Natural sodium sulfate is obtained from both brines and solid deposits. The brines almost always contain other salts with sodium chloride predominating. They may be obtained from surface occurrences, such as Great Salt Lake or from shallow subterranean deposits. Althought many sodium sulfate minerals are known to exist, only three are of commercial significance. These are thenardite, the anhydrous salt; mirabilite, the decahydrate; and glauberite, the double salt of sodium and calcium sulfate. The reader is referred to Weisman (1983) for details on mineralogy and geology of sodium sulfate minerals. Sodium sulfate deposits, either in the form of brine or solid minerals, are found in many parts of the world. Natural sources, by far, provide the primary supply of commercial grades in Canada, Mexico, Spain, and probably in the U.S.S.R., Chile, Argentina, and Turkey. In the United States, production of natural material and synthetic (including by-product) are about equal in volume and have been for many years.

Desde 1938, el estudio de La Brunquita, especie de mineral del zinc, ha conllevado diversos estudios y pruebas de flotación no solo a nivel peruano, sino internacional, a fin de determinar el procedimiento económico para su explotación industrial. En este aspecto, el objeto del presente texto señala los factores, estados problemáticos, como los resultados obtenidos durante del tratamiento del mineral en la mina de Cercapuquio. Entre los factores destacados encontramos: abundancia y ley alta del mineral, cotizaciones actuales en el mercado internacional y la labor de los técnicos. Respecto de las condiciones problemáticas que refiere las características del mineral, tenemos el difícil control rápido de la marcha de flotación, degradación del mineral e imprecisión entre el mineral y la ganga, dado el tamaño de las partículas del mineral. Finalmente, los resultados obtenidos en este proceso, muestra que para el tratamiento de pre-concentración aplicado a los minerales finos de Cercapuquio, se necesita la hidratación ya que facilita la flotación posterior del mineral. Asimismo estas operaciones de pre-concentración no solo aumentan la ley de alimentación a los molinos y la capacidad de las plantas de beneficio, sino también que modificando la composición física del mineral, mejoran las condiciones del tratamiento posterior.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more. promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

Extraction of silica from the taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic range by high temperature digestion in caustic solutions has been described.1,2 The ores consist essentially of hematite, goethite, and microcrystalline quartz, detailed descriptions of which appear in the literature.1,3 It is the purpose of this communication to describe some results obtained from a laboratory investigation of an alternative method, that of sintering the ore with sodium carbonate followed by water extraction of the sodium silicate produced. This is analogous to the Deville-Péchiney4,5 soda ash sinter process for the production of alumina from bauxites in which soluble sodium aluminates are formed. Raw mixes of the desired composition were prepared from 10.0 g minus 200 mesh samples of taconite and sintered in nickel crucibles in a muffle furnace controlled to within ±10°F of the operating temperatures. The resulting sinters were pulverized and then leached in distilled water with continuous agitation for 30 minutes at 95°C. The suspensions were vacuum filtered and the residues dried, ignited and weighed. Iron assays on the ignited samples were made by the standard dichromate procedure after dissolution in hydrochloric acid. State-of-the art precious metal recovery practice uses cyanide leach solutions to extract the valuable constituents from ores, wastes, and tailings. Activated carbon is then used as an adsorbent in either a carbon-in-pulp system or counter-current flow columns to concentrate and recover the precious metals. Existing techniques for recovering precious metals from carbon prior to the precipitation or electrowinning of the metal involve either the use of dilute aqueous hydroxide solutions at elevated temperature and pressure or, as in a more recent method, the use of a strong cyanide soak followed by a water strip solution at an elevated temperature. Despite past Bureau efforts in the area of precious metal recovery, the ex- traction of gold from pregnant leach solutions remains the most serious drawback in carbon-in- pulp and heap leach processing of low-grade ores containing precious metal values. A second disadvantage in the current practice is the interference in adsorption and desorption that occurs due to the presence of other heavy metal cations in cyanide leach solutions. Specific objectives of current Salt Lake City Research Center precious metals research are to develop less energy intensive and more economic methods for recovering gold, silver, and by- product metals from low-grade resources. To meet these objectives, we are investigating noncyanide leaching reagents, ion exchange resins, solvent extractants, and novel electrowinnlng procedures.

A mutispectral scanner (MSS) obtains remotely sensed data of the earth's surface in vector form, one vector element for each spectral sensing band of the MSS. Data generated by either airborne or orbiting MSS systems are organized in a lattice of scan lines and elements within scan lines. Each element, called a pixel, is represented by an observational vector and corresponds to a relatively small specific area on the ground. The total observations for a sensed scene frequently are in the millions and are composed of a number of populations, each representing a different land form category. Based on samples from the populations, the mean vectors, or spectral signatures, and the covariance matrices for the categories may be estimated. From these, an among category covariance matrix and a combined within category covariance matrix can be found. The total among category variance is the trace of the among category covariance matrix. Canonical analysis finds a linear transformation matrix such that the first transform variable accounts for the maximum possible part of the total among category variance. Similarly, the second transform variable, orthogonal to the first, accounts for the maximum possible part of the remainder of the total variance, and so on. Such transformation often results in over 95 percent of the total variance accounted for in the first three canonical variables, even though the initial number of spectral bands exceeded twenty. Transformation of bulk data into three canonical variates allows color map products to be developed by assigning each variable to a different basic color. Such color products are believed to be more useful for photo-interpretation than color products resulting from any combinations of three of the initial spectral bands.

This paper focuses on formulating a practical procedure for forming long-range production and development schedules in underground mining. A computer program developed to be run on a microcomputer is presented and discussed in detail, and a practical case study is analyzed to demonstrate the suitability of the procedures discussed in the paper. The intent of the computer scheduling model is to have quick access to vital information when changes in development and production are under consideration by management.

The subject of rapid excavation tunneling is one that is extremely important to the people in the Metropolitan area of Chicago. My personal observation is that it is also extremely important to the urban communities around the U.S., to many local and state governments, and to the public officials who are deeply concerned about state affairs and taxes. The Metropolitan Chicago area is in fact, (as are 40 other major urban areas in the U.S.) confronted at the present time with a very serious combined sewer overflow, drainage and pollution problem which accounts for an estimated 40% of the pollutional load on its waterway system. In response to this the District has to date spent some seven millions of dollars in an attempt to find the most economical solution available for the elimination of this problem. This study included extensive investigations of the geological strata, the quantity and quality of storm runoff to be dealt with, and the various methods of storage and treatment available. It has considered solving the overflow problem by a concept involving a series of tunnels, rock tunnels, shafts and storage areas which will collect, retain and subsequently treat that portion of the combined sewer overflow which can be handled in the most cost-effective and economical way, consistent with following the federal and state standards - with which we at the present time agree in principle.

The paper describes the features of the problems encountered and the countermeasures taken for two different tunneling projects. Where, slurry shields were used to excavate, in soft heterogeneaous water-bearing grounds, tunnels passing at very low cover beneath existing foundations of H.T. electric pylons, underground structures and major utilities. In order to avoid any ground failure and/or damage to the existing structures, one option was ground treatement by grouting or freezing technics. However, it was judged that, based on previous experiences, excavation with slurry shield could be carried on securely using an appropriate slurry enriched with polymers and applying a well determined pressure at ground face. A three dimensionnal limiting equilibrium analysis model was used to determine proper confinement pressures. And, the appropriate slurry compositions were stabilished based on laboratory test results. The tunnels were excavated successfully, no ground failure was experienced, and the maximum settlement recorded (on pylons) didn't exceed 3 mm.

I know the theme of the Congress is "The 21st Century - Mining for Mankind" but I hope you will understand why my address touches upon some near-term issues as well. With the world oil market the way it is at present, "the long term" seems to be next week and no one is even sure what will happen tomorrow! So I am going to take a little licence with the theme of the Congress and talk about some fundamental issues that have much to do with the current uncertainties. The ways in which these issues are resolved and the role governments elect to play in the next few years will determine both the shape of the petroleum industry in the 1990s and beyond and the success with which we can confront a growing and inevitable future dependence on OPEC oil resources. But just in case you are not familiar with what has been happening in the petroleum industry recently and why the future seems more uncertain than ever, let me show you the gyrations in oil prices over the past 13 years, and remember that it is only another 13 years or so years to the 21st Century.

The similarities and differences in copper, nickel and lead smelting processes are discussed based on the sulfur-oxygen chemical potential diagrams and the free energy minimization assessments using a thermodynamic software. The prominent features of copper smelting are ascribable to the fact that copper has a strong affinity for sulfur but weak for oxygen and the liquid phase immiscibility between Cu and Cu2S. During the oxidation of sulfides, nickel metal is not stable except at temperatures higher than 1500°C, well miscible with its sulfide, and is oxidized more easily than copper. Metallic lead looks as stable as copper during the oxidation of the concentrate but Pb and PbS. are much more miscible with each other and the vaporization loss is considerable. In the reductive smelting of oxides, the effects of oxygen potential and temperature on the copper contents in slag are not significant due to the monovalent character of copper and the reduction of copper content in slag is not easy in practice. The effect of the slag compositions on the oxidic metal contents of slag is much more significant for lead than either copper or nickel. Due to the immiscible nature between Pb and Fe, high grade lead bullion is easily obtained and lead is more tolerant to impurities.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

To monitor the quantity and quality of air in underground mines to assure safe working conditions. Approach Several mine air monitoring systems, consisting of sensing stations in the return airways and control stations on the surface, have been Installed and tested. How It Works Sensor stations are located at strategic places in the underground mine. At each station, the sensors measure air velocity, air temperature, methane concentration, and carbon monoxide concentration. In one system, differential air pressure between intake air and return air, is also measured. Output voltages of the sensors are converted to digital signals at the sensor stat ion; these signals are multiplexed so that data from all sensors can be trans-phone wire to a central station. There the data are displayed and alarms are triggered when the sensed values exceed (or in the case of air velocity, fall below) a preset value. In addition to receiving data automatically, the central station can poll individual sensors at any time.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service providers alike form the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and practical, implementable solutions.The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver focused mine haul road research outcomes, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through end-user driven research solutions for enhanced operational performance.Citation:Handel, D, Miedecke, J, Thompson, R, Tomicek, E and Tulloch, D, 2016. The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines to enable mine operators to maximize longwall dust reductions, while optimizing the use of ventilating air and shearer water consumption. A recent investigation by Foster-Miller Incorporated, under a Bureau of Mines contract, quantified the effect of increased face airflow and shearer water supply on face dust concentrations. A 70 pct reduction in respirable dust levels was achieved at the shearer operator's position during tail-to-head cutting by an incremental increase in average face air velocity from 83.8 m/min (275 fpm) to 123.4 m/min (405 fpm), while holding shearer water consumption constant. A 60 pct reduction was achieved through an increase in shearer water pressure and flow from 9.1 kg/cm2 (130 psi) at 0.19 m3/min (50 gpm) to 19.7 kg/cm2 (280 psi) at 0.28 m3/min (75 gpm), holding airflow constant. The combined effects of increasing both parameters produced an 85 pct reduction. Optimal usage of ventilating air and shearer water consumption can be achieved by defining a "point of diminishing returns" above which further increases no longer reduce dust concentrations, proportionately .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines was established in1910 to reduce .the high accident rate in the nation's coalmines. For 85 years, it conducted a wide variety of tasks related to mining before it was abolished in 1995. The BOM had many technology transfer successes in its lifetime, including more than a dozen "R&D100" awards. This essay identifies and discusses five "transfer factors" that can explain the success (or failure) of many Bureau of Mines projects. These five factors are termed "pressure, pitfalls, path, price, and profit."

El método ofrece la ventaja de aumentar la capacidad de las zonas existentes para el almacenamiento de los relaves, sin requerir de la ampliación de las presas perimetrales.
