are discussed, and the format of the study is geared toward use by regulators of hardrock mines. The approach and results of this study could also be used by environmental managers at mine sites and community groups, and allows for the creation of a checklist for prediction methodology used at mine sites.

After a short description of geology and gateroad roof support technology in the German coalfields the development of roof bolting as primary roof support is presented. Based on geotechnical parameters, different strategies used for roof support at depths of 3,300-4,600 ft. are explained. Strict quality management and a strict monitoring program are part of the entry development. A number of recently finished developments are described such as the introduction of standardized bolts and accelerated resin systems. An outlook of future goals is presented. The paper concludes with a comparison of roof control systems at RAG's mines in the US and Germany.

It is a well established fact that 60 per cent of all accidents in coal mines occur from falls of roof and coal at or in the proximity of the working face. Notwithstanding that this is well known, and has been frequently discussed by mining men, this seems to be the irreducible minimum. It is even said by those in a position to know that the percentage stated is increasing. With this, information before us it would seem that not enough attention is being given to close supervision at the working face, and until this is done we may expect to continue experiencing an increase in the accidents in this area. No workman generally feels that it is more important to finish loading a car of coal than to set a timber for protection, and many accidents happen from this source, not from a lack of knowledge of the dangerous conditions existing, but negligence in taking remedies necessary to remove the danger. It is true that nearly all state laws require the mine foreman or his assistant to visit each working face every day, but with the constantly changing conditions on account of the advance of the working faces, these daily visits may be entirely inadequate to discover possible dangers and prevent accidents. The obvious remedy then is closer and more systematic inspection and supervision of the working faces. Many accidents are caused in mines on account of not enough clearance between the rib and track or between timber and track. On all main haulage ways. there should be a space of at least 30 inches between the rib and track, or timber and track, and on all rooms not less than two feet should be left between the track and upright timbers.. A great deal has been said and written with regard to systematic timbering. We doubt very much the feasibility of adopting any standard of timbering that would be suitable for all roof conditions, and any such system in our opinion would not tend to cause a decrease in the number of accidents. The proper place to put up a prop, regardless of whether it conforms to any established system, is under a piece of loose roof. No habit is becoming more prevalent among miners and other mine workers than wearing gloves, principally flimsy canvas gloves, which afford no protection to the wearers and are the direct cause of many hand injuries. If gloves must be worn, and no doubt they will be as the habit has become well established, then they should be made from some heavy material and should fit the hands fairly snug.

"Rotary kilns are used for a variety of mineral processing operations. Hatch makes use of a kiln model developed from first principles to evaluate designs for its clients. This tool has been applied to a variety of pyrometallurgical applications, including ferrovanadium, nickel carbonate, nickel laterite, iron ore reduction, and spodumene (lithium) production.This paper illustrates the application of numerical optimization techniques in combination with the kiln model in the interrogation of a generic iron ore reduction process. The fundamental modelling concepts are explained, followed by a description of the optimization approach. The results show how the combination of the two methods, with modern computing power, can generate a large number of viable design and operating candidates."

Pt-Bi intermetallic Nanoparticles was prepared by the polymer-anchor method. The electron micrographs shows that the dimensions of particles sharply distribute in the range of about 3-6 nm. The elemental ratio of Pt/Bi in the bimetallic particles is estimated by the electron probe microanalysis method. Pt-Bi intermetallic Nanoparticles shows a higher activity for the ORR than pure Pt. No significant dependence of the oxidation currents on the rotating speed of the electrode could be observed in the presence of methanol. This clearly indicates that the Pt-Bi is inactive to methanol.

The sulphur shortage that has occurred in the past two years has directed attention more and more toward sour natural gas reserves, Wellhead values of sour gas vary widely depending upon the acid gas composition, location, market conditions, and necessary processing charges. Preparation of a saleable residue gas is considerably more involved and expensive than that normally encountered in treating a sweet gas. Recent revisions in sales gas specifications have increased capital costs and processing charges. The presence of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide in a natural gas contributes to shrinkage factors that may approach 50%. Fuel required by the gas sweetening process and sulphur slant tail gas incineration also contributes to a further reduction in the volume of residue gas available for sale. The additional processing facilities involving gas sweetening, mercaptan removal, expanded utilities, sulphur recovery and sulphur handling, all demand additional operating and maintenance staff. A favorable sulphur market under certain conditions may justify the processing of sour gas whereby sulphur is either a by-product or a co-product, Five typical cases involving different compositions of sour gas are presented for evaluation. THE origin of various types and groups of ore deposits was some years ago a subject of much controversy. To this statement the copper-nickel deposits near Sudbury afforded no exception. Not since the Report of the Ontario Nickel Commission, in 1917, has there been any serious discussion of the origin of this very important group. This may be because, from the opening-up of Murray mine by the British America Nickel Corporation until the recent work at Frood mine, no new ore-body of importance has been developed in the district. The controversy fifteen or twenty years ago between those who favoured the theory of magmatic segregation, among whom Dr. A. P. Coleman was the leading exponent, and those who considered that most, if not all of the Sudbury deposits could more satisfactorily be accounted for by the theory of replacement, will be remembered by many members of the Institute. Perhaps, as too often happens in controversial discussion, each side tended to overemphasize the importance of those geological phenomena which seemed to be most easily accounted for by the theory it favoured. A more balanced view would perhaps admit that replacement was probably predominant in the formation of most of the offset deposits, and magmatic segregation in that of most of the marginal deposits . But there is danger in generalization. Each body of ore should be studied by itself, and no general conclusion of this kind should be allowed to warp the judgment in making such a study.

Raw material fed into a processing or refining plant is required to be uniform in composition for several reasons. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to the process. The problem is more complicated in the case of multiple ore sources. The idea behind the research is that theoretical blending ratios can serve not only to meet predefined specific criteria but also to reduce grade fluctuations of variables under consideration. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a quadratic programming problem, whose objective function is in quadratic form and constraints are linear. A case study was conducted on a data set from an iron orebody to demonstrate the technique. The objective was to minimize the blend variability in terms of each variable (in this study, iron, silica, alumina and lime) grade of ores extracted in three different production faces. The stockpile capacity, lower and upper limits of each variable satisfying operational requirements and non-negativity were constrained to the model. A modified simplex method developed by Wolfe was used for solving the blending and homogenization problem. The promising results can be used as apart of the stacking and reclaiming design. Ontario has a diverse industrial mineral resource base including abundant resources of structural industrial minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone and dolostone. These resources are used in the production of aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, lime, cement and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Paleozoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were over 140 million metric tonnes of aggregates produced in 1985, approximately 115 million tonnes of which was produced in southern Ontario with the remainder being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. The structural industrial minerals account for over 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production, with the remaining 20% of the value king accounted for by the non-structural minerals being led by salt which is produced in southwestern Ontario. A host of other non-structural industrial minerals are known but production is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite and by-product metallurgical sulphur products (Fig. 1). Location and Market Area Major production is in the area closest to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and north-central United States. In general, with the abundant variety and widespread resources of industrial minerals and the large population within 400 miles of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's 9 million population accounts for about 35% of the entire gross domestic product of Canada of $476.361 billion dollars in 1985. This equates to about 113 of the nation's buying power being within a 200 km (125 miles) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well developed industrial minerals industry fulfilling most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario, as well as a subsidiary demand in neighbouring provinces and states.

Michoacan?s beach sands with interesting concentrations of ilmenite were studied to produce titanium by hydrometallurgical techniques. Nevertheless, among titanium species, there are different additional components of Michoacan?s beach sands which could be of interesting applications. Some of them are likely to be applied for the manufacture of nanocrystalline ceramics. Although, the most applied mineral dressing to treat these kind of sands, that contain magnetic species (i.e., ilmenite, magnetite), is a combination of gravity separation and magnetic separation, it could be of a great deal of benefit to apply the information regarding the surface characteristics of the sands? components, in order to study the application of flotation technologies to separate selectively those species with commercial value.

A small but significant proportion of the waste associated with these deposits presents problems due to its ability to spontaneously combust and react with explosives resulting in premature detonations.

but, returning to South Africa, for the next two years he was assistant general manager of the Simmer Deep Gold Mining Co., at Johannesburg. In June, 1911, he returned to New Zealand as general manager and consulting engineer for the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand, at Reefton, which position he held at the time of his admission to the Institute in 1914. Early in September, 1915, he left New Zealand for active service in France. Corporal Sheppard B. Gordy Sheppard B. Gordy, born in Ansonia, Conn., in 1889, graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1910 and with the degree of E. M. in 1912. He entered the employ of the Braden Copper Co. immediately on his graduation and remained with this company four years, working up through the various grades to assistant foreman and foreman to one of the individual mines. The last year he was in its employ, he acted as general mine foreman. He was for a short time with the Chile Exploration Co. and then went with the Andes Exploration Co. (Anaconda) and remained with the latter, doing mine exploration and development work, until he sailed for home in June, 1918, to give a more personal and active service to his country in her need. He declined a tender of induction into an officers' training camp, at the urgent request of Professor McClelland supplemented by Mr. Potter, because they demonstrated to his satisfaction that he could give more valuable service to his country in helping out with the aircraft production. Being within the draft age, in order to carry out this plan, it was necessary for him to be called by his Local Board and sent to camp. This call came Aug. 26. Two weeks before that time he had gone to Dayton, Ohio, to begin the study of aircraft production, and was sent by the Dayton Board to Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio, where he died of pneumonia on Oct. 9. Lieutenant Thomas Clarence Gorman Thomas C. Gorman, a lieutenant in the Second Tunnelling Company of the Canadian Engineers, was killed in France on Mar. 18, 1918. He was resting in his sleeping hut and was in the act of writing a letter when a bursting shell killed him.

It is difficult to give a refining outline that may be followed for any and all combinations of the platinum metals; different combinations require different methods of attack. This paper does not pretend to go into all of the reactions of the metals of the platinum group, but will outline the commercial refining of platinum scrap. Typical Platinum Scrap As a concrete case, let us take 100 oz. of miscellaneous scrap, made up of jewelry scrap, dental scrap and laboratory ware. This lot will contain some platinum, palladium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium, gold, silver and copper. The first problem is to get all of the metals in solution. If the scrap is principally platinum, palladium and gold, a treatment with aqua regia is the course to pursue; but if the scrap contains alloys high in iridium or ruthenium, aqua regia will act too slowly. In the case in hand, we are going to presume that we have scrap high in iridium and ruthenium, and proceed accordingly. Obtaining Residue A Place the scrap, together with six times its weight of granulated test lead, in a solid carbon crucible. This crucible may be placed inside a clay graphite crucible packed with charcoal, to prevent the excessive oxidation of the carbon crucible by the furnace blast. Place a tight cover on the carbon crucible; heat gradually to a good red heat and allow it to soak in the heat for 4 or 5 hr. After the leaded mass is cool, dissolve in dilute nitric acid (1-6) on a steam plate or sand bath. This dissolves practically all of the lead and most of the palladium, silver and copper, together with seme of the platinum and rhodium, and leaves the iridium, ruthenium, gold, and most of the rhodium and platinum as a finely divided residue. Siphon off the clear solution and treat the residue with another portion of dilute nitric acid to insure the solution of the lead and copper. The second nitric acid solution is added to the first, and the residue is filtered on suction and washed thoroughly with hot

In response to the continuing problem of noise induced hearing loss NIHL among mine workers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH has conducted numerous noise surveys in coal preparation plants. The research, consisting of worker dose monitoring, task observations, and equipment noise profiling, was completed in eight separate preparation plants. Worker dose monitoring was conducted for three shifts in most cases. Workers experiencing higher than allowable doses were task-observed for one full shift to correlate dose to noise source(s). Finally, noise levels on all floors, and in lunchrooms and control rooms, were characterized. Results indicate that only workers who routinely spend a significant portion of their shift in the plants (away from the control rooms) are susceptible to overexposure from noise. Certain pieces of equipment (screens, centrifuges, sieve bends) are the loudest primary noise sources responsible for the worker noise exposures.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch and small-scale continuous selective flotation tests of barite-fluorspar ores from two deposits near Marion, Ky., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial grade fluorspar and barite concentrates. The lignin sulfonate-sodium fluoride method of floating the fluorspar successfully produced acid-grade fluorspar concentrates. Flotation of the barite from the fluorspar tailing using petroleum sulfonate collector yielded concentrates suitable for use in compounding oil-well drilling mud. The fluorspar and barite recoveries were about 82 and 85 percent, respectively.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the thirteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The description of the deposits developed is followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

As a result of the Farmington explosion, the U. S. Bureau of Mines commissioned the National Academy of Engineering to a determine what steps could be taken in a short time frame to significantly reduce fatalities as a result of underground fire and explosion in coal mines. Three areas were named by the Academy as having the greatest potential; survival, communications, and rescue. The Bureau subsequently awarded a $3-5 million contract to the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the development of prototype equipment and procedures. These were recently tested in a simulated emergency situation and will be delivered soon. Contractor recommendations for utilization and for further development effort will be studied and appropriate action taken.
