This project involved the removal of the top of an old water supply reservoir tank for the City of Lead, SD by explosives. The general contract called for the removal of the concrete top without damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. The option of a rock hammer was eliminated, due to the possibility of an unpredictable collapse damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. Different blasting options were discussed between the primary contractor and the blasting contractor, along with the pros and cons of each. The primary contractor settled on the option of drilling the structure for blasting versus using shaped charges

"Soil conditioning is one of the main factors in successful application of EPB machines in tunneling projects, which involves changing the characteristics of the ground in order to make it suitable for the tunneling process. Selection of the type of conditioner mainly depends on soil type, properties of the tunnel boring machine, and most importantly geological condition. Proper EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in ground above water table is challenging. This was encountered in Northgate Link Extension Tunneling Project in Seattle, WA. In order to improve the tunneling operation, a novel algae-based encapsulated oil was used as a conditioner and as a result the operation of the TBM was improved significantly. This paper reviews the traditional soil conditioning measures that were adopted in University Link and Northgate Link projects in Seattle, WA and compares the results with results when using the encapsulated oil additive. INTRODUCTION Soil conditioning agents are used in EPB tunneling to transform the excavated soil into a workable paste with the desired hydrological and mechanical properties. Reducing wear, power consumption, friction, adhesion, and improving the face stability and material flow are some of the benefits of using soil conditioners in EPB tunneling. Soil conditioning is performed by injecting foam, polymer, water, and bentonite to the tunnel face, excavation chamber and screw conveyor. Selection of conditioning agent mainly depends on soil type, geological condition (groundwater and soil permeability) and TBM features (injection points, open or closed cutterhead, type of foam generator, etc). The most widely used soil conditioners are foam and polymer and in some cases due to existing conditions, clay dispersion or anti-wear additives are also used (Milligan 2000, Langmaack 2000). Foam. Foam is created by dispersing air in a surfactant solution. A different combination of surfactant type and foam parameters should be used for different soil types. Laboratory tests on virgin soil should be performed to identify the best surfactant and foam parameters for the specific soil type (Langmaack 2000). The foam parameters can be described as follows:"

The intent of this address is to look forward into the 21st Century and present certain thoughts as to how underground coal mining might be conducted. The views in this talk are based principally on the author's experience with mining practices in the United States. It may be difficult to accept, but the 21st Century is a mere 12 years away. What new techniques will be available? To develop an understanding of the way in which technology has been and could be changing, a two- stage analysis is made of mining technology for U.S. Coal. The first phase covers the period 1975 to the present, while the second includes 1960 to 1975. This historical perspective includes a view of underground production by mining methods, considerations of labour productivity, and a review of accident and fatality rates. Several topics are important features of this historical analysis. Among the most significant are: (1) the introduction of Ion-wall mining technology into U.S. underground coal mines, (2) the use of computers to assist in mine planning and design activities, (3) major efforts to improve health and safety performance, with emphasis on underground dust control, and (4) improvements in mining equipment with an eye towards increased reliability and up-time performance. Based on that historical perspective, projections are made in three increments. The first being immediately at the turn of the century, the second being a dozen or so years beyond that, and the third being at the quarter point of the 21st Century.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. THE lead-telluride phase diagram as compiled by ansen' has one intermetallic compound, PbTe, with solid-solubility limits extending from 22 to 45 wt pct Te (31.4 to 57.1 at. pct). Pelzel2 redetermined the solubility limits on the lead-rich side of the compound by measuring the relative areas of the two phases in samples annealed in the liquid + compound region, and obtained data that agreed with that of Hansen. Recent studies of the semiconducting properties of PbTe3 however, have indicated that addition of either lead or tellurium to PbTe does not produce samples having carrier concentrations greater than about 10 19 cm-3. Assuming that each impurity atom results in one ionized charge carrier, this carrier concentration corresponds to a solubility range of less than 0.04 at. pct. Fritts and Karrar4 have also observed two phases in samples containing from 0.15 to 3.0 pct excess Pb. To resolve the discrepancy between these data, the solid solubility limits of the compound PbTe were reinvestigated, using several other techniques. Ten 25-g samples with compositions of 1/2, 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt pct excess Pb and Te and two 100-g samples of 15 and 65 wt pct Te were prepared, sealed in evacuated quartz capsules, and melted at 950oC. The 1 pct excess Pb and Te and the 15 and 65 wt pct Te alloys were homogenized for 96 hr at 450°C; the remaining specimens were annealed 50°C below the solidus temperature reported in Hansen. The specimens were polished and etched with dilute HNO,. All the samples were two phase, the second phase appearing at grain boundaries or as spheroidized inclusions in the grains. In the case of the tellurium rich specimens, the second phase could be identified as a eutectic. Debye-Scherrer powder diffraction patterns of the i, 1, 3, 5, and 10 pct excess samples were obtained using CuKa filtered radiation. The films were indexed as the B1 or NaCl structure. The calculated lattice parameter of PbTe was the same for all the specimens, with an average of a0 = 6.460 ± 0.0005A. Lines due to excess lead or tellurium were very faint but could be clearly seen in all the films. The relative areas of the two phases in the 15 and 65 wt pct Te samples were corrected for the differences in density of Pb, Te, and PbTe, and taken as proportional to the relative volumes of the two phases. The corrected relative volumes agreed with a phase diagram having negligible solubility of both lead and tellurium in lead tellurium. The density of the two specimens was obtained to give a third independent determination of the phase limits. The specimens were broken into small pieces to eliminate any internal porosity, and adherent air bubbles were removed by vigorous shaking under water for several hours. The density of lead (11.34 g per cm3) and of tellurium (6.25 g per cm3) was taken from the International Critical Tables and that of stoichiometric PbTe (8.25 g per cm3) calculated from the lattice parameter. For the 15 wt pct Te samples, the density assuming no solubility was calculated to be 9.89 g per cm3; the observed density was 9.86 g per cm8. For the 65 wt pct Te alloy, the density calculated for the case of no solubility was 7.24 g per cm3; the measured density wag 7.22 g per cm3. ONE of the most striking phenomena connected with the mines on the Comstock lode is the extreme heat encountered in the lower levels. This heat is not due to the burning of candles, heat of the men, and decomposition of timbers, all intensified by bad ventilation, as was the case nearer the surface. It proceeds from the rock, which maintains constantly a temperature very much higher than the average of the atmosphere in Nevada. The heat of these mines is a matter of more than usual interest, for they are the only hot ones now worked in the United States, and both in the present temperature encountered and in the increase which is to be expected as greater depths are reached, they appear to surpass any foreign mines of which we have a record. Hot mines are known also in other countries, as in the tin and copper lodes of Wales, where one of the veins worked by the United Mines is known as the hot lode. It has springs which discharge water at a temperature of 116' Fahrenheit, the depth being 220 fathoms, or 1320 feet. The heat of the air in these workings is. given at 100' to 113' Fahrenheit. The air is bad, and the heat in the drifts seems to be traceable to defective ventilation rather than to the real necessities of the case. Air is supplied through a small pipe, and is drawn from a place where the temperature is 95' Fahrenheit. Under such circumstances it is not surprising to read that in this hot mine the air is hotter than the rock, a state of things which I hare never observed in the Comstock. Other mines have been reported to the British Coal Committee as having temperatures of 106" Fahrenheit and thereabouts, but the only positive comparisons that are available at this writing are the following, all from Cornish mines : Mine. There are application in coal mines where it would be advantageous from a safety stand point to fire unconfined shots. However, the firing of mud caps (adobes) or other unconfined explosive charges in underground coal mines is not permitted because of the explosion hazards associated with methane gas and coal dust. Present safety regulations in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations prohibit such Practices. Recently, MSHA proposed revised coal mine regulations for the approval and use of sheathed explosives for Public comment.

Tangdan copper oxide deposit, the largest independent copper oxide deposit in China so far, is located in the northeast of Yunnan province, southwest of China. The ore from this deposit is characterized by: low grade, high oxidation ratio, and fine-grained disseminated, resulting in poor flotation recovery. The analysis of plant flotation data reveals that the loss of copper minerals into tailings is mainly with coarse size fraction due to insufficient liberation and fine size fractions, especially minus 10 microns fraction, which proved to be very difficult-to-float with conventional flotation. In order to improve the performances of plant flotation of this ore, laboratory flotation tests were conducted with the pure malachite, which was the principle copper oxide mineral in Tangdan copper ore deposit. The results obtained suggested that a finer grinding (up to -325 mesh or even -400 mesh) be needed to decrease the loss with coarse size fraction, and vacuum flotation is a promising way for the recovery of the fine malachite effectively.

The most common experimental approach of studying one variable at a time while holding all others constant is extremely inefficient. Use of statistical methods enables engineers and scientists to obtain meaningful information with the fewest experiments, reducing cost and wasted effort. In particular, the Taguchi method can be more efficient than traditional full factorial experiment designs, as it can study more variables with fewer nuts, and it is more robust against process "noise." Taguchi designs are also simple to formulate and the results can be analyzed by simple PC spreadsheets. The role and benefits of using the Taguchi method in experiments to develop and optimize processes is discussed.

Previous publications on the application of EIETSIM include the modelling of an electrolytic zinc plant and a copper flash smelter. In the present case METSIM has been used to model the desilverising of lead by the reagent zinc, whereby a silver-zinc intermetallic compound is formed, and floats out of the lead. This compound has a variable composition, depending upon the ratio of dissolved zinc/silver in the lead bath. Its solubility in lead decreases with falling temperature. A number of variations and modifications of the Davey Desilverising Procedure are modelled, and applied to a wide range of silver contents in lead bullions at several plants. METSIM uses both feed- back and feed-forward controls to simulate plant conditions, and a logic control to distinguish between different phases in the Zn-Ag system. Use is made of extensive (previously unpublished) fundamental data on the ternary Pb-Ag-Zn system, and of plant data, to establish certain operating parameters.

ASDIE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has four awards it may make annually, as follows: the Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize, the J. E. Johnson, Jr., Award, the James Douglas Medal, and the William Lawrence Saunders Medal. Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes: first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the subcommittee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A subcommittee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October meeting, and the award shall be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist." This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Division. This paper summarizes a three phase face ventilation study which was conducted from September 1989 through March 1990 to determine face area methane liberation patterns on two extended longwall sections. The coal seam being mined was considered gassy and the mine liberated an average of 14.4 million cubic feet per day (cfd) or 0.41 million cubic meters per day (cmd) of methane through the mine fans. The mine also used an extensive underground degasification program to recover up to 13.4 million cfd (0.38 million cmd) of methane. Data was collected while the longwall sections were mining from the beginning, middle and end of panel extraction to determine the relationship between the methane liberation and extent of longwall retreat. As expected, methane concentrations did increase from the headgate (intake) to the tailgate (return) side of the longwall face and peak concentrations were detected above the shearer as it passed a methanometer location during mining. There were significant differences in the methane liberations due to the location of the active face within the longwall panel. Results from this study could be used to determine a minimum design face air quantity for an extended longwall section operating under similar conditions.

Many problems which are initially described as deficiencies in blasting or support are directly related to drilling. The assessment of support performance and blasting efficiency must begin with a detailed examination of drilling practices.

Introduction Joints often have profound effects on elastic properties and strength of rock masses and therefore on rock slope stability. In surface mine slopes, joints are usually too numerous to be taken into account individually, so an equivalent properties approach is necessary. Previous work that treats a jointed rock mass as an equivalent composite material of joints and intact rock between resulted in excellent agreement between estimated and true rock mass elastic moduli in case of fully persistent joints (e.g., Pariseau, 1999) Rock mass failure mechanisms on joints and through intact rock were retained obviating the need for an equivalent rock mass strength. Impersistent joints, which are not continuous on a joint plane, can be accommodated (Pariseau, 2003). However, slope stability analysis of a large, deep copper mine indicated a need for computational efficiency even in two-dimensional analysis of vertical sections through pit walls (Puri, 2006). The analyses by the popular finite element method used small elements of bench size near the pit slopes and much larger elements away from the pit walls. The reasons for the graded meshes were numerical quality (small elements) and computational economy (large elements). Small elements contained only a few joints, while the larger elements contained hundreds of joints and led to impractical computation run times (days!). A new modeling procedure that recognizes sufficiently large elements as representative volume elements (REV’s) overcomes this obstacle. A companion improvement recognizes the concept of a representative area element (RAE) in association with joint impersistence and the probability that joint material occupies a considered site. Both are steps towards greater model realism and a practical slope stability analysis procedure. Consider the open pit mine photo shown in Figure 1(a), a companion plan view in Figure 1(b), and the problem of slope stability where high slope angles favor economics but low slope angles favor safety. These competing factors in surface mining generally result in some sections of the mine that have unstable slopes that require monitoring and perhaps mitigating action to improve stability. Although stability of a given section may not be easy to quantify with a single number, useful design guidance can be obtained from a finite element analysis of a proposed mining sequence leading to future pit slopes and profiles. The presence of water from rain and snow melt indicates a need for a coupled analysis that links water pressure, effective stress and total stress (Schmelter, 2001).

It is generally accepted that South African coal mines have gone through the mechanization of most of its underground mines, and while there certainly were a lot of productivity improvements, the lack of visibility on these machines operating underground still leave vast areas for improvement. The average actual cutting time still remains very low, in the 30 per cent area, which leaves significant improvement possible. Currently all analysis is carried out using hand-written reports. Unfortunately this is subjective and often inaccurate because of human interpretation. In addition in order to avoid costly component failure, a monitoring system is required to warn of eminent failures and condition monitoring. The challenge faced was to supply and install a system that was ‘Open’ and could be retrofitted to existing machines in operation because of the current standard of communication links to the underground sections. In addition it was intended to use, existing ‘off the shelf’ software and hardware and adapting this for the harsh underground mining conditions wherever possible in order to reduce costs. As development occurred, as with all technology, doors opened to other opportunities such as, remote access data logging and Internet based reporting. We focused on the Voest Alpine Bergtechnik (VA) range of continuous miners, as need arose to achieve the desired cost improvements because of the strategy of service contracts the subsidiary company, Voest Alpine Mining & Tunnelling (VAMT) offer the mining industry in South Africa. This paper describes a data logging system that has been installed on various continuous miners that provides data in real time, on line, and that could be expanded to any electrically supplied underground mobile or stationary mining machine.

A number of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing. These publications demonstrate both the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. "Methane hydrate is of interest as an alternative energy resource in Japan and the R&D program has been ongoing for ten years (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). Rare-earth element-rich deep-sea mud (REE Mud) is also of interest as an alternative resource in Japan and an exploration program has been launched in 2013.For methane recovery from the hydrate, a depressurization method pumps up water in a production well and has been successfully applied in field production tests (MH21: http://www.mh21japan.gr.jp/english/). However, micro-bubbles, which appear in the hydrate dissociation and water recovery processes may present an environmental issue. It may stick on clay and silt particles that accompany the recovered water, and may disturb settling of the particles in the water separation tank. For exploitation of REE Mud, an air-lift system has been proposed in the feasibility study (Abe et al., 2012). The same micro-bubble issue is expected during the air, water, and mud particle separation processes. In this research, the authors conducted a preliminary tank experiment for clarifying the effect of micro-bubbles on settling behavior of fine kaolinite particles. The behavior was continuously recorded by a still camera and the images were analyzed by the gray scale intensity. From the results the authors found a suspension effect for the settling of fine particles as the result of micro-bubbles. The effect should be studied in detail for preventing some serious environmental impacts during deep-sea mining."
