Selecting a minicomputer is not unlike selecting a costly piece of mining equipment such as a truck, shovel, crusher, or conveyor belt system. A marked difference might lie in the frequency at which such selection takes place; another difference might be mine management's familiarity with mining equipment vis a vis a minicomputer. These basic differences might prompt a mining company to seek the aid of a consultant when selecting a minicomputer system. Advantages and Disadvantages The fundamental advantage of employing an independent consultant is that it provides management with a source of knowledge and breadth of experience not readily available within the organization. If the consultant has a minerals background, such knowledge and experience are further enhanced by actual experience in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. If the consultant has worked within a mining company, such hands-on experience is supplemented with a meaningful understanding of the client's business; this facilitates communication between the consultant and members of the client organization. The consultant has been, so to speak, "in the client's shoes." There are several other advantages. Since computer systems cut across organizational boundaries, the independent consultant may be able to move within the organization more easily than an inside staff person to collect necessary information. Also, detachment from any manufacturer should provide the client with an objectivity and a set of recommendations as near optimal as feasible. The principal disadvantages lie in the area of continuity and accountability. Once the consultant's report has been submitted and his recommendations implemented, a discontinuity might occur. Also, if implementation does not provide the desired results, the consultant might not be available to correct the situation or account for actions taken. Proper selection of consultant services, relative to kind and duration, and the consultant's method of operation, will often prevent many of these aftereffects. Services Offered The professional consultant can help a client: •Define and summarize information systems technology* needs; • Evaluate alternatives such as in-house capability and capacity, time-sharing, or service bureaus; • Prepare a formal request for proposal (RFP) to be submitted to vendors; •Evaluate vendor proposals; •Evaluate the economics of lease vs. purchase; and •Assist in the conversion and installation. Thus, consulting services may range from evaluating an existing system and upgrading to a larger piece of equipment, to selecting a new first-for-the-organization computer. First, Define and Summarize Needs Regardless of circumstances, the most valuable document required before equipment selection is the information system plan (I/S plan). It helps insure that the company's information needs are met in a cost-effective manner. An I/S plan is usually a comporient of the mining company's overall business goals. Since an I/S plan is a formal vehicle for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to satisfy information requirements needed to achieve goals and objectives, most initial systems services are likely to center around creating such a document or updating an existing document. The trend toward company-wide I/S planning is increasing in the mining industry; however, smaller scale efforts focused at the information systems needs to support an individual

This paper presents the design and construction of a deep basement in a steeply sloping site in glacial till in Glasgow city centre. Existing foundations, adjacent structures and services, in tandem with asymmetric loading, presented particular challenges in the planning, execution and design of the project. The construction methods and temporary works, analysis by the Finite Element method and monitoring carried out are all described.

The GPM Gold Project is located in Armenia, and consists of an open cut mine at Zod, near the Azerbaijan border, and a CIL processing plant at Ararat near the Turkish border. Mining at Zod commenced in 1976, and focused on near surface oxide ores, which overlay deeper refractory sulphides. Historical mining has now almost depleted the oxide ores, and the sulphide content of ore delivered to the processing plant at Ararat is increasing. Gold and silver recoveries through the Ararat plant were declining steadily.GeoProMining, the owners of the project, have expanded the Ararat facility to deal with the increasing sulphide content in the ore. In 2014, GeoProMining refurbished an existing concentrator on site to recover a sulphide concentrate from the ore, and have constructed an Albion ProcessTM plant to oxidize the refractory concentrate. Glencore Technology (GT) provided the Albion ProcessTM plant as a technology package.In July 2014, the progress of the GPM Gold Project Albion ProcessTM Plant was reported (Hourn, Voigt and Turner, 2014). At the time of writing, the construction of the plant was nearly complete. This paper presents an update of project progress, covering commissioning and ramp up of the GPM Gold Project.The commissioning phase occurred over June to August 2014, which included an M3,000 IsaMillTM fine grinding plant, a 6 tph limestone milling plant, a 60 tpd vacuum pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant, a 10 m residue thickener and a 12 tph Albion ProcessTM oxidative leach plant. Since commissioning was completed, ramp up occurred over the following three months with downstream gold recoveries from cyanide leaching reaching over 98%.CITATION:Voigt, P, Hourn, M, Mallah, D and Turner, D, 2015. The gamma-alpha transformation in iron and iron-rich alloys is of such practical and theoretical importance that many papers have been published upon the subject relating to critical temperatures, transformation rates and accompanying property changes. Although crystallo-graphic studies are of less immediate practical usefulness, the opportunities which these offer to furnish data on the basic atomic movements which characterize the transformation are not to be neglected1. The early work on the crystallography of this transformation has been reviewed in the fourth paper of this series2; since then several important papers have appeared. Our present knowledge may be briefly summarized as follows. Kurdjumow and Sachs, working with a 1.4 per cent carbon steel3, established the orientation relationships subsisting between the face-centered gamma and the metastable tetragonal lattices in freshly quenched martensite, and between the face-centered gamma and the body-centered alpha lattices in tempered martensite. The orientation relationship observed in the latter case may be stated in terms of planes and directions observed to lie parallel in the two lattices: {111} ?//{110}a [110] ?// [111]a (This notation is used throughout as the most descriptive means of expressing the fact that any (111) plane of the gamma phase may be parallel to any (110) plane of the alpha phase, and that a [110] direction in a particular (111)? plane is parallel to a [Ill] direction in the corresponding (110)a plane.) From these relationships the atomic movements that transform the gamma lattice into the alpha may be inferred. It is shown that for systems having a miscibility gap the spinodal composition (c,) in the vicinity of the critical temperature (Tc) is related to the equilibrium composition (c,) by where cc is the critical composition. The purpose of the paper is to discuss socially sustainable development in the mining industry and the communities surrounding the mines. The discussions are based on results from a prestudy and literature review on mining and sustainable development conducted during 2013–2014 at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. ‘A social licence to mine’ is important for the mining industry, but the social dimension is a relatively underdeveloped dimension when it comes to sustainable development in general and the mining industry in particular, one reason probably being the lack of effective methods for capturing social impacts. The mining industry and the surrounding communities face many challenges that provide both possibilities and obstacles to socially sustainable development; eg aspects such as gender, work conditions and cultural aspects. For example, a strong mining workplace culture and community identity can create strong cohesion but also lead to excluding certain groups, rejecting new ideas and reinforcing obsolete values. Other challenges include recruitment, as well as health and safety in relation to an increased use of fly-in-fly-out, contractors and automation of mining. Some challenges relate to the effects of fluctuations in the mining market. There is a lack of research that links attitudes, policies and activities within companies to their impact on the wider community, and vice versa. The design/optimization of the pump and cyclones to maximize grinding circuit efficiency first requires a concise understanding of, and clearly defined specifications for, desired grinding circuit performance. Subsequently, the pump and cyclone performances that provide the desired grinding circuit performance can be defined. Once the performance requirements of each process unit are determined, selection of physical equipment parameters that will deliver those performances can be carried out. The Functional Performance Equation shows that there are two distinct efficiencies in closed circuit ball milling. One of these, ?Circuit Classification System Efficiency? (CSE), is the fraction of ?coarse? material inside the ball mill upon which grinding energy is deliberately expended, versus the remaining fraction of ?fines? or finished size material inside the mill, upon which grinding energy is wasted (on over-grinding). The role of the pump and cyclones is to maximize CSE, which is the desired grinding circuit performance. The obtainable, target CSE for any given circuit can be estimated, for example by referring to a plant data base of CSE?s. Design/optimization guidelines then allow us to specify the pump and cyclone performances that will achieve the target CSE. This paper outlines the step-by-step, systematic method of pump and cyclone selection which maximizes CSE. Numerous examples of its successful application are provided.

Conventional disposal of waste rock results in the construction of benches with fine and coarse layers dipping at the angle of repose. This interbedded structure influences flow pathways within the waste rock. A numerical modeling program was conducted to study a four-layer system consisting of alternating fine and coarse waste rock. The system was inclined from the vertical to forty-five degrees with heights varying from one to twenty meters. The results show the effects of gravity as preferential flow developed under unsaturated flow conditions.

Adequate load transfer is considered essential for optimum ground support and is increasingly important in weak roof and/or high stress environments. If adequate load transfer is achieved not only can this have a positive impact on the resulting roof behavior, but it may also allow the use of lower and hence more economic densities of roof support. A wide variety of post-groutable cable bolts are currently in use in the Australian coal mining industry, each of varying capacity, design, and grouting methodology. Though all of the cables are supplied with the appropriate steel specification, strength, and modulus data, the Australian coal mining industry does not have access to a comprehensive and comparative database on the corresponding load transfer performance, which is a critical problem. On the basis of the above, this paper describes the methodology and results of a laboratory pull testing program that aims to assess the impact of cable bolt design on load transfer, and specifically, the impact on the capacity and stiffness of the anchorage. As part of the testing program, 19 cables were tested including (1) plain-strand cables installed in holes drilled with 28 to 55 mm diameter drill bits and (2) bulbed and nutcaged cables installed in holes drilled with 42 to 64 mm diameter drill bits. Other parameters assessed included the significance of smooth and profiled wire, wire packing, and expanded geometry bulbs. The main results of the testing indicate that in comparison to plain-strand cables, if the cable is bulbed or nutcaged, the capacity of the anchor can increase by up to 400%, and the peak stiffness by between one and two orders of magnitude. The results also indicate that increasing hole diameter may have a positive impact on load transfer in the case of bulbed or nutcaged cables and a negative impact on plain-strand cables. No conclusive results were obtained with regard to the impact of grout strength on load transfer.

A model was developed to facilitate secondary tailgate support selection based on analysis of over 100 case studies, compiled from two different surveys of operating longwall coal mines in the United States. The ALPS (Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability) program was used to determine adequacy of pillar design for the successful longwall case histories. A relationship was developed between the secondary support density necessary to maintain a stable tailgate entry during mining and the CMRR (Coal Mine Roof Rating). This relationship defines the lower bound of secondary support density currently used in longwall mines. The model used only successful tailgate case history data, with adequate ALPS SF according to the CMRR for each case. This model facilitates mine design by predicting secondary support density required for a tailgate entry depending on the ALPS SF and CMRR, which can result in significant economic benefits.

From time to time lead, which is normally considered to be a soft ductile metal, fails by cracking. The cracks which form appear to be of two distinct types-(a) those which follow a zig-zag course around the boundaries of crystals and (b) those which follow a more direct path, frequently two systems of cracks appearing at right angles.The former appear definitely to be associated primarily with the properties of the crystal boundaries, whilst the latter appear rather to be determined by the system of stresses applied. In both cases the lead appears to be a brittle rather than a ductile metal, for the failure occurs without the large amount of deformation usually associated with the tensile breaking of lead. The latter is, however, a function of time and when lead is deformed by long applications of stress, the metal appears to- be less ductile than when the stress is applied suddenly. Thus, if a given test piece of commercial lead is broken by a stress of 1100 lb. per sq. in. in several hours, it may extend 40 to 50%before failing, whereas when broken by a stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. acting for 12 months or more it willshow an extension of only 15 to 25 %. With lower stresses still, failure would take much longer and undoubtedly lower extensions would be obtained.As the stress is lowered it is found that the marked local contraction characteristic of ductile metals becomes less noticeable, and failure, instead of being by extension of *Lecture delivered to the First 'Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, 21st August, 1935.

Ground deformations are of major concern during tunneling, especially in downtown environments, since they have a significant impact on the costs and practicality of tunneling. This case history describes soil and groundwater conditions and ground behavior during the construction of twin transit tunnels for the Downtown Seattle Transit Project (DSTP). The tunnels were excavated through complex glacial soils ranging from hard glaciomarine drift to flowing sand. The tunneling process was greatly facilitated by the prediction of soil layer positions to an accuracy of ±0.6 m (2 ft). Tunneling was complicated by the presence of over 500 temporary tiebacks and by disturbed ground overlying an operating railroad tunnel. A variety of ground improvement techniques were used to successfully minimize settlements, which ranged from 1 cm (0.4 in.) in glaciomarine drift to 6 cm (2.4 in.) in flowing sands. Ground improvement techniques included compaction grouting, chemical grouting, jet grouting, and eductor well systems.

The rapid depletion of zinc-lead ore reserves and the rising costs of exploration have been major factors in the decline of mining activities and explorations for additional reserves in the Tri-State mining district. There is a need to develop new or adopt known, improved exploration techniques that will appreciably lower the costs of exploration. Demonstration of the practicability of using improved techniques to indicate, rapidly and cheaply, mineralized areas or geologic structures where more intensive explorations are justified could stimulate the search for and discovery of additional ore reserves. Various operators in the Tri-State district have used geophysical surveys to some extent since 1928 to guide exploratory drilling. Some geophysical investigations have also been made in the district by the State Geological Surveys of Kansas (11)3/ and Missouri (8, 13) and by Federal agencies (16), with the objective of directing exploratory drilling to areas where geologic conditions favored ore deposition. Many factual data obtained have not been published. The investigations generally have not been broad enough to permit conclusive evaluation of the usefulness of the geophysical techniques in all parts of the district.

An extensive Precambrian iron-formation lies about 2,000 ft. beneath post-Precambrian rocks in the Fort a Ia Corne Forest Reserve, south of Choiceland, Saskatchewan. The geology, deduced from limited drill results and from some geophysical observations, indicates that the deposit is a characteristic magnetite iron-formation, not uncommon in the exposed Precambrian of Saskatchewan, but also shows certain interesting features of faulting and pre-Paleozoic weathering which have given rise to a pre-served detrital deposit of hematite. The body is of ore grade and of sizeable proportions. T HIS paper is presented in order to set forth the interesting geological features of a Precambrian iron deposit located beneath the cover rocks of the Great Plains region and to comment upon the methods of discovery and interpretation of the nature of the body. "The number of hybrid vehicles is increasing and this is causeing an increase in waste nickelmetal hydride batteries. The cathode activating agent of batteries is made of nickel hydroxide and the anode activating agent is an alloy of nickel and rare earth elements. Conventional rotary kiln methods cannot recover the rare earth elements, and hydrometallurgical treatment of crushed product consumes large volumes of agent. The physical separation of the anode alloy from the cathode hydroxide would make it possible to reuse the alloy. The authors have reported separation of anode and cathode components in the large size fractions using a newly developed dry magnetic separation method. Wet magnetic separation has been applied to the powder fraction and about 90% anode purity was achieved. This paper reviews experimental results from previous publications and proposes an integrated treatment process for crushed nickel-metal hydride batteries.IntroductionEnvironmentally-conscious clean energy vehicles have attracted much attention in developed countries and particularly hybrid vehicles are increasingly mass-produced as low emission vehicles. Hybrid vehicles have both a gasoline engine and an electric motor to save on gasoline usage and a nickel-metal hydride battery is used to store electric energy. The battery contains Nihydroxide and Co as the cathode activating agent and an alloy of Ni and mischmetal (mM), a rare-earth element mixture consisting of La, Ce, and Nd, as the anode hydrogen adsorption component. In conventional recycling, the Ni and Fe are recovered with a rotary kiln-electric melting process and the Co and mM go to the slag component [1] and hydrometallurgical treatment of crushed product consumes large volumes of agent. Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation have proposed a low energy and low cost recycling treatment process combining the physical and chemical treatments and the authors are investigating the physical treatment process."

The extraction of aluminum oxide_ from its ore is the initial step in the commerical production of metallic aluminum. This is most commonly done by the Bayer Process in which a caustic solution is used to dissolve hydrated alumina from the insoluable materials with which it is associate in bauxite. At the two-thousand ton per day Sherwin Alumina Plant of Reynolds Metals Company, the extraction residue from Caribbean ores is removed from the main pro¬cess stream as the underflow of a continuous clarifier-thickener operation. This sludge, prior to its ultimate r4jection from the process, is washed in a nine-step continuous countercurrent decantation system to recover physically-entrained mother liquor. Control of alumina production costs requires the optimum recovery of solubles from this residue which is generated at the same rate as the finished product. The equipment, operating techniques, controls and process variables which affect the efficiency of this soda recovery from Bayer Process red mud will be discussed.

When a major mineral find has been announced the general perception is that a battle between Aborigines and the mining company involved will inevitably occur.It is a fact that many miners in the past have not had a good relationship with Aborigines because of their indifferent attitudes towards them. They saw no common future and went their particular way. However, attitudes have changed significantly since Noonkanbah and both miners and Aborigines are seeking common ground in order to achieve mutual benefits from the establishment of a mine on or near Aboriginal land. There are many obstacles that both miners and Aborigines need to overcome inordertofindthiscommongroundtoachieveawin/win situation. The obstacles can be found in entrenched ideas and practices which need overhauling, not the least of which emanate from government policy and requirements.Without going into specifics, the Noonkanbah incident during the 1970's where Aborigines and their supporters confronted miners who were ordered by the Western Australian governmentto drill on Aboriginal land, polarized Aborigines and miners. Since this incident, many Aborigines, particularly those in the cities, have had the attitude that mining and Aboriginal culture are in direct conflict. Aboriginal opinion is generally shaped in the larger cities through mass media coverage of the opinions of urban Aborigines and their supporters. Through no fault of their own, these Aborigines were removedfromthe land of their ancestors and have notlived atraditional Aboriginal life-style for a number of generations and most have little knowledge of, nor have had involvement in, traditional Aboriginal lore and culture. For the most part these people live in awestern life-style and few still know their language. They generally have high profiles, often giving viewpoints that are wrongly considered "Aboriginal" and supposedly representing all Aborigines. This group is very different with their thought processes and values from those Aborigines who live on their own traditional lands with a traditional life-style, and practise their age old ceremonies. Their tribal values are based in their relationship with the land, expressed through complex religious ceremonial rites of song, dance and legend. Today this group is very much diminished in numbers but nevertheless in the region of the Gulf of Carpentaria there is a high proportion ofpeople who practise their lore, speak their own languages and pass on traditions to their children. It is well documented in the history of Australia that Aborigines have been decimated in numbers and whole tribes have been wiped out. Certainly in this region the experience has been no different.

Hard-won experience in the operation of smelting plants has pointed the way to the most efficient design and economical operation of a baghouse system for recovery of metallurgical fumes. This paper treats of the principles governing bag filtration and the factors most directly affecting bag life. Methods for temperature conditioning of smoke previous to filtering are described and the evolution of bag shaking mechanisms is brought up to date. THE history of the bag filter process, as applied to the recovery of metallurgical fumes, goes back to 1876, when the Lone Elms Works of Joplin, Missouri, erected a two-section baghouse for filtering fumes from Scotch Hearth lead smelting furnaces. By modern standards this installation was crude, but the basic operating principles remain essentially the same today. Great progress, however, has been made in the mechanization of the process by the use of devices for mechanically and automatically cleaning bags of adhering fumes, in the use of instruments for recording and controlling the variables affecting baghouse operation, and in the conditioning of the smoke previous to filtering. The principles governing bag filtration of fumes were investigated in 1929 by A. J. Seitz of American Smelting and Refining Co., and he arrived at the following conclusions: 1. Pressure on Bags at Constant Volume: The rate at which the pressure builds up in a bag with constant volume is directly proportional to the time, with the same kind of smoke and dust burden (fig. 1). 2. Pressure on Bags for Change in Volume: With equivalent smoke and dust burden, the bag pressure increases with the square of the increase in volume. The rapid increase in pressure is due to (1) increase in volume, (2) increase in amount of dust on the bag, and (3) more intense packing of the dust at higher velocity (fig. 2). 3. Effect of Intensive Filtering on Pressure: Since the pressure builds up directly as the square of the volume, with the same smoke and dust burden, it is necessary to shake the bags in that increased ratio, and vigorously, to keep the pores of the bag open and pressure down. This increases the wear on the bags and the dust losses. 4. Effect of Shaking on Dust Losses: The losses are in direct proportion to the frequency of shaking because the loss takes place immediately after shaking, before the bag seals itself. Tests show that with hand shaking the last 20 pct of the removable dust requires seven times more shaking per unit weight of dust than the first 80 pct. 5. Effect of Fineness of Dust on Losses: The fineness of the dust particle increases the loss in two ways: (1) When the bag is clean a greater percentage of it will pass through before the bag seals itself; (2) fine material penetrates farther into the bag pores, building up pressure faster and necessitating more shaking, thereby increasing the loss. The physical principle of operation of the bag filter is simply the separation of solids from a gaseous carrier through a porous medium, and is analogous to the filtration of solids from liquid carriers.
