(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) MOST of. the recent discussion of the mineral land law published in the Transactions is in the abstract-an exception being Mr. Goodale's paper, The Apex Law in the Drumlummon Controversy,1 which illustrates in concrete instances many of the practical disadvantages of what Dr. Raymond has. called "The Law of the Apex." The present paper, it is hoped, may serve a similar purpose, emphasizing the necessity for a change in our mining laws, and bringing home to mining engineers some of the defects and dangers of our present code. There are many storm centers of "apex litigation" in the Rocky Mountains; and not the least of them is the Wardner camp, where such litigation has been almost continuous since 1892, and the end is not yet. In their decisions, the courts have accepted the claims of the litigants that the " Wardner vein" is a broad zone varying from 250 to 500 ft. in width at the surface. This is the simplest theory which could have been advanced, and probably decreased, rather than augmented, the number of contests; in fact, every one of the claim owners seemed to feel that the greatest advantage would accrue to him if this theory were adhered to. The dominant structural feature of the Wardner vein is a persistent fault, striking N. 40° W., clipping about 40° to the southwest and called the "Wardner foot wall." Fig. 1 is a composite of two adjacent cross-sections of the vein and is a fair representation of the relative size and shape of the orebodies and their relation to the "Wardner foot wall." The country rock is a comparatively thin-bedded sericitic quartzite which has an average strike of N. 80° W. and clips at high angles to the north and south.

Surface mining has been used primarily where deposits of minerals were exposed or close to the surface. Surface mining can, therefore, be considered the oldest branch of mining. As the most accessible deposits became uneconomical because of the lack of suitable high capacity conveying systems, deep mining took its place. Only in the twentieth century was this trend reversed as high capacity production and conveying systems were developed. This rapid development was triggered by the steadily increasing demand for raw materials and fossil fuels, as well as by the ever increasing ratio between overburden and deposits.

Coalbrook Collieries has produced approximately 2 million tons of coal by retreat longwalling since April 1976. Strata control. support. stone intrusions. coal conveyance, and the inflow of goaf and water between the face supports have been the major operational problems experienced to date. The progressive percentage availability of the total system (moves between panels excluded) for the first three panels mined was 40 per cent. Satisfactory solutions have been evolved for these problems. and the availability in the present panel (fourth panel) has increased to approximately 60 per cent. It is envisaged that longwalling will become the most economical method of ensuring optimum heat values, greater recovery. and reduced geographic expansion. as well as safer roof conditions. at Coal brook.

A model describing size reduction and mineral liberation during grinding has been extended to include multiple classes of composite particles. The majority of the model parameters have been directly determined using computerized image processing equipment to analyze the products from batch grinding tests. A coarse-grained sphalerite ore from Tennessee, representing a nearly ideal binary mixture of sphalerite and dolomite, has been used to experimentally validate the model for the case of dry, batch grinding. In all cases, excellent agreement has been observed between the model predictions and the experimental results.

Field reconnaissance and laboratory tests on clay from South Windsor, Hartford County, Conn., indicate that the clay is suitable for lightweight aggregate raw material. Exploration of the deposit supports the conclusion that the reserves of clay are sufficient for economical mining operations to produce lightweight aggregate. Preliminary tests indicated that the clay has a short bloating range. Initial expansion occurred at 2,000° F, and at 2,100° F the clay was slightly overfired and sticky. Rotary kiln tests verified the preliminary data, and these tests showed that the clay would make a good lightweight aggregate if the processing temperature and the kiln feed sizes were closely controlled. Lightweight concrete made from the processed aggregate had properties comparable to those of concrete made from a commercial clay aggregate.

In 1988, the U.S. Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center identified three coal cleaning options for achieving flexible environmental control strategies aimed at reducing energy-related SO2 emissions. These are selective agglomeration, advanced froth flotation, and advanced cycloning. Each technology relies on maximum liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter through feed coal comminution to fine and ultrafine sizes. Research projects designed to expeditiously develop each of these technologies to the point of commercial viability were initiated. This paper will present the status of these projects and the application potential of each technology to coal beneficiation.

"The study presents a control strategy implemented at the Nkomati nickel mine flotation plant for process stabilization and improvement. The control strategy involves flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate stabilization and the flotation cell mass pull control. The flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate is operated at a fixed set point. The initial control strategy involved varying the flow rate to maintain the concentrate tank level thereby reducing pump cavitation. The flotation cells mass pull control comprises air rate manipulation into the cells with the exception of the recleaners. The air rate into cells is automated to adjust based on the concentrate tank level variation. The control strategy was implemented on the roughers, cleaners and the recleaner circuit. The recleaner cells air flow rate is adjusted based on the MgO content in the concentrate. The stabilization of the flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate and the mass pull by aerate automation will increase the scope of optimization for further process improvement. The immediate benefit of the control strategy implementation was plant stability. Disturbance to the flotation cells downstream was minimized due to stable flow rate, and the air addition manipulation ensured that the concentrate tank levels are maintained, minimizing pump cavitation. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a challenging process because it is influenced by a large number of factors, including the flotation feed characteristics. One of the ore types mined at Nkomati nickel mine is the main mineralized zone (MMZ). The MMZ ore is hosted in the Uikomst complex, a Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr- mineralized, layered basic to ultra-basic intrusion which hosts commercially viable magmatic base-metal sulphides (De Waal et al., 2001). The MMZ ore is a heterogeneous sulphide mineral resource with a varying sulphide mode of occurrence and texture. The beneficiation of the complex sulphide ore is challenging due to the presence of impurities in the ore. The impurities report to the flotation final concentrate and penalties are levied if the impurities are beyond the contractual limits."

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. This paper is focused on describing the pilot and demonstration plants for pyrolysis process of mixed plastic wastes developed at Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). These plants were constructed at KIER (300 ton/yr) and also Korea R & D Company (3,000 ton/yr) in Kimjae city, in Korea. The raw material used was mixed plastic wastes that were generated from household and industry, etc. The liquid products obtained by pyrolysis at around 400°C were used as an alternative fuel oil. These processes were controlled by automatic control system with continuous operation in a control room. Main process units consist of automatic feeding, melting, thermal cracking systems and vacuum distillation. Their characteristics were automatic pyrolysis operation under vacuum atmospheric pressure, continuous control in feeding of raw material and discharging of solid residue, the recirculation of cracked reactant with a high temperature into the melting reactor and continuous pyrolysis of reactant in circulation thermal cracking system such as constant stirred tank reactor (CSTR), plug flow reactor and light/heavy oil separator, in order to maximize the efficiency of light oil products like kerosene and diesel. In addition, the process performance of pilot plant was described.

"SUMMARYSamples of Aunor gold precipitates which varied widely in gold content were fluxed to produce a bisilicate slag with various oxidizers and combinations of oxidizers. On the basis of some preliminary tests a flux composition was chosen which appeared to show the most promise.The different components of this flux were then incorporated into a matrix for a 23 factorial design experiment to determine what were the most important variables and what changes should be made to the flux composition to optimize the resultant total bullion fineness.The results of the 23 factorial design experiment showed that the flux composition as calculated was very close to an optimum as only very minor changes were required to give bullion in excess of 995 fine.INTRODUCTIONEarly in 1969 the results from the Aunor Gold Mines refinery showed that wide variations existed both in precipitate grade and in total bullion fineness. An analysis of this data showed that as the precipitate grade increased, the gold bullion fineness also increased (see appendix 1). Therefore, to improve the refinery results test work was initiated to: 1) improve the precipitate grade and 2) to determine, with the help of statistics, a flux composition which would be able to handle wide variations in precipitate grade and give a total bullion fineness in excess of 950 fine."

Portland cement can be made from relatively abundant industrial minerals and rocks, and this may explain why cement producers placed little emphasis on geology during the early days of the industry. After World War II, however, the industry began to recognize the need for geological exploration, and some of the larger companies began to build a permanent geological staff. This development had its roots in the following factors: Rapid expansion of the industry; closing of many cement plants due to inadequate raw materials; necessity for upgrading the quality of portland cement; and the increasingly large capital investment required to build new cement plants, which in turn, required a higher degree of accuracy in reserve calculations. Whereas the geologist's function during the active expansion of capacity was primarily in exploration, one of his major functions today is the development of existing reserves.

1.1 General The examination and evaluation of a mineral deposit to determine whether or not it can be profitably exploited entails many factors unrelated to the physical nature and intrinsic worth of that deposit. Nevertheless, geology and geologically related factors have great bearing on the economic potential of the deposit. This is only natural because the deposit owes its existence to these factors. This is even more so in underground mines where the whole system is a geologically enclosed one. Geology plays a major role in at least four phases of a mineral venture. Firstly, it acts as an indicator of the existence of parti¬cular minerals. For example, it is inconceivable that a sedimentary coal deposit would exist in a granitic batholith or stock, or that a sandstone would host primary copper or nickel sulphides. Further, the positional relationship of different rock types may be significant in locating deposits such as replacement zinc and copper sulphides in limestones which have been intruded by igneous rocks. Thus, geology is important in the exploration phase of a mineral deposit. Secondly, once potentially valuable minerals have been discovered, knowledge of geology plays a significant role in determining the dis¬tribution, grade and extent of the mineralization. ThE formation of the (100) [001) texture in 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe strip was first reported by Assmus ef a1.l in 1957. Since then much experimental work has been carried out with a view to establishing the mechanism involved. The papers cited above state that the (100) [001] texture was developed in strip rolled from material melted and cast in vacuum. (The impurity content of the ingot is reported as 0.005 pct.) The present note records that similar results can be obtained in material processed by powder metallurgy. A processing schedule is described.which enables the texture to be formed in strip up to 0.010 in. thick, but there seems no reason why this should not be achieved in thicker strip, provided that large grains are developed after sintering. The materials were prepared from Carbonyl Iron Powder Grade MCP (particle size 5 to 30 p) of the International Nickel Co. (Mond) Ltd. The powder contains about 0.15 pct 0, 0.01 pct C, 0.004 pct N, <0.002 pct S, $0.005 pct Mg and Si, and 0.4 pct Ni— that is, it is substantially free from metallic impurities other than nickel, which is thought to be unimportant in the present work. The silicon powder was 99.9 pct purity, or material of transistor quality (ground in pestle and mortar). The mixed powders (3-1/4 pct Si to 96-3/4 pct Fe) are heated in hydrogen at 350" and 650°C to deoxidize the iron before sintering loose at temperatures between 1350" and 1460°C (depending upon the ultimate thickness of strip required) for up to 24 hr. The object of the high-temperature sinter is to develop a large grain size at this stage. Alternatively, the loose sintering can be done at a lower temperature followed by rolling or pressing and then annealing at temperatures between 1350" and 1460°C. Both methods produce large grains, which remain large throughout the process. The compact is then hot-rolled to approximately 1/8 in. with high-temperature interstage anneals if necessary. This step is taken to avoid intercrystalline cracking which would occur if the material of such large grain size were cold-worked. The bar is then annealed at 1050°C and reduced to its final thickness by approximately 50-pct reductions and 1050°C interstage anneals. Throughout the process the dew point of the hydrogen furnace atmosphere is maintained at about -40°C. Samples were annealed in hydrogen at various temperatures and times. Secondary recrystalliza-tion to (100) [001] was developed on the thinner material (i.e., up to 0.002 in.) by annealing in hydrogen at 1050" to 1200°C with a dew point of - 40°C or in vacuum (10-5 Torr) at 1050°C. With the thicker materials (i.e., up to 0.010 in.) the best results were obtained by annealing in hydrogen at 1200°C with a dew point of - 55°C. Complete secondary recrystal-lization to (100) [001] textures was obtained. Above these temperatures secondary recrystallization to (110) [001] tended to develop. The final annealing of samples was normally carried out with the samples placed between recrystal-lized alumina plates, but some experiments were performed with the samples suspended so that their surfaces were not in contact with anything except hydrogen, and these were equally successful in developing secondary crystals. An approximate determination of the proportion of material (before secondary recrystallization took place) having crystals with the (100) or (110) planes in or near the rolling plane showed that 11 pct of the sample had (100) and 16 pct (110). The method used for the determination is described below. A sample was annealed at a temperature just below the secondary recrystallization temperature and etched to reveal the (100) planes. The approximate area covered by crystals having (100) or (110) in or very near the surface was measured on the screen of a Vickers projection microscope. This was repeated for twenty positions chosen at random and a mean of the results calculated. The main hindrance to developing the secondary crystals in the thicker materials was the difficulty of obtaining a large enough initial primary grain size before secondary recrystallization. This was overcome by increasing the particle size of the silicon powder used. During the course of the work, it had been observed that the larger the grain size after sintering the more likely it was that the material would be successful in developing secondary crystals at a later stage. An experiment was therefore carried out to determine whether the material with the larger grain was more successful in developing secondary crystals due to the large grain produced at the sintering state per se or whether it was due to the greater reduction of silica brought about when the sintering temperature was raised in order to increase the grain size. A comparison was made between two compacts, one of which was made with silicon powder of 60 to 100 mesh, the other with silicon powder which was finer than 200 mesh. F?r this experiment, use was made of a phenomenon previously observed that the larger the particle size of the silicon powder employed in making a compact, the larger is the grain size of the compact. "This paper describes the bench testing, pilot plant studies of alternative flowsheets, to determine the feasibility of gold recovery, by carbon in pulp extraction, in the Schumacher Mill gold flotation tailings. The economics were calculated based on pilot plant recoveries and actual industry operating costs.The economics of the carbon in pulp treatment of the gold flotation tailings were not justifiable. The economics of desliming the gold flotation tailings followed by carbon in pulp treatment were marginal, but favourable. INTRODUCTIONPamour Porcupine Mines, Limited is a gold, silver and copper producer located in Timmins, Ontario. In 1983 the head grade of Pamour's gold ores averaged nine one hundredths of a troy ounce of gold per short ton.Pamour operates two area mills to concentrate the gold ores. Free milling gold ores are processed at the Pamour One Mine mill, whereas the refractory carbonaceous gold ores, and complex gold, silver, and copper sulphide ores, are processed through the Schumacher Mine mill.The complex Schumacher mill feed ores do not all react favourably to flotation methods, consequently this study was commissioned to investigate the feasibility of the carbon in pulp cyanidation of the Schumacher mill gold flotation tailings. These tailings contain ten to fifteen percent of the gold in the mill feed. During the study period, the average grade of the Schumacher mill flotation tailings was nine one thousandths of a troy ounce of gold per ton, or one quarter of a gram of gold per metric tonne."

The mechanisms leading to the impact of airborne dust particles onto bluff flow obstacles have been extensively reported [1] and widely applied in dust measuring instruments (e.g., impactors) and in dust collecting devices (e.g., filters and scrubbers). If the human head is regarded as a bluff body, particles from dusty flowing air can impact onto the face by virtue of those mechanisms. While a great deal has been researched and written on the nuisance caused to human beings by the entry of dust particles into the body by inhalation through the nose and mouth, there appears to be nothing reported in the scientific literature about the irritation which can be caused by the impact of dust onto the face. And yet there is sufficient evidence to suggest that in certain working environments and under certain conditions, the problem is indeed a real (albeit subjective) one. In the coal mining industry, underground workers are exposed to conditions, involving dust-creating production and handling processes on the one hand and high ventilation rates demanded by the gassy nature of the environment on the other, in which the problem can exist. At the coal face, for example, the movement of powered roof supports ("chocks") can release bursts of dust formed by the crushing action of the supports, which in turn is entrained into the moving air and impacts onto the faces of miners working just downstream. The dust in question contains a large proportion of coarse particles which, while still fine enough to remain airborne for appreciable distances downstream of the point of release, are coarse enough to produce sen¬sation on impact with the skin. Adverse subjective response of workers to such irritation could damage morale and productivity. We have performed laboratory and field experiments to investigate the psychophysical and physiological responses of human subjects to dust impacting onto the face and into the eyes. Since this appears to be the first systematic investigation into these questions, the aim has been to construct a useful scientific framework from which to allow characterisation of the problem of such "fly-dust", and, ultimately, the development of methods for monitoring and controlling it. The main results of our research are given here; the theoretical and experimental details will be presented at greater length elsewhere.

This paper discusses modern practices in the extrusion of steel. Particular emphasis is given to a description of the Ugine Sejournet method of extrusion, involving the use of glass as a hot work lubricant. Other methods are also mentioned. A brief history of extrusion is presented; present practices in the quality extrusion of tubing and solids are described; and the future potentials of the) process as a tonnage producer are briefly discussed. The advantages of extrusion and the reasons for the use of a glass lubricant, as well as the various methods of using glass, are given. The process, as described, is being used in the manufacture of large commercial quantities of stainless steel tubing and sections. This extrusion process is an essential and unique means of forming such atomic-age materials as titanium, zirconium, molybdenum and other super alloys all of which are materials required in the creation of nuclear installations.
