"Concrete understanding of fluid dynamics properties inside basic oxygen furnace (LD converter) and hot-metal surface deformation due to impinging oxygen jet is important for optimization of reaction kinetics and maximization of productivity and refractory lining life. In this study various k-å turbulence models and volume of fluid (VOF) method have been used to model fluid flow and interaction of impinging oxygen jet with hot metal for an industrial scale top blown LD converter.RNG, standard and realizable k-å turbulence models are used to study velocity magnitude, stream function, turbulence intensity profiles. Turbulence kinetic energy, turbulence eddy dissipation, velocity magnitude and probable mixing time have been calculated in three locations inside the converter.The average rate of oxygen jet penetration, location of vortex formation, centre line and superficial velocity of impinging oxygen jet, probability of emulsifícation are studied by VOF method.These simulation studies provide better understanding of phenomena inside LD converterIntroductionComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling in the field of basic oxygen steelmaking can improve substantially the understanding of existing processes where investigation of liquid steel flow measurement is hardly possible due to the rough ambient circumstances. In order to reasonably predict gas stirring operations and emulsifícation, mass, momentum, energy transfer and dynamic interaction among ions, atoms, molecules in the bath, detailed information on flow patterns, fluid velocities, and turbulent properties is essential. Since the advent of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for treatment of uranium-bearing ores in the 1950?s to current carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processing of gold values, metallurgies and operators alike have wrestled with the problem of interstage screening. Early gold CIP plants such as at Homestake utilized externally mounted vibrating screens in conjunction with air lifts to effect carbon-pulp disengagement. Other operations world-wide have likewise adopted this technique with varying degrees of success. Subsequent development of in-tank launder screens both in South Africa and the United States have been of the air cleaned variety (EPAC)

I had the opportunity recently to visit a magazine site of a major explosives company. It was fun to see the storage areas again and it was really interesting to see one of the old magazines that probably dated back before my time. Now that’s an old one. As son Tom says, “When Dad was young the Dead Sea was just sick.” While the magazine has been upgraded with a modern lock to match today’s standards it still has the old tumbler lock that is opened with the large bronze key. Those old tumbler locks were just about standard on magazines years ago. Those bronze keys were heavy and would make a good display item today or maybe a substitute for a blackjack. I don’t think the old locks would stop the modern criminal but then in those days we were all less sophisticated. And maybe I shouldn’t say this but honesty was a bit more prevalent then. Maybe ‘cause old fashioned police brutality still prevailed.

A sulfidic flotation tailings ore, containing 1.14 gpt Au and 242.53 gpt Ag, was treated by low temperature chlorination roasting followed by cyanide or chloride leaching. Eighty per cent of Ag was recovered by cyanide leach when the ore was roasted at 350°C with 50 kg/ton calcium chloride. About seventy per cent of Au was made cyanide amenable by chlorination roasting at 400°C. A better Ag recovery, ninety per cent or over, was achieved by chloride (NaCl+HCl) leach. However, Au recovery was very poor by chloride leach. Ferric chloride, calcium chloride, and cupric chloride were compared as chlorinating agents for their effect on Au and Ag recovery. The study found that low temperature chlorination roasting is very effective for recovering Ag associated with stibnite and stannite. The best chlorinating agent for the test ore was found to be calcium chloride. Parallel roasting-leaching tests indicated that chlorination roasting was far superior over oxidation roasting for both gold and silver recovery.

"No true conception of the Park City mining district can be obtained without first giving consideration to the part it has played as a consistent producer of mineral wealth. Its position in this regard is almost unique in the annals of a lead silver camp. For over fifty years it has been a continuous producer of lead and silver and for twenty years it has added to the world's supply of zinc. Few camps with its productive history are so little known to the mining fraternity for the reason that its life has never been punctuated by periods of ""boom"" which serve to attract general attention, neither has it been the field of operation for promoters who temporarily focus attention upon their scene of action. Its history is one of legitimate mining operations. These were at first carried on by a number of smaller companies. A period of consolidation followed and at the present time the entire production of the camp is in the hands of two major companies and one smaller company. These are flanked by a number of prospecting properties, which are at this time actively engaged in the search for ores and later events will doubtless put some of them in the producing class.A technical discussion of the ore occurrence and mining operations in the camp will be the subject of a paper to be read before this meeting of the Institute. The mission of this article is to supply a ""Baedeker"" where Baedeker is lacking.The town of Park City is a typical, up-to-date, western mining camp which owes its existence as a town of 4,500 inhabitants solely to the mining industry. The camp is located 7,000 feet above sea level, thirty-two miles east of Salt Lake City. It is situated on the Victory Highway seven miles from its junction with the Lincoln Highway and has the benefit of excellent automobile communication with the metropolis of the state. Both the Denver and Rio Grande and the Union Pacific Railroads give daily train service to the camp and effectively solve the transportation problems of the mining companies."

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has recently established an Industrial Transformation Research Hub in the area of iron ore, focused on iron ore characterisation, beneficiation, materials handling and end-use functionality. The research hubs are part of a new initiative aimed at building stronger relationships between industry and universities, while addressing issues of national significance. The ARC Research Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore will focus its attention on developing innovative approaches for creating enhanced value across the full value chain through the characterisation of different ore types, beneficiation and materials handling and transport. This hub brings together five industrial organisations and a research team formed from well-established research groups based at the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources. These groups have a record of working closely with industry to create opportunities. Examples include new beneficiation technologies such as the Reflux Classifier for achieving gravity separation, the expertise of TUNRA Bulk Solids in materials handling and the Iron Making Centre at Newcastle, which is a capability maintained by BHP Billiton following the closure of its Technology Centre in 2009. The purpose of this paper is to provide an outline of the research hub and its objectives, some background on the research groups that now form the hub and an insight into the strategy adopted for developing and implementing new technologies. Two Canadian mining companies, Noranda Mines, Ltd., and Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Ltd., have agreed to buy $500,000 worth of shares each in Anglo-American Exploration Ltd., controllers of thousands of acres of possible oil-rich land in southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Samuel Clarence Nickle, Sr., reported as possible president of the newly formed exploration company, said that $20 million in assets have been accumulated by the firm, mainly in the Williston basin in parts of the Dakotas and Montana, aid extending into Southern Manitoba and most of Saskatchewan. The M. A. Hanna Co. reported a record profit for the seventh consecutive year with total 1951 profit reaching $14,081. The company handled a record 16.8 million tons of iron ore in 1951, compared with 14.9 million tons in 1950. The company is also preparing to open four iron ore mines in the Lake Superior district which are expected to produce more than 5 million tons annually by 1954. The company built two new iron ore concentrating plants at Mesabi range mines in 1951,a with a third plant going into, operations soon.

Norton Co., a manufacturer of abrasive products and diamond drilling and coring bits for oil and gas exploration, is building a $19.1 million addition, scheduled for completion in late 1980, to the Huntsville, AL. The plant makes alumina-zirconia abrasive grains used in grinding wheels and coated abrasives. ALUMINUM Martin Marietta Aluminum Inc. announced plans to expand production capacity of its 112,000-ton-per-year primary aluminum smelter at Goldendale, WA to 177,000 tons per year. The $125 million expansion was scheduled to come onstream in 1981. The Aluminum Company of America announced plans to restart a fourth potline during October at its 185,000-ton-per-year Point Comfort, TX primary aluminum smelter.

Concentrating, nodulizing, and smelting studies were conducted at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines to determine whether (1) western iron ores of the type found in the Carter Greek deposit near Dillon, Mont., could be utilized; (2) concentrates of acceptable grade with good iron recovery could be attained by wet-magnetic beneficiation; (3) nodulized concentrates could be smelted with reductants readily available in Montana; (4) iron concentrates could be smelted without prior agglomeration; and (5) high-purity iron could be produced directly from high-grade concentrates, Three small samples and two tonnage samples from the Carter Creek deposit were uniform in chemical composition, and their iron content averaged about 31 percent. They were found to be banded gneisses, and magnetite was the principal iron-bearing mineral.

ALTHOUGH cylindrical grinding mills have long been used, there is wide divergence of opinion as to what constitute best operating conditions. Questions such as mill diameter, diameter-length ratio, revolutions per minute, type and size of grinding media, volume of charge, circulating load, pulp level, pulp consistency, liner design, and size of feed, have all been given serious consideration by competent scientific investigators as well as by operators. While many laboratory and plant tests have been made that would seem to justify certain definite conclusions, there is a dearth of definite data giving actual results obtained when a grinding mill working between fixed limits is operated at its maximum capacity under varying conditions as to ball load, circulating load, speed, etc. In tests conducted recently at the Hollinger, extending over a period of thirteen months, to determine the best operating conditions for a ball-mill 6 ft. 6 in. diameter inside the liners, some very interesting facts have been ascertained. This paper is presented in the desire to make public the results of these tests and not with the idea that the last word has been spoken in regard to grinding. We feel, however, that these facts justify certain definite conclusions and hope that, by the fullest and frankest criticism and discussion, the essentials necessary for the correct design and operation of grinding mills will become better known.

Section 1417 of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments enacted by the O.S. Congress prohibits the use of lead containing solders for potable water systems in new construction or when making repairs. The legislature defines "lead-free" solder as containing less than 0.2% lead. In the development of a new solder it was recognized in addition to the lead free requirement, the alloy should perform as well as the popular 50/50 tin lead solder, both in application and properties. Another objective was to have only nontoxic elements. This led to the development of a 4.0% copper, 0.5% silver and 95.5% tin solder. Review of the merits of other alloy systems and the development of the physical properties along with test data are presented for the lead free tin. rich alloy.

Solids suspension is important in the design and operation of mechanical flotation cells, and is a necessary precondition to particle collection. Most of the fundamental hydrodynamic research that incorporates some aspect of solids suspension was done by Arbiter, Harris, and co-workers, or Schubert and co-workers. However, a need for research into solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells exists, since very little has been done since the late 1980s; a time that also coincides with the advent of round mechanical flotation cells and the subsequent dramatic increases in maximum flotation cell sizes. In this work, concentration profiles and critical impeller speeds, Njs, were measured in a 0.124 m3, round cell fitted with a 0.150 m, Bateman impeller mechanism. Two solids size fractions (75 - 106 and 150 - 250 ¦m) were tested, in ungassed and gassed conditions (JG = 0, 1 cm/s) and at various impeller speeds (300 - 900 rpm). The effectiveness of solids suspension was quantified in three ways in terms of extent of off-bottom solids suspension, suspension height (extent of solids distribution), and variation within the solids distribution, which together present a complete quantitative picture of solids suspension and distribution within the cell. Consistent trends were found when these effectiveness criteria were considered against relative impeller speed, in terms of percentage of critical impeller speed, N/Njs. Off-bottom solids suspension is complete at or above 100 per cent of Njs, with significant sedimentation occurring as the impeller speed drops below 60 per cent of Njs. Suspension heights consistently reached a level equivalent to 90 per cent of the tank diameter at the critical impeller speed, and dropped off significantly as N/Njs dropped below 60 per cent. The variation in the solids concentrations within the sampled profiles showed consistent trends in two-phase but not under three-phase conditions. The paper concludes that the critical impeller speed, Njs, commonly used in the design and operation of standard stirred tanks, is a very useful solids suspension benchmark for describing all aspects of solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells and should be correlated to system conditions.

Dimension stone is a term applied to stone sold in blocks or slabs of specified shapes and usually of specified sizes, contrasted with crushed, broken and pulverized stone covered in another chapter. Dimension stone includes cut stone, rough building stone, ashlar,* rubble, monumental stone, paving blocks, curbing, flagging, and many types of ornaments and novelties carved from stone. Riprap-large, irregular blocks used for shore protection-is classed with crushed and broken stone. Composition, Varieties, and Properties Dimension stones are of many kinds. The principal varieties are granites, trap rock (diabase, basalt, and gabbro), sandstone, limestone, and marble. Slate is covered in a separate chapter. Granite is a visibly granular crystalline rock consisting essentially of feldspar, quartz, and mica or hornblende. The basaltic rocks are darker in color than the granites. They contain little or no quartz and consist largely of plagioclase feldspar, augite, pyroxene, and hornblende. They are classed commercially as black granites. Limestone consists essentially of calcium carbonate. Dolomites and magnesian limestones used as dimension stone are classed with the high-calcium limestones. Marble is a crystalline form of limestone, but in the trade, any carbonate rock which will take a polish is called a marble. Many limestones which are fossiliferous but which will take a polish are sold as a decorative stone for lobbies of hotels and office buildings. Sandstone consists essentially of silica in the form of sand grains cemented into a coherent mass. Although rock occurrences are numerous and widespread, the exacting requirements of use condemn all but a small fraction of them for commercial use as dimension stone. No deposit that has closely spaced joints or planes of weakness can be used because sound blocks of moderate to large size are demanded. Uniform texture and grain size, constant and attractive colors or color pattern, and freedom from impurities that may cause stains or deterioration usually are demanded. Hardness is a variable property. Granites and diabases are as hard as or harder than steel, while limestones and marbles may be scratched with a knife. The hardness of sandstone depends upon the degree of cohesion of the grains. Workability depends to a considerable extent on hardness, but the degree of hardness has little influence on use except where stones are subjected to abrasion as on steps or floors. "Texture" as applied to stone relates to the arrangement, uniformity, and size of the constituent grains. Stones are of many colors and thus can satisfy a variety of tastes. For monumental stone, a marked contrast between polished and tooled surfaces is preferred in order that inscriptions may be read easily. Strength requirements usually may be disregarded because any sound structural stone suitable in other respects is almost invariably many times as strong as would be required for any ordinary use. The pressure on the base course of the Washington Monument, Washington, D. C., is less than 700 psi, and highgrade granites, limestones, sandstones, and marbles will sustain a crushing load of 10,000 to 25,000 psi. Inquiries and instructional work on the determination of the number concentration of dust in atmospheres known or suspected to contain pneumoconiosis (silicosis and asbestosis) - producing particulate matter indicate a need for a description of the impinger method used by the Bureau of Mines. The impinger method consists of the collection of dust in a liquid medium and the counting under the microscope of the particles in a known portion of this liquid. The dust-collecting device is called an impinger. The dust in the air drawn through this collector at a known rate impinges at high velocity upon a smooth surface under a bubbling column of liquid. The dust is either picked up from this surface by the liquid or removed from the air as it passes through the liquid.

The last few years have shown an increasing interest in the subject of beneficiating iron-ores in all iron-producing countries. In the United States, this movement has been slower than in certain parts of Europe, for the obvious reason that the abundance and relative cheapness of the Lake Superior irou-ores has hindered the development of enterprises for the preparation of low-grade ores. Gradually, however, conditions have changed. The world's consumption of iron is increasing enormously. Being in 1900 about 40,000,000 tons, in 1910 it was already 60,000,000; and there is no reason to doubt that for the near future the increase in iron-cousumption mill continue at the same rapid rate, especially with the development of China, certain parts of Africa, and other regions which have hardly been touched as yet by modern industrialism. It is, therefore, not surprising that apprehension is felt that the known available iron-ore resources of the world are gradually being depleted. Signs of this feeling are the recent iuvestigation, under the direction of the U. S. Geological Survey, of the iron-ore resources of the United States, and the estimate presented to the last International Geological Congress, at Stockholm, Sweden, of the iron-ore resources of the world. These investigations have emphasized the fact that the known high-grade ore-deposits are limited in extent, and will, at a not distant future, be exhausted, compelling the iron industry to depend for raw material on the enormous deposits of low-gratle ores which are distributed over almost all the world. The discovery of new deposits of high-grade ore, in countries not yet thoroughly explored, will not materially change this prospect. Of course, the part which such new deposits will play in the future cannot be forecast. The difficulty and cost of transportation will probably exclude many of them from use at the present centers of the iron industry.

At the present time five localities in the Argentine Republic are known to bear direct evidences of the presence of petroleum. The segregation of these localities is more or less arbitrary inasmuch as minor indications may be found to extend from one locality to the other at no regular distance apart, especially in the northern and western part of the republic. These localities are listed as follows: North Argentine-Bolivian region, Salta-Jujuy district, provinces of Mendoza and Neuquen, Comodoro Rivadavia, and the Gallegos-Punta Arenas region. Economic conditions attract us to the possibilities of developing these and other regions of countries in the southern hemisphere. Development work will, naturally, be undertaken first in such localities as present direct manifestations of the presence of petroleum; "hidden fields" may exist, but, unless discovered by accident, their development will be left to the last. The problems to be solved in the development of the petroleum resources of the Argentine republic are mainly of stratigraphy, structure, and transportation. We are not here concerned with the unfavorable climate of the countries to the north in the tropics where, for us of the "far north," life hangs by a thread ready to be severed by a mosquito, gnat, or tropical germ. North Argentine-Bolivian Region The North Argentine-Bolivian region has already been described by the author.' Geographically and geologically this is admittedly one field extending from Argentine into Bolivia. It is not necessary to repeat here the various conditions pertaining to this field, though the summary may be quoted as follows: Extending from northern Argentine northward into central Bolivia is a belt of petroleum seepages. On account of the remoteness of the district it has, heretofore, been little considered by oil operators. The regional geology is comparatively well understood but the local features have not been carefully detailed.
